Redknapp: £19m LFC target is a 'powerhouse' who 'bullies' defenders. Sign in Jan?

With Liverpool's strikers struggling to fill the Luis Suarez-sized hole at Anfield, the Reds are once again being linked with a January move for unplayable' Swansea City star Wilfried Bony, and Jamie Redknapp is the latest ex-Red to hail the powerful Ivorian striker.

According to reports this week, Liverpool will 'consider' a move for Bony if the club 'fails to lure [Saido] Berahino in the winter transfer window".

Earlier this week, ex-Swansea star Ian Walsh claimed that Liverpool made a 'big mistake' signing Mario Balotelli ahead of £19m-rated Bony, and in his Tuesday column for the Daily Mail, Rednapp outlined the striker's main qualities. He enthused:

"Bony is a powerhouse. Monk has kept the passing philosophy and Bony fits in with that, but provides strength too. He bullies defenders, loves a shot [and] it's no surprise to see him score in his last three Premier League outings".

Despite his obvious (and consistent) quality, some LFC fans still retain irrational antipathy/indifference towards Bony, and baulk at the possibility of LFC signing him.

Well, I've argued many times that LFC should sign Bony. He'd be a great signing, for the following reasons:

* After proving his quality in Holland, Bony has done the same in England, and his creative stats prove this:

- Swansea Totals: 40 goals/assists in 59 apps.
- Goal/Assist every 1.4 games.
- League only: 28 goals/assists in 43 apps.
- Goal/assist every 1.5 games.

A striker's primary role is to score/create goals. On that basis, Bony is one of the best strikers in English football, whether fans choose to accept it or not.

* Like Suarez, Bony is a man of steel, and is seemingly impervious to injury. Whenever I've watched him play, the Ivorian's amazing body strength is clearly evident, and with Daniel Sturridge susceptible to regular injuries, it's beneficial to have robust players in the squad.

* According to Swansea boss Gary Monk, Bony has a fierce desire to improve and win. In a recent interview, he enthused: "He [Bony] is a proper professional. He's not the sort of player to take it easy. Every single day he pushes himself and everyone around him. The more players like that you have in your squad, the better you're going to be.". Sounds familiar? I can think of another recent LFC player who constantly pushed for the best, and always demanded 110% effort and commitment.

Alas, Liverpool may have missed the boat. Earlier this month, Bony suggested that he's happy at Swansea, and seemingly ruled out the possibility of leaving. He told Jeune Afrique:

"If I wanted to go, I would have done, but there has never been anything other than speculation re Monaco, Liverpool or Tottenham. I’m fine in Swansea. It is even possible that I extend my contract"

I'd take Bony over Balotelli, Lambert, and Borini every day of the week.

if we dont sign bony and martinez , higuain is a great option

makes you think how we signed balotelli when theese three great strikers could have possibly been bought
is it because they are more expensive in which case it reflects badly on fsg who were meant to give us more money in January and br who wasted money on less important positions

  5. Problem with Bony is the Africa Cup. So not a signing that can make a straight impact...maybe better as a summer signing..
But yes, Bony is a 15-20 goal a season striker and with his style he can easily play another 10 years...

Why on earth would you think thatat you could get Bony for just £19m?

I was thinking what would be a successful season for us:

    4th spot
    league cup win
champions league last 16 or europa league win
    fa cup win

if we can win three trophies it will be fantastic

  9. You're back! Where have you been?

  10. Who are these fans with this "irrational" attitude?

  11. You'll never crack the code

    ReplyDelete
  12. If we can get top 4 this season it would be equal to a trophy:d

    ReplyDelete
  13. I would love Schneiderlin and Tevez

  14. You sound like Wenger

  15. He is back all over the place...

  16. The ones who questioned his pedigree on the basis of the Dutch league being inferior, then when he continues that form. Oh beware he could be another Benteke despite Benteke not having the same scoring record.
Then there's the huge lack of appreciation for Bony's build up play, his touch for his first goal vs Leicester was immaculate. He's also been stereotyped as a static player who doesn't do build up play. As we've seen Swansea also play on the break & Bony'so desire to get in the box has to be admired. Bony puts the fear in most defenders with his strength & aerial ability, just ask Skrtel. I believe he could be our Drogba which would be a gargantuan upgrade from Lambert. Who along with Borini should be shown the door at the earliest opportunity.

  17. back with comparing players .........give it a rest

  18. Of all the Southampton players last season, I liked Jay Rodriguez the most. Unfortunately, he got injured during the transfer window. He is much more direct and effective than Lambert or Lallana. He was their top-scorer too, I think. Schneiderlin has improved a lot more this season, so I think we should go for him.

    ReplyDelete
  19. 25mn max based on current form.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I read that if we sell Borini for 14 mill we will be approximately on zero with FFP. That means we can buy players worth as much as Lukas and Suso combined, shell we succeed in offloading devoted Italian. Johnson and Aspas might get us some money too, but I doubt that will add up to 19 mill. And if it does I would risk the FFP and go for Reus. If we can't get him, than Bony sounds perfect.

    ReplyDelete
  21. We should not sell Borini, he is a good backup player. Next year, we should offload Lambert. I am not in favor of selling Coates, Suso, Lucas either. We must sell Johnson, Aspas and Luis Alberto,

    ReplyDelete
  22. Next year, we will have Balo, Origi, Sturridge and Borini. All four are good players and can improve a lot this season. Lambert should go to a club where he can play regularly. I think he is a type of player who needs regular football to get in form, like Rooney. I think 4mn (plus add ons) was too much for him.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Bony is a good player, definitely. I think he is better than Southampton's Pelle.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Does any1 wonder why all(majority) our signing is very good before suddenly came to LFC is flop??? Tactics is the problem so doesn't matter BONY or Messi or C7 if he not fully utilize in proper way

    ReplyDelete
  25. Manchester United agree 56mn (Euro) permanent Falcao deal.

    ReplyDelete
  26. 240 k per week.. there is no god

    ReplyDelete
  27. I maintain the frenchman is there best player.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I like Rodriguez too, but I was just praying though that he wasn't going to be our 'marquee' striker. Lambert has played like a big lumpy sack of potatoes. Schneiderlin is no superstar but would do a great job for us. My dream DM however is a big, tall player who doesn't get knocked over by anyone.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Schneiderlin is more like Tony Kroos. We should have gone for Xabi Alonso.

    ReplyDelete
  30. After seeing Newcastle play so well and have now won two away games in a row, it could be a really tough assignment for us. We have to play two strikers regardless of who the strikers are. Also, we should rest Sterling for this game as well as he has looked off the boil.

maybe but i really want to see markovic play games
that is the way sterling improved
when rodgers had no other choice first few games he was horrible
    and looked worse off bench

played a few games raheem did got a goal now is one of our better players

  37. Alonso was never going to come though. He has a certain principle about going back to clubs he has wonderful memories at.

    ReplyDelete
  38. That's only when they're paired together as pivots.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Seriously, if Lambert wasn't a Scouser who trialled here once upon a time, he wouldn't be at the club.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Last season too mate.

  41. On a different track.. I see Tom Ince has gone on loan to Nottingham Forest..

So one minute he turns down a move to Inter Milan and now playing he is playing the Championship.. damn

    ReplyDelete
  42. Yeah that could be a very tricky game

    ReplyDelete
  43. Well the deal has been agreed in principle with Monaco. We will have to wait and see if he signs.

I suspect that he will not make do anything until he see's where Man Utd finish in the league and if RM come after him.

    ReplyDelete
  44. He almost rejoined us last year or the year before. Player with great potential but one who is not fulfilling it.

    ReplyDelete
  45. At his age, he will not have many options if he suffers from injuries this season. IMO he will sign 200%.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Well I think it is more his attitude that is the problem.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Yea he never left... Haha

    ReplyDelete
  48. Maybe he is not willing to sacrifice first team football or made stupid wage demands from Inter.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Play either further forward and you lack legs. Perhaps not in bursts but you certainly will over the whole game.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Apparently we are in 'pole position' to sign Reus for 32m

    ReplyDelete

reus would rather join other clubs
    bayern bound

  52. We've been pole position for about 3 month now lol

  53. A major news channel reported that I'm passing it on- personally I think BR will sign nobody in Jan

    ReplyDelete
  54. Good finisher, but the problem we have is we don't create enough chances to be finished and he relies heavily on service. Most of his goals are one touch finishes in the box from crosses. Our wide players are bought not for their delivery but for their potential to get in behind and score goals. He is a box player and like most target men would suffer in our team until we choose to buy wide players for their delivery. BTW Wayne Routledge has everything down that left side, patience, goals, delivery, beats his man on the outside AND comes inside and actually looks like a play maker. His improvement has been immense. We should be talking about Routledge or Montero and why we cant spot genuine talent and then stick with it. Robbie Fowler would struggle for chances in this side on his own up top as does Sturridge. Suarez was four players in one and occupied an entire back four by himself. Bony would struggle.

Borini also has a happy knack of scoring against Newcastle, so probably deserves a chance.
2 up front is surely the way to go.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Markovic looks a complete waste of money - please prove me wrong son.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Definitely think we should play Balotelli and Borini up top against Newcastle. Borini's workrate is really good which means he can press from the front and set the teams tempo. It also means Balotelli can stay in and around the box which should help his chances of scorin. I'd like to see the diamond employed against Newcastle with Countinho and Sterling switching in the number 10 role. Lucas should be the DM with Hendo in front of him and, dare I say it, the skipper on the bench. Not gonna happen, but I think it's worth a go!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Gerhard needs to come off the bench or get subbed at 60 min.Lucas needs to be brought back in to support our ailing defence.Borini and Ballo up front with Sterling just behind.Coutinho for creativeness deeper in midfield with Hendo to ram anything in sight. Rodgers needs to be more flexible in his approach. What worked last season won't this time around. Especially without SnS.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Borini's cross was the best ball of the season. Against QPR we needed two own goals admittedly forced by applying pressure but own goals none the less. Apart from Gerrard's set pieces it was one of the few moments of end product we have produced all season. He should stay in the side.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I would never sell Suso, but realisticly- he is gone.. Borini too probably.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Borini could still have a chance. It is now or never for him. If he performs well and score goals, the fan pressure will stop Rodgers from selling him.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I think Sterling should take an extended rest. The League Cup game was technically not a rest because in last season terms, he would not have missed any game as we only had one game a week. Sterling was looked off the boil ever since the Basel game and he deserves rest. Give Coutinho and Lallana a chance to develop together and same with Balo and Borini.

    ReplyDelete

    Jaimie
dont you think kolo and lovren should be given a go ?
skrtels one of my favorite players but kolo and lovren look like they are on the same page
they are both front foot defenders and done well vs gomis

    ReplyDelete
  65. What makes you think Lucas will retain his place? I expect gerrard to drop back to being the deepest midfielder with Lucas dropping to the bench, freeing up a space for Borini. I would give him a go

    ReplyDelete
  66. Borini deserves to start against Newcastle, especially considering Sterling's indifferent form of late. It should be a battle between Lallana and Coutinho for the attacking midfield slot, unless Lallana simply replaces Markovic. After Lucas and Henderson's very good and dominant performance, they should retain their spots. Lucas, at least, because Hendo drifted out of the game a times, so maybe Can or Allen could take his place. Gerrard should start on the bench and come on if necessary.

I live in hope that form dictates selections.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I've seen Gerrard burst into the box or onto a ball a couple of times at a rate of knots! its not that he is slow he just chooses not to sprint unless he might get a direct shot at goal at the end of it. His legs a carefully hidden away as apposed to 'lost'.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Why would Lucas start getting the nod? Did well enough but I doubt he will start. So Sqp Gerrard fo deepest position and Couts left side Sterling behind Balo and Borini. I doubt it will be the formation but still.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Carefully hidden due to not being Be to do it a whole game. Like I said in the earlier post. He can run at times but he has to manage himself. Or that is how it seems. The only reason for jogging at times he should be running. It's not just pace but stamina.

    ReplyDelete

  71. Yeah, that's true. But systematically speaking, ignoring their fitness, it works well enough.

    ReplyDelete
  72. It pees me off that LFC has a manager that is clueless & hopeless when it comes to having a football minded brain. The opportunities were all their last season to bring in top class forwards and B.R blew every one of them. This season is slipping away, and sadly in the end LFC is back at square one.Well done Brendan, learn your trade elsewhere.

    ReplyDelete
  73. He does not suit our system..i would rather go for Berahino or a proven fast, pacy and tricky striker
