It's On: BR to make £30m offer for 'great' goalscorer & LFC are favourites to sign

During the summer transfer window, Liverpool were regularly linked with a €20m move for Paris St. Germain star Ezequiel Lavezzi, and new reports suggest that the Reds are set to make a blockbuster transfer offer for the 'phenomenal' attacker.

According to The Mirror this week:

* Liverpool are planning to make a £30m offer for Lavezzi in January.

* Despite interest from other clubs, Liverpool are allegedly in the 'driving seat' for the Argentine attacker.

To me, this story sounds like BS suspiciously unrealistic. £30m for a 29 year old striker? In my view, there's absolutely no chance of that happening, though it's easy to see Lavezzi's appeal to Rodgers:

* Versatile, and can play as striker, or out wide.
* Works very hard on the field, and is good defensively.
* Has pace, which is always a plus for any attacking player.

Lavezzi is the archetypal Rodgers player, and Argentina boss Alejandro Sabella underlined this in June, when he highlighted Lavezzi's positive influence on his squad. He enthused:

"Players like Lavezzi are always very positive, because they keep players happy. They keep a nice atmosphere in the group. And Lavezzi is an excellent player. He never makes negative comments, and he is always supporting the team."

Creative stats for PSG:

* 23 goals/18 assists in 96 appearances,
* Goal every 3.9 games.
* Goal/assist every 2.1 games.

With Sturridge increasingly injury prone, it's a priority to have another quality forward player who is seemingly impervious to injury, and Lavezzi - nicknamed 'The Beast' by the Argentina media - certainly fits the bill:

* 284 appearances in the last 7 years.
* Averages 40 games a season.
* Missed only 12 games through injury in the last 10 years.

There are plenty of other options out there for £30m, and if Liverpool splurge that amount of money on Lavezzi, it will (IMO) be a mistake. That said, the Argentine has not completed a full 90 minutes for PSG this season, which suggests he's surplus to requirements, and for the right price, he is a great player to have in the squad, for the following reasons:

* Huge Champions League experience, which is lacking in LFC's current squad.
* The finished article, and capable of coming in and making an immediate impact.
* Superior option to both Fabio Borini and Rickie Lambert.
* Will improve the overall quality of the squad.
* Will score and create goals to help fill the Suarez void.
* A steady, consistent player who rarely gets injured.
* Strong, hard-working, and physical presence on the field. Perfect fit for the Prem.
* Unlikely to moan if he's not in the starting line-up every week.
* Young players like Coutinho, Sterling, and Markovic can learn from his experience.

The question is, what is a reasonable price? £30m is unreasonable, but if LFC could get Lavezzi for €12-€15m, then it's arguably worth it.

  2. NON STARTER - FSG Transfer policy will ensure that and I agree with them - too old at that price - still think Mario will come good but need a partner - Sturidge maybe ? He looked great with Tevez at City

  3. SUSO MUST STAY -He is far better than half the names being touted and I think he will bring the best out of Mario and Sturidge - GIVE HIM A NEW CONTRACT -or AC Milan will

  4. 30 for a 29 years old? haha will never happen..

  5. I can see the attraction of Lavezzi. He has that hustling, bustling playing style similar to Suarez, just without all the goals. But this thing of replacing Suarez is a nonsense. He does not need to be replaced, his goals do. Paying £30M for a 29 year old Lavezzi would smack of desperation and would not solve our present problem. He is not prolific and plays more as a second striker, so there's no guarantee that he would do well in the abscence of sturridge. We need someone who can lead the line.

  6. 18m and now its 30m. 18 was already too much so im glad this is rubbish.

  7. I don't believe the "Mirror". Liverpool would never spend 30m on anyone above 29yrs old let alone Lavezzi.

  8. Could get Reus 25m but his wage demands could scupper that- please don't go for Lavezzi

  10. 14-20 max.... Marko & Lallana for 20 & 25 but Salah & Konoplyanka were ignored for 12,16 mill resp, so with the transfer policie$ of LFC who knows.... I still prefer the nuisance and speed of Cavani.

  12. yep ... and if it's BS, why report it again.

  13. Yeah, those much smaller fees would make sense, otherwise it seems like pure speculation. He could just as easily struggle to do well in the league although he does seem to have the pedigree. I'd have him for 10-15 million euros at most.

  16. Latest rumour

    Liverpool will consider a January move for West Brom striker Saido Berahino. The Baggies believe Berahino is worth in excess of £25m. Liverpool's potential interest could see a bidding battle with Tottenham.

    If he is worth in excess of £25m then we may as well keep Borini. Still think he should be playing alongside Balotelli at the moment.

  29. Total BS hopefully. Worryingly 66% of people who voted on this website want him. Hopefully Liverpool aren't as desperate

  30. Didn't realise Johnson on 150 grand ok so no reason whatsoever for not going all out for Reus

  31. Once again the universe has conspired to rub it in our faces with a sublime Samule Eto'o performance. And judging by the way Newcastle picked up all the points against Spurs, our next league game against them wont be an easy three points as I had previously hoped.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Falcao not even on UTD's bench. Injured obviously. Bullet dodged.

    ReplyDelete
  33. getting desperate are we ?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Having a player that is costing you an arm and leg on the treatment table is not the best position to be in. If there is a problem with Falcao's knee then he ain't going to play anytime soon.

    Bullet well and truly dodged.

  35. I agree. But it says a lot about our current predicament if our only shred of consolation is when we look at the plight of the ones that got away :)

    ReplyDelete
  36. Yes I noticed that and the Capital B and N ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  37. Haha what is wrong with you lot? I'm going to be totally honest, each and every one of your signings are utterly useless. All of your strikers a waste of space. There shouldn't be people backing guys like bOrini, and flopatelli. You could learn something. Adam lallana = 25. Fabregas= 30. So stop giving it the large liverpool fans. Oh, and ynwa LOL

  38. if your banking on sturridge your on a hiding to nothing the guy takes months to shake of little knocks ,im having real concerns about our season hinging on him, theres seems more chance of lord lucan getting a game

  40. good team if sturridge stays fit and martines comes, the reality of both happening though is highly unlikle;y

  41. with sturridges prolonged absence ive a feeling rogers will slowly go into panic mode, his team formation stinks of a manager trying not lose as opposed to trying to win ....standard tactics away at Chelsea but at home to Hull such negative vibes can not in still confidence

    ReplyDelete
  42. i agree but why not give him and balo a go for curiosities sake if nothing else

  43. Letter start with those in the bench and see the cure of the malady,how can you keepon agonizing yet u haven't used over the counter prescription before going to a refferal

  44. Joel Matt Murdock Hwa6:13 am, October 27, 2014

    Ahem...this is not Fantasy Football. Brendan can sign the best players in the world, and if he doesn't have a clue what to do, all the money will go into the drain.

    Now into the 3rd season, I'm very shocked that Brendan is still tweaking with the tactics and formation. I always thought he has a certain blueprint of how he wants his players to play, and why the hell he is deploying 4231 formation when he clearly knows Balo plays best with another striker partner? We played our best football with 442 diamond formation last season, why the hell he is tweaking it this season?

    I don't blame Balotelli at all. I blame Brendan and his tactics. Can anyone remember we were struggling when we played 4231 with Suarez alone upfront??? He was easily marked out, and there went our attacking threat. That's Suarez, the world class player, who was also struggling playing solo!

    Is it because he wants to stop conceding goal, hence deploy 3 DEFENSIVE midfielders in every single game? FYI, that didn't work, and we still concede. So why still play with 3 DEFENSIVE midfielders???

    Why can't he give Lambert a run of game upfront with Balotelli? Lambert is perceived slow, but who cares if he can get the goals??? Anyone watching Southampton last season? I don't think he was slow.

    The most important question: Is Brendan trying to get himself sacked by tweaking his tactics and formation after third season in charge?

    ReplyDelete
  45. We need a goalscorer, something which Lavezzi is not. Why not spend the money and match the release clause in Reus' contract which is reported to be £20. Then you get a quick goalscoring player who can play anywhere in attack...

    ReplyDelete
  46. Jesus, £20 is cheap as hell! hahaha i meant 20 million
