'Best in Europe': Carra confirms Liverpool tried to sign 'brilliant' Man Utd legend. Loss?

Over the years, a whole array of top-class central defenders have graced Anfield, and the likes of Phil Thompson, Mark Lawrenson, Alan Hansen, Sami Hyypia, and, of course, Jamie Carragher, put the club's current set of centre-halves to shame. Arch rivals Manchester United have also been blessed with some top class defenders, including recently-departed Nemanja Vidic, who - according to Carra - is the proverbial 'one that got away'.

In his weekend column for the Daily Mail, Carra raved:

"Liverpool tried to buy him [Vidic] in January 2006. I'd have loved to have played alongside him and I'm sure we could have formed a solid partnership.

"His arrival took Ferdinand's performances up another level. They became the best defensive pairing in Europe".

'Brilliant' Vidic was a powerhouse for Man United, but to be honest, he never looked that assured against Liverpool. Fernando Torres gave the Serb a torrid time on more than one occasion, and the Reds' 4-1 victory at Old Trafford in 2009 is a prime example of that.

To be honest, I'm glad that Liverpool didn't sign Vidic as it may have impacted on Sami Hyypia's first team chances. The big Finn is one of my favourite ever LFC players, and five years after leaving Anfield, the gaping void he left at the heart of defence is still to be filled.

That said, Vidic is closer in style to Carra than Hyypia, so perhaps it's Carra who would've found himself warming the bench on a more regular basis...?
