LFC to sign £16m legend? Agent reveals the truth about Liverpool's transfer 'offer'

Reports over the weekend claim that Barcelona legend Victor Valdes has allegedly rejected a four-day trial with Liverpool, designed to assess his fitness ahead of a proposed transfer to the club. Is this really true, though? According to the Spaniard's agent, it's total nonsense.

When asked over the weekend about the alleged rejection, Gines Varvajal dismissed the rumour, and claimed reports of a four day trial are wide of the mark. He told Spanish newspaper Sport:

"Liverpool have not offered us the chance to train with them for four days.

"And we have not rejected the offer, because it is false. That offer was never made to us by Brendan Rodgers nor by Liverpool at any moment."

Despite his Agent's denial, perhaps there's a kernel of truth to the initial 'rejection' story? I doubt Valdes (or his Agent) will publicly admit to rejecting a trial, and with his high profile status, and peerless experience, it's not beyond the realm of possibility that the Spaniard believes that any interested club should just offer him a deal without all the trial hoo-haa.

After all, Valdes is 32 years old, and a multiple trophy winner with one of the greatest clubs on the planet. At this stage of his career, he may think that trialling is beneath him, and that a standard club medical is all that's required.

I can certainly understand that thought-process, but given Valdes' knee ligament problem, it makes perfect sense to put him through medical tests ahead a move to Anfield.

Whatever happens, a player with Valdes' history - and winning mentality - will be a massive boost for the squad, and to get him as a free agent - when only a year ago he was valued at £16m - will be a major transfer coup.

With any luck, Liverpool can overcome whatever hurdles are in the way, and have Valdes in place for the club's league game with QPR this weekend.

  1. An agent revealing the truth :) now there's a thing.

  3. Nothing wrong with a fitness trial. Think of it as an extended medical. After an ACL reconstruction I think it's perfectly reasonable. The team doctor can do the usual tests, get the player to hop around a bit, maybe run his through some paces on the training pitch, but in terms of high intensity work it's not possible to be sure in an afternoon. I would think that Valdes himself would not be 100% sure of his fitness so there is nothing that strange about the idea and he shouldn't take it personally.

  4. From the sounds of things, a trial would be a few weeks away anyway.
With regards to the trial, it's really not an unreasonable request. Valdes can't honestly think that any club are going to offer him a contract on the kind of wages he wants, without him proving his fitness first and It would be totally irresponsible of the club to do so

  5. Maybe this truth-telling agent has been at the truth-telling agent, sodium pentothal?

  6. That is what he said he had taken but I am not sure I believe him

  7. Given BR's hubris he probably thinks he could turn him into a half decent keeper who could even go on to win some trophies :-o

  8. Not to worry, he swore he'd take a polygraph to prove he'd taken sodium pentothal.

No choice we forced to sigin Valdes (a proper leader at behind) bcoz Lovren n co cant organize defend well...Reina can do it but mayb his wage is too good (i guess the reason we sell him).. Once again it show BR transfer f*** up that he may think Lovren can settle down our problem ! I guess the problem is come from our DM cant protect us properly and bcoz he a capt/legend/icon so BR too scare to dump him at bench...

I urge BR give back license to gerrard moving further up and i believe he can solve that "LOL Balo" problem as well

  10. I don't see why Valdes should be offended by having to do a trial. It's certainly not a question of his skill, it's purely related to how fit he is.

  11. I can though see why the player might regard a longer than usual medical trial as a bit of a cheek depending on how it is put to him.

If you cancel a transfer due to medical concerns (Remy) then it seems odd not to sign a player if they pass a medical. Plenty of players have carried on after ACL and a goalkeeper might be at less risk of it affecting his performance.

  12. Why not question of his skill? He was underperforming before his, what, 8 months injury?

    ReplyDelete
  13. And if Liverpool had doubts about his ability due to his performance before the injury, why would they even offer him a fitness trial? When do clubs ever actually do that? This is why scouts exist.

  14. He better accept a trial (with any club), or when no one offers him a contract.

He'll have to resort too Owen Hargreaves style Youtube video's to prove his fitness.... in a Lycra onesie.

  15. Scouting what? He hasn`t played for ages.

  16. OK, but Nick said that it isn`t matter of skill trial and I am saying it should be.

  17. Markovic fit to play for Serbia today.

  18. good news, we will need him

  19. Think so too. If he gets a good game today, he would be my choice for poor QPR.

  20. for the reserves ;-)

  21. true, QPR is such a broken team, we should rest some guys for real

  22. For a move ..........

  23. Maybe he is planning family or something..

  24. .... to the reserves

  25. Jaimie are you working on an article about Roy being a massive tool bag?

  26. words trickle down his lips like warm diarrhea.

  27. That's his problem. His runs are good, he works his socks off but he's simply not lethal enough in front of goal for a club with our ambitions. I feel genuinely sorry for Borini cos he's such an honest professional and he genuinely realises how lucky he is to be at a club like liverpool but I fear he's just not quite good enough

    ReplyDelete
  28. Dude! If Liverpool had concerning doubts about Valdes' actual skill, then they wouldn't be in negotiations with him. Why would you negotiate to a buy a player that you have big doubts about?

    ReplyDelete
  29. haha...beware guys because even if QPR is lost, we are no better...but in the same way, resting some players will benefit us as we have Madrid coming up next...

    ReplyDelete
  30. Because dude he is probably the only one that has some quality and is available.

    ReplyDelete
  31. So why trial him for quality if it's already known that he is quality?

    ReplyDelete
  32. 8 MONTHS INJURY. BAD FORM BEFORE THAT.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Oh jesus. I already established that the trial is based on his 8 month injury. But that's where it stops. It is absolutely unheard of, and unecessary, to trial a 3 time UCL winner in order to see whether he is good enough for Liverpool. That is what scouts already do when they go and watch games. Please, drum it into your head.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I don`t think he is good enough for Almeria.
What scouts saw is irrelevant because of the long absence from the game, drum it into your head already!!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Oh FFS, you're making us go around in circles now. What scouts saw is definitely relevant. They saw that he has enough quality. The trial is based on his fitness as a result of 8 months out. You don't need to also trial him for overall talent if scouts already told you that he has enough talent. That is a total waste of time and resources. It shouldn't be like auditioning for a play. When you're a professional, you audition by trying to play well at your current club.

  36. You are making us go in circles from post number one.

  37. considering the fact that we sighed so many disabled players in the summer window for just over 100 mil. takeing a chance valdes for would hardly be a gamble. injury or not remember that we would be singing a keeper and not an infield player that would be required to run for most of the game. so movement my valdes will be fairly limited. I SAY TAKE HIM ON AND JUST MAYBE HE COULD BE OUR SAVIOR.
