Slated: Barton blasts 'stupid' £29m LFC star, & claims Man Utd flop is 'better' and more 'selfless' for England

QPR midfielder Joey Barton has delivered a withering assessment of Liverpool star Daniel Sturridge, accusing the striker of selfishness, and hinting that he's not a team player for the England national team.

Speaking to The Telegraph this week, Barton:

* Slammed Sturridge's 'stupid' robotic goal celebration, and argued that he should rush to celebrate with team-mates instead of celebrating by himself (!)

* Claimed that England "wouldn’t have won the [Switzerland] game with Sturridge" because he’s an 'individual', who prioritises scoring, doing 'tricks' and trying to shoot over passing.

* Insisted that Danny Welbeck is 'much better for the team' and is a 'much more selfless player' for England than Sturridge.

Barton is simply the latest in a long line of people to perpetuate a well-worn cliche about Sturridge here, i.e. that he's a selfish player. In fact, the only thing missing from his mean-spirited tirade is the suggestion that the Liverpool striker is 'arrogant', which is the other ridiculous cliche with which Sturridge is unfairly associated.

Barton's reasoning is tenuous at best: Sturridge spends ten seconds doing his trademark celebration, and that means he's selfish? Lots of players run off and celebrate solo after scoring; not all players immediately rush to embrace their team-mates, or the goal-creator.

Is there something inherently selfish about this? Only in a Seinfeldian bizarro world.

Additionally, £29m-rated Sturridge's job is to score goals, which is why he prioritises this at every opportunity. Many of the world's top striker are the same, and this hunger to score at every opportunity fuels Sturridge's prodigious strike-rate.

Danny Welbeck is goalscoring pauper next to Sturridge, and when he is capable of contributing 46 goals/assists in 50 games, then we'll talk.

NOTE: Any comments personally insulting Barton will be deleted.

  1. Why are you giving Joey Barton's opinion air time?

  2. I must admit I never thought I would see the day when I wholeheartedly agreed with Joey Barton ............and fortunately I still haven't.

If any one might have dubious motives for criticising Sturridge it's him

    ReplyDelete
  3. People in England still seem to rate players like Welbeck over Sturridge. These are the kind of reasons why they keep making a fool of themselves in international competitions and get found out as soon as they meet half-decent opposition.

    ReplyDelete
  4. barton is a waste of space, should not be given time of day, even here on scum page. sturridge is a decent player barton should think he is lucky he isnt cleaning his boots everyweek

    ReplyDelete
  5. Barton doesn't like players with skill/style because he never had any himself.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Joey Barton is a tit anyway. Another waste of reading time. Come on jk write something better than this. Nobody cares about what he thinks or says. The lad is just a thug end of.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Joey Barton.....in the nicest possible way......you are a thuggish c**t and have no right to make an assessment on a man like Daniel Sturridge. Put football aside, you are a racist thug who isn't fit to walk this earth, let alone pass judgement on one of England's top players. You wait till he rips QPR apart, I bet you're praying he is still injured. If he isn't, you're going to thoroughly enjoy playing against Mario, let's hope he isn't out to get you!

  8. there is so much you could say in reply to him but I dont think even Joey Barton takes himself seriously....what a clown

did anyone else see barton on that question time ?
he is clueless as they come , you don't know anything about politics and are arguing with experts

sturridge presence will open up space for other players

  10. My heart was in my mouth until I got past the ellipsis. Joey Barton's is probably on his shoulder with an arrow through it.

  11. Think what you like about Joey Barton but I think he regularly speaks sense. He also has the guts to speak his opinion even if it does go against the grain. In the Uk people regularly think one thing and say another just to be part of the herd. Sturridge is a top top striker and yes strikers need an elimant of selfishness however not to the detriment of the team and I feel he did that at the World Cup a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  12. They say strikers should be selfish, however I do think there is an element of truth in what Barton says! Sturridge is a decent player but he tends to try the impossible at times instead of slipping a team mate in! I would say his decision making is his poorest quality! He has many good qualities too, pace, movement etc!

but barton is a thug and has been arrested while his brother is a murderer

    ReplyDelete
  14. Why bring his brother in it ?

    ReplyDelete
  15. I agree with you, but I don't think it's fair to bring his brother into it. Tim Cahill's brother is also a murderer.

  16. Did you watch the World Cup? We went with Sturridge and he was extremely disappointing! Your point makes no sense

a goal on the first game my man u mates said him and sterling were the only players to play

against uruaguay again most dangerous player created rooneys goal

costa rica he had an off day

plus eh is playing for roy who made torres from a world class striker to average and almost got us relegated

  19. I saw Narton on Question time along with half of twitter and I have to say most people were very positive about his arguments. Barton is far more educated and informed than 99% of the premier league as well as 99% of fans it seems.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I'm talking about the football philosophy, prioritising stamina and 'workrate' over creativity. Our players don't even look like themselves with England. I think my point does make sense.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Nevergonnacrackthecode11:21 am, September 13, 2014

please he just used the most simplistic arguments

    ReplyDelete
  22. I think you got him mixed up with the guy in the middle. He was the dick on the right making stupid sexist analogies.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Exactly. That has absolutely nothing to do with anything.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Why don't you attack the argument instead of the person? What does this have to do with Barton's comments on Sturridge?

    ReplyDelete
  25. It was like a comedy sketch - like something from "The Office" only more excruciatingly embarrassing.

The twitter comments were mostly and quite rightly highly critical of the outrageous sexist content of one of his early comments

    ReplyDelete
  26. Agree. Typical English football mindset.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Most people want to disagree with Barton because he's Joey Barton - the truth is however, almost everything he says is actually spot on. Sturridge is infuriating, the number of times he has to faff around with the ball instead of passing it, and the only reason he as made to look like a world class player at Liverpool was because of a certain Luis Suarez, who not only had superior work rate, finishing and hunger, but he also passed the ball sometimes.

Sturridge does seem to always have to do a trick, then blast it into the side netting, or simply get the ball taken off him. He's a liability unless he has someone superior up with him - let's see how he fares this season before slamming Barton for saying what many of us have been thinking.

    ReplyDelete
  28. 'Many of us' - speak for yourself. Your assessment of Sturridge is so woefully wide of the mark that it's not even worth responding.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Oh I've gone off him now! ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  30. So it's OK to say someone's point makes no sense?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Nevergonnacrackthecode11:36 am, September 13, 2014

    alright i will
first his assumption england will not win with sturridge has no basis , sturridge has played the diamond and has a unbelievable understanding with sterling
but predicting weather such an element would change a game is hard to do

secondly his celebration has nothing to do with anything , goals dont even have to be celebrated

    ReplyDelete
  32. Nevergonnacrackthecode11:37 am, September 13, 2014

more goals then anyone else in 50 games for liverpool

and the argument that is because of suarez has no basis because he is statistically more potent by himself , 11 goals and suarez 10 match ban

    ReplyDelete
  33. Looks like it's "Rico time".......Every other comment is from him and he's even arguing with himself - disqus again!

fabian delph has 12 months left in his contract
maybe we should scout him he looked boss in that diamond
if lucas leaves he could be a good replacement on a cut price deal

    ReplyDelete
  36. I think Joey Barton is in no place to judge who or not is helpful for the England team. If you looked at the WC Eng matches, Sturridge and Sterling were not their best and still Englands best players. To just assume that DS would have cost the match against the Swiss is a personal insult to Sturridge and Barton cannot do that. Welbeck was also playing in the WC and nothing changed. Hopefully, we ignore these comments.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I agree it can be brave to go against the prevailing view. Equally it can become a habit just to be controversial and to provoke a response. Now who else does that remind me of from time to time?

Agree strikers need to be a bit selfish and it can sometimes frustrate fans and colleagues alike. Often though the player he might pass to is even more likely to make a mess of it than him. If he started to pass too often he'd be criticised for not taking responsibility as a striker.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Suarez was suspended for 10 matches and Sturridge managed 11 goals during that period. I guess the Sturridge bashers will always come up with something anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Don't even know where to start on this one. Considering he is using someones goal celebration to have a pop at them really shows how weak his arguement is.
I don't know where his ire is coming from, but it is clearly mis-placed. Sturridge is not the reason for Englands under-performance on the world stage. Their fear of playing an attacking, passing game is what has stunted them for so many years. Their main style of play is based on disrupting opponents and limiting goals conceded, instead of actually setting up to attack.
The succession of managers who prioritise caution over ambition has wasted some top talent and will continue to do so until they bring their national team into the era of modern football.
    Just my opinion.

  42. Posting something Joey Brainless Barton said here is disrespect towards the faithful visitors of this page... And about Welbeck, it was the first time I saw Welbeck having a good game and the Arsenal fans made him the next Thierry Henry... A dismal attempt to convince themselves that the £16M purchase is not overpriced by £13M... Comparing DS with him is a joke...

    ReplyDelete
  43. Studge has good feet... When he receives the ball, he can instantly position his body to unleash a shot before the defender can say 'oh crap'. Yeah, at times, he can be wasteful, but his talent is undeniable and he is a born scorer...

Who gives a flying Matilda what joey barton thinks?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Typical shortsighted what have you done for me in the last game mentality.Danny Welbeck scores a couple of goals for England and Joey Barton and others go over the top with praise, importance and player assessment.
Welbeck has scored 37 league goals in 178 matches.A goal every 4.8 games.A very poor record. Most of those matches were played for Man Utd under SAF.They didn't struggle to make good chances!
Daniel Sturridge's career goal average. He gets on the scoresheet every 2.5 games.75 goals in 192 matches.DS was only behind Suarez in the race for the golden boot last season.
I wouldn't swap Sturridge for Danny Welbeck. It will only take DS to recover from injury and get a brace to change the mind of Joey Barton who's high on Welbeck this week.
The goal celebration comment is stupid. He probably had a short piece so came up with nonsense to fill his section in The Telegraph.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Yeah we're in fractions already

    ReplyDelete
  48. I'm sure Sturridge won't be losing any sleep over a player who has never played for a champions league club and I believe has one solitary cap for England?
Barton speaks about him not being a team player... How much of a team player has he been over the years? Between prison sentences and hefty suspensions, how many of his clubs and team mates over the years have thought "Good old Joey, always puts the team first." Not too many I would've thought.
Daniel Sturridge has been an absolute revelation since coming to Liverpool and has been integral to our success. His creative output is second to none.
Couldn't care less what he does for England

    ReplyDelete
  49. To be fair, it's been reduced by 50 and now it's on -50.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Danny Welbeck is a good player. Alexis and Ozil are so bad for Arsenal it's amazing. Good examples of what you can end up with when you go for "marquee signings" on their way back down the ladder.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Fed up with the nonsense1:46 pm, September 13, 2014

Hey! Hey! Hey! Hold on now. Both Daniels are phenomenal players. No need to disrespect Welbeck. Time will prove me right. In the future, people will wonder why these two were played out of their preferred positions for the first formative years of the professional careers. Mark my words.
Look at Barnes. He wasn't considered by the English fans until he started to tear up the international stage. I wonder why? Just asking!
As for Barton. He needs to go back to charm school. Better yet, infants school.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Wind has blown the marquee away

    ReplyDelete
  53. It's ridiculous seeing someone who screwed up his career criticising Sturridge who is one of the hottest players in the world game. What a joke.

    ReplyDelete
  54. That's laughable man sorry.

    ReplyDelete
  55. But the ref seems to have misunderstood the idea of playing advantage. The team doing the fouling are not supposed to be given the advantage......

    ReplyDelete
  56. Ha. Bit better in the second half anyway. City to lose twice in the first four games of the season? That's already encouraging isn't it...

    ReplyDelete
  57. Sanchez would have been perfect for our style of play. He may not have had the greatest of starts but the amount of work he puts in is extraordinary and has a great touch too. Ozil I agree is terrible and have to disagree about Welbeck. Arsenal are more than welcome to have him.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Welbeck is class mate, you'd appreciate him if he played for us, but he's not important. I had hoped we'd get Sanchez too, but really, he looks the rather unimpressive player the Barca fans warned us he was. Nice goal tho.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Barton should be giving opinions on criminal sentencing not football.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I like Barton, he makes bold remarks that often make sense. Ths one has some grounding but... It's about ballance. His sefishness has rarely, if ever cost us points. He misses an opportunity or two to pass to the teammate in dangerous possition but than he scores or assists in a classy way. Him and Suarez both live for scoring and both attempt the impossible but both scored assisted and created a shed load of goals/ opportunities..
He IS selfish, but keep it up Daniel.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Sturidges goal tally and assists speak for themselves. When Wellbecks is anywhere near perhaps we can then compare. Stupid statement, perhaps thinking before you speak and criticise would be a good idea especially from this Joker

    ReplyDelete
  62. Barton joins a long line of pointless pundits making controversial statements in a desperate attempt to get some attention. I've rarely heard anything from him that was worth listening to. He didn't use his brain much while he was playing ... not much has changed.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Gareth Bale: British players should test themselves abroad - including Liverpool's Raheem Sterling Bale is already luring him away...

    ReplyDelete
  64. Glad that Welbeck is "more of a team player", yet Sturridge's goals help the team more.

Take a guess which every manager will take... the "better team player", or the guy who helps the team more.

In my opinion, any time a striker gets labelled a "better team player", it's trying to hide that fact that he doesn't consistently score or provide assists. Now that I think about it, it's a perfect description for Welbeck. Barton is spot on there!

    ReplyDelete
  65. If joey Barton opens his mouth and nobody cares what he says, did Joey Bary actually say something?

Great result this morning. I guess the next best thing to both City and Arsenal losing is neither winning!

    ReplyDelete
  66. They look like the surprise package this season and they are playing some very good football too.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Welbeck is not a phenomenal player and hasn't shown himself to be one yet.

Not to say it can't happen for him, but in my opinion, he's not anywhere close to Sturridge's level right now.

And that's not even a knock on Welbeck. Few players in the world have done what Sturridge has done since he's arrived at LFC.
