Done Deal: LFC agree one-year deal with Prem club for 'aggressive' £7m star

With Liverpool overflowing with senior central defenders, there's clearly no room for Sebastian Coates at the club, and despite an impressive showing during pre-season, the Uruguayan is set to leave Anfield before the transfer deadline today.

According to Sky Sports:

* Coates has signed for Sunderland on a season-long loan.

* He passed a medical this morning.

* The club photographer has arrived to take photos of Coates, and the deal will be announced imminently.

 photo ScreenShot2014-09-01at163126_zpse90ba4e0.png

Rodgers recently praised Coates for his pre-season performances, but hinted that a move may be on the cards. He told reporters:

"He [Coates] can play football. He has a lovely touch, lovely technique, can pass the ball and can be aggressive. The question for Sebastian will be whether he is going to get enough games that will satisfy his own personal need, because he's a talent"

Unfortunately for him, with Lovren, Skrtel, Sakho, and Toure in the squad, Coates would've been warming the bench for most of the season, so leaving is probably best for his development, and future career.

As always the question to ask is this: will losing Coates make any negative difference to Liverpool's forward progress? As harsh as it sounds, the answer is no, and if he does well at Sunderland (under fellow Uruguayan Gus Poyet), a permanent move may be on the cards next summer.

One major positive: Coates may finally get an extended run of first team football; he'll have the opportunity to show what he can do in the Premier League, which could be beneficial for Liverpool (in terms of sell-on value)

  1. Sebastian Coates falls short of being Liverpool standard but he's got enough ability to have a decent career.Sky Sports News are reporting QPR have made a £10m bid for Fabio Borini with a extra 3m in add ons.We should snap their hands off! He clearly doesn't want a permanent move to Sunderland and the only other options rumoured are loan deals.

  2. Most of them will be loaned again. Does that make any sense? Not really but that's how it goes.

Aspas won't come back. Ilori may get chance as 3rd/4th defender. We have Suso, Alberto and Teixeira. Someone has to go. Wisdom probably has to go too. Smith probably loaned again. Hopefully Ibe and Origi are in squad next season.

I believe Gus will take care of him and he'll start at Sunderland. Good move for all parties, who knows maybe he'll be our future after all or we can sell him to someone for a good price
Is the borini deal confirmed? This window has been an Ian ayre masterclass..

United are mental to go after another striker. Why is he going there when he'll get CL footy at Monaco?

  9. Yeah, one certainly wouldn't want to go posting any unsubstantiated conclusions or withering remarks without a full set of facts would one?

  10. Too risky. He's fresh off a major knee injury and he really hasn't played for two years. There's no way I'd play him over Sakho.

To an extent he would recover United shirt sales which would have taken a hit through kagawa's departure. That aside I really didn't know he never played CL.

346K p/w according to the telegraph;)
But some friends of mine, unfortunately mancs, already saying that its only half of that amount. Either way, do they really need him? You can't play with Rooney, Falcao and RvP upfront.

    ReplyDelete
  24. It is quite laughable that Arsenal have resorted to signing a player that might have pace but has no clue on how to kick a ball.

UTD are well and truly screwed if they do not qualify for CL this season. The vultures are circling and their defence is already proof of that.

  25. With Lallana and Hendo in front of Stevie who will be rested(no internationals finally, and for Villa he is not really needed, at least not for all 90), it could work..

  36. S Coates(24) is not good enough, if he was B Rodgers wouldn't have brought 4 new centre backs to club since his reign. ( Llori(20), Lovren(25), Sakho(24) or K Toure(34) )

C Tiote(28) is like N De Jong(30) not pleasant on the eye, but does the dirty work and his best work off the ball, breaks up play well, puts in crunching tackles, lets opposition teams no they are in a battle when he is up against them and puts fear in opposition teams.

C Tiote(28) is more mobile and better at breaking up play and winning the ball back than L Leiva(27).

C Tiote(28) may not be pleasing on the eye, but he does the dirty work for the team very well when he is injury free and fully fit and would be a great signing for £5-£8M

C Tiote(28) would come in handy away at the Bernabeu when we play R Madrid vs the likes of Bale(25), Benzema((26), Isco(22), Kroos(24), Modric(28), James Rodriguez(23), Jese Rodriguez(21) and Ronaldo(29).

We definately need a class quality Goalkeeper to put great shot stopper S Mignolet(25) On the bench.

B Rodgers should pull out all the stops to bring in M Reus(25) to the club:

Chelsea have brought in four world class players and two class quality players: 3 world class players were brought and one was brought back on loan:

    Courtouis(22), Costa(25),Fabregas(27) and F Luis(29)

    Costing over £80M

Manchester United have brought in three world class players: D Blind(24) , Di Maria(26) and Rojo(24) costing them over £80M and they are on verge of signing Falcao(28) on loan.

B Rodgers needs to go all out and sign M Reus(25) Of Borussia Dortmund for £22-£30M

And then B Rodgers would have signed two world class players this summer for combined total of £38-£46M ( Balotelli(24) and M Reus(25) )

  64. Medicals, to my understanding, are slightly subjective. The club can decide whether or not the player "passes". For example if the club really desperately wanted Remy I'm sure we would've signed him regardless of his potential risk. However as BR pointed out they decided it wasnt worth it or they didnt want to go ahead with it for whatever reason. Chelsea who are more inclined to waste money probably werent that bothered either way if the transfer works out or not so they just signed him. I am disappointed that LFC didnt get Remy as he would've been an excellent addition but the club decided against the move so life goes on.

  75. Fabio Borini thinks he's something special but i think the likes of Sunderland and QPR is his level.I was surprised PL clubs were fighting over his signature and willing to pay over £10m.Is he looking for a loan back to Italy? If so, forget it!
The club shouldn't sanction a move.Borini will be snapped up by a Sampdoria type. Then refuse to sign after the loan expires because he thinks he's at Juve's standard. That's optimistically dependant on a Italian side actually buying a player when the loan is done.Think Aquilani.
Let him play in the reserves until the next transfer window.Maybe that will force him to think more realistically.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I hear the ever popular SC....correction..M...ousetrap was also on the syllabus!

PS - Somebody had nicked the buzzer apparently!

But seriously folks, it is odd that there could be significant difference of opinion about his physical ability to play. Maybe there is a perceived weakness that Chelsea think they can manage via limited game time. There again maybe they think he's worth a risk at the price.

Or maybe there has been an elaborate deception.

I'm sure all will become apparent in due course.

    ReplyDelete
  88. I'm not sure if Drogba has a full shift in him at his age. So if Costa got injured (and he will) Remy will probably share the minutes with Drogba. The only alternative is Schurle down the middle.

I think Balotelli has the greater potential to get on a roll than Remy. And Sturridge looks happy to oblige/help Balotelli. I'm not sure he would have been so happy to share the limelight with Remy.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Had we signed Remy then probably would not have done Balotelli. Out of the two Balotelli has more potential. I don't think Brendan would have signed both.

    ReplyDelete
  90. A good situation for Coates. I always liked him and was excited to see him come to Liverpool. Having only played in South America he was already a regular in a very good Uruguay team but maybe the adjustment to what was needed in England didn't quite work. It's a big step up from Uruguay club football to playing in Europe. The knee injury is always a huge issue, a possible career ending problem, but he seems to have come back well and I'm glad. He'll get to work alongside a defender who has good experience. People might not rate O'Shea that much any more but we shouldn't underestimate the football education a player gets at United. If Coates is a first team regular at Sunderland he'll certainly have plenty of defensive work to do and if he stays injury free he'll end up being a valuable player. We can then either sell him to recover the initial fee or bring him back to be a part of the squad. Some would question the wisdom of spending so much money on youth (Coates + Ilori = significantly more than Southampton paid for Lovren) but if one of them comes good for Liverpool then there is no problem. Or if neither quite makes it and we sell them on for a decent fee.

JK, you've made plenty of comments about loan players at Liverpool never making it and you're absolutely right, it rarely means they come back to play first team football. What I'm happy to see, however, is that Liverpool are maintaining the value of these players so that at the very least we're able to sell them on and not lose money on the transfers. Borini has undermined that plan with his personal choices (his right to do so) but at least we know there are teams who will pay 10 million or more for his services. Stoke were willing to pay what we asked for Assaidi, Suso has maintained his worth, Coates should be worth at least 7 million at the end of the year ... at the very least the club is doing good business with these players. It means very little in terms of first team impact but it's good asset management. The club is being smart in that regard, maintaining a large squad of players with potential but keeping many of them off the wage bill and not costing the club. Of course if they never make it as Liverpool then it all seems a bit pointless, just trading players around the world for no reason, but I like to see the club managing their risks.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Rooney - Van Persie - Falcao.........................

Looks like Rooney is going to be dropped deeper if they are all going to play at the same time?

He'll have steam coming out of his ears and end up picking up cards and suspensions. Both Rooney and Van Persie pick up cards when they go into frustrated mode....................

Interesting! I'm not sure how long Rooney will hang on to that captains armband.

    ReplyDelete
  92. That's a bit melodramatic don't you think? He's entitled to do what he thinks is best for his career. The thing is that if Liverpool have one injured striker then Borini will be on the bench. Two injured strikers and he'll almost certainly get to play. To him that's a situation he wants to be in, especially if it means CL football.

We don't need to resent the guy because he wants to stay and play for us, that's ridiculous. Rodgers brought him here and he signed a contract. We have no problem going against player wishes like when we kept Suarez and he wanted to go, so we should be willing to accept other situations like this.

I agree that it would have been best for him to move on, we could do with the extra money and he'd be more likely to play for QPR or Sunderland. But if he's not interested in doing that, if he still wants to try and prove himself at a top club then I don't think we're really so high and mighty that we can assume Liverpool is too good for players like him. Who knows, if we have some injury problems then Borini could be an important squad player who scores some important goals.

    ReplyDelete
  93. I'm find with that. They won't play much but I have no problem having these guys sitting deep in the squad, ready to play if we need them. They'll get a run out in some cup games, maybe even a CL tie if we're lucky enough to guarantee qualification from the group stage a bit early. Lucas is still a good defensive midfield players and Suso has good qualities. They'll add to the training squad, meaning we'll have more quality at Melwood keeping everyone on their toes. So long as the feeling in the group is maintained it is not a bad thing for the club to have players like this hanging around a bit longer than needed. Lucas will be a perfect professional, work his socks off. Not sure about Suso, but he's said he wants to stay and fight for a spot.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Also to add, this year we 'll be playing a poor Bulgarian side in CL, & in FA or League Cup, if we goo till far end,, that's another 12-14 matches. We are looking for a potential 65+ matches season & all 3 of our strikers (DS, MB & RL) are regulars for their National side (though Ballo missed the friendly call, but I am sure he is part of Conte's EURO qualifier plan), which means another 8 to 10 matches for them & lots, lots of air mile.

Now that Borini is at LFC, I think we'll see him in action, regularly. In fact, I don't think he is that fool to ask for a 90K/week, when he had the offer of 58K/week (still crazy money) & almost certainly regular game time, if not start in EPL. May be he is planning to return to Italy - after a year as fringe player at LFC, I am sure he can return back to Seria A, may be even at Roma again.

But that's only if they all adapt, Falcao's knee is ok, and they don't get any injuries.
One or two top players out and it all could cntinue to go Pete Tong. Fingers crossed...

    ReplyDelete
  96. It's really quit simple. If a manager wants the player they will pass the medical. If a manager doesn't want the player, then an easy way out us to fail the medical. In the end he was not a player BR wanted, if he was Liverpool would have signed him.

    ReplyDelete
  97. He had well documented problems before this and maybe Rodgers didn't like his attitude when he met him in America and thought he wouldn't fit into our style of play. Rodgers does always say he looks for a certain type of character and maybe Remy isn't the type of character to be successful here.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Loan deals can be an excellent option for the progress of a player, particularly when it comes to adapting to a new style of football. By not featuring in the first team, Coates and Ilori are not automatically bad players or flops, that is much to simplistic and inaccurate a term for promising young players who may or may not possess the capability of providing decent competition for the centre back positions in the near future.

    ReplyDelete
  99. apparently he's going to play for LFC reserves ;)

    ReplyDelete
  100. I think Wellbeck will notch for Arsenal. Agreed he has pace but he does have some technique he will be presented with better opportunities with the way the gunners play in my opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Unfortunately, that image of Chelsea is one that is held by rival supporters. To the rest of the world they are a rich and successful modern football powerhouse with a strong history in England's top division. Just like Man City and even Utd to an extent, the history doesn't matter, it's the here and now that counts and how much money these clubs have to sign "name" players.
Don't get me wrong, I'm Liverpool 'till I die so much it hurts, but I'm also a realist. Besides, we're back on track now so don't care what other clubs do.

    ReplyDelete
  102. That is a ridiculous amount of money. Utd just throwing money at the problem. It's a testament to BR who didn't spend a lot to get us into a CL position.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Very true... I will be interested to see how Falcao reacts to the PL pace. Di Maria went off with cramp on his first game against Burnley.... BRs philosophy is rooted in having technically sound hungry young players with a mixture of experience... Utd not so much....

    ReplyDelete
  104. Very true. Let's hope they don't adapt.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Or he just failed the medical

    ReplyDelete
  106. Yeah, you're right. I can just see him now thriving on the incisive service from the flanks from Young and Valencia! Seriously though, Utd have some good players, always have had so it's no big deal. Liverpool are looking up rather than down and the teams we should be looking to emulate and surpass in on pitch achievements now, are Chelsea and City. Utd and Arsenal will battle for 4th spot thanks to Wenger's ridiculous inability to strengthen his squad properly. Giroud and Welbeck - every time I say it it just makes me laugh! There is a small part of me that does think Welbeck might develop into something but he'll never be a Studge!! YNWA

    ReplyDelete
  107. Let's hope the threat of relegation for a coupleof clubs and Borini getting bored on the bench & training with the kids combine to force a move in January

    ReplyDelete
  108. After the international break we have 7 games in 3 week. Few easy games there too so Lucas can substitute Gerrard as the lone defensive midfielder. He's still okay for that role and I'm glad he stays as long as we haven't got a better option.

  109. Hey Twistadee, love your passion and youve really put alot of thought into your post, but can you just call them by their last names or a funny nickname? Seeing 'C Tiote (28)' over and over again is headache stuff! Still, very interesting look at the transfer dealings dude, Reus would be awesome, shame it couldnt happen

  110. It's only half because you pay 50% tax no?

  111. The teams ahead of us roster strength and depth are Chelsea and Manc City and they have 4 strikers. We should too. The notion that we could only have Balo OR Remy is silly IMO given the schedule demands headed our way. The was a 'real' reason but I don't think it was an either / or choice between Balo or Remy.

I am disappointed we didn't move Johnson and Borini although the latter's wage demands costs two deals. I am however relieved Suso didn't leave.....

  112. Lucas should has been on loan or sold also. But no clubs are after him.

  113. I'm no doctor but sometimes there may be an indication of something that may become an issue which is enough for one club to pull the plug and another club will take the risk. I doubt we discovered something really serious that Chelsea then completely ignore but you can take Ferguson's comments on Henderson as an example. Apparently they dropped any interest because of the way he moves because they expect an issue at a certain age whereas we say it's rubbish and there is no issue.

  114. Its true especially that you say "at the moment". For me the hype is in this talk about him NOW as if he has ALREADY beaten defenses all systems out and scored 25-30 goals. I think its still too early for people to hype him up like that NOW. I fear it may get to his head and affect him especially with the recent rumour of RMadrid's interest in him

    ReplyDelete
  115. Just like Wilshere, Zaha, Carroll and Chamberlain, they are young but aren't world beaters already, they have MASSIVELY HUGE potential to be so but they are just not yet there. A couple more consistent seasons, I will be the first to get back to you guys and say, look at these gems, they are good. But for now, I have yet bought the idea

  116. I agree with 99% of your script above and would make just one alteration - iin the 3rd para first sentence I would insert "seem" for "have been" but you may feel that is nit picking a very good reply to an OTT and unwelcoming post.
I say to Fabio Borini "I hope your decision is right for you and LFC. You were welcomed at Liverpool when you came and nothing has changed. I wish you every success."

  117. No one knows how he feels after suffering a fairly severe pre season injury. It could just be he may require more time to recuperate fully before being asked to start every match. Being 4th choice would give him that time.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Im more convinced with the view that the two teams' views over risk differ and that the explanation

    ReplyDelete
  119. LFC medics found banned substance in his blood and didn't want another Carroll at the club. Fits right in with Willian and Costa at Chelsea.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Cotes IS good enough for defense. he has not been given much airply. If he is not good enough then Ibe, Ilori,Suso and Lallana are ALL not good enough on the flimsical grounds that THEY HAVE NOT HAD THE OPPORTUNITY. I think its outright crazy to write off someone simply because they havent been afforded the chance to show their stuff

    ReplyDelete
  121. Flanno will come in ahead of Manquillo when he's fit, he's a LFC player who's still developing. He's improved massively since his debut and will hopefully continue to do so with the extra competition. Maybe he is mostly heart right now, but that's a great foundation.

  122. If the Remy deal had gone through, we wouldn't have signed Balotelli. I very much rate Remy, but he doesn't possess the same fear factor as Mario, which will go a long way to creating space for our other attacking players. There is also more to Balotelli's game.

    Lets look forward.

  123. I'm confident Rodgers can keep him grounded and anyway he still have 3-4 years left

    ReplyDelete
  124. in chelsea he wouldn't play anyway so he wont die or get injured. then they will sell him for 50m

    ReplyDelete
  125. Thanks Benj, As the Real Madrid Galacticos team in 2003 found out the hard way and five years ago Zinedine Zidane came out and said S Gerrard(29) at the time was the best in the world.

Zidane said. "If you don't have a player like Steven Gerrard, who is the engine room, it can affect the whole team.

"When we were winning league titles and European Cups at Real, I always said Claude Makelele was our most important player. There is no way myself, [Luis] Figo or Raúl would have been able to do what we did without Claude and the same goes for Liverpool and Gerrard five years ago. We need an athletic mobile tough tackling DM who will do all the dirty work and keep team ticking over.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Coates(24) is not good enough. If he was he would be playing for team now.

Llori(20) and Suso(20) will be given until they are 21-22 before B Rodgers makes serious decision on keeping them or shipping them out.

As over summer during pre season he was talking about Ibe(19) and being young player that he would loan out as he was young and he would improve and get his experience away and hopefully by the time he was 21 he would be ready for the first team and to show what he can do.

Lallana(26) was chased for most of the summer and is class quality addition that B Rodgers spent £25M on.

I would have prefered B Rodgers spending £15-£20M on I Rakitic(26) during summer, but Lallana(26) is a class quality player and will be do well for the club.

  127. The key thing is that Liverpool have never said he failed a medical.....the Liverpool Echo are not above making assumptions based on rumour and conjecture like most newspapers. Remy is a very good player but does no possess that x factor that Balotelli provides. The failure of the deal happened in America just after Milan arrived for the tournament......I think BR was just alerted to the possibility then and chose to go another way. Its not uncommon for clubs to disclose players failed medicals ....its happened to George Boyd and Ricardo Fuller in recent years so don't see why we would not disclose. That said it was made public then , and yet they both both were able to sign for other clubs who took a different view on the issues. I just think its more than a coincidence that BR started talking up Balotelli just as Remy. I believe negotiations were likely underway then and BR's comments to the contrary were just to prevent any Vultures from circling. As for the idea of having both of them.....sounds nice on paper but we are only going to use two strikers in certain games and when we do the two starters are nailed on so Remy would be a £90k per week odd man out ....we have Borini for that on about half the wage

    ReplyDelete
  128. I agree with you 100% on Rakitic but I feel people overlook the fact that Raheem was not yet 19 when he was being given LOADS of opportunities to play, find his own style and deal with his confidence issues IN THE LEAGUE, yet Ibe hasnt gotten any such chances and Coates hasnt gotten those chances. I think Coates played well in a few games that he got e.g. vs everton in the draw at goodison park in the (2012-13) season before the last one and vs chelsea you can see some vs chelsea highlights here

Im unconvinced that he is not "good enough" for us. I am sure if he gets game time he will display this like now via the sunderland loan this season. It appears to me BR just doesnt fancy the guy. And it is precisely this use of personal preferance over layer quality that makes BR stick to the likes of Allen

    ReplyDelete
  129. Why did we try to sign him in the first place if the manager didn't want him. Surely it would be a lot simpler for Brendan Rodgers to just say he doesn't want Remy to begin with. Unless of course you're trying to suggest the club set up the Remy deal against Rodgers wishes, and then Rodgers has to sabotage the deal by having a quiet word with the dr's doing his medical? But that is an absurd suggestion obviously.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Maybe Liverpool wont take the chance on anything happening should he play.He is less likely to suffer any medical issues sat on the bench at Chelsea

my thinking as well. br never stated that medical reasons were the cause of pulling out of the deal

  133. Top boss? Nah, there can only be one top boss and that's Brendan Rodgers. Maureen can do and say as he pleases. Finished behind Liverpool last season and I expect the same this. It was a pity the Remy deal didn't work out but in Ballotelli we've actually got a much better player anyway. You could call it luck, but Rodgers seems that type of manager...he's so good, things just fall into place for him. Ballotelli will outscore Remy 2 to 1 this season.
