LFC Madness: Why £6.2m salary for 'wonderful' £20m star is an absolute disgrace

"He’s turning into a beautiful young man". Urgh. Someone pass the sick bag. Brendan Rodgers' trademark propensity for gross overpraise is once again at maximum overdrive, and as usual 'wonderful' Liverpool attacker Raheem Sterling is being hyped out of all proportion. Worse than that, LFC are reportedly considering offering Sterling a new contract worth £120k a week (!), which, in my view, is just totally ridiculous.

Earlier this week, Rodgers compared Sterling to Lionel Messi, and now, it appears the Reds are considering a new contract offer, which will take the youngster into the Messi-esque big league of football salaries. The Liverpool Echo reports:

"Brendan Rodgers is keen to tie him [Sterling] down to a fresh deal as soon as possible [and] the England international will be offered wages of £120,000-a-week in order to keep him at Anfield".

First, I fully accept that this may just be paper talk, but if it's not...£120k a week? That equates to £6.2m a year, which is just sickening, and if Liverpool are seriously considering this, then it's an utter disgrace.

Why does Sterling deserve £120k a week? He's 19 (!), and has achieved next to *nothing* in the game. Yes, he's progressing well, but that is his job! He's supposed to incrementally improve, and he has every advantage at his beck and call to facilitate that improvement. LFC owes Sterling nothing at this stage, but he owes the club everything:

* He already earns big bucks, and only signed an improved contract 18 months ago.
* Liverpool plucked him from obscurity gave him the opportunity to play top-level football.
* Brendan Rodgers has consistently shown a great level of faith in Sterling.
* He is now a regular in the team, with the excitement of CL football on the horizon.
* Sterling made the England team as a result of his coaching and development at Anfield.

Liverpool deserve - and should demand - loyalty from Sterling, and the club should take the view that he should be happy with his current £30k a week contract. Why wouldn't he be? If he demands more money than that at the age of 19 then it is greed, pure and simple.

There's also a strong possibility that such a massive salary may dull his motivation/competitive edge. Where's the need for Sterling to push himself to the limit when he's earning almost £500k a month?! What happens in two years if his progression continues - offer him £300k a week to keep other clubs at bay?

It's absolutely ludicrous, and when clubs make decisions like this, it perpetuates the the pernicious trend of player-entitlement, and promotes a damaging culture of greed and rampant self-interest.

Sterling has the world at his feet at Liverpool; why would he want to leave all that behind at such a young age? Give him a pay-rise, by all means, but be reasonable about it. Sterling should be happy with £30k-£50k a week at his age, and if he's not, then that's a major problem.

If Real Madrid do come calling, and Sterling seriously considers a move at such a young age, then it will show that he has zero loyalty to Liverpool. In such circumstances, the club should just cash-in and get rid as the only possible reason Sterling would consider a move is (arguably) for the money.

As noted above, it may only be paper talk, but if Liverpool go ahead and give Sterling such an obscene pay-rise, then (IMO) it will be a slap in the face for the LFC fanbase. For me, one of the absurdities of football is the idea of thousands of working-class fans - many struggling to make ends meet - rabidly cheering-on grossly overpaid footballers who earn more in a week than many fans earn in a couple of years.

I don't see how the average fan on the street can be happy with the prospect of Liverpool paying Sterling £120k a week, especially since he's achieved absolutely nothing of note in the game. Still, that's modern football for you, and when ticket/shirt/merchandise prices rise to cover Sterling's ridiculous wages, I'm sure the same fans who lionise him (despite the potentially massive pay hike) will be foaming at the mouth over the injustice of it all.

  1. The amount of money in football nowadays is pretty sickening. If this is true, do you think it's Sterling wanting more, or the club trying to keep others away?
There needs to be some sort of wage cap brought in to football. How long is it going to be until £100 million transfers are the norm, and average players are getting paid 300k+ a week.

  2. working class fans cheer on mega rich footballers, just like how they listen to pop stars on the radio, and just like how they watch hollywood stars on film.

  3. Part of me says if they want to walk away, then let them. They clearly aren't in football for the right reasons.

  4. Seeing that Moreno has not been signed in time to play this weekend, Enrique or Johnson on Sunday? I can't believe I'm saying this (and I'm expecting rotten vegetation and a smattering of boos to be thrown and hissed [respectively] at me for doing so), but I would start Johnson on the left. I know he's been rather iffy lately, but he had a pretty good game against Dortmund last week.

  5. Agreed there not sure its Real sniffing around either but there is always those corrupt agents trying to fill their pockets at every turn.
The only advantage to any major wage rise will be a big buy out clause attached and that's it.

  7. I know right. So, they take a pay cut from 120 k to 70k. That is still more than what the common man earns in 10 years and with so much poverty in the world, these guys have no right to be demanding such high wages. When people say we do not get players because of wage demands, I am happy because wherever these guys go, they would get such lucrative wages that it does not matter where they go.

  8. I think you need to relax. I have a feeling it will be announce at some point today - tomorrow morning at the latest. Besides, how many times in the past have 2 potential signings failed a medical for one club within the same transfer window? I think the odds of that happening are pretty slim.

  9. Completely disagree with you here JK. Sterling is without doubt one of our most important players moving forward and with the rumours of Madrid eyeing him up it's in everyone's best interests to get him nailed down for the long term. Personally don't see Sterling moving abroad anytime soon if ever but better to be safe than sorry. Plus when you consider the wages people like Johnson etc are on he fully deserves it.

Have to say though BRs comments about him being a beautiful young man did make me wanna vom!!!

  10. You've made a moral issue out of an economic one.
In business matters, people don't get paid the wage they deserve, but the wage they can command. It makes sense for LFC to deter other clubs from their assets through higher wages - for me, £89-90k might've done it?? No teenager should be paid even £30k. It can ruin their character and aspirations, and is morally at odds with the rest of the world. But this is a football site, not an ethics one.

  11. Two wrongs do not make a right. GJ did not deserve those wages and neither does Sterling. Why would Real want a 19 year old when they have so many of them in their amazing academy and not to mention world class players at their disposal. How can we balk at Bony's demands and then readily give Sterling such a lucrative contract. He does not deserve it yet. He has not done anything no matter how good he is. He has very few goals, assists, has no CL experience and limited international experience. How is he suddenly on 120k?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Messi actually earns 3 times that amount.

Whether you think its a disgrace or not Sterling is now one of the most important players and biggest assets at Liverpool. He will now reap the rewards of being in such a position.

    why does age matter ?

it is all about what he offers now and ask anyone they will tell you he is our best player and most exciting now suarez has gone and liverpool should do all they can to keep him even if that means offering a lot of money

even our skint neighbors have given barkley a 60k a week deal , and everton are paupers compared to us

    ReplyDelete
  20. I actually don't see any fault with Sterling getting 120K. In-fact, LFC is doing it right by tying him for a high salary. Now, if the vultures come, they 'll not only have to offer much higher salary & transfer fee to LFC as well. At 50K level, any Tom, Dick or Harry could have taken him just (!!??) for 70K & 18mn. I guess, now the figure 'll start from 150K+ & 35mn+.

Is it justified? But Off course. He is 19, talented, fast & skill full, low centre of gravity with lot of stamina, can play for 2/3 positions - why not? Any Spanish, French or German kid with same profile 'll definitely get 40K to 60K contract for these qualities - so Starlingshould get 2/3 times more for his Passport. If Rooney can get 300K, Donkey Carroll 100K+, Terry at 35 170K or Gerard around 150K while Luck Shaw could be sold for 29mn to sit on bench (they are desperately trying for Rojo), then Starling should get close to 125K, because subject to health & card, he 'll start probably 35 League matches (Play all to 38) & remain on field full-time for most matches.

real are monitoring him in two seasons they will try and sign him

so it is up to us to get as much money as possible
if he has one year left on his contract lfc can only demand liek 30m if he has 3 seasons maybe they can demand 70m ,

so in the long run it saves more money

  24. I understand what you're saying but money, in my opinion, often leads these musician and actors down paths that eventually lead to their demise (whether through drugs, depression, etc). I don't have an attachment to them so while I shake my head and wish they would make better decisions I move on.
Livepool is my club..our club. It's a family club that strives to uphold the values of the club while protecting those who play for it. While we were willing to stand by LS through his psycological problems, in the same way, I think we need to stand by Raheem through this rise to super-stardom and keep him in check fo his sake. He already went off the rocker the last time we bumped up his pay (and I was against it for the same reasons); getting in trouble with the law, making little sterlings at age 18, and his game suffered and he was droppped from the team. BR has come a long way to get him back to where he is now and we can't afford to take 2 steps back. The most responsible thing we can do for the lad is not give him another ridiculous wage bump as I fear he might fall into that "celebrity" mire again and I'm not sure we'll be able to rehabilitate him this time around.

  37. That's not my point though. Everyone ignores how much actors and musicians get paid, yet every single new pay rise a player receives is under this scrutiny we're seeing right here. We need to realise that football is an entertainment business now, and it operates under the same economics as what show-biz operates under.

Sterling only has one little Sterling. And even if he does so, so what? Having kids when you are 18 is only seen as a problem because the vast amount of 18 year olds simply don't have the general resources to support the child. Most of them live in their own little bedroom in their parents' house, they don't have money, their parents find it difficult enough to support their original family let alone the new baby, and they also have school to worry about. Raheem has a pretty easy, rich life. He gets up every day and goes to training or to play a game, has a big nice house, and has a lot of money to support the child.

We could easily say a pay rise will make him complacent. But we could also say that it'll give him even more confidence in his own ability.

  70. It's an odd position for players to be in. On the one hand they should get their fair share of profits from the game. If the money doesn't go to the players then it goes to the league or the owners. On the other hand the more they get paid the more the fans themselves end up having to fork out. If players eased off the salaries a bit, wouldn't the clubs save money, maybe charge less to the fans? Maybe, or then maybe not. It depends on the club. I think in some ways a player would be foolish to believe that if he turned down a big salary it would translate into helping the fans. There is no guarantee. It's also not unreasonable for a player to consider what he personally brings to the club. Sterling is a growing asset and if he has a big season he'll be directly responsible for a large portion of Liverpool earnings. If he's helping bring in the money, why shouldn't he get a reasonable share?

It's also not the player's responsibility to set ticket prices or deal with club finances. The player has a worth in the market and they should aim to get a fair salary. "Fair" in this instance means compared to other players, so all those quoted figures always need to taken in perspective. Of course it's a lot of money but it's peanuts compared to what some players are earning at other clubs. It would naive for any player to think they can influence the way a club operates so really their main responsibility is to themselves. Not expecting a bigger salary out of some misguided sense of guilt doesn't make much sense. You wouldn't not ask for a pay rise in the company you work for because you care so much about your customers you want them to save a few pennies.

I wonder if maybe the league as a whole has a responsibility in this. The players association, the clubs and the league itself could get together and come to some arrangement, getting a larger scale agreement from players to accept reduced salaries so long as that translated directly into lower ticket prices and general savings for the fans. It would have to operate at that scale. One player or even one club on their own can't change the financial culture of a league and making single isolated decisions would achieve very little.

  73. Sterling has had one good half-season. That doesn't make him LFC's most important player. It's hype like this that's damaging.

Sterling has achieved nothing with LFC yet. Plus, he's only 19, and LFC's fate should now be resting in his hands.

And the idea that Bony will be a benchwarmer has no basis in reality. Bony and Sturridge can play in the same team, and there are plenty of games to go around.

Liverpool clearly need another striker, but using your logic, any striker that comes in will be a benchwarmer.

plus as jaimie said rodgers is only avoiding the question , so HA HA!
yeah that's right i doubled it

  97. Not always true. They took a long time to seal the Costa and Luis deals. Man City took a very long time to seal the Mangala deal. If negotiators are stern, it will always take time. We just have to be strong in the market and it could work out. Moreno we got for 12 mil when everyone was quoting 20 mil. Teams like Benifca and PL clubs are stern when they sell. We have to be sterner but we are learning.

  104. He certainly is, especially if Real Madrid come sniffing. Rooney is on £300k, which however much you may dislike it puts things in perspective,

  106. The amount of money is sickening and I agree it's a ridiculous amount for a teenager but you have to be realistic. It's competitive to the amount he could get elsewhere. This talk of demanding loyalty is a fallacy. If you worked for a company that had trained you but then you got to a certain level and another company offered you four times as much money would you accept it? Of course you would. Nobody would say you should stay through loyalty alone, the only reason you would stay would be if your current company were prepared to match that salary. The club is taking the initiative by making his salary competitive before he gets any offers that might turn his head. It makes sense if you want to keep top players you have to pay top wages, rightly or wrongly

    ReplyDelete
  107. This season whole Europe will be talking about him. And about one or two of our CB's. And about Gerrard. And about Coutinho, Lallana, Markovic, Coutinho and Sturridge.. People prepare yourselves for questions like- 'you've been watching him for how long? Have you always known he will be at THIS level?
And none of them will leave next season, that is the best part...

    ReplyDelete
  108. I don't understand why some of you are getting on Sterling's case?

You all act like Footballers are regular people, talking about what the average person earns. The amount of sacrificing these guys have to do to make it big is enormous and none of us regular people can understand that. While we are out partying or at home sleeping they are usually working hard to try and be one of the few people that get to grace the big stages. Are you going to pay £60 ever other week to go watch your local pub team that never trains, and buy their jersey for another £60? No way, because the quality of play is nowhere the level that the big boys play at.

This is their Job, and they work damn hard to get where they are. If the job was so easy (as you guys are making it out to be) everyone would be a footballer. I have no problem with Ballers making tons of money, and if the owners feel that they have one of the best players, they can offer him whatever they want. It would be a fool to turn down an improved contract - if your boss said to you you are my best worker and I am going to give you a raise, would you turn it down? I think not. If you won the lottery of £5mil would you say I am not going to take that money because it will ruin my life! I think not.

Some of you need to get off you baby ponies and realise that its not the players who have made salaries so high, but owners who are trying to win trophies that have caused this.

There is so much money in Football (TV contracts, worldwide kit sales, admission fees, sponsors, etc. etc.) nowadays and the reason is that us, the regular people, will continue to spend our hard earned money to support our favorite teams to the hilt.

To me Man Utd. paying Wayne Rooney £300 K per week is way more laughable than Sterling getting a £120 k per week. IMO Sterling performed way better than Rooney last season, and form wise is one our best players right now.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Twice I've sent it.. Maybe I should give you my email address here and than take from there?

    ReplyDelete
  110. I think the Echo just reported the new contract talks (all they knew) and other outlets talked figures that were just estimates of people wanted more publicity.

    ReplyDelete
  111. I wouldn't worry about it. It is very early days yet still. I am not sure they were proposed until recently.

    ReplyDelete
  112. If a team sits back start Bony. If a team wants to attack start Dani. Horses for courses and both can work in either situation.

I am coming around to the theory (no more than that) that we will sign Bony after he has played against United. I love the idea of Bony scoring against United for two different teams. We love a good narrative though us footy fans.

    ReplyDelete
  113. But it took him years to get there. Sterling's pace in salary increase is a bit of a warning(if allegations are true)

    ReplyDelete
  114. True, but I would have thought - especially after the World Cup and the world has seen what he can do - that around 100k would have been the minimum he and his people would have been looking at (and he would be worth it I think).

    ReplyDelete
  115. If we are to succeed this year Sterling will need to have a blinder IMO. So based on that I do believe he is one of our key players. I don't think putting pressure on Sterling will have a negative effect, quite the opposite, I feel he will rise to the occasion.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Sounds like either a mafia boss or a delicious pastry.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Arnold earned his 15m for Kindergarten Cop. Don't pretend he didn't!

    ReplyDelete
  118. I am against a young player earning that much but with the vultures like Madrid circling we may not have any choice but to make him one of our highest earners. At the moment Sterling is one of the most talented young attackers in football. He is only going to get better and we have to do what we can to keep him for as long as possible.

For another club to buy out his contract will make it a very expensive exercise when he is earning the wages that have been reported.

If Suarez was not our highest earner then Barcelona would have got him for less hence FSG renewing his contract in December 2013. There must have been the notion that Suarez was going to leave. FSG did not stand in his way this time round and financially the club has reaped the rewards of knowing exactly when to let go of a player.

If the £120k a week is true then here is hoping the money does not go to his head but should he want to leave and there are most definitely many clubs that will be willing to sign him, then we would have made sure that we get our asking price.

    ReplyDelete
  119. If anything i think it is to put a massive release clause on him similar to what we did with Suarez. Nowadays contracts mean next to nothing to big clubs.

    ReplyDelete
  120. With all due respect Jaimie, while I'm aware that "overhype" is a pet hate of yours, there's absolutely nothing to suggest that anything that's happening at the club is detrimental to our young players development. Certainly in the case of Sterling, his development has been nothing short of breathtaking

    ReplyDelete
  121. Personally I would say criticism is a hundred times worse. A player with too much confidence is never as bad as a player with non.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Is it not the contract meaning nothing to the player?

The first thing a buying club will look at is how many years the player they are interested in has left on his current contract as that will determine how much the player will eventually cost.

    ReplyDelete
  123. He only earned that much from the dance the running man which was adapted from the film of the same name. In original versions of the dance you would do it near a Christmas tree and pretend it was coming after you.

  124. And Rodgers says the overhaul of his squad was essential, insisting the club will not be making sweeping changes on this scale in seasons to come.

“We needed to develop the squad this year,” he said. “We had a sustained challenge last season in the Premier League where we had 12 or 13 players, so irrespective of the people that went out this summer we needed more depth.

“I’m really happy with the players we’ve brought in because that’s going to allow us to cope with injuries and cope with the competitions.

“And, as I said, if we can add one or two more in the areas that we want to then we’ll have had a great window and it will set us up not only for this window.

“We never brought anyone in in January so we needed to do that this summer, and this summer will probably be our biggest window for the next couple of years so we hope to get one or two more in.”

  131. My point is only that after his first pay rise all this stuff happened and, most importantly for us, his playing deteriorated. So much that a good amount of fans wanted him sold or sent somewhere else on loan after he was dropped. He still has 4 years left on a very good contract (especially for an 18 yr old). Why give him a mega contract and tempt fate again? He's come too far as both a man and a player in my opinion.
Also hasn't deserved that kind of a weekly check yet - if he scores 20-25 in all competitions and racks 10-15 assists and I'd stongly consider it next year

  133. After conceding 50 goal and rodger still stick with him through thick and thin now that's a interesting story, after all i don't think any liverpool keeper have done that before.

    ReplyDelete
  134. Considering that the club only paid 500k for him, seems like it would be a worthwhile investment, they get a high buyout clause put in, and he continues to perform at the same level or better, if he does get sold on he will have played for free - having his transfer cover all wages ever paid to him, plus some profit - not a bad piece of business.
If only there were a way to have the pay raise come out of Johsnon's wages.

    ReplyDelete
  135. That is the problem we have with Johnson. QPR is interested in him but what future value does he hold at the wages he commands?

There are younger and better goalkeepers out there than Reina at 100k a week. We had to bite the bullet at letting him go for peanuts but at least he is off our wage bill.

  140. Yes, I am. Sterling might have played well last season but his stats were still underwhelming with only 6-7 goals. He barely has 5-6 caps and has no CL experience. Bony is an experienced campaigner and single handedly carried a team to safety. I will give you an alternate example of Paul Pogba. He is one of the best, if not the best player in Juve and he is not a very high earner with less than 100,000 Euros per month. I want Sterling to be humble and when he has proven himself to be the BEST, he should be rewarded with the contract.

    ReplyDelete
  141. He's a great little player and just a bit special. Like it or not he will be a top top earner for many years. Would you rather all the money generated by football went to chairmen, directors or investors?

  144. B Rodgers and I Ayre need to Hijack the deal it has not been finalised we should offer £23-£28M and we would be able to bring M Reus(25) to the club.

How we have spent 20M on Markovic(20) and £25M on Lallana(26) who were not established or proven players in Europpe, but have not bid for M Reus(25) is comical and pathetic to say the least?

But B Rodgers will bid for J Rodriguez(25) Of Southampton and W Bony(25) Of Swansea shortly is absolutely ridiculous.

    ReplyDelete
  145. LFC normally take much longer than other clubs to confirm signings. Do not stress about it. Moreno is a done deal but will not play this weekend due to the paperwork not being registered in time as per James Pearce.

    ReplyDelete
  151. Exactly. In Gerrard's autobiography he mentions how cold Rafa was and said sometimes it's nice to have a manager slap you on the back and tell you you played well but under Rafa that apparently never happened. Unsurprisingly his success rate in bringing youngsters into the first team was fairly poor.
Brendan's worked with all youth levels on a daily basis for roughly 20 years. He knows what he's doing

    ReplyDelete
  152. This was my point too :-)

    ReplyDelete
  153. BR has refuted both these in his press conference. He didn't say RS was like Messi according to him or is he lying? He also said he wasn't aware of RS' pay rising to £120k pw?

    ReplyDelete
  154. I'm guessing 4th or 5th...

    ReplyDelete
  155. He did compare Sterling to Messi. Rodgers is being disingenuous on that point. He didn't direct compare ("sterling is like Messi"), he compared one aspect of their style of play.
As for the Sterling pay rise -he's hardly going to admit it in public. He said that Sterling 'will be taken care of'.

    ReplyDelete
  156. Although I agree with some of your sentiments, I have to disagree about how hard it is for them. If you only knew the real daily routine of a footballer!
One of the times when it is hard is after a big injury- they work their bits off to get fit again. But there are PLENTY worse jobs than a professional footballer even WITHOUT the mega bucks. Most people would swap places for their old salaries in a heartbeat.
That said, football brings in mega money- Billions- and the top players can expect their share of that as it is they that make it worth all that money to the TV and marketing companies

    ReplyDelete
  157. I prescribe anti depressants.

    ReplyDelete
  158. Hmmm. well I believe you're equally disingenuous describing Sterling's improvement as 'incremental'

    ReplyDelete
  159. How is that disingenuous? All players should aim to incrementally improve year - by year. You've clearly misinterpreted my point.

    Sent from Samsung Mobile

    ReplyDelete
  160. 'Yes he's progressing well, but that's his job! He's supposed to incrementally improve'
Gives the impression that Sterling's progress this past year has been incremental and was to be expected. No, you didn't say *Sterling's progress has been incremental* but that's the impression given from what you put.
Just like BR in your earlier point, and you yourself described it as disingenuous.
Sterling's progress was clearly far from incremental.

    ReplyDelete
  161. Johnson played very well at LB against Dortmund. He may have found his place on the left side though I don't understand why he plays better on the left than right.

    ReplyDelete
  162. Football Clubs and Owners make a lot of money everyone knows that. So you can't say that players don't deserve the money they earn. If Rodgers and the Club View that Sterling is worth 120k a week than no one should say anything about it.

The Club won't give sterling £6.2 Million a year if they don't believe he will make that money back and then some through Shirt sales and Performances. So I couldn't care in all honesty.

An example of this is James Rodriguez, Madrid bought him for around £60 Million within two days and 415,000 Shirts Sold they had recouped £20 Million imagine that over the next few seasons albeit to a less extent.

The same applies for Sterling if he stands to make the club £20 Million through his performances and Shirt Sales then by all means the club should pay him whatever it takes to keep him and still make absurd profits,

    ReplyDelete
  163. Just to point out most people with decent Jobs will earn 120k over 10 years I can't think of any "Decent Job" where a person would earn only 12k a year.

    ReplyDelete
  164. It's almost funny you know in almost all "Real life" Jobs if a person gets offered or has a chance to make four times more they currently are they would snap at the chance. Football is a business whether people like it or not players want to make money it's Human Nature to want the most you can.

    ReplyDelete
  165. I agree with JK I would have liked to see Reina fight for his place and I believe he would have usurped Mignolet. I can only assume a personality clash with BR has led to Reina being moved on.

    ReplyDelete
  166. Yes he played brilliantly against Dortmund and if he plays like that every week Moreno could be warming the bench. Hard to understand why Johnson plays so well on the left but rubbish on the right but it is a fact.

    ReplyDelete
  167. The point is you dont go to work and get paid for future potential you have to prove yourself he wont be getting 120k a week yet anyway so why botrher arguing.

    ReplyDelete
  168. I'm glad you agree with my point-of-view Stuart. Clearly, like Pepe, you're in the 'super-tax' bracket where the reduction of a mere £20K a week to show loyalty to your company is the overriding consideration! My meagre salary could not sustain such a cut but I show no jealousy to those like you who can. I would have loved Pepe to show BR (and the LFC supporters) his willingness to 'sacrifice' some of his burgeoning salary to continue performing at Anfield. But that's no longer an option. I hope the 'new' No2 keeper will demonstrate BR's wisdom in disposing of a tremendous keeper.

    ReplyDelete
  169. What would be the point of offering him £80-90K when RM or B will offer >£150K? Think you should ride pillion on Liverpool MD's bike when he sets out to clinch the next deal.

    ReplyDelete
  170. When you see a youngling like me say, for example, 'but Romeo though', or, 'but Reus though' (or tho), it means that name in subject is of quality.

    ReplyDelete
  171. I think Sterling has considerably matured since his last pay rise...

    ReplyDelete
  172. True, but Sterling brings in the hoes

    ReplyDelete
  173. That's a fair point when you are taking about people who live in the two world, the majority. But anyone who has a grasp on reality will accept there is a plateau for personal wealth. There is a point where you have enough to have a good life. At that point if you want more money then it's greedgreed and power, simple as. If you have financial security then you have the privilege of making choices based on your wish for your life. 30k per week on a contact he's got gives him financial security, at the age of 19!!

There is no need for Liverpool to be quadrupling his salary based on no real success for the club. I hope it is just paper talk. Let's be honest, if Real or Barca come along and say they want to sign him, then the salary won't be an issue for them, if they want him they will offer more. Liverpool should be offering him an improved contract as reward for a great season, but no more than 50k, but they should slap on a huge but out clause, that's the only way to keep those clubs away, not paying him 120k per week.

    ReplyDelete
  174. I think youngling speak should be banned just like text speak;-)

It seems strange to me that having agreed a wage for a set period of time you should then forgo that for your employer's benefit who still retains control of any transfer fee. Especially so when a replacement has been bought and your future at the club is in doubt to say nothing of your status.
    .

    ReplyDelete
  177. But the contract is to ward off interest from Real Madrid. We need to keep Sterling

    ReplyDelete
  178. ha ha Rodgers ripped you to pieces yesterday when he said he knows nothing about a new contract for Sterling .

    ReplyDelete
  179. money money money, that's all its about

    ReplyDelete
  180. I don't understand by what you mean by the right reasons? Playing Football is their job which they've dedicated their entire lives too, what's wrong with wanting to be payed what your value to the club is?

    ReplyDelete
  181. They have every right to demand they get payed. Why should they as a player be forced to take a paycut when the owners are taking in more than 100x that in revenue. If I was forced to take a paycut by a company instead of going to another one offering more I know exactly what I would do. Football is a Business now before anything else. There's no loyalty when there's money involved and while this may be classed as "greedy" by fans, if they were in a similar sitiuation 90% of the time they would take more money instead of accepting a near 50% pay cut. You brought up poverty as well but forgot to mention how much charity work the players themselves do as well as those who have their own charity foundations.

    ReplyDelete
  182. Good comments, what I should have said is that they work super hard to get to the top. Most give up their youth to become pros, they don't lead the life of a normal teen. A good example would be Messi, who left home at 13 and spent his teen years pretty much isolated.

    ReplyDelete
  183. Sterling is probably the best young player we have brought through the club in decades, of his ilk, he is in my eyes one of the top young players in the world, so for him, even at 19 to be on 20/30k a week is not enough. 120 is to much, maybe up it to 70, then a 10k increase over the course of a 5 year contract, hazard is on 140 at Chelsea at 22

    ReplyDelete
  184. What's ludicrous is offering Gerrard a two year extension and upping his wage to £150k. At this stage, HIS wages should be coming down.
As a musician, I kind of understand the players wages thing. It's a short career, which could end with the next bad tackle, so it's a case of 'making hay while the sun shines'.
Regarding what 'Average Joe' earns - 10 years on the dole will net you over £120k, a 'decent' job, not taking into account wage rises, will/should see you bank £250-300.
Getting back to the Sterling situation. It does make a mockery of the FSG/BR mantra about getting the wage bill down... Personally, I think this is a case of brace yourself for him going to Spain next summer, so they/we're getting the valuation up.

    ReplyDelete
  185. Yep and we can thank Rafa :-)

    ReplyDelete
  186. I'm sorry, and this applies to ALL walks of life, not just football players, but after a while:

    - do you really need that EXTRA £1m or more salary
    - how many posh cars that you rarely drive do you need parked in the garage
    - how many houses that you stay in less than 1-2 weeks in the year do you need to house you and your photogenic g/f
    - once you have bought a few of your favourite (name any other materialistic item), how many more do you need

I am sorry to say this ultimately comes down to greed, and keeping up with the millionaire Jones down the road. If they have one - I need to have 10. Completely pointless once you go beyond a certain point of financial security.

    ReplyDelete
  187. Personal disagreement maybe - personality never!
One thing I cannot understand is why players all seem to want to join RM? It has one hell of a size of a beach but no water! At least Liverpool is fairly close to Blackpool's 'golden mile'. :-)
