Swap Deal: BR to dump 'aggressive' £7m LFC star & sign Argentina World Cup 'weapon'

With Pepe Reina no longer at the club, Liverpool need some credible competition for Simon Mignolet, and the latest player linked with club is Argentina goalkeeping 'weapon' Sergio Romero. Despite his status as his nation's number one, he doesn't seem to be in demand, and is surplus to requirements at Sampdoria, which means it should be a comparatively easy transfer to pull off. To that end, Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is reportedly considering sacrificing one of his fringe players in a bid to seal the deal.

According to Italian journalist Tancredi Palmeri, Liverpool have put in an official offer for Romero.

€2m seems eminently affordable, but Sky Sports Italy claims that Rodgers will offer Sebastian Coates to Sampdoria in a straight swap deal.

Rodgers recently praised Coates for his pre-season performances, but hinted that a move may be on the cards. He told reporters:

"He [Coates] can play football. He has a lovely touch, lovely technique, can pass the ball and can be aggressive. The question for Sebastian will be whether he is going to get enough games that will satisfy his own personal need, because he's a talent"

Despite his impressive performances pre-season performances, it's obvious that Coates is a dead man walking at Anfield. With Lovren, Skrtel, Sakho, Toure, and Agger in the squad, there's absolutely no chance of the £7m defender making a breakthrough, so leaving is probably best for his development, and future career.

There may have been a slim chance of some game-time (probably in domestic cup competitions) if Kolo Toure's move to Trabzonspor materialised, but the Ivorian made it crystal clear this week that he's not going anywhere, so that's probably the final nail in Coates' Anfield coffin.

As always the question to ask is this: will losing Coates make any negative difference to Liverpool's forward progress? As harsh as it sounds, the answer is emphatically NO, and sacrificing him for much-needed back-up goalkeeper makes good transfer sense.

  1. Yep totally agree he's never gettin near the first team so no point hangin on to him and decent back up keeper is needed jones is dodgy

  2. Jamie I understand this is a story But on the Range of What we need Right now at LFC The keeper would be last worry.
Yesterdays game We were waiting Suarez to pull us out of S%$T.
World STRIKER needed and Dominating midfielder.
Gerrard and lucas cant be playing same time there was no link to Strikers
Sturridge was waiting for Suarez to show up .
Tadic who they bought on Cheap was better then our Midfield .
We have problem need to spend money on Pogba or Vidal and Cavanni or Falcao first

  3. Coates was bought to give Suarez a friend, in my mind

  4. i wish we would play 3 at the back. mignolet; manquillo, skrtel, lovren, sakho, moreno; henderson, gerrard/can, coutinho; sterling, sturridge. i really do think gerrard is an accident waiting to happen. he doesnt track the opposing attacking midfield player at all so we either need more stability with the extra cb or he needs to play higher up with someone like can as the holding player. the amount of times i saw him casually walking/jogging back when southampton were attacking was so frustrating. manquillo and moreno are also so attacking they would be better as wing backs. this all links into the article in that coates would then be closer to the first team. he is so much better than toure IMO anyway.

  5. I would have gone for one of the 2 best GKs in world. Put his release clause (close to 23-25mn, I guess) & offer Reina's salary, I am sure Lloris would have loved to join a groing team like LFC. We have the money, the team, the Manager & the CL football; Spurs have blown most of theirs money, has a confused team, 4th Manager in 3 years & no European football - this could have been the best year to return some compliments back to Levi.

GK is the safest position to invest big. In 2001, Juve spent insane money (29mn PS, I believe) for 23 years old Buffon & got arguably the best GK ever for 15 years. At 27, Lloris can be our GK solution for lest 10 years.

  6. with a full team i would suggest a 5-1-3-1. it may be unusual but so effective with the amount of players we have in certain positions. imagine mignolet; manquillo, skrtel, lovren, sakho, moreno; henderson; markovic, sterling, lallana (or coutinho for any of these 3); sturridge. basically its like 4-2-3-1 but instead of gerrard laboring in midfield we would have an extra cb and more impetus for the wing backs to provide the width.

  7. Romero is not a class goalie, he will be a bench warmer for us, so 2.000.000 euros is OK. But I cannot understand how we finally sell Reina for only 2.000.000 pounds. Rodgers doesn't sell, he is killing players for almost nothing. The same happen with Kelly and Coady this year and with Shelvey last year. And I have the feeling that if Suarez was playing for Man U, he could go to Barca for much more money... I'm afraid that we don't know how to sell our stock...

  8. Both Lucas and Allen are not suited to BR's tactics and are not first 11 starters. Courinho needs to take their role in midfield and have a second striker player alongside DS.

  9. The question is not whether Coates's departure will currently have any negative impact on Liverpool but whether his future presence will reap any benefits. It is clear that, as it stands, getting rid of Coates would have a zero negative effect as he is not playing. However, the attributes Coates has mean that he could be a decent player for the future. What is the point of blocking off one of the Central Defensive berths with Kolo Toure whose error strewn performances have been costly and who is not by any stretch of the imagination one for the future? Wouldn't it have been better to encourage Toure to accept the move and use the place thereby created to bring Coates in as 4th choice. Personally, I'm very sceptical of the idea that Coates will be used in a swap deal here. His market value is far greater than the 1.5-2 million that is being quoted for this keeper.

  11. The top teams are now buying up young players with potential so that they don't have to pay 20-30 million for them when they hit their peak. Llori has been bought with this in mind. He will be allowed o develop on loan and then come back stronger,

  13. thought Coutinho was quite poor today. Hefailed to control the ball, pass anywhere near as well as usual, and generally couldn't

  14. I'm sure many would consider Coates to be ahead of Toure and even Agger if he really wants to stay. I think recent comments (if true) will have made BR consider letting him go. It's really up to Coates whether he wants game time now, but he should give it a shot and perhaps get his chance in the next couple of seasons and be a regular of the future. Toure would be gone if the transfer had worked out, and he will certainly be let go at the end of the season. Agger certainly has no future and will go if someone makes a bid before the end of the window. I expect Arsenal to make a £1.00 bid at the last minute. That leaves Sakho and Coates as stand ins for the ideal first choice of Skrtel and Lovren.

Don't go Coates, give it a shot, you're still young enough to give it another couple of seasons. If we get injuries then who knows.

As for Romero, better than Jones for sure. Could do with someone better, but for 2m it's not a bad punt if there are no other workable options. Should bid for Cech, just for a laugh.

  15. I can't think of one team that was 'on' for the first match...with perhaps the exception of Swansea City. They went to Old T and beat ManU...that was almost as good a feeling as our win. Soton's performance shows Koeman is a good manager. He cobbled together a respectable team from the tatters of last season's team. Got his tactics right in knowing how important PC was to our lightning attack...and shut him down. Yes there were some ragged spots, but we won...still don't know why Glen Johnson is starting though.

  20. I did find it interesting that in his post-match interview BR said he needs to sign another striker. To my knowledge it was the first time he has said something other than we are still looking to sign 'a player or two.' To me it sounds like just a hint of desperation leaking in late in the window.

  21. Great deal. Need competition for Mignolet. Coates not really needed considering how many CBs we have. This could also make space for Alderweireld. Two birds with one stone.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Dude how the hell can you be disappointed with £75m? Especially after the player has been banned from playing for however long and is a ticking time bomb? Stop rollocking the manager and have some faith. We got very lucky that Barca needed a marquis signing and were willing to pay whatever. Rodgers is doing a great job with what he has, he is getting the best out of the players he has, I just wish he wouldnt pick Lucas or Johnson ever again. Kelly wasnt looking like he was ever getting back to his best after the big injuries, and Coady isnt ever going to make the grade as a great CM. Shelvey was good, but wasnt going to get the game time he wanted. I ask you, how would you have gone about this, especially with Reina, since you cant understand how we sold him for so little. How much can you get for a keeper who is well in his 30's, had a poor final season with us, had a poor season on loan and demands huge wages? The only way is to sell him low and be thankful you arent paying the salary anymore. Stop thinking you can do a better job than BR because you held out for £7.5m on FIFA 14. 'We' dont need to know how to sell our stock. BR does, thats all that matters.

  23. Agreeing with Jaimie on almost everything he says? These are
    strange times…

I have to agree with your assessments of Lucas and Johnson,
both of whom I would have raffled off by now. Anyone still clinging to the old
Lucas Fan Club Bandwagon from 2 seasons ago, “No he’s seriously the best DM in
England, he just needs to get over his injury”… UGH... He did NOTHING in the
game, whereas Johnson did heaps, but none of it was any good. Both defensively
and offensively, he is one of the worst PL Full Backs on current form. People
going nuts over our link with Bertrand must have seen that Bertrand looked the
better LB (Manquillo did a great job on him though).

Awesome start by Skrtel and Lovren, that is going to be a
great partnership. Manq looked assured, a bit less so as the game went on, but
definitely a decent start for a yound player in a new league. That
Lucas/Gerrard partnership should never be awakened again. I’d honestly prefer
Gerrard/Allen, at least that gives us some mobility. I’ll disagree with you
regarding Hendo though, I think his contribution went way beyond stats. There
were multiple times when I was watching the game yelling out “HENDOOOOOOO”,
because no one puts on that kind of pressure but him. His technique and passing
is always improving, as is his positional sense. Coutinho didn’t have a great
one, but not by fault of his own. To be honest I think anyone would have
struggled with the hatchet job that Fonte was doing on him and Raheem. Sterling
is growing in leaps and bounds, his 0-100 is staggering and he is just such an
intelligent player. Studge played ok, not great but not poor. Didn’t get the
kind of service he should have, because that midfield just couldn’t keep
    control.

Moving forward, I think Lucas needs to be dropped (cos we
know stevie wont be) for either Allen or Can, so that Stevie can actually do
his job as a QB. With Lucas there, he has no protection, but with a more
mobile, half decent midfielder next to him, he is free to dictate play and
    control the MF.

My god though, Stevie can still play a cross field ball like
    no other. Pin-Freaking-Point.

  25. Lets wait and see who else comes in but they definitely need another player to come into the midfield i am hoping Song he is quality.

    ReplyDelete
  26. We replace Lucas and Allen with midfield upgrades we will be tough to beat. We need speed, toughness and knack for offense when needed. They were useless today. Completely agree that Lovren and Manquillo were top shelf today. Mignolet does scare me a bit but still have faith he will get better especially if we get a better number two to push him a bit...

    ReplyDelete
  27. He is not a DM. Neither is Gerrards, and it shows.

    ReplyDelete
  28. If we get Romero for Coates that would be good business.......More dead wood needs to be trimmed for a big boy striker and a big boy midfielder to send Lucas and Allen to another league somewhere along with Toure and Agger............

sakho is a liability and an accident waiting to happen...mark my words. £ at the back doesn't work for us. Remember back to last season.....Sakho has the ability to play football similar to someone one on a special olympics team. Just because you can make a hard tackle now and again doesn't mean you deserve a place on the bench never mind the starting team. Our number one prority are strikers, one world class and one experienced 15-20 league goals a season. In order to challange for the title they are a must. Gerrard is the heartbeat of the team and to suggest he is an accident waiting to happen really shows the lack of knowledge you have about football. He is an essential cog in what will and should turn out to be a well oiled machine this season. His experience and presence in the team is legendary to opposing teams including the big guns in Europe. After last seasons suprising but outstanding preformance for me only a title will sufice. A lesser FA or league cup is a failure for this club given its history.

spot on and correct and given who Liverpool have bought this season and the youngsters they have in the squad it would suggest in 2-3 seasons they would have a team including a bench that even Real Madrid would be proud of. However As aLiverpool fan given last years near success and the 0 EPL titles I don't feel like waitng another 2,3,4 or more seasons for a long over due title

Rodgers good I agree this is his 3rd season its time for him to deliver. This season will show how good a manager he really is. Last seasons heartbreak was essential for both him and the team to gain experience in a title run in. Fingers crossed with much hope that this year both deliver the title

of course the no striker so far is a huge worry but I think that liverpool will end with 2 strikers and do not be suprised if Falco is one. The loan move for one season would be incredible and if we do go on to challange for the title and have a good run of champions league to a quarter final a permenant switch would be on the cards. Falco as everyone knows is lethal in front of goal and would suit us to the ground

  36. Been saying for many years, lucas is not good enough for liverpool fc. If its not his trademark needless freekicks then you are sure you can rely on his pub standard passing abilities. Some people kept on saying he's returning from injury and is not match fit and all....well i think that excuse has now been full utilised. No wonder brazilian football is up the creek right now.

Lucas please do the right thing and leave this month, before I break my tv .....enough is enough now!!

  44. Oluwatoyin Akanle8:39 am, August 18, 2014

I honestly believe something should be done to curb Sturridge's attitude to goal assist. He tends to believe he can wiggle through defenders at will and falls at every challenge near the 18. His finishing also leaves much to be desired as he does not have that one-touch (or Surez and now Sterling)

I believe he needs his ego checked and made to either feed more predatory strikers (which ever BR decides to buy)

    ReplyDelete
  45. Oluwatoyin Akanle8:43 am, August 18, 2014

I believe Shaqiri is a perfect replacement for Surez goal-hungry and very mobile. Willing to come back and assist the team

    ReplyDelete
  46. You see, here's the problem with relying on statistics as opposed to actually watching football. The MOTD highlights alone show Lucas making 2 successful tackles, one of which was a direct assist to an effort on goal from Sturridge.

    ReplyDelete
  47. The only thing that 'should be done' re Sturridge is to continue encouraging him. He is an amazing striker, and his goals/assist rate is on the same level as Messi and Ronaldo.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Indeed! Why would we want to make our top striker pass more....

    ReplyDelete
  49. Seeing as it was his first ever game in the Prem I think Manquillo did pretty well, and was arguably our best and most consistent player.
With him bombing forward like he did, sometimes he will be a little out of position that's why Lucas is there, to cover. Which he didn't do very well.
Tadic was a real handful, and I thought he coped with him well.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Soton didn't deserve 3 points. They barely had a shot in the first half. they played much better in the second, but not enough to warrant a win. A draw I think would've been a 'fair' result.
But you know what, they didn't win, and that's all that matters. They had chances and didn't convert them, it's there own fault.
I actually think we will have more of a balanced team without Suarez, yes we will miss his individual talent, but as a team Liverpool can be just as good.

    ReplyDelete
  51. he must have done something right if he is closely followed by 2-3 players as soon as he had the ball

    ReplyDelete
  52. It was good to see that we actually had a decent plan B too. As soon as Lambert came on, the game changed.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I'm awaiting an article on Skrtlrl dropping off. You know for continuity.

    ReplyDelete
  54. The guy has scored more goals in his first 50 games (36 goals) for Liverpool then any other striker in our history

Like Jamie has said, all that needs to be done is to encourage him to continue like he is doing

    ReplyDelete
  55. What no place for Glen Johnson??? :-)

    ReplyDelete
  56. IMO, this is what Liverpool will still do in an ideal scenario:
Bring in a striker (My mate who used to work at Liverpool is hearing whispers of Higuain)
A DM- Song seems the most realistic choice at the moment
Another wide player on top of the Markovic signing- Lavezzi
    A goalkeeper- Romero, perhaps?

In an extremely ideal situation, we'd also bring in Samuel Eto'o and sell Borini. Higuain, Sturridge, Lambert and Eto'o. Wolah.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Well, you can take Agger (likely to leave, and hopelessly injury prone) and Toure (utterly useless) out of your list, so Coates is actually third or fourth choice. Do you not think we need back up / ability to rotate in the centre of defence?

    ReplyDelete
  58. Just like Remy, the key word is INSURANCE ... pay the expensive policy ..

    ReplyDelete
  59. What did you think of his ego when he sealed the 3 points? Long may his ego, sorry I meant self confidence continue! Critiques on Sturridge's attitude become more ridiculous everyday.

    ReplyDelete
  60. He is NOT the ball winner see need. We struggled got regain possession all game .. Chelsea have 2 and City have 2 ..

    ReplyDelete
  61. how many people said the same thing about carragher and his influence on the team. you never truly know things will turn out until they actually happen. we acheived a great season without the "legendary", "influencial" carragher so why should we not have the ability to do well without gerrard. can already looks like he could do a job, and i didnt say gerrard should never play but he certainly doesnt have to start every game, and when he does he needs more help as he cant handle it in there on his own any more

    ReplyDelete
  62. Funny how no one seems to have commented on how little change we got out of the supposedly terrible Bertrand. He played well and to me at least, showed that he would of been a good option for us at LB and will go on to prove that Mourinho was right to deny his transfer to LFC.
I hope Moreno goes on to be a star for years to come though.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I would love to know what percentage of these predictions on this website come true. I reckon 1% just by fluke.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I would rather offload Agger and Toure and keep Coates. Surely comparatively low wages than the former two, and I really can't see what Agger or Toure offer that Coates doesn't, other than experience. Lovren, Skrtel, Sakho and Coates is adequate cover, for me. Though, if there are no takers for Agger/Toure, I can see the sense in a swap for Coates, but we will still have the unnecessary wages to pay the other two.

    ReplyDelete
  65. 36 goals in 50 games says you're talking rubbish. He's a goalscorer and as such, most of the best are single minded in their pursuit of goals. Shearer, Henry, Batistuta etc

    ReplyDelete
  66. Oluwatoyin Akanle12:35 pm, August 18, 2014

How many assists? I am not questioning his goal scoring, i am questioning his ability to allow others score

    ReplyDelete
  67. resurrecting lev yashin and signing him up is more realistic than getting courtois.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I wish I felt it had something to do with Lambert personally. However, the change to two strikers was the key. We should play two strikers more than not. two guys up front spreads the defenders and opens space. The single striker ends up being a target man no matter how he plays. He's too easy to cover.

    ReplyDelete
  69. But we don't need to buy anybody to replace them. We already have the guys in Can Lallana, Markovic and Suso.

    ReplyDelete
  70. It may have had a similar impact if it was someone else. But it was just good that we had a different option. He did also win the ball back just before the goal was scored. So that's something.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I am with you there. Falcao costing £22m on loan is extremely bad business especially when we know he is holding out for Real so we will be a one year stop over for him. If it was to cost at least £10m less then it would be a good deal because he would play very well to keep Real interested. Bony would like cost £17m more over 4 years if he is signed at '£19m buyout clause' earning £100k/week.. This is all hypothetical of cause.

    ReplyDelete
  72. i just read that qpr may tempt us with a 7 million bid for johnson. 7,000,000 pounds !!!

    ReplyDelete
  73. His job is not to assist, it is to score. If he ended the season with 10 goals and 20 assists he would rightly be viewed as having had an average season for a striker. Those are attacking midfielder stats, not those of a top striker, especially one who plays upfront alone.

    ReplyDelete
