'Out of this world': LFC hero urges BR to sign 'stunning' €63m star. Offer made, but is it possible?

Recent reports suggest that Liverpool are favourites to sign Paris St. Germain striker Edinson Cavani, and according to Anfield legend Steve Nicol, the 'stunning' Uruguayan star is the perfect summer signing.

Last week, Sky Sports claimed:

"Liverpool continue to head Samuel Eto'o's next club betting, having leapfrogged QPR in the market yesterday. The Reds also head the market on Edinson Cavani's next club"

Multiple sources have reported LFC's alleged interest in Cavani, and the striker's agent, Claudio Annellucci, has also confirmed Liverpool's interest. In a recent interview with Uruguayan newspaper El Telegrafo, he noted:

"Cavani heard proposals from Liverpool and Arsenal. He would love to play in England, but has not made a final decision. He's not interested in money and fame; he just wants to be happy playing football."

When asked over the weekend about Liverpool's transfer business, Nicol told TalkSport:

"[Edinson] Cavani would be out of this world, but I don't see it happening, and I don't see Liverpool spending £60m on somebody. With Origi coming in next year, I don't think Sturridge, Origi, and Cavani will fit"

Nicol is probably right about Liverpool's reluctance to pay a record transfer fee, but I have to disagree with the contention that Cavani, Sturridge, and Origi will not be a good fit for the club. It's important to have strikers of varying age/experience levels at the club, and if Cavani signed, he'd fit snugly into the pecking order:

* Sturridge: 24 - LFC's undisputed no. 1 striker right now, but no real competition for his place.

* Cavani: 27 - Older, more experienced, and entering the prime of his career. Capable of challenging Sturridge for number one status, but can also play out wide. Plus, can easily slot into a central role when Sturridge inevitably gets injured.

* Origi: 20 - Young, hungry, and will (in all probability) be happy to be third in line behind Sturridge and Cavani. Doesn't have the stature or the experience to demand/expect anything else.

* Lambert: 32 - A squad player, and won't expect to play every game.

Liverpool played two up-front plenty of times last season, so there's also scope for Cavani and Sturridge to play together. Plus, as seen during the World Cup, the Uruguayan - who cost PSG €63m - is also capable of being the creator just behind a central striker.

Liverpool are currently 11/10 favourites to sign Cavani (with Man Utd 2nd favourites), and Reds fans are definitely in favour of the move. A few days ago, I conducted a poll asking whether LFC should sign Falcao or Cavani:

* 15400 fans (approx) voted (the poll is still ongoing)
* 62% of participants chose Cavani.

  3. Best signing we can make right now is an excellent defensive coach, because however you dress up our first game, the defending was at times really poor. Southampton got at our back 4 far too easily, usually with one pass that splits midfield and defensive line. They got in behind the defence too often too. We will get found out if this doesn't get rectified .

  4. Cavani would be a great acquisition, but not at £60M. He's not nearly as good as Suarez and I would say £40M should be tops. I'd rather we spend £20M on Bony, who can give us more years and save the rest for winter transfer window, if we can't get Cavani for £40M. That doesn't take into account the not insignificant wage implication.

  5. You know...us Uruguayans are accused of having a complex about Argentina and using being small as an excuse not to be better or have a better in country infrastructure/domestic league because of it.... BUT i mean come on..... By now people do not know Cavani is from Uruguay?

Cavani will work hard for you, even on defense ...as he does with NT....who has Luis as the main guy and forces Cavani to do the dirty work.

  6. Eto'o for a season makes sense, as next season Origi comes in, people will whine but Eto'o scores goals in bucket loads if served-up enough chances!!!

    ReplyDelete
  7. With ibrahimovic injured i don't think PSG would allow a forward to leave, they'd be short a quality forward if they do.

  8. Lavezzi or Eto'o are realistic!!!

  11. Cavani has a bigmouth and is not worth 30 million euro

  12. If we're actually looking to get either Falcao or Cavani, I would prefer if we did a loan deal with an option to buy . Both are arguably overpriced and could end up as flops when forced to play against quicker and more physical defenders. Would rather take a more catious approach

  16. yeah, because west brom had such a good record defensively....

  17. Because after last season it's the only thing they can still go on about..

    ReplyDelete
  18. I wouldn't spend that kind if money on Cavani. Having said that, we really do need a striker or I think we will struggle. By the way Chelsea look brilliant.

i think sterling can play a free role like cristiano ronaldo play anywhere he wants
    ............................bony
    sterling..............coutinho...........sturridge

sturridge normally goes deep , right ,left

    ReplyDelete
  28. Square peg in a round hole. What use is Sturridge in this formation?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Nevergonnacrackthecode8:48 pm, August 18, 2014

he can play same role as suarez last season

he has the ability to adapt

    ReplyDelete
  30. We are not going to sign Bony to accommodate Sturridge. I will be proven right.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Nevergonnacrackthecode8:51 pm, August 18, 2014

so how is falcao different to bony
he loves playing main man as well

    ReplyDelete
  32. Bony wishes he was as good as Falcao. Are you listening to yourself

    ReplyDelete
  33. Nevergonnacrackthecode8:55 pm, August 18, 2014

    not about quality but role

    ReplyDelete
  34. What are you on about? How is Bony going to keep Sturridsge on the bench?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yeah, right, we don't need someone who wants to come, who is quite young, who can score 20+ goals, who can actually hold the ball up, and who is BRILLIANT in his own box on set plays.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Nevergonnacrackthecode9:00 pm, August 18, 2014

the game against southamton showed we clearly need two strikers ,

    ReplyDelete
  37. When you have to rely on Olsson and Lugano as you're first choice pairing and still manage to finish 8th in 2013 I think he can be trusted. In 2014 they only let in more than 2 goals in a game 5 times before May which is impressive considering they had no threat up front and often were defending for most of their matches.
Plus its not a secret that our air tight defense of old was down to Clarke. He knows the club, has some pretty good defenders to work with, he's done it before, don't see why this would be a bad move

    ReplyDelete
  38. We do not need Bony when we have Lambert.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Nevergonnacrackthecode9:03 pm, August 18, 2014

better option then falcao and cavani

cavani- will cost 3 times as more , has high wage demands so will upset the balance , plus he is 27

falcao- his head is not in the right place , he is about 30 (apparently he is not as young as he says he is ), high wage demands and wants to eb a rela player

    ReplyDelete
  40. Nevergonnacrackthecode9:04 pm, August 18, 2014

lambert is old only a season left in him
plus he is weaker then bony and not as potent

    ReplyDelete
  41. Bony is no quicker than Lambert. Trust me, £20 million plus will be an utter waste of money for someone who will be playing second fiddle to Sturridge.

    ReplyDelete
  42. There aren't good choices left but that doesn't mean we should pay £50m for Cavani or Falcao.

I'd rather keep Borini or hell get even something like Eto'o for loan if he is willing to lower his wage demands.

You see Chelsea is playing great football atm. And I'd say their three strikers are worse than ours atm. I feel Costa will be good but Sturridge is already one of the best strikers in PL. I take Lambert over Drogba any day and Borini ain't much worse than present Torres.

Chelsea is seen as favourite to be champion 2014/2015 and that's because their defence is great and midfield balanced. And that's something we have to get right too. Moreno, Manquillo and Lovren mean we are going to right direction but we have still lot to do. Gerrard ain't getting younger and present Lucas ain't good enough. He's someone nice to have in bench but not in best 11.

I think we already have team which can score enough goals, something like 70-80. And iirc 74 has always been enough for CL qualification. What we need is balance. We can't always buy the best strikers for crazy amounts just to score 90 goals to win games.

If we don't get new striker I'm a bit dissapointed. But I also understand there weren't many great choices. And I rather wait for January than panic now and buy something we would regret later.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Change the record already. As already proven, your view on this is not backed by anything approaching credible evidence.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Nevergonnacrackthecode9:07 pm, August 18, 2014

    it is not about quickness
giroud is not fast either nor is mandzukic

it is about the brain and bony is better tehn lambert in that aspect

    ReplyDelete
  45. Nevergonnacrackthecode9:08 pm, August 18, 2014

he thinks because they both are powerful man
and slow that they both must be similar

    ReplyDelete
  46. And I also want to add if there one player I would be willing to pay something like £50m that would Reus. But don't see that happening either so don't see a really reason speculate about it.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Yes yes yes. £4 million second fiddle player compared top one who costs more than 4 times the price. Your guess is as good as mine.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I can see no negatives. 3 world cup games, 2 goals ... the guy SCORES GOALS

    ReplyDelete
  49. Nevergonnacrackthecode9:10 pm, August 18, 2014

exactly cavani and falcao can be epic failures

there is something called a bad signing like borini
but because of the money carroll is a worse signing

    rather bony 19m at most

    ReplyDelete
  50. They buy experience, Buck fears experience ..

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete

    look at with neymar ,

    ReplyDelete
  56. Nevergonnacrackthecode9:14 pm, August 18, 2014

what is ayre meant to do?

say we want 75m or else

barca will tap up all summer until the end
they might activate his release clause
liverpool will get the money and all our targets will have ended up elsewhere or we would pay more , a true doing a spurs

ayre has not made a mistake , 11m is not a lot we spent 8 on iloris and have loaned him out a lot

    ReplyDelete
  57. They got £50M for Luiz, they've spent buttons so far ..

    ReplyDelete
  58. Nevergonnacrackthecode9:18 pm, August 18, 2014

    spurs say 86m

  62. People come on......Chelsea is playing a team that is just not ready from prime time.
Costa is good and as an AM fan....I am happy for him but he is and can be a hothead as well.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Are you serious?

    ReplyDelete
  64. We need a mobile tough tackling DM as L Leiva(27) and S Gerrard(34) do not have the energy, legs, mobility, pace or physicality needed to protect back four well enough.
A Mascherano or Momo Sissoko type DM is badly needed:
E Capoue(26) Of Tottenham for £6-£9M should be brought to the club not A Song(26) Of Barcelona.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Nevergonnacrackthecode9:24 pm, August 18, 2014

suarez is similar to sanchez in how they play but quality is different that is why barca signed him

bony would start most games lambert is just an impact player

    ReplyDelete
  66. Costa has actually only had one good moment which was his goal. Burnley are going to struggle this season.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Nevergonnacrackthecode9:25 pm, August 18, 2014

why capoue he is a spurs reject ?

mobility is needed but why are your ambitions so low ?

    ReplyDelete
  68. I'm fine with schneiderlin though I think it means rodgers should bench gerrard then.

actually gerrard should be benched more often anyways but because he's our best dmf (lame I know) he has to play too big minutes for 34 year old.

it's same as with lampard. doesn't mean gerrard won't have anything to give our team anymore. just means he struggles a bit too much against certain opponents.

and yes i would take bony too because he would cost only £5m to upgrade from borini. bony ain't the best match for our team but would be good enough 2nd striker with as many great attacking midfielders as we have.

    ReplyDelete
  69. B Rodgers should forget wasting £50-£60M on either Cavani(27) Or Falcao(28) he should spend £47on these two players:
    1: M Reus(25) Of B Dortmund for £23-£28M RW / LW / RWF / LWF
    2: W Bony(25) Of Swansea for £16-18M FD

    ReplyDelete
  70. Bony would start most games? At who' s expensense? Sterling?

    ReplyDelete
  71. Would rather buy lavezzi for 20 than loan Falcao for one season for the same amount

    ReplyDelete
  72. Nevergonnacrackthecode9:37 pm, August 18, 2014

lavezzi is not a proper goalscorer
he is playing in an easy league but his record looks pretty poor
especially for someone 29 years old

    reus or bony

    ReplyDelete
  73. Nevergonnacrackthecode9:38 pm, August 18, 2014

thoose things are taken into consideration when signing a player

    ReplyDelete
  74. We're not gonna sign Falcao either. Gotta agree with Logan on this one

    ReplyDelete
  75. true but like i wrote earlier here if there are only bad choices left rather not choose anything then and forget the whole thing. if lavezzi would be few years younger i could see that happening but paying 20m for someone who hasn't even scored 10 ever in one season would just be silly

    ReplyDelete
  76. Nevergonnacrackthecode9:39 pm, August 18, 2014

    look at beckham
at the time 30m was a lot

but because of his marketing value real made ten times as more

    ReplyDelete
  77. Only one problem with Lavezzi. He DOES NOT SCORE GOALS.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I agree. I was saying on here the other day that I would rather go with Sturridge, Borini and lambert til January than spend a fortune on a panic buy

    ReplyDelete
  79. cool then we are thinking the same way

    ReplyDelete
  80. He will struggle to get a game ...

    ReplyDelete
  81. Nevergonnacrackthecode9:48 pm, August 18, 2014

    just saw drogba
in a way i missed him
always nice to see a legend come back same with henry

maybe one day suarez will come back

    ReplyDelete
  82. Pipe would be a dream signing, but his wages make me worry that it'd just be money down the drain.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Suarez will probably be in the big house by the time he is in his mid 30s. That or the nut house.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Will you upload a video of you eating said words?

    ReplyDelete
  85. Nevergonnacrackthecode9:51 pm, August 18, 2014

    fernando torres

    ReplyDelete
  86. well that's the thing when you have one of the best strikers in pl. cavani could be the world most expensive 2nd striker if we get him :D

rodgers do it show them class always wins

    ReplyDelete

  106. Nevergonnacrackthecode10:15 pm, August 18, 2014

that player should get a 4 month ban like suarez

  108. I personally think Brandao's one is far worse. He also broke one of van der Wiel's vertebrae.

  111. Easy now, guv'. We don't want lifetime bans for someone going down a bit easily.

  112. Because it's us and it's him. ReplyDelete
  113. Nevergonnacrackthecode10:19 pm, August 18, 2014

    ReplyDelete
  114. Depends on the context of course. I have been accused of going down easily.......

    ReplyDelete
  115. Nevergonnacrackthecode10:20 pm, August 18, 2014

still i dont ever remember us singing about a utd player

    say liek gary nevile

    ReplyDelete
  116. I think that is the difference. It would have been like singing about John Terry slipping in the Champions League final at the start of the next season.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Trouble is when everyone is laughing at something you remember doing yourself

    ReplyDelete
  118. No it wasn't pre-meditated. It was Duncan Ferguson-esque. Just a rush of blood

    ReplyDelete
  119. Alright Florence Nightingale calm down, my comment was meant in jest, don't get your thong twisted.
Out of interest, how do you know Aspas is a good person? Been for a pint recently?

    ReplyDelete
  120. Dude he wasn't even bleeding. He was not "randomly attacked" he was headbutted during a heated exchange with a player. Could have died? Come on man

    ReplyDelete
  121. In that case, it isn't good but I'd say it is nothing more than an incident. He deserves a ban, he'll get one and we can move on.

The Brandao one is more serious though and I don't like to make a big deal of these talking points (in whatever form they take) but Brandao's behaviour is literally an assault.

    ReplyDelete
  122. So let's say Liverpool don't buy or loan another striker and Sturridge gets injured for 2-4 months. Then top 4 for Liverpool would be long gone. But I don't know if Liverpool should buy a 'big' striker who would want to play more or less every match, who would BR sacrifice, Sterling ? Lallana ?

    ReplyDelete
  123. Well exactly, between Lallana, Sterling, Markovic, coutinho, Borini and Lambert, surely they can chip in with enough goals to keep us in top 4 contention until January. And that's just on the assumption that Sturridge will get injured

    ReplyDelete
  124. Absolutely, he was waiting for him in the tunnel with malicious intent. That one was pre-meditated and I'll be very surprised if he isn't charged with assault. His ban will dwarf Suarez's i would imagine

    ReplyDelete
  125. ...That's just crazy. Signing an over-priced quality player is a lot different to signing an over-priced half season wonder.

    ReplyDelete
  126. From what I seen of Cavani in Brazil I don't think he would even be classed as a 'quality player', not for 60 million anyways.

    ReplyDelete
