Top Target: BR fighting to sign 'unplayable' £19m star who's desperate for LFC move

With only a week until the new season begins, Liverpool fans continue to dream of players like Marco Reus, Falcao, and Edinson Cavani, but deep down, most fans probably realise that the club has no chance of signing such elite players. At this stage, the most realistic striker option is Swansea City goalscorer Wilfried Bony, and it appears that the Ivorian is at the top of Brendan Rodgers' transfer wish-list.

According to The Mirror today:

* Bony is Rodgers' top transfer target, and LFC's boss is pushing hard for the signing.

* BR is happy to meet Swansea's £19m valuation, a fee that is enshrined in Bony's contract.

* Bony is keen to sign for Liverpool, whilst another source recently claimed he's 'desperate' to join the Reds.

Liverpool have been linked with Bony for the last couple of months, and in July Sky Sports claimed:

"Liverpool are in advanced talks with Swansea over a move for Wilfried Bony [who is] keen on a move to Anfield. Bony's agent is believed to be in talks with Liverpool as they aim to close a deal for the player".

When asked about the alleged talks, Swansea Chairman Huw Jenkins denied any knowledge of negotiations, and basically accused Liverpool of an illegal approach for Bony. He told reporters:

"I surprised and disappointed to hear that Liverpool were talking to the player behind behind my club's back. I'm disappointed [LFC] are acting in that manner. No official approach has been made"

There's a discernible level of antipathy from Reds fans toward the signing of Bony, but, in my view, there are number of positives to consider:

* First and foremost, 'unplayable' Bony's stats for Swansea in his first season are excellent:

- Overall: 27 goals/6 assists in 50 apps.
- Goal/Assist every 1.5 games.
- League only: 16 goals/4 assists in 27 starts.
- Goal/assist every 1.3 starts.

* The Ivorian has basically carried on where he left off in 2012-13, when he proved himself to be a goal-machine for Vitesse Arnhem:

- 31 goals/8 assists in 30 league games.
- Goal every 85 minutes.
- Goal/Assist every 67 minutes.

* No settling-in time required. Should be able to hit the ground running.
* Should score more at LFC as he'll be playing with better players.

* According to Swansea boss Gary Monk: "He [Bony] is a proper professional. He's not the sort of player to take it easy. Every single day he pushes himself and everyone around him. The more players like that you have in your squad, the better you're going to be."

Bony sounds similar Luis Suarez in his approach to the game: constantly pushing for the best, and always demanding 110% effort and commitment. Additionally, like Suarez, he is a man of steel, and is seemingly impervious to injury. Whenever I've watched him play, the Ivorian's amazing body strength is clearly evident, and with Daniel Sturridge susceptible to regular injuries, it will be beneficial to have another solid unit in the team.

There's no way Bony can 'replace' Luis Suarez, but he is a goalscorer, and the priority for Liverpool is to replace the Uruguayan's goals/assists, not his skill/tricks etc. Of course, it will be amazing if LFC can sign a player as exciting as Suarez, but the chances of that happening seem slim.

If Bony can score 20 goals next season - which, based on his history, is a definite probability - then that will be go some way to filling the Suarez void. He might not do it in the same style, but that is irrelevant.

Granted, there is a legitimate concern over how Bony will be utilised in the team. To be effective, he needs to play centrally, and unlike Suarez, he is more reliant on good service to get on the scoresheet. The latter aspect shouldn't be a problem, but Liverpool will probably face a negative reaction from fans if Sturridge is pushed out wide to accommodate the Ivorian.

Even with this issue, though, the deal is still worth it. Sturridge is definitely going to miss games this season, and like last year, I'm sure Liverpool will play with two up-front in quite a few games. Plus, having another direct competitor may spur Sturridge on to even greater heights, which can only be positive for the club.

  1. My view is that Bony is a player that thrives from crosses into the box and is a predator in front of goal. Liverpool does not play that style and it would be Andy Carroll all over again. We need a pacy striker to compliment Sturridge and not adapt to him.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Totally disagree with the Carroll comparison. In Holland, his game wasn't based on crosses into the box; that's just the way Swansea play, so he adapts and produces the goods. It's good to have strikers with contrasting styles, and Bony's record for his entire career shows that he is a goalscorer.

  3. Well said. Its a goalscorer who is also comfortable coming deep and playing football, thats what they need.

  4. I don't think most Liverpool fans will mind him signing for us after all he's a very good player and he has proven he can cut it in the premier league. But I think the reason most fans are reserved about the signing is because we want someone genuinely top quality. We've signed a lot of good and very good players but no one truly outstanding. Especially when Chelsea, arsenal, have signed world class players man united are linked with a handful and will undoubtably get one and city is already full them

  5. Don't always agree with you Jamie, but here you hit the nail on the head! Bony to Liverpool is a no brainer.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Would he be playing in the African Championship come Jan/Feb,, or when ever it occurs, ? If so, how long would he be absent. ?

    ReplyDelete
  7. Good point. He will miss one month in January but will also be hindered due to fatigue.

  8. Fair enough. In the recent past ( past 10 years) , no tall striker has thrived for Liverpool. Crouch and Carroll have both failed. Bony is a quality striker an will no doubt bury any chances provided to him. But, it is not his quality that is in doubt. He is a player who plays with his back to goal and not one who could latch on to a Coutinho through ball behind the defence. He will always slow the pace down and will prevent us from countering. Strikers with contrasting styles could be good but has failed with Suarez/Carroll. I respect your view but do not feel he is a right fit for us.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Agree with JK. Bony is the best option available right now. Better than Cavani and Lavezzi who are struggling to score as many goals in Mickey Mouse League.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I think he is the main target probably already sorted. Ian Ayre will need 2 holidays.

    ReplyDelete
  11. He doesnt just thrive on crosses though. He thrives on being in the box at the right time. He has fantastic feet and can almost always release a shot under pressure. He is deadly in the air. He's the player you want when you play possession football - creating lots of chances, and need a striker in the box as much as possible. Opposed to the counter attacking that Sturridge is thriving on. Aka exactly what we need when we're struggling to break down teams.

Admittedly he isnt the most glamorous of signings but neither was Sturridge when he signed. Of course, I'd love us to sign Cavani / Falcao but its not going to happen. But Bony is the best of the rest available imo.

  12. Is it Suarez's goals or his creativity and drive that we really need to replace?

Even without his goal we'd have scored just one less than Chelsea who finished just two points behind us.

    ReplyDelete
  13. The writer has no idea. I know for a fact that he isn't "very keen" on going anywhere. Mark my words.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Yes, but all those things can be said about Lambert as well but the thing is that he does not have the pace. It is all well and good saying that he is in the box at the right time but the same was said about Soldado and Altidore who scored so many goals in different systems but failed in systems not suited for them. Our system is not suited for Bony because players like him thrive on being the focal point. Another thing is that him and Michu struggled together last season but when Michu got injured and Bony played alone, he was the star. i would have him as lone striker but then, why would we pay 20 mil for a backup.

  15. SSB, Sturridge, Sterling, Bony8:24 pm, August 10, 2014

Liverpool fans want world class player but world class players don't want Liverpool. But Liverpool makes world class players. Look Suarez, Sterling, Sturridge and Coutinho for example.

I like Bony and wouldn't mind if we have him. My only concern is how he fits our system. If he would be a bit faster every team would be all over him. He's still a great player so if he can score goals like last 3 season (over 80 goals and 20 assist in all competitions) I'm fine him coming Anfield.

And SSB (Sturridge, Sterling, Bony) which means super smash bros named after the game series would just be cooler than SAS IMO. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  16. We replaced the creativity

    ReplyDelete
  17. what is going to be missed more than suarez goals are his hard work, never say die attitude and pull the rest of the team together add that to the fact that he was never injured these are all qualities worth 75 million on their own. Then we see that sterling's goals were in the main assisted by suarez. the sheer havoc caused in opposition defences just by his name on the team sheet gave us a huge advantage and created space for sturridge and sterling. plus are we looking for another striker to play alongside sturridge or one to provide competition?

is there another player like him? i think not. what a big name will do is give us the psychological uplift we need. this season utd are going to be much stronger opposition and so are spurs under pottechini. top 4 may prove to be much harder than last year.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I found Crouch to be ok

    ReplyDelete
  19. There is no other player like him currently but watching Sterlin and Coutinho, they can be the ones to make oppositon defenders p!ss their pants. Already happened before and we can make it happen again.

i think he should be bought in as a squad player
sturridge, sterling ,coitinho shoudl always be the front three unless sturridge is ijured then bony comes in

    ReplyDelete
  21. Crouch didn't do too bad for us. I remember that hatrick against Arsenal. One right, one left, one head. The perfect hatrick.

we need to sign a striker in my opinion that has pace or can go by a player like sturridge, sterling and coutinho

    ReplyDelete
  23. Nevergonnacrackthecode8:36 pm, August 10, 2014

sterling and coutinho will now have a larger part to play , this is what happens when an important player goes
they were both inconsistent last season but now they should be able to thrive

i cannot see him fitting in
    he is too slow
rather have borini too be honest

    i am not for bony
but i wish chelsea and man city thought that when they signed drogba and yaya toure respectivly

    ReplyDelete
  26. As much as I think Bony would score goals I just don't want him and hope BR still has an ace up his sleeve. We need someone with a bit more pace and the ability to play wide if needed. Just don't think Bony will play much unless Sturridge is injured as can't see BR playing 2 up with them.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The clue here is in the statement "Accordng to the Mirror" which makes it a none sense story with no facts to support it. In other words it's just a figment of the writers imagination yet again

    ReplyDelete
  28. Nevergonnacrackthecode8:40 pm, August 10, 2014

2 up front should be sturridge and sterling
we need another player of that ilk , marco reus is obviously the dream but if it is lavezzi it is okay , i guess origi will come in

    ReplyDelete
  29. One game does not compensate for many poor ones. He did have memorable moments but so did Ngog. Not good enough for me.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Nevergonnacrackthecode8:41 pm, August 10, 2014

    exactly
darren lewis said in January liverpool were loaning sterling to swansea , then colin pascoe said they were laughing at that report because sterling was already in the first team

    ReplyDelete
  31. Because we cant be expected to field the same team constantly? Is Sturridge going to play every game? No. Is everyone crying out for another striker just to partner sturridge??? I cant understand that. We need someone to come on and change the game. And that doesnt mean he'll be a backup. There'll just be some games where our best players wont play.

We've got a lot of Ams which tells me we're going to play a 4 2 3 1. And we'll need to juggle the strikers as well as those AMs. Remember back when we were in the CL and we had a depth to the squad? And we could change who was going to play? Yeah? Well...

    ReplyDelete
  32. we need someone who can stick the ball in the net if danny gets injured

  33. Nevergonnacrackthecode8:44 pm, August 10, 2014

i think we should get torres back would love that
    fowler came back

he is a decent striker still

    ReplyDelete
  34. You just can't compare Crouch to Ngog that's just plain harsh!!! Crouch 85 games 22 goals, Ngog 63 games 9 goals.

    ReplyDelete
  35. No no no no no no no no no no no no no no?

    ReplyDelete
  36. or maybe bring back the kenny and rush partnership

    ReplyDelete
  37. But, Liverpool is not in a position to play 20 million for a squad rotation player. That is what we bought Lambert for. Brendo would have to play him to justify the outlay aas he did with Sakho. Of we pay 10 mil, I would be onboard. I am not saying that I am not a huge fan of Bony but it is just too risky a bet. There is also another thing we have not considered. Second Season Syndrome. Christian Benteke. Michu. Kevin Phillips.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Where did i compare. Just said that both had memorable moments but that does not make them good sigings.

    ReplyDelete
  39. but we do need to switch it now and again to keep people on there toes

    ReplyDelete
  40. Keegan and Toshack. St John and Hunt.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Ngog's only good memory for me was when we sold him. Sorry but Crouch did a job for us, Ngog never did such a thing he was awful, terrible, diabolical the list goes on...

    ReplyDelete
  42. im inclined to agree but we have spent 20m on lazer who is pure potential imo

    ReplyDelete
  43. Nevergonnacrackthecode8:50 pm, August 10, 2014

    he is better then lambert

    ReplyDelete
  44. I will always remember when he scored that 2nd goal against Utd when Pepe ran through the length of the pitch and when he scored against Arsenal as Roy's first goal. Crouch was good but as a squad player is the point. He was never good enough to be the man.

    ReplyDelete
  45. That is also a risky buy but Lazar is a player who is more suited to the system.

    ReplyDelete
  46. borini is a real flyer

    ReplyDelete
  47. Lambert has not done too well but mate, have you seen Torres. He is now third choice and cannot hit a barn door. Besides, let him be. he is happy at a "bigger club".

    ReplyDelete
  48. i agree about bony not being ideal to our system but its all about the price to option to availability ratio and when you add it up theres not much better out there ....id of gone for balo or remy regardless of medical but them optioins are not there ...all other options for me are either overrated or overpriced

    ReplyDelete
  49. Laca..Laca...Lacazette is all I have to say.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I've just watched his goals from Vitesse and Swansea. He isn't the fastest guy but he has plenty of pluses. He is very quick from start to top speed and has a very quick release. His right is his dominant foot, but his left is good enough that he uses it naturally when needed and doesn't try to contort his body just to get his right on the ball. Last year, by my count, 9 RF (4 PK), 7 LF, 9 Head (one was really an OG..who?...Skrtel's shoulder. He has very good vision and a superb sense of where the net is...and where the keeper is not. He is very composed and takes the extra little move to open the tube of air for his shot...very Suarez like in that regard I think.

The knock on a target man isn't really true. He just has an exceptional knack for being in the right place at the right time...and he is very strong and can manufacture space necessary to get his head on the ball.

And he is AVAILABLE...and he's a pure striker...and he's not that expensive. Folks we need another striker...even if Borini stays...which I hope he does. I fear Lambert will come to nothing and I am convinced that Studge will never least a whole season without injury. Borini can score and I feel he'll do good things for us yet, but we need another quality striker now.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Hi JK.Haven't seen too much of Bony but from what I read he'll score goals.
He's not as creative and won't come deep like Suarez but will hold the ball up and is good in the air but one question, isn't that what we've got Lambert for?

    ReplyDelete
  52. If we could get him for 10 million, I would be happy but the quoted 20 million is too much for him.

    ReplyDelete
  53. The time for quibbling about money is past. LFC can push a hard line if they want to, but sign him. I don't really see anybody else out there I think would be good. Lavezzi is more of a winger in my mind and Cavani might be a bit over-rated because he has played in Italy and France...but he'd cost more than Bony...way more. Bony has more than demonstrated he can score in the PL. He scored 26 for Swansea last year in all comps. Imagine what he could do with the service he'd be getting with us.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Of course I might be entirely wrong about this like I was for DS and Bony might become a superstar. I have faith in Brendo and if it is good enough for him, it is good enough for me.

    ReplyDelete
  55. i agree. if countiho adds scoring he is messi-esque! and sterling with his pace is going to be one massive player for us - another by the way bought in by rafa!

The progress of sterling is the biggest case for foreign players coming into our game. in his first season he was so shy - he would literally come across the first player and cut in! probably watching downing too much! but he had to pull his socks up if he wanted to play alongside suarez - im sure he got enough bollockings of him! and its worked wonders. I can even see him playing up front on his own if sturridge is injured.

If we can pull of a falcao/reus/pogba - id put us favourites for the league.

a lot of credit to rodgers - whose brought continutiy and aim to our team.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Sorry I just watched him score about 40 goals on youtube and I can't recall one of them that started with him with his back to the goal.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Available being a key word here.

    ReplyDelete
  58. You know...now that I think of it...he reminds a lot of Sturridge...maybe just a step slower.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Not the goals he scored. I have never said that Bony lacks quality. He is a lethal finisher. But, I just do not see how he will get those chances. Do you think Bony would run like DS does behind the defence to s through ball. No. He would wait for the ball to come to him, control it and pass it out wide which can slow us down a bit when we are countering. People are saying that with out service, he will get many chances. But, it is not so easy. Many people thought Zlatan would scores bucket load of goals for Barca becuase of their world class midfielders but it just did not happen. As I have stated, i might be wrong like I was for DS and would happily eat my words if he does turn out good.

    ReplyDelete
  60. He looks good but he's had one good season...in France...which doesn't count for much in my book. At any rate he says he's not going anywhere for at least a year...which is probably a good decision for him. He's settled there. He knows the system and players. If he has a monster year this season...then maybe...but not for us now.

    ReplyDelete
  61. In our system...won't get chances? Really? I find that incredibly hard to believe.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Nevergonnacrackthecode9:21 pm, August 10, 2014

i dont like players like him
but you can't tell me costa, manzukic, lewondowski, girou
    are also fast

    ReplyDelete
  64. I don't what 'like him' means. He scores with comfortably both feet and is great in the air. If we are lucky enough to get him and BR gets 10-15 pounds off of him...his speed will pick up I think.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Nevergonnacrackthecode9:28 pm, August 10, 2014

    i like players like sturridge,augero,sanchez,sterling
that can leave people for dead and impossible to stop
although suarze was not like that he can go past a player
bony does not go past people

    ReplyDelete
  66. Well, Benteke and Michu were both injured for a lot of the season. I actually heard on good authority that Michu's ankle is knackered and he refused to play on a few occasions; so I guess those games add up. Still, I don't really know what your trying to argue. 19mil isnt that expensive... I mean - Sunderland bid 14mil for Borini?? lol

So, who would you go for? And I mean be realistic.

    ReplyDelete
  67. 26 goals in all comps last year for Swansea means the ball is going past people into the net. Good enough for anybody I think.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Nevergonnacrackthecode9:32 pm, August 10, 2014

    but not exciting
just cant see where we will play him , he seems like a poacher like sturridge we need a player that can create as well

    ReplyDelete
  69. Mate, if that is the type of player you want, I have a suggestion for LFC which I was unsure of but if Bony makes sense, he is better. Stefan Kiessling is a player who has been scoring goals for fun for 5 years now, will be cheap and reliable.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I think you need to go watch some video...he can create well enough. there's a report that we can get some Lazio kid for 24.5m...he's 19 and didn't score a quarter of the goals Bony did. How is it then that Bony is too expensive?

    ReplyDelete
  71. Yeah. I know him. His name is Keita Balde Diao. Good potential but nowhere worth the price.

    ReplyDelete
  72. He's 30...but he looks good.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Nevergonnacrackthecode9:41 pm, August 10, 2014

    we should sign iccardi
he is still young , simmilar to bony but will probably be alright being on the bench

    ReplyDelete
  74. We don't need a bench guy. We need somebody who be up front with Sturridge now or who can spell Studge and who can beat teams all by himself if he gets the service he WILL get from our mid-field. All he needs is to lose about 15 pounds. He's 190 now...powerful sure, but he needs speed too.

    ReplyDelete
  75. On transfer deadline, LFC will sign Bony for 15 m. That will be great as he is a proven dynamic goal scorer: I think he is our best shot at the moment. We don't need the likes of Cavani or Falcao due to our Financial structure.

    ReplyDelete
  76. U have no chance of replacing Suarez you all know that he's brilliant. Bony is a good player but will he be the right type of striker for you?I don't think so

    ReplyDelete
  77. You know, his stats are brilliant for a mid table club, his WC performance was great, he has every attribute to be a perfect No. 9; but for some reason, I just don't think he 'll be good for us. Why?

    1. He 'll have to share the CF role with Dan & I feel, he 'll make trouble for sitting on bench
    2. I am not sure if he can play at the wings or into a 4 man fluid attacking system, with lots of interchanging passes & positions
    3. I don't believe he is 25, add another 2-3 years, he is no younger than Cavani or Falco & 'll be in decline shortly
    4. He is a target man, both at Vittesse or Swansea, he was the main player, I don't know how much he 'll be able to play second fiddle
    5. He 'll take either No. 7 or No. 9 (after Lambert's LPR is over) shirt. You know, last 2 men wore these numbers for LFC are Suarez & Torres (Carroll, I go by 35mn, not the player). You know...
    6. I am not sure if he is adding any value to our Starting XI

Can anyone convince me on any of those issues that I am not comfortable? I might be wrong though.

    ReplyDelete
  78. This is a most worrying issue BUT worse still if he goes there, becomes infected and returns with the Ebola virus, the club could be decimated. Otherwise I think he would be a great asset.

we don't have to replace suarez
sturridge, sterling and coutinho are beginning to step up which was always inevitable as they are still young
plus with lovren and moreno and the extra midfielder we will concede less goals
    that is the plan

Everyone knows why Zlatan didn't have the best of times at Barca.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Couldn't be more wrong about Bony. Works hard all over the pitch, players others in - the assist rate doesn't show how many times he has set up chances others have to convert. More goals come from balls played through the middle to feet. He is quite unbelievable in the way he can keep an opponent at bay.
£19 mn would be theft., but we are giving away the family silver this season.

    ReplyDelete
  82. I take it you've only seen highlights.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I don't think many of us fans think he is either!!! Think he's a decent player in the right team but never going to be a world beater. However, if it was a straight choice between him or not signing a striker I would reluctantly take him.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I can't convince you but I do think you are spouting utter nonsense. Thank you

    ReplyDelete
  85. 1. Agreed and if DS is fit he will start 9 times outta 10 meaning Bony likely benched.
    2. No he can't. Centre forward that's it.
    3. No evidence to support this theory just because he may look older than Falcao or Cavani is frankly ridiculous.

Regarding No. 5: Yes you are right, who are they for LFC anymore? But, they were worth wearing the 2 most coveted shirts for one of the most successful Football Clubs ever. Not sure about Bony though.

african players tend to get better with age though
    drogba and yaya toure,kanu etc

  94. Watch the videos. He is not a target man. I don't know about his true age, but he's better than Lambert. I don't think he'll sit on the bench. SAS didn't sit the bench. Why should SB sit the bench...that would be BS;-). He had 4 assists last year...but then who would he have been assisting anyway? The value added to our starting 11 is immense. First and foremost it gives BR an option for two primary strikers when the tactics call for it...we didn't do that much last year did we? Second it gives us a strong goal scorer to spell DS or replace DS when's he hurt...which odds are, he will be. Third it gives us a class striker in LC/FA Cup matches as well as CL matches when two pure strikers are called for.

  95. The only reason Busquets plays as DM ahead of Monster Masch is because he came through the Barca academy and has been part of the team for a few years - Mascherano is by far the best DM in world football..,.he is all heart!

    ReplyDelete
  96. i have to disagree sid bony would imo b perfect fit for us super fast strong as a ox,would be great bombing forward with sturridge sterling and co,also good shot on him good header of the ball also good defending when we wouldn't have the ball, and as i said about his pace when we counter attack he would be right up there on the break,i personally hope we sign him.no reason why he couldn't hit 20goals with us and the players that would be setting him up..

    ReplyDelete
  97. Crouch was a pretty good signing for LFC...before we signed him we struggled away from home...his touch for a tall player is exceptional

In an ideal world we would have held on to him but finances dictated that we had to sell him (for a profit) to purchase Torres..

    ReplyDelete
  98. Yes but if Lazar fulfils his potential we could have a real class act on our hands - similar players who have proved themselves - such as Di Maria are rated at the £50-60m bracket... Hopefully he'll prove to be a bargain within a couple of years

    ReplyDelete
  99. I remember us being in the champions league but I don't remember having too much depth in the striker department. We had Torres and...

    ReplyDelete
  100. Appearances have dropped off the last two years...maybe running out of stamina?

    ReplyDelete
  101. If we sign Wilfried Bony i would be quite happy, its obvious we need another striker, that i think we all agree on, Bony would add at least half the goals that Suarez scored for us in the league alone i think, not only that but if we play with both Sturridge and Bony up front this could work to sturidge`s advantage too in a 1-4-4-2 i think sturridge would have a powerful distraction along side him that would create bigger gaps for the likes of Coutinho and Sterling to thread balls through for sturridge to run on to its a win win situation i think if sturridge gets injured we could then play Boney as a lone striker who would be a benefit for Sterling and say Markovic and or Lallana in a attacking 1-4-3-3. I can only see Bony being a good addition to our team, i wouldn`t want us to get to January and realize its too late for us to recover would you? without another striker of Bony`s ability.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Totally agree, whilst bony is an excellent player in his own right he does not suit us, add to that that we already signed lambert who plays in a similar fashion and this deal becomes totally obsolete. we need someone to play on the shoulder, remy would have been perfect

    ReplyDelete
  103. yeah his names Ricky Lambert

    ReplyDelete
  104. Even Keegan while we at it

    ReplyDelete
  105. I think I agree with almost everything in this article. This occurs rarely so I'm celebrating it with a brief ceremony and putting up a plaque with the date, affixing it to my partition wall .

I think if you go down the list of players that we supposedly enquired about then Bony would be a lower priority: Sanchez, Benzema, Falcao, Cavani ... Bony is just not at that level. Or perhaps that's just the superficial evaluation. Bony has done exceptionally well at Swansea and they really struggled as a team. Just like JK says what you get from him is an almost guaranteed output. He'll score 15 goals in a season, no question. If he brings the right work ethic and really wants to come here (like Lallana and Lovren) then Rodgers will get the best out of him. He'll press well, won't suffer any problems dealing with physical defenders, will provide link-up play and has a great eye for goal. Given what we'll otherwise expect from guys like Sterling, Coutinho and Markovic those qualities are just about perfect. If he's willing to learn and do what the team needs he'll be a good purchase.

I suspect Sturridge will play a little wider to accommodate Bony. It's simply about getting the best from all the players and Sturridge does well drifting out to the right where as I think Bony will be best suited working through the middle. That's not a sacrifice for Sturridge, he'll still score goals but maybe he'll get a few more assists. His willingness to make the final pass against Dortmund was a sign of how he's grown as a player and if he exchanged some of his goals for assists through the season then it's of no matter to the team result.

  106. I just read on the BBC Gossip page that Arsenal are thinking of selling Joel Campbell and Lukas Podolski to Galatasaray. We ought to seriously take a look at one of those two.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Never take these games too seriously but was impressed at how quickly the lads fitted in as with all these things though only time will tell.

  108. Joel Matt Murdock Hwa5:21 am, August 11, 2014

Seriously I don't mind having him. Bony could be our Drogba. :)

    ReplyDelete
  109. Bony in my opinion would be a useless signing, bring either Cavani,Falcao or Marco Reus

    ReplyDelete
  110. I take the point about the reserve goalie, but we probably do need a more experienced number two....but I still think there is a place for Jones as 3rd choice in an emergency. With regard to up front, we played two up and the diamond more often last year to accommodate S & S but we did so at the expense of some defensive solidity, he will play 4-3-3 this season most of the time except maybe for the easier home games....so if we sign Bony and Remy ( and there is no chance of Remy coming now anyway) we will have on who never plays. Lambert will be effective in the role he is supposed to play....allowing us to go a little more direct from the bench against massed defences. You also have to consider the team spirit and identity....we sign to many more and could be a spurs situation

    ReplyDelete
  111. I agree, if Bony and Moreno come in now I will be perfectly happy with our squad. A record of better than a goal every other game in a team that flirted with relegation up until the last few games should translate into better with the creativity in our team. I expect Rodgers to play 4-3-3 most of the season with Studge as the main man but Bony will start all the post CL matches + cup games and any home matches that Rodgers feels we can play the 4-4-2 diamond in.....that should translate into 30 starts if we do well in the cups.....I don't expect him to shift Sturridge out wide in a 4-3-3 to fit Bony in though....he has openly challenged DS to become the 'main man' this season and I think he has earned that right with his performances.

    ReplyDelete
  112. my thoughts exactly. but gotta consider the fact that he is much better than lambert.

    ReplyDelete
  113. The arrogance here is unreal. There is no evidence other than one fidget report 2 months ago which said Bony was desperate to join Licerpool. That was unconfirmed with no actual evidence or source to back it up. Everything that has come out from the player says he is happy to see out his contract which is another 3 years. Buy out clause is also dubious and has not been confirmed. He will be at Swansea come close of the transfer window. It baffles me how you can just assume if you wanted a player you can have him. LFC gods gift to football lol, you'll struggle for top 4 this year without wonder bitey boy :)

    ReplyDelete
  114. sign bony n ayew is enough

    ReplyDelete
  115. Remy(27) is a better finisher than Lambert(32), Bony(25) and D Sturridge(24) and club could bring him in for £10-£12M and he guarantees club 15-30 goals a season.

J Claise(23) is class and quality and just because he is dutch does not mean he is going to be van gaals secret weapon. Claise(23) has a life and a career to live remember

Matuidi(27) is a beast and a class quality footballer, he offers more stability fight and quality than any defensive midfielder we have at the club. And is currently the best defensive midfielder in the world

A Mccarthy(24) is good at corners, set pieces, shot stopping and could improve on his kicking and distribution. But apart from S Mignolet(25) being an amazing shot stopper, he is poor at everything else.

M Reus(24) is the Marquee signing the club need: NOT Cavani(27) NOT Falcao (28)

M Reus(24) should be brought to the club for £23-£27M

W Bony(25) Of Swansea and L Remy(27) Of QPR would cost the club no more than £30M together, both £20M less than E Cavani(27) and R Falcao(28) individually. And in W Bony(25) and L Remy(27) , the club would have invested in 30-50 goals a season.

  116. SSB, Sturridge, Sterling, Bony9:19 am, August 11, 2014

One thing that annoys me more than anything is how people like you have way too big expectations: players like Cavani, Falcao or Reus don't want to come Liverpool. At the moment it would be moving sideways in their career not going forward. If we keep buying young talented players and make them great we start winning more and then the best players want to come play Anfield. At the moment it's still too early.

Another problem is that we can't pay those huge salaries like City, Chelsea or Man United. And for me that's good. It's bad for team if there is one player who gets 3-5 times more money than everybody else. Especially when someone like Cavani ain't even that much bettern than Sturridge, Sterling or Coutinho.

So hopefully if we don't get Bony it's young potential guy like Icardi from Inter or Keita from Lazio. Not a huge overrated name like Cavani. Though Reus would be perfect but I'm realist and know he ain't coming, sorry.

    ReplyDelete
  117. You say defensive solidity:

Lucas(27) and Gerrard(34) do not have the legs or mobility to protect back four well enough and that was huge problem last season. We need a Mascherano / momo Sissoko type DM ( B Matuidi(27)) to sort out that huge problem we have.

As E Can(21) is a box to box midfielder , he is not a defensive midfielder.

Remy(27) and W Bony(25) would cost the club £30M, not even half of what we sold L Suarez(27) for but both would replace the 31 goals a season every season he has left at club.

As in all honesty D Sturridge(24) will be out injured for 5-9 games of every season due to his dodgy ankles. Last season half of our goals was from our strike force

    J Allen(24), J Henderson(24) and P Coutinho(21) do not score enough goals from midfield.

Lallana(26), Markovic(20) and Sterling(19) may score 15-20 goals between them.

But we need more goals in the squad as we are in 4 competitions this season

    ReplyDelete
  118. Lopez would be better, but I'd still take San Iker. Your points about Lucas though, I can't agree with. I respect your opinion but I think that while Can was quiet during the game, when Lucas came on he was his rather poor self. I tried to enjoy watching him the last couple of seasons, but I just dont get it when people say that he's one of our better players. He can't tackle without giving away dangerous free kicks and usually getting carded in the process, can't pass forward, can hardly pass sideways, can't shoot, cant dribble and has very little pace. If you think he's good, thats awesome but from what I see, our views differ greatly. Can may not have done much, but he didnt do much wrong either.
I'd honestly (and its sounding ridiculous now) be putting in a cheeky bid for Schneiderlin. Always liked watching him play, he'd link up with Dejan, Adam and Rickie, he's a massive improvement on Lucas and can give Can something to aim for.
It would be absurd though wouldnt it!?

    ReplyDelete
  119. Rubbish mate you have nt got a clue Dont no what your talking about bony is class power and pace will get 30 Plus goals for Liverpool he will be Playin with better players

    ReplyDelete
  120. I like Bony. The things he does well he does very, very well: shooting from outside and around the box, chest control, unpredictable and explosive movement to get into goalscoring positions. He's strong, mature, and gives an impression of focus and calm on the pitch. He's a proven success at premier league level and wouldn't need to acclimatise.

My impression is that he's the kind of character who'd fit in well with our squad and bring some qualities we don't already have. I believe he's an underrated and possibly undervalued player -- much superior to many of the poor value "big-name" signings from overseas leagues with which we've been linked, in my view, such as Cavani, Lavezzi, or Icardi.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Absolutely. Many seem to be seduced with big fees, believing that this is always a reflection of the players quality. Bony is quality; not as glamourous as some but I believe he will be a huge hit should we sign him.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Not being funny mate but the teams that we are competing with all have 20 million pound squad players. Jovetic, Dzeko, Torres, Chicharito, Soldado etc. we need more strength in depth as well as players that can offer something different from those we already have. Lambert and Borini wouldn't cut it at those clubs and due to getting back in the CL, we are precisely in the position to pay the going rate for quality players. The mistake LFC has made in the past is not strengthening from a position of power; we can't miss the opportunity again.

    ReplyDelete
  123. I am sorry to have infuriated you so much with what I said mate. This is just my opinion. I could be completely and utterly wrong and then, i would happily eat my words. But, until then, I will stick to my view.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Stefan Kieesling , Aritz Aduriz if you want tall strikers. Lacazette and Kevin Gameiro if you want pacy stirkers.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Care to elaborate on why you think a proven goal scorer in the Premier League would be a useless signing?
And what would make Cavani, Falcao or Reus a better option.

    IMO Cavani is overrated.
Falcao is a risk as he is just coming back from a serious knee injury.
Reus is only proven in Germany, could he do it in another league? Maybe. But its still a risk.

Don't get me wrong I would like to see Falcao or Reus at Liverpool, but realistically I don't see it happening.
Bony is a quality player, and would add goals to the team, which is what we need.

    ReplyDelete
  126. My two preferences would be Lacazette and Gameiro.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Tournament will be in Morocco. Currently the virus outbreak is limited to four West African countries. I think that if the outbreak was more widespread they would have to consider cancelling the competition but at the moment it isn't likely or necessary.

    ReplyDelete
  128. 1. Can't really say much on that, but I don't think he would cause problems, he doesn't seem like a 'trouble maker'
    2. Swansea played with a pretty similar system to Liverpool, fluid attacking etc... so I think he would fit in fine.
    3. ummm... I don't know? Why don't you think he is 25?
    4. I'm not sure he is a target man in the traditional sense. More of a poacher I think.
    5. What?
    6. He's scored a fair few goals for a mid table team, there is no reason why he wouldn't continue to score goals like he has done.

    ReplyDelete
  129. Not on crosses no, but his shot stopping and decision making I.e when to punch or catch is terrible

    ReplyDelete
  130. Kieesling and Aduriz? Dont they play with Zimmer Frames now? haha And we wont get Lacazette or Gameiro.

Besides Bony was playing in a struggling Swansea (as well as in the EPL) and still scored loads. So he has that on all of them. Hes the one dude.

i agree but the club have to watch their backs
last season we were guilty of breaking ffp laws but because it was our first year we did not face any consequence

in my opinion the club should not spend more then 130m and 30m net and we already spent 90m , only made 75m

plus bony and remy are very high earners and with rodgers favoring 433 we dont need strikers on the bench for 100k

i would love reus and moreno but i hope the club build without breaking ffp

    ReplyDelete
  132. BONY IS EXACTLY THE TYPE OF PLAYER LFC NEEDS, A DIFFERENT KIND OF STRIKER TO STURRIDGE WHO IS ABOUT PACE & SKILLS(INJURY PRONE). BONY (POWER & HEADING) AND DON'T SAY LAMBERT WHOM FROM SOTON SPENDS MOST OF HIS TIME OUTSIDE THE BOX OR AWAY FROM CB LIKE STURRIDGE . AND WE ALREADY HAVE A WORLD CLASS STRIKER IN STURRIDGE BUT HE NEEDS HELP (REMEMBER TORRES ERA NO ONE TO HELP HIM)

    ReplyDelete

  137. A certain Phil Coutinho was touted by Southampton who we were in direct competition but he turned out great. Lacazette can as well.

    ReplyDelete
  138. Sounds good cheers.

    ReplyDelete
  139. Surley the fact Manquillo hasnt played yet for LFC would be the reason to play him? Same with Lovren, they haven't been involved in pre-season so far so they are the ones that need the game the most to increase fitness and to get to know teammates. Now if they same team starts next Sunday then you can say they were snubbed etc. This was still a preseason game.

    ReplyDelete
  140. Sterling will go to Coutinho role if hes injured and then Markovic or Lallana will fill Sterlings role.

    ReplyDelete
  141. Are you forgetting we made champions league this year? And B Rodgers was promised £60-£70M for making Champions league. And that was before we sold L Suarez(27).

B Rodgers should have £135-£145M to spend this summer. But B Rodgers can bring another £35-£45M

Shipping out and selling NOT Loaning these players:

B Jones GK S Coates CB K Toure CB

M Kelly RB G Johnson RB L Leiva DM

O Assaidi RW FD F Borini

If B Rodgers signed Remy(27) and Bony(25) it would cost club £30M

Both of their wages would be less than £100,000 a week, Remy agreed to £80,000 and Bony would probably be on £60-70,000 a week but if these players score 30-60 goals a season and win us loads of trophies along the way we would make our money back.

Reus(24) should be the club's Marquee signing this summer but for £23-£27M as next season he is available for £19.8M and he does not want to sign new contract so a bid of £23-£27M should bring him to the club.

A Moreno(22) is class and quality but M Rojo(24) Of S Lisbon would be better suited to the physicality and speed of premiership than A Moreno(22)

    ReplyDelete
  142. That's the thing with Johnson, he plays a good game, then plays a poor one. Plays a good game, plays a poor one. Never the less, I thought he was one of England's best performers at the world cup.

    ReplyDelete
  143. The stadium will get underway, but we've signed plenty of promising young players. Wage bill isn't that off the other top four, once we get rid of a few deadwood big earners anyway. Agger will go, Reina was a expensive, Johnson won't be here for long if he carries on like he is, and neither will Enrique. Incentivised pay structure will do it's job, as will BR and the team. We're on to a winning formula, it isn't fluke, or just Suarez.

    ReplyDelete
  144. No - and on the left he is effective. He gets caught out far less on that side, maybe cos he doesn't push up as often. Enrique has looked sluggish and either desperate or lack lustre in his attacking. Flanagan/Manquillo on the right, as it stands. Flano for the first few games.

    ReplyDelete
  145. ...if he (Flanno) wasn't injured. lol

    ReplyDelete
  146. And as I said, you're looking at a sample size of 1 day where Can played 45 minutes.

    ReplyDelete
  147. I still don't know what Can is ...

    ReplyDelete
  148. Then I assume you haven't watched him play very much? He's a versatile box to box player, good with the ball at his feet, strong in the tackle, can pick a pass and likes to make driving runs into the opponents box. He's young and will be good for us this season and BR will develop him into an excellent player over the next few years.

    Now ya know.
