Over the last six months, multiple reports have linked Southampton captain Adam Lallana with a move to Anfield, and with Premier league season now over, it seems that the deal is done, and will be announced in the very near future.
Last week, the Daily Mail reported that Lallana would snub Man United to join the Reds, and according to ESPN on Sunday night:
"Adam Lallana will seal a £20 million move to Liverpool from Southampton next week.
"Despite interest from other clubs Lallana has opted to join Brendan Rodgers' side".
Last week, Lallana - who is ambidextrous, and can play in any attacking position - won three player of the year awards at Southampton's end of year club awards, and in his speech, he made it clear that he could be on the move this summer:
"There are going to be some decisions to make in the summer. I just want to be honest - I'm certainly ambitious [and] I want to one day play in the Champions League and compete for the Premier League title".
Ex-Reds Dietmar Hamann and Jamie Redknapp are fans of the 26-year old. After England's recent win over Denmark - during which Lallana memorably created Daniel Sturridge's winning goal - Hamann enthused:
"Lallana is the most skilful English player I've seen in a long time. Skill and balance. Beautiful to watch".
Redknapp was also impressed:
"Adam Lallana booked his place on the plane to Brazil. He’s a certainty after that little bit of quality to check back with his right foot then stand up a beautiful cross with his left for the winner"
Having spent his whole career at the club, Lallana is Southampton through-and-through, and he's highly thought-of by his boss, Mauricio Pocchetino, who recently praised the attacking midfielder for his form this season:
'The one person who deserves all the praise for his improvement is the player himself [Lallana]. His performance has been amazing over the last few games.'
Lallana's stats for the last five seasons:
* 2009-10: 20 goals/5 assists in 56 apps.
* 2010-11: 11 goals/13 assists in 41 apps.
* 2011-12: 13 goals/11 assists in 43 apps
* 2012-13: 3 goals/5 assists in 30 apps

Excellent stats overall, but it's clear that Lallana finds it harder to consistently score/create in the Premier League, as evidenced by the drop in output during his two years in the top division.
With that in mind, £20m is a bit of a rip-off, especially for a player who was playing in the lower leagues only two seasons ago, but Lallana is English, so inflated transfer fees (unfortunately) go with the territory.
One thing's for sure, though - he'll provide great competition for both Henderson and Coutinho, and in an attacking sense, he'll also be a significant upgrade on Joe Allen. Indeed, if LFC manage to seal the deal, it will almost certainly consign Allen to permanent squad player status.
Given his consistently impressive form for Southampton, I'm cautiously optimistic that Lallana can do a good job for LFC, but with pressure and expectation that comes with playing for Liverpool, there's no guarantee he'll replicate his current form at Anfield.
Rodgers can give Lallana the best possible chance to make an impact by playing him as a number ten/central playmaker, which is (arguably) his best position. Yes, he can play out wide, but this will not the optimum use of his creative talent.
As a comparison: Kenny Dalglish limited Jordan Henderson's effectiveness by repeatedly playing him out of position in his debut season; here's hoping Rodgers doesn't make the same mistake with Lallana. Using the current squad, this is the formation I'd like to see with Lallana in the team:

We will see how it goes, as we all know what these transfer situations are like, that being said I do like lallana's playing style and hope that a deal can be done.
ReplyDeleteHe'd be a brilliant signing, I think very few (if any) fans would be displeased by this. It's not just that he's English, it's that he's proven himself in the Premier League. That one season of slightly diminished stats becomes irrelevant because he's shown that he can adapt. It's always tough taking the step up from the Championship so to have one season of adjustment and then show his true class again is exactly what you'd expect.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely happy to see him in that line up you suggest, it would be Liverpool's best option. Coutinho would hurt to suddenly not be first choice but what's great about all these players is their flexibility. Lallana, Coutinho and Sterling can all play centrally or shift wide and they will do so actively during the game. These three players will have to work hard, both on their individual games and on their team play and I can see all of them improving quite a bit next year. A signing like this means we've Coutinho on the bench instead of e.g. Moses and that's the kind of quality we need. Plus they can rotate regularly, cover for injuries ... it's ideal.
20 million pounds is to be expected, I think it's just the price you pay for a player of this quality who has had a proven season in the top flight. We could spend a bit less and take the risk on a player from a lesser league but I think this deal makes sense. Lallana wants to play for us, he has the right mentality and has already been playing the kind of football that LFC want to play. Southampton have been pretty good this year and the way they pass the ball is a lot like what Rodgers is aiming for.
Not sure what this means for Suso and Alberto. How can either of them get a chance when Coutinho is on bench? It's going to annoy some people but I still have that nagging feeling that Suso has been in the shop window all season and that we'll sell him for a modest fee. 5-10 million euros would be an OK return on the investment we've made over the years. Alberto is then the fringe attacking prospect who needs to show something special to break into the team.
Sorry but that team you have there is just not good enough for premier league and champions league .

If we are going to make good signings now is the time before world cup because after world cup they will be over priced.
I thought players like Pastore and Moura who were high priced that are much cheaper now would be Brendan Rodgers type players then lallana.
We need defence we need midfield and one more striker so that's at least 6 with financial fair play don't know how that works. and have to sell dead wood.
I just hope they have plenty of money left over for 2 quality full backs i dont really like the signing but i will be happy to see him prove me wrong as i still think Coutinho is a better option.

As much as I would love to see Lallana sign for us, I would also like Liverpool to focus on the defensive side of game as well, conceding 50 or more is not on next season, I'm not from Liverpool nor do I live in Liverpool, but I'm a fan to the core!! And watching them concede so many goals and fashion in which we did really grip, just think where we would gave been if we did not concede so many.

Well, call me Mr.Lonesome but I voted no. Not because I think he is a bad player but because I get the feeling that we'd be signing Allen all over again. Different types of players but we'd again be signing a player based on one good season in the Premier League. What we need if we're going to spend 20 million, imo, is players who have consistently performed well and stood out. A player like Konoplyanka who has been the top player in his team for a couple of years now. It has a bit of a Dowining feeling too. We're paying much more for a player because he's English than we need to to get the same or even better quality. And if we didn't have any English players to begin with I could understand that but we do. There are four or five in every lineup.Plus, we'd be signing a 26-year-old who it has taken until that age to have a season worth noticing. Again, I'm not saying he is a bad player. I think the fact that he scores as many goals in the PL as in the Championship shows that he did make the step up whereas a dropping assist rate says more about the strikers in front of him. But for 20 million we should be getting Lambert along with him.

You'd better hope United sign a bunch of players in the summer before this one bad year becomes two, then three, then .... a few years outside the top 4 and you can bet there are plenty of players who don't want anything to do with you.
ReplyDeleteThat's an entirely fair comment, I don't necessarily disagree with you. It could go wrong and he might struggle to really make a big impact. But the difference between this guy and Konoplyanka is that Kono has no experience at the top level of football and could still be a flop. Lallana is far less likely to fail, at least in my view. He proved himself in the championship and then, after a year where he wasn't quite at his best, proved himself again in the Premier League. Given that it's the toughest competition in the world I think he's done enough. If he can re-produce those 2013-14 stats at Liverpool next season that would be enough for me. Going for someone like Kono would be a bigger risk, that's how I see it, and I wonder if we're fooling ourselves that Kono really is as good as we might imagine him to be. Is there really enough evidence to justify that confidence? Where as with Lallana I think the evidence was there every week. Just watching him play I think you can see the class. He's a very good football player.

ReplyDeleteHowever, I don't think that for 20M he is going to come in and dramatically improve us or take us to another level. I would take him though, it's good depth, maybe for a lesser fee, as I'm worried funds won't be spent in the right areas.
IMO we need to sign a fullback for each flank before anything else. Then use the likes of Borini to boost the squad. After that, if Lallana is the big bucks signing, so be it.
He will be superb at Liverpool....................top player!!!

If we could see our way to the long term view maybe Shaw is an option but there are probably better ways to spend that kind of silly money. I think we'll need to spend at least 10 million a piece and get Enrique & Johnson off the wage bill to be able to afford it.

ReplyDeleteMaybe my brain is infected by the gratuitousness of modern football spending, but to me 20 million doesn't seem a rip-off. There's no doubt he's a classy player, and he has plenty of premier league experience now and proof that he can cut it at the top level. He will provide much needed squad depth and competition for Coutinho, who still has much to learn. Great English players are hard to come by, hence the slightly exaggerated fees, but it's gratifying to retain that core of 'Englishness' in an English team. I'd say it's a pretty good deal for all parties.

ReplyDeleteReally hope this goes through. I've loved watching Lallana this season. He is exciting, unpredictable, has that bit of magic about him this season that he didn't before. I hope he can carry that form into he WC and next season.

20mil may seem expensive, but I am happier we are paying that bit over the odds to get the players we really want early (before world cup), than pulling back and signing the second or third choice player for less, who turns out to be ineffective and a waste of money anyway.(which has happened previously)

Also, I honestly feel that if we get a good bid for Lucas then we should let him ago, it seems like his progress has stalled big time mainly due to his injury record since 2011. IMO anyway.

PS £20M for Lallana seems a bit excessive. I know there's many factors to consider though, such as age, performance, stats, experience and nationality.

I think he would be a definite upgrade over Joe Allen for sure. Lallana has everything that Allen lacks. He has size, strength and speed. Combine that with his passing and dribbling and scoring ability and it is a good combination. Allen is a work horse and is a good passer of the ball but unfortunately he is most often bullied due to his size. He simply cannot handle bigger players simple due to his lack of size, speed or strength. That results in him trying too hard and usually results in a foul in a dangerous area. He's a good player but cost too much to become a squad player.

There are two hugeee weakness in Liverpool at the moment:

2. The team is extremely dependent on Suarez.We need another superstar to bank upon when Suarez either leaves or when he runs out of steam(like he has been for last few months)
I think the reason why we are going for Lallana is that most player playing for LFC either thrive on running or producing through balls..like Stturidge,Sterling,Coutinho,Henderson.No one there who can play intricate passing when we have to break the bus.And believe me next season every team will come to Anfield to park the bus and win a point. Maybe Lallana can help in that regard but i am not sure.Lucas Moura,Markovic,Iturbe would be the kind of player i would go for. Lets hope he doesnt flop like Downing.

Remember we have four tourneys next season. There should be plenty of minutes for everybody. Some may not get the matches they want, but they're all important.

I disagree with £20m being to much for him. In my opinion that fee would represent good value for money, especially when you consider Man U are paying £27m for Shaw who is a bigger risk given his age.
ReplyDeleteLallana has proven himself to be one of the Premier League's best attacking midfielder's this season, having gone on from a good debut PL season last year. You can quote all the stats you like, but all you need to do is watch Southampton play to realise he is creative, technically excellent, and has the ability to dictate games. Add to that he has leadership qualities (something Liverpool are in need of to help Gerrard out IMO),versatile, and hard working; if anything I think £20m slightly under values him. Also re the stats, playing in a better quality side like Liverpool, with a higher quality of forward and midfielder supporting him, should improve Lallana's stats next season.
We could have gone abroad and gone for a foreign attacking midfielder but you've got to take into account it is a gamble to go for player who is likely to take time to acclimatise to a new country and league. In this case I think £20m represents good value when you compare him to some recent foreign attacking midfielder signings who have come to the Premiership, or transferred between Premiership teams:
Fernandinho £35m
Fellaini £27m
Oscar £19m
Lamela £26m
Mata £37m
Willian £32m
For me none of these players have outperformed Lallana this season.
I reckon Lallana will be sound addition, he is a geniune Iniesta like player- good on the ball, two footed etc. Additionally he is a goalscoring midfielder, scoring 10 goals for Southampton this season and Liverpool being a better team that creates more you can see potentially a consistant 12+ goals per season midfielder which we would be great. 20 million isn't cheap but not too expensive seen as it in many ways being a risk free signing, in the sense he has now has a good experience of the BPL and wouldnt need to necesseraly need to adapt as much as a player from abroad. So for BPL great, but the concern is UCL, having no experience however I am hoping that we should sign another attack minded player too. Tello is a good shout for 8 million especially considering he has valuable experience at the top.

ReplyDeleteInteresting article. It is still a charge levelled at lots of footballers "he's paid all that money and he can't use both feet." It certainly gives defenders something else to think about when he's running at them.

ReplyDeleteit will come down more to his mentality next year if he signs for liverpool more than his skill because he already has shown he has that and will develop a lot better with better quality around him , but we have seen in the past how moving to a big club can effect some players , with the weight of expectation on their shoulders , but i must say if he chooses liverpool he will be better off because rogers has something that a lot of managers dont man management skills , rogers will turn this lad into a gem once he gets the weight of a big club of his shoulders , we all seen what he has done with henderson imagine what he can do with this lad ynwa

ReplyDeleteJaimie, I agree with your observation about Coutinho. He's had some barnstormers but, as you say, could use the competition. Lallana is good enough for me (because mine is the opinion that matters. Obviously).
ReplyDeleteI'm uneasy about rich clubs pinching the cream of up-and-comers like Southampton. As a supporter of a smallish team in South Africa, it hurts to see your best players follow the glory and effectively stunt the smaller team's growth. However, if Lallana is being open with the Saints, then bring him on.
All the sweeter if he rejects the scum in the process, too.
Slightly off topic, have you seen the rumours about LFC bidding for Cristian Benavente of Real Madrid Castilla? I've only seen YouTube clips of the guy, but it felt like I was witnessing the beginning of something special. He just looks a magnificent player. Maybe worth a Google, just for fun. I'm outy.

ReplyDeleteAs always Liverpool will have their price. Some fans get on the club's case to just "get the deal done" but this is another instance where we need to do the right thing. 20 million is about the limit of what you'd spend on Lallana. You're absolutely right that if it is more like 25 or even 30 then there are better players we can aim for. I trust the club to do this. I just hope we don't fool around trying to get a deal that we ultimately can't get done, which is what they've struggled with. They need to establish ASAP what the required price is and, if it's too much, forget about him and move on.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like Southampton are now try to ask for £25-£30M , A Lallana(26) is class quality player but he has not proved himself in europe or on international scene. So B Rodgers should offer £18-£20M no more.
ReplyDeleteAs if Southampton want £25-£30M Liverpool should use that money on bring C Fabregas(26) Of Barcelona to club or Isco(21) Of Real Madrid to club.
B Rodgers needs to bring in M'Vila(23) Of Rubin Kazan to club this summer for £7-£10M instead of bidding for A Song(26) Of Barcelona or S Mbia (27) Of QPR. M'Vila(23) fully fit and injury free is better than any of these two fully fit and injury free.
B Rodgers should also bring in I Rakitic(25) Of Seville for £16-£18M
Snubbed, really? As he says, United have never been in contact, showed no interest in the player what so ever, if that is snubbed according to Mail, then we are not the only club being snubbed, for every player signing for a club, all the other club's in the world are snubbed for that player, even if not interested, and people make money out of writing this.
