'I can leave': BR wants £15m striker with history of 'physical problems'. Mistake...right?

Liverpool are reportedly lining up a January move for former Spurs and Arsenal target Abel Hernandez, who plays alongside Reds striker Luis Suarez for the Uruguay national team.

In September, the Express reported that Liverpool were 'optimistic' about signing the attacker in January, and according to The Mirror this week:

"Liverpool are targeting Uruguayan striker Abel Hernandez, who has caught the eye of Brendan Rodgers"

In 2011, Palermo rejected a €10m bid from Spurs, and Arsenal allegedly tried to sign Hernandez on transfer deadline day, but the deal reportedly collapsed at the last minute.

The Reds interest in Hernandez stretches back to the Kenny Dalglish era, and during the January 2012 transfer window, Liverpool reportedly considered making a 'significant bid' for the striker, who has a great record of seven goals in 10 internationals for Uruguay (though four came in one match against Confederations Cup whipping boys Tahiti)

£15m-rated Hernandez definitely wants to leave Palermo, and in September, he told reporters:

"The club told me that I can leave if the right offer was made. They know what I want and they know what they promised me. Serie A is beautiful, but I don't want to lose the chance of playing at the World Cup next summer, and that is what pushed me to ask for a transfer."

In November, former Palermo director Giorgio Perinetti sounded a note of caution over Hernandez, though. He told Radio Toscana:

“Hernandez meanwhile has struggled for a long time with physical problems. I have no doubt that when he returns he'll show his full potential.”

In an August interview Italian newspaper La Reppublica, Palermo boss Gennaro Gattuso slammed Hernandez in public for his 'unacceptable' attitude at the club. He raged:

"His training is unacceptable. I cannot give anyone a free ride, otherwise my concept of a group goes out the window. He has to tell me, the club and the fans if he wants to stay at Palermo. What Abel cannot do is continue to train the way he has been in recent weeks. It is unacceptable.”

So: a long history of 'physical problems', and an 'unacceptable' attitude to training. Doesn't really sound like the type of player Brendan Rodgers would pursue. A few of other concerning facts:

* Averaged only 23 appearances a season over the last four years.
* Scored only 22 goals for Palermo in the last five completed seasons.

On the other hand, with 11 goals in 19 games so far this season, Hernandez's average appears to be improving.

Worth a bid, or steer clear...?

  1. Plays alongside Suarez for Uruguay? How can he because Suarez is supposed to be racist. We have players out on loan who have started to produce the goods. Call them back on the other hand this move good be good backup partnership with Suarez, I say worth a gamble.

  2. No, SAS will get us through to the end with a little bit of Aspas sprinkled on top! then we get the real star of the bunch out there!!!......wait for it.........wait for it...........wait for it........Borini!!

  3. Only on a cheap deal as he is playing in Serie B this season, certainly not £15m........................no chance!!!

  4. Assaidi and Suso should be brought back now!!

  5. Suso went on loan because he wanted regular first team football. Is he going to get that when he returns from his loan with Henderson and Couthino well ahead of him in the pecking order?

  6. season long loans usually mean exactly that, there will be a contract and a fee, maybe that contract says we cannot call them back till the end of the season

  7. maybe he's only racist against french players, I'd say worth the gamble also....and it might sway Suarez to stay(if he has thoughts of leaving that is).

  8. Thought we had a thin squad?.

  9. If we refund half of the loan fee then why not?

  10. Yeah at the moment with all our injuries we do but he Suso is better off playing for another team at the moment that will select most of the time in order for him to develop his game.

When he is back next season at Anfield he will not be first choice so it will be interesting to see whether he stays or goes. The choice will be up to him.

  11. This would top all of the transfer mistakes to date but i really cannot see it happening.

  12. Such matters are hopefully in the past now and should be left there..

  13. Either way we need players to cover injuries, we either buy or bring players back................we can't do neither!!!

  14. This window will prove very difficult to buy quality players due to the World Cup being around the corner.

Players will be reluctant to move as they will have to settle at the new club and that might hinder their chances of making the the World Cup if things go pear shaped.

  15. Because it's written into the contract that you can't just call them back and that's then legally binding...

  16. Lets hope we keep players fit then, maybe Teixeira and Ibe will get some minutes???

  17. Sorry to disappoint, but I wanted to watch Suso last week, (they show the spanish games here in Indonesia), he was introduced in the 87th minute, so dont build up your hopes too much for him.

  18. I hope I can read somewhere the news we are trying to bring back poulsen and jovanovic!

  19. You cant do that! The deal was for a season long and thats it. No one can turn it around. Do you know a case when a club brought back their player in mid season after the deal was signed to be a season long? Forget about that.

  20. Let him stay where he is.

  21. "plays alongside Reds striker Luis Suarez for the Uruguay national team", providing that Cavani, Forlan and the local farmer's goat are all injured. Avoid at all costs I say.

  22. The appearances is a little misleading, part is due to injuries (a season long one), and the other part was due to age, like most, there is a bedding in / bench warming phase.

He's not bad, is fast, has scored some nice goals, but did have attitude problems (like most 20 y/os), now this might be different, could be worth a go, his moves are better than Sturridge. Plus there should be at least 1 more striker in the mix other than Aspas.

  24. Make Suarez feel cosy at LFC???

  25. I don't think we can attract players of such caliber yet!

  26. What matter to Luis is CL.

  27. Nononono he sounds like trouble he would cause disruption

  28. Is this the guy Suarez recommended to BR???????

    ReplyDelete
  29. The. Answer for this guy is way beyond what anyone on this site is qualified to answer. I have faith that FSG and BR will vet the intangibles of who this guy is and what makes him tick. Suarez knows this guy and his opinion will surely be sought but will he be honest or will he be faithful to his friend? Surely our guys will check as many other sources. In the meantime, we should also look elsewhere and start with attacking mids....

  30. Amen, amen amen!!! Been thinking and saying this for some time. Are they the gods or not? Let's find out....

  31. He has no behavioural problems, He is a nice lad and he is now the captain of Palermo. His only problem (and big one) is that he is injury prone, but he is a great great player. Very similar to Sturridge. In 2010 he sent Cavani to the bench.

I would love to see him in LFC.

  32. buy him?.......... just to see him and Studge have a dance off? other than that............................
