'Get him, Brendan' - Hamann urges LFC to sign 'monster' £20m star. Worth a try...?

Anfield legend Dietmar Hamann has urged Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers to make a bid for Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku before the close of the summer transfer window.

Commenting on Chelsea's team sheet for the Premier League bore-draw with Manchester United on Monday night, Hamann said:

"No centre forward for Chelsea and Jose Mourinho wants to bring another one in.

"He obviously doesn't fancy any of the three [Torres/Ba/Lukaku] he's got.

"Get Lukaku to Liverpool, Brendan".

Liverpool were linked with a move for Lukaku - who grabbed 19 goals/4 assists for West Brom last season - in 2011, and in a recent column for the Daily Mail, former Reds midfielder Jamie Redknapp observed:

"Jose Mourinho loved Didier Drogba as the focal point of his Chelsea attack [but] if Baby Drogba is not going to play regularly then another loan will keep him active. I can think of lots of takers".

Like Aston Villa's Christian Benteke, Lukaku is a beast of a player, and Chelsea would be stupid to let him go out on loan again. However, if they're not going to play him regularly - which looks likely at the moment, especially if the Blues sign Wayne Rooney - then other clubs could benefit.

After watching Lukaku bully Liverpool's defenders during West Brom's 2-0 victory over the Reds at Anfield in February, Robbie Earle argued that the striker would be a good buy for the club. He told ESPN:

"What a monster this boy is. Still not 20 years of age, but he bullied Liverpool into submission in the end. They say he isn’t quite good enough for Chelsea, well you look at this Liverpool team, and strangely enough, a player like Lukaku would be the perfect complement to their side".

Lukaku - who cost Chelsea £20m - grabbed two goals against Liverpool last season, and helped West Brom to a humbling 5-0 aggregate victory over the Reds. He is everything Andy Carroll should've been, and he's four years younger than Liverpool's record £35m signing. He has great pace, power, close control, technique, balance, and the ability - as Earle suggests - to bully defenders into submission.

Over the weekend, Mourinho insisted that he has no problem selling players to rivals. He told The Guardian:

"That old-fashioned mentality of 'I don't sell players to the same country' doesn't help the market [or] the players. Sometimes you push players abroad when you should keep them in your league, because when you [do that] you are contributing to making your league the best"

That's a very enlightened view from Mourinho, but is it just posturing, or does he really mean it? Perhaps Liverpool should test his resolve and attempt to take Lukaku on loan? If Mourinho is sincere, then it shouldn't be a problem...right?

  1. It'd be a great piece of business if we can get Lukaku on loan, but, is Chelsea going to give us their 2 -3 players on loan considering Moses and Mata links too? I doubt Chelsea would let go off him anytime soon but he can be convinced for the sake of WC though. More important signing as of now is the CB and then a striker/winger IMO.

  2. Lukaku and Mata for Suarez?

    ReplyDelete
  3. A centre back and centre mid are required now. They should have priority over anything else. A winger is less important if Henderson can repeat what he did today and we won't need a striker if Suarez comes back into the fold (though he doesn't deserve to). Feel for Borini though, he can't get minutes with Suarez unavailable. All this squad trimming and now we have 4 injuries to deal with - It's time to act and bring in a minimum of two players now but let's hope there is not another Carroll panic buy.

  4. and where does danny sturridge play liverpool need a def.mid in case lucas gets injured and i would sell agger he is 28/29 he has 2/3 seasons max

    ReplyDelete
  5. Leave it with me.I'll have a word with Jose - I'll try and get Moses thrown in too :-)

    ReplyDelete
  6. jose is full of the usual brown, cattle-like substance. if he thinks a rival could gain an advantage with one of his players, he would not let any of his players near that club.

    ReplyDelete
  7. that will be a gud buy for th reds. go fo him mr rodgers we need competition in our attack

    ReplyDelete
  8. and leave us with almost -1 centre halves!?

    ReplyDelete
  9. sign diame 3.5m,sakho 6m and capel 6m fsg won't release big funds until we get top 4

    ReplyDelete
  10. It sounds like Sakho could be on his way and thankfully Skrtel is fit for Sunday

    ReplyDelete
  11. regarding sakho, when he is pictured signing the contract in the kit, i will believe it.

    ReplyDelete
  12. i would rather sign ba from them. at least we know he can score goals.

    ReplyDelete
  13. This teasing us Liverpool fans is enough .
Come on FSG are going to do nothing come on they asked for Mata on loan
doesn't that tell us everything . Sakho Mata Lukaku are there for the taking.
    IT wont happen .
    FSG simply lie

    ReplyDelete
  14. Even if we are in top 4 they would sell to buy

    ReplyDelete
  15. Here's why this will not happen - Lukaku is a lifelong Chelsea supporter and he will not leave unless there is no chance he will play. Mourinho rates him highly. Rooney will not go to Chelsea. A loan would be the only way we could get him to play for us but why would he come? He obviously wants to be at Chelsea and to come to us with Sturridge in the form he's in, would mean that he needs for Sturridge to get injured before he'd get a chance. For a center forward what we need is someone older, maybe even over thirty, who wouldn't mind playing only 20 odd games a season including sub appearances but who can still get goals. Someone like Kuijt but with more goals in him.

  16. FSG haven't exactly proved any of the doubters wrong so far in this transfer window. I see three possibilities:

    1) they're committed to returning LFC to good health and believe there are hungry, talented, young players who won't mortgage the clubs future and will eventually lead us to the promised land.

    2) they are the stereotypical American owners, who see LFC as a business that they expect to make a decent return on

    3) they are balancing the books with a view to selling LFC?

    Time will tell...

One thing I am pleased with is their decision to hire Rodgers. He's doing a great job in difficult circumstances.

  18. I bet we'd be the first club in history to have had God, JC AND Moses on its books. How do you like them apples Barca with your pope....

    ReplyDelete
  19. I think you understimate Mourinho. If he feels the player is not good enough for Chelsea, he wouldn't mind being up against him either. Any team can only field 11 players at any given time so if one of his players who he doesn't play a lot wants to leave, he'd let them rather than keeping them around which is bad for moral. Where his logic falters though is that the likes of Rooney, Suarez and Bale are integral parts of the first teams of their respective clubs and they play regularly. By selling to a competitor then, if you don't want to, you weaken yourself and make them stronger which would be stupid. However, take the Torres situation. Obviously one of our best players at the time and integral to our results. On the flipside he was, according to both Gerrard and Carragher, a disruptive factor in the dressing room. Selling him for 50 million was supposed to make Chelsea stronger but also gave us enough money to not just replace him but strengthen our squad in other positions which would have made us stronger. Obviously that didn't happen but that transfer made perfect sense even if it meant us selling one of our best players to a competitor.

    ReplyDelete
  20. With the problems we have got at the back, we should of asked CARRAGHER to come back for a game or two ? Scholes done it for Man U, surely we would get a hour out of him ! What you's think reds ?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Lol. Moses will lead us to the promised land!

    ReplyDelete
  22. we had a pope as well (john paul II)

    ReplyDelete
  23. I'd do that swap any given day! Lukaku and Sturridge, the new Drogba and Torres. Our options would be spectacular, and they're both fast. Suarez, for all his skill and industry is slow and causes counters to break down. Mata would also be the perfect foil for Coutinho if they're not played together. As much as I love Suarez, he will not be missed.

    ReplyDelete
  24. And when Suso returns, it's the second coming?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Sports Direct reporting that CFC will offer £30m + Torres for Suarez. I love Torres but even in his current form, he is nowhere near worth £25m. Therefore, if Chelsea did want Suarez, then they should give us Lukaku on loan with Torres & Mata coming to Anfield permanently.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hang on a minute, so we get all these loan players we have a good season and then they go back to their clubs and we are in a far worst position. What happened to building on the previous year. How bloody far have we fallen?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Sturridge and Lukaku can't play together. Out and out strikers cannot play together unless one of them has the ability to play in support. Suarez can do that. Fowler could do that. That's why Heskey and Owen never worked either. Yet Fowler could play with either two.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I don't think this Mata thing was ever anything more than a silly rumour made up by people adding one and one up and getting four.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I had Lukaku AND Benteke on my summer transfer list as a power forward type with mobility, hoping either one would be added. given our transfer record, and Benteke signing I figured there was no hope. if we could get him, I say yes as long as we check whether he adds to or subtracts from team chemistry. ....if ok, JUMP!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Complete lies. That site is notorious for making up transfer rumours.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Could be right but Lukaku and torres Sahko very possible

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'm a big fan of Lukaku but can't see Chelsea letting us have him. Lukaku plus £30 mill then were let chelsea have saurez on loan for 3 months ; )

    ReplyDelete
  33. We already have 2 of the best strikers in the PL now...why do we need another one...who is nearly a complete unknown btw? We need to spend money to fill gaps in CB now that Toure is and Cissokho are hurt. AC won't be long out, but losing Toure with Skrtel maybe not 100% should have alarm bells ringing all over the front office.

    ReplyDelete
  34. We will not sell Suarez. We can't. And we don't want to.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Sturridge can clearly play in support. Actually at the U21s in 2011 he played as a 10 behind Danny Welbeck and was selected in the team of the tournament, as I remember.

Actually I think he played there throughout his successful international youth career, which included being Player of the Tournament at the U15 World Cup in Spain. Didn't he get some Spanish-style nickname, too, at that tournament?

    Off to google.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Lets wait and see they have put their money where their mouth is so far and are turning round a team that sunk under H and G.
More than any marquee signing though i would prefer to see the club on a firm footing financially and its getting there.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Lukaku.. unknown.. have you ever watched a premiership match?

Lukaku is a beast of a striker, he has strength, power, pace and is a great finisher. He would give us more depth and more importantly is a different type of player then Sturridge and Suarez which means more having more options.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Serioulsly?

Did you not watch Lukaku last season when he was playing for West Brom.

He is twice the player Ba is and then some

    ReplyDelete
  39. I would love to see the quotes from both Gerrard and Carragher stating that Torres was a disruptive factor in the dressing room.

I have both of their autobiographies and can't either of them saying that.

The thing I can ever recall either of them saying about Torres is that he is a very quite person and tends to keep himself to himself.

Also heard a number of Chelsea players say similar things.

Being quiet is't what I would call being a disruptive factor

    ReplyDelete
  40. Hell Yeah !!!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Dude.. you really are just making things up in this thread aren't you.

For three successive seasons the two netted over 30 goals between them. Most scored by Owen because Heskey gave him the support.

They also have one of the most effective England partnerships of all time.

Owen has always attributed Heskey as one of the main reason he scored so many goals in what was a pretty poor team.

    ReplyDelete
  42. ...and is currently riding the bench...next.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I agree with you in the sense that if we have a budget, we should be contributing a large part of that to strengthening other areas of the team due to the current strikers we have in place.

If we can sign him as well as a top CB, then I say we go for both.

I have a feeling we won't have that money though.

    ReplyDelete
  44. So mata so that must mean he is a terrible player

    ReplyDelete
  45. I would consider take £25m + Mata.

My two worries are keeping Suarez in the prem. And Mata wouldn't be a direct replacement for Suarez so it would be quite difficult to then pull off another deal for a top quality striker. And I couldn't imagine them including Lukaku in any way, shape, or form in a deal like that.

As much as I'd love it, I can't say I believe it.

    ReplyDelete
  46. you lost me at complete unknown

    ReplyDelete
  47. Your right.. we cant possibly sign a striker and a defender..

Also last time I looked we were not exactly over loaded with striking options.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Phil is King - but I really cant see it because Jose is not daft - is he ?

    ReplyDelete
  49. I agree, but don't forget they got the club on the cheap. When they hand LFC on it will be for a healthy profit, so it is understandable why not everyone is convinced by them yet

    ReplyDelete
  50. LFC should sell Suarez in exchange for Lukaku, Mata and Moses and we'll win the premiership!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Yes they did get the club cheap but there was large debts too to be paid and a lot forget too that the stadium is about to be rebuilt.
They spent a lot just going through the courts to get the club for that i am grateful.
All in all its wait and see i suppose.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Aye. It's a tough time to come in. Man united long since left us behind income wise, and Arsenal are in a fabulous position too now their stadium is paid for (apart from the sh*thead owner they have). Chelsea and city have sugar daddies and spurs have the bale money plus Daniel Levy, who will make mincemeat out of men like Ian Ayer all day long....

    ReplyDelete
  53. And you would want to put our one goal per match on average striker behind someone else why? Babel could also play behind someone but there is being able to and then there is whether it's a good idea or not. In this case it's not. Suarez or Coutinho behind Sturridge is, so I don't see why we would want to change that?

    ReplyDelete
  54. No WAY ON EARTH we should send Suarez anywhere in the prem. Spain or Italy wher flopping, acting and whining are condoned are perfect. Never to e local enemy, period......

    ReplyDelete
  55. and if Sturridge gets injured?

    ReplyDelete
  56. Eummmm...Heskey played on the wing for us thanks for paying attention. And Heskey got credit for a lot more than he earned during his days at Liverpool. Could have been a deadly right winger though but of course Houllier didn't believe in wingers. Or in support strikers.

    ReplyDelete
  57. So Lukaku is going to sit on the bench then? And then why exactly would he leave the club he's Always dreamed of to sit on another club's bench?

    ReplyDelete
  58. They now have an article saying we are signing 31yr old Lescott for £7.5m.....

    ReplyDelete
  59. So your say that Michael Owen is lying?

You saying that Owen and Heskey were not a strike partnership?

Well can;t argue with a person who apparently knows more then the players themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Who says he would sit on the bench?

By your thinking a club can only ever have 11 players.

There is thing called competition for places and strength in depth, 2 things which you appear to disregard.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Never worked? always thought Owen wouldn't have been as effective without Heskey. Was a bull and a whippet with those two

    ReplyDelete
  62. Just said this above, one didnt work without the other

    ReplyDelete
  63. chelsea dont see us as direct competion, it would be like us selling to stoke. we should definately try and get him, ideally permently if not temp with an option to perm. l.f.c shouldnt be looking at getting players on loan look at what happened with sahin. even if they play awesome itl be like losing our star player come the end of the season and all we would of done is make a chelsea player better and we would suffer for it the following season

    ReplyDelete
  64. Mata isn't the front man. Monday I wanted Mata and I was roundly ridiculed as a dreamer. After Tuesday's carnage, we need defensive help NOW.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Just a quick one but how do you think the getting rid of Shelvey is helping to show Henderson he's our next Gerrard.

JonJo used to look like it was going to be him but he just stagnated at prospect level but Hendo is getting better and better, that goal last night just screamed Gerrard to me, everything there the passion and hunger, his head looks ready to explode when he scores lol

    ReplyDelete
  66. Dempsey scored 16 for Fulham 2 years ago...how did that work out for Tottenham?

    ReplyDelete
  67. Lukaku is the new Drogba, I don't need to say anything else. Think of how BR would improve him as player in preparation for CL football next season. Add Mata and Moses into the equation, with what we already and there would be some worried so called top 4 teams looking over there shoulder. We could then focus on getting a couple of good defensive players in.

    ReplyDelete
  68. As for the comment on Henderson, he's just lacking confidence and he's only going to get it back with the support of BR and Gerrard and he could turn out to be a potential replacement, maybe?

    ReplyDelete
  69. Okay then.. hopefully we don't sign Daniel Sturridge as he is was loaned out by and can't get in tot he first team... wait a minute !!!

Another point, just because we need a defender, which nobody is arguing, it doesn't mean you do not consider any other type of player if they become available.

    ReplyDelete
  70. No, it was a case of a player doing well at one club and then not doing as well at another, not like that has ever happened has it?

    ReplyDelete
  71. Moses, Mata & Lukaku for Suarez, job done

    ReplyDelete
  72. dont judge me by your own standards jk i deal in fact and fact alone

    ReplyDelete
  73. thats why im a massive jose fan hes spot on about wanting to keep players in the prem...plus im a massive luka fan ...chelsea have a host of players id do a deal with swapping suarez

    ReplyDelete
  74. Exactly, and for all we know it would be the same with Lukaku...and we don't really need another striker as much as we need healthy defenders right now.

    ReplyDelete
  75. You actually need people to do the deals. We don't have teams and teams of people to go make deals. It takes time to meet, talk, draft, compromise, redraft, agree, examine, etc., etc. That time right now would be better spent on defenders.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Yes we need defenders, also need another DM and attacking player. If another player in a different position come available you simply do not dismiss them.

Also you can use the argument that a player might not do well with every single player in the world

    ReplyDelete
  77. Fine, in which case using your argument if a great players becomes available who is not a striker we should just ignore them. Yeah that makes lots of sense

    ReplyDelete
  78. luka is a kid with a mountain of potential.....he played liverpool on his own last year and won hands down

    ReplyDelete
  79. ill drive suares to chelsea myself for mata and luka

    ReplyDelete
  80. It makes sense when the window closes in 5 days.

    ReplyDelete
  81. We are not smaller than them you know..they should be loan players off us not the other way round. You've just insulted your own club. We are on the rise but it's taking forever. And this transfer window hardly helped. We only took a measly baby step no disrespect to our signings, I think they are clever signings by brendan

    ReplyDelete
  82. Another day comes to a close and we still haven't signed anyone. Am I surprised? No. Talk about a really disappointing summer of minus net spend. Thanks FSG

    ReplyDelete
  83. Who else than Houllier was there? Well except for maybe you...our football with those two up front was: Hyypia gets the ball, Hyypia hoofs the ball onto Heskey's head, Owen runs into space - Three million Liverpool supporters pray he connects and actually steers it into Owen's path - and then most of the time it ended up with him on the floor clutching his head.

    ReplyDelete
  84. sell suarez and get some mony immediatly

    ReplyDelete
  85. One can only wish!

    ReplyDelete
  86. Enough with the Torres talk. We should NEVER take him back because 1) we just isn't very productive and 2) he a traitor S.O.B! Lets stop wasting chatter on him.................

    ReplyDelete
  87. lfc vs manure in league cup, better do some business so
Carragher can take the **** out of Neville

    ReplyDelete
  88. to roncalifornia ur so right,Torres should never be taken back! Chelsea a bigger club yeah right!!

    ReplyDelete
  89. Sounds great to me!

    ReplyDelete
  90. No reason Agger can't have more than three years at 28? Ferdinand is 34, still at a high level, Maldini retired in his 40s after a thirty game season, Nesta played top football at a late age.. Weir, 40s... Toure's been playing good football at 32.. Carra played pretty well last year (some of our best form coincided with him on the pitch).. Gallas kept it going till a later age.. I don't think there's a need to sell him, no reason that Centre backs can't play at a high level at a later age!

    ReplyDelete
  91. Ienough with the groundless rumors! Sign another CD NOW!!!! Also, we need a 2 way midfielder with energy and skill and a striker like lukaku if Chelsea are really stupid enough to put him for sale or loan. As much as I wish it were true, luka isn't coming to Anfield. Midfield and CD are our weaknesses at the moment. It's a gamble to wait until Kelly, Toure, Cissoko. And Skrtel heal up. Allen is our backup midfield? Come on, get serious! If that's true, forget finishing higher than 6 or 7........up front, we could use a bit of veteran help like Moses, but Ibe, Alberto,Sterling Aspas and Coutinho have some goals in them once they sort out how to have more of them populate the box at the same time. That's where a speedy dangerous midfielder causes defenses to spread out a bit....

    ReplyDelete
  92. Lol! Good Stuff Jamie. But is an out and striker what we need most?? I'd prefer we got a really good left sided winger to free up Coutinho to come into centre midfield.

Oh, and a central defender like Papadopulous, Alderweireld or Sakho WOULD BE NICE!!... Seeing as ones retired and two are injured. (Three if you count Cissokho!)

    ReplyDelete
  93. Liverpool couldn't sell second hand cars let alone do good deals in the transfer market no one wants to go there the club is in melt down theres no money there they have to sign 3 players before deadline day and as far as a marquee signing goes forget it these yanks are a disaster get them out we have been linked with 4-5 top players this summer and haven't bagged one that tells the story spurs have jumped over our heads by miles as far as Rodgers goes hes like a nodding dog to these yanks put ur foot down

  94. Jamie I have been reading your articles for 4 years now.. I'm sorry to say but you are d most dillusioned guy I have ever seen u should be banned from posting anything online.. You are a total waste of Internet space and u should be banned of posting anything online... Peace
