'It's been brutal' - Gerrard on pre-season/transfers. Plus, a veiled attack on FSG...?

In news that is sure to delight Reds fans everywhere, Steven Gerrard today signed a two-year extension to his current LFC contract, which means he'll remain a Liverpool player until 2016. After recovering from shoulder surgery, the club's captain can't wait for next season to start, though he concedes that pre-season training is turnout out to be tougher than he expected.

In an interview with the official Liverpool FC website today, Gerrard revelled in his new contract, outlined his main priorities for the season, and gave his view on the club's transfer progress. He enthused:

"I think everyone knows what it means to me. I've been here that long and so to extend, it's a big day for me and I'm really happy for myself and family. It's great news"

On the punishing pre-season training regime:

"My priority at the moment is...trying to stay fit throughout pre-season and getting as fit as I can personally. The training has been really, really tough - it's been brutal at times - but I think the team is going to be a lot fitter this year".

On the possibility of more transfers during the current window:

"We want to see a few more faces to strengthen the team and squad even more. It is an exciting time when you get a couple of new faces in to freshen the squad up - you're at the beginning of the season and it's a fresh start"

On Brendan Rodgers:

"I've got a lot of respect for Brendan as a coach, but also as a guy as well. I've loved every minute of working with him, and I feel as if he is the man to take this club forward".

Gerrard also seemed to take a swipe at the club for allowing him to enter the last year of his contract:

"There was a year left [on my contract] which was quite unusual - I think it was the first time I've got that far down into a contract"

I don't see how that comment can be taken as anything other than veiled criticism of FSG's delay in handing him a new deal. Gerrard didn't need to mention it - he specifically chose to make light of the issue. Reading between the lines, it's seems probable that he's a little frustrated over the whole thing, and we all know how sensitive Gerrard is about contracts being handled in good time (Double Chelsea flirtation, anyone?)

Given Rodgers' excruciating man-love for Gerrard, it's highly likely he lobbied for a new deal last summer, but FSG ultimately sign off on contracts, and it's possible they took some convincing to stump up the cash to extend the deal. Perhaps they wanted to see how Gerrard's fitness held up last season before offering him a new contract?

Gerrard may be a legendary player, but he's in his thirties now, and FSG are definitely not sentimental; the merciless sacking of Kenny Dalglish proved that beyond a shadow of a doubt (!)

The rational side of me says what FSG did made perfect business sense, the 10 year old fan boy in me is screaming - What the hell were they waiting for? He's Stevie G!!! Anyway, happy we still have him, proud that I've watched his entire career unfold, sad that he may never get what he ultimately, desires and deserves...To lift the Premiership title as captain of LFC.

Chirag Vyas said...

Its ok. Nothing is perfect in life. There is only this much you can do right and similarly clubs/players can't make right decisions all the time. We can discuss some of the important mistakes but this is too small to waste time on. Things like this keep happening, we need to just move on and avoid dragging it.

brian1 said...

i dont think u can say that comment was an attack on anyone.. he just said it was quite unusual... he also said he was excited at new players coming in which i presume you would then take as a veiled compliment to fsg??
either way, great to see him sign on for another 2 years.. he can still pick a pass better than most in the league, has solid engine and will be an amazing inspiration/leader to one of the youngest squads in the league for the next 2 years....

Jaimie K said...

Of course I can say that. It's my opinion based on years of observing Gerrard's reactions to things. It's a very probable conclusion. People say things for specific reasons, and Gerrard didn't need to make reference to being in the last year of his contract.

Additionally, the main reason he almost left for Chelsea in 2005 was because the club failed to offer him a new deal quickly enough, so my theory is certainly a possibility.

Max said...

Here is another part of the Interview which does not show any hard feelings...

Does it help to focus the mind knowing that you're not going to face questions from the media about running your contract down?

Yes, I think so. I don't want to be talking about myself or my contract situation going into a season. The contract was first mentioned by the manager in March and in a couple of interviews I was asked quite a bit about the contract. It takes your mind away from the football, so fair play to the club - the timing is spot on. It's all done and dusted and now I can just focus on the football side.

Paul said...

He's probably a bit pissed because they handed out contract to Suarez and he's prob off. Feels a bit taken for granted I suppose.

DeveshChil said...

What if he does which might hbe in the final two years of his career? I know its an outside chance but I'd want all the players to really push for it from now on after they didn't do anything for Carragher. :(

Jaimie K said...

And...? One thing has nothing to do with the other. The question Gerrard was asked did not invite a discussion about being in the last year of his contract. He shoe-horned that into his answer. Human beings are complex creatures, and there are subconscious reasons for everything.

DeveshChil said...

FSG shouldn't have come to the final year of his contract and I do see it as a disrespect to the captain fantastic as well as the fans. I am disappointed with them over this.

Slipperie_Slope said...

Well i for one don't see it as anything but sensible business. In the end he got the contract and FSG got as much peace of mind on his fitness they were allowed in the timescale. In a league where owners are giving managers 8 year contracts, I don't see any crime in caution. Having said that i don't think it was ever a doubt unless there was a severe injury, the outcry would have been immense.
We love ya Stevie and you are a rare breed, one club man.

Jaimie K said...

Good point.

CARR71 said...

why should gerrard be surprised they took so long to offer him another contract ,hes a top player ,and we know how long it takes fsg to make there mind up when it comes to bidding for top players

Max said...

He said the timing was spot on so why would he have a problem with anything?

forceuk said...

We can only dream, it's slightly a deluded dream. But then again, I didn't expect us to walk out of Istanbul in 05 with the CL (Especially with THAT squad!). Not confident we can win it in the next couple of years personally, just think the gulf between us and the rich lot is too great.

forceuk said...

True

Jamie said...

Agree - SG not a spring chicken anymore lol! But there was never any danger they were not going to offer him a new contract based on his playing time, being club captain, fans favorite, and the fact he's prob the best player we'll have at the club come the new season!!

JK - I would have also focussed on what he (and other players) have had to say about BR and his philosophy... there are so many fans who have a negative short term view on his playing style - its great to hear words from SG, Alonso, the new players etc responding and respecting his methods and style of play!!

CARR71 said...

jaimie on another subject the new comments policy ,would it be possible f"ck to have immunity f"ck,as i think f"ck my fingers have, contracted f"cking tourettes syndrome

liverpool4life565 said...

Nothing in It, and I don't see it as Gerrard taking a swipe at FSG. He signed his contract and we can all carry on. :)

Jaimie K said...

He clearly means the timing is spot with regards to getting it done before the season starts. He even says he can now focus on getting ready for the first game etc. I sincerely doubt he means leaving it till the last year was 'spot on'. If that was the case, he wouldn't have said it's 'unusual'. This is just common sense.

Gano1 said...

Gerrard is a legend that still does the business, another 2 years is great news!!!!

Max said...

Well lets agree to disagree :)

CARR71 said...

jaimie who was the last player to openly come out and critisise a lfc manager and still be a player ,they do not rock the boat unless they feel they have no choice ,suhins comments about rodgers were far from complementary about rodgers, also why did carragher not give him another season

Max said...

Is it really necessary for posters to use foul language on this site Jamie?

Jaimie K said...

No. Kids visit the site too, and if you can't formulate an argument without swearing, then a lot of your comments will end up toiling away in moderation hell.

Max said...

Well said.

CARR71 said...

lol its a bit of fun

billy said...

Just Jamie trying to cause shit like usual :)

CARR71 said...

i lot of people do not get what they deserve, and i am afraid gerrard will be one of them this season ,could be one of his best chances yet,4 of the 6 clubs who finished above us have new managers ,but alas it looks like we will lose one of our star players and carraghers motivation, and try and replace it with potential

Max said...

The most important thing is that the club has offered Gerrard a new contract and he in return has accepted it.

No point in getting into any arguments about it.

Simon said...

Not sure how truthful it is but he said in an interview that he didn't want his career to end with him "sitting in the directors box wearing a suit", but while he was still playing and an important part of the team, not some old forgotten relic. Jamie isn't one to hide his real opinion so i'd take this as gospel.

Jaimie K said...

Who said anything about arguments? People have different views. Debate ensues. That's normal. Just because you disagree with the view espoused doesn't mean debate should be barred.

CARR71 said...

but if rodgers really wanted him to stay he could have convinced him ,if toure ends up being the only centerback we sign ,whos to say carragher would not have been an important part next season

Jaimie K said...

Yes, including me. It's a necessary evil. There are people constantly trying to spam the site, or post crap/lies etc about a variety of things. Today so far, 500+ spam/abusive posts have been caught by the word filter/mods. It's incessant. Without these systems in place, the comment section would be overrun with crap.

Niall O'Reilly said...

Carra said he wanted to retire last season....He was convinced to play one more season, last season so I don't see what you issue is,the man wanted to retire while he was still at a high level (The best performing defender at the club last year in fact,a great way to end it)

CARR71 said...

totally agree ,

CARR71 said...

and so did schoals but his manager managed to talk him round

Doron Snapiri said...

To be honest I'm scared to death about what will happen to the club once Stevie retires.

dantheman1986 said...

Carr71 why are you so negative all the time? You literally ruin conversations on here with negativity, why do you support Liverpool please answer the question?

CARR71 said...

gerrard will be the one player we have who other pros will look at and say i would like to play with him ,hes a great player ,when if,suarez goes we will lose the only other player we have with that kind of pulling power,we may have another in coutinho ,but lets face it he will want to move on as well if the big clubs come knocking ,if we do not improve

Max said...

Have you ever had the thought that we might be a better team without Suarez? That means playing as a team and not filtering everything through one player = Suarez.

CARR71 said...

lol so we are all supposed to be jumping through hoops because we sign four average players or maybe because of last seasons fantastic results or because our best players want to leave ,or maybe because you say so

CARR71 said...

no the thought never entered my mind infact lets get rid of all our good players and play as a team all be it an average team

Max said...

The team will be better off without a player who is still keen on staying in England and would consider going to another English club after. What happened to the comments of the UK media being the reason for him wanting to leave England.

He can leave for all I care. With the money we get from his sale we will easily replace his goals.

Nobody is bigger than the club.

Niall O'Reilly said...

Yes true but the difference is as Carra gets older he'll continue to lose pace,(whatever is left of it already) whereas Scholes being a midfielder declining pace would have much less effect on him because he'd always be able to pass the ball at his exceptional level, big difference

CARR71 said...

the hardest position you can play is central mid

LFC said...

So now what a man has to say is not enough. We have to dissect everything but am sure if he had straight said a negative comment it won't have the same reading between the lines right??

CARR71 said...

what as any of that got to do with anything, its all hear say ,whats it got to do with being a better team gerrard nearly signed for chelsea twice, maybe we would be a better team without him

Niall O'Reilly said...

Not when it comes to pace and how you can be exposed by having a lack of it,Scholes passing ability is something that wont fade as quickly as pace would with age,There's a massive difference between Carra and Scholes being able to play at their respective ages and you know it.

CARR71 said...

maybe gerrard was stating a fact if he had been 26 there is no way they would have let is contract run down that far

Simon said...

I understand your worry because at the end of this transfer window last year we had royally messed up, but considering who we have brought in since then and how early we have done our business then we ought to have a little patience. It's only 15 days into the window, plenty of time for new faces to arrive. Keep the faith.

Niall O'Reilly said...

Okay....where do I start? Four average players....where do you get that assumption from? Let me guess....the price,By that logic that would make Coutinho average as well.

CARR71 said...

sorry m8 but you need pace to get into position to be able to make the pass ,and atruly great defender reads the game and that gives him the extra few yards ,i played with a twenty stone center forward ,he had no pace but he was still the best goalscorer i ever played with is skill and brain made the difference

CARR71 said...

lol is every player going to turn out like coutinho no they are not,fsg got lucky and it seems as that is the only way they will go now, also coutinho has been brilliant so far ,but according to the commemtators against pne he was not that hot at milan, lets see how he dose next season before we build him up to be the next pele

Max said...

It has got everything to do with it.

Suarez is going to offer you a lucky packet when he leaves and will then just cause trouble at the next club he goes to.

We have shown that we do not need him in the team.

CARR71 said...

i see you have been busy voting lol,yes we hammered qpr and scored a hatful against everton fair enough we scored 3 against fulham and 6 against the worse newcasle side ,i have ever seen in my life, suarez is world class end of conversation

gilstrap said...

im glad the trainings hard...as we looked out of shape against some of the more physical and direct teams last year

CARR71 said...

make your mind up under which name your posting a find it amusing ,that some posters have numerous names, why would that be

CARR71 said...

? m8 do you know the coop tickets are the match tickets and meal tickets all in one or seperate

Max said...

No, he is his own worst enemy and LFC will be better off without him.

CARR71 said...

agree m8 if he had still been 27 they would not have done it ,they would not have risked him walking away for nothing,it seems they took is loyalty for granted but imo thats them all over

CARR71 said...

if you say so ,i say otherwise so there is no point carrying it on infact we disagree about everything ,so there is no point carrying that on either

Niall O'Reilly said...

Yes true but I still believe that you're gona be found out more as a centre back then a mid with a lack of pace,Like Scholes passing Carra's defensive reading and positional sense wouldn't diminish with age but he'd still be caught out with his pace, and as I said a CB is different to other positions,Right that centre forward was a big lump, like Carrol, its different when you're the one defending trying to catch up with someone.

Niall O'Reilly said...

Its called having a good scouting system in place,Dortmond do it all time, along with their exceptional academy

CARR71 said...

if you look at the great defenders they played to a fair few years older than carra ,berrasi maldini ,mathauis

CARR71 said...

we are not dortmond and we are not barca we are lfc ,just because they did it ,dose not mean we can or should rodgers users these clubs as eg and fans think we are going to be like them, dortmond have just spent 25 million on a player(one i would have liked to see at anfield ,its fair enough buying cheap young prospects but sometimes you have to get a few big guns in to

islesfan74 said...

Considering this interview was posted on the club's official website, I have a hard time believing that the clubs saw it as an attack. If they did, they wouldn't have posted it.

And the merciless sacking of Kenny Dalglish? Honestly, if they ever had to fire Kenny it would be an unpopular move because he's such a beloved person. It's the owners faults for putting themselves in that position where they didn't have what amounted to being any sort of exit strategy for a club icon. Odds are they had to bite the bullet on it at some point.

islesfan74 said...

We are not now. But that is the goal. Unrealistic? Maybe. But if we can start getting more hits than misses in the transfer window, we may be able to get there.

CARR71 said...

at least a season to early imo ,but now we are supposed to give rodgers for ever first 9 games will define our season if we are not top or at least very ,then we will definity not be there at the end of the season

Stevo said...

Carr71, i have to say after months and months of reading your low substance posts and very low intellectual argumentative views. You call yourself a Liverpool fan i have seen very little belief in any of your posts. BR el al are doing an outstanding job with the commodities they had/have considering 3 years ago we were on the shag heap nearing bankruptcy. I would love to see one positive comment from your good self from time to time but a gave up on that a long time ago. One word comes to mine when i read your posts BITTER.

SG was offered a contract he signed it FACT

JC was offered an extension on his contract he declined, FACT.

DecDec89 said...

I actually found that funny as ....... :)

CARR71 said...

bitter no thanks iam a lager man,and would they have let gerrard get down to 1 year on his contract if he was 27,no they would not have they played on his loyalty, and as for the comments i would like to read yours but i cannot because you hide who you are

CARR71 said...

see above

Niall O'Reilly said...

Yeah we are LFC...LFC who spent 100 million on dirt players...we could and should try to emulate Dortmund from their financial stand point,or rather elvolve it to suite us...and do you wanna know how they were able to afford HM? Being in the champions league,They didn't get in it by spending big

CARR71 said...

bit of humour, some people have lost there sence of humour

Max said...

Bill Shankly? I am not saying Rodgers is the next Shankly but Shankly was not the greatest manager when he came to us but he did not have to be the greatest. What was important is he made the fans believe in something even when we did not winning anything in his early years as our manager but in the end left a legacy.

I find it very difficult how you can be so negative towards this club. It is actually disgusting.

Stevo said...

Carr71 that was my 2nd ever post on this site, i am not here to argue with you fella, i would just like YOU as a so called Liverpool fan to be more positive on some topics within this forum, all i have read are of the negative nature (not a dig, just my view) and no i am not taking a snipe are you Sir!

islesfan74 said...

Regardless of whether you agree with the firing or not, my point was merely that there were only going to be two ways that Kenny would ever leave:

1. Retiring
2. Firing

And the odds are always going to be in favor of the latter as opposed to the former. Nature of the beast.

CARR71 said...

so what if we spent millions rodgers has a bigger net spend than kenny but we have not got any further infact i would say we are going backwards

CARR71 said...

i will be positive when we start showing some improvement till then it is the way it will be,and i do post positive comments but they are few and far between ,because the positives on the field are

Noelie said...

What's Gerrard on 8m a year??? It saddens me to read People who will never come close to earning this in a lifetime being angry at the owners for taking time to consider if Gerrard should be guaranteed another 2 years at the club.... I'm a massive fan of Gerrard but if this puts his nose out of joint maybe he should consider Chelsea for a third time..... By the way I don't buy it for a second JK trying to stir FSG controversy where there is none YNWA

Niall O'Reilly said...

The net spend is irrelevant!!! But sctually you'll use it to bash Rodgers and then you'll criticise them for not spending enough LMAO Which one is it jase? :)

DecDec89 said...

I for one totally agree with your point. The very fact that he mentioned it when it wasn't part of the interview, states it was already part of his thinking.
He is undoubtedly relieved that it has now been sorted and therefore does not have to deal with any awkwardness when asked about signing a potential new contract.
That relief, allied to an 'exciting' new season, points to the timing being 'spot on'.
But I definitely feel he felt a little peeved this was not sorted any earlier. Still, no big deal now that it has actually been done.
Now, who was that other chap we've been on about signing? Christian who?....

Niall O'Reilly said...

They're slightly a bit before my time so I cant really say much about them, well Baresi and Matthäus anyways.

islesfan74 said...

If you watch the second half of last season vs. the second half of Kenny's last season 18 months ago, there's no way an argument can be made that we are going backwards. After we won the Carling Cup in mid-February, the team couldn't win in the prem for the last three months of the season.

And if we extend the league record to January, it's even worse.

CARR71 said...

you use it to bash kennys buys

Niall O'Reilly said...

I bash the MONEY spent, not the net spend which is what you do.

islesfan74 said...

Because he spent too much!

Kenny had two excellent signings: Suarez and Bellamy.

The others could be seen as mediocre at best up to now, considering the amount of money spent.

liverpool4life565 said...

They spent 25 million yes but they got 37 million from gotze, so there were only spending money which came into there club, also the players we have brought are very good, as you saw on the weekend with aspas.

CARR71 said...

is that how you spell them lol

DecDec89 said...

perfect perspective. It's nice to read a little :)

CARR71 said...

and there is only one way rodgers will leave ,and my moneys not on him retiring

liverpool4life565 said...

You've got to admit tho, downing isn't worth 20 million. Hendo-isn't worth 20 million either, Carroll-35 million? 3 buys all over paid.

CARR71 said...

did i mention shankly no you jumped to your own inclusion ,and if its disgusting stop reading it and posting on my views simple

Max said...

He will deny it!

CARR71 said...

your entitled to your view

rah said...

excellent news now for an encore can we see stewart downings contract terminated please :)

CARR71 said...

hendo could well prove to be worth 20 million hes better than allen

rah said...

the way henderson is playing off late he proves he is worth 12m give him time he will be a 20 mill player imo

CARR71 said...

wold that be you sniping again max please read the comments update i would hate for you to get a ban over me ,

Max said...

It is not sniping.

Max said...

Nobody will pay us 20 million pounds for Henderson no matter how good he is.

rah said...

still cant believe we got 5 mill for shelvey and henderson is times the player he is ......u do the math :P

liverpool4life565 said...

Hendo made the same impact as Allen did in his first year, we will see how Allen does in his second. But he still isn't worth 20 million

CARR71 said...

lol but they will pay 30million for allen

liverpool4life565 said...

No, just no. If thiago from barca to bayern went for 22 million then hendo price is defo inflated.

Max said...

I never said that, you did...

CARR71 said...

and allen is not worth 15

liverpool4life565 said...

Agreed, but every managers goes back to there old club for players.

rah said...

everyone seems to hold thiago in very high regard if that is the case why hasnt he got a senior spain call up or why hasnt tito villanova retained him ??? i admit he is talented but i think it stops at talent there is nothing very much extraordinary about him

CARR71 said...

look m8 lets just stop posting each other you do not like me ,and you bore me ,so i would not like a ban because of you ,i will not reply to anymore of your posts

liverpool4life565 said...

Have you seen Spain's midfield?? Not even mata and silva can get into there first eleven. Also Tito did want to retain him. But thiago wanted first team....

Max said...

We got 5 million for Shelvey because he is young and English.

Anyway, there is no way in hell we will recoup our money on Henderson.

CARR71 said...

would that be same spanish midfield that got trouced against the argies ,there time is coming to an end m8 just like barcas

rah said...

yeah but del bosque makes it a point to give new blood a chance during pointless friendlies .....thats how jordi alba got a look in ........ also i would like to point out (irrevelant to thiago ) that henderson has a great engine on him and thus can press players better than most mids just give him some time

Max said...

Do not tell me what to do.

rah said...

thats out for debate mate there are always desperate poeple out there ;)

CARR71 said...

i am not telling you what to do its a suggestion ,my last post to you

Max said...

That is why West ham were only willing to pay 15 million for Carroll and we were very lucky that they were being that generous.

rah said...

oh yeah hendo was bought for 16m with 4 in add ons so u might want to base ur arguments on he isnt woth 16 m :P

Max said...

So do not reply to me when I reply to you.

Easy.

Max said...

You obviously did not get the point I was trying to make.

islesfan74 said...

Odds are that he will be fired. That's just the business. SAF is the exception, not the rule.

islesfan74 said...

I wouldn't completely write off Hendo just yet in terms of what he'll eventually be worth.

But suffice it to say, we overspent on him.

Sean Haughian said...

id say thats the main point of him being so peeved off. I dont think there is any doubt Stevie was annoyed. When you are captain of a club for so long you kind of own in in your head if you know what i mean. I think it was clearly a dig at fsg, he has been down the road of clueless owners before. Stevie still has the tools and if he thinks other people are not seeing his value he is going to be annoyed. The other point of course is that it covers the cracks of the failed mickey deal so the timing seems a little to spot on. anyway we have him for another two years at least. I really dont know how i will cope the day he retires. Watching liverpool wont be the same for quite some time after (for me personally anyway) .

On another point im hopefull for the signings so far id love it we could get erikson before anything happens with suarez.

Then use the full 50 to buy another striker and a center half. Suarez must also be sold out of premiership, to sell to another english team would be pure stupidity. If they sell for less than 50 as well they need shot. No dollar no sale. id be happy to keep him for one more season and sell for 15 less.

Aspas took the 9 shirt which i was surprised about, havent seen anything of him beyond the youtube clips so he must be decent enough.

Cant wait for football to come back yeeeoooooo!!

Daniel Agger under Hodgson? Ok please tell me when your heard SG raving about a RH training session or whether he felt he improved him as a player. Jase I'm not talking about criticising the manager - more the praise for his methods. No one here will doubt SG is world class. I'd argue that under rafas guidance he truly made that step up. For someone world class, 32 years old to still be learning new ideologies of playing football to me speaks volumes for those who doubted BR had the credentials. Almost every player says they do more ball work. The Spanish players say its more European. You can see on the pitch how we dominate teams with our football. I rate but hate David Moyes - it will be interesting to see how world class players adapt to his training methods - will it be a forward or backward step. My point is I think BR is a leap forward for us in our current predicament.

Jamie said...

Re Sahin Doesn't surprise me if a player complains about his position in the team - quite normal I guess - he chose to come to us in the first place prob due to style of play - or we living off reputation lol? And as for Carra - please!!!

LFC is the 10th richest club in the world, the 5th richest in England, just 29m Euros behind Man City.

Lol pretty harsh! So guess I can continue to take pops at Jase as he can't reply lol - just teasing JC

Jamie said...

Are you planning an assassination lool

JJ said...

I love Kenny Dalglish, but the sacking of him was the right decision. I can't imagine what mess we would have been in, if he was allowed to continue another year.

Jamie said...

I agree!

forceuk said...

Yeah, and in a two car race between a Borgatti and a Ford Cortina the Cortina would come second. My point is, it doesn't matter what our financial clout is in the grand scheme of things, we still can't compete with City, United, Chelsea even Arsenal in the current climate.

I think using emoticons should count towards a reduction in ban time

I don't normally post.. and JC will confirm that.. but I have to say Mr Carr, you are the most negative person I have ever seen on any forum.. being a Liverpool supporter for the last 32 years I find your posts depressing and at best negative, I don't understand why you have so little faith in everything the club does.. it's not perfect and the Hicks and co debacle nearly put the club into administration. And you really need to take on board that things take time.. You can't buy 30 million rated players if you don't have cl football, you need to build on the 1st team and the youth.. and trust me we have some good players coming from the academy, I'll eat your hat (not mine i love that hat) if Jordan Rossiter doesn't make the first team in two years and is a regular to boot, but more than that help the cause and
lighten up hun.. there is more to life than football, and truly you need to stop looking at the negatives all day, can't be good for your soul xxx

look at the way Carra and Agger got destroyed by Lukaka and Benteke last season and Drogba before that. As soon as they come up against power and pace they crumbled. This has been happening for far too long. I'd personally like to see Agger and Skrtel moved on as well and make way for some modern athletes who will not wilt when the opposition have a powerhouse man mountain up top. The way we dropped off to defend the 6 yard box when we played the afore mentioned strikers was embarrasing.

On the whole Carra did impress me when he came back into the side, but he made the right decision in retiring. good luck to him.

Theycallmemrburt said...

Sahin was gutted to sign for us in the first place! Did you see his face at his 1st press conference? He made it clear he was gutted to be moving from Madrid and would only be here for the season. His attitude transfered onto the pitch.

Johnny Starrs said...

I would take the Cortina over a Borgatti anytime. How ever if it was a Bugatti, well then thats a different issue.

Johnny Starrs said...

Merciless, ??? the guy took us back 5 years. With his ridiculous waste of money.
What a player he was,
but the signings he made were unforgivable. End of.

Adam Griffin said...

You know I'm not sure I agree with this distinction between LFC and FSG. When we're talking about contract negotiations we're talking absolutely about the club, not the parent owning company. I think some fans like to remove FSG from LFC, as if we can blame them for things but not sully the name of our beloved Liverpool. It's like we can say that LFC is not really owned by FSG, they're just borrowing it, and if something goes wrong we blame them and leave "the club" as some kind of other-worldly entity that could simply never do anything wrong. I don't think it's valid. Whatever has happened here it has happened between the club and Gerrard. So if Gerrard has made a criticism then it's a criticism of the club.

Sure, it's a particular semantic distinction, but it's fans who are making this distinction in the first place, not me. We seem to simply dislike the idea of saying "the club are not spending enough on transfers" or "Liverpool are treating players in this way" or "LFC blah blah blah". We much prefer to blame someone external, particularly someone we can identify as foreign and new. But in fact it's the truth of the situation to say that whatever people do in this regard, they do on behalf of the club, not FSG. When there are contract negotiations it is done on behalf of the club. When we spend money, it goes against the club financials. When Henry makes a decision about a direction we need to go or an action we need to take then he does so as the owner of the club, not a representative of FSG. Ayre is GM of Liverpool Football Club, not an employee of FSG.

Johnny Starrs said...

The fans never signed a player, Shankly did.

Johnny Starrs said...

At this time, Ayre is expendible, FSG are not. Get it.?

Adam Griffin said...

He's expendable, but everything he does right now is on behalf of the club, in the name of the club. It makes little difference to say that Arye did something than to say LFC did something. Right now, as GM, he is the face of the club in terms of the business we do. If he does something stupid then the club does something stupid. We can't get away from that. It's still LFC.

rah said...

heavens be praised for that XD

after seeing how lanky sterling was i still say we are gonna get bullied about by the stronger teams and god allen looks like he is an anoerexic ......dont fancy him in cdm role at all

rah said...

there is every chance we couldnt have been in any mess ...... suarez was woeful in front of the goal and take into account the number of shots that hit the post ......if all of them became goals we would have finished 5th also carroll was startng to show some form

rah said...

benteke to totenham jovetic to city higuain to arsenal .......... if we are selling suarez can we hurry up with it please all the good strikers are getting sold and at this rate we may end up with no replacement

DeveshChil said...

Yeah, this time they really did hurt my sentiments. Gerrad is somebody who symbolizes LFC and its spirit and above all I became a fan of LFC just because of Gerrad TBH.

DeveshChil said...

Yeah, I know what you mean but am just trying to be over-hyper-optimist ;) People also call it being deluded :P

Karim Govani said...

I love Steven Gerrard, he is my second favourite player to ever wear the shirt (my first is John Barnes and third is Fernando Torres). But we will never win a league title with him in the side. The LFC team relies too heavily on SG when he is in the team. The amount of times in his 15 year career he has single handedly saved us from defeat or turned a draw into a win is phenomenal. But the other players need to raise their standards. I suggest we sell Suarez for £40m and find a new number 8 with the money and slowly phase SG out of our side.

RussLFC said...

Your saying you need pace to play in central midfield or your no good......... What about Jan Molby then I watched him play for LFC for years and the guy hardly broke sweat, he let his ability in passing the ball do the running for him m8! Surely as a footballer yourself, you have heard the expression....... "Let the ball do the work"????

My point was that it wasn't merciless. If anything, it was inevitable.

the landscape has changed, loyalty is fading fast. if fsg are ruthless and it brings success, who would realistically turn it down in exchange for not upsetting our well paid heroes? i have taken my nostalgic rose tinted glasses off and i want them to be ruthless. we have been the butt of jokes over the last few seasons and i've had enough. if fsg dithered over st. stevie, i would not have complained too heavily if they hadn't of given another contract. as long as they get it right, so be the unpopular decisions.

Gaz said...

Where has he said that he wants a move to an English club? Supposedly Arsenal have had bids rejected and Chelsea are showing an interest, but nowhere has it reliably been said that Suarez is interested in a move to another English club.

Gaz said...

How is JC being negative this time? Yes, I agree, JC has some negative views, but he is actually saying that we would be worse off, at least initially without Suarez. Suarez, who had the most productive season he has had possibly ever, who is at the top of his game, of course we would be worse without him, any club would. Despite his indiscretions, he is world class and at close quarters, there is arguably no player better than he is. We are better off with Suarez in the team, no one can deny that.

Gaz said...

To be fair, any signing has an element of luck to it. We could have signed Mkhitaryan for 25m and he could have been an absolute flop, at least if a player is a flop at 8m, we have a better chance of recouping our money or even making a profit.

Gaz said...

In the second half of the season, where we were at top 4 pace, Downing was one of our most consistent and best performers, we need to keep him on. People complain about us having no depth in the squad and then want us to sell off our players that aren't as good as people would like.

I like how you have completely written off coutinho sturridge and Henderson. :)

Gaz said...

Not at all, in fact, I have a Coutinho 10 shirt, however your comment was aimed towards Downing and so my response was also aimed towards Downing. If we are going to talk about Coutinho, Sturridge and Henderson, then Coutinho is a world class talent who is well on his way to becoming a world class player, Sturridge looks to be finally at a club where he can fulfil his potential, and the only Englishman in the same age bracket as Henderson who is better than he is is Jack Wilshere, that has to say something.
