LFC Liar: Nicol blasts Reds star for 'lying all along' to gullible fans. Harsh or Fair...?

The Luis Suarez transfer saga rumbles on, and with pre-season already in full swing, the Uruguayan is still ignoring Brendan Rodgers' direction to refrain from talking about club business in public. Suarez has repeatedly argued that he wants to leave England completely, but his response to Arsenal's interest suggests otherwise, and Reds legend Steve Nicol as accused the striker of 'lying' about his intentions.

Arsenal have allegedly made a £30m bid for Suarez, and in an interview on Tuesday, the striker once again disrespected Liverpool's long-running loyalty and offered the Gunners a kernel of hope that a deal might be possible. He told Uruguayan radio station Sport 890:

“It’s good to know that I am still valued by teams like Arsenal. There have been no offers yet, but Liverpool know exactly what is going on and what I want.

"My agent is in charge, he knows what I want, I am resting and relaxed. A phone call could change everything.”

Suarez could've kept his mouth shut, but once again, he chose to spit in LFC's face and prostitute himself out to yet another club.

Clearly, in the absence of a concrete bid from Real Madrid, the Uruguayan is keeping his options open, and he's sent a very clear message to Arsenal that deal could be done. After all, a 'phone call is all it takes'.

Responding to this latest bout of shameless self-promotion, Nicol accused the striker of being less than truthful about his intentions. He told ESPN:

"Basically, he [Suarez] has been caught up in telling a lie. He obviously thought that Real Madrid were interested, but now it looks like [they] aren't coming for him he’s beginning to change his tune, and that tells you he was lying all along".

He also warned that Liverpool fans are growing tired of Suarez's antics:

"Liverpool fans are beginning to go the other way. People backed him, and understood that his wife wasn’t happy, and he didn’t like England. They fell for that whole story, but the more he talks now, the more he’s losing that support".

I don't agree that Suarez 'was lying all along' about his intentions. That suggests a level of machiavellian deception that (IMO), does not generally fit with his character. Indeed, whatever the veracity of Suarez's reasoning, I'm sure he genuinely does want to leave England.

However, in the absence of movement from Real Madrid, he's faced with the option of another year without Champions League football, but Arsenal can offer that, which is obviously enticing.

Having said that, I sincerely doubt the sincerity of Arsenal's 'offer'. Liverpool have made it clear that Suarez is not leaving for anything less than £40m, and only a fool would submit a bid for £30m and expect it to be accepted.

As such, if Wenger actually made a bid, he probably did so specifically to have it rejected, hence the lowball tactics. Why would he do this?

* A negotiation tactic to put pressure on Real Madrid to sell Gonzalo Higuain.
* Appease the fanbase by making it look like Arsenal are ready to spend big money.

Arsenal have not officially confirmed or denied the Suarez bid, but I'd be very surprised if Wenger is stupid enough to risk such a huge amount of money on a player who practically guarantees controversy. Wenger wants Higuain, and he's (possibly) using Suarez to get him.

As for fans losing their support for Suarez - A small percentage, perhaps, but from where I'm standing, his rabid worshippers remain convinced he's some kind of inalienable messiah, and they will not be swayed.

We need to play with him , we have insurance with aspas and brini we can force him or keep him till the end until someone pays 60m, he will go on strike but i dont care dont want him getting his way the player power needs to end.

Tottenham done it with modric in 2011/12

we need to restraint and selll him when it suits us rather then him

modric flirted worse with chelsea
ronaldo everyweek told us about his real madrid dream as did cesc with barca

Just get rid of him now. As long as its not for another English team I don't care.

I would rather we buy Erikssen, people forget if Suarez leaves we will have Sturridge Borini Aspas and Alberto

Its up to other clubs to also show him that his disciplinary record and off field actions will knock his value.
As a Gooner my football side says he is world class and would jump at the chance to have him, but then my brain says he is a classless nerk and will cause so much damage to the club.
LFC dont need his type IMHO

CARR71 said...

maybe he was stating a fact ,that arsenal have placed a bid for him ,and it proves what i always thought he has not damaged the reputation of lfc as much as you try to make out jaimie,or are arsenal and chelsea blind to that, suarez will not sign or hand in a transfer request for another english club ,unless the powers that be want him out to cash in on him

Boss said...

LFC is at fault too..... they r just letting him speak to get their 40 mill.

Karim Govani said...

Higuain to Arsenal and then Suarez to Real Madrid. Its obvious. its also obvious this deal will be done as close to the transfer deadline as possible to create more headlines.

Jaimie K said...

How can Suarez be stating a fact that Arsenal have bid for him when he states 'there are no offers yet' ?

Chelsea would buy Pol Pot and play him up front if he was half decent.

Karim Govani said...

Borini needs to stay fit.. Aspas and Alberto are unknown. I would rather we sell suarez and bring in a reputable goalscorer who can help ease Aspas and Alberto into the Premier League. Call me strange or an idiot but why not buy Defoe and Bent ? Both score shed load of goals and both will have points to prove. We can also get them on the cheap, which gives us more money to spend on other areas.

HazeyMatt said...

I agree, He's obviously stated he wants to leave but it can be said that he only complimented arsenal and didnt send them a clear message.
If he's here come out 7th game then ill be happy, if he leave i hope we get a good pay day :P

CARR71 said...

but we all know arsenal have made a bid ,he probably like me dismissed arsenals bid as absurd

Andrew Thorp said...

I can't say I told you so as I have not posted about Suarez, but for me it was all cow pooh this 'media hates me'. He's after a move for the money and it looks like he doesn't care where it's too.
If he doesn't get his move, he'l either do a Tevez and disappear or get himself banned for biting Brendan's Jack Ruasells back leg
Get the right money £45m and get rid of the cheat, he's a liability.
Fangs for nothing Luis.

martincork said...

sell him as fast as we can then buy wanyama and Jackson martinez, its a no brainer, lets get martinez into the top 5 strikers in the world list just as we did with torres and saurez,

As long as the money is reinvested in men that are more likely than not ready to contribute immediately, rather than speculative punts that are probably a year or two from being ready to contribute at a high level, then I'm more happy to see Suarez moved on asap.

Hopefully LFC are actively negotiating his transfer behind closed doors, and looking for replacements simultaneously, rather than twiddling thumbs waiting for Madrid to step in at the last minute...

What on God's good earth are people in the media smoking? To call the above quote a paraphrase is like calling Harry Potter a documentary about Prince Harry's days at Eton. It's a complete and utter pile of nonsense. Suarez does not ONCE mention Arsenal directly in his interview. He's asked a question about the offer and he simply says that it was surprising to hear. He then goes on to answer another direct question about it being good to be wanted by English teams as opposed to just teams from other countries. His response, if I may myself paraphrase in the spirit of this idiotic story, is to say that yes, it is good to know that teams in England see him as a potentially valuable asset. He effectively says that it's nice to have important teams in England look beyond his bad press and still consider him as a footballer. He says maybe he could have a future in England if such an attitude still exists.

The quote above is simply not real. Luis Suarez has NEVER said "it's good to know that I am still valued by teams like Arsenal". The fully quoted sentence is a paraphrase of two separate responses by Suarez to two separate questions. None of it is real. Of course that doesn't bother Nicol, he's a gossip and a pundit who writes provocative garbage to try and sell papers. This is disgraceful journalism, English football press at it's absolute worst. I'd suggest JK get a slap on the wrist for forwarding on this trash but of course he's just re-quoting someone else. You would hope that someone in the chain of events would stop and actually make sure those quotes are genuine, but then why ruin a potentially interesting story in the interest of facts or truth?

Your wrong in your disrespectful assessment of the Liverpool fan base. As a Life long Liverpool fan I can assure you we are not rabid or stupid. Like any player in any squad if the price is right than he can go. We stand to make a sizable profit on this player and that will be invested in the next "Suarez" or "Torres" or "Dalglish or Rush or Barns." Players come and go, always have and always will. Why would you think that just because we support Liverpool we wouldn't understand that?

IF real Madrid wants him simple pay over 50mil .
The media spin is enough .

Adam Griffin said...

Obviously enough he wants to leave, but we can push him to stay and we don't have to sell on the cheap. He's got too long left on his contract to force the club to do anything. I simply assume that we'll demand 50 million pounds and that's the end of it. Stay and play or go and we get paid.

This is the absolute worst kind of semantic revisionism; a whole flurry of fire and brimstone designed to muddy the waters and detract from the real issue.

The paraphrase is absolutely fair.

FACT: Suarez was specifically asked about the Arsenal interest. Suarez responded by saying that it's good to know he's valued by teams in England. There is a direct causal link between the question and the answer; he is specifically referring to Arsenal here, so the end result is the same.

I just love how when it comes to Suarez, everything has to be 1000% literal, and people conveniently forget the context of the discussion.

Irrespective of the *exact* wording Suarez stated that he is glad that teams like Arsenal value him. Arsenal is a team 'in England', is it not?

English press at it's 'worst'? Ridiculously overwrought exaggeration. The Telegraph/Guardian etc printed the same quotes I've used, and they did so because the paraphrase is 100% accurate.

Jonathan Hansom said...

Then quickly find a Chelsea player and Bite him!

Jaimie K said...

Exactly! Fans will read between the lines in a heartbeat when it's a player they dislike, but when it's one of their favourites, everything has to be interpreted 100% literally, which is totally at odds with how life actually works.

No, that's your interpretation. If I meant majority, I would've stated it.

I am not defending Suarez in this but i want to pick out a particular thing you said. In your comment you mentioned how if it was Enrique or Henderson doing these things people wouldn't have time for it. Can you not argue that the reason this happens is because Suarez is a more important asset and has also serviced the club better in terms of attacking contribution?

rowanb said...

We need to stand firm. he's already said he'll stay if proper offer doesn't come in and that's good enough for me.
Loyalty is an over rated concept, would YOU turn down a bigger better job for more money and success should it come your way?
While luis is clearly not the sharpest tool in the box, he is just another footballer who wants to win some silverware and make sure his family are happy.
This moral high ground is ridiculous. Far worse things are going on every second but the racist FA like to put down johnny foreigner more than his substandard english equivalent.

50m and or top quality players in part ex or he stays IMO.

Rossa AFC said...

As an Arsenal fan, all I can say is I wouldn't want him. He is great player, but one nasty individual. He is treating Liverpool badly after they have stood by him through all of his antics.
A horrible vicious, biting, racist man. If he was a dog he would have been put down by now!
Liverpool should get shot of him and get someone in who deserves to play for your club.

Great post Adam! Jamie is a journalist as well. The more sensationalist the article, the more people read it, regardless of the content. You could easily put together any sentense you desired from anyone to manipulate your own bias from the words people speak at different times in relation to different questions.

Maybe we could have a full transcript of the interviews from Suarez rather than little soundbites?

Jamie said...

Excuse me Jonathon may I step in and take this dance! As I think Jaime is referring to me lol! I think loyalty in football is sometimes overstated - I personally expect Suarez to stay - but if an acceptable bid comes in - then yes let him go as thats what he wants.

How much loyalty did the club show spearing - a homegrown loyal player who would have loved to stay and fight for his place - in reality is he's not a good enough - which is in reality what 'loyalty' comes down to. I can't fault Suarez really, as a fan I'm not happy, but both sides can alter their 'loyalties' at any moment - ask Alonso...

Me staying 'loyal' to Suarez through his incidents is due to what he brings to my club. Based on the good/bad sides of LS - to me the positives outweigh the negatives, I wouldn't say that makes me 'irrational'

rowanb said...

Do you understand rodgers tactics? Benteke is 1-a cart horse with skill, 2- a player who is currently doing the same thing as Luis and completely disrespecting his break through club 3-not suited to rodgers tactics.

liverpool4life565 said...

Yes I do understand his tactics, but benteke has more to his game than his strength and heading skills. How can you say he not suited?

Kopite S said...

i'd take muriel for 12M and then get benteke for £18M. altogether that is 30M. for a player mentioned in the same breath as fat ronaldo, and a player who on top form is not too far off dider drogba. id taake both happily. im sure as well they would push on the club to different heights. only problem is we would have aspas, alberto, muirel, sturridge and benteke all competing for forward roles. but surely fierce competition can only be a good thing

Jaimie, I agree with the majority of what you wrote here.

The only thing I will say is that I don't think Suarez is being genuine in his "interest" in going to Arsenal. I think it's merely a negotiating ploy to try and get Real Madrid to step up quickly.

The guy wants to leave England... I think we can all agree on that. I thinkh e's just trying to use Arsenal as a pawn to help him leave England.

Jaimie K said...

That makes sense. Good point.

Eric said...

Now, I think it's well documented that I've been defending Suarez and I stick by everything I've said in the past few months. I also find it interesting how his words about English clubs still appreciating him got changed in this article which further shows JK's bias and hypocrisy regarding Suarez. All that said, his comments about everything can change with a phonecall are bang out of order imo. Basically what he's saying is that he wants to leave but no one has seriously come in for him yet and that, if they do, he wants to leave. I still understand that he wants to and that he wants to leave for personal reasons rather than money and trophies, but he should be up front about it then. He should simply say:" I want to leave, these are my reasons, I will not sign for another English club and that's the end of that." That will give FSG and Rodgers plenty of time to find reserves players to waste his transfer proceedings on.

rowanb said...

Im not guessing this, im pretty sure about it from all ive heard from those who know football deeply.
If we had been able to get gim for 7m as villa did, OK, but for what villa are quoting price wise, and what is coming out of bentekes mouth, there is 0 chance of him joining us.
That is aside from the fact that he does not suit the spain model of play.

'Bias and hypocrisy'? Utter nonsense. Just because you disagree doesn't make it hypocrisy. Every respected news provider reported the same quotes (Telegraph/Guardian/BBC etc), so why shouldn't I? The essence of what Suarez is saying remains the same: he was asked about Arsenal, he responded; just because he didn't use the word 'Arsenal' doesn't mean his statement magically takes on a different meaning.

CARR71 said...

no i will just refuse to shake hands lol

islesfan74 said...

Part of it is certainly that Suarez is more in the limelight because of his talent.

But I also believe a major part of it is that he was treated differently by the English press because he's not from Europe.

After all, there have been multiple people who have each done individual actions similar to Suarez (Terry Racism, Bale Diving, Neville handball, Huth Stomping on Suarez's chest, etc.). But Suarez was treated differently in each case than any of those.

The worst to me is the treating differently than Terry... they essentially committed the same act... Suarez was punished first (rightfully so), and Terry was given half the punishment 6 months later.

Obviously Suarez committing all these acts alone is a major problem. I just wish he'd own up to his actions instead of trying to blame the media for persecuting him. In the end, he puts himself in a position with his actions where the media has an opportunity to persecute him.

Mike Aitcheson said...

I don't know how many times we are going to have this same conversation.
When it suits, you stick rigidly to the specific quotes and dismiss interpretation as being unreliable. When it doesn't , you make a value judgement as does everybody else, then claim your conclusion is if not irrefutable, then one which any balanced person would come to- to not do so means one is a rabid apologist or blinkered fan.
The likelihood that Suarez will leave does NOT excuse an equally one-eyed view of the actual things said.
In your case this is driven by your dislike of Suarez as a whole. In the papers/media, it's just SALES/CLICKS....

Gano1 said...

Go and boil you're head.

islesfan74 said...

I just read the exact quote:

The way that he said it, while referring to Arsenal (without saying "Arsenal"), seemed to be more appreciative of the fact that despite all the controversy of what's happened with him in his time in England, there are still other teams in England that would want him.

Not something that I would want him to say anyway... but it seems that what he's trying to get at is that other English teams may agree with him that he's not that bad of a guy.

That's just the way I'm reading it now that I've read the actual quote.

Whether people agree with him or not is another story in and of itself.

Jaimie K said...

'Context' here is used in an entirely different way, i.e. nothing to do with the questions Suarez was asked, but related to his actual answer (which has the same meaning irrespective of the use of the word 'Arsenal')

Mike Aitcheson said...

is there a hyperlink to the original interview Jamie? You usually do that?

Jaimie K said...

Suarez received double the ban because of aggravating factors. The Fa report states this. Terry said what he did once; Suarez - according to the FA - repeatedly used the word 'Negro' to attack Evra, and that is the aggravating factor.

There's no evidence to prove Suarez said it more than once (he admitted it in a witness statement), but the burden of proof is such that it was easy for the FA to 'convict' him of the other 'alleged' uses.

Additionally, Terry was clearer in a court of law, which has a higher burden of proof.

imoff said...

we should just probably state that Luis is not for sale but if any1 wants his services will need to pay 50-60 M tops

Mike Aitcheson said...

And my main point?

Jaimie K said...

The main interview is in Spanish, and it's an audio file, so there's no point linking to it.

With Suarez, there's always this zeal to try and find some escape route out of his obvious touting, but it just won't wash. All interpretations are essentially the same. What he should've done is declined to speak about his future, as directed by Rodgers. That he failed to do this *again* is a sign of massive disrespect to LFC.

If Suarez kept his mouth shut, there would be no chance of miscommunication, would there? Plus, he is on HOLIDAY, so why is he giving interviews?

Jaimie K said...

You're entitled to your opinion, and I don't have the time to refute it.

Adam Griffin said...

No, you're quite wrong in this instance, and the problem is obviously that you haven't sourced the original interview. Suarez was asked a question about the team being interested in him being English, not like Madrid or PSG. The context (yes, it is important) of the discussion is no longer Arsenal, it's entirely about the nationality of the teams potentially courting him. Suarez not only refers to teamS and clubS (note the plural) in England valuing him as a player, he never specifically mentions Arsenal at all. He simply says that it's good to know that at least some clubS in England value him as a footballer and (now my own interpretation ...) can see past the bad press. The actual response he gives in the actual interview makes this completely clear.

That's the problem with paraphrase JK, it's not an accurate source to being with. Even to infer from the quoted paraphrase that it's an attempt to encourage Arsenal is a stretch, requiring someone to "read between the lines". So we have to read between the lines of a quote constructed quite artificially from multiple responses to multiple different questions. You don't see a problem with that? Take a quote out of context, reconstruct it, put it together with other quotes in a new order, then make an inference based on that reconstruction ... you don't see the problem here? That multiple journalists make the same mistake doesn't make it better, it just backs up the message that English (and European) football media is really quite awful.

Here's a challenge for you ... go and find a transcript of the actual interview and provide for us the actual real quotes that correspond to the paraphrase above. I quite seriously dare you to. The actual real responses and the context in which they are presented is just so thoroughly out of step with the paraphrase, it's not even close. Still, that's the work of an actual journalist, and if the major news outlets can't be bothered doing it then I can hardly expect you to try it.

I'm not saying he isn't touting. I'm saying that many including yourself are predisposed to taking anything he says in a certain way. As blinkered in your own way as the uber apologists. Neither are correct imo.
Could you imagine the headlines if Suarez said how much he misses the Champions League nights? Cue more Nichol, and more JK. We all know Suarez is a disloyal ungrateful so and so, whoring himself shamelessly right?
Except it was Bale who said it, just last week. Not seen him called a whore yet though

I don't need to find a transcript because I've listened to the interview, and the interviewer very clearly asks him about Arsenal. This is irrefutable fact. Here is an audio file of the interview:

http://chirb.it/nLC3dA

At 12:13, he clearly states 'Arsenal'.

This pedantry is such a gigantic waste of time. The paraphrase is accurate, and Suarez's intention is clear. As per usual, you and other Suarez apologists are trying to change the conversation by muddying the waters. He was asked about Arsenal; his reply is about Arsenal. End of story.

islesfan74 said...

To be clear, they were both dead wrong for what they did.

And they should have received the same ban. If Suarez got 8, so should have Terry. That's all I'm saying.

I actually believe the FA handled the Terry situation correctly, and mishandled the Suarez situation. They let all the facts come out for Terry. I felt the rushed the Suarez case. They just should have punished Terry the same as they punished Suarez.

That's all I'm saying.

Jaimie K said...

Sorry, bit that's totally untrue. If all Suarez had said over the last month was 'I miss the CL', I wouldn't have even covered it. That is totally different to trying to engineer a move to Real Madrid.

My mind still wth club but is the club wth me???? Well I posted a link to one of the translations that have been put out there, I guess it's as good as any other.

No one disputes that he was asked about Arsenal but look at the transcript and you'll see the conversation. When he's asked that one question directly about Arsenal he makes a joke and starts to laugh. Is that how football players court potential teams? They make a joke about the offer that was made? That's not how he speaks of Madrid.

It's the subsequent question that really has very little to do with Arsenal except to say that they are an English football team. The interview question is quite obviously about the nationality of the teams he is being chased by because the most publicised aspect of all of this is that Suarez is unhappy in England. So of course it's a talking point that an English team are interested, but Suarez's response is quite general and vague. He says very clearly that it's good that English clubs in general are interested in him. That's all. If he was talking about Arsenal and was interested in playing for them, why wouldn't he just come out and say so? He's been completely honest and straightforward so far, saying VERY clearly that he'd be happy to play for Madrid, so why not also say that it would be nice to play for Arsenal?

It's because he's not taking the Arsenal offer seriously. The entire interview is full of him making fun of the rumours and the speculation except for those potential 2-3 teams he has identified for himself as possible. He even directly makes a joke about the Arsenal offer. I don't disagree that he could simply keep his mouth shut and say nothing, of course he could, but the idea that he's actively displaying himself to Arsenal is total nonsense.

DeveshChil said...

I don't care wherever he goes even if to a BPL team but then we should be paid 60million and that money should be spent as wisely as possible rather than getting last minute inflated replacements that BR doesn't even play.

islesfan74 said...

Thank you for posting.

After reading through it, the majority of the interview seems to be non-LFC related. More focused on Uruguay.

But nonetheless, he doesn't make any sort of statement of support for continuing with Liverpool.

It sounds more like a "If you want me, come and get me" when he's referring to a potential transfer. It's really not much more than what he's said in the past.

I still wish he'd just shut up already.

I was pleased to at least see that he wasn't playing the victim of the press. He acknowledged that a lot of it was his own doing.

Every chance you can get to put Suarez in a negative light, you take it. Sometimes it is justified. Sometimes it isn't.

With this whole Real Madrid thing, I think you have been 100% justified with your position.

But I find it difficult to believe that given your dislike for Suarez being on Liverpool, if all he said was something like "I want to go play Champions League football for (insert team here)", you would still have jumped on him for it.

Nei1y said...

Listen, Liverpool sold their soul, on a player, who although is world class, is trouble with a capital T. He has no reason to be loyal to Liverpool. And that makes the club look even more silly, with the way they have backed him. He has now made noises toward staying in England, so who can beleive a word he says. If he simply came out and gave the lack of champions league football as an excuse, people would understand.

norton said...

the writer is wrong, on the forum i go on, suarez is not liked 1 bit!

Jaimie K said...

No, that is just not true. During Evra-gate, I defended Suarez in greater depth and detail than any website/newspaper/news provider on the planet. If I place him in a negative light 'every chance I get', I would've capitalised on that situation and stuck the knife in.

I just tell it like I see it, and for the last year, Suarez has been involved in countless negative incidents, culminating in his current flirtation with Real Madrid.

As I've explained many times on the site, there are certain key principles that underline the approach of this site, and one of those is emphasising the importance of the club over the individual. Whenever anything happens that (IMO) damages the reputation/standing of LFC, I highlight it, and that means Suarez is constantly on the rack. And so he should be.

Slipperie_Slope said...

There are three things starting to worry me about this transfer.
1. Realistically Suarez cannot be in a Liverpool next season. Too much water has gone under the bridge. Between the disciplinary issues and the statements to the media his position has become untenable.
2. We cannot sell him to a rival, at any price(bar 100mil) and Arsenal are the only top PL club in for a striker at the moment.
3. Going on Madrids previous Galactico signings under Perez, i'm not really sure that madrid want suarez that much. All their previous big signings are leaked before the transfer window and signed within two weeks of it opening (Figo, Zidane, Ronaldo, Beckham, cRonaldo, Kaka, Benzema). My point being i think if they were willing to pay 40mil then i think they would have payed it by now.

So we will either be left with a player who does not want to be here and has ostrised himself from much of his team mates im sure, or we will get a good price for him from a direct competitor, or we sell at cut price to Real. Either scenario is a poor outcome for LFC.

I dont think suarez was lying when he said he wanted to leave liverpool, i think it was a direct attempt to get to madrid. If i was a true conspiracy theorist i'd say himself, ayre, and wenger had a conference call the night before, only thing is i'm not sure the tactic is working....

Andrew said...

Agree with points 1 and 3 but what planet are you living on? Arsenal are not the only top prem club looking for a transfer, City are in desperate need of one if not two strikers and Chelsea are sniffing around for a striker big time. If I was to put money on it I think he might go to City

Eric said...

Haha no but it does mean he didn't say Arsenal...He said:""It's good to know that after everything that's happened, teams in England still value me as a footballer." What you're doing is like saying "JK thinks Luis Suarez is the best thing since sliced bread" Well that's not quite what you said but hey...

Jaimie K said...

This pedantry is embarrassing. If someone asked me 'What do you think of Luis Suarez', and I replied 'He is an amazing player', could it then be argued that I wasn't referring to Suarez? Of course not. The very idea is ridiculous. If someone then paraphrased me and said 'JK thinks Suarez is the best thing since sliced bread', then that would be fair.

The lengths Suarez apologists go to in their zeal to defend him is truly something to behold. Suarez was asked about Arsenal; he said it's good to be valued by English teams , i.e. Arsenal. End of story. The only reason he made that statement is *because* he was asked about Arsenal, thus there is a direct causal link. This is obvious, but if you're too pigheaded to see it, then I can't help you.

Slipperie_Slope said...

Sorry, good point, i phrased that wrong. I meant Arsenal in for Higuain and they happen to be the domestic club looking for suarez too. I agree with you he could easily go to city. I still think it will be real but we wont be getting the deal we want.

AndWithSuchSimplicity said...

I don't think he'd go on strike. He loves playing football too much for that.

AndWithSuchSimplicity said...

Looks like Wanyama is going to Soton. They beat us to Gaston Ramirez last summer, and now Wanyama. Jeez....

AndWithSuchSimplicity said...

Unfortunately, nobody is listening to you. The majority have already been brainwashed, and the heat has picked off the rest.
You'd think that Liverpool fans would obey the mantra, "Never trust the media."

AndWithSuchSimplicity said...

I think that everything does have to be 1000% literal, because It has to be translated from Spanish into English.
And then from English into sh!te.

AndWithSuchSimplicity said...

He's basically saying: "Regardless of my reputation, or how many fans boo me, a lot of clubs would have me like a shot. Which is nice to know, especially after I got set up by Evra, shat on by the FA, and shamefully ignored at the PFA awards. Gracias."

Although I may be paraphrasing him, slightly.

just can not believe what a scum bag suarez is, god help him if he stays in england next season even if thats in a red shirt.
the only people that have stood by him hes crapped on.
bad business all round by liverpool, this will drag on right till the end, holding lfc to ransom to force there hand.
dont care what people say and ive always said it, should have kept carroll, a man who wanted to play for the club and obviously scores goals, a real handful on his day and young, wasted by us.
realistically he is the best type of player we can attract now, no top euro player will join an average team that we are.
hope im wrong

Adam Griffin said...

Yeh, still not an encouraging read. It is frustrating to continue to hear the guy talk about how he clearly wants to move on. I don't think we can stick this for a whole summer, someone needs to put a deadline on it so everyone can get on with their lives. We'll be just fine either way but it's hard to be checking for regular team updates, wanting good news on player moves and be constantly presented with the same story.

Adam Griffin said...

I don't think it would be bad if he stays. He'll still contribute and give everything on the pitch, that's just the kind of player he is. The rest of the team will have their views but I think the issue can be put out there and dealt with. He wants to move, but if he doesn't then simple common sense suggests that everyone, including Suarez, will need to come to terms with reality. We've had worse issues to deal with in terms of player relations, this is just a guy who talks too much.

gideon said...

I backed Suarez and have done since he arrived. I do for all our players. But something stank about the biting incident. That isnt normal behaviour unless your intent on being given

2Jay said...

Don't think he'll go on strike because it will affect his game and not with the World Cup in his mind. Don't know if he is a liar but he sure is very insincere in his reasons for leaving. Looks more like he used Liverpool as a stepping stone to move on to bigger clubs when he first joined.

The club stood by him and he repays the club with constant whining. If he really wants to leave, just do it professionally with minimal comments. First he wants to leave England and now he doesn't mind considering Arsenal. This is hypocritical. Although I am a big fan of his, his behaviour is turning me off. You don't treat the club that feeds you and your family like that.

At Liverpool, a club with a huge fan base worldwide, he is a role model for a lot of youngsters and he should behave responsibly. With fame, comes a lot of shit and rewards. He needs to take the shit and the rewards that comes with it. Afterall, its because of the fans that you have football stars and its because of paying fans that Suarez and all the other players earn their millions. Without fans, they can be no clubs, no football stars and no millions to make!

Eric said...

First of all where did I defend Suarez. I said his remarks were bang out of order or are you going to misquote me too now? :-) Second of all Suarez said that because, in spite of all the media frenzy and supposed image damage he's caused Liverpool, English clubs would still like to sign him. To him, that is an acknowledgement of his performances on the pitch rather than just the incidents that he was involved in. He doesn't seem to have a preference or at least he never expressed it which you seem to suggest. Again, his comments were bang out of order and if he does leave to go to an English clubs I'll be the first to condemn him for being a liar and a Judas but until then, he's still innocent until proven guilty.

ps gill said...

yes agree with not a honest player. When he was in trouble he needed fans shoulder and support. When he realized that clubs are looking for him, he says he wants a club who is in champiions league. what a hypocite hehas been.He is worst than Torres when comes to integrity.
Million of fans supported him now the same numbers will hate him. This guy has no moral standards in him.

Kieren said...

You heard it here first...JK thinks Suarez is the best thing since sliced bread... who would have known it ;-)

Timbo said...

There's nothing pedantry about making sure the quote is correct. He's avoided answering directly to the question and without knowing what the original question was it's difficult for us to comment. It may be a subtle difference but it could make the quote read completely differently especially when put in context.

If the question was - 'will you sign for arsenal?' and his response is, 'it's nice to know that English clubs still value me for what I did on the pitch despite all the controversy and media attention' that is the kind of leveled response you would expect from someone with a bit of media nouse and certainly not someone begging Arsenal to sign him. You've sold the response as 'Suarez courts English clubs and is therefore a Judas.'

As a journalist you, more than anyone here, should know that quotes can be engineered and misused to fit a story, especially when taken as a snapshot of a whole interview and then changed.

I'm not defending Suarez by any means, I think he should shut his mouth and keep any opinions on his future behind closed doors. It's been particularly un-classy of him to repeatedly answer questions and offer veiled hints of wanting to leave but turning every comment into him calling for a transfer is not helpful. I'm sure we could misquote a few of your statements over the years to fit some unsavory opinions and you'd be the first to be offended.

Henry was unknown yet he got about 20 goals a season for 5 years.

Karim Govani said...

Henry an unknown? Are you kidding me? He was always destined for the top. Juventus played him out of position and he found the Italian game too slow. He was always going to be a hit in the Premier League.
Chirag - Bent didnt play much last year because of problems with Lambert plus Benteke was on fire. He would definitely have a point to prove this season if he can play regularly. Defoe is a natural born goalscorer.

El_Uruguayo said...

Would it be very respectful for the club if he decided to come out and say - "My wife thinks Liverpool is a dump, and wants out." or "Liverpool aren't ambitious enough - and I don't want to waste my career here", or "Liverpool are too cheap to pay me the money I can get elsewhere." All are very valid arguments, probably come into play, but none would be deemed respectful.

The press treatment is valid, but not the entire reason. His comments recently, probably hinted more that staying at Liverpool might be such a bad option.

There's so many factors that its hard not to blame him. He should be able to command double the wages he receives at Liverpool, in a nicer climate, with better press treatment, in a better team, with champions league, and his own language.

Sorry, but the current management is doing enough to attract or retain the kind of players needed win trophies, sure Sturridge and Coutinho are great signings, Aspas and Mignolet look good too - but at the end of the day, you need an entire team of this caliper, and to pay good money - Suarez deserves Rooney, Tevez, or Aguero type wages - he's currently getting about half that.
