Game On: LFC offer €14m for Bundesliga star who's 'strong as a bull'. Bargain...?

In May, Anfield legend Jan Molby urged Liverpool to sign Schalke defender Kyriakos Papadopoulos, and at the time, the Reds were heavily link with a possible transfer. Speculation has died down over the last two months, but Liverpool have reportedly reignited interest in the Greek defender.

According to reports in Germany this week, Liverpool have put in a €14m bid for Papadopoulos, who Brendan Rodgers sees as a long-term replacement for retired Reds defender Jamie Carragher.

In a column for the Liverpool Echo in May, Molby insisted that Papadopolous 'fits the profile' of the type of player Liverpool 'want to build a team around', and shrugged off worries about the young defender's injury history. he enthused:

"When I’ve seen him [Papadopolous] in Champions League matches, I’ve been impressed. he’s a talented young player with real potential. He is as strong as a bull, dominant in the air and very good in one-on-one situations.

"He hasn’t played since before Christmas due to a knee problem but I’m sure Liverpool will have received reassurances that he has made a complete recovery".

Soon after, former Monaco CEO Tor-Kristian Karlsen described Kyriakos as 'one of the best center-backs in Europe', and claimed that several Premier League clubs - including LFC - were chasing the youngster. He tweeted:

"Liverpool interest is concrete. Has been on the shortlist/highly rated by many European top clubs (including Chelsea, Man City and Man Utd). Nice transfer coup for Liverpool if they manage to land Papadopoulos.

At the end of May, talkSPORT and ESPN football analyst Rafael Honigstein confirmed Karlsen's contention, and claimed that Papadopoulos was 'close' to an LFC move:

"Liverpool are pretty close to landing Kyriakos Papadopoulos. There’s no fear he will be affected long-term [by the injury]. Schalke have three very good centre-backs, having picked up Felipe Santana from Dortmund for €1m. That makes it easier for Papadopoulos to go."

'Papa' looks like a good player, but he's going to need time to get back up to speed after his injury; adapt to a new country/lifestyle, AND adapt to the Premier League. As such, It's slightly risky (IMO) to bring him in as the replacement for Jamie Carragher, or indeed Martin Skrtel, but that risk is somewhat assuaged by the fact Kolo Toure is at the club, which means Papadopolous - or indeed any young centre-back - won't need to be thrust into the team from day one.

Yeh right this will never happen , liverpool have no more money left they had 3m and they most if not all.
Rodgers ahd only 25m to spend and has spent most , aspas 8m ,alberto 6m ,mingelot 9m.
so we have about 2m to sign a defender

It is really concerning time for lfc no top signings while if suarez goes , even southampton and swansea will have stronger teams
    Relegation is a real possability

  5. You have been well and truly misinformed. Where do you get you info from?

LFC are not done with transfer business as yet.

  6. Carroll sold = 17mill , jonjo sold = 6. Add to that what BR said yesterday, we will sign more players for the first team and don't need to sell to fund this. Relegation 2014?? Thank god your not in charge. Why bother supporting LFC if it brings that much negativity to your life?

  7. I would be excited to see him play for LFC but then who knows, we might not even table a bid just like the Micki saga where everyone thought LFC was in a lot of action.

  8. rodgers said last week we were done with squad players and now it was time for marque sigings, well if this is a marque singing i suggest we stick to potential, now do not get me wrong he looks ok ,but the fact they picked up a player for 1million makes it easier for them to let him go says to me they must be better players out there alderwierield for one imo and cheaper

  9. Alright doomsday merchant, the sun is shinning, it's Friday. I can assure you LFC won't get relegated. Let the old hair down and grab a drink. No offence intended, peace and love. X

  14. Haha, I think Jason Carr has started up a new account, either that or sir Alex is getting pretty bored already.

  15. I'm thinking either it is Molby or Nicol in disguise, as some think they are overly negative of us.

  16. I don't get it, people are losing their heads and the season has yet to start. I don't care what people say. I'm a BR fan and IMO we are in good hands. Come on LFC

  17. I rate papadolpulous much higher than alderwierield. IMO papa could be the ideal solution to our defensive errors, and probably one of the best "marquee" signings we could get for that position ..
whatever I just hope Rodgers sticks to his words and goes for some star-players

    ReplyDelete
  18. Many clubs have walked away because of Papa's price but he is definitely better than Alderweireld.

  19. i totally agree..

  20. I was just about to ask the very same thing. So many people throw around these random 20-25m figures as to what our transfer budget is but where does this information come from? I doubt liverpool is done in the market. Rodgers even said they were done strengthening the squad and now it was time to sign players to strengthen the team. Which points to first 11 quality signings IMO

  21. I am not confident about his injury records, but apart from that, I am sure we 'll not be able to sign him with 12mn.

I have seen this boy in action - he has the potential to be better than Terry or Rio. The first thing looking at him you feel is SOLID, low centre of gravity, a man (boy) with a tank like shape. But, despite his structure, he is fast, probably 'll beat Charrager running backwards, a very clean tackler, very vocal & relentless. Papa is only over 6', but absolutely dominating in air in a league very close to EPL (Germany). He might grow another inch & add another stone of muscles & if he can keep his fitness, he 'll be another 500+ match defender for us.

You don't need to be 35mn player to be a marque signing.

Are you for real? Papadopoulous is a class player, strong, good at step pieces from corners, also he likes playing on the ground, perfect partner for agger. Also would make our defence ALOT stronger.only problem is he still Recovering from a knee Injury... But other than that he would bring alot to our team.

  24. ARSENAL have a agreed a fee for BERNARD according to reports in Brazil. If true, that's another name BR can cross off his list!

    ReplyDelete
  25. i thought that was a strange statement.....me thinks this guy is either overrated or injury prone...

    ReplyDelete
  26. couple of things here 1) barcelona are after agger 2) this guy has been injured a while ( no that robust )

So? We don't want to sell agger, and he doesn't want to go. So he stays. Also I said that in my comment.he can recover and we can use skrtel and Toure for abit while he recovers.

  50. Well it would be some kind of funny suicide to say were going to sign the marquees now, and stop acting in the market any more ...

    ReplyDelete
  51. It's pretty funny. Do you know what's even more funny, BR will be in charge for another season at the very least. Oh the torture.

    ReplyDelete
  52. So Ian Ayre and Brendan Rodgers told a bare faced lie when they said they wanted to bring in a few more players? I'm not sure who gave you the info on the amount we have to spend, but if I were you I would drop kick them in the face and ask them if they smellalala ...what the Rock...is cookin...

    ReplyDelete
  53. Just out of interest, please no war. If you had a magic wand what would the top three things you would change or do to LFC. Just so we understand the negativity?

    ReplyDelete
  54. almost as funny as saying you wont loan a player out then do....i don't want to get in a tit for tat but Allen was rogers idea of a marquee signing last time round so im not getting my hopes up

    ReplyDelete
  55. i didnt think you ever was ...youll always be a tw*T to me lol

    ReplyDelete
  56. id make myself owner, manager and centre forward lol

    ReplyDelete
  57. soon as the price went over 20m we were out of it lol

    ReplyDelete
  58. haha, sounds good to me. All i want is a few super sub appearances.

    ReplyDelete
  59. What's his injury record like so far? That's my only major concern

    ReplyDelete
  60. 1 i would like fsg to inform the fans exactly where we stand, they say we can compete for any player in the world ,yet any player we are after we lose out on if an half decent club shows interest,
2 if we are going down the road of buying young players lets buy the best ,and not the second best
3 no matter what we need players for the now with FFplay coming in if we do not invest heavily on a team now i fear we will struggle with a great deal of our income going on ground development

    ReplyDelete
  61. All valid points, agree with a lot of it. But I believe we could have a lot worse owners. I truly believe they took over a mess which they were repairing, came under peer pressure to hire kenny long term. Any other club would have been bankrupted with what kenny and comoli done. You simply can't say we haven't been given money, we have, massive money. It's just that it has been terribly spent. We are just repairing previous damage and it will take time.

    ReplyDelete
  62. when you take into account the sales we have made its not so much ,also the sheer bare faced lying that the club is doing to the fans is really starting to get on my nerves, last week mignolet was competition for pepe ,according to rodgers ,now it looks like pepe.s off ,hardly surprising something i stated at the time ,but why make statements they know are not true

    ReplyDelete
  63. i rate him highly too if he fails to come cheap we could always try kjaer .....agger could put in a good word for us ;)

    ReplyDelete
  64. thats what winds me up....they say one thing then do another...if there is no money for transfers just come out and say so .....if the moneys not there its not there...its all the crap trap about competing with the best then losing out to second rate clubs over the fee...if they had there mind set on the Alabanian or whatever an early 25m bid would have sealed it quickly ...i just don't think they had any real intention of signing him unless it was at rock bottom

    ReplyDelete
  65. totally agree cannot wait for the excuses of fsg once the window closes

    ReplyDelete
  66. well, we will see thats all i can say now, i´m not overly pesimistic and not the other way around. i think the best way to wait for new signings is the excited but realistic/critical way most of the guys here have...

    ReplyDelete
  67. kjaer isn´t the right one i think, im not really following him but he wasn´t ever close to being good enough for lfc i think. I mean if we dont have enough defensive errors, he´s the right one to have some more ;) he just joined lille, so he´s not avaliable, Dede would have been my guy. but unfortunately he decided to stay in brazil

    ReplyDelete
  68. we are running out of options now lol
