Transfer Coup: Star-striker who had heart set on LFC available for measly £5m. Bid...?

QPR boss Harry Redknapp recently admitted that it will be 'hard' to keep Loic Remy at Loftus Road, and with the London club now relegated, it seems likely that the striker will jump ship for another Premier League club. Liverpool are being linked with a move for the 26-year old, and he could be available for a knockdown price.

Liverpool were regularly linked with a move for Remy last year, and prior to the Euros, the player's agent, Frederic Guerra, told reporters:

"He [Remy] has his heart is set on playing for Liverpool. Remy is pure gold. He has great pace and that is something Liverpool need in attack".

With Luis Suarez suspended for 10-games, Remy is once again being linked with a move to Anfield, and given his apparent preference for Liverpool, the Reds must be in with a great chance of signing him.

The good news is that Remy could be available on the cheap. According to reports today, his buy-out clause is a comparatively low £5m, which is a fantastic price for a premier League-proven international striker.

With 5 goals in 10 starts for QPR, Remy can clearly cut it in the Premier League, and in a recent interview, he made it clear that he wants to stay in England's top division. He told FIFA.com:

"It [the Prem] feels like the perfect league for me in every way. You get less time to read the game in this league. There’s more pressure and there’s more contact, though there is more space too. It’s great for a player like me. They play deep here and I like that"

QPR boss Harry Redknapp is convinced that Remy can be even more successful in the league next season. He told Sky Sports recently:

"Over the season he would get you 20 goals in the Premier League. And a 20-goal-a-year man is going to be hard to hang on to"

Remy's departure from QPR is practically guaranteed, especially after being recalled recently to the France national team. If he drops down a division, he can basically forget about playing in next year's World Cup, but if he moves to another Premier League club, it's all to play for.

The only question is, where will he end up? Will Remy be a good fit for Liverpool? I doubt he'd move to the club to be third choice behind Suarez and Sturridge. He'll probably want some kind of assurance that he'll be played on merit, and not just dumped on the bench when Suarez returns, and that (IMO) is only fair.

From a cost perspective, the deal seems like a no-brainer, and even if the Reds have to go to £8m, it's still a good deal for a striker approaching the prime of his career. Another major plus-point is that Remy is already settled in the Premier League, and with a good pre-season behind him, he should hit the ground running next season.

Remy knew what he was doing when he moved to QPR; I'm sure he saw the club as a stepping-stone to a bigger Premier League team, and it seems he'll get his wish sooner rather than later.

Worth a bid...?

  1. Worth a bid I think, as there is no doubt he will leave. Still got some good years ahead of him, so he should fit the "young/youth" policy.

  2. if he comes he will have to settle for third choice jaimie or are you saying drop sturridge or are you still hoping suarez will leave, and even if suare doe,s go he surely will not be the one to replace him

  3. Alongside Sturridge with Coutinho behind, we'd be a fearsome prospect on counterattacks if we sign this guy.

  4. Whoever is playing the best should play. If Remy came and scored more than Sturridge/Suarez, then he should play (and vice versa)

  5. For that price, it seems a bit of a no brainer. Snap him up. If we do, lets hope he doesn't do a Jelavic but from what I have seen of Remy, he looks a better player.

  6. i totally agree it was you who said he would not be happy on the bench so imo he would be battling sturridge for the second striker that would make them both unhappy

  9. You have no point Jason so ssshhh

  10. Don't think we really need him what with Borini returning, although for 5m he'd be a bargain but would he be happy on the bench? non.

  11. remy or borini? shut it u nob

  12. No brainier. GET HIM! The fact that QPR bought him first is great, we get to check out the goods (make sure he's not a poor man's Djib Cisse) & we get to activate his transfer clause.
My only worry us that I see Spuds after him too, to replace Adebayor. With the advantage of staying in London & our typical slowness in transfers I hope we don't lose out.
For me if we have Remy, Saurez, Sturridge & Borini great, it's been so long since we've been spoilt for choice, yes based on merit too! It's these sort of rumours that give me hope because they're all hungry for success!

  13. Every top club has 3/4 quality strikers. This season there where a few clubs left short up front, namely chelsea, spurs and especially liverpool. At this moments in time our forwards include: Suarez, sturridge, downing, coutinho(winger/attacking mid), borini, Assaidi and sterling. If we are to strengthen in depth and quality for next year, that attacking line up is missing a quality first team player. Downing has improved drastically from last season and has picked up a few goals and assists but he's not going to get any better and I believe we need a more versitile winger in that position, so I would sell him whilst we can (£5-6mill). Assaidi has hardly featured in the epl and has shown glimpses of quality in other competitions but clearly BR does not rate him and its only right to let him go in the summer and make space for a player we will actually use. He could sell for up to £4mill. The rest of the forwards I would keep, borini and sterling should make cameo appearances and start in matches like the capital one cup and FA cup. Sturridge will not always perform, we have seen how his form can disappear at times and Suarez is left to do it on his own. Coutinho will almost certainly be deployed to the CAM position more often than on the wing, so we are in need off another forward. Ideally I would go for a winger that scores goals, so mertens or Menez would fit the mould perfectly. However knowing the way liverpool do business we often tend to pick Z instead of A (Allen instead of Ramirez is a perfect example). So hopefully we go for remy because he's in his prime, would add great competition up front and rogers can easily rotate between Suarez, sturridge and remy. If Suarez gets suspended then we wouldn't have to worry as much, if sturridge starts to drop form then we wouldn't have to worry as much. Plus at £5-8 mill it would be a sweat deal.

  14. But unfortunately I can see him going for spurs, especially if they do not land damiao.

    ReplyDelete
  15. For 5m, absolutely.

Doesn't anyone else get the impression that we'd somehow end up paying 10m though?

Except for Coutinho and Sturridge, I feel scarred by our transfers.

  16. Remy would be a quality signing i feel. Suarez has been playing behind the striker a lot of late and there is no reason why we can't have an interchanging front 3 of Remy, Sturridge and Suarez with Coutinho playing in behind the striker. That would be a scary good offense.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Why can't we accomodate all 3? They dont all need to be used for every game but if they were it could look like this

    ---------------------Sturridge--------------------

    Suarez------------------------------------Remy

    --------------------Coutinho---------------------

    ----------Gerrard-----------Lucas--------------

    Enrique---------------------------------Johnson
    -------------Agger----------Kelly (or someone new)

    ---------------------Reina--------------------------

    That'd be a fun starting 11 to watch ;)

    ReplyDelete
  18. what no henderson the most improved player in the premier league this season imo,and yes it would be fun we would certainly concede goals theres no doubt about that

    ReplyDelete
  19. if we do get him, i think we should start him and sturridge together (while suarez is still suspended). POWERFUL POTENT PACEY PARTNERSHIP! Anyways, 5 mil is a bargain for a international player

    ReplyDelete
  20. Remy would be a great signing, especially for 5 million. He would be perfect playing out wide right, he's quick and can score goals. Perfect player for us to add to an already impressive list of attacking talent.

If we could get him and a defender or 2. ( I believe Alderwield is coming)

I would prefer Williams, no messing around, he fits straight in and improves out starting 11 straight away, he is exactly what we need so sort out our defensive problems for the next few seasons.

If we can pick up Diame for his reported price tag then we would be mad not to.

Remy (5m), Diame(3.5m) and Williams(10m) would be 3 amazing buys and I believe would make a world of difference to our team for little money.

All 3 are proven in the league and are better players than what we have currently starting for us.

  21. fun for the other team, we'd have to replace coutinho with henderson to have any midfield presense

    ReplyDelete
  22. every time you said downing was a forward the football gods cringed

    ReplyDelete
  23. and we shouldnt sell downing, he's the only winger we have that can play defense

    ReplyDelete
  24. if its a buyout clause we wouldnt need to, but im more worried about his wage demands, i mean at qpr he was earning boatloads of cash

    ReplyDelete
  25. without Europe we would have an unhappy camp unless suarez leaves....the numbers dont add up especially when other positions are weak ....top teams can carry 4 or 5 strikers .....but its been some years since we are challenging on all fronts...suarez ,sturridge, courtino ( hes not a midfielder ) borini ,remy, sterling ,ASSADI ( yes hes still here ) downing ( hes played a lot of games in the front 3 )throw in a couple of youngsters who need game time and its overkill

    ReplyDelete
  26. How does a buyout clause work? Is it the first team to activate it "wins", or can another team bid higher if desired?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Williams is the only one on that list that I personally don't rate that highly.

Maybe if we paid 6m at most for him. But I don't rate him at 10m. Would rather play Kelly at CB, or dareisay, give Coates a try!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I can't tell if you are being serious about Hendo?

I think he has come a long way.

    ReplyDelete
  29. It means a club have to allow him to go if they get a bid at the release price but yes, if two teams want him there can be a bidding war. However, if the player wants to move to the club offering the lower amount, as long as it is the amount of the release clause, he can insist on going there even if the selling club could have made more selling him somewhere else.

    ReplyDelete
  30. deadly serious i would start him every game been saying so for months

    ReplyDelete
  31. He'd be an excellent signing. We need to be able to play different sides in different ways. Some need guile and bits of trickery to unlock strong defenses whereas others need sudden bursts of pace to catch them out. With Susrez for the former, Remy for the latter and Sturridge who has a bit of both plus makes an excellent provider and Borini available as good cover, we would have a very good four to choose from. We could play any two of the main three and Borini as floating cover for inevitable injuries, bans and cups :0)

At just £5-8m, he wouldn't cost us much, we'd get that for Skrtel who is surely going so we wouldn't even be touching the budget and our forward line would be sorted. On to the defense :0)

    ReplyDelete
  32. remy would push DS out of the side imo. Remy has more class and consistency.

    ReplyDelete
  33. saying it for months yeah right, that would mean you've been saying something positive yet we all know you don't no the meaning of the word it's all doom and gloom for you

    ReplyDelete
  34. Sturridge gets a lot of knocks and injuries, and loses form when he doesn't get a kick up the backside. We need strength and depth to get the best out of all of our players. I'm sure it'd be explained to Remy that he'd have to fight for his place. This aint QPR!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Borini can go out on loan to get a decent run of games if he isn't at a level to compete with Sturridge and Remy. Why should Liverpool FC have a weaker squad just so Borini gets a decent amount of games. We trying to get into the top 4 aren't we?!

  36. Former Liverpool midfielder Gary McAllister says for the Reds to compete with the likes of Manchester Utd and Manchester City for the Premier League title, they’ll need to spend up to £200million on improving the squad.

Brendan Rodgers is looking towards which players he will bring in to Anfield this summer, but knows that the club doesn’t have the botomless pit of finances or Champions League football to lure players the way Manchester City do.

Speaking to Goal.com, McAllister spoke of the financial reality of modern football and the gulf of difference betwen the Reds, currently seventh in the league table, and the teams at the top.

“I think it’s purely down to finances,” he said.

“For Liverpool to be really competing where they want to be competing – that means winning the league – they’re a couple of hundred million quid away.

“They’re going to finish seventh this season, behind Everton, and, if the owners can’t come up with those funds, it’s going to be gradual; developing players, picking players from Europe in that £8m, £9m, £10m bracket and developing them into stars that can compete right at the very top.”

Former Liverpool midfielder Gary McAllister has suggested that the club would need to spend £200 million to be title contenders.

That is quite a substantial amount, ten times as much as Liverpool have realistically to spend this summer, which suggests it could be some time before they are genuine title contenders.

Every single Liverpool fan would prefer to see the side competing against the big Manchester and London clubs for the league title, as opposed to scrapping away against Everton just to secure European football.

For them to be able to do that, McAllister is perfectly right in his suggestion that it will take massive investment in superstar players as well as spending more on the infrastructure of the club to produce a championship winning team.

“For Liverpool to be really competing where they want to be competing – that means winning the league – they're a couple of hundred million quid away – if the owners can't come up with those funds, it's going to be gradual,” he told Goal.com.

Their current financial situation is intriguing because the owners have branded a realistic and sensible logic of thinking around the club, for which they do deserve a lot of praise.

Liverpool could easily go out and spend the sort of money that McAllister has talked about but it would be hugely counter productive in a number of ways because they would be spending money they don’t physically have.

John Henry is a major multi-million dollar businessman so he could generate the sort of cash, most likely through borrowing that would allow Liverpool to bridge the sort of shortcoming that McAllister implies.

However, in the long run of financial cost controls all over European football, it would harm Liverpool in a big way and the fans would prefer to see the side get back to the top the honest way as opposed to the quick way.

Even if Liverpool spent £200 million to get to a title challenging position, they then need to stay there which is impossible if the club doesn’t have a sustainable financial model.

Manchester City and Chelsea have wealthy owners while Manchester United have the biggest commercial brand in football to fall back on.

Brendan Rodgers has already developed a very talented side and worked out a method which allows him to invest the funds he does have well and also bring through the youngsters at the club.

He recently spoke of the Borussia Dortmund model from Germany, which he is trying to base Liverpool around. It’s an investment of time more than anything else but if Liverpool progress similarly to the way they have done throughout the season, they are going to easily consolidate as a top four side in the next few years.

How much do you think Liverpool would need to spend?

  37. As would I! He is like Kuyt with far superior pace and passing accuracy.

    ReplyDelete
  38. A counterattacking team will not involve Suarez! He slows the game down tremendously.

  39. Did everyone forget about Carroll?? How bout him? Sell? Keep?

    ReplyDelete
  40. I would love to have him at the club, a front three of Sturridge, Suarez and Remy with Countino in behind them at the front of the midfield would be extremely dangerous. Have Gerrard and Lucas in front of the back four then.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Understood. Thanks for the clarification!

  42. I just didn't include him in this possible lineup Jason. I also said they don't all need to play together at the same time just that if they were a front 3 like that would work. As for conceding lots of goals it's not majorly different to the formations we a playing now and I feel it would totally work. Henderson has been excellent this season and I've been behind him from the start. But in this hypothetical lineup which I was trying to include all 3 of remy, Suarez and Sturbridge in who else would you dislodge?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Yeah maybe you are right. Henderson adds the energy and drive that the midfield is missing but I couldn't find it in my heart to leave coutinho out aha. If we signed Diame through.. Swap him out for Lucas and we could leave coutinho in.

For the record I do very much rate both Lucas and Henderson I was just trying to create a hypothetical lineup to include all 3 strikers which we could use against weaker teams. Certainly wouldn't be an every week starting 11

  46. yes m8 it is all doom and gloom rodgers as seen to that but hendo as been a ray of hope along with coutinho and maybe sturridge it looks like we could have some decent young players for a change

    ReplyDelete
  47. i think you would find there is no worse cuprit for slowing the game down than allen infact sorry i completly disagree with you about suarez

    ReplyDelete
  48. Valid point I suppose and Suarez out wide is a little wasted but we have seen him play there this season and he was full of running as always and helped out defensively. If we do sign Remy we could try this to see if it works. You may well be right and it probably would be our strongest 11 I just couldnt see any other way to fit all 3 in the starting lineup.

  49. i never said remy would be unhappy i was just rplying to jaimie
