'It's ridiculous' - LFC legend slams 'humiliating' Man Utd tribute. Typically ungrateful...?

Prior to Arsenal's game with Manchester United on Monday, the Gunners laid on a guard of honour for the newly-crowned Premier League champions, which many would argue is a gratifying display of sportsmanship in a game increasingly marred by cheating and corruption. Reds legend Dietmar Hamann has a different view on the issue, and he's criticised Arsenal for kowtowing to United.

Discussing the game on Tuesday, Hamann said:

"Why would a team that is desperate for the points to finish in the top four do a guard of honour before the game?

"I don't mind a guard of honour after the game as United deserve it, but to do it before a match is ridiculous.

"I would feel humiliated".

It does seem a little strange to have a guard of honour before a competitive game, but there don't seem to be any hard and fast rules governing such things.

What about Man United's three remaining games? Will every team now have to give the guard of honour? Thankfully, Liverpool don't have to face that choice, as I sincerely doubt the Reds players would line up to clap the likes of Patrice Evra onto the field (!)

After Arsenal won the league title in 1991, they faced Man United at Highbury in the final league game of the season, and in a rare display of sportsmanship, United's players clapped the Champions onto the pitch. Perhaps Arsenal were just repaying the favour?

Whatever the reason, as you can see from the video below, United's ungrateful players - led by Evra - didn't even acknowledge Arsenal's praise; only David De Gea made any attempt to thank the Gunners' players for their display of sportsmanship.

Chelsea gave United a guard of honour at Stamford Bridge in 2007, and United completely blanked the Blues' players, just like they snubbed Arsenal on Monday:

Now, compare this to the guard of honour Barcelona gave Real Madrid in 2008. Despite the intense rivalry between the two clubs, Madrid's players had the grace and humility to thank the Barca players for the gesture:

Typical Man United. No class, no grace, and sore winners (as well as sore losers)

  3. Nah, just pointing out how classless Man United are. Not ONE of your players had the grace to shake hands with an Arsenal player and thank them for the guard of honour. Disgraceful really. What kind of message does that send out? And why should team give Guards of Honour to players who don't appreciate it?

  4. De Gea was the only one to do anything, but I think he was just saying hello to Cazorla.

  5. good article - LIverpools fans and players stayed to clap Arsenal round at Anfield in 1989 after the heartbreak of Hillsborough and losing the league with the last kick - class!

  6. Non-topic. Nuri Sahin must be thanking his luck that it didn't workout in Liverpool. He would have missed the chance to play in CL FINAL (or win it)......Another BR failure of man management. Sahin good enough for CL Final team but not for Liverpool. What a joke.

  7. Or maybe they didn't want to run their noses in it you bitter knob. All your articles are just bitter anti Man Utd you desperate prick. As for Barca/Rm yes they shook hands, before fighting, diving and trying to get eachother sent off! Anyway don't worrying want have any prinlems with guards of honours...unless they are doing is for Man Utd!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Are man utd players supposed to give hugs and shake hands? Did they ask for guard of honor? There is no point in criticizing whatever they do....at the end of the day they win everything and we keep discussing about their class while our team falls down to mediocrity.

  9. 1989!!! Haha tribal rivalry and the game has changed a lot since then...though most of fans are still stick in the 80's I guess

  10. Highly doubt Sahin will start, and maybe BR brought him in but he always looked half-assed anyways.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I'd worry about your own players a fans behaviour before criticizing Man Utd as usual...bite bite
Maybe the united players were embarrassed and just wanted it over with and not run arsenal players faces in it....bitter man

  12. Is there no end to the bitterness of you scousers ? You're a joke and your club is heading the same way.

  13. always??? How many starts did he actually make? same with coates....we throw judgement too easily...not all players can hit the ground running especially when they change countries, style of play, managers, climate etc...

  14. Well lets see. Guard of honor is a team lined up clapping while the other team enters the pitch. Seems to have gone off accordingly. For each player to shake each arsenal hand would take a minute as there is a few feet gap from one side to the other. How would the arsenal players clap or 'honour' the team if they have to stop clapping or bring their hands from behind their backs? I understand aside from negativity there isnt a lot going on around liverpool but really? Classless? Not sure a team housing a racist and repeat biting offender can even mutter the word class, let alone judge others credentials.

  15. Christ, how old is this Jamesie idiot? 12?
You shit throwing, racist, cheating, diving, biting, professional victims are the laughing stock of football. How the mighty have fallen. Class and dignity? You can't be serious. Probably the most classless club in the Pl - worse than Chelsea.
    lol

  16. doubt if my "negative" post will make it through the censorship - this site must've been modelled on RAWK where every thread is locked if there's a whisper of negativity about your joke of a club.

  17. Very bitter, you forget about the time we gave Chelsea a guard of honour after they won the league, there are no hard and fast rules about this and neither do you acknowledge an apponent before an encounter, the difference between united and liverpool is the fact that we are still competitive which means our players will embrace the opposition after the game but not before or during irrespective of the circumstances. Remember the Neville brothers before the game in the tunnel anyone?

  19. Don't know why you're moaning about Sahin to be honest. He initially got a few starts but he couldn't cut it, he was too slow for us. I'd also prefer the clubs own players like Hendo and Shelvey instead of a temporary fix loan deal. This article or anything recently on this site has nothing to do with Sahin. You just wanna have a go at BR. I'm not his biggest fan at all, but play a fair game mate.

Wow! Take a bow interweb the award for most pathetic pointless article has just been awarded. Nailed it in the last paragraph, but please fix the headline error, you've miss spelt 'No class, no grace - introducing Jamie Kanwar'.
Utd are worthy champions this year and Arsenal showed them the respect they deserve for their achiement, take a breath and try do the same.
Take three breaths and a half intelligent human being will realize by not witnessing a wave of high-fives, hummers and/or reach arounds 'led by Evra'?!? we haven't just witnessed disrespect rather we've all just read a jumble of words, forming a misguided opinion, and passed off as fact.
And now we're all dumber for it.
    Thanks interweb and thanks Jamie.

Your Munich chanting (until '89) excrement throwing (better?) fans and diving, cheating, racist, biting failing players have less class and dignity than Chelsea. Your club is a laughing stock these days. How the mighty have fallen. You'll never improve until you stop blaming others, stop being victims and get an understanding of truth, as opposed to delusion. Keep up the good work Brenton or even better, get KKKenny back if you can get him sober.

  24. why deleted? Your fans and club are a national joke and laughing stock. You only have to look at the censorship here. Don't let anyone see the truth. Did your fans not throw excrement on United fans below them in the Anfield Rd stand? Do your players not dive, cheat, bite and make racist comments. Go on, delete again. Sad.

  25. In a matter of minutes, the number of United fans with sore bums that have had a rant on here is astonishing. I think everyone is welcome, but I never go on United sites and have a cry. Oppose the article in a civil matter. Anyways, just more views for JK!!

  26. Well write a fair and uninflammatory article without the nastiness and peoe won't hurl insults. Very disrespectful

    ReplyDelete
  27. I mentioned Non topic before the comment but seems JK edited it. Secondly, its not moaning but wondering how bigger teams then us play a Liverpool reject. Thirdly, he hardly had 7-8 starts and if you invest on a player the amount which we did....we should have played him more or shouldn't have invested anything at all. Just shows BR naivety there...

    ReplyDelete
  28. to be fair, chelsea players didn't acknowledge man utd players when they formed a guard of honour too. But I still think man utd fans are by far the worst fans on the planet. 8/10 man utd fans have absolutely no humility or grace. Every time they win it's just the usual "ahahahahaha fergie this fergie that, 19 times, 20 times, hahaha united is the greatest club ever, we will never die, no one compares to us, fergie will never retire". The consistently hypocritical band wagoners all need a good whack to the head.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I agree in some aspects but it's only down to Rodgers to a certain extent. Again I'm no big fan of Rodgers at all but I was not impressed with Sahin. He hasn't played much of a part in Dortmund's most significant fixtures either, he's not the player he was 2 or so seasons ago. I agree Rodgers is naive though, look at the whole Henderson/Allen thing, and maybe Skrtel and Coates too.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I haven't read the dictionary of late, but, to be hypocritical let alone consistently hypocritical wouldn't they have to be wrong??
    20 times, etc etc

    ReplyDelete
  31. And you as well as the rest of the long list of opposing supporters need to stop locking in on these fans you say have no humility, as really liverpool fans have done nothing but cry about other teams, those teams fans and everything else under the sun. Yet never point their finger at their own selves or club. When SAF makes a mistake i have no issues pointing that out to my friends and colleagues in which im the actual only united fan, rest are chelsea, tottenham, west ham and a millwall supporter. No problem pointing the blame where it lies. Just cause you deal with or associate or frequent places where nothing but cuntish people reside, doesnt mean the rest of the fan base follows their lead.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I wasn't necessarily resonating their ungraceful boasting with hypocrisy. I was resonating it with lack of class, humility and etc. If you're trying to to start an argument by being a smart ass, you're in the wrong place. This isn't the ESPN soccernet comments page.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Im going so call it and say Sahin was the biggest culprit in our loss to arsenal at the beginning of the campaign.
BR played him in his deep role (which he claimed was his best) at first he looked too slow then he just looked plain bored to be out there and didnt manage anything more than a jog.
Cant win them all, Not the first bad signing and wont be the last.

  34. Grace is a critical part of sport, whether it comes from the winners or losers. The guard of honour is a traditional congratulation to the team that has won the league and to provide this gesture before the game would surely get a team fired up to perform thereafter. We certainly saw a much more aggressive Arsenal side than we're recently used to. To provide a guard of honour after the game could be even more humiliating. Imagine having to do it if they had just been beaten! I'm sure the United players were grateful for the acknowledgement of their achievement but any 'thanks' as they passed through the guard of honour could be seen as patronising - particularly on a site like this where grace seems to be reserved when it comes to United. To choose this subject to be critical of United shows a distinct lack of grace.

    ReplyDelete
  35. people in glass houses. Classy way Liverpool handled the Suarez racism affair. Lovely t-shirts.

SAF really lacked in class when he sent a letter of congratulations to Rafa Benitez for winning CL in 2005.

Well done Jaimie, carry on talking rubbish as per.

As for the 'like of Evra' comment? What's Evra done wrong exactly? complain about being racially abused? that horrible horrible man!

  37. Guess you've forgotten what Liverpool fans tried to do in Athens? Trying to enter the stadium without a ticket and causing violent scenes. Apparently Hillsborough wasn't enough for those Liverpool fans.

Or how about kicking an ambulance containing a player with a broken leg in it?
Or Liverpool fans urinating on Rio Ferdinand.

    Spare us the morality lecture.

  38. You really want true grace then crickets your sport laddie!!!

  39. These Arsenal players were too young to remember what happened in 1991. This is just a tribute a feeder club deemed worthwhile conferring on the paymaster. AFC are truly a club that enters the temple of EPL football each season with the soul of an accountant or some biblical character trading anything marketable for a few shekels of silver...

    ReplyDelete
  40. I'm sorry but out of all the fans I have encountered in my years, Utd fans have been the worst. You may be one of the 2 out of the 10 I implied are not like that. I never said the whole fan base is like that. Utd just has a higher proportion of them. Don't twist my words. You can't accuse me of stereotyping if your comment about liverpool fans is as stereotypical and general as it gets.

  42. Typical scouser, suck it up and take it on the chin. After what United did this season in the league and wrap the title up with 4 games left and 20points off third, they deserved a guard of honour.

  49. i think if i was in the team giving the guard of honour i would rather the recipients just put their heads down and got on with it rather than all smiles shaking hands rubbing my teams nose in it, in a way it is more dignified to walk through get it done and not make a big deal of it. Your argument has no basis and is a desperate attempt at trying to find some way to attack united. So in Spain they shook hands, they also spend their time on the pitch diving around crying, some things we do differently in England.

    ReplyDelete
  50. james anderson9:19 pm, May 01, 2013

just the shut the fuck up. No body thanks for a guard of honour because you earn it over 10 months. Just cause some spanish cunts say hello to each other doesn't mean anything. If you notice Evra comes out applauding as well. I think that is a good enough gesture. I bet liverpool fans will expect a guard of honour when they are relegated as well and cry foul otherwise.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Not really sure this is a lack of gratitude. I've seen more teams just stoically accept a guard of honour than reciprocate the respect (which is a class move to be fair).
It'd be nice if teams (and even more so, fans) showed each other more respect, but I'm not sure United deserve reproachment here.

  53. I gotta say Didi almost always gets it spot on. After Sami he seems to speak the most sense of all our ex-players.

Guard of honour before the game? total joke. Do it after. Same for shaking hands before a game, another stupid idea.

Am I suprised by the utd players? nope. Evra is one of the most foul players ive ever seen in the prem (not the most foul as people like Barton get that tag).

    ReplyDelete
  54. if joe allen had actually been pushed up more into a "xavi" role, sahin would have been our alonso this year -.-

    ReplyDelete
  55. oddly the worst i have encountered in the prem are Arsenal fans. They seem to think that due to there team playing good football they are also the font of knowledge on all things football. I have had many a Arsenal fan lecture me on the ins and outs of Liverpool and which manager was rubbish for us and which was ok, even though I knew full well said Arsenal fans didnt even watch out games just saw the results on MOD.

    ReplyDelete
  56. thats gotta be the most likes you have ever got on a post jamie hahahaha

    ReplyDelete
  57. United are in a different stratosphere to you lot now. Focus on your team's mid table mediocrity, not our continued dominance of the premier league. Giggsy THIRTEEN! Gerrard NIL. OUCH

    ReplyDelete
  58. There's a few points to be made here.

    1) As someone said earlier, there's no set "rules" or "obligations" to the guard of honour.

    2) The Arsenal players must not have enjoyed that experience. I can imagine they wanted it over with quickly. What's the quickest way for the guard of honour to end? If the team receiving it (United) just walk through it pretty quickly. Which they did. It would have been a bit much if they had gone to each player and gave them a handshake, a hug or so on. Both sides just want to get on with the game.

    3) Also, there's no point in shaking their hands when only moments later, they'll be doing the exact same process.

    4) "Typical Man United. No class, no class, and sore winners (as well as losers)". The majority of time when someone says "typical X behaviour" it's for three reasons. A - The individual is incredible bias. B - The individual is talking out of their ass. C - This is actual typical behaviour. I think reasons A and B apply here. Seriously, this is a non-event, it makes you look obsessive. You're doing a disservice to Liverpool fans. This is Liverpool website. Not freaking "oh look what United did now which has nothing to do with us" site.

    5) In 2005, United gave Chelsea a guard of honour at Old Trafford. The Chelsea players did the exact same thing as United did on Sunday. It's not ungrateful in any sense, again, both teams just want to get on with the game.

Also, just because fans on the other side do the same, it doesn't justify you doing it and certainly doesn't mean you should. It's fun to poke at our rivals once and awhile when one of their players says something stupid and so on. But otherwise, you shouldn't really care what they are doing. If the other fans are obsessed with your club, so be it. Don't counter that obsession with obsession of your own.

I saw someone say this will attract more attention to the site, in a positive manner. Is this what you want to escalate the popularity of this site? A sensationalist story about something as unimportant about a guard of honour, that had nothing to do with Liverpool? This is the type of stuff 13 year olds on YouTube point and cry about it.

    ReplyDelete
  59. much ado about nothing

I don't see that as a lack of gratitude, I see it as not making a fuss out of it and just getting on with it. Chelsea were given a guard of honour by the team in question. Chelsea went through it and reacted it like Man United did last weekend. Man United gave the guard of honour in similar fashion to what Arsenal did last weekend.

I know its fashionable to have a pop at Man United but this is just scraping the barrel. Disappointing.
