LFC line-up vs. Newcastle: Should Rodgers drop rabble-rousing star...?

Liverpool face Newcastle United at St. James' Park this afternoon, and Alan Pardew's side will no doubt be buoyed by the absence of Reds' top scorer, Luis Suarez. How do the Reds reorganise after the loss of such an important player? In my view, it won't be as hard as many people seem to think.

First thing's first: Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has to ensure there's no mental hangover from the Suarez bite fiasco. Certain players probably feel a sense of injustice over the length of the ban (Pepe Reina, for example), but this lingering resentment cannot be allowed to infiltrate the dressing room.

What's done is done, and the team has to focus on being professional, and the goal must now me to finish the season as strongly as possible. With no wins in the month of April - and only one victory in the last five Premier League games - it is imperative that Liverpool get back to winning ways today, and given Newcastle's stuttering form, a win is definitely achievable.

As for replacing Suarez in the first team - with Sturridge around, it's not a difficult task. We'll probably see the following line-up:

------------------- Reina

Johnson ------ Agger ---- Carra ------ Enrique

----------- Lucas --------- Hendo

------------------ Gerrard

Downing -------------------------- Coutinho

----------------- Sturridge

Liverpool have to win the midfield battle, and with Moussa Sissoko and Yohan Cabaye pulling the strings for Newcastle, it's going to be tough. It will be interesting to see how Lucas does against Sissoko, a player the Reds should (IMO) have signed during the January transfer window.

Anfield legend Mark Lawrenson believes the Reds are in for a tough game, and predicting a 2-0 victory for Newcastle, he told the BBC:

"I think Newcastle will win this one. One or two [Liverpool] players look like they've run the race. Suarez will be really missed by his team-mates and I just have a feeling they will feel a little low and hurt. They'll all be looking around and thinking 'what will happen in the next few months?'"

If the players are 'low and hurt' and this translates into a poor performance, then Brendan Rodgers will need to take the blame for that. It's his jon to prepare and motivate the team, and if he can't do that, then he's not doing his job properly.

To be perfectly honest, if I was in charge, I would drop Pepe Reina for the unhelpful Suarez comments he made during the week. He added fuel to the media fire, and his negativity could have an adverse effect on his team-mates.

This isn't the time for recrimination and licking wounds; the players' first duty is to the CLUB, not the individual, and LFC must not suffer as a result of the lunacy of one player.

  1. I would go for a diamond midfield with Lucas, Gerrard, Hendo, Shelvey, Danny and coutinho up front

  2. i wouldnt mind seeing this actually.
Shelvey hasnt been playing too well as of late but he finds his way into the game and is hungry to get forward so why not

    ReplyDelete
  3. I agree with the team but I don't agree with dropping Reina, especially since he also committed his future to us this week. I don't think this would have a good effect on him and the GK position is one we could do without messing with this summer.
I would like Shelvey to get a chance today as he has had a hard time of it recently and showed some humility by asking to join the ressies to work on his game, where he has excelled!

  4. WIsh BR went for some fringe players .... since this is the last few games and now much to look for ....

    ReplyDelete
  5. id like wisdom to get a crack at Cb ...and play shelvey instead of lucas to see how hed be as a Dm ...why not we have nothing to lose

    ReplyDelete
  6. I feel the opposite Jaimie. I think we'll get a reaction. Sturridge loves being the centre of attention and I think hed like to prove himself without Suarez on the pitch. If Brendan sets the team up the way I think he will i predict goals from Coutinho, Gerrard and Sturridge. 3-2 to us. Tough game though. I have a sneaky feeling it could be a game with a freakish scoreline though with either team ready to capitulate due to fragile mentalities sfter the Suarez debacle and Sunderlands demolition.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Wouldn't mind Skrtel coming back in the team.

    ReplyDelete
  8. no confidence what so ever think we will lose newastle are bad but so are we and as for dropping pepe lol

  9. OH MY GOD! MICHAEL DAWSON JUST BIT KONE'S ARM!! 10 GAMES???
lol im just kidding, he just fouled him.
i wanna see me some Suso and maybe some Coady today. why you may ask? WHY NOT!! get em out there rodgers!

    ReplyDelete
  10. on another subject if gerrard needs an operation at the end of the season why as he not gone for it now or is rodgers fighting for his future so told him to wait till the end of the season the logical thing would be to have it now as to give him longer to get fit

    ReplyDelete
  11. I actually hope that BR will let Borini play since our season is already over. So I hope BR will give the youngsters a chance to play for the remaining games.

Good team :) but our midfield will need to work there socks off to contain there midfield. Really going to miss Suarez! But I don't agree about dropping Suarez he was just saying what everyone else was thinking...

    ReplyDelete
  13. good to see carroll score again today may be the only lfc player to get on the score sheet today hes been scoring a few latley would have been a decent plan b but we do not have a plan a ,so it doe,s not really matter

    ReplyDelete
  14. why not rodgers is trying to save the season every point counts it,s all about getting more points than last season hence it will be an improvement

    ReplyDelete
  15. You're to negative prone jaimie, sorry.
reina just commited his future to us, and I can't see any sense in dropping reina .. if Rodgers should drop him because of the Suarez-story it would mean he has to replace himself with Collin Pascoe lol. we all know we will be a different team without Suarez, the story is over he got he's ban (whatever its fair or not) and he's out now for the next months. Could we please forget about the story and focus on the positives?
    1. It will be interesting to see sturridge without Suarez, will he succeed? will he even be better than playing with him? Nobody knows - we will see. What we can say now, he loves being in the spotlight, so he will be hungry, undoubted..
    2. With Suarez not able to play there's again a bigger chance for our youngstars to come through. Assaidi sterling suso borini shelvey wisdom - I would love to see at least 2 of them comming on as subs :) !!!
    3. As you already mentioned Jamie the Lucas-sissoko fight is going to be very interesting and tough for our Brazilian, and maybe Rodgers gets in mind that how good a strong athletic powerhorse would do us in our team as a defensive midfielder.. would be interesting to play shelvey in that defensive position, eventho he's not one of the paciest(neither is Lucas) he has the physical attributes to shine in that position !!

Lets just show Alan pardew and son nouveaux chateau uni that we can also beat without Suarez !!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Nice ideas :) nothing to lose 100% agree with you, we should just try out new tactics and try to get as many confidence as possible for our players, to be prepared for pre season and the following year!! Would love to see borini comming as a sub. I have the feeling Lucas will get bullied by sissoko in midfield, so a good second half solution could be coady or shelvey

Shelvey effort is good, there's just a lack of output. I'm confident th. DM role could fit him

    ReplyDelete
  17. Funny thing, the last 20 minutes of some frustrating games (westham reading etc .... ) we put in loads of high crosses, but no one was there to convert them into goals... Were often playing like a Big Andy is standing up front, but always talking about how much he isn't fitting in our system , weird times

    ReplyDelete
  18. Actually I think you will have to bear with Rodgers at least another year Jason lol

    ReplyDelete
  19. he needed the game time though and he wouldnt have got it till today with us. Therefore prob would be match ready for us. I`m glad he is doing well at westham now. They are rising his price a little and helping him get matches. Personally I would loan him to them again next season if we dont plan on using him.

I cant see the point in selling him just yet as we wont get much but if he carries on like he is next season his value may rise. I also feel he is still 3 years off the normal age for his type of football to be peaking. We brought him way too soon.

    ReplyDelete
  20. agree on that. we have zero to play for. We aint getting fith or going above Everton so why not be smart and send Gerrard for his op now. it smacks of BR trying to get a few pointless wins in just to make his season look like it wasnt a massive flop.

    ReplyDelete
  21. yep up to the dizzy heights of 7th huh and ohh them cup finals... ohh hang on...

    ReplyDelete
  22. By the way jaimie, why are you always changing carragers and aggers position? Agger is always our cb on the left side while carrager is playing next to Johnson.. I've been asking this myself for a while now :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. nope dont drop Reina. Simple

    ReplyDelete
  24. what about when borinin was injured

    ReplyDelete
  25. i know m8 some of the games have just been kick and rush tikka takka my arse

    ReplyDelete
  26. rodgers must be feeling the pressure

    ReplyDelete
  27. yes guess were stuck with him unless madrid come in for him or mybe barca

    ReplyDelete
  28. Maybe Bayern too, heart guardiola isn't in their mind any more, they are more interested on stealing BR ;)

    ReplyDelete
  29. well done jaimie the exact team i wonder if newcastle have had time to do there homework ,because lets face it bar injuries they knew what the side would be after the suarez ban rodgers is so predictable,he could not spring a suprise if his life depended on it

    ReplyDelete
  30. No manager can smell which players get injured ;) not even ours !!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Were not playing tiki taka its more like a all players high up the pitch cause getting countered is so funny.
I just can't wait for sissoko outmuscling Lucas and cisse running through our defence ..

    ReplyDelete
  32. i agree but he should not have got rid of carroll till a replacement was in place thats negligence

    ReplyDelete
  33. lol fear the worse today imo the players have lost confidence in him

    ReplyDelete
  34. i know an you know that but its all about getting more points than kenny then the season as been a success to his diciples

    ReplyDelete
  35. ive wondered that as well ....if he goes s over badly on it it may defer the op ...make the op more complicated ..and have him miss the start of the season or the preseason it makes no sense at all

    ReplyDelete
  36. get in Hendo...how anyone can suggest playing allen instead of this kid is braindead

    ReplyDelete
  37. im not borinis biggest fan but the kid should be bought on win or losing and given 30mins...for me its all about next season now

    ReplyDelete
  38. fair point that.

    ReplyDelete
  39. ive said this all season some games we have lumped it down field all game

    ReplyDelete
  40. yep hendo is getting better by the week.

    ReplyDelete
  41. get johnson off and get wisdom on

    ReplyDelete
  42. newcastle have been pretty aggresive but Glen is treading a fine line now. We got them 2-0 down so no need for us to react to there bully tatics as that is what they want. We lose a man and its game on for them.

    ReplyDelete
  43. if we lose this they want shooting newcastle are awful its a shame because the geordies deseve better but my god there shite ,and i thought we were bad, also cannot see this ending 11v11 lol 2 could have gone by now

    ReplyDelete
  44. Finally something to smile about.

There is a need for Allen's subtlety and recycling at times but so too a need for the box to box variety of Hendo. Good on him. Regardless of how much the game evolves in the PL, in terms of taking influence from Spanish midfields and their possession use, there will always be a gap for the stereotypical English central midfielder from time to time, rightly or wrongly.

    ReplyDelete
  45. im not sure if we are playing well or Newcastle are playing bad ...but playing devils advocate say we score a lot of goals regardless if we win or lose the games as we play out the season and sturidge and co play well up front does anyone think this may prompt rogers ans fsg to cash in on suarez

    ReplyDelete
  46. lol they must be bad borini has scored...maybe our luck is turning ...well this makes up for the saints losing in london at rugby ...with a bit of luck now martin murray will bring home the goods in argentina .......BARMY ARMY

    ReplyDelete
  47. Their worst home defeat since 1925....That what I like to hear!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  48. So the fact that he is playing what is clearly our best available team is bad? you have complained about a surprise before when you thought it was bad

    ReplyDelete
  49. liverpool4life5657:26 pm, April 27, 2013

Come on!!!! 6 goals! Happy for borini too! Good football, looking forward to next season already! With more players coming in we can go for top 4, also 8.5 for coutinho looks a bargain. And Sturridge is brilliant.

    ReplyDelete
  50. well played hendos or coutinho man of the match for me sturridge played well as well newcastle were so poor its unbelievable ,you can only beat whats put infront of you would love the same score next week lol

    ReplyDelete
  51. Donna Air, Mark knopler, Alan Shearer, The slappers from geordie shore, Catherine cookson, Oz from auf weidesrehen pet, the likely lads. Eric polllards missus off Emmerdale. Ant and Dec...Ant and Dec. Your boys took a hell of a beating......YOUR BOYS TOOK A HELL OF A BEATING!!!

    ReplyDelete
  52. if rodgers picks him over hendo that imo is a sacking offence no discussion

    ReplyDelete
  53. sorry but no way was sturridge man of the match for me he was very good but coutiho or henderson were better

    ReplyDelete
  54. hes only made the mistake of playing allen instead of hendo ,so thats why ive complained because even a blind man could see that

    ReplyDelete
  55. lol its the chicken tikka takka

    ReplyDelete
  56. Not many comments post match, maybe the doubters are choking on their skepticism?

    ReplyDelete
  57. seems so :)

But to be honest, i wouldnt have expect that win, at least not that high :O. Newcastle not willing to fight more than 10 minutes. Dont like their french brigade - wouldnt mind them being relegated ;)

Brilliant game from Coutinho and Sturridge - and im glad to find Borini on the scoresheet too :)
Good game, but lets see how this is going to work out with suarez, if we manage to do the same performance we can say we can fight anybody next year without suarez.

Everybody knows you dont want suarez here jaimie - but dont praise to team to heaven now. it was "just" newcastle and their brigade of french speaking powerhorses completely out of pace... But its the first step to a team not relying on one player :)

  59. Have to agree mate, should be no hiding place, iv'e seen Borini for one and of course Rodgers for signing him get well slated on here. Let those who have eyes see ...... YNWA

    ReplyDelete
  60. Hold your hands up time my friend, as for the Legend Lawro ... he's a wa*ker

    ReplyDelete
  61. Yeah, great forecasting by the centre parted one

    ReplyDelete
  62. BREAKING NEWS: FA to suspend Borini after he bites his hand in celebration

    ReplyDelete
  63. As soon as I saw Borini I thought to myself, I see Borini scoring today and he did. I also said Henderson would score the freekick and his didn't disappoint. I admit I've had my doubts about Borini and today even without the goal his spacial awareness and his movement was first class, i hope we see more of the same!
To your last comment about Jaimie IMO I think we may be a better team with out Suarez? I know it's only one game but with Suarez we tend to try and play through him so can get a bit predictable but today with out him we had to play as a team and played through each other making a much more positive performance. I do believe we wouldn't have won 6-0 but who knows maybe we would have won by more as I stated earlier it is early days yet. In Brendan we trust.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Looking like they've run their race, low and hurt! Once again the (bitter) legend Lawro puts both feet in his big gob lol.

    ReplyDelete
  65. in happy to win but ...lets not get carried away they are in freefall Sunderland stuck 3 on them ....its the results against the top 6 teams which is a barometer of progress

    ReplyDelete
  66. toe poking a goal in a defense with more holes than a polo factory hardly makes him mario kempes...i hope he improves and does well ...what i dont want though ...and this goes for everyone in the squad is players playing when better players are on the bench

    ReplyDelete
  67. who knows, if we make a huge profit on him this summer i would still be happy, Maybe atletico orwhoever, would let him go for the asked 40m. Hes banned for such a long time - theres no sense to wait half a year for one of our most paid players.. As we see we can even win without him, but hes one of these players that can win you a game single handed, he did it often for us - but im not a fan of those "one man teams" we used to be. Cant wait for next week to see how we play against everton without suarez...

    ReplyDelete
  68. great win horse punchers 0 redmen 6!!!!!!

  70. I woz right about todays scoreline. Read below.

    ReplyDelete
  71. great fans those geordies they all f"cked off by half time for their tea me thinks there must have been a fishy on the dishy!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  72. ok we have won 6 nil, now lets come back down to earth!! Liverpool played well today but instead of being a game by game supporter i tend to look at the bigger picture. We have done this before this year against Swansea wigan and the mighty Norwich, all teams that are either mid table or fighting relegation. lets put this into perspective our only wins are against the following teams:

    Norwich x 2 (relegation contenders)
    Reading (relegation contenders)
    Wigan x 2 (relegation contenders)
    Southampton (manager got sacked)
    West Ham (Mid table)
    Fulham (Mid table)
    QPR (relegation certain)
    Sunderland (Manager sacked)
    Tottenham (Worth shouting about)
    Aston Villa (Relegation contenders)
Newcastle (17th best form guide , relegation contenders)

Now analyse above and calm down please!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  73. 1 in 10 games, injured for most of the season, yes he is class!!! an we should start a religion in his name!!!

    ReplyDelete
  74. mate, i agree but it was about next season 8 games in!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  75. In this case, if we try to play through Suarez too much, I think the issue is players who are afraid to take responsibility (like Downing and Hendo, who I like, but he isn't the most confident, it seems). Coutinho links up well WITH Suarez rather than deferring to him. The same is somewhat true of Sturridge. We need more players of their ilk, rather than less like Suarez.
I do agree that we can be too Suarez-centric though, but getting rid of him (for this reason anyway) isn't the answer.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Imagine if Suarez had stamped on a player or grappled with an opponent like tiote did today - all hell would have broken loose. Alas Tiote is a nobody and plays for an also ran club so it doesnt matter. HYPOCRITES.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Sturridge is alternately brilliant and infuriating. His decision making can be inscrutable. I hope some of his crap decisions were based on complacency due to Newcastle's awfulness. That isn't the best thing to hope for, but that is about as positive a spin I can put on some of the things he did.
Obviously the rest of his game was much better, He worked harder, ran the channels and held the ball up well. Good touch and finish for his 1st goal.
Coutinho was definitely man of the match. I just wonder how he'll cope next season when people mark him more tightly. That will be the real test.
Nice to see Hendo get two. One criticism of him was that he didn't score enough and I think you'd have to say he's answered that. I feel like his goal to minute ratio in the league will be pretty decent.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Interesting.
    Depressing.

    ReplyDelete
  79. I agree it may not be the answer as Suarez like Messi can go missing in games but within a blink of an eye he's scored a goal or even 2 but as you said players who are afraid to take responsibility are the issue and let's be honest there are a few players in our team who fit that description so with out Suarez they had to stand up and be counted for. It's a very difficult situation really but maybe if we can bring in some players of the same ilk we can be a force and not rely on Suarez all the time.

    ReplyDelete
  80. If we can do to Everton what we did today then I may be proved right but if we do struggle then I'll gladly say I was wrong and bow down to Luis well to an extent. I do agree though Suarez can change a game in the blink of an eye but at the same time sometimes he just seems to run into brick walls and has no alternative of getting around and that's when all the problems seem to come out.

    ReplyDelete
  81. can't remember calling him class, but the least he deserves is an opportunity to get a run of games and see what develops, but you go ahead and start your cult, plenty of nay sayers out there no doubt will join.

    ReplyDelete
  82. I'd say his goal was as difficult to score as any,but always willing to submit to the expert!

    ReplyDelete
  83. made my day lol

    ReplyDelete
  84. As I read all y'all comments it's pretty sad. Y'all sound like Blackburn and Chelsea fans!!! Just because y'all don't like the manager you rather have us loose so you can blame him for everything. I don't know if y'all reliazed that nobody is saying anything against what you all saying because you guys are just bandwagon fans and dreamers. Even the Legend wanted us to loose just because they don't want BR to have more points that King K! Honestly I think King K will be depress if he was ever read some of the stuff y'all are saying. Am glad we won and got maximum points at the end you beat the team in front of you. Only Man U have scored more goals than LFC if that is not progress then keep reading HISTORY and wishing upon the stars!!! Depressing!

    ReplyDelete
  85. We need to trust Sturridge & back him 100%

  88. Granted 0-6 is a fantastic result, it doesn't excuse the inconsistency throughout the entire season. If this result occurred a little earlier in the season then we could be more positive, but the season is all but over.

    ReplyDelete
  89. I've still got 10 bucks on Rodgers selling him.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Sounds too much like you want to hang on to the issue and keep making more of it. Rodgers and Ayre have both already talked about moving on, getting on with the job so I'm not sure why you're saying the issue still needs to be handled like there is some additional problem apart from the fact a player simply isn't available to the squad. It's not a soap opera, it's football, and the result showed precisely why nothing Rodgers, Reina, Ayre or anyone else was really as important as you make it out to be. The issue has been handled, so maybe if you stop harping on about it the rest of us can do the same. Great result from a team that clearly shows Rodgers tactics and team structure are working well, we just don't need to keep talking about Suarez even when he's not there. Let's focus on the football, for everyone's sake, please.

    ReplyDelete
  91. It's better than last season. All you can do is improve, a little bit at a time. We've moved past the total league points from last season with a few more games in hand. So if we end up 10 points better off that we were under Kenny then I'd say that is, in fact, something to put into perspective too. The negativity surrounding this football club has feck all to do with the mistakes the club is making, it's about the fans and the absurd reaction they have to their precious club not being in the top 4 for a few seasons. As if it's some major tragedy. It really makes me sad, despite our so-called spirit and support, Liverpool fans seem to be the biggest whingers of all! Get over it and just enjoy the football. We just thumped a team and all you have to say is "it's not really that good". The problem here is not to do with the club, it's to do with supporters like you.

    ReplyDelete
  92. liverpool4life5652:38 am, April 28, 2013

"Toe poke" erm it was a good finish, when he came on he had good movement, he is going to be a good player given time.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Are you Kenny in disguise ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  94. Liverpool are miles ahead of Newcastle and today showed it. Wouldn't really want any of their players, they're all average. To be beaten at home 0-6 ouch! They won't forget that beating in a hurry. Liverpool now have scored more goals than everyone bar United and have the second best clean sheet record too. Rodgers is shaping us into a good balanced team. Can't wait to see the summer buys if they're anything like Courtinho and Sturridge Liverpool will be after top 4.

    ReplyDelete
  95. so what one place higher in the league big deal no european football no silverwear progress do not make me laugh

    ReplyDelete
  96. why,s it time to hold my hands up thats the problem with this club and the rodgers supporters,we beat the worst newcastle team i,ve ever seen and suddenly were world beaters what about the rest of the season have you never heard the saying every dog has his day

    ReplyDelete
  97. lol it could happen but the lad is one of our beest players this season imo

    ReplyDelete
  98. mark do you realise we have only managed 2 wins all season against teams in the top half of the season we have beat the poorest teams well apart from that the seasons been rubbish

    ReplyDelete
  99. you are disgrace to your club, which ever you support.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Yeah but anything to get Allen in the team mate ;)

    ReplyDelete
  101. no i don,t think rodgers is that stupid if he dropped hendo and allen was his usual self even his most ardent supporters would be miffed

    ReplyDelete
  102. I guess we will see...

    ReplyDelete
  103. we certainly will ,be the end of the road for rodgers for me,and i think a lot more supporters

    ReplyDelete
  104. I'm not necessarily a Rodgers supporter l support the club and believe in trying to be positive.I don't ever recall predicting we'll lose before a game even starts. I also don't recall saying we're world beaters but l will support anyone at the club while he shows he's trying, until its obvious he's totally out of his depth. You said we'd get beat thus the hold your hands up.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Yeah you right! The fact that you are just becoming like a Chelsea fan that's what is sad!! You can keep moving the goal post or you want the fact is we are doing better than last year. If it will make you feel better I read that Man City is looking at BR and RB.

    ReplyDelete
  106. when you say man city are looking at br do you mean rodgers please tell me you do but a thought they got a new kit man last week

    ReplyDelete
  107. i do not move th goalpost you state if we get more points than last season its an improvement when have i ever agreed with you about that

    ReplyDelete
  108. We will make it to Europe with the fair play rule. Look at the stat JC, when it comes to goals we are second to Man U, Pepe is in the top 5 when it comes to shut-outs, Passes are better than last year. Defense have not done well enough and that's because a few issues. Get the right people on the team and we can be more consistent. And personally I think FSG will spent more because the financial fair play starts in two years plus the T.V. deal that the EPL got. Most teams did not want to spend because of that but I think the transfer market record will be broken this coming market.

    ReplyDelete
  109. sorry m8 we will have ti agree to disagree
