The end is nigh: Scouts sent to watch struggling €8m LFC star. Let him go...?

After a promising start to the season, Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has found himself struggling to hold down a regular first team place, and with competition in the Reds midfield increasing all the time, the 20-year old could soon find himself surplus to requirements.

According to a report in the Daily Mail last night:

"Stoke City are considering a...£7million swoop...for Jonjo Shelvey.

"[Stoke] are observing the 21-year-old’s progress [and] Tony sent a two-man party to watch [Shelvey] in a reserve match last week".

The writing seems to be on the wall for Shelvey. Brendan Rodgers doesn't seem to rate him that highly, and after a poor performance against Stoke, the manager seemingly exiled Shelvey from the first team, and the youngster believes he carried the can for the 3-1 defeat. He told The Independent last week:

"I played against Stoke and obviously I didn't have too great a game. I had a few personal issues that were going on in my life. I didn't think I was the only one that had a bad game that day but I was the one that suffered if you know what I mean."

Then, after being yanked off in the 60th minute of the Reds' recent 2-0 defeat to West Brom, Shelvey blasted fans on Twitter for giving him a hard time:

"Love people giving me stick .. When half of people on here haven't got a clue what they're on about. #welldone #keyboardwarriors"

I like Shelvey as a player. I love the fact that he's self-confident, and is not afraid to take responsibility on the pitch. He doesn't hide, and seemingly has no fear, as evidenced by his willingness to give Alex Ferguson a mouthful after he got sent off against Man United:

Maybe I shouldn't love this, but I do :-) Another moment that illustrates Shelvey's confidence came last season, when he berated Andy Carroll for not doing his job properly:

I have to admit, I loved seeing that; it shows confidence, and Shelvey is clearly not afraid to speak his mind and let his more expensive team-mates know the score.

Still, £7m (€8m) could be hard to turn down, and would boost the club's transfer chest for the summer. The question to consider is this: if Shelvey left, would it make a massive difference to Liverpool's results on the field? At present, you'd have to argue that the answer is no, and that - unfortunately - makes him expendable.

Sell...?

  2. I still think Shelvey could become a great player, i think a season on loan at another premier league club who can give him regular games would bring the best out in the lad. I feel if we sell him now we will live to regret it in the future.

  3. Sell?  Yes - his lack of pace will always prevent him from being anymore than a decent midfielder.

  4. I completely agree with your assessment on Shelvey. Have liked his attitude since the 1st time I saw him play. Not the finished article by any means but is always positive and helps to drive the team forward. I would be disappointed to see him leave as I do think he will mature into a good player but if Stoke offer 7-8 milion, the club will probably take it as I think we signed him for around the 1.5 million mark. If BR doesn't fancy him, he will have to move on for his own sake anyway.

  5. as long as it is not another tom ince, if we sell we need to get some good money for him as he has potential!!!

  6. Jonjo Shelvey is starlet on the making.LFC doesn't develop him with very good track.I think he is will be effective if will be given chance to playing at CDM position or defensive areas. With hard tackle and good size body, he is to briliant can assist or score many goal than Downing,Henderson, Suso,Sterling,Sterling and Lucas. He is more excelent players but playing at wrong position. We cannot simply to judge him.His record 5 goal this season so far, just second behind Gerrard and still too youngest,20year. What else we can give high expectation from him?I cannot stop if LFC still want to sell him,it is much2 better if we try to loan him again to another premier clubs.I hope WBA, Norwich or Swansea City will be destination to him.No need to rushing to sell out the bigger potential players. We must learn from mistake, please remember Tom Ince case. What happen now?Think carefully, action wisely.

  7. I said this yday he has decent strength, great passion but at his age his he severely lacking in technique. Close control, range of passing not great & I can't see it improving that much! I do agree he's a confidence player & with games he'll improve. BUT hand on heart is he good enough to take us to the next level, answer clearly is no!
He epitomises everything that's wrong with our English game where physical prowess trumps working on technique! No hard feelings, just not good enough!

  8. He's only 20.

I agree that for 7m, it might be tough to turn down, but I think that he just needs some time to get going.  Still too young to give up on in my opinion.
Admittedly, I'm of a frame of mind that we should try to let all of our young players develop until we feel that they aren't going to get better.  That goes for the Borinis, Shelveys, Hendos, Sterlings, etc.

I won't necessarily say that we should give up on any of our players as I feel like we've brought in some quality prospects in recent years.

In fact, the only player that I wanted gone the day he got here recently was Charlie Adam.

I was even willing to give Joe Cole and Aquilani more time to prove themselves.

Am I too patient?  Probably.  But our scouts obviously saw something in these kids, in this case Shelvey.  Let's give him some time to prove them right.  And he proves them wrong, sell him then.

  9. Sell without reservation he does not have LFC potential, ball skill and retention weak, passing under pressure is dire, does not press continually. His character was clearly shown versus Stoke and WBA when he made no effort and had little application to the LFC cause. SELL !

  10. I`d keep him, he is only 20, and looks ok for his age. I don` t think he should be starting 11, but def worth keeping, play him as a sub and in cup games next season, with the odd apperance in the league. That is still enough games for his age to help him grow. For first team we do need better right now, but he may in a couple of years become a very good player. He is useful for the squad, and can still learn a lot from being with us. I`m glad Br is looking to improve us in mid still, as even though we are ok there, we still need better players.

  11. Loan him to Stoke for the season....that way everyone wins

    ReplyDelete
  12. I would loan him out to a Premier League team - let him get experience. Kids got talent just needs game time.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Its an easy sell imo especially if that 7mil figure is accurate. He has ability, and has shown he can score but he's a squad player. His best production for us has been against teams we should be beating and against the big guns he's totally annonymous. My biggest issue though is his unwillingess to continually press the ball on the pitch. Watching LS and shelvey press the ball is night and day. He often looks like he's jogging on the pitch and almost always commits poor, frustrating fouls. Idk, I want him to succeed but I just haven't seen enough to indicate he can be a difference maker for us. Sell him to stoke or even better a part exchange for shawcross in the summer

    ReplyDelete
  14. That is a tempting fee, very but it does seem like our squad players will be mostly young players for the next season or two. So will most likely end up swapping him for yet another potentially talented but potentially inconsistent young player. Unless the club goes for experience with that money (which isn't a lot but there is bargains to be had), might as well as keep Shelvey as there is a good chance his young replacement would be frustrating too. Not totally sold on his fit in the side in the long run but still has some time.

  15. and lucas and allen are two greyhounds

    ReplyDelete
  16. I wouldn't be dying to get rid of Shelvey, but if we got £7mil, it'd let us restructure the defence and promote Suso/Teixeira in his place.

He could definitely be a good player, but his lack of pace means that barring an enormous maturation, he wont be a Liverpool player. He's rash and not significantly talented on a technical level to excuse his lack of effort relative to Allen and Hendo. Both of them can better translate Rodgers' ideas than Shelvey.

If he did leave, I'd wish him all the best.

    ReplyDelete
  17. imo shelvey as more chance of being a success at lfc than allen, but will rodgers see it the same way do not think so

    ReplyDelete
  18. I don't see the Tom Ince comparison?! Once wasn't given a chance whereas Shelvey has had opportunity to play, so we have a clearer picture on Shelvey. Since he has time on his side a quick sale may not be necessary unless it was for silly money. Nevertheless the next 2-3 years are crucial so perhaps a loan move is the best option. It seems the demand for LFC to improve means patience may take a back seat. Hence why we need a balance of youth & experience, to take the burden off the youngsters!

    ReplyDelete
  19. loan him out ....at present we have allen, lucas gerrad and shelvey and hendo in midfield....lucas and allen couldnt score in a brothel...gerrad is coming to an end that leaves hendo who rogers doesnt seem to want...if we have ant kind of injuries or suspensions we are f*cked

    ReplyDelete
  20. Shelvey is all about potential. He has aggression which is something we lack. however his performances have been below par - maybe he doesnt fit into BR's way of playing? He also has a poor final touch which has resulted in several gilt edged chances being wasted. Perhaps a loan move would be a better idea, similar to what chelsea did with lukaku.

Im not surprised that Stoke are looking at him, but I dont want to sell a player for 7 million only for us to have to buy him back for 20 million - a bit like ince!

    ReplyDelete
  21. for his age shelvey is a good player with bags of potential, the only thing letting him down is his sulkey attitude.
don't think we should sell, at least another season to give him a chance

    ReplyDelete
  22. for once you are speaking sense Jason. Shelvy like Allen may not be finding the back of the net on a regular basis but one can see the effects of his work. He has a definite presence on the pitch. He is a very physical player with a great work rate. Someone who can certainly win back possesion for your team or at least get the other team to make a mistake.

He is a lot like an English Javier Mashereno. May not create a lot of offence but doesn't mind doing the dirty work needed to win and keep possession for the team. It would be a shame to loose Shelvy while keeping Joe Allen or Jordan Henderson. Shelvy is a machine who sacrifices his body for the team. He would certainly be a coup for  Tony Pulis and stoke for 7million.

    ReplyDelete
  23. So what to combine your thoughts with Brendan Rodgers' thoughts, we have a Welsh Xavi and an English Mascherano on the same side!

How on earth are we in 7th place!?!?

    :)

    ReplyDelete
  24. Or send him out on loan and get him some regular first team experience

    ReplyDelete
  25. he gets a lot of stick for a 20 year old ..ive said this frequently rogers has his favorites who he molly coddles and can do no wrong even when its apparent to all and sundry they are playing crap

    ReplyDelete
  26. allen is 2 years older than shelvey and cost 12miliion more .....

    ReplyDelete
  27. In fairness, while he stuck with Allen and Sterling a bit too long, he has since benched them.

KK refused to bench Downing, Hendo, or Adam last year no matter how poor their performances were, and no matter how well often Kuyt and Maxi performed.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Well obviously you don't loan a player if you don't have adequate cover. Unless your a Andy Carol even then we tried to replace him with Dempsey but failed.

    ReplyDelete
  29. The article is about Shelvey, what is it with you and your own agenda over and over and over.  Shelvey is only 21 and as pointed out in the article is quite often mature on the pitch well beyond his years. The scouts who apparently watched him would have no doubt been very very happy with what they saw. I think he played in at least three different positions, after we were reduced to ten men, and was outstanding, carrying a lot of other supposedly future stars all night.Technically not brilliant, but a heart like a lion. Give Shelvey at least another two seasons before considering selling ... and stop with all your negativity man. Try picking a player who's just had a great game, smile, and write something positive.

  30. because paul scholes is all about pace (for example)
    clueless

    ReplyDelete
  31. He's a lot quicker than Shelvey, even in his late 30's...

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'm not saying that Lucas or Allen are speed demons, but I've seen cattle move faster than Shelvey

    ReplyDelete
  33. jonjo Shelvey is star on the making.Very sad to sell him. Please remember Tom Ince case.J.Shelvey have good record goal scoring midfielder (2nd behind Gerrard). He has good size physicall but playing at wrong position.I remember when era Roy Hodgson and Kenny Daglish, J.Shelvey playing for CDM or holding ball. That will be effective for LFC team.He has good tackle, briliant to move foward, can make many assist and can score the goal.He is not attacker player.B.Rodgers give him wrong position.More advantage if CDM can score the goal.Lucas now making many improve but still cannot score the goal.To sure his potential, please loan him to anothers premier league clubs.Better loan him at Swansea or Norwich city.We will see the true of quality for him.He also versatile player who can playing anywhere while needed.Good to replace Gerrard...please believe him.He is just 20year, need more times to be shining.

    ReplyDelete
  34. BR has come out publicly with statements in support of Hendo - his work ethic and technical ability.

    ReplyDelete
  35. gerrard should go first by his long pass and errors.

    ReplyDelete
  36. the club need cash to remove the dept so we can sell on players like reina, agger, gerrard, skrtel, enrique, johnson, allen ,borini, suarez, stturige, downing, caroll.we can prepare us not be relegated next year with the youth we have and found new buyers like arsenal.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Loan? I dont think its worth giving up on someone who is only 20 years old. We apparently want to build a team from younger players, well that wont work if we sell them.

    ReplyDelete
  38. omg, comments like this should put in a hall of fame!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Jason you want to jump in here :)

    ReplyDelete
  40. no i will leave this one well alone lol;-)

    ReplyDelete
  41. and your point is what ,or is it just a rant ,were did i say sell shelvey a$$hole

    ReplyDelete
  42. Point is simple asshole, why bring Allen into it.Cant you ever stick to the subject. Asshole!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Easy tweaked Mr Carr : ) (point is i like to hear you shout)  LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  44. so your original point was what, nothing

    ReplyDelete
  45. Have you seen his tackling?  Most seem to provoke a card of some colour.  He is a much better offensive midfielder and really needs an arm round his shoulder and being told he is wanted.

    ReplyDelete
  46. surely ur not classing shelvey as good as scholes either.... im not a fan of those boys down the road but scholes and shelvey shouldnt be used in the same sentance unless ones cleaning the others boots

    ReplyDelete
  47. sell both.... give coady and teixiera a chance instead theyre both grafters and have ability.... coady is better defensively than both and teiiera never gives the ball away so will fit in wonderful in brendans passing philosophy and he does it forward aswell

    ReplyDelete
  48. I think we could regret losing him. £7 mill is a good amount, but i think we should ask for £10 mil and see who is silly enough to pay. If not, then a loan would be good as hes 21, and did very well at Blackpool. He has a great pass on him and good shot. but touch is poor and his tackling worries me.

I like his attitude but he seems to think he has made it already, i dont know about his work ethic, but if its good then hes worth keeping. I see comparisons between him and Gerrard, who did some rash tackles early in his career.

Shelvey does seem to get lost in some matches, natural for a young player, but he does have good attributes. Ive seen a number of times he delays a second before shooting and this wastes the chance (may also be down to a poor touch). He needs experience at another team. Loaning would be a good option unless we get a good fee, part ex with shawcross could be good.

    ReplyDelete
  49. NO .... simply to hear you shout, surely you read the bit in brackets. As i said before you're to easy tweaked. Gift!

    ReplyDelete
  50. How can you attempt to compare someone who has had a full career with someone who's had three years experience. Try comparing Shelvey to Scholes when he's finishing his career not starting it.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Poor composure and technically very average. Fouls a lot but has a decent range of passing when given space. He's like a young Charlie Adam...

    ReplyDelete
  52. shelvey played well in the reserves but thats his level end of.... hes a good championship player.... if he becomes just half the player scholes is by the end of his career hed have done well... personally i think he'll end up playing in the championship maybe lower half prem all his career when he gets moved on

    ReplyDelete
  53. exactly, and his decision making is erratic.
id be happy to get 5/6m for him, 8/9 for henderson, 12/15m for carroll and 8/9m for downing, on top of the kitty.

    ReplyDelete
  54. My head hurts

    ReplyDelete
  55. Keep him, he's a good player. Lot of potential there, Rodgers just hasn't got it out of him yet, besides a couple of games early season. The only reason I'd consider selling is that he doesn't seem to have a position in the current tactical system .It's a bit disappointing that so many fans are against him. He's only just turned 21. Joe Allen is 22, Borini 21, and already fans are writing many of these off.Shelvey has 21 goals (6 for us) in 120 games, which for someone who has just turned 21 and a midfielder is pretty phenomenal. To put that in perspective, Steven gerrard had 1 goal at age 20.Amazing that some fans talk rubbish about him.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Shawcross is crap, just leans on people. Vastly overrated, dirty player.

    ReplyDelete
  57. At the moment is technical ability is wanting, I watched the North London derby last Sunday both teams showed lots of skill. I just couldn't see Shelvey competing. He needs games & with Coutinho already setting the standards he really should go on loan! I still don't think he'll improve enough to where we all want him to be!
Also whether he's an AM or DM above still applies!

    ReplyDelete
  58. He's a much better player than Allen and apparently he's worth £15 million according to Brendan. I like Shelvey a lot, he's not the finished article but what midfielder is at 20. You can't buy passion and he has bucket loads and does remind me of a young Gerrard.
We definitely should not sell him and certainly not for a few million. We have other players we need to move on before we start selling off starts of the future.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Shelvey will fit in perfectly at Stoke with the rest of their crap players. Bite their hand off Liverpool if they offer that kind of money for him.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I have more talent in my left toe.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Don't ever take up a job as a scout. Shelvey is not even average. LFC demand more.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Ah thats a bit harsh
