Lawro insists: 'Penalty killer' should replace £15m LFC star at Anfield. Agree...?

Speculation over the future of £15m-rated Pepe Reina has reached fever pitch this year, and it It seems inevitable that Liverpool goalkeeper will leave Anfield this summer. Who should replace him though? The likes of Victory Valdes, Asmir Begovic and Ali Al Habsi have all been mentioned, but Anfield legend Mark Lawrenson has a difference option in mind.

In his column for the Liverpool Daily Post this week, Lawro conceded that Reina 'could leave this summer', and named his preferred replacement. He said:

"Pepe Reina could leave in the summer. I wouldn’t criticise him for that. He has been brilliant for Liverpool but maybe it is time for him to move on.

"Michel Vorm is one that could fit the bill but Rodgers will have to be careful going back and signing lots of Swansea players"

Vorm - nicknamed the 'penalty killer' - was linked with a move to Anfield last summer, but nothing came of the club's alleged interest.

Rodgers has obviously worked with the Dutchman in the past so a move would certainly make sense, and Vorm - who is also on Barcelona's wanted list - is unquestionably a very good goalkeeper.

Vorm certainly has a lot or respect for Liverpool. After Swansea's 5-0 drubbing last week, he described playing at Anfield as a 'privilege', and hailed the club's 'amazing supporters', but described the defeat as the 'worst' game of his career. He told ThisIsSouthWales:

"If you play like this then you don't deserve to play at Anfield. Our mentality was so poor, and we could have lost 10-0. Everybody has to look in the mirror and ask if they gave 100 per cent.

"I always want to win and play well but, even if we can't win, I need to see more aggression and a better mentality. I'm sure I will not sleep for the next few nights because I can still feel it"

Vorm sounds like just the kind of strong character needed at Anfield, and considering the 29-year old only cost Swansea £1.5m, he'd probably be considerably cheaper than the likes of Begovic.

Worth a bid?

  2. What about this Ochoa from ajaccio is he really that great ? I've never seen him play

  3. Lawrenson is a phoney not worthy of the legend title, legends stay loyal.

  4. He, or someone of his age, could be an option should we sign many young centre backs. There needs to be some experience at the back. Otherwise I will repeat myself again naming younger candidates in ter Stegen, Bernd Leno, Kevin Trapp, maybe Oliver Baumann. Always like Lloris, but he's elsewhere now. Can anybody come up with some more talent from the continent?

  5. LFC must searching for replacement for goal keeper Doni not to sell out Pepe Reina.Reina is still number one goal keeper for LFC team.Every people make a mistake, not fair to blame only for one players. Why not try to arguing Downing,Henderson, lucas performance???Untill now only 1 goal they already score.Lucas,no goal yet this season.

  6. Pepe has been poor for ages - time to get rid.  We have enough threads and moans about Downing and Hendo so no more please. Lucas is hardly going to score many from where he plays and how much has been injured.

  7. Nope, you named the best imo. Maybe because we pointed them out together :)
Vorm has experience in the pl same with begovic. Those two are experienced and strong gks, and if we go for young new cbs we should at least to get some experience in the gk spot.

  8. I don't know if you watch the lfc matches, but if you do so you must be blind. Hendo performs consistent and pretty well this season, downing is still bad imo but even he does get better, Lucas was injured for a long time, but helps really a lot to our fluent game. Don't blame the performance of Lucas and hendo . Lucas is just getting back to his form, and is still one of the most important players on the pitch, while Henderson is still young and a really motivated player.
The fact is, reina is getting older and older, while Jones doesn't get younger too. A younger goalkeeper will be essential for us to bring in a new competition at some time. Right now our team played well over the last 7 games (with one exception: against WBA and Zenit in Russia we were bad) fact is you're blaming our midfield and offensive guys, while the defensive errors in our team are costing us the points we should get. (Mancity arsenal wba...)

  9. i was one reinas biggest fans but hes gone......ill be honest i never wanted Liverpool to sign downing or Henderson as i never rated them but this year they have been outstanding IMO

  10. Lawro just likes the sound of his own voice and anything he says should be taken with a kilo of salt never mind a pinch.  Reina's age is said to be coming into their prime for Goalies. As someone else pointed out BR is looking for a replacement for Doni after his heart attack (may YNWA mate). Jones can only ever be considered as a third choice keeper.  Gulacsi is a cracking young keeper who when Doni is replaced should be pushed up to third spot.

  11. pepe is world class he stayed with us when times were hard if he has some blips so what he,s pulled off some very important saves for us the grass is,nt always greener on the other side yeh he speaks out sometimes but so did gerrard they have both thought about going but a still here thank you pepe we love loyal players real liverpool fans anyway.lfc til i die

  12. Dont think downing is outstanding. Imo hes average, but he deserves the starting place as long as he performs on that level. at least he's a little bit older and has some experience. Think liverpool fans say he's outstanding because he was a joke last year, so they are happy he's at least doing anything good

  13. Oh pls... not another player he worked with before...Pepe was winning us games and cups single-handedly way before the sugar coated peanut manager made his name. Anyone knows what is worse than sick? I'm feeling just that now...

  14. Vorm is no improvement from Reina; he himself 'll be almost 30 when next season starts & could be risky, if he also starts to decline after 30, like Pepe.  I don't rate GKs on their penalty saving capabilities.  Penalties are few & far between & if your defense concedes penalty frequently, shouldn't expect your keeper to save 50% times.

I want the next LFC keeper in the mold of the great ugly Dane or our bitter rival - strong, dominating & a real bad mouth to shape his back line.  Pepe was really poor in air & tries to make that up by punching hard but I always feel nervous for cross or corners.  At 183 cm, I don't think Vorm 'll be that good in air either.

Gradually GK has become a 5th defender, often a sweeper back.  One thing Pepe was & still is brilliant, probably one of the best in the world is setting up attack from long throw or clearance.  Our next keeper must have to be good at this.

Lawro is too narrow in his focus, hardly looking outside UK; I believe there are available Keepers, who all are over 6'3", young & potentially better than Pepe or Vorm; & they 'll cost less than the 15mn we are expecting from Pepe, you just need to look in Germany & East Europe.  However, if we replace Pepe with Al Habshi, I 'll rank FSG & BR with the level of G&H & Woy Hodgeson.

  15. Ah I wouldnt say he'll go in the summer,I could be wrong but I dont think he will unless his form seriously drops again for the next 11 or so games,That said I would love to see Ter Stegen signed but there's probably not much chance of that unless we finish top 4 which will take nothing short of a miracle

  16. Pepe Reina is a top top bloke, love the guy to bit's BUT sadly, inevitably his time has come to move on...

    * wipes tear from eye * * get's hanky out of pocket * * blows nose loudly *

    * farts * * forgets what he was talking about *

Oh, yeah, Vorm looks pretty decent, shame we couldn't have got him in last summer.

  17. Exactly.......I find it amazing that the teams linked with taking an interest are Man U, Barcelona and Arsenal.
    Mind blowing imo.....

  18. What cups has he won single-handedly for us?

  19. GK need to be comanding, direct defenders and rally on the team. That's where a young GK finds it difficult unless there of a rare natural footballing abbility. Reina came to Liverpool at fairly young age. The fact that he was able to sort out the defence and tell players what to do (take into consideration some palyers where much older than him) was quite rare for him to settle in at the pace he did. Usually most young goalkeepers can't do that. That's why I feel who ever replaces Reina if that's what is going to happens will have to be expericend. I just can't see a youg GK shouting and telling the likes of Gerrard, Leiva, Agger, Skrtel & Johnson what to do and where to be positioned.

  20. This is one of them no win things for Rodgers, he signs Vorm and people say, cant he find players form clubs he didnt manage, he dont sign him and people say, Reina needs replacing, what is Rodgers doing.

Reina has been great for us, and stuck with us during the bad times, but his form has dropped last couple of years, just like the rest of the teams has. It might be time to replace him. If we do though, I would like a experienced keeper if possible. Goal wise we are fine. Its the amount we let in which has been our problem for a few months now, we need to address that, and it happens Reina is one of the things which needs addressing, along with a new CB, and maybe a new DM.

  25. Good point, but i still think that Vorm would have been a lot better than Reina and Jones this season....

I think we need 2 new goalkeepers tbh, even Spurs have got 2 decent keepers in Brad Jones and the young french fella....

Lawrenson is a horrible person,he twists and turns when interviewed,he is rotten to the core.I remember when he was linked with manutd and i saw him in his car 20 miles from liverpool on his way to manchester probably. He is despicable always putting LFC fans down, saying when John Barnes signed LFC fans ripped their season tckets up in front of him cause he was the oposite of white but when he became a hero they were begging for the tickets back,,and Lawrenson said the club said no way go away, your not getting your season tickets back.Lawrenson is not LFC he really isnt

i have been told Al Habsi will sign in the summer.I agree with you he isnt upto LFCs standard yet reinas on £90k a week and Al Habsi will take £40k a week, throw in Reinas fee will be £14m and we buy al habsi for £5m you can see the yanks are a business which they are

  29. I laugh when people say Reina is "getting older", using this as an excuse for his downward spiral of form. Please. This is just the ripe age for goal keepers. Most of them still have another 10 years or so left! Who knows why Reina has lost his goalkeeping gloves, but he needs to go.

  34. I know you can't judge a player from a YouTube highlight reel but I really like what I've seen of this kid.

For those who have never seen or heard of him before, may I present to you, Marc-Andre ter Stegen:

  35. Word filter caught my last post!

Marc-Andre ter Stegen should replace Reina. There's a lot of reports of a pre-agreement with Barca but they're not binding when a player has over 18 months left of his contract. So, in light of their apparent interest, I think, if we have to sell Reina, then we make a case to the Catalans to spend £15m on him and invest that money in the young German.

  36. You guys can keep your hands off Dunedin Technicals [New Zealand] new goalkeeper, we've signed him from Ryan Nelsens [nz] club.
Best GK in NZ [quote from guys in the same and opposing teams] with the safest pair of hands in the ASB Premiership.Oh and he won't cost any more than an airfare to Liverpool as he's an amateur player. He's way better than Brad Jones both in the air and with ball at feet.
Note aside. Burnley have just got Academies up and starting in April in both Christchurch and Dunedin to find NZ youngsters such as Nelsen, Wood and Reid.
Chelsea and Everton are also in over here and aligning with schools/clubs.
Liverpool can't be bothered to look outside the EU.

Just because Vorm only cost Swansea £1.5M doesn't mean he will neccessarily be cheaper than Begovic. I imagine Vorm is as valuable to Swansea as Begovic is to Stoke. Going on Allen's fee and the reported valuations of Williams, Swansea don't exactly give their players away.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I agree. His heart doesn't seem to be in it anymore.A move would suit both parties with Vorm providing that steadiness at the back. When keepers have a shaky stretch it makes the defenders nervous and error prone.Stop the rot ! Vorm in the Summer. Pepe back to his homeland. YNWA

    ReplyDelete
  40. Totally agree with you. I've always backed Reina because he's done so well for us and become the kind of loyal player you don’t find in football anymore from foreign players. Having said that, even I have to put up my hand an acknowledge that his time might be up based on mistakes a top keeper should never be making. I can only hope that BR takes his time in making this decision because, imo, left back and gks are the hardest positions to find solid players in the modern game. As good as Man Utd are, they still have a big achilles heel in Goal and they have never really been able to replace Schmeichel. I don't think anyone can really question SAF ability but even he's not been able to solve that positional problem. Reina gave us 5 good seasons where we never worried about our gk which is rare in general. He instilled gk trust with his defenders and thats why we were usually consistently one of the better defences in the league those 5 years. He's losing it now and we can see what that does to our defensive concentration. Just want to make sure that we don't find ourselves settling for a mediocre keeper or even worse, going through multiple ones in the coming years.
