'We can't pay them' - LFC to raid cash-strapped club for €6m South American star

The January transfer window may be closed, but the transfer merry-go-round never ends, and with the Reds currently languishing in mid-table Premier League obscurity right now, the search for new blood continues. To that end, Liverpool are reportedly set to capitalise on Malaga's financial woes with a summer bid for Chilean midfielder Manuel Iturra.

According to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Liverpool are interested in signing the 28-year old - who only joined Malaga in August 2012 - and the La Liga club is willing to accept an offer of €6m for the Chilean international.

Malaga are suffering ongoing financial problems at the moment, which could mean they're forced to sell players in order to raise money. The club has already raised £20m over the last year with the sales of Santi Cazorla and Nacho Monreal, but the problems continue, and director of football Mario Husillos confirmed this in an interview last week. He told Football-Espana:

“We must reduce the wage bill. No club in the world can afford to pay players if they do not have the income. We’d obviously like to buy the best, but with what we bring in we can't pay them"

General manager Vicente Casado added:

"The feeling that we are destroying things, that it is the end of an era, offends us. It is the construction of a building. We are not destroying it. We are exercising responsibility in the face of commitments we have. There is one game on the pitch and one in the offices.”

Wise words, which could equally apply to Liverpool's financial prudence under FSG. In a recent interview with Yahoo Sport, former Manchester City striker Roque Santa Cruz highlighted the impact of the problem on Malaga's players:

"It’s a difficult situation here. The financial situation has an influence on the future of the club, on me and on the other players. There’s no security about which players arrive or leave. It’s a difficult situation which the club has to resolve as soon as possible."

Casadao insists that no players will leave this summer, but with the club in dire financial straits, he may have no choice. With that in mind, is Iturra the kind of player Liverpool should be pursuing?

The Chilean can play as a defensive midfielder, and Reds desperately need another quality option to compete with Lucas. To be honest though, I'd rather the club went for a strong, athletic Moussa Sissoko-type, i.e. a player who could bring something completely different to the table.

  12. I don`t think either owners will get bored. Chelsea`s owner has been there a decent amount of time now, and still seems pretty happy, and Cities owners seem to have brought the club to help push there countries profile just like Dubai did when it changed its strategy, to find other ways to make money as there oil runs out, aka toursium and business. I think both sets are in it for the long haul, and although FFP is starting to take effect, there is still many ways a owner can fund the club, and rightly so imo. The idea of FFP is to stop clubs going under, and if a owner is happy to use there own cash, rather than loans then it seems fine to me.

  29. Haha..The problem with the team is that they doesn't go for good foreign players..they love buying British shits! British Player doesn't have experience..They are only good in devence and not in attack!  We really need to get rid of those British players and buy some quality and experience players and not these little age players..Grow up Liverpool!
