Game over: BR desperate to sell €9m LFC star in the next 72 hours.

In December, reports in Brazil claimed that Sebastian Coates' father had met with several Brazilian clubs to discuss the possibility of a transfer back to South America. Speculation over the defender's future has continued into the January transfer window, and it looks like his time at Anfield could soon be up.

According to The Mirror yesterday:

"Sebastian Coates is a £7million target for Brazilian club Gremio.

"The Reds would happily sell, but they face a problem over the timing of the deal.

"Gremio can sign Coates AFTER the European window shuts as their deadlines are different, so they [Liverpool] will ask Gremio for a concrete bid in the next 72 hours".

This comes hot on the heels of a recent report in Brazilian newspaper Folha de S.Paulo, which stated:

"Santos are targeting Coates, who is also coveted by São Paulo. Coates' father recently dined with members of the Santos hierarchy, who expressed an interest in bringing the player back to South America in January".

Recent reports in Italy, Portugal and the UK also claim that Coates' future at Liverpool is far from secure:

"Liverpool are in the market for a centre back with concerns over the future of Sebastian Coates. The Uruguay defender is attracting interest from Italian clubs. Juventus are among them as they look to replace 34-year-old Lucio".

Coates is definitely unhappy at his lack of playing time at Anfield, and he made this explicitly clear in an interview this week:

“I’m going through a complicated moment here at Liverpool. I want to play for the Uruguayan national team and I must play for my team to achieve that. I do know the other defenders are playing really well and I must wait my chance. But, again, I want to play now.”

Coates - who signed for LFC in a £7m (€9m) deal in 2011 - has made only 10 starts since signing for the club, and with the first-choice partnership of Martin Skrtel/Daniel Agger firmly entrenched at the club, that's not going to change for a while yet.

Liverpool have been linked with quite a few central defenders over the last year, which suggests that club is not entirely convinced that Coates is a long-term solution, and after the poor performance he put in yesterday against Oldham, his time at Anfield must surely be coming to an end.

If Liverpool sold Coates for £7m, and used the money to buy Swansea's Ashley Williams, I think most fans would be happy with that.

  1. Not really confident Williams would come to us as he hates Suarez

  2. I bet Suarez wouldn't be happy

  3. He wasn't signed last summer, but in 2011.

I am probably not the only one who's had high hopes for this lad who'd been voted young player of the Copa America the year he signed, but he has never really show why he won that accolade when playing for us. Hope we can recoup the majority of what we've paid for him and invest in a more talented centre back. There are quite a few available in France and Germany for instance.

  4. Get the hopeless owner to put some money up for once with out selling players to buy players we have had enough .
We are living of sponsors dollars .
We had Alonso Torres mascha arbeloa Gerrard johnson.
Now we have johnson gerrard suarez .
Last year we were in two finals this year nothing what has changed the talk is better . Ian Ayre and owners talk a good talk simple stevie gerrard deserves to win premier league for his service to club.
And when we lose suarez like torres we will all cry again.
FSG are the peter pan of football

  6. After yesterdays performance I would let him leave today on a free transfer if needed!!!

  7. what the f"ck did rodgers play a player he says is not good enough for lfc,he picks the team bloody clueless,on another subject see allen is coming out with statements trying to take the heat of rodgers, well m8 your not good enough either, take, rodgers back to swansea with you on your way out,and if you want to do anything for lfc try and get them to pay 4 million for borini whilst your at it

  8. He looks very rusty yesterday as he didn't get playing time.He needs more games.

    ReplyDelete
  9. more like the jimmy savile, everyone thinks there going to fix it but at the end of it all we will be in for a nasty shock

  10. Coates is really quite poor. Not as good in the air as he should be for someone of his height and limited speed and agility. Add to that the expected lack of communication due to his limited English and you wonder why the hell we bought him. The lack of pace is so blindingly obvious that it really brings into question yet again, which narcotics were our scouts and the others responsible for signing players consuming?
Williams would be a decent bet and on current form, would add good competition to Skirtel and Agger, but more importantly he would add a much needed vocal presence to our quiet team.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I doubt Willaims would come to Liverpool. He must know he won't be first choice. Plus he seems like a bit of a tool and a mouth and will moan if he is not first choice. Prefer if they bought another young centre half...

  13. And sell that misery allen as well, robinson should never play for this team again, jones wtf happned to you? We thought you were better than reina! Borini my Lord 13m can u imagine that? Sterling sh.i.te again, these kids are killing us FSG WAKE UP STOP THE POLICY WE NEED EXPERIENCED PLAYERS WHO CARES ABOUT THEIR AGE

  14. He's playing football on the training pitch every day. Hardly an excuse for being that rusty.

  15. The Manager is a coward - he and he alone was responsible for that defeat he never played a link up atting midfielder Gerrard or Shelvey just to accomodate the two flops he has bought Borini and to a lesser extent Allen, HIS TACTICS HIS POOR SELECTIONS. Thats no problem if he owned up like a man.

  16. RODGERS IS A COWARD, IT WAS HIS FAULT.

  17. Sebastian Coates is star in the making who have special talent but need to been polishing very until shining very well. How can we aspect the biggest contribution from him if he only playing not many games?Wisdom also getting good, why??Because he always playing for many games and sometimes make a mistake to.UNFAIR TO SELL OUT COATES.

    ReplyDelete
  18. did you watch skrtel yesterday? if yes you can see he needs a lot of competition. its really important to have 3-4 defenders fighting for the 2 league startnig places, sometimes we play with 3 cb then we need at least 1 to cover. Coates is far away from any role in our squad. We should get him out.

Wisdom/Johnson - Skrtel/Williams/Carrager/Agger -Johnson/EnriqueThose 4 CB shoult rotate all the time, depends on which team were facing .. Skrtel is strong, but isnt a great footballer IMO, yeah hes a good defender, but he´s lacking when it comes to passing ... Carrager is a bit rusty, but hes still our bigmouth that tells what to do, and this is important. Agger is perfect with the ball knows how to pass ... And Williams could be the perfect 4th defender to have a competition with the others..

    ReplyDelete
  19. Not convinced by Coates at all, I would sell him to be fair!!!

    ReplyDelete
  20. COATES AND ROBIBSON ARE NOT WORTH 9 PENCE BETWEEN THEM AND BRENDAN NEEDS TO BLOODY WAKE UP

    ReplyDelete
  21. I bet Suarez won't care as long as he's winning.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Coates cant head a  ball is a natural coward and you lot keep saying he is a star in the making - WAKE UP BOYS

    ReplyDelete
  23. Relax people, Williams is just an easy name for the presshounds to throw out there. As for Coates, shame. He seemed so composed and solid at the Copa America a few years back but he never really settled at Anfield. Now we may end up with some lumberjack.

    ReplyDelete
  24. You can polish a lump of sh*t all day mate, it will still be the same at the end of it, coates took a whack of a 3 tier journeyman then his bottle went, the guy trains & practices every day yet people say about being rusty, lol!! he wasnt coming back from injury, he,s just sh*t!! If some mug club offered anything near what we paid for him lfc should bite their hand off

    ReplyDelete
  25. With Carra getting on the need for 2 C.B. at seasons end is a must 3 mill is the reported price for Fazio and someone like Musacchio may be value.
The likes of Kelly and Wisdom may also get their chances anyway i do not see a future for Coates under Rodgers.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Everybody make a mistake but UNFAIR to blame only Coates.Second goal mistake from Brad Jones to cacth the ball.LFC Left and right defender oftenly failed to blockING Oldham winger to movement. They got many freedom to cross and making try the ball.B.Rodgers also always like to do crazy experiment with ridiculius formation. At Old Traford B.Rodgers used formation 4-5-1 to playing at away venue. Now he try crazy formation 4-2-4.What kind of this formation? This game he must give Coates to get partner with Carragher because if you are using many young foward players, much better to let used 1 or 2 senior players for more secure and save.LFC like to used and change many crazy tactical formation.Let the players get comfortable with only basic formation first. I cannot understand B.Rodgers making many tacktical and worried some players cannot deliver with many instruction and tactical.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Andre Wisdom and Marin Kelly are actually CENTREBACKS who can play right back maybe we don't need a replacement

    ReplyDelete
  28. Not too sure about A.Williams. Would prefer us to get Fazio. Either way, Coates is the wrong player for us.

    ReplyDelete
  29. seem to be forgetting martin kelly is actually and CB so is there really a need for a new centre half

    ReplyDelete
  30. I had high hopes of Coates... But he is sluggish and too slow... He's clumsy with the ball too... He committed a handball yesterday after controlling the ball like ballet dancer... Sell him!! N while we are selling, sell Robinson too... He actually had the nerve to swear at our star striker yesterday. Robinson, wisdom, coates are not and never will be good enough for lfc... Their performance yesterday had me fuming...

    ReplyDelete
  31. why did rodgers let wilson go out on loan if he wants to sell coates, and yet he still moans about squad size ,hes full of it,and the nerve of him to blame the young players he picked,i suggest he has a look at the big picture in his lounge then he will see the real cause of the mess were in ,not that is ego would ever let him take one ounce of blame, for anything that ever happens,

    ReplyDelete
  32. Not easy to show your ability, when you haven't been played a lot, let alone been given a good number of consecutive games, at his stage in his career but that was just horrible from him yesterday, absolutely horrible. Too many basic errors and the lack of presence was alarming. That chance Simpson had (just before he got subbed) after a long ball was punted forward and flicked onto Simpson, Coates didn't seem to have a clue where he was initially and Simpson got a head-start far too easily. Slow, cumbersome, dodgy positioning and weak presence in the air. Not a good combination for a CB. I do have some sympathy for him, in relation to lack of games as well as Rodgers' tactics, especially without Lucas, can leave CBs very exposed (hence, imo, Skrtel looks rather average), which is a nightmarish situation for a inexperienced CB but that was rubbish, that performance yesterday. He is that tall, yet so timid.

  33. All  in all it comes down to the fact that Oldham gave us a damn good thrashing at twice the speed we were dithering around at!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I,ll probably get slaughtered for it mate but rodgers never had the pedigree in the first place to get the job, to me it sent out a clear message that we had gone downmarket, i try to support the club still but i really cant see us ever winning fu*k all with this guy in charge & at the end of the day isnt that what lfc were always about, winning trophies?

    ReplyDelete
  35. I love it when everyone says give Coates time...  We ain't got time! Just like Mr Rodgers is running out of time.... Sick of Rodgers blaming the team. He's the manager. He picks the team. He got it wrong again at the w/end. It's about time these American Owners understood what this club's about! No more crap managers & players....  :(

    ReplyDelete
  36. you will get slaughtered for it m8,i,ve been saying it since day one and get slaughtered for it every day ,strange how quite it as been today though ,never mind the rodgers lovers will be back next time we beat an average team ,screaming for there messiah to be given time ,and how hes taking the club forward, and your right we will win f"ck all with him in charge we won,t even get close

    ReplyDelete
  37. MORE games? Do you want to get relegated just to make sure that Coates got enough games?

    ReplyDelete
  38. maybe, but that doesn`t always relate to real game time, there is loads of players who train every day but don`t get games who look rusty for first few when they do get a run out. I guess a real game has so much more to it that a training field can never reproduce.

    ReplyDelete
  39. In fairness he wasn` t the only player who looked poor yest. Robinson and jones were too, amongst a few others as well. Don`t get me wrong, I agree Coates doesn`t look good right now, but yests game was full of players who can play better.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Sometimes its not about loving, but just supporting who you got. Rodgers really wasn`t high up on my list for managers I wanted, and nor is he now, but he is here, so I will support him. That don`t mean I wont say when I think he makes errors, but I wont just bash him for the fact he was given the job. I aint no Chelsea fan.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I agree he does look a bit lost when he plays, I also agree due to him not playing much that maybe a part of it. I don`t think the tatics help any defenders in the central role. Dispite not doing well last few years, we normally have a solid defense, that same solid defense ships in loads of goals know, and for me, tries to many passes, when sometimes a good old boot would work. I get the idea behind it, that if the other team don`t have the ball they can`t score, but I also think the other team can`t score if the ball is in there end, no matter who has it. Law of averages tells me, no matter how good you are, you will misplace a pass every so often, and if your a defender, who has been told to pass it out, and around to keep the ball, that misplaced pass will cost a lot more, possibly leading to a goal. I don`t want hoof ball, but something in the middle, where if its safe we pass it, if not we clear it (still aiming to hit our own player of course).

  42. BR is clueless. Yesterday's game has got to me more than any other so far this season. No positives whatsoever.
When Suarez leaves and Gerrard retires we will be totally screwed and sitting firmly in 10th. Lovely. Thanks FSG.

    ReplyDelete
  43. The toffs will sign a £7m bruiser. All we have is light weight midfielders who are blown off the ball to easy. BR philosophy is beginning to irk me.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Williams wont come because he may not be first choice and besides isn't he 28? to old for fsg!!

    ReplyDelete
  45. i think the majority will agree with you. BR is out of his depth.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I agree. Training and playing are 2 different things. although he needs more aggression which he lacked. I would prefer a loan rather than a sale.

    ReplyDelete
  47. actually Coates does have time, he isn`t in the first team currently, so sending him out on loan, wont really affect us that much anyway, not like we will miss him. If him then playing week in week out somewhere else, brings his game up, thats great for us, if it don`t then we can sell then.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I have to agree with you. spot on. Buck just fucked up on this game.

    ReplyDelete
  49. My biggest issue with BR is he seems to talk too much.  The Being Liverpool documentary was embarrassing in that regard.  And shame on the organization for putting itself in that position.

I'd prefer the manager keep as much as possible behind closed doors.  But I also want him to hold his players (and himself) accountable when appropriate.

I think it's good for him to lambaste the players yesterday for their effort.  He's correct. They are to be held accountable and they have to know that.  But I'd prefer that he go about it differently, not looking like he's throwing his guys under the bus.

Say little to the press so that they can't use your words against you.

Brings me back to when he said a month or two ago about how we wanted to challenge for second.  In reality, he didn't say that. The press merely took one sentence completely out of context and made it sound like he was proclaiming something magical to happen.

BR still needs some time.  He's only been here for just over half a year.  If we go out and perform well with positive results in these next two games, no one will care about yesterday's result.

    ReplyDelete
  50. KK's signing. He is Dispensable. every new manager comes in wants his own players. Buck is no different.

    ReplyDelete
  51. People who think training is the same as playing has never played football. Training with team mates and playing against another team are totally different. If anyone watched him play for his country they would realise he is a really good player. Loan him out, but don't sell him.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Buck should stand up and admit he fucked up big time.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Is that why they're spending so much money on youth players?

    ReplyDelete
  54. hope your right m8 but i have lost all hope in him

    ReplyDelete
  55. unfair to sell coates .have to agree . i suppose we have to charge a fee . me i would pay another club to get the big useless lump away asap. feel sorry for the fans of his new club havin to watch that donkey  evey week.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Yesterday he has looked like he's never played football before. Training every day should at least mean that a player is physically and mentally fit to play when asked to. I've had high hopes of him, but from what I've seen so far, this was nothing but wishful thinking from my side.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  63. lol need some humour on here tonight still depressed after than shower of s"it that rodgers calls a teams performance yesterday

    ReplyDelete
  64. Time will tell I guess. I find myself split on it a lot. At times I think, yea I like the look of the team, I like the style of football, the youthfulness of the team, and idea of running at a profit, and at others, I think about how far we have fallen, and how we as a team/ ownership and fans, seem to have accepted mid table football. I do feel fed up of feeling like the club is lying to me all the time, saying we can sign anyone we want, compete with the best, or we will get in a few more, then don`t. This does make me feel massively mugged off as a fan, however I guess for me it is more a case of "I want to believe" as if I didn`t things would all seem very grey.

    ReplyDelete
  65. i'm clearly not most fans, because i dont want ashley williams, and i dont specially want rid of coates. the striker used coates to get elevation for the first oldham goal so he couldnt jump. he actually won the aerial battles when he wasnt being fouled but for some reason this wasnt picked up on. does anyone know how hard it is to a. impress in a game when you never hardly ever play and b. impress in a game on a poor pitch, poor conditions, and against opponents who get away with being more aggressive and the team just hoofs it forward all the time. its a bit unfair to single him out, imo robinson, sterling, skrtel, jones, wisdom, borini and sturridge were all dreadful and allen and suarez werent much better either (so basically all of the team). williams is no improvement on coates and he is much older and still wont displace skrtel or agger.

    ReplyDelete
  66. believe me i want to believe i would have had more time for them if they did not come out with statements like the one you have mentioned

    ReplyDelete
  67. While Wisdom has looked poor on very few occasions, Coates has done so continually. Wisdom came into the first team and performed (at an acceptable level, not like a world beater) straight away.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Liverpool have fallen so far since the days of Benitez that it woulnt surprise me if that when Rafa goes in twelve months time - he will replace Rodgers and the climb up the division will slowly start with some spanish flair

    ReplyDelete
  69. This alleged 4-2-4 was basically a 4-4-2 using wingers at the wide midfield positions. Offensive line-up. In hindsight it is clear that the back four needed more protection (Lucas instead of Allen for instance).

    ReplyDelete
  70. I wouldn't count on Kelly as he's injured quite a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Agree about Coates, and about Robinson swearing at Suarez (or any other player), but Robinson is 19 and may yet become a solid squad player. Wisdom hasn't had his best of games yesterday, but he looks as if he is a lot further in his development than Robinson (and Coates of course).

    ReplyDelete
  72. The Being: Liverpool documentary wasn't Rodger's idea. They've had that in place before he had even signed for us.

As for talking too much, well, what do you expect? The journalist to not ask any questions.

    ReplyDelete
  73. He's so good that he hardly got a game on loan in the Championship and the only team who had shown an interest right now is only allowed to sign/loan players who are 21 and younger and command less wages than the player the club let go. Wilson didn't seem to be better than Coates at all when he's played for us.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Trying to stop Suarez in training should qualify Coates to stop a third tier striker.

    ReplyDelete
  75. On Being Liverpool, I blame the organization for that decision.  But Rodgers is the one with the "Silver Shovel" comment.

The journalist is going to ask the question.  That's his/her job.
The manager doesn't have to answer it or be very forthcoming.

Don't air out the team's issues in public.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Lol, good old jockey, legend, he looked fitter than some of those oldham players, lol

    ReplyDelete
  77. shawcross or huth from stoke..................real men are needed, were a bunch of lightweight pussys at the moment.

    ReplyDelete
  78. To be honest, I've only watched the first two episodes. Silver shovel? That maybe was in a later edition.

Nevertheless I agree with you that he could always chose not to answer questions. The same goes for our players. Don't we all want them to do their talking on the pitch? But then the club also want's to sell subscriptions for it's in-house TV and needs to generate some content.

    ReplyDelete
  79. It's cringeworthy.

I think for the most part we are in agreement.  If members of the team or managers speak, we want them to do it in a certain way.

    ReplyDelete
  80. got to agree with you the lose is on Rodgers. He picked a team that had no width. He picked a backline that had zero composure and ability on the ball. He should have had Agger or Carrager instead of Coates. The worst thing though was not having gerrards presence in the midfield. Why have the same eleven(or close to it, formation wise and team selection as well) and kill off the game early. They did not win because of wonder goals, we lost because we allowed them to play their game.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Robinson looks solid all right. In the head. What a moron - shouting at a player whose jockstrap he isn't fit to wash. Pity Suarez didn't boot him. Might have woken him up.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Williams is not a good player - not LFC standard.  And besides I am fed up with BR signing players he knows, the last one he signed from Swansea for a whopping 15M has not turned out well so far.  What has happened to our scouting network - I'll tell you - it's called youtube and we don't have one.

BR has divided the fans now, especially after Sunday.  Some think he needs time, others think he needs to go at the end of the season and for someone with a PROVEN track record to come in.

At best, we are trusting a guy who is so hell bent on his 'philosophy' that he persisted with trying to implement it even though he said he didn't have the players to play it.  But he persisted even then.  We are also trusting a guy who is learning his trade that has no track record to speak of.  He talks a lot, but when it comes to it on the pitch, we collapse under pressure, are vulnerable to counter attacks and cannot even beat Oldham - truly he seems to be dragging us backwards.  So how long do we wait.

If people are happy to wait for the manager to turn us into a direct copy of Swansea last season (a mid table side who can pass the ball, but with a soft centre), then so be it.  Our club deserves a manager who has a track record, who we can trust to bring us trophies.  With Brendan we will become a second rate arsenal - pretty passes, sometimes anyway, and no trophies.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Yep, but there's little we can do about it. And I don't think it has anything to do with Rodgers. Kenny wasn't any better, and don't get me started on Hodgson. Rafa, at times, talked sense, but at some point he started to act silly. And Houllier turned a corner every week in his later days with us.

    ReplyDelete
  84. get rid of coates asap, i will drive him to the airport myself. utter garbage.

    ReplyDelete
  85. i agree, a bad performance for a young player i can live with but the "F OFF" to suarez showed a bad attitude and a real lack of respect.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I dont like hearing people saying its BR's fault for picking the young kids.
When should he pick them? if not against Oldham then maybe Arsenal? Man City?.
We all loved seeing kids break into the Starting 11 but when they dont step up its the managers fault?

    ReplyDelete
  87. hope the owners are happy with brendan who is scouting a few players down the old bailey, but coates showed his class with that goal at QPR but he gets a start on a bad pitch while he is learning his trade like lucus was its a big culture shock but i think FSG acted in haste with kenny, henderson is looking better now and downing is too, and joe allen might start to pass forward next year

    ReplyDelete
  88.  Exactly...Robinson should know his position. He barely has any hair on
his b@lls and he is not even good enough to lace Suarez boots but he
dared tell him to F#ck off?!!

He should be kicked out of LFC asap. What a disgrace he is...Didnt his mom teach him any manners?? Anywhere you go in life, seniors/elders should always be respected. You can`t tell your dad, your teacher or your boss to f#ck off!! Thats unacceptable...

Also he should learn to play football properly first before even thinking about raising his voice against arguably the best player in the premier league...

Doesn't everything take time? He got rid of alot of dead wood, so many players have left we haven't replaced them, he needs a few windows to bring his sort of players in.... Rome wasnt built in a day.... If we finish 6/7 then il be happy it's a improvement. Also how can you blame Rodgers? He put out a team which needed a chance.... But they failed they won't be used again.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Your copy + paste technique seems to be working, the same answer to a different question. The problem being the in every instance you seem to be saving time but spouting bollocks!
It doesn't grow on trees, you can't just chuck 0's at it and see what sticks or we will have a situation as before multi-mills in the red and looking for news sugar daddies!

    ReplyDelete
  91. I have been a big supporter of BR but I was disgusted with his comments after the Oldham game. He blames the kids, easy targets. He picked the team with few seasoned pros. Was he the only one surprised that the kids were bullied? Another thing, have you ever heard Rogers say a bad word about the established stars? Stevie G, by his own admission, had a poor start to the season without one word of criticism from Rogers. If Coates is a coward he has a good teacher. I doubt Rogers will buy any big names as his insecurity around them will undermine his authority. I have come to the conclusion BR has some great football ideas but no balls.

    ReplyDelete
  92. 3 goals conceded i dont think oldham will score 3 goals in a game again this season

    ReplyDelete
  93. so if we finish 7th that a massive improvement on last season and he deserves another season not in my book

    ReplyDelete
  94. liverpool4life5659:56 am, January 29, 2013

So in your book, we should just keep sacking managers because we improve a little bit? Lets just do what Chelsea do and sack everyone going and then no managers would want to come.... No it doesn't work that way, Rodgers is going to be here for a longtime. fSG paid 7 million for him they are goner back him like I do.

  95. Wisdom is a rather solid right back... He has got pace... But his overlapping plays are useless as he is an aweful crosser... N his positional sense is doubtful... Quite a few times this season, his lack of positional sense led to danger down the right side of the defence...
As for Robinson, he has potential, but he didnt seize his chance till now... Now that we are out of FA Cup too, these fringe players wont be playing anytime soon...
And it serves them right... When u get a rare chance to play, u got to put ur life on the line...
