Vertonghen raves: £20m LFC target is 'one of the best' talents I've ever played with...

Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen has heaped praise on Denmark playmaker Christian Eriksen, claiming that the youngster would have no problem making an impact in the Premier League.

In an interview over the weekend, Vertonghen - who played alongside Eriksen at Ajax - enthused:

"Technically he's one of the best players I've played with.

"He's right-footed and left-footed and he's always fit.

"Since he was 17 or 18 years old he's played every game for Ajax, and when he gains a bit more physical strength then he can play in any team."

Liverpool defender Daniel Agger is also a big fan of Eriksen, and in May, he told Ekstra Bladet:

"Eriksen has the potential to become world-class. There are no boundaries to what he can achieve. He really is a weapon for us [Denmark]. He adds creativity, and always wants the ball. He's also capable of taking set pieces with both feet. The way he kicks the ball is truly unique".

Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport last week, the Ajax midfield maestro hinted that this season could he his last in Holland, and suggested that winning the Europa League final'in our own stadium' would be a suitable swan-song. He mused:

"I think that my future lies in England. I will leave Ajax at one point, but I want to leave at the right moment and in the right way."

Eriksen also mentioned he wouldn't mind playing in Germany, Italy or Spain, but England came first in his list of preferred destinations. The Dane - who admitted last month that he finds it 'very cool' to be linked with 'big clubs' like Liverpool and Manchester United - also confirmed that there are lots of clubs trying to sign him:

"I know that there are many important clubs interested in me. It's a nice surprise [to be linked to different clubs]. I never said I would only play in La Liga. I like England and Italy too."

Ajax coach Ronald De Boer would obviously love Eriksen to stay but he seems resigned to the fact that the midfield maestro old will leave soon. He told reporters:

"It is difficult to keep him [Eriksen]. I think he is a player for Madrid or Barcelona but I think one more year at Ajax wouldn't hurt him. I can't predict next year he will be at us. If a team comes along and puts a big bag of money it would be impossible for Ajax to keep him"

  1. He is one of a few extremely talented players I would love us to sign. Unfortunately he will probably end up elsewhere.

  2. He would be great for us, but when he does leave I think it will be to one of a few select clubs who win there leagues. He could get into almost any squad, so I can`t see him wanting to come to us, even if it was for game time, as he gets that right now.

  3. He is definitely a 'potential' ...and costly one at that....so NO...BIG EFFING NO.

  4. not going to happen unless we drastically improve,so like i said not going to happen

  6. Ultimately he will got to a club like Newcastle or Arsenal at best. I tell you why! Barca and Real simply don't need him. Sahin all over again. Chelsea and Man shitty are big spenders for rather proven players at top league hence no, this lad ain't quite there yet. Unless Man city goes for another player like they went for rodwell and sinclair (squad players) I really dont see him in these rich clubs. Now Man Utd is a tricky one but I reckon SAF won't spend 15-20mn for this 'potential'....Arsene would sign him in pressure from fans for 'big signings' or he might go to Everton/Newcastle as their marquee signings like Fellaini/Cabaye....!! mark my words. Atletico/Valencia/any Seria A clubs(all of which are mediocre nowadays)...dark horses. In a nutshell, he wont go to a big club. Liverpool would have to be really dumb to waste money again.

  7. Darn!! I missed out on Spurs. Again, not one of the best clubs in Europe so possible.

  8. we cant be spending 20mill on potential...not with our track record...perhaps we could swap borini for him

  9. liverpool are dumb when it comes to transfer policies..its been one of the areas they have been consistent with time and again over two decades

  10. yep he should sign for spurs .he will save a fortune in not having to buy brasso cos true spurs players dont ave any medals to clean.

    ReplyDelete
  11. hes different class to borini ,would be a major coup to sign him but as it stands at anfield feel he will have better options

  12. jason car on me head son spurs till i die

  13. okay then Jase...borini,Allen and kelly ( why hes turning his nose at 35g ) and throw in cole and downing for good measure

  14. Very interesting view indeed. As Atlético and Valencia are both (?) skint and we are still bigger than Everton and Newcastle, our chances might not be as bad as I've thought.

  15. Unfortunately you are right.

  16. Why not swap Downing for him. Dutch league is a bit slower which might suit our 20m man.

  17. He is probably turning his nose up at 35g a week as he knows his future probably lies elsewhere, would you want to commit to a club that's vanishing without trace and managed by someone who is looking more out of his depth every week and seemingly cannot see when a player/players are playing terrible? no I doubt it.

  18. Sign for liverpool?
A club whos realistic acheivement will be fighting for a top 10 finish, year in year out
    Yeah right!... :)

  19. You really believe Ajax would look at downing??

  20. Liverpool have to make a stand ..chances are kelly looks at hendo on 70g and thinks if hes worth it i am....well hes not worth 70g 20-30 grand tops is what hendo should be on .. and i think 35g is generous for a guy who spends a lot of time on the physio table...these clowns need to show some steel when negotiating and realize we are lfc and unless your going one of the top teams in Europe its a step down in tradition support and history so if you want to play somewhere else adios

  21. Id like to seed downing play CM in ALLENS ROLE AGAINST fulham...my team is he persists with 4 3 3

    wisdom skirtel agger johnso
    hendo downing lucas

    assadi suarez enrique

if hes gonna showcase downing to sell put him in a position he wants to play

  23. 1st thing in the morning ring your doctor!!!

  24. Great player but we wont get him, sadly as things stand the only thing we could entice great players to anfield with would be a shed load of cash which we dont have

    ReplyDelete
  25. id like downing and hendo to play ...to kind of prove a point that Gerrard and Allen are way off the pace....sterling needs a break so why not assadi...and Enrique has played his best games in that position.....hendo and downing have been two of our best players of late so why not...or are you that blinded by prejudiced you think Gerrard and Allen are playing well....Allen has played 3 good games in 20 and Gerrard hasn't had a good game all season bar 20mins against utd...you just cant see the wood for the trees

    ReplyDelete
  26. Of course not, but it's pretty close to Christmas, the time to wish for things that won't happen, like world-peace or swapping Downing for Eriksen.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Mmmm not too many current Liverpool players do either! Where are you in the league and just what have our recent results been. Case closed MrCat.

    ReplyDelete
  28. well made point, maybe we could get him, although for some reason I dont think we will even go for him, which is a shocking thing

    ReplyDelete
  29. Liverpool bigger than everton n newcastle ? Yes we were!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Seriously a frontline of suarez ,Ba and Burak will def. Be top 4. Our marquee signing again ...is an average player cheeses doesn't play even when they have no strikers ....pathetic!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Agree with you, but Downing isn't and never will be a CM. Play him on the wing, Assaidi on the other wing, Hendo, Lucas and someone else in the middle.

    ReplyDelete
  32. that would be nice, kellys a odd one cannot understand why hes not getting game time

    ReplyDelete
  33. Totally agreed on that Chirag - I'd rather see us bring through our own talented young attacking midfielder (Suso) for once, rather than spending big on somebody else's player again.

I don't think that Eriksen is much more talented than Suso, if at all, he is just far more experienced

  34. as a dane who has seen him play alot, i dont think he will ever get to the top. they have atleast 2 bigger danish talents in ajax. he tends to fall out of the big games, and he plain sucks on our national team. He just isnt good enough.

  35. Mmmmm since 2000 2fa cups 3 lge cup cl and uefa ocup 7 trophies case very much open .your record ??? oh go on give us all a laugh!!!!

  36. The reality is we are not the power house we used to be, and looking at things we are going to fall even further behind, we are years away from realistically challenging for major trophies, oh and history means nothing these days unless your still competing, look at A.C Milan's history and then look how easily there big stars leave and how hard they can find it to replace them.. The fact is players are motivated by money and success not history, them days are gone mate

  37. This season LFC weakness can see at midfield area. Many players like Downing,Joe Cole,Henderson,Joe Allen,Sahin,Sterling,Suso and Shelvey cannot adapt and dominant their own area very well.Sterling,Suso and Shelvey very good attacking but lacking at defensive.Sahin and joe allen is good at defensive playing but cannot firing while attacking.Downing,Joe Cole and Henderson cannot displaying the character high quality players. But they all cannot prove that goal scorer still sinking at under the sea. LFC team not very good at corner free kick and counter attack system. Edison Cavani,Leandro Damiao,Christian Erikson and Tello will be great addtion to get sign in.But Sebastian Coates,Oussama Assaidi and Dani Pacheco still becomes the best because never been used very well and oftenly. What a waste talent......
