Bid? €20m LFC target dubbed the new 'Xabi Alonso' responds to transfer rumours...

Real Betis` majority shareholder Bosch Valero recently confirmed that prized playmaker Beñat Extebarria - allegedly one of Brendan Rodgers's 'favourite' players - could be sold in the transfer window. Liverpool have been linked with a move for Beñat several times over the last few weeks, but when asked last night if a move is on the cards, the 25-year old didn't give much away.

Speaking to Reporters, Beñat - who has four goals and six assists in seventeen games this season - was asked about speculation linking him with a move abroad. He said:

"Will I leave in January? All I know is that there is going to be talk of offers in the winter window just as there was last summer.

"My agents are in charge of everything and I am going to turn off my mobile phone until January 31st."

He could've said 'No, I am staying at Betis', but he didn't, which suggests that a move could be on the cards if the right offer comes in. A couple of weeks ago, Benta gave a similarly non-committal response:

"At the moment I'm only thinking about Betis and the next game. My agents take care of that [transfer talk] and they know what is best for me. I speak to them regularly, but I'm just doing my utmost for the team right now"

Valero confirmed last month that the Spanish star could be on his way out of the club. He said:

“We do not rule out the possibility that Beñat could leave this winter. Contract negotiations are ongoing, but there is no progress or agreement from both sides. Wolfsburg offered more than €10 million for him, but we decided that it was not a good time to sell him".

Beñat - dubbed the 'New Xabi Alonso' has a €20million release clause written into his current contract, but the fact that Valero considered selling the player to Wolfsburg for €10m suggests that he could actually be available for a lot less.

Real Betis’ are currently battling against administration, which could ultimately force the club to cash-in on their prized asset.

Beñat recently led Betis to a 1-0 victory over Real Madrid, scoring the only goal of the game.

  2. He looks good, but with Allen, Lucas, Gerrard, Shelvey, Sahin etc... I dont see where he would play?

  3. He looks like a good player, very Alonso like but would January be too early to sign him? We are pretty well stocked in central midfield at the moment. With a limited budget in January I would like to see all our attention on strikers, it seems that we have Sturridge signed up but I personally would like one more, maybe Remy. Sign this guy up in the summer after Sahin has gone back to Madrid...

  4. please no more central midfielders when there are other positions which need quality cover.

  5. Benat would indeed make an excellent Alonso replacement but where does that then leave Allen?

I agree we need more creativity in the final third though, so IMO a true number10 would make more sense.

In that regard, I would prefer to see a long term replacement for Gerrard in the form of Isco stationed behind our forwards.

That I think would would benefit our team more.

  6. If you watch Laliga then you can see that Benat is a champions league quality player and IMO its no brainer to sign him specially at such a low price. Evenif we already have so many midfielders but still i would like to see him at Liverpool because he would be an upgrade over lot of them, so i don't see why we shouldn't sign him.

  7. He does look a good player, but I have to admit I hate how the media label people "The New" when the player they are saying he is like is still playing, surely it should only count once the player has retired. I even heard of the NEW Walcott the other day.

In regards to should we sign him, I would say no, not right now. I think there are more pressing areas that are needed, and think a AM is the most important role that needs filling in regards to our 3 central mid players.

For now, Lucas is the DM, Allen can cover this role (not amazingly but can) Allen or Sahin work the DLP role, and Shelvey and Gerrard fill the AM role. It isnt amazing, but will do for know, if money is tight.

Get the striker now, then then Mid in summer

  9. 6 players for three positions is about right, you always want 2 players for each position ideally, my only worry is the mix we have, we have only one good DM, no real good replacements, then a few average mid center players, and no outstanding for the AM role. Sahin is on loan, and if he goes back, then that is one spot opened up.

  10. I agree, the guy looks good, but right now, on a limited budget, it isnt the first spot that needs filling. He would be a good addition, but only as a extra, if we get our first choice Striker, and first choice wide man.

  11. Just watching the video convinces me that he looks the part, a bit like Lucas on speed and if Brendan already likes the guy we need to try and get him, maybe do a part exchange with Henderson and Downing as makeweights.

  13. I believe that Liverpool could benefit from more Spanish influence. We all get excited over the likes of Suso, got excited over Xavi Alonso of course, over Luis Garcia back in the day. I think Spaniards are gifted with natural technical abilities which is why Spanish national team seems to win everything on the national level. Let's get Benat if he is willing to leave. He will do a better job as a string puller/mid field general than Joe Allen can in the same position. I believe that Benat will be able to properly enforce Rodgers strategy better than Allen. We have never really replaced Alonso
