Deserved? Rodgers now 4th-favourite to be the next PL manager sacked...

As a result of Liverpool's atrocious boxing day defeat to Stoke City, Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is now 4th favourite to be the next Premier League manager to receive his marching orders.

According to top bookmakers in the UK, Rodgers is 10-1 fourth favourite for the sack, behind Brian McDermott, Roberto Mancini and Paul Lambert.

I still have faith in Rodgers' long-term vision, but as the manager himself has admitted, football is a results business, and things are looking pretty bleak at the moment:

* Only 6 league wins all season.
* Failed to win 68% of league games under Rodgers.
* 25 points from 19 games, averaging only 1.3 points per game.
* LFC also had 25 points from 19 games under Hodgson, and he got sacked.
* 9 Points worse off than at the same point last season.

For me, the most damning indictment of the season so far is this: West Brom, Stoke and Swansea all have squads that cost significantly less than LFC (!), yet all three are above the club in the table.

The more you think about it, the more frustrating it becomes. One example: Steve Clarke at West Brom - No prior management experience, and miniscule squad value/transfer budget compared to LFC, but after only five months in charge, his team are in Champions League contention, and deserve to be there.

On a man-for-man basis, do any of the three aforementioned teams have better players than Liverpool? No. Clearly, the difference is effective management, and no matter what way you spin it, Rodgers is failing at the moment.

The club is in transition, and Rodgers is having to deal with certain issues that existed before he arrived at Anfield. However, whether it's underwhelming transfer market performance, tactical inflexibility, Blind allegiance to senior players, or gross overpraise of players (due to probable inferiority complex) the manager is also the author of his own destruction at LFC.

Unlike some fans, I never advocate sacking the manager mid-season. I didn't support that under Hodgson or Dalglish, and I'm not going to change now. However, if the Reds fail to win the next two games against QPR and Sunderland, it wouldn't surprise me at all to see Rodgers axed by FSG in the new year. John Henry et al have a history of being ruthless with managers when it's warranted. In recent years:

* Sacked Roy Hodgson after only 6 months in charge.
* Sacked Kenny Dalglish after 18 months despite excellent cup runs.
* Sacked Red Sox boss Bobby Valentine in Oct 2012 after less than a year.

If FSG had the balls to mercilessly sack Dalglish - a club legend widely considered to be LFC's greatest ever player, and worshipped and revered by millions of fans across the globe - they won't think twice about dumping Rodgers, a man with absolutely no prior connection to Liverpool FC.

Unlike Hodgson and Dalglish, Rodgers actually has a plan to take Liverpool back to the top, and although the plan is not working right now, there are enough positives to suggest that keeping faith with the manager will yield long-term dividends.

I really hope Rodgers doesn't get sacked, but setting aside my personal feelings on the issue, and being clinically objective, I would understand FSG's mindset if they decided to take that action.

  1. Alright no need for your sarcasm but when Gerrard was injured and Kenny came in after RH Lucas and Spearing really stepped up. Sahin already got his chance and apart from 1 good performance he hasn't done much else.

  2. What is the problem with starting from the bottom and building the club up again? Yes we are struggling and will take a few years to get us back on track again but rather now than later. FSG have appointed Rodgers for the long term, not for one season.

Some fans cannot comprehend that because they want instant success which is not going to happen at LFC. If we had a Russian billionaire buying success then it would be a different scenario but with Financial Fair Play coming up Abramovich will not be able to spend money like he used to as Chelsea (the club) will only be able to spend what Chelsea as a club makes annually. His own money is going to be worthless in the next couple of years as Chelsea as a club cannot afford the spending spree which Abramovich goes on with his own money.

That is why FSG have started now by getting in a young manager who at the age of 39 has many years ahead of him. We also have one of the youngest squads in the league so that is a clear indication that we are building for the future. Again, a project like this is going to take time so patience is a virtue.

We have not had CL football since 09/10 and we all know that CL football brings in much needed cash for new players, top talent, better wages etc. That is why it was vital for FSG to redesign the wage bill as we had a squad earning CL wages without us playing CL football. FSG has a plan to make the club self sustainable which is the only way to go with Financial fair Play around the corner.

The likes of Van Gaal, Mourinho, Manchini etc all have outstanding CV's but if one off these had to come to LFC they would want a unlimited wage budget which under Financial Fair Play is not going to happen. That is why they went for a younger manager like Rodgers, not to spite the fans but to prepare for many years to come.

The days where clubs like City, Chelsea etc buy success will soon be over. The playing fields for big teams will soon be level and a team like Arsenal have already gone through the 'Financial Fair Play' process. We are going through it now so once FFP kicks in we will be ahead of teams like City and Chelsea who won't be able to buy success any longer. What is going to happen when Sheikh Mansour can no longer bankroll his toy? Surely he is going to get bored. City cannot sell their stadium rights again to cover up their overspending can they? If the Sheik cannot have fun spending his limitless amounts of cash then why would he want to stick around as City the club cannot afford to sustain the wage bill that they currently have.

Unfortunately for some fans they will have to enjoy the ride as we are in for a bumpy ride and it might even get bumpier as we go along. As soon as we have reached our destination of smooth roads then we will be well on our way but that is not going to happen this season and probably won't happen next season either.

It is time to wipe the sleep from ones eyes and realise that we are a team that has fallen so far behind season after season and the only way back was getting rid of the dirty laundry and starting from scratch. Patience is a virtue.

  3. How long can you wait tho, and what are the guarantees it won't be wasted time. Blind optimism doesn't necessarily get you anywhere. Suarez won't stay and Gerrard's career will be over. We owe it to them to be challenging for the top, at least the top 4.

    ReplyDelete
  4. How long we want to wait and everything else that goes with it is not the issue. This is something that was bound to happen no matter how you want to spin it. Each and every club will have to live within their means meaning Abramovic and the Sheik will no longer be able to splash THEIR OWN cash in years to come. In years to come LFC will be miles ahead of City and Chelsea when FFP kicks in. How are City and Chelsea going to afford their current wage bill once City and Chelsea as a club have to spend what they earn. Remember, Financial Fair Play is end game for owners who want to bankroll their clubs. They will no longer be able to buy success with their own money. What clubs make annually will determine what they can spend on wages and new signings and that is the way FFP will work. Do you understand that?

It is not about blind optimism. It is reality and the sooner some understand the concept the sooner they will realise that LFC are heading in the right direction for the long term.

  9. I hear you and agree to an extent, but if it happens to all clubs it will eventually end up in a salary cut for all players, which is no bad thing. They will all need to take lower salaries, apart from the top 50 or so players in Europe. Eventually other clubs won't be able to over-pay for player transfers either. What you do need though is a top 11-15 players when FFP comes in. As it closes in all the top clubs will scramble to meet the new regulations and acquire all the decent players. Clubs nowhere near the Champs league will rarely get a look-in on these players. I appreciate our young players are doing really well, but they are still a long way off of being consistently world class. We have 3-4 players who are, and they won't hang around. After that, our stadium size will be a huge issue against Champs league competition. I've supported Liverpool for 30 years, and the best years in the last decade was under Rafa. I could trust in him ideas most the time knowing we would generally do well in important games, and we were improving. It was obvious in all the Chanps league quarter finals + games. I have little faith based on knowledge now but like a good fan I will be optimistic. Although I do thing it's more likely we'll finish out of the top 4 for the next 3 years.

  12. they are clear cut chances and half chances then they are the chances we create witch normally mean not even a half chance how many tap ins do we create

  13. Let's take it one step further.

City and Chelsea at the moment have the biggest wage bills in the league. FFP will be here in 2015. By that time if Uefa do a review of City and Chelsea's financial status and it is found that both clubs are not able to afford their lavish spending on players and wages then they will face being banned from Europe, fines and other T&C's.

How are City and Chelsea going to add top players to their squads who want ridiculous wages when their wage bill is already out of control. They will want to improve their squad every season but will have to get rid of their high earners sooner or later in order for the club to break even. City and Chelsea will take chances over the next two seasons and cover up their financials where they can. When we hit 2015 City and Chelsea will no longer have anywhere to hide. How are they going to sign the best players when City and Chelsea as CLUBS can't even afford to pay their current wage bills without cash from their owners? They are already stuck with unaffordable squads so both these clubs are heading for a dead end.

LFC on the other hand will by that time have an established squad under Rodgers and will be able to afford wages and transfer fees with respect to FFP. Playing fields will be level. How are City and Chelsea as clubs going to spend more than what we do in years to come when both these clubs cannot afford their spending at this moment of time without the Sheik's and Abramovich's money?

Does that paint a better picture for you?

  14. you really do talk crap financial fair play your having a laught, man city stadium naming rights has already paved the way to crush that chestnut, whats stopping any club charging 100 million for a executive box and and the owner buying it himself ,our owners use this line so they don,t have to spend there money and you swallow it ,and before you say i,am talking rubbish (just think about our bankers and the mess they have caused)another point, wern,t real madrid bankrupt a few years ago untill somebody bought some land of them for 2to3 hundred million gave them it back and built a training complex on it as well, fairplay my a$$

    ReplyDelete
  15. FFP man citys stadium naming rights end of that argument

    ReplyDelete
  16. I am very dissappointed with our performances recently. still i think that this was allways going to be a transition season, never had hopes for 6th or better. Brendan should be given this season and summer, and next season if we still play like sh**. then there is no excuse.

We wont finish higher than midtable in next 10 years if we start pulling chelsea and giving manager the boot every six months.

but Brendan needs to start showing some balls. Starting with benching Stevie.

No matter how much Opta you are gonna throw at me. he has been underperforming whole season. Or the worse option, he is declining as footballer, rather fast.

    ReplyDelete
  17. What is the end of the argument?

    ReplyDelete
  18. The financial fairplay isnt going to be introduced as it is, thats my bet. What will happen to Champions League if Giants dont play there. who will watch it? there will be ways to crcle around the rules, the naming rights being only the first trick.

i dont count on Liverpool getting to champions league by Chelsea and City being banned due to financial rule.

Only way is to reach 4th or higher.

    ReplyDelete
  19. that the fairplay rule will count to ****. thats my oppinnion. Platini will shoot himself in leg with that one i bet. im not buying it at all, and wont untill they start banning clubs from the competition

    ReplyDelete
  20. Agree 100% - We should be able to change and adapt our style during games.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Malaga have already been banned from Europe should they qualify for it next season. Unless they can provide proof by March 2013 that they are up to date with Debts then they are screwed.

FFP is going ahead. 93 clubs out of 53 countries have agreed to it. There is no turning back now.

  22. I think "coach" is the defining description of BR. His plan seems to be to coach "his" system, but as a manager he doesn't seem to have the flexibility/know-how/experience (whichever, take your pick) to recognise that we need to adapt to the opponents from time to time.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hopefully they won't get away with- it is too obvious...

    ReplyDelete
  24. "At the Global Sports Forum in Barcelona in early March 2012 it was revealed that UEFA had banned its senior executives from talking about the Manchester City situation, for fear of prejudicing any future legal action against the club. When asked to comment on the Manchester City losses of £197million over 2010-11, Philippe Rasmussen, UEFA FFP manager stated; I am not authorised to talk about this. I am not allowed to talk about it.

In March 2012, the Council of Europe produced a report which described the deal as an "improper transaction", recommending that; "UEFA should prohibit clubs from sponsoring themselves or using associated bodies to do so…UEFA will have to take care to ensure their financial fair play rules are not circumvented, and that clubs should not overpay for the rights they acquire. Clubs will no doubt try to supplement their income if possible. They could for example call on sponsors to invest more so as to reduce or eliminate their deficits…care will have to be taken to prevent any circumvention of the financial fair play rules in this way"

End game. city made a loss of 197 million in 10/11. That gets deducted from whatever 'money' they have gained from their family through sponsorship. If UEFA eventually run over City's financials and see another 197 million loss for 11/12 then their 400 million investment from an associated body means absolutely bugger all.

  25. I follow the logic behind this but I don't think he will be sacked. Not mid-season anyway. First of all you can't compare what managers do at Swansea, Stoke and WBA with us because what is considered overachieving at those clubs would be nothing less than expected at ours. We all know that WBA won't keep hold of a top four spot either. They're already starting to drop points and they will do so even more when the season comes to a close. Having said that, if you had told them at the start of the season that they would finish eight they would have taken it. If you would have said the same thing at LFC you would have been hung, drawn and quartered. A big difference with Roy is that BR seems to have the players behind him and the same cannot be said with Woy. The poor guy also had to deal with Judas Torres and BR does not have disruptive players like that in his dressing room. What worries me much much more is that for the first time since BR taking over, I'm getting the feeling that next year won't be much better. He is right to stick with his style of play and gameplan but he can't seem to get it across to the players. Drawing a lineup and a system on a chalk board is one thing, getting the players to play it is another. On top of that his insistance to shop for players he's worked with before is unsettling as well for me. Borini was a questionable purchase and has yet to set the world alight and now it looks like he wants to add Sturridge and DiSanto to that. Players who have not been able to force their way into a top four team, so how will they improve us? At Swansea he played the same game with similar players but at Swansea finishing eight was a tremendous feat. No one cared there if they lost to Stoke or West Brom because it was expected. So even if he only got his team to play the way it should once every two matches, he would always be a winner there. I'm not sure BR can attract the right players to the club to bring us forward and to be honest I'm not sure if he even knows who they are. I have always said and I will stand by that, that you don't need to spend 30 million on a player to get a good one. God forbid we've spent large amounts on players under Dalglish and the cheapest ones are the only ones that actually worked out (a bit). But I do believe that you have to be willing to go around Europe unearthing the right players. Hyypia was new to us but he was already established in Holland. Same goes for Agger in Denmark. Or Suarez, I'm sure quite a few LFC fans had never heard of him before the world cup in South Africa. The right players are out there but you won't find them at the Chelski Academy. The problem is, who to replace him with? I know a lot of people will say Benitez is the obvious answer but I'm not convinced. He's doing ok now at Chelski but I'm sure DiMatteo would have turned things around as well and that Chelski were just going through a rough patch when he was sacked. People seem to forget, or mostly prefer to stick their heads in the sand, his many failures in the transfer market and his alienating of players like Alonso, Riera and Babel. The spat between Arbeloa and Carragher at the end of the 2008/2009 season was the writing on the wall for the end of his reign because such things don't happen in teams with a good team spirit. If we sack Rodgers, whenever, we will once again be left looking for someone with potential to take over from him because we simply cannot attract the likes of Mourinho and Guardiola. So even though there are plenty of reasons to conclude it hasn't worked out for BR so far, there are just as many to suggest that the owners will bide their time this time around for at least another season and a half.

  29. Liverpool for Life10:34 am, December 28, 2012

The Liverpool owners vision is great . Their intention is that Liverpool play classy attacking football . Total Football . Unfortunately the manger they hired is not the one to do it . Liverpool need a class manager for that . You also need a manger who can spot and buy the talent needed for that kind of Football . Buying established players who can meet that total football philosophy is just too expensive and out of Liverpools financial capabalities.

Under Rodgers Liverpool have looked totally unimpressive . His transfer dealing are crap . His ability to get the best price for a player he does not want is disastrous . By telegraphing to all the world that Carrol does not fit his philosophy and can leave , he is immediately reducing the price Liverpool can get for Carroll. Clubs will know that Liverpool are desperate to get rid of the player and offer peanuts . Carroll cost $35m . Brendon R has a responsibility to Liverpool to talk the player up and get the best price not the other way around.

FSG , your intentions are great but Brendan just aint the guy to do it . Someone like Arsene Wenger can your guy

  46. Yes, a little. But Chelsea, ManU and Arse already have good young players too. Players may have to leave ManC, Chelsea etc but other clubs will still not be able to pay them much higher wages due to the same FFP regulations. Players will realise this and will still want to play, so will take lower salaries to stay at top clubs. Liverpool will be mid-table and any player (non Liverpool-born) would rather play for a Champs league and League challenging team. If our players don't prove to be the best young players, we are screwed. I don't necessarily think our youth players are better than the top teams in the Prem...be worth comparing the youths in each team to see but as we know no one is proven until they have achieved a few years of consistent success.

  47. Who's fault is it that our defence is all over the place all of a sudden?(this season). That aspect of the team was not really a problem last season, and if suarez had not been banned for 9 games(thats when our season turned) we would have finished higher in the league as well as win a cup and get to the final of another.Rodgers is a very good wordsmith. All the facts and statistics show we are going backwards.I am a Liverpool fc supporter, not a Brendan Rodgers supporter,Sorry but I think Rodgers has been found out.

  48. Our defence and midfield are worse than last season,we have no plan B,we create less chances(fact),He banged on about tika tika in yet we put more crosses in the box than ever(even though he sold the target man),Our passing is worse this year than last.our league position is worse,Anfield is now a free for all for any poor team to come and win,the ground is silent(as the football we play is so boring). But some fans will pick out the ONE statistic that looks ok and ignore ALL the others.Did Brendan Bring half the swansea fan base with him we he joined us.

    ReplyDelete
  52. After Suarez's ban, before that we were well on for fourth...and we still won a cup and got the final of another,I would love to see how this seasons lfc side coped without Suarez for 9 games,we would be in a worse position than we are now.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Maybe if you use your eyes and not just your ears you may be able to see that Rodgers talks a good game but thats about it.Don't see how sacking a manager who is clueless and is taking the club backwards could be any worse than keeping him?,That never applied before so what has Rodgers got or done that he merits special treatment?apart from what HE says he can and will do?

    ReplyDelete
  54. Very good well observed post. You have got the reason as to why BR was hired, spot on.I for the life of me cannot buy into the fact that "millionaire business men" would do anything on faith....it beggars belief really how fans are so easy to sweet talk and con nowdays.

  58. Why do you buy into his "philosophy"?(half the deludes who sprout it don't even understand the word,it would seem)...thats all it will ever be under Rodgers. No wonder the americans gave him the job...like all good yanks as long as it sounds good and you can sell it...apparantly thats enough, forget the actual substance.

  59. lol...thats just not true,Suarez was banned for 9 games, lucas out nearly all season,Gerrard out injured a lot of the season,Fergie and sky dragging Kenny out live on tv to make him apologise to fergie. And you say less distractions..,wow these Rodgers worshippers really are blind?.........or just deluded?....Can't decide which.

  62. this is what happens when you sack one of the best managers in the world who got us back where we belong, a few years back we had a manager who loved the club, who had proved what he could do, who was with out doubt the best lfc manager in 20 years and who would of probably gone on to be the best ever, this is all karma for sacking rafa and for the way some of our own fans turned on him and soiled his good name, i remember when he first left some lfc fans and the media talking about how rafa had ruined the club and the rubbish players he left behind, what a joke how can any lfc fan be so ungratfull and stupid, as far as im concerned there are 2 sorts of lfc supporters, the ones who love, respect and know what rafa did for us and would of continued doing for us, and the ones who brainwashed by a anti lfc media turned on him, how stupid is it that a large percentage of all football fans in england think rafa is a crap manager coz the press say so, only prob is his cv says other wise, so to fergie and the media ,well done you have managed to halt the threat of lfc under rafa ready to take other the world and knock us back to the dark ages, and to the scum lfc fans who turned on a legend and still dont respect the man and all he did, well done ,you have your wish only prob is he has gone and so has the good times, me i was more than happy with the work he was doing and knew what we had with him , the media and fergie wanted him gone as they could see what was happening and where he was leading us so they got worried and came up with a cheap smeer campaighn and put presure on him, isnt it funny how with hodgson and rodgers even with there terrible results that there is no media pressure on them,no ridicule, ask your self why, is it becouse they are more than happy with rodgers and hodgeson as with them at lfc there is no threat of us actually winning and becoming a force, fact is we got rid of rafa and now have rodgers even a child of 3 can tell that is not a good swap, one of the best in the world who has seen it all and the other a rockie with 12 months pl behind him,so to the so called lfc fans and media and anyone else who tries telling me we are better of now, and rafa was crap and rodgers is great ect ect, i just have one thing to say to that, its a quote from the outlaw jossie whales film and it goes a little something like this, " DONT PI-S DOWN MY BACK AND TELL ME ITS RAINING"
