Aldo: Suarez stamp was 'accidental'. Really? History suggests it was deliberate...

Luis Suarez put in another fine performance yesterday during Liverpool's deserved 3-0 victory against Wigan, but after the game, Latics manager Roberto Martinez claimed that the Uruguayan 'should've been sent off' for stamping on Wigan midfielder Dave Jones. Is he right?

After the game, Martinez said:

"He [Suarez] was very fortunate because there was a stamp on David Jones that the referee didn't see.

"That wasn't the sign of a top player.

"He was fortunate today. He was lucky. It could have been a red card if the referee had seen it".

In a radio interview last night, Liverpool legend John Aldridge dismissed suggestions that it was a deliberate stamp. He said:

"Match of the Day will show the stamp, but not Suarez comforting and picking up another player he's just accidentally fouled".

Suarez the Saint, 'Comforting and picking up' injured players...

Here is the incident. What do you think: deliberate stamp or 'accident'?

It would be great to give Suarez the benefit of the doubt here but it looks like a deliberate follow-through to me. He stamps on Jones' foot; in order to do that, Suarez has to lift his foot at the last moment, and then bring it down on Jones' foot after the ball has long gone. That doesn't happen automatically.

I've played football to a fairly decent level, and I'm sure others who've played will agree that this type of stamp is usually deliberate. The player usually intends to 'nick' the opposing player a little, but sometimes it goes wrong and you end up committing a major foul.

In other words, Suarez probably didn't intent to stamp on Jones; he probably tried to get away with a sneaky foul (stud rake down the leg), but mistimed it and ended up stamping on him.

Look closely at the image above: you can clearly see that Suarez rakes his studs down Jones' leg, but when he brings his foot down, he lands on Jones' foot. If Suarez had timed it properly, he would've missed Jones' foot, and the foul would've been impossible to see.

If this was a one-off then it would be easier to think it was a momentum-based accident, but Suarez has form for this kind of stamp. Against Everton a few weeks ago, he was involved in two stamping incidents.

Kevin Mirallas incident

This is a carbon copy of the Jones incident above, and Suarez was booked for this challenge:

Sylvain Distin incident

Deliberate or not, Suarez needs to be careful; one more yellow card and he receives an automatic suspension, and with Liverpool heavily reliant on his goals, that would be a major blow for the team.

NOTE: This is a legitimate discussion point. If you can't hack the critical approach to LFC then please go to some other site, where your views will be validated. Anyone who hurls abuse/complains about the nature of the post will be barred from posting on this article. If you disagree with anything in the article, argue against the points raised.

  3. I was wondering what negative you would be able to find from a 3-0 win. Well done sir! Are you currently writing an article about how well Henderson and Enrique played? Or Reina's encouraging comeback? If Suarez does this deliberately then he will (and should) get found out. But considering he spends 90 minutes chasing defenders around every week then I would say he is doing well to have ONLY caught 3 players. By the way, Robert Huth's was a DELIBERATE stamp.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Why the hell do you focus on the negative stuff all the time??

  9. What is *your* problem?! We should just ignore Suarez stamping on someone just because Liverpool won and he scored some goals?

Typical fan apathy. It may not bother you but it bothers me, and if you can't handle that, tough luck.

    ReplyDelete
  10. You serious?? You wont even post my comments because I say leave out the negativity??!!

    ReplyDelete
  11. Right, so you're quick to condemn Huth, but Suarez has to be innocent. You will attack opposing players till the cows come home for stamping, but when it comes to an LFC player who has done it THREE TIMES in a matter of weeks he must be innocent. Biased hypocrisy in its clearest form.

  12. A bit late but not a nasty one that was premeditated.

  13. How about you marginalising the players who tackle Suarez in this way, virtually EVERY game?

    ReplyDelete
  14. forwards tackle. let it go

  15. Show me evidence that players stamp on Suarez 'virtually every game'. Or are you just grossly exaggerating to avoid the issue?

  16. Why do you never show clips and videos of Suarez getting kicked weekly? Where is your video of Merallas and Fellani leaving their boot in that ame v Everton?? You are out for Suarez for some reason, he gets kicked at least 10 timess a game, if you actually went to the game, you would ee this, it winds me up the way TV fans just shout about what thy see on the telly.

To be fair to Suarez he does chase, harass defenders for 90 minutes, he has also been stamped on and fouled in the penalty box on numerous occasions but got nothing because of who he is, 9 game ban for an alleged word when terry gets 4, he has been slated in the press but he never hides from it, the anti liverpool media is ridiculous, if he had a united badge on he'd have about 5 more penalties and much friendlier press

  19. FAO: Billyparkes2009 - I am not interested in your moaning about how 'negative' you think this post is. If you disagree with it, construct a counter argument.

That goes for everyone else too: any post complaining that this article is negative will be deleted. If you don't like it, don't read it. If you disagree, debate the issue. If you want to bitch about me, go to RAWK/TIA/TheLiverpoolWay/RAOTL etc, where you will be welcomed with open arms.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yes, it's all a conspiracy against Suarez. He has done absolutely nothing wrong since arriving at Anfield, it's just the nasty press making stuff up. The guy is a Saint and should be canonised at the earliest opportunity.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Fair play that you edited my comment to only include the part about Suarez as that is the issue you have raised. But you have gone on the defensive too early, which is understandable considering the flak you cop. I'm not a hypocrite. I think I made it quite clear that I don't think that Suarez "has to be innocent" because if this is a deliberate play of his then he will get found out. They look much worse in slow-mo, even Huth's, but Suarez was on the ground then. Remember that there are 3 officials on the field who see these things, and not one of these resulted in a red card. The Mirallas one was the worst, and he should have seen yellow, as should have Huth, he was rightly given a yellow for what was pretty clearly an accident on Distin. I think the one from last night was an accident as well. Looking back on these maybe he should change his technique, but I do not believe he is a cheat.

  23. I think the way Suarez switches from attacking to chasing the ball so quickly may be the reason he ends up making these fouls. I don't think it was deliberate. So many times we see him dispossess players by getting tight to them quickly many of them could end up dangerous. It is something he needs to cut out of his game though before a player is seriously hurt.

    ReplyDelete
  24. It was a forwards tackle but that doesn't make it ok, when i saw it i expected a yellow at the most really i didn't think it was deliberate.

Anyway what about the tackle on Raheem by Figueroa no one is talking about that are there it was just as bad lunging in on his shin.

  25. I knew before I came onto the Newsnow website that there would be a Jamie Kanwaar article condemning Saurez actions!!!! You never fail to disappoint!!!!!! A masterclass forward display and the focus is on the negative, I do not for one minute suggest that we should ignore that reprehensible action, however not one note of praise? '100% behind Rodgers & FSG' disingenuous!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  26. MArtinez said it was bad and Aldo says it wasn't, you automatically take the side of the person against Suarez. That is how it seems anyway. It's been a few games since Suarez last dived or play acted, how about an article on that?

The reason you get so much flak and constant challenging of your views is because you make everything out to be so black and white. You will write article after article about why Suarez should leave or why he should nveer have signed becasue of his cheating but then write an article about why we should sign Adebayor. You set yourself up

    ReplyDelete
  27. Originally I thought the most recent example was the worst, because I just can't see how he was even attempting to play the ball. Quite often the ball is just touched away at the last minute and the ball that was there to be aimed for is no longer there and a foot is instead. But that didn't happen with this one. But he may have been trying to do what players sneakily do when they initiate the contact themselves by putting their foot between the ball and the opponent's foot that is about to play it.

Looking at the middle one again I notice the length of his strides. When he plants his right foot down he is already past the ball and he cannot get it.

His natural striding action should see his left foot come down in front of his body. But it doesn't. It comes down vertically.

It's like crossing a stream with stepping stones. If they're three foot apart that's a nice even stride. But if one is just 18 inches away you bring your foot down quicker to stand on it. That's what he did.

It couldn't have been anything but deliberate.

Suarez will never win with you Jamie no matter what he does! Why dont you post something different for a change, like how he is kicking ass, already reaching double figures with 10 goals to his name in the premier league, huh? Why are you siding with those muppets like moyes and martinez who are just jealous that they dont have a player like Suarez in their team? Do you hate him that much? What right do you have to judge him like that anyway? Are you a saint or something?

    ReplyDelete
  31. No, Arabee. I believe it was deliberate independently of what Martinez thinks. I actually have a mind of my own. I use Martinez's quote because he is the WIGAN MANAGER, and is directly involved.

I could've left out Aldo's quote, but it's called being balanced. One quote for and one against Suarez. My personal view has nothing to do with either of them.

I don't care about getting flak; people can attack my views as much as they want as long as they do so in a civil manner.

Your point about Adebayor is irrelevant, and once again, you completely misrepresent my view on the issue. I highlighted Dietmar Hamann urging LFC to sign Adebayor, NOT me; additionally, I provided two reasons why LFC should NOT sign him: wage demands, and African Nations Cup duty. Nowhere in my article did I state 'LFC should sign Adebayor'.

In any event, Suarez is in a completely different league to most other players when it comes to cheating, which is why I highlight it so much. You, on the other hand, are more than happy to condone and encourage cheating, and your many posts on the issue prove this.

  38. Yawn, here you go again Jaimie, no matter how many times you stamp ur feet and wish everyone else agreed with you the fact is all ur doing is speculating about the stamp/mis-timed tackle. Point is we can't read minds so to know whether he did or not mean it is impossible. This site was once upon a time a good read but ur personal crusade against Suarez is well beyond boring and appear to be nothing more than an attempt to increase traffic on this site by making controversial and divisive comments.
How about we get back to some new and refreshing commentary? I do of course realise that this is a business to urself but you should be reminded that flogging this particular dead horse issue will drive readers away. It's ur call Jaimie and threatening to ban people for making comment that disagrees with u is churlish and childish to say the least.

    ReplyDelete
  39. It's because he's that pathetic, and clearly has some sort of agenda against Suarez. I'm tempted to get in touch with newsnow and ask then not to display links to his articles.

And i personally believe that Jamie.k and john carr are manc scum.. forgive me for saying that cuz im not perfect..:)

    ReplyDelete
  42. Jamie, I think the reason why most fans get upset with you is because you seem to simply jump on the "anti Luis Suarez" circus bandwagon. The. Media have had the knives out for Suarez ever since he handballed in the Quarter final against Ghana for Uruguay. All this negativity detracts from his ability and positive traits!!
It seems to be only negative comments you make about Suarez... Or if you compliment him, you follow it up with a negative... Impartiality is all we ask for. His challenge was late yes, but not as malicious as you make out!!

    ReplyDelete
  43. To be fair to Martinez he was complementary to Suarez before the match and wasn't overly judgmental on him afterwards, just gave his view. I think he is one of the nicer managers in this league.

    ReplyDelete
  44. deliberately or not why make an issue? all players make fouls and lots worse than these. what about all the fouls committed on luis suarez himself? why dont you make an make an article on that instead?..am sure u will get many more videos of even worse tackles than those 3 above.. without doubt! in fact the figuero tackle yesterday was much worse than these 3.lol u funny guy

    ReplyDelete
  45. The truth about Suarez?? I think the only truth we fans know about him is that he appears to be a loving father and husband. I'm still not convinced either way if he is a cheat or misunderstood, but you are picking up on one thing that happens in half a second of a 90 minute game, that MIGHT be an accident, and declaring him a cheat. Was he cheating for the whole 90 minutes?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Hey Jaimie! Newsflash...I think I just saw Suarez killing a moskito that was s#cking blood off his neck today! I even saw him walk on a cockroach on his way to the grocery yesterday. It looked accidental but knowing him it was surely on purpose... How evil can he be!? What a criminal!! What can I do now? I guess I should call the police! Afterall these are offences of the highest order, dont you think? I think he deserves capital punishment...

    ReplyDelete
  47. I know how about doing something original? How about focusing on his goals for once instead of this agenda driven persistent analysis/criticism of Suarez. Lets not FORGET YOU WERE CALLING THE GUY A CHEAT BEFORE HE EVEN GOT INTO THE UK.

He is saving our season. Yet you continually focus on the anything negative.

I don't understand why a Liverpool supporter would do this?

Suarez is well on his way to 30 goals - lets be thankful for that instead of being a moaning carping mini eh?

    ReplyDelete
  48. The fact that you have to ask 'why make an issue out of it' shows that you are part of the 'Let's forgive LFC we like for anything they do!' brigade.

I'm not part of that movement. So sue me.

    ReplyDelete
  49. He didn't stamp on anyone. His tackle was late though and he should have received a card. Maybe even a red one. The thing with you and a lot of professional media outlets is that whenever Suarez does something it has to be deliberate and out of malice but when Gerrard or some other ingurland wonderyboy does anything it's merely unfortunate and clumsy. Suarez is a striker, many strikers make late and terrible tackles. That doesn't mean they should get away with it but it also doesn't mean that one should be nailed to the cross at every possible occasion and the others should be left alone.

    ReplyDelete

  51. Now you are misrepresenting me. We do not agree on what cheating is, I do not condone cheating. Also, because of Adebayor's constant cheating I thought you would have come out all guns blazing about why we should not be signing him like you did with Suarez. I know you don't care about flak, why should you? I just think your hardline zero tolerance policy regarding anything is your own worst enemy and can sometimes lead you to lookng like a hypocrite.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Still waiting on my comment Jaimie? Something to hide?

    ReplyDelete
  53. The thing is Jamie with Suarez he likes to get close to defenders and steal the ball off them andin doing that there is a chance of collisions an if Suarez stopped that if would lose a lot as a player

    ReplyDelete
  54. Fans can get upset with me all they like. I am a fan with an opinion just like them; the problem is, most fans demand/expect other fans to be just like them, and they don't tolerate any deviation from the group mentality. Well, I have my own mind, and if the mob don't like it, hard luck.

The media have their knives out for Suarez because he has a long history of negative behaviour, whether it's cheating, stamping, biting etc - the criticism is fair, and he brought it on himself.

I haven't jumped n any bandwagon. In fact, I was critical of Suarez long before the british press got on his case, and regular readers will confirm that.

And please don't talk to me about 'impartiality' :-)

You are not impartial; no fan is, including me, and I'm under no obligation to be impartial. If you want unbiased views, I suggest you visit the Press Association website.

When I was at law school, my lecturers knew about the law. This begs the question...how can you be a football pundit when you clearly know nothing about the game.

  78. Hi Jaimie,

Yawn..... The whole argument of this article is based on "maybe". "Maybe" because he's caught someone like this before it's deliberate. "Maybe" he only tried to get away with a sneaky foul. "Maybe" he's miraculously discovered the secret to cheat at a level way above everyone else (really? That sounds kind of silly to me). "Maybe" I'm qualified to pass judgement on this split second challenge as I've played football.

No hard evidence, just supposition: assumption - presumption - surmise - guess - conjecture.

Who knows, maybe it was intentional. It didn't look full of malice to me. I'll agree he's no saint and needs to be careful, but then a huge a majority of players who are paid to go and win games do not remain saints throughout a whole game.

You ask the question: "What do you think: Deliberate stamp or accident?" Then go on to answer the question yourself. Who are you asking, us or yourself?

Suarez definitely should not be above criticism when deserved, I just question the merit of it being deserved this time.

If Martinez had not commented on the challenge would you have still written a similar article highlighting the "stamp"? I think it's easy for Martinez to make the comment as the Suarez "bandwagon" seems acceptable for anyone to jump on (admittedly some of this is of Suarez's own making). It seems to me that Martinez could have suggested a retrospective public flogging and no-one would of batted an eye-lid due to the constant story that Suarez seems to be. Is this all of his own making (I presume, even I'm doing it now, you'll lean towards a yes) or is it largely due to media outlets of all types needing something controversial to write about?

Surely he can't always be Punch while every player he comes into contact with is Judy.

The benefit of the doubt in this case would seem to be more objective I think.

    Anyway, that's my two-pence worth!!

    ReplyDelete
  79. I don't think I ever insulted you but yet I can't post comments??!!

    ReplyDelete
  80. The last of the three tackles was the worst imo, but the first one? You see that kind of tackle often through the course of a weekend, often defenders on forwards, some are penalsed, some not

I've seen Scholes do much worse with commentators and pundits laughing, dismissing it with the usual 'Scholes can't tackle' comment. I've played football to a very high standard too, albeit some years ago, and I can tell you that imo there's no way the first tackle is a stamp. Mistimed, ill advised certainly, a yellow card for sure, but a stamp?

    No way.

You seem often to get off the hook when people post contrary positions to your own as they often stray into overexaggeration, or cheap insults, allowing you to reply chiefly to the hyperbole/insult rather than the point itself.

In this case I think you're letting your apparent dislike for Suarez as a player overall despite his many positive traits cloud your thinking

    ReplyDelete
  81. Absolutely :)

    ReplyDelete
  82. If you can't post comments, how can you post this comment?

Your last two comments were moaning about the alleged 'negativity' of the article. Such comments are pointless and just clog up the thread. If you disagree with the points raised, argue against them. Attack the argument, not the person.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Of course it's conjecture - most opinions about football are based on 'maybe' and supposition. You state there's 'no hard evidence', but the video evidence is persuasive.

I pose the question about whether it's deliberate or not and then give my own view. Well, imagine the cheek! Am I not allowed to have an opinion? Does me having a view preclude others from having their own view?

If Martinez had said nothing I still would've highlighted it, yes. I use Martinez/Ado quotes for context. They're related, are they not?

You can keep painting Suarez as a victim, but he is not. He has brought the negative media attention on himself with his constant negative antics over the last few years, and you know as well as I do that if he was a Man United players, all these LFC fans defending Suarez would be endlessly eviscerating him.

    Ultimately, it's very simple:

    * If an LFC player is a superb footballer, the fans will fall over themselves to defend anything negative he does. No matter what the evidence, negative incidents will be rationalised; it will always be someone else's fault, and the player concerned will be the victim of some kind of media bandwagon.

    * If the player os not very good, he'll be thrown to the wolves for any infraction (Itandje/Babel etc)

    * Opposing players will always be severaly castigated for the SAME infractions perpetrated by revered LFC players.

This is how it always is. The most recent example is the Huth incident. LFC fans couldn't wait to condemn him for the stamp, but Suarez does three suspicious stamps in a matter of weeks and LFC fans will not accept that any of them could've been deliberate.

Complete and utter hypocrisy. As usual.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Let the real issue be highlighted here. Luis Suarez is TOP CLASS. He is the TOP SCORER in the premier league. That can only be a positive thing. He gets kicked from pillar to post in every game, and still gets seen as the bad guy for 1 or 2 challenges himself every so often. And yet he still comes out as top scorer in the premier league. The guy is class. It's that simple. Someone should grow a pair and say so, instead of concentrating on the usual negativity that comes from Haters.

  85. Mike - someone can make an amazing counter-argument, but if they include insults in their comment too then it will be deleted. The comment policy is quite clear, and if people can't debate without regressing to typical hooligan mentality, then that's their problem.

As history proves, if you leave human beings to their own devices completely unchecked then they just kill, rape, main, steal and basically destroy the world.

Online, the principle is broadly the same: let people say whatever they want unchecked and you invariably get personal abuse and bullying.

If I didn't have to moderate that would be great, but that's not the way it works. I don't want people to have to wade through endless abusive comments just to follow the thread of a debate.

It's down to the individual. There are 150,000 comments on this site, the majority of which disagree with me, often vehemently. They stay live because those commentors debate in the right way.

Sometimes, people have to be forced to be polite and civil, and I make no apology for that.

  86. Sorry, Do you only post intelligent replies when you have had time to type up an immediate reply yourself???
NonEventHorizon's post was 15 minutes ago, but only showed up, when you had your reply already below it!
Talk about stacking the cards in your favour! lol

  87. Yes, it was probably deliberate but Suarez gives as much as he gets, but because of his 'colourful' history, everything he does wrong is magnified beyond belief. Personally I like this side of his game 'he is a fighter - and we need some fight in our squad'.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Fair enough.

sometimes though, you correct the manner, and forget to address the argument. I reckon many of us would be happy to see both ...

    ReplyDelete
  89. The last time was Torres, which is not so long ago.

    ReplyDelete
  90. I agree. Other LFC sites will make you feel warm and snuggly with their validating views, that will probably align with your own. If you want to stay in the comfort zone, head over to one of those sites.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Jaime, let's be fair here. There is a difference between a 'stamp' and 'stepping on'. Stamping is a far more aggressive term to use during a tackle. To me, a stamp is raising the foot and rapidly forcing it down onto the intended area. Correct me if am wrong!!?!?

    ReplyDelete
  92. It's a matter of principle: if you are in the pub and some guy gets in your face and starts slagging you off in a personal, do you just stand there are take it? Is that acceptable to you? I imagine not.

The same applies online. People think that just because they're anonymous, they can treat people like dirt and insult them in the vilest manner possible.

    Not on this site.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Yes, you're right. Whether Suarez actually stamped or 'stepped on' Jones is a matter for debate.

I think the video evidence shows he stamped on Jones; to me, saying he 'stepped on' him is rationalising euphemism, typical of fans trying to defend the indefensible.

I'm not saying my view is right; it's just an opinion, and I can see the argument that Suarez may just have 'stepped on' Jones.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Earlier on u quoted ur opinion as the "truth" therefore implying u were right. Getting farcical jk. change the Record man.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Why are people so incapable of comprehending things properly. I didn't say anything about my view being the truth; I said Moyes and Martinez told the truth. Please get your facts right. Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  96. You know what's funny - disabling right clicks on 'your' content to prevent theft, then hot linking images from the paddy power blog.

    ReplyDelete
  97. "Typical of fans trying to defend the indefensible"??? Jaime, I am merely pointing out that 'stepping on' is a lesser charge/accusation than 'stamping'. By the way, in this case, NONE of the 3 video clips were 'stamping'. 'Stamping' is a vicious act in regarding any sport. 'Stepping on', like Suarez did in all 3 cases is DEFINITELY worthy of a yellow card.

    ReplyDelete
  98. All 3 of the above 'tackles' were mis-timed or just a little late - a 'forwards tackle'.

The latest one IMO, Suarez is trying to get his right foot (and body) in between Jones and the ball, but the defender gets there ahead of him thus catching his foot.

Against Mirallas, Suarez tries to take the ball with his left foot but Mirallas is too quick and shifts the ball just before Suarez can get there and thus catching Mirallas as his foot comes down.

The Distan tackle IMO, Suarez is trying to anticipate what Distan may do. IMO Suarez thinks Distan might drag the ball back or go to his left and therefore stretches out his left foot to try and nick the ball (something he tries to do regularly), but gets it wrong and catches the heal of Distan.

All three could have seen Red cards shown but IMO there was never intent to hurt a player and none of them a 'stamp' - just eagerness to win the ball.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Accident. Try's to go for the ball the defender gets their first end off. We can see Suarez can't tackle.

    ReplyDelete
  100. OK. I wouldn't say the video evidence is persuasive, that only depends on if you want it to be or not. I'd say the video evidence is open to debate.

Asking the question half way through the article, then answering with a view (positive or negative) appears to then try to influence the readers final opinion on the answer. I'll admit that I may be reading too much into this point and being pedantic.

Fair enough if you would have written the article anyway, but to say you use both quotes for context and, in a reply to Arabee, to be balanced - why the sneer at Aldo's comment in the line just before you ask the question: Suarez the saint, "comforting and picking up injured players"... Just doesn't read as balanced to me.

I don't know if you are referring to me as "painting Suarez as the victim" or if that is a generalisation of the comments on most of the Suarez related articles you're writing at the moment. I personally said "who knows? maybe it was. Didn't look like it to me", "he should definately not be above criticism", in reference to the "bandwagon": "some of it is of his own making".

    Ultimately it's very simple:

Point 1, yeah you're probably 99% right, except that goes for any clubs players and fans, not just LFC. And not all fans can be included in that statement, yourself being the prime example and a fair few people who comment on your arguments supporting your opinion being some of the others. I'd include myself in that category too.

Point 2, poor players are thrown to the wolves for being poor, whether offensively or defensively and all that encompases. Charlie Adam couldn't get within 3 feet of a player when tracking back without bundling them over and no-one suggested he was a cheat or it was always malicious.

Point 3, and so they should, just as a revered LFC player should. In the case of this article I still say it's debateable as to the intent.

It is how it's always been and of course the majority of LFC fans were quick to condemn Huth's stamp. Are you suggesting that wasn't intentional? To my mind the label "suspicious stamps" suggests you think there is no suspicion at all and fair enough. I think there is debateable suspicion for this one and the Distin one, the Mirallas one looked clear cut and deserving of punishment.

Is the last line of your reply directed specifically at me!?! "Hypocrisy. As usual". If it is I think that's incorrect and you've missed the point and tone of my comment. I could consider being called a hypocrite a personal insult, not that I'm taking it that way, but wouldn't that break the comment policy ;)

Anyway, I think you may have missed the point of my comment: I'm not defending Suarez as a can-do-no-evil player, but he does always appear to be your Punch when I think sometimes he could be your Judy (for balance and all that).

    ReplyDelete
  101. Great points, thanks.

The last line about 'hypocrisy' is not aimed at you, but the fanbase in general.

You're right that video evidence is open to debate; people will see it in different ways based on their overall view of Suarez.

Re point 2: let's be honest here. If Suarez smirked during the H'boro memorial service, I sincerely doubt he would be demonised and basically kicked out of the club like Charles Itandje.

Itandje was deemed expendable and was not an integral part of the team, so to fans, it's okay to eviscerate him. Same goes for other non-favourites who make mistakes: the fans attack with venom, but if it's Gerrard, Suarez etc, the rules change.

For the record, I think the Huth stamp was definitely deliberate.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Actually JK u get your facts right " Anyone who tells the TRUTH about Suarez is a Muppet" in response to Deaththekid. you agreed with moyles and martinez assessments by saying they told the "TRUTH" hence ur opinion is clear for all to see. I am more than capable of comprehending properly my friend you just aren't making your point clearly enough. if ur agenda is to see the back of Suarez it must have been hell to hear him declare his loyalty to LFC this week. All i have to say on the matter is Suarez is a joy to behold fights like a demon for us and has bite to his game like Souness, Hamman and Nicol. Bravo Suarez. Try supporting the team JK.

    ReplyDelete
  103. God what a shite debate jk this is awful.

    ReplyDelete
  104. To me the evidence provided to illustrate that it wasnt "a one off" makes it more likely that the incidents are a result of his style of play. A deliberate stamp is more likely to be a one off and have a motive behind it i.e the stamp by Huth. Yes he needs to be careful as he is at a risk of being punished/causing injury but only those biased against Suarez will kid themselves that there was intent to harm.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Did you go and make a compilation of all the times Suarez has been stamped on and tackled without any cards given you twat?

    ReplyDelete
  106. Of all the articles written about this game and Suarez' role in it , Jaimie's is the only one focusing on the so-called stamp. Obsessed much?

    ReplyDelete
  107. The first two gifs are clearly Suarez looking to block the ball and getting the defender's ankle when he misses. It's a poor tackle, but there's no reason to believe he's aiming for their feet. The third one looks pretty bad in slow motion, but at regular speed it would take very good timing to do intentionally. It seems to me like calling Suarez a dirty player gets more people to comment than calling him a poor tackler. Well done.

    ReplyDelete
  108. There is no looking like at all. jamie likes to criticise readers comments all the time but deletes anyone who criticises him. He is a blatant hypocrite. Again, I know you gonna delete this but you still read it. hahaha!!

    ReplyDelete
  109. But you did. And you called him a fanatic!! tut tut tut!!

    ReplyDelete
  110. well said Sam!! lil jamie boy likes to write this sort of thing so he can get hits. go on Jamie delete this one too!!! I know you will.

    ReplyDelete
  111. your comment are usually derogatory or at least insulting. U called a guy a fanatic!! Thats rude!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  112. So it is not about being derogatory but because YOU think they are pointless. Thats censorship!!! post it and allow the intelligent readers to decide if they are or are not pointless.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Another insult on a reader! Saying he is part of some type of brigade!! Like the man is to foolish to make his own decisions!

    ReplyDelete
  114. Kanwer is not a Liverpool fan!! He bans most Liverpool fans from his site cos they tell him truths he is not prepared to hear!!!

    ReplyDelete
  115. First of all you're not press. Second of all stick to the point at hand and don't throw your toys out of the pram by saying things like "Suarez has done nothing wrong", that's not what is being discussed. If you want to have a go at Suarez every week and blow everything he does out of proportion than be my guest but don't get offended when people respond negatively.

It's simple, Suarez should have been booked for this foul just as he was against Everton. But that's all it was, a foul whereas you're jumping at every little thing to vilify the guy.

    ReplyDelete
  116. suarez gets more than his fair share of stick both by defenders and tv pundits but like a lot of posters on here say it would be nice if one day you ran just a purliy posotive post on suarez because it always seems that when you praise him they are negotive back drops to the posts imo i dont think the tackle was malicias no more than some of the wigan tackles or schoales lunge at the keeper yesterday but the media seem to always except that its schoals and its just his vigour for the game that makes him do these tackles but suarez is a cheat wonder if suarez played for man ure he would get all this constant stick me thinks not

    ReplyDelete
  117. Aldo is wrong here.

Suarez was booked for Distin challenge, not Miralles.

No doubt he has a bit of a nasty streak, most South Americans seem well able to look after themselves.

Miralles had it coming in my opinion, he had committed a few nasty ones and got some back. Justified in my opinion

Distin tackle was nasty, as was Jones above.

A planned booking in Spurs game might be a good idea.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Ah yes Torres, the posterchild for sportsmanship and loyalty...

    ReplyDelete
  119. Good article. Some grock of a defender is going to go through him two footed and put him out for the season if he keeps pulling this kind of stuff. The one on Kompany last season was the exactly the same as these, too. They're not accidents.

    ReplyDelete
  120. It looked nasty in slow-mo, but let's be clear here. It wasn't a 'stamp'. He mistimed a tackle and trod on his boot. And it happens in games up and down the country all the time. It is a non-story.

Martinez chose to highlight it because:
    1) His team got beat.
    2) He was 'allegedly' offered the LFC job.
    3) He's turning into a miserable tw@t. (Again, allegedly).

For some balance, Gary Caldwell got megged by Suarez, so tried to chase and kick him, mistimed his 'challenge' and injured himself. And had to go off.
Did Martinez or Match of The Day highlight this?
    Silly question.

    ReplyDelete
  121. here we go again with the ultra slow mo gifs .you can slow down most accidental fouls and make them look deliberate , these things happen in a fraction of a second try playing them at normal speed and your argument gets shown up for what it is .

    ReplyDelete
  122. 0ne booking only for the 3 incidents is right in
    my opinion.
In the Wigan match Suarez's eyes never leave the
ball, his heel is very firmly planted in the ground and
Jones's lower leg and the top of Suarez's foot arrive
in the same spot very quickly and at the same time.
    Accidental.

    ReplyDelete
  123. did you honestly believe that evra and the fa were telling the truth ? you obviously do as other than that he hasn't done much wrong since getting here !

    ReplyDelete
  124. I know that Jaimie, I just thought that at some point in the article you would have brought up his cheating

    ReplyDelete
  125. Seems he just timed it wrong and went over the top of the ball , done the exact same myself and it was accidental as well

    ReplyDelete
  126. You have highlighted a valid point of contention with regards to these three incidents. They really do appear to speak for themselves. Total respect to you Mr Kanwar for addressing the issue

    ReplyDelete
  127. Great great player but a bit of a nasty streak to him. It seems like every week something ugly comes up about him that makes me uncomfortable. It's happened too much over his career for it to be accidental all the time. It's similar to Paul Scholes in a way. I'm sorry if this upsets my fellow Reds but he's hated for a reason. I truly hope that over his Liverpool career that he can find that balance of energy and playing on the wire without it spilling over into unacceptable behaviours and incidents. Craig Bellamy took years to achieve it but hopefully Luis does it quicker.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Sorry Simon. That foul doesn't count, and adds nothing to the debate.

    Because it doesn't involve Suarez......

    ReplyDelete
  129. Unfortuntatly Louis is vilified for his past experiences and other managers are now jumping on the band wagon at every opportunity. I understand fergie started this and it's followed on from there.its a kind of bullying in my opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  130. I don't think it was intentional, I just think that he doesn't think and refuses to let anything go. Sometimes that means he pulls of tackles that he has no right to make, but more often he does stuff like this and that really needs to stop. This is far more of a problem- first of all, for Liverpool (if he picks up a 3 game ban, we could end up in a tailspin, quickly) but more importantly, if he keeps on like this, he's really going to do some damage to someone. Usually if a player did this as often as Suarez does, I'd think it was intentional, but having had the benefit of seeing him play, I think he is, for all his skill in turning people, a bit uncoordinated. He falls over and stuff (and I mean just goes on his arse, not tries to win a free-kick by diving) all the time. There is that, which he can't do too much about I suppose, but there is also the fact, which he can help, that he gets enormously fired up. You don't want him to lose his edge, but he needs to start learning lost causes and not running around like a lunatic.

That said, I think the Mirallas one is probably intentional.

I hope someone has a word with him about it, if not in the interest of sportsmanship (heaven forbid!) but at the very least at the behest of self preservation.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Also, in case anyone was wondering, I think that the Distin and Jones ones should both have been reds (but, in terms of consistency, I wouldn't have been happy to see them given retrospectively).

    ReplyDelete
  132. Maybe is the rest of the bloody team played football, SUarez wouldn't have to do all the work and take all the risks.

    ReplyDelete
  133. this is utter tripe. "history suggest otherwise...." does it - you pick out three incidents in the season, two of which may be debatable - the mirallas one is just you looking for something to help prove your point, but it just makes you look like a moron, which is not unusual - and have decided that one incident is deliberate and therefore the other one probably is too. probably probably probably, you would be perfect for an fa racism case with your bizarre logic, your constant discrimination against suarez undermines any plausible point you ever try to make, which is why its a predictable waste of time reading anything you have to say about Luis. Daily Mail-esque 'journalism', yawn.

    ReplyDelete
  134. Jamie, you are anti-Suarez agent? This action is among other actions in the game, you're just speculating. I'm not Suarez brain, he deserves a carton? yes, red or another? the referee decide, but I don't know if Suarez did it deliberately.

    ReplyDelete
  135. Jamie I am extremely infuriated and disappointed in u. Just caught the repeat of the game and watched event both in real time and in slow mo. It is NOT news worthy, not even worth a debate! For the 1st time I agree with your detractors u are DEFINITELY anti-suarez no matter what u claim.

Suarez perfomance in the game was so magnificent that, that small lil incident should have been the last thing u thought of writing about. I will tell u my OPINION since u are all about freedom of opinion, I think YOU HATE SUAREZ simple as that and its sad. The sooner u own up to this the better and this is what infuriates most fans I think. That u pretend to be impartial against Suarez when u are clearly not. Unecessary article imo!

    ReplyDelete
  136. They are all awful, snide, nasty challenges....how can you say they werent intentional.'Eagerness to win the ball"? you ve got to be joking, hes way off the ball in the third one and has no intention in yesterdays.Hes a horrible, horrible player and the sooner he fecks off the better

    ReplyDelete
  137. You can actually see the little bastard looking at Distans heel, before he deliberately scrapes his boot down it and then pretends its an accident....hes disgusting.

    ReplyDelete
  138. Getting ridiculous now, why does Suarez keep on doing these so-called acts of gamesmanship to put it mildly

    ReplyDelete
  139. I await the moderation of your post with baited breath.

    ReplyDelete
  140. Torres has never been an EPL top goalscorer- check ur facts right!

    ReplyDelete
  141. I don't play football at high level, but i play a simailr game to Suarez, hounding folk to get the ball, and on occasion i have stamped on a foot by mistake.

    Happens.

    ReplyDelete
  142. Suarez is PL top scorer *at this moment* - it's not the end of the season yet, is it? Similarly, there have been times during the season that Torres was the PL's top scorer too.

    Try and keep up.

    ReplyDelete
  143. This is the first time that I have seen these incidents involving Suarez, and my first reaction was christ how did he get away with them, now dont laugh I am a dyed in the wool Newcastle fan of some 50 odd years, and recently I have seen both Tiote and Collucini red carded for offences which were a kiss on the cheek compared with Suarez,s attempt at playing the ball. Come on you scousers he should have been red carded using video evidence for the foul on Distan. The pictures do not lie no matter how many ways you care to look at it.

    ReplyDelete
  144. Saints fan here. I have to say that, just from looking at the images, I think the first of them looks the worst offence (not that any of them look great) To me, his leg doesn't extend until he sees that Jones is going to get the ball. The other two could be taken just as bad timing although he could have taken a lot more care so as to not step on the guy's foot in the second one.

From an outside view, Suarez is a dirty, niggly player but he is also supremely talented and a joy to watch when he's on form. Most fans do seem to be blinkered at best and downright hypocritical at worst when it comes to what constitutes a foul , depending on whether it's one of their own or an opposing player. Imho Suarez should be lambasted for this type of behaviour but he's far from the only one. We see players get away with it all the time, along with diving and it brings down the great game we love.

    ReplyDelete
  145. Very good piece of journalism, fair and intelligent. Shame more football blogs aren't like this. The hostile comments are hardly surprising, but not very helpful.

    ReplyDelete
  146. As an Everton fan I can only comment on the bravery of the impartiality demonstrated in the blog. I dislike cheating in all forms, however this in some respects is not cheating like a dive or exaggerated theatrics in response to a physical challenge. No, this comes very close to what some in Rugby (and I played at the old first class level) as "enforcing".

You are factually incorrect in your piece inasmuch as the Miralles incident resulted in a foul and a reprimand. However Miralles was very much affected by the foul and failed to appear in the second half -job done perhaps?

The challenge on Distin did result in his booking, and to paraphrase Oscar Wilde, to tackle once like this is unfortunate, twice is careless but thrice well that would appear to reflect a certain pattern of behaviour or lack of technique.

I can understand why your colleagues can be vociferous in accusations of bias, and to that end would point out one event that you have singularly missed. Between these two games you played Newcastle. During this match two players, sons of nations with a fierce rivalry played opposite. One was dismissed for the intent to stamp the other. Although no true contact was made in the area intended to be struck, it was clear that the tackled player was seriously threatened with injury.

I am sure that you and your fellow fans will see the irony of the juxtaposition. Literally when the boot is on the other foot it's very plain to see when a stamp occurs.

    ReplyDelete
  147. That should be "commend the bravery" ....

    ReplyDelete
  148. People need to take off the blind folds on this. Suarez, along many other players, are not angels.

That stamp whether on purpose or not was dirty (IMO) and deserving of a red card. Suarez has a history of these tackles and other nonsense.

    ReplyDelete
  149. Dreadful repetition on this site, hard luck JK nobody seems to be singing your tune. Suarez is great and throwing the toys outta the pram about him ain't gonna change minds.

    ReplyDelete
  150. I don't write stuff to get validation from people and/or to change peoples' minds. That doesn't bother me. I prefer it if people disagree as that creates debate.

    ReplyDelete
