'El Matador' to Anfield? LFC 'in talks' with £30m double hat-trick striker...

A few months ago, Napoli Chairman Aurelio Di Laurentis confirmed that he would 'listen to offers' for star striker Edinson Cavani, and admitted that every player at the club could leave for the right price. The striker is coveted by many clubs across Europe, but according to his Agent, Liverpool are in pole position to sign the Uruguayan.

In an interview with Uruguayan newspaper El Telegrafo yesterday, Cavani's Agent Claudio Annellucci said:

"Liverpool and Arsenel are the first clubs that Cavani has agreed to talk to.

"It is no secret that Edinson want to play in England. It is one of his greatest dreams

"He plays football because he loves the sport. Fat salaries have never attracted him".

Speaking to The Mirror recently, Di Laurentis made it clear that all of his players - including Cavani - are available at the right price. He said:

"If they [other clubs] have the money to pay, I am waiting for the offers. There is never a real price. The price is what the clubs need and what is the hot moment of negotiation.

"But if somebody wants to make an offer, we are here to listen. You never to close the door to anyone because we are polite. In life, there is a always a price for everything. It is just a question of the right moment and the right people".

Di Laurentis's honesty is admirable, but such a cavalier attitude to important players will surely not engender a feeling of loyalty towards Napoli? How can the likes of Cavani be comfortable at the club if they can be sold to the highest bidder at any moment?

This is great news for other clubs though, including Liverpool, and if Annelluci is right, and £30m-rated Cavani is not interested in money, then the club may be in with a chance of signing him.

I don't know why, but I have a feeling that FSG will surprise everyone this January and sanction another big-money striker signing, and Cavani - nicknamed 'El Matador' by Napoli's fans - definitely fits the bill.

Cavani is on fire this season, and so far, he's grabbed 14 goals and 1 assist in 15 games for Napoli, including two hat-tricks.

Luis Suarez and Cavani play together for the Uruguay national team, so if talks continue, hopefully Suarez will try and convince his countryman to come to Anfield :-)

  1. We need to sign a big signing such as Cavani then a cheaper supporting striker with a proven record such as Shane Long who would give us pace and finesse coming off the bench

  2. I would love a buy like this but just Cant see it! Rodgers would have to change his formation to get the best out of suarez and cavani and i Cant see him doing this.

  3. it has nothing to do with the formation!
Hes a great player and he would do perfect with suarez ( as in the uruguayan national team) but i dont think he would come to us, you ll see if chelsea or Mancity dont get falcao they will go for him, so its unlikely a high quality player joins an upper mid table team as we are at the moment. just cant see this unfortuneately. the only thing, maybe suarez can tell him anything great about liverpool and the PL

  4. Id be more then happy with what you said if it came true and then 4th spot could become a real possibility

  5. What a reasonable reader understands from De Laurentis' words is that he calls for January bidders... As we've witnessed well ourselves, January provides for an over-inflated market, where you almost NEVER get value for money. If you are lucky, you can buy value by getting players whose contracts are running down in the coming summer. De Laurentis' mouth waters in the prospect of opening a bidding war for some of his stars in January, as this will definitely bring +25% as compared to potential summer money. Sorry guys, I know nothing from inside but this will not happen, as we will not and MUST NOT fall victims of such mistakes again. As BR has already stated, there will be some business done, but major re-shaping and re-building will take place during the summer... Walcott, Huntellar, Bony could be reasonable suggestions.

  6. he would be great with suarez. But the formation Rodgers plays would mean suarez having to revert to a wide position.

  7. also for the global appeal of the club it is imperative that we push for the best players.

  8. it wont though because its just more jk rubbish sorry speculation

  9. lol 30 million euros; get real with yourself. he'd probably sell him between 45 and 50 million euros..

  11. Shane Long is an amazing player, certainly not an impact sub. Made a mockery of Cahill and Luiz this weekend.

  12. Now, Cavani would make a lot of sense, for lot's of reasons, but probably just a pipe dream.

    ReplyDelete
  13. You link us to 2-3 players everyday... yawn !

    ReplyDelete
  14. Fingers crossed this is true, surely he would jump at the chance to join Luis.

Although City or Chelsea could always make silly offer?

Lavezzi was flogged off to highest bidder, Napoli have been offering their top players around Europe for years. Hamsik for example

  15. I thinnk this wouldnt be any problem, if we have a really profilic goalscorer as cavani is, its quite likely to play suarez on the wing!

  16. Hold on Sherlock. We bought Suarez in January transfer window.

  17. It's more or less the same formation Uruguay play where Forman, Cavani and Suarez start together. It's not rocket science, it's pretty much standard and the system we've been playing with since Rafa was in charge. For Mascherano read Allen, for Alonso read Sahin, Gerrard stays Gerrard, Sterling and Suso are Kuyt and Garcia and Suarez is Torres. With Cavani Suarez shifts into Suso's role but slightly more central. It's really quite simple actually.

    ReplyDelete
  18. sounds simple, but listen to Rodgers! He has worked hard on getting the best out of suarez and wants the system built around him! If he moves into the wide position he would have to work hard defensively to help out the fullback just as sterling and enrique did against wigan, as kuyt did etc etc.

  19. "John Henry confirmed that total assets under the firm's management had fallen from $2.5 billion in 2006 to less than $100 million as of late-2012."

Simple question, where's the money going to come from ?
Suppose we can still dream !?

  20. Unfortunatly guys it aint going to happen as Rodger's stated today we can't really afford anyone in january. As we can only afford bit part players. So it's another case of sell before you buy. The sooner we get these americans out the better. Oh Jaimie i think it,s wrong you get people's hope up as we both know this transfer isn't going to happen. We will more than likely buy another Swansea player before buying a player of his quality.. And thats a FACT!!!

    ReplyDelete
  21. I wish! Sterling cavani and Suarez floating wow! :P would be worth it.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Please god!!! Please, that would be a dream. But I doubt that it would happen not because of FSG (fingers crossed they deliver), but rodgers might be abit big-headed and go for another BORINI. #HOPE FOR FUNDS

  23. How wired is this since yesterday I've been thinking that all these rumors about Walcott , hunterlaar etc but no mention of cavani . Yes he may be expensive but what if we pay for him and another player for a lot cheaper that will give us quality plus that extra back up as well. We will buy some one we have not been linked with . I know we just been linked with cavani but no one expects this to happen coz they think the owners are tight. But I think they have saved quite a bit on wages since not buying anyone expensive and on high wages aswell as letting go the high earners . Like maxi , kuyt , bellers loaning Carroll also selling Adam and loaning spear

  30. ----------Reina---------
    ------Skrtel---Agger----
    Wisdom-------------Glen
    ----Gerrard---Lucas-----
    Sterling--Suarez--Enrique
    ---------Cavani---------
    Awesome!!!

  31. There have been rumours linking Cavani to Liverpool in the past...it all seems so perfect with these statements from his agent and Napoli. It would be great it he really wasn't interested only in the money and Luis & Seb could convince him to come to Anfield. What a dream that would be, Suarez and Cavani. Don't let us down FSG.

  32. Johnson should be RB and a new LB is required.
    Other than that I agree!

  33. Will not happen. Expect someone who is in vaguely good form from the Dutch/French league.

  34. John Henry manged a fund holding investors money and charged a fee for it.
He has simply returned these funds and I presume still trades using his on capital given thats how he started.
I stand corrected if you can prove the source of his funds was clients money which would infact mean he was running foul of SEC regulations that protects investors with Funds in hedge funds just like bank customers deposits are protected under legislation.
John Henry's often stated net worth would not include any of his clients money.
According to Forbes he had a net worth of over $1.1 billion as of early this year, a figure you can clearly see is in excess of the $100million or so he had under management and has subsequently returned unlike Bernard Madoff who could not return funds when his ponzi scheme collapsed.

  36. Come on Jaimie, don't play with our feelings. This would be incredible beyond words if it comes true! :-)

  37. Not going to happen! Nice dream though.

  38. If only the money that was spent on Carroll was invested on a player of his quality to begin with...

    ReplyDelete
  39. Complete plank. Enrique has a couple decent games now you want him playing on the wing. May as well play Carragher there for all the goals Enrique will score.

    ReplyDelete
  40. with all respect that i got for you, i would like to know where you got this information.. the source? ive looked for it everywhere on the net but couldnt get it. i find it quite weird coz its Edinson Cavini agent saying this afterall. and i expected it to be on many important and famous sites as well. so please tell me where u got this info kanawr

  41. Cavani is a great striker and his goal return has been very good for quite a few years now, in a league which is known for its tough defending. My only issue is that he gets a lot of goals but hardly any assists. Exactly that is Suarez's main issue and imo the reason why we haven't scored more. Suarez is a terrific striker but he often comes from the flank forcing wide players to come inside only for him to have a shot on goal rather than to go for the obvious pass. He always apologizes afterwards but apologies don't equal goals. That said, Suarez and Cavani has worked great for Uruguay, at least for while, so it wouldn't be the worst thing that good happen.

    ReplyDelete
  42. It'll be more like

    Reina
    Glen Skrtel Agger Enrique
    Gerrard Lucas Allen
    Sterling Cavani Suarez

    ReplyDelete
  43. Well he did play well there so why change you plank

    ReplyDelete
  44. It will be interesting to see exactly who the recently re-arranged scouting department have come up with. The "best" players are not necessarily the "expensive" players. There is talent there and with our present economic restrictions in lies upon the scouts to find and evaluate them. That it appears must be the way forward , not just for us but for most teams out there. January is going to prove quite a turning point one way or another for us.....

    ReplyDelete
  45. i don't really know if we will be able to get Cavani in Jan although would love him and Suarez playing together they will destroy defences. If not anyone liverpool should think to get back Torres even if he is not playing v well at Chelsea i believe he will start firing in red shirt again..

    ReplyDelete
  46. Suarez would just play behind Cavani and Sterling would go wide - at the moment Sterling is playing off Suarez

    ReplyDelete
  47. love your formation, would like to play lucas behind gerrard and allen though

    ReplyDelete
  48. I doubt Cavani would go to City to compete with Aguero, Tevez, Balotelli and Dzeko for a starting role (where he will probably be on the bench most times). Also, the other strikers won't be happy having to make way for Cavani

    ReplyDelete
  49. Cavani will not come in Jan and I would be very surprised if he ever comes. You don't sell your star player in January who has 14 goals in 15 games for anything less than 45 million. Even the least realistic liv fc fan wouldn't be able to imagine FSG splashing out 45 million on a player. There was a reason we were only able to make a net 15 million spend over the summer.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Shane long!!!! lol

    ReplyDelete
  51. cavani plays wide left of a front 3 for uruguay so rodgers wouldnt need to change formation - suarez plays through the middle with forlan on the right

    they play 3-5-2

    ReplyDelete
  52. This is a pipe dream. Wishful thinking to think that we can beat other top clubs who will want Cavani in the premiere league alone not to talk about giants like Juventus, Milan, Madrid, Anzi, etc from other leagues. A lot of clubs funded by Arab money could pursue Cavani and pay double what we can. Believe me Cavani doesn't have any loyalties to Liverpool. I find it hard to believe that he would chose Liverpool over other bigger clubs regardless if two of his country men are already at Liverpool.

  53. You left Allen out , Buck would neva leave Allen out

  54. a very sad fact ...

  55. if we need to buy a swansea player, i would love to see michu on board

    ReplyDelete
  56. Cavani is a great player but I honest think he'll be another Andy Carroll. I've watched him quite a bit in the past few seasons and he requires too many touches on the ball before he actually shoots. His positioning is ok but he very rarely takes a first time shot which is the type of player we need. I may be wrong it may work out but it'd be a massive risk which we've taken before and don't think we should again.

    ReplyDelete
  57. if u r playing cavani ... where d hell does sterling cum frm! borini will cum back !

    ReplyDelete
  58. Replace sterling with Borini I don't think so.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Reina
    Johnson Skrtel Agger Enrique

    Cavani

  60. Assuming we sign ince or a similar player, that is what I think Kaelon de Hahn means... and also what I believe will happen

    ReplyDelete
  61. Cavani would be a fantastic signing for us. However the fee and the wages might be a stumbling block. And Di Laurentis is not the easiest chairman in the world.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Remember Rogers has worked hard to get the best out of Suarez in the "current" situation.
He has had no option, he wants and NEEDS other strikers and they won't be to play Suarez or Mr "X"
That would make Suarez vey unhappy of course and will never happen.
Whoever the top deemed forward that joins us, will be doing so to play with him, nothing else would make sense.
