'Make us an offer' - LFC favourites to sign controversial €20m striker...

In August 2011, Agent Beppe Bozzo revealed that Liverpool were interested in signing Lazio star Mauro Zarate. Negotiations fell through due to Lazio's contractual inflexibility, but reports in Italy today suggest that the Reds have reignited their interest in the Argentinean striker.

Earlier this month, Lazio President Claudio Lotito confirmed that Zarate is definitely for sale in January. He said:

"The situation with Zarate has been clear since the summer.

"In January when the transfer window opens, we will be prepared to speak with any club that makes an offer.

"Make us an offer and we will evaluate it. However, there will be no loans considered, including a loan with an option to buy."

Now, according to several sources in Italy, Zarate's current Agent, Luis Ruzzi, spent a couple of days in England this week sounding out clubs over the possibility of a January transfer, and Liverpool are reportedly in 'pole-position' for the deal.

Lotito reportedly wants €10m for the 25-year old, which would represent a significant loss for the the club, after the initial €20m deal for the attacker.

This is the third time the Reds have been linked with a move for Zarate; in 2009, Rafa Benitez tried to sign him, but Lotito emphatically blocked the deal. He told reporters:

"There is zero chance. Lazio will exercise their option to buy Zarate and they will not sell Zarate to Liverpool, full stop"

Zarate has been frozen out of the Lazio set-up due to lack of effort in training, and Lazio manager Vladimir Petkovic recently suggested that the Argentinean lacks hunger and desire. He told reporters:

“Zarate's situation situation depends entirely on him. He must confirm his desire to start again. Over the last few days he has seemed a little better, with the hunger to prove his worth and this gives me hope he wants to get back on the field"

Is Zarate more trouble than he's worth? Would he fit into Liverpool's system?

  1. He'd be decent on the left, although we should probably aim higher.

  3. I liked the look of him when he was at Birmingham. Part of those current group of Argentinian forwards that are skillful, agile and small-ish. Watched quite a bit of Lazio last season and the season before, as Hernanes is a treat to watch at times. Zarate wasn't there last season but season before, they were brilliant in the first half of that season and Zarate was quite a big part in that, along with Mauri and Hernanes. I think he would look good in a interchanging attack.

  5. he is a classy player who can make things happen. like any player of his type he can be infuriating at times, but in his position players need to have an undredictability about them. i would really love to see him at liverpool, along with huntelaar. for me thats all we NEED to progress and then we can strengthen further in the summer. if we were to buy some other promising talents as well then that would be good but our defence and midfield is pretty strong and has decent depth so wouldnt need any expensive wastes of money in the tough january market. reina; johnson, skrtel, agger, enrique; lucas, shelvey, sahin; suarez, huntelaar, sterling. altenative 11: jones; wisdom, coates, carragher, robinson; allen, gerrard, henderson; suso, borini, assaidi. then players like pacheco, sama, yesil and the injured kelly would also be involved. to me that is really strong looking. of course theres no downing or cole because i want them gone!

  6. of course i totally forgot about zarate, which just shows how good our squad would be! (perhaps suso in midfield for henderson and zarate on the right)

  7. i dont think Cavani would come to liverpool and i dont think FSG are going to spend 30m on just a single player.

  8. We are getting linked to so many players right now it beggars belief. The transfer window is still over a month away. If we don't sign anyone early in January then we will have to endure those rumours for up to nine weeks from now. Awful.

  9. Why wouldn't they? They've spent 24 or so million on Suarez and 35m on Carroll.

  10. Too small...we already have those guys on the team. We need muscle, height, strength, a quick turn and release with a cannon for a shot.
