'I am calm' - €18m goal machine responds to LFC/Barca rumours. Bid...?

Before joining Porto in the summer, Colombian striker Jackson Martinez revealed that Liverpool were following his progress, and insisted that a move to the Premier League was one of his top priorities. Since arriving at the Estádio do Dragão, Martinez - nicknamed 'Cha Cha Cha', has scored goals for fun, which has attracted the attention of several big club around Europe.

Recent reports in Italy claim that Liverpool and Barcelona are tracking the €9m striker, who recently broke a club record (previously held by Radamel Falcao) by scoring 11 goals in 12 matches for Porto. The Portuguese giants are also unbeaten in 12 games since Martinez arrived.

Chelsea and Barcelona are also rumoured to be keeping tabs on Martinez, but what are the chances of a January transfer? Speaking to Portuguese newspaper OJogo this week, the Colombian responded to speculation about his future. He said:

"Sincerely, I have not spoken with anybody but this is a good thing for my performances in the Portuguese Liga"

"Rumours are normal because I am working with success in Porto and scoring goals but I am calm, if there are offers, it does not worry me"

Liverpool were linked with Martinez many times over the January and Summer transfer windows, but it seems unlikely that Porto would sell the Colombian so soon.

Having said that, Portuguese Sports newspaper A Bola claims that the Reds are willing to pay up to €18m for Martinez, and given his superb form for Porto, that sounds like a fair valuation.

Martinez is not the only South American player to be linked with club this year. Liverpool are also 'ready to move' on signing 26-year old attacking midfielder Luis Montes, who currently plays for Club León in the Mexican first division.

With Montes in top form, Club León has taken the Mexico's Primera División by storm this season, and after a string of great results, they're now in third place on 24 points, 9 points ahead of Pachuca, the club that allowed Montes to go out on loan.

Of the two, Martinez is clearly the more appealing option in a goalscoring sense, but if he was to leave, then the earliest a transfer would take place is the summer, which doesn't help Liverpool, who need a prolific striker in January.

  3. I would Cavani. Martinez would also be a great option, but I think Cavani is more likely. After all, Who sells their top striker just six months after buying him?

  8. Good looking kid with an obvious sixth sense for the net...but that was Colombia. Not exactly a soccer hot bed in the western hemisphere. I'd like to see some Portuguese league tape first.

  9. Why even talk about Porto players, they always have inflated transfer fees. If the player is on a Russian or Portuguese team it is too late. Clubs in those countries buy young and sell high(really really high).

  10. We should look at Wanyama and Watt(looks like a super sub type) from Celtic. Watt seems like he could be a good player, not just his goals against the evil empire but his strength and movement in general. Wanyama is already better than Lucas and honestly i am worried that United could get him, because that would really solidify their team. I know we got a lot midfielders but come on, nuri is not staying hendo might leave. Wanyama is the perfect dmf and he seconds as a central defender

  11. Like Falcao or like Duncan Ferguson?

  12. Nobody seems to consider this fact when talking up rumours - as if Porto would really sell a recordbreaking goalscorer for a marginal profit after 6 months, when they've even been selling defenders for silly money in recent years!

  14. If the offer is big enough, Porto will sell me thinks. Might be rare to sell so quick but wouldn't put it past these Portuguese clubs as it is their thing to bring in South Americans by the truckload and sell one or two at least per season for big money. Porto rely on this heavily and go down the 3rd party route to get these players if need be. If anything they seem to be a transit club for 3rd party companies, considering some of the stories you read. Hope they get looked at, the 3rd party situation by FIFA but we know how quick they are to look at things(!)

  16. I think he is about the same as Lucas but we couldnt compare unless he played for us, and on Lucas's apparent importance, is it down to his improvement as a player or the significant deterioration in the quality of the players around him over the last 2-3 seasons that makes him look a better player? only asking as i see pretty much the same player as 3 seasons ago though there is a slight improvement i would hardly have him down as a certain starter if we had Wanyama in the squad, would be a nice problem to have though.

  17. well allen as been covering for him and imo not doing a very good job and he cost 15 million lucas as come on leaps and bounds and will be a great player either at lfc or somewhere else if he does not fit into the rodgers and allen show

  18. I agree Allen has been far from great so far, problem we have is that you can see Roders is going to stand by his man regardless, as i think he could do with a rest or even just dropping but thats never going to happen due to Allen seemingly been Rodgers's son lol

As for lucas, i have never thought he was a bad player, i just think he has been fortunate that we have lost the likes of Alonso, Mascherano etc, as he was very poor when alongside them and was usually the weak link in the midfield, but as the quality around him as got worse he seems to have looked better and we all know an average player in a poor team will look a lot better, i mean we spent 70-80 million on them exact players..
