Ref blasts: Suarez deserves '3-match ban' for 'red card stamp' on Jones. Agree...?

Former Premier League referee Graham Poll has joined Wigan Manager Roberto Martinez in arguing that 'Jekyll and Hyde' Liverpool striker Luis Suarez should've been sent off for his stamp on Wigan's David Jones at the weekend.

In his column for the Daily Mail, Poll praised Suarez for his 'superb finishing', but called on the FA to hand him a retrospective 3-match ban. He said:

"Luis Suarez again showed his ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ nature with a superb display of finishing and then a studs showing stamp down on Wigan’s David Jones.

"It was a clear red card challenge which went unpunished

"Suarez is a wonderfully gifted player who needs to learn not to make such challenges and a three match retrospective ban would be a good start".

In a radio interview last night, Liverpool legend John Aldridge dismissed suggestions that it was a deliberate stamp. He said:

"Match of the Day will show the stamp, but not Suarez comforting and picking up another player he's just accidentally fouled".

Suarez will escape any retrospective punishment though because the incident:

* Occurred during play and:

* Was not an off-the-ball incident

Under FA regulations, the incident is deemed to have been seen, so no action can be taken from video replays.

Whether the incident was deliberate or not, it's all about perception, and given Suarez's reputation - and the comments of Roberto Martinez, David Moyes, Tony Pulis, Syalvain Distin et al - I imagine that opposing players will think that Suarez is doing it deliberately.

As such, there's a danger that the Uruguayan could one day be on the receiving end of a 'revenge tackle' by an irritated team-mate of one his 'stamp' victims (or even the victim himself) which could cause him serious injury.

It's not as if revenge tackles are rare in the Premier League, is it? (!)

Despite that incident, it's great to see the Uruguayan scoring goals regularly. He's now scored in 5 straight games for the Reds; not even Fernando Torres managed that.

As I've stated many times before, Suarez is an absolute joy to watch, and to be fair, he seems to be trying hard to stop the constant diving. Now, if he can only cut out the dodgy 'tackles'...

Whatever happens, Suarez is not going anywhere. When asked whether Liverpool would consider selling the Uruguayan, Tom Werner, the Reds' absentee Chairman said:

"Absolutely not. He's a beautiful player to watch and, as a Liverpool fan, I hope I'm watching him for many years to come. We made a long-term contract with him in the summer and we are going to see a lot of his play at Liverpool."

  1. That one didnt look good. Deliberate maybe? I dont know. But as you showed in another article, I didnt think the Distin one looked deliberate.
It could hvae ended up a lot worse for the other player deliberate or not, and its just good that he was ok. Also what happened to the guy in the first half who collided with Sterling?

  2. 3 cards Poll, a joker!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  3. It was an AWFUL tackle and he needs to curb it, he doesn't need to be doing that. That aside, double standards, if that was that Dirty olf man scholes or any man hoof player, there would not be a murmur from graham poll - no dobt he wouldnt want to risk his FAn Utd "pension".

    ReplyDelete
  4. What about getting off his back and it was a bad tackle but the way everyone is going on about it is out of order what about when he got stamped on what happened then????
There are worse tackles than that going on every week but because its Suarez everyone jumps on the band wagon
    Graham poll is a joke

  5. Majority of the time how many players put in challenges that are deliberate? I know Roy Keane did so on Alf Inge Haaland but most cases it's just bad timing of a tackle, lunge or high boot, i do believe most of the time these players are going for the ball and the replays make it look a lot worse.

However that doesn't make it right for someone to go unpunished for doing wrong, for me this challenge was a yellow card the tackle on Raheem Sterling by Figueroa was just as bad but no one is going on about that, it's because it Suarez that people can't stop talking about the man. The Distin challenge for me was a lot worse and deserved a red.

The ref and linesman must have seen this tackle and didn't think much of it if they did he would have been punished it was right under the nose of the linesman, besides if they had missed it the FA would have reacted and punished him which they are not going to because it was probably in the refs report as being seen by him.

  6. Broken shin. They hope that he'll be back training early next year.

  7. poll is the guy who booked Siisoko when he has fouled in the area by an everton player and objected and then let off Rooney for a foul mouthed tirade.
also he is the ref who told ferguson that he should take off Kean otherwise he was going to have to send him off.
ferguson wrote the forward in Poll's autobiography. payback time.
Who remembers the 1999 cup game at OT when Poll ensured MU got the goals they needed.
JK this man has no credibility so why are you giving him airtime

    ReplyDelete
  8. It could have been a deliberate stamp? It could be otherwise. After all the penalties, fouls and decisions that went against us from game 1. This Poll has the audacity to pick on LS
Very diplomatic of poll to play good cop bad cop.
Does this guy have anything of value to say?

  9. Now that Suarez' has reduced his diving the media find something else to beat him with. While that one surely hurt, it didn't exactly look like a deliberate foul. The ref obviously thought the same. We see worse tackles every week and most of them are deliberate. How about stamping those out first. The we can talk about turning football into a non-contact sport.

  10. so the witch hunt is still going on,the pace of the game was so quick i think anyone could have done the same i don't believe it was deliberate, most of the time i have respect for the ref's but, instead of having ago at suarez why don't they have the courage to look after him because i have seen him take some really nasty tackles'but, they are scared of upsetting the f.a

    ReplyDelete
  11. Why is everyone going after Suarez? The accusations and judgments passed on Suarez is getting preposterous and quite frankly, getting out of hand. Just because it is Suarez, people just goes on and on and on attacking him at he slightest possible chance they have.

There are worst incidents that this one and you don't find people making such a big fuss about it. I don't think Suarez intentionally stamp but its just the way he plays.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Do you mean Poll or the author? Can't think why any right thinking true Liverpool supporter would want to accentuate the negative ALL THE TIME. WHAT ARE THE MOTIVES FOR THIS?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Suarez is an enigma, someone who is just not understood by the masses. He is a talented individual and of that there is no doubt but he seems vulnerable to sudden lapses of bad judgement. He has been in the news for all the wrong reasons as well as for scoring great goals for the club. He is certainly a special player shouldering the burden of providing most of the offence for his team , the many minor controversies are brought about by things he could have definately handled differently.

    ReplyDelete
  14. It was a mistimed challenge no different to the thousands that a certain Paul scholes has been guilty of and got away with over the years. People need to wind their neck in if this was any other striker it would not of had a mention.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Jones just gets to the ball before Suarez and Suarez transfers all his weight on to his other foot if you look closely it was just a tried to block the ball and was beaten to the ball by Jones, Jones got straight up and if the foul had have been given then there wouldnt be any of this it doesn't look good but in context of some of the other tackles in the game that was nothing at all

    ReplyDelete
  16. Graham Poll must hate Suarez with a passion. Give him half a chance to criticise Suarez and you can be sure that he will grab it with both hands. Since the Evra-Suarez fiasco, he's been having goes at him almost weekly. Interestingly, Poll has overlooked the kicks and stamps Suarez has received throughout his time in England because he never mentions them or even alludes to them indirectly. The funny thing is that whenever he mentions Suarez, he attributes all the wrong deeds other players do in the EPLm week in week out, to him. Poll hates Suarez with a burning passion.

    ReplyDelete
  17. This is a yellow card offense at most, nothing more.

Such incidents happen a lot in football, almost every game.

You can clearly see that Suarez wanted to go for the ball, but he came a little bit too late.

Nothing deliberate, nothing malicious in that tackle.

    ReplyDelete
  18. graham poll is talking about suarez having a 3 match ban for an undeliberate tackle on jones!!! so what about the stamp that suarez received month ago by robert huth of stoke city on the stomach????? these refs are just jealous that liverpool has a good player in the form of suarez!! YNWA El Pistolero!! :)))

    ReplyDelete
  19. agreed! couldnt have put it better myself

    ReplyDelete
  20. Before i thought it was a shamefull deliberate tackle but on second glance i am convinced otherwise. You can clearly see that Jones swings his right foot to the left at the same time Suarez goes for the challange. How can Suarez, at this speed, avoid stepping on his foot. Impossible. But the timing was bad.

    ReplyDelete
  21. You got that bang on

    ReplyDelete
  22. Graham Poll does not know how many cards make a red! He is a cmplete joke.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Poll cannot even remember to give a red to a player he has booked twice, how can he now see the red in the tackle

    ReplyDelete
  24. Poll always loved being the centre of attention & knew he,d get plenty jumpin on the suarez bandwagon, the premier league has an awesome player in fantastic form & idiots like Poll would love to put the brakes on him, the tackle in real time was a yellow card at most.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Generally, FA should adopt what the MLS and their Disciplinary Commitee do, in relation retrospective powers on diving, dangerous tackles, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Absolutely agree on retrospective powers, but I don't think he deserves a punishment for this one. This year he deserved couple of bans, this one-no.

    ReplyDelete
  27. It was a hard tackle without a doubt but deliberate, I don't think so. Suarez gets kicked, pushed and pulled throughout the 90 minutes and obviously likes the more physical side to the English game so is only giving as good as he gets. Unless we want football to turn into a non contact sport all commentators, former referees and managers need to stop whining and watch a game of rugby on a Saturday afternoon to see what real commitment and tough tackling is all about.
I think Suarez has cut out most of his antics in the last 4-5 games and deserves credit for this along with credit for his sheer brilliance.

    ReplyDelete
  28. So they're on about stamps now, are they? I don't remember hearing anything when Hugh stamped on his chest though. Disgusting double standards. Someone needs to do a Benitez-like rant and point this out!!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Ah, everything is "Suarez this, Suarez that," "He's a cheating, diving, racist c*nt." Those who support him, keep supporting him. Those who hate him, keep hating him. He's in prime form, and thanks to him we're not languishing in 18th, 19th, or 20th place. Vamos Lucho!

    ReplyDelete
  30. And the Graham Poll dude didn't even talk about Huth's stamp on Suarez. So convienient! And Jamie is actually supporting Suarez, I find this romantic :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. Been laughing for two minutes, thanks for the romantic comment mate...

    ReplyDelete
  32. It was a bad foul, and he deserved a red card for it. But given the number of obvious penalties he was denied (not including the dives), he deserves to be let off the hook.

Also - you mention that Tom Werner is an 'absentee' - there's been a lot going on in Boston with his Red Sox that has required more attention. Besides, I'm sure he's been advised to lay low for a while for his own safety.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I did think the foul was deliberate and although it doesnt make it right I can understand forwards getting one in on a defender when the later spend 90 mins kicking lumps out of the former every week.
If you watch the clip closely Suarez foot lands on the exact spot the ball had been a fraction of a second before. Its still studs first and late but not as bad as it looked.

    ReplyDelete
  34. First you said it was deliberate and then you say its not? I agree with the second part, at the beginning of the clip it looks like a 50/50 to me and some i'm sure some people would complain if he did not go into that challenge, yes its prob 1/10th of a second late but i do not think was on purpose. Why would he deliberately put himself at a huge risk of getting sent off.

Jaimie I remember towards the end of last season a number of ex LFC greats started saying that Suarez was not a 'natural goal scorer because he wasn't clinical enough, despite his amzing goalscoring and assist record at Ajax . Looking at his Liverpool record now would you agree with me that they were wrong and maybe a bit quick to make assumptions. I think Lawrenson was one of them but can't remember

    ReplyDelete
  35. I can't believe that this graham joke poll has column in the newspaper. If he was refreing the match he'd probably give Suarez three yellow cards. What a joke he really is. VAMOS LUIS SUAREZ.

    ReplyDelete
  36. anyone who has actually played the game will understand its a typical strikers poor tackle, not intentional just careless and poor timing.
ive seen rooney for example get away with far worse and it be deliberate , but because its suarez its a chance for all the snipers to shoot him in the back.
the poor bloke is trying to be in the headlines for all the right reasons

    ReplyDelete
  37. when u play the game high tempo like luis does and committed to winning the ball sometimes the ball goes a spilt second before u arrive. he stood on his foot big deal!! shit happens its a mans game. and u no what there ain t no brakes on football boots!!

    ReplyDelete
  38. poll is the one that gave three yellow cards to the croatian player against australia in the 2006 world cup haha

    ReplyDelete
  39. how about seeing it from the angle suarez was actually trying to close the ball down. forwards tackle simple as

    ReplyDelete
  40. Jamie is this the same idiot (GP) who was scared to send off Shrek for swearing at him 27 times.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Poll should be given a pole on his back. Why only choose suarez when there are other worst tackles. Poll should shut up and leave it to the ref's. He forget that he is no longer required by the ref association.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Poor tackle, but I'd say you could pick out something similar at least once a week in the Premier League. No need to suggest that it's deliberate, even the word "stamp" is excessive. It's a poorly timed challenge with studs recklessly coming into contact with the opposition player. Could certainly have been given as a red card but referees are human beings and there is some real inconsistency in the league when it comes to what is punished and what is not. Suarez got away with a bad tackle while in previous matches we've seen LFC players sent off for less. That's the nature of the game and refs just need to try their best to get the decisions right as often as possible.

    ReplyDelete
  43. why didn't he comment when Suarez got stamped on his head double standard Poll, just go away fool and hibernate like a bear u moron

    ReplyDelete
  44. I watched the game on Saturday, rewind the "stamp" incident a couple of times and have to say it was just a poor tackle without malice. If Poll wants to find a foul to gripe over a red card not issued, I think he should look at the foul (with studs up and showing ) committed by the Wigan left back (Figueroa) on Raheem Sterling.

  45. Robert Huth???

    ReplyDelete
  46. in case you don't remember, it was Alex Ferguson who had the ball rolling... He is always the instigator when it comes to Liverpool! He knew back when Liverpool beat Man U 3:1 at home that we were on a good wicket with Suarez!
The only way to beat him is to cause him grief and try to oust him out of England!
Now, like he planned everyone else had jumped on the band wagon...

    ReplyDelete
  47. Exactly. Adebayor and Huth's flying, both feet of the ground kick with their entire body weight going into it were far more dangerous and deserving of sending offs. Suarez is clumsy in the tackle but at least he is committed to winning the ball back.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Poll, You and your kind ruin football. and you sir and no more than an oxygen thief!
its a mans game mistakes are made!

lots of love football in its original form (last seen in the 80's)

    ReplyDelete
  49. I think that you've proven your point Jamie, we now in brick wall territory. We all know that if it was El Hadj Diouf doing this we wouldn't have backed him. But it's not. Suarez is an amazing player and that supersedes all negative traits just like a new iPhone supersedes questionable employment conditions for their workers. Liverpool fans are starved of success and he is our last true chance of getting it back. I think you know that and while you may find it unacceptable it is the way of the world. Liverpool fans aren't any different to any other set of fans. We are prepared to accept a darker element in players characters as long as they do the job on the pitch. And Suarez is amazing right now. If fans didn't support him like they do he'd have left in summer and we'd be in the bottom three. Morality and football diverged a long time ago and trying to posthumously insert that back into the game is fruitless. David Chase, creator of The Sopranos, once said that the hero of the piece can be as distaste as you want personality wise as long as he was good at his job. Football is entertainment and Luis Suarez has the star role for LFC. We can all delude ourselves for as long as we like, the bottom line is that he is indispensable to the club and thus has a certain leeway in our affections.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Personally I just think that when Suarez is in the moment he just doesn't care so much. He either wants the ball or he wants to gain an advantage and if someone's leg is in the way oh well. I don't think he sets out to rake his studs down someone's ankle. I don't think he aims to kick someone in the chest. I don't he sets out to goad someone racially. I just don't that in that moment he cares much. If it gains him an advantage he''ll chance it.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Poll are you serious????....given your background as a "Ref" have you forgotten that neither the ref nor the linesman had an issue with the tackle, refs are always mouthing off about fans having to respect the refs decision ...so why does that not apply in this instance. I also note the point of 3 match retrospective ban....why isn't he pushing for this to also be introduced when refs make bad decision's that affect the outcome of a game.....sorry I forgot ManUre would have a major problem with this since they are the main beneficiaries when it comes to bad referring ....me thinks!!!

    ReplyDelete
  52. graham poll dose not hate suarez he said it in his paper to sell papers love him or hate him[suarez] everyone as an opinion and hes just like the rest of the pundits nothing else to talk about so he jumps on the suarez bandwagon everyones at it no mention of that cheeky chappy schoals mistimed tackle at the weekend sorry did i say mistimed meant reckless but its schoals so like the pundits i will call it mistimed over enthusiasm its schoals he dosent mean it

    ReplyDelete
  53. If you look at the way Suarez wins the ball back he plans his foot just infront of the opposing player then moves the ball quickly with the other foot, he does this multiple times a game. That one was mis-timed and he caught the player. Looks much worse than it is/was.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I wonder why Poll doesn't talk about Huth's stamp which was clearly deliberate and he escaped without punishment even after the match. No one ever seemed to talk about it except for LFC fans. Its these kind of double standards by the refs thats spoiling the game. Poll certainly got an agenda against Suarez. These kind of challenges happen in almost every games and only Suarez's challenges gets the highlight. Hypocrisy by English media and refs

    ReplyDelete
  55. Actually, I find all the spite towards Suarez or any Liverpool player to be disgusting. I challenge the same people to scrutinise every game and line up every guilty player instead of trying to gain popularity by painting Suarez over and over. Then you have managers trying to influence the referees by telling them what to do with Suarez during the game.It is turning into an abuse of Suarez and I think it is time the Players Association, if there is one show their solidarity. We accept the fact that Suarez may be have the halo over his head every minute, yet can any player of former player claim they do? We see players from almost every club committing themselves and perhaps mistime tackles yet do you see any videos showing it over and over again? Is there any legal avenue for Suarez if these individuals continue with this abuse and character assassination?

    ReplyDelete
  56. Addendum: We accept the fact that Suarez may not have...

    ReplyDelete
  57. Clear stamp.

Should have been a red card.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Graham pole just proved how ignorant he is with that statement. Say Pole. Can we be given that goal that was disallowed against Everton if LS gets given the red card.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Thats because Paul plays for Fergie's Association

    ReplyDelete
  60. come on, have you people forgotten that he received a deliberate stamp on the chest, OF THE BALL, while lying down? oh, IM SORRY, is it because it was Huth? Oh, my bad then. GTFOH with that, Suarez is ONLY hated by people who dont support Liverpool cos he's not their player! Keep on with the hate, he'll keep on scoring- unless one of these bucket-heads influence a player to actually go for a revenge tackle. YNWA

    ReplyDelete
  61. bad decisions by refs dont cancel out just like that by giving decisions in your favor later. Football is not played like that. that is wrong

    ReplyDelete
  62. Let's take a "poll". was it or was it not?

    ReplyDelete
  63. He's trying to lift his foot over the ball to get his body between the ball and the defender. Its not an intentional stamp but it IS a dangerous technique he uses and he will get sent off if he keeps doing it.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I dont think I explained myself very well. I meant I origionally felt sure it was deliberate but having looked at it several times its not as bad a challenge as it first looked. It also looked at first that he had gone over the ball. Which he hadnt.

On your second point, they said the same about Henry at the start of his Arsenal carrer.
