Denied! Boss confirms £15m attacker will not leave in Jan. Bad news for LFC...?

Last week, Anfield legend John Aldridge admitted that he would be 'very happy' to see the Reds sign Arsenal attacker Theo Walcott during the January transfer window. Over the last year, Liverpool have been constantly linked with a move for Walcott, but Arsene Wenger has now slammed the door shut on any possible January transfer.

When asked if Walcott could leave the Arsenal in January, Wenger told reporters:

"Will he [Walcott] stay until the end of the season? Yes.

"We continue [with contract talks] in a positive way. We have until the end of December to sort it out."

Walcott's existing contract runs out next summer, and Rodgers has already contacted Arsenal about the possibility of a deal, but is yet to hear anything back from the the London club, who are allegedly 'willing to enter negotiations with both Liverpool and City'.

In an interview in October, Rodgers was again asked about Liverpool's interest in Walcott, and he responded:

"There is nothing to say [about Walcott]. He is an Arsenal player and it is all speculation about many players at the moment"

Wenger's comments suggest that a January deal for £15m-rated Walcott is dead in the water, but he also states that he has 'until the end of December' to sort it out. What happens if the situation is not resolved by then? Surely, Wenger's hand will then be forced, and he'll have to consider selling in January?

From Rodgers' point of view, it's easy to see Walcott's appeal: he's young, fast, creative, and can play on the wing, or up front, though, to be honest, I'd rather Liverpool spent the money on a different player.

  1. Sterling is much, much better. Wouldn't mind having Walcott in the squad, but not really necessary...

  2. To me, hes more of a winger than a striker..and if he comes to our club saying he wants to play only in the ST role then it'd be difficult as BR likes to keep on changing formation depending on the way the match is going..In that case there are better choices..

  3. he is perfect for Rodgers because if he goes 3-5-2 from 4-3-3 Walcott would have a good versatility to do so

i know it doesn't make sense

  4. liverpool should luke 4 other attacker, not walcott,

  5. He wants to play up in the centre up front, which is why he wants to leave us. I don't see Liverpool offering him that ahead of Suarez.
I also think he will want to go to a club that has a chance of playing in the CL, and I think Liverpool are a long way of that. i have a horrible feeling he will end up joining up with RVP at Manure next summer.

  6. i would like to see Walcott brought in and Downing go away like a bad dream at night. While both Walcott and Downing are considered both pacy players it is clear that Walcott is the better player of the two. Walcott has a little better technical ability. The fact that Wenger is willing to let him go for nothing in the summer underlines how much value Walcott represents to Arsenal so much so that they will hold unto him for as long as possible till they are forced to let him go. For some strange reason Walcott who prefers to play as a central striker wants to leave a team that has successfully finished in the top four for many seasons for a team that hasn't seen Champions league football since Rafa Benitez was manager. Now that has been a little while now.

More pace and good technique on the ball is what Walcott would bring with him so i am of ofcourse in favor of signing him. Just wish we could have this transfer in the bag by January instead of Summer. Liverpool is also being linked with Guissepi Rossi of Villareal who recently got relegated. Rossi has a knee injury and has been out of action for a while. It troubles me that Rodgers would consider an injured player even if his services would acquired on the cheap.

  7. If Theo wants to join a team on the up, then he must join Liverpool.

  8. Rossi is class and we can get him for peanuts, yes he is injured but only 25 still.

  9. Just how exactly is this bad news. Walcott another massively overrated british player. And just cos he supports liverpol, I really hope we don't sign him.

  10. He scores goals and makes them too, don't we need that?

  11. straight swop for reina !! sounds good !!

  12. something about Walcott reminds me of Michael Owen. Neither player has a great first touch or is particularly good in the air. Neither is capable of an incisive short pass or expansive long pass so their strengths are all based on high speed attacking with Owen excelling over the first five yards and Walcott over a little longer. The problem for both players is that such a narrow area of ability means you are vulnerable to a significant deterioration in ability as you near your late 20s and injuries slow you down. Michael Owen with pace = Top rated European striker, Michael Owen without pace = Stoke City benchwarmer. I fear that Walcott will go the same way despite having greater all round technical ability than Owen.

  13. So you really think he's good and worth 15 million English pounds.

  14. £15 million rated???? Boom, boom.......

Walcott plays like a child, no football intelligence whatsoever.

Maybe if we snapped up for £4 million in January, but £15 million??? I assume you mean if he had a long term contract he would be worth £15 million.

    Sterling is far better

  15. Injured player, no thanks

  16. Llorente or Cavani...we need somebody big enough to muscle people off the ball and who has a quick release. Walcott is a good player but Raheem is better, younger, and already mixes well with his mates.

  17. Not sure about 15mill, but he is a young potentially good player that we could do with in our squad. We'll never get the Cavani's etc because we can't afford them and we don't offer Champs League. If we get Walcott at a low price, I'll be happy because I'd rather have him than a Borini type player, because thats the kind of choices we are facing! Get real!

  18. Good news......LFC didn't need Theo Wallcott and Daniel Sturridge.

  19. I agree with you JK. for 15mil we could get a first class striker from an african or south American continent. maybe even 2.

  20. no way £15million for walcott is not good business. If we get him for nothing in the sumer then hes an option i wouldnt swap him for sterling. and £15 million would be much better spent on a out and out striker. we could never get the likes of lorente or cavani but im sure we could get a decent striker from elsewhere.

  21. Would rather have Walcott than Sturridge. seems like we are attempting to get the later :-(

  22. If it was a short term injury, than I'd agree. But its a long term injury, this is the second time he has had the same injury (first time was in Oct 2011 and this second one was in spring 2012). So who knows where his game is at and how it has been affected. His agent said that he won't be fit til March. We need someone immediately, as we barely have any senior strikers.

  23. Hope we don't get Sturridge. So annoyingly greedy. Though considering our lack of consistent goal-threat in the last third, apart from Suarez, maybe we could do with such greed.

  24. Excuse my ignorance but isn't this the same Arsne Wenger who said that Nasri,Cliche, Van Persie etc would not be sold ?
Only for them to be sold in the same transfer window?
    Nevermind what happened with Fabregas.

  25. I would actually like Walcott to come. I have changed my mind. He will gets us goals.

  26. Spot on ! Wenger's comments should be considered in the same light as the chairman's vote of confidence.

  27. It may be for some but it is good news for me. we are quite endowed with wing players now and don't need to waste £15M on another. We should concentrate on an out and out goal scorer and FINALLy put this bogey to bed!

  28. Great news imo. They can keep him for another six months and then we'll have him for free. It would be like Joe Cole but better.

  29. Looking at the current LFC side, we create enough chances. If BR has a 45 million kitty- Go for Falcao! We got many midfielders who can create - suso, gerrard, sahin, shelvey. We have many wingers - assaidi, sterling, now enrique & johnson.
