'Top class!' - LFC offer Jang Hyun-Soo one-week trial

Liverpool continued to be linked with talented young players across the Globe, and the latest name on the list is South Korean U21 star Jang Hyun-Soo, who is set to undertake a one-week trial at Anfield.

Reports in Japan claim that the Reds are interested in signing the 21-year old central defender, and have offered him a one week trial in December.

Hyun-Soo currently plays for FC Tokyo, where he's made only 6 first team appearances so far.

If the trial is successful, Hyun-Soo - who is 6'1 - will cost Liverpool around £1m.

FC Tokyo's official website contains the following description of the defender:

"Calm, composed centre back with top-class decision-making ability. Covering, positioning and game control all excellent. Can contribute to attacking build-up"

  1. I realize he's Korean as I write this, but he plays in Japan, so don't jump on me as I write this.

The Japanese style defense looked amazing durring the Olympics, and it's employed by a lot of the teams over there. The only real question I have is whether that style will work with the attacking phillosophy that BR is employing. It seems like a widely varried style that might make him a star in Japan, but might ask things of him in Liverpool he can't deliver on.

A 1 week trial isn't going to kill us, but if he's being asked to learn a new system and adapt in a week, they aren't going to learn much about him.

  2. Adapt to what our new system requires us to have ball playing venture backs and he seems to naturally be one looks like a fantastic talent and hopefully a bargain at 1m. These are the types of players we should be going for more often.

  3. It'd be good to get an Asian player for the marketing aspect, but also for the fact that their is a strange paucity of Asian players in England. Lost in all the discussion about football and race is the fact that Asian players are enormously under represented. It'd be nice if a Liverpool player inspired some kids out there.

Most importantly, I hope he can play to a good standard!

  4. Absolutely agree. LFC have a huge following in the Far East which could be generate millions from the sales of merchandise. Extra finance equates to better buying power equals quality signings. Don't know much about this lad but we need to sign an Asian player to give us access to this market.

  8. Jason i am sure that Liverpool Fc under Brendan Rodgers will properly vette his targets before he signs them. With a new scouting network in place and as transfer funds are limited any potential transfer target will be thoroughly researched (or at least I want to think so) to make sure that they will fit into our style of play.

Foot-ball coming out of Asia has only gotten better over the last couple of years. Japan and South Korea have both kicked up their game significantly. A South Korean team coached by Guus Hiddink finished fourth in the FIFA world cup of 2002 if anyone can remember that far back. Since that time the level of football has only gotten better.

The premiere league may not have a lot of Asian stars but the talented ones will only eventually find their way to it. Hyun-Soo at 6'1 represents a good investment in the future. It is hard to accurately judge a player from just a youtube video but i like to think that he would do a great job to shore up an inconsistent defense. Our guys in the back have many good days in the office but seem to have more bad days than good and that is not good.

In closing I think that a lot of talent is available in Asia at cut rate prices. Man U just signed Shiniji Kanawa from Japan and he seems to be doing okay for them. We need to take a careful look at Asian talent.

  11. do the math. 1mil investment and millions in returns on merchandising. Korea and Japan. I agree it's not colour or creed. It is business.

  12. Jason why are you being so negative I cant say he is good or bad from 1 youtube video but at 21 years and 6`1 with his technical ability he can grow and do well for us aswell as improve our revenue. Honda and Kagawa came from that league.

  13. Andy Carroll a second rate player that doesn't belong in a first rate league, the same goes for Downing. Come to think about it, I doubt either one of them can even make on the team as this Korean guy in Japan. Jason, you think that your race or league is the best? Well, just let the world know when you Brits will win the world cup?

  14. our following isn't as big as man utd's. asia and america is the markets we need to tap into be dominant over man utd. but the main ingredient to this however is on field success

  15. I agree, it would just be the best of both worlds if we could have a quality Asian player on the books. If you read my comment, you'll see the idea about making some money was only a tertiary concern for me.

  16. I really hope LFC can sign all these youngsters that are linked to the club lately. Fees for these youngsters are not exceptionally high, especially in the case of this South Korean boy. Any of them may turn out to be another star in the league. In case they don't, it will not be a big lost for the club. We really cannot afford another 35 mil pounds 'player for the future'.

  17. "hione -soo at 6 ft 1 represents a good investment "

  19. FSG are not a bottomless pit, nor are they a charity, they are a business. Perhaps you can suggest a way that they can generate income other than from merchandising ? Thanks to the previous manager/managers we certainly have no players to sell at a profit !!

  20. no i never said british is best at all a said it was a third rate league whitch it is

  22. This centre back have good skill defending and calm control the ball. But can he deliver the game when facing combative team as Sunderland, Stoke or Everton?I'm worried he only small size physicall can tackle very well to tough or bigger size players? He only good to generate more income for clubs.I think we can sign him...

  23. It's simple really, Daniel Wilson's contract expires in June 2013 so he will be most likely be sold in January, either to the Championship or back up to Scotland my guess would be.

With this in mind and a philosophy in place at Liverpool that requires defenders who can "contribute to [an] attacking build up", replacing Wilson for Hyun-Soo seems like a great idea. What do we have to loose? Replacing a 5th place center half for another, I say, you never know he might turn out to be the best thing since sliced bread.

That’s without mentioning the commercial aspects of such a deal.
