Liverpool 9-2 favourites to sign £15m LFC-loving star. Is he needed...?

England winger Theo Walcott has reportedly rejected a new contract with Arsenal, which could open up the possibility of a move away from the Emirates before the transfer window closes on Friday. Could Anfield be a possible destination?

According to several top UK bookmakers, Liverpool are currently 9-2 favourites to sign Walcott, ahead of Chelsea (16-1) and AC Milan (20-1). The odds are changing regularly though, with the Reds and Manchester City trading places at the top.

The 23-year old's contract runs out next year, and Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has already about the possibility of a deal, but is yet to hear anything back from Arsenal, who are allegedly 'willing to enter negotiations with both Liverpool and City'

One thing in the Reds' favour is that £15m-rated Walcott is a huge Liverpool fan, as he revealed in an interview a couple of years ago. He enthused:

"I was a Liverpool fan simply because my dad followed them. Unfortunately I wasn't born when the team had their golden era, but I enjoyed watching the likes of Michael Owen, Robbie Fowler and Steve McManaman when I was growing up. When Liverpool won the Champions League I went mad. I was shouting so loud I think I woke up the entire village where I live!"

I'm not a huge fan of Walcott but his end product over the last two season was far superior to any of Liverpool's attacking midfielders:

* Last season: 11 goals and 10 assists in 48 apps (43 starts)
* 2010-11: 13 goals and 13 assists in 47 apps (34 starts)

Walcott is a goalscoring attacking midfielder, and Liverpool need that type of player, but his wage demands would probably be too excessive, and IMO, the club should spend any remaining transfer funds on a striker.

Should Liverpool make the signing of Walcott a priority?

  1. Let him come next season on free transfer. We need find a real goalscoring ability.

  2. He can play upfront and on the wings, he would add real depth to the squad. I would definitely take him!

    ReplyDelete
  3. No he is a little girl! Too many bitches in our team

    ReplyDelete
  4. Iker Muniani is the man. Sign him before other big clubs.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Man i saw dempsey last season he is too slow for the LFC system. og yeah and overrated. the Fulham team is built around him as was in the case of AC+ hes too old.

    ReplyDelete
  6. While Walcott is overrated in most other departments he is the second most dangeruos player on the counter attack(in BPL) indeed only Bale is more dangerous. I wud have him for 10m.

    ReplyDelete
  7. To answer your question. I'd say NO. But should be top priority if we failed to sign a striker of good quality and reasonable age (and of course, price)

    ReplyDelete
  8. Tep but just think what kind of message we would be sending if we do buy him. It will show that Arsenal are slowly falling behind and Lfc even in their worst can attract CL class players. It will also up the morale in the dressing room. Psychologically it would be a huge buy to take one of Emirates' fav guns

    ReplyDelete
  9. He is absolutely not needed at all! The powers that be will assuredly buy him though . That's the way they are.....

    ReplyDelete
  10. Why is Liverpool considered favourites for his signature? We know this is BS. The club clearly has no money to spend, unless we sell.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I would love to see Walcott at Liverpool, the prospect of having two pacy wingers Walcott and Sterling at Liverpool would be mouthwatering and Liverpool will be really dangerous in counter attack.

    ReplyDelete
  12. £10m max, he's really not that good. Sterling will take his England place in a few years.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Yes, too slow (!) but he managed to score 23 league goals.  What are you talking about?!

    ReplyDelete
  14. The idea that LFC has no money to spend is paper talk, and typical public tactics from the club.  LFC are not going to come out and say 'we have shedloads of money to spend!', or clubs will exploit that.  The club has money to spend on the right players.

  15. Would be a fantastic sighning . A real show of intent. Am i asking for too much if we coold also land Affelay ? I suppose it all depends on how much is recouped from player sales. Either way it will be an interesting few days.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Rodgers will probably move him to right back

    ReplyDelete
  17. assaidi anyone ? we have borini on left with stewie as cover and asaidi and sterling . walcott don't think so, a striker is more of a priority

    ReplyDelete
  18. Im an Arsenal fan and i would drive Walcott to Anfield myself to get rid of him espially if you lot are stupid enough to part with £15m.

    ReplyDelete
  19. And carroll who scored 11 goals in 19 games for NUFC must be faster than Messi then.

Sarcasm aside id like to say that Dempsey has a team built around him, thus the no. of goals, same goes to holt of norwich and Bent of Sun'land and Villa, they both have a team built around them. +Psychologically, Walcott would be a bigger buy than Dempsey.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Why are we constantly being linked with wingers, what we need is a goal scorer, a consistent striker,
All you people that think Dempsey is the answer will be proved dwrong if we do sign him.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yeah give him pls tell wenger personally. Do u even realize what is happening at your club. Oh and do tell ur gaffer to lower the price to $10m and u hav a deal.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Dempsey has been playing in the PL for years; Carroll had only 6 months experience.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Thats what i told Jamie, however i think Walcott cud be our false 9 u never know. He is at his best in quick passing game like the one against mancity and he is lethal on the counter+ 23 yr old with a lot to improve.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Walcott is very inconsistent. As Arsenal fans say "You never know which Walcott may turn up on a day!"

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yep i think it would really be too much. However, the message that wud be sent if we can buyy Walcott will be a good one.

Maybe a loan move for Nilmar, would be quite smart.

    ReplyDelete
  26. he is atleast deadly on the counter.

    ReplyDelete
  27. yep imagine borini and sterling tiring the fullbacks and then the sight of assaidi and walcott about to come on is quite ........tiring for FBs.

    ReplyDelete
  28. No, Jk i really think we have no money. 50m loss, staff sack etc etc has really hit our budget hard. Thus the loan move for sahin without even any buy back clause. Atleast sahin has said that there is a slight chance of a permanent move.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Thats not the point, dempsey will not fit into the system, however considering Walcott has played in AW's pass and move system he is the better of the two.......at the same price.

    ReplyDelete
  30. But i am confident he is dangerous on the counter and in the quick pass and move system that we are adhering to.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Just read, Charlie Adam wants Liverpool to pay him off £2 million for leaving the club and he will not take any cut in his salary when he joins a new club.

What a greedy pig Kenny has signed!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I wish you were right Jamie but Rodgers has already said that we don't have the money this year.

    ReplyDelete
  33. So JK Hypothetically who should we sign if we can sign 1 more.

    a) Walcott
    b) Dempsey
    c) Sturridge

its not easy because (and this is only my opinion) If we signed Dempsey it would be an Instant short term signing. We would get an aging proven goalscorer with the added benefit that commercially he would earn us fortunes in the USA especially with the owners. I would think this is more of a consideration than would he improve the squad.
Walcott is a fast athletic player who can leave defenders trailing in his wake. Like youI am not fully convinced but there will be no shortage of interest in a player with his stats and international pedigree.
Sturridge is more difficult they signed him for his potential from City, loaned him to Bolton were he excelled and then took him back to Chelsea. I dont think he has set the world on fire since his return but he could do a job for us.

So which one would I sign, well I would beg FSG for more money and sign Walcott and Sturridge. But as a matter or urgency get rid of Henderson, Adams, Downing (never a left back) and unfortunately for me Big Andy. its a shame because I would have loved to see him this season but its probably not to be.

Also just to confuse matters further Sinclairs talks with City have broken down so he is another one that may come into the mix

    ReplyDelete
  34. it would show that arsenal are falling behind if liverpool buy him enam10 you are a idiot.the club that paid newcastle 35 mill for carroll, are newcastle behind you? last i saw they finished above you.your club in the last few years have wasted over a 100 mill on useless players, carroll, adams, aquilani anyone remember him? downing, henderson,so any of them do anything at all? if arsenal were going to sell walcott why would he go to a europa team?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Maybe because they don't understand what you are saying. Could you repeat that in proper English please?

    ReplyDelete
  36. £15m for Walcott and £10m for Dempsey, how is that the same price?

    ReplyDelete
  37. IT was reported in the beginning of the season, that Liverpool's transfer budget would be somewhere between £20-30 million.  Right now we have a net spend on transfers of about £26 million.  FSG may not be as skint as some make them out to be, but at the end of the day, a budget is a budget is a budget.

    ReplyDelete
  38. is there a reason for resoting to words like "idiot"?

i suggest u take a good look at your owners and the condition of your beloved team. Yes we overpayed for some players but then again what does it have to do with walcott? im hoping walcott that walcott joins us not saying its a confirmation. Unlike you guys we actually respect our top players if they leave (Torres and Owen are exceptons). and even if walcott does come its the same reason why sahin came- they want a club that tries to keep its best players and not sell them.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Dempsey without a shadow of a doubt. The fact that he is 'ageing' is irrelevant; Dempsey is a fantastic athlete, and he's only 29! His game is not based on speed, and he would not just be a short-term option. LFC could get 3-4 years of top service out of him IMO.

Dempsey is a winner; a fighter; a no-nonsense player who will come in and hit the ground running from day one. He's a real man, not a ladyboy like Walcott. He doesn't need a manager simpering in his ear and massaging his ego; Dempsey will just get on with it, and the team needs experience and strong mentalities right now.

Dempsey all the way, plus Jordan Rhodes for 6m.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Walcott might join us for the same reason sahin joined us.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Because he is a fan of Liverpool and arsenal themselves may well be on their way to becoming a Europa team.

    ReplyDelete
  42. What else is he going to say in public? 'We've got loads of money to spend! Come and rip us off' (!)

Tom Werner said a few months ago that LFC 'has the resources to compete with any club in the PL'. That is true, and if a signing can be justified, the money will be spent. The Joe Allen signing proves that - FSG sanctioned 15m despite the fact that, objectively, LFC are overstocked in central midfield.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Enam - I've edited out that insult. Gunner - please do not attack other posters.

    ReplyDelete
  44. do u think anyone will pay more than 10m for walcott and anyway the figure u said is newspaper spec

    ReplyDelete
  45. I don't see how Arsenal are ahead of Liverpool. Even though you claiming to be be in the champions league., you don't have anything to show in that area. Arsenal is a falling club that is loosing its best players year in, year out.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Agreed! I still rate Sturridge and Walcott though... Dempsey plus 1 would be amazing, any of these mentioned (Jordan Rhodes would be excellent too!)

    ReplyDelete
  47. Walcott is an inconsistent player. I'd choose Dempsey over him any day. He's been consistent for years. He's a top player, in his prime.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Teh 2nd most unreliable news site

    ReplyDelete
  49. jamie k clint dempsey a real man?? doesnt need a manager massaging his ego, sorry there's me thinking he was on strike?

    ReplyDelete
  50. we as fans will never understand the ins and outs of top level football because if we did we would be in it a/f isnt daffed nither is b/r

    ReplyDelete
  51. On strike? According to what, The Daily Mirror?! Dempsey is not on striker; Steve Nicol - who managed Dempsey for years and is close to him - confirmed this last week. Why would Nicol lie? He knows the guy, and I'm more inclined to believe him than the tabloids.

    ReplyDelete
  52. How come when Rodgers said he wasn't being forced to sell anyone you posted a blog about it because you felt that proved a point! But now you feel differently over his statement about his budget? A touch contradictory Jamie don't you think?

    ReplyDelete
  53. If Downing becomes left back, why don't we make Carroll Center Back as well.

    ReplyDelete
  54. if LFC goes after every player thats pops up what r we going to do with are young players coming up he's a good player but i think the young ones who are making they way will give you more

    ReplyDelete
  55. Fully agree with you on this one Jamie. If he were a more creative player in the Hazard mould it would be a different matter, however Walcott is simply not that kind of player. I think there is still place for a creative winger at Liverpool (Alan Dzagoev of , although with the emergence of Sterling and hopefully also of Suso this might soon no longer be the case.

At the same time, a fox-in-the-box (a role which none of our three main strikers - Sánchez, Carroll, Borini - seem to be able to play) would enhance our goalscoring options. Who that player might be, however, I have not the slightest idea ...

    ReplyDelete
  56. walcott is a striker and thats his preferred position

    ReplyDelete
  57. Now that's a player - if Rodgers could pull that off he's a genius!

    ReplyDelete
  58. I think you are right there Jamie. The owners have funds but are not going to spend it unless they are convinced they are doing it for the right reasons. Having been burnt by the transfers of Carroll and Downing in particular, it is hardly surprising after all ...

    ReplyDelete
  59. I think - and hope - that Rodgers will only sell players for the right price. I am thinking of both Carroll and Downing here. Converting Downing into a successful left full-back will increase the value of the player, while making Carroll work in this system is better than selling him for peanuts.

    ReplyDelete
  60. No place to take I'm afraid - Walcott appears to have already been displaced in the England team by Chamberlain!

    ReplyDelete
  61. What an incredible waste on someone we have no need of!

    ReplyDelete
  62. I think he would be a great addition. No doubt BR would aid him to improve on his technical side. Although Theo is a rapid player he lacks technique.

Saying that he does chip in his fair share of goals and is used to the quick passing system Arsene deploys therefore he should fit right in.

I think BR could turn him into a beast. Him and Sterling on the wing would cause havoc...in the long term of course.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Ha ha ha ha!!! Reliable website there.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Good shout on Dzagoev. He would be an interesting signing :-)

    ReplyDelete
  65. yeah!!we can make coates as CF...

    ReplyDelete
  66. Jesus, you are a serious pedant. What does my comment below have to do with having to sell to buy? Absolutely nothing.

    * Rodgers said that he is not being forced to sell to buy.

    * I stated that he wouldn't come out and say 'we have loads of money'.

    Both statements are mutually exclusive.

    But you know that.

    ReplyDelete
  67. agger on right wing

    ReplyDelete
  68. Apparently we have first refusal on him. To me the Sahin deal is great for us. Little to no risk. How else do you want to get champions league players to play for us?

As for the no money, that is just a load o poppycock, i think we have spent well so far and with an addition of a striker we will be set. Also if the player is good enough FSG will pony up the cash

    ReplyDelete
  69. Who is Sanchez?

    ReplyDelete
  70. There is a buy back clause its in the 40m region

    ReplyDelete
  71. jeez thats all we need Brendon Rogers turning into David Moyes and playing players out of position ! next thing is you will be suggesting Reina plays in goal .........

    ReplyDelete
  72. Walcott demanded £110 grand a week, Arsenal said no,(sportinglife.com)
So that leaves Man City the only club who will pay that salary, but remember NANI is still available,

    ReplyDelete
  73. Demsey is 29 and Theo is just 23 year old and I belive Theo has a great eye for a goal , and Glen.J at the same side behind him he can absolutely play as second striker.

You are missing the point. Both points Rodger's has made refer to our transfer budget. Obviously, as you stated, it would not be in his interests to say that we have loads of money. But also it would obviously not be in his interests to say he is being forced to sell. However, you posted a blog about this to try and prove something. Clearly It didn't.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I wouldn't sign nani on a free

    ReplyDelete
  76. Walcot = Pace....incredible pace, personally i feel he's very much a confidence player, needs the arm around the shoulder, BR would im sure bring out the best in the guy, he needs to develop his game more though and probably will peak later in his career but when he's on form he can destroy defenders and doesn't have a bad finish either, that said i can't see him coming here, Man City will prob buy him and stick him on the bench to replace Johnson....

    ReplyDelete
  77. Walcot would be a great signing for us. He fits right in to the system. He is about to hit his peak years, and he is a Liverpool fan. Sterling have shown us over the last couple of games that the team look more more dangerous with pace in the line up.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I would much rather let him do his last year at Arsenal and then got him for free. Time for some karma for what happened to us when Steve McManaman walked away and when we lost Owen for a measly 8ml.

    ReplyDelete
  79. This would be a joke of a signing he is very very overrated and the end product is usually not there, when he is in the mood or having a good day then yes but there not very often.. if we are prepared to apparently pay £15 million for walcott when sinclair would possibly cost £8 million then BR or whoever need their heads testing!

    ReplyDelete
  80. we should sell downing, henderson, adam, carroll, and all their mothers to make sure we can get this guy he is quality!

    ReplyDelete
  81. Massively overrated. I hope we don't buy him.

    ReplyDelete

Why is it that whenever I make a valid point you delete it?

  83. great player, does not fill his potential at arsenal. would make liverpool so much better, alan and gerrard through balls etc, who could catch him????
hes a 20 mill player all day long, so 15mill is a bargain.
striker and wing problem solved, we would have 4 quality strikers with different attributes, 3 of which can play wide.
    it makes sense

    ReplyDelete
  84. I can't be bothered to deal with your sniping. You are constantly sniping in some form and you are so obsessed with tryong to prove me wrong that you can't see the wood for the trees. I don't have time to endlessly justify myself to you.

  85. Tello would have been a great buy - surely Dempsey is a waste of money as there won't be a resale value. Not totally convinced by Walcott - I would prefer to use the money to try & get Sturridge, Munaian or a top class centre-back. If only we could get the money back on most of K Kenny / Comolli's signings.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Sahin joined because Mourinho didn't want him to go and play for Arsene and we paid more for his loan fee than Arsenal. Forget his PR talk given a level playing field he would have gone to London.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Don't get me wrong I'm delighted to see Sahin at the club - but lets be realistic, it dragged on so long because he was angling after going to Arsenal. Thank God Mourinho can't stand Wenger.

    ReplyDelete
  88. tryong! oh, you are so proved wrong!

    ReplyDelete
  89. Good call. All this talk about re-inventing Downing as a left back though is surely just a way of trying to soften or help justify another bad buy from the previous management. For the amount of money we paid for Downing you could pretty much have bought any top class international left-back.

  91. I've been told, on more than one occasion, that I look like Steve Nicol, so, on that basis, hell yeah, to signing Clint Dempsey (I have been on the red wine in case you are wondering, but, in vino veritas, as they say in ancient Rome)

You've got me wrong Jamie. You write what you think on this site to debate football and you like to have an individual view. I respect that. I agree with a lot of what you post but I agree less with some of the methods you choose to support your views. If I disagree, think you are wrong or are contradicting yourself I let you know and I like to think my points are always valid. Surely that's healthy! Or do you  prefer people to just agree with you?

    ReplyDelete
  93. Interesting that these stories continue, considering BR himself has said we can't afford to sign any more players until we've sold a few. The budget's done. Look at what we've spent on changing managers and the players we've bought. That's it. Done. 'Til next summer or those players he wants rid of are gone.

    ReplyDelete
  94. For 10 million I think he could be useful. I have been persuaded by his versatility. He would fill two voids in our squad- striker and winger. I think he would work well in a fluid front three with Suarez/Sterling/Borini. I also think he would thrive off of the service from Gerrard and Allen. With all that said, he is still young and his resale value wouldn't fall too much even if he was to have a dry spell here. IMO therefore, we should put an offer in
