Longari confirms: LFC make €15m bid for Serie A goalscorer. Good news?

As most Liverpool fans would surely agree, a new striker is needed at Anfield, and hopefully finding a prolific goalscorer will be must be one of Brendan Rodgers' top transfer priorities this summer. Who to buy though? Well, according to one Italian journalist, Liverpool have made an offer for Roma striker Fabio Borini.

During Italy's 'SportItalia' TV show last night, Italian football journalist Gianluigi Longari revealed some inside info about Borini's future. He said:

* Liverpool are in negotiations with Borini.

* The club has made a €15m offer for the striker.

* The Reds face competition from Hamburg and PSG.

Borini worked with Brendan Rodgers when he was a young player at Chelsea, and again during his 2011 loan spell at Swansea City, where he scored 6 goals in 9 appearances.

Borini - owned by Parma - is currently on loan at Roma, and that agreement ends in August 2012.

The 21-year old has grabbed 10 goals in 24 games for Roman, which is a creditable return, but hardly prolific, which is what Liverpool need right now.

Would Borini be a good addition?

Think there are a lot better players out there for similar money. De Jong for starters.

Hmmm. I'm not sure how I feel about him. Would rather have someone one else with a bit more experience. The Vitesse Ivorian striker looks good.

Well, we'll see I guess...

It appears fairly obvious we will have to gamble on potential rather than established stars. Hopefully Rodgers and the scouting team will choose a few gems that will light up the Premiership, maybe Borini is one of them. Reading a players stats only tells half of the story, stats don't mention a lot of traits a footballer needs to succeed especially at Liverpool and in the EPL in general. A great scout can watch a player and without OPTA and notebooks can tell if the player has the potential to succeed.

10 GOALS from 24 games is not a bad return for a young striker but still think we could do much better..

it was far from obvious that we needed a good back up striker last  season for injuries and competition bellamy was used as a winger last season and hes in his 30 s, a good player yes but not a player with the ability to last a season with hes knee problems a striker is a priority

Flynn said...

Has anyone actually seen him play? Is he quick? Skillful? Hard worker? Good finisher? Good in the air? What type of striker is he? I prefer to see us linked with Sturidge. But that's only because I know nothing about this Borini fella. And from what I've seen of Sturidge, i like. Just needs to add a bit of defensive responsibility to his game and he'll be a top player.

if this guy was any good, and he was gonna be bought by lfc this video does him no justice

Hes fairly small and quite quick, fairly quick. Think of a young Di Natale. He is good, but not right for LFC. If he was fiiting of England Chelsea would have kept him. He was a Chelsea player at one point.

Hey we shud not believe everything. I heard we signed Rasmus Elm(THE SUN's news)  but it was all a lie. Now the Italian journalists are trying to hype up Borini. No ways Liverpool can spend so much on an unproven player. JohnW.Henry wont allow it

I hear he cheated in a Maths test when he was 10.
Do we REALLY need another controversial player like that at our club, Jaimie?

RedWill said...

I don't know anything about Borini apart form what ive just read since hearing this rumour. I would suspect most people posting are in the same boat so don't think we in the best position to say if he will be a good signing or not.

Carroll and Suarez are FIRST choice so if we buy a striker it will be somebody like Borini who is young with potential, who can prove cover while developing. Do not expect a big name striker as thats not going to happen.

Davidshakespeare73 said...

He was not treated well in Chelsea. Rodgers knows him very well. I guess Borini will be our 2nd buy this summer. Gylfi is the first one. Liverpool Echo mentioned both Borini and Caulker as players Rodgers has on his shortlist.

Dionysus said...

Regarding Sturridge. I think the biggest mistake Liverpool made was not getting him as part of Torres deal. That way we wouldn't have been forced into buying Carrol. Just think that was a huge pressure/forced buy. With Sturridge and Suarez we could have waited until the summer to splash the cash on a striker.

Junglove1 said...

Have no real logic for this (as I have seen little of either player).. but would  I prefer Luc Castaignos. Call it gut instinct.

Thomas10Ralph said...

He probably would have bee treated better had he been something of promise for them. I take your point though, he probably is coming to LFC - and maybe we need a player like him, a poacher. I think the physically he might struggle though, but then again Rodgers did well with Swasea with a small team really. We will see.

First of all, people saying Luuk De Jong is superior need to be reminded the Italian league is far, far superior to the Dutch league. Secondly, how the hell can people complain if most of his goals are 'tap-ins' - HE IS A STRIKER! It is a GOOD thing if he is scoring a lot of tap-ins because it shows his positional skill, his finishing ability and his attributes as a STRIKER! He is 21, we will not attract big names like Cavani with our current league standing and he seems to be the perfect example of FSG's transfer policy...

Jk384 said...

Not way off. Though it is more like Affelay for £8mil
and Sturridge is closer to £15mil. Tello is £7mil, by Barcelona's own admission...

I've liked the look of Borini for a while and was surprised when Chelsea jettisoned him. We were actually linked with him last summer as well.

As pointed out, he is the perfect FSG signing- young, low wages and resaleable. I find it hard to believe he will cost 15m Euros.

scoring 10 in italy is harder than scoring 10 in the EPL, plus he didnt start every game. rodgers seems to be keen to take very safe bets on his transfers. its hardly surprising after the wastage KD oversaw. imagine if rodgers makes any transfer mistakes, he'll be booted in no time.
sigurdsson seems very low risk at under 9m, considering his age and performance in the EPL. at 15 m for FB appears slightly more risky. 15m would buy us wolfswinkle or other quality players but the fact is, rodgers knows this guy and has worked with him, that gives him first hand experience of the players strengths and weaknesses, attitude, mentality and adaptability. that counts for a hell of a lot. relying on videos and scouts is a minefield. both sigs and FB are young and would not command huge wages, both can be moulded and both clearly have some synergy with BR. they would not devalue too much, and they are tried and tested.while FB would not be the first on my list , what do i know? im an armchair supporter who has worked weekends for many years, mostly abroad and been unable to goto games. i can only go on instinct and my gut says to trust BR, he is not careless like KD, not likely to politik like rafa, not going to play boring football like woy, and not going to waste heaps of cash on dross like all of the above, souness and houllier.getting the older, high earners off the books is a good idea, lowering the age of the squad is also a good idea. not clogging up the squad so youth can break through, yet another good idea. FSG and BR are going in the right direction. in fact, we just don't have any choice with the might of other clubs spending power. there's a lot to be said for this way of doing things, it can create a team spirit way beyond that of any big spending sides with teams full of superstar money grabbers.if BR thinks FB is the best bet for the money available, im inclined to trust him. it will be interesting to see how big his budget is, cause, if its true that sigs and FB are coming in, thats 23.5 m of a supposed 30m spent already. that leaves around 6.5m for a right winger...and if the interest in the young spurs defender is also true, it means we'll need to do some selling aswell. i really hope we sell big time charlie, but as a mate pointed out, he's unlikely to shift easily. the only way is down for him after LFC. he's just not cut out for the big time, and we have aqua back now anyway, a far superior player.

nice comment , but i didn't even take time to read all of it. You lost me when you said that Liverpool is in need of young strikers. I think we need experience up front more than youth. Yeah we can mold youth and we can save money on by signing them young. We just have to forego play in any major competition while these youngsters develop their game. From the clip i just saw of Fabio Borini is not world class nor does he look like  a prolific goal scorer. I watched him play for Roma and I wasn't impressed.

We are already molding Carroll , it is time to get a proven goal scorer to Anfield and yeah it means spending a little . The bottom line is to get back to being a competitive side sooner than later. The sooner we get back to higher place finishes in the table the sooner we can attract other top class talent the sooner we can participate in top class competitions the sooner we can earn the   coveted huge television ratings deals that all the top clubs enjoy.

In my opinion signing another young vastly inexperience player would be a waste of resources , and would set the club back. We don't need anymore average talent the club is full of average talent.

We just need one Marquee signing , one prolific finisher in front of goal . Someone who can come in and give you 15 to 20 goals a season . That would do a lot to inspire the rest of the team to pick up their game. No time for rookies. That is what Borini is and the club has grand ambition of finishing in the top four next season and sadly this player is not the answer.

Calls into question what BR's priorities really are for the team next season. Dempsey would be a better target. He is at the top of his game, and would come cheap too.

Firstly, those saying "Get Cavani ... Get Lewandowski ... Get Huntelaar" need to realise where Liverpool are at right now. We haven't got hatfuls of money to spend on transfer fees and wages, and at the moment cannot attract the biggest names. Instead we will be reliant on canny transfer dealings and great coaching.

Borini is a goalscorer, if you watch footage other than what has been linked here you can see that. Don't criticise him for scoring tap-ins, thats a GOOD THING! For proof look up Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Filpo Inzaghi. If Rodgers can get the best out of him and utilise his potential then he will be a steal.

If we (Liverpool) sign him I'll be intrigued to see him play and look forward to hopefully watching him realise his potential.

Rowanuk said...

just can't see the board going for a big name in his prime while the budget is as it is. buying 3/4 players with the 30m can improve the team more than by adding a supposed goal machine. our weaknesses under kenny go way beyond our lack of goals, the whole midfield is a joke. in fact our defence was the only good thing, aside from a couple players.
sigurdsson will be part of a 3 man MF , behind which there will be gerrard and lucas/henderson. in front of that will be luis, carroll and a winger/bellamy/new forward/downing/sterling rotating.we need cover for lucas, ie a proper DM, and another good CB on top of the new forward and right winger that rodgers said he's going to buy.Rafa bought 2 star players in aqua and johnson, when arguably, some good scouting and 4 less expensive players could have saved his job.we are working under a new modus operandi these days, and its about time there was some strategy to our transfer dealings, because money has been burnt since kenny left the first time.i would like to see cavani come in, but im not so sure i want the club taking such risks in the current economic climate . there's a balance and i think FSG are doing thier best to find that. Carroll and downing are , although perhaps poor ones, examples of FSG's willingness to spend big. if rodgers is as good as rafa at improving players and implementing tactics, with a few decent additions, we'll be closer to 4th than many think.

No longer about purely money, we cannot offer CL football which means the top young ones such as De Jong will look elsewhere. Haven't seen enough of him to comment but from that video he seems like a poacher which is absolutely what we need right now. He will receive my support.

get cavani? are you serious? yeah lets just out in £30-40 mil on one of the hottest strikers in world football. when we dont have champions league football. and after finishing eighth. and then there is his wages. seriously, think before you post.

you will probably be one of the fans criticising a managers because he doesnt go out and buy these players and signs a sigurdsson or borini player and then when they are good you'll support them and pretend you always have done.

I'm not sure people are listening to what's being said at the club: this will not be an overnight success. We need to reign in our expectations. Do we want to get better as soon as possible? Obviously, yes, but Rodgers has said very publicly that this will take time. The owners know that now and the last set of people to accept this piece of wisdom are the fans. So any player we buy now is not going to be a magic bullet. There will be no 40 million pound bid for a guaranteed goal-scorer, or an established world-class midfielder. We will sign players who will make us better but this is going to take a number of years.

However I don't think Rodgers is looking just for 'budget' players. Instead I think he's looking for players who will be very good for the club for a very long time. They might not be superstars now but he'll buy these young players on the basis that they will be amongst the best in the world and we'll see that sometime over the next 2-3 years. So we're not on a restricted budget and looking for bargains, it's more involved than that. We won't be buying any more players over the age of 26 because they can only give us 4 years of their best and that's not enough. Instead we buy players at 22 or younger so they can give us 8 years or more of their best. That they happen to be cheap is not the number one consideration.
Having said that, if there is a 21 or 22 year old superstar out there that would be happy to come to Liverpool and be assured of success to match his price tag then I think the club will put out the money to buy them. Talk of a 30 million pound budget is nonsense. Henry and co are multi-billionaires with deep pockets. We overpaid for players under Comolli but all that means is that now they'll be more discerning, not less likely to spend. I think the money is still there to be spent.

What we need is a centre forward like Rush. He was not a classy type of player. But he scored more than 340 goals. mostly tap ins. look at his goals. 2 touch and shot. Goal.

Positioning is key. opening up for passes, making intelligent runs. these are attributes to a great goal scorer. Who cares if it is tap ins? As long the end result is Goal. The ultimate reason for playing football is score goals. I read somewhere that a bad pass is not the fault of the passer but the receiver because of bad positioning and not anticipating to open up to receive the ball.

I am sure there are many upcoming young talent that can be groomed into such a role, but these goal scorers thrived on instinct to score. Scouts should look at these type of potential. Knocking in goals week in week out.

If we can get another Ian Rush type of player, half the battle is won.
Good luck Rodgers.

I trust BR to bring in who he feels will improve his team.

Just look at Demba Ba last season, everyone would have said he wasn't good enough for us and now we probably couldn't afford him!

Whoever he brings in lets just get behind them and give them all our support.

Kengkinny said...

So when was the last time an established attacking player with average stats (goals and assists per minutes on the pitch) joined a top team and  metamorphosed into a prolific goal scorer?

I think the answer is never. Scouts may be important to spot unfinished young talent, but are highly overrated when it comes to buying established players.  You didn`t need a scout to know what kind of production rate you could expect from the likes of Demba Ba, Pappiss Cisse, Mata, Silva, etc... They produce exactly the same they did in their previous clubs.  Which is also true for Downing, who presumably was selected because of someone believing that their scouting skills were more relevant than Downing`s poor statistical career track record.

If you can list examples that prove otherwise I will stand corrected.
