Savage: there are TWO reasons why Chelsea will beat 'woeful' LFC. Is he right?

Former Leicester and Blackburn midfielder Robbie Savage is adamant that Chelsea have the advantage over Liverpool today, and he's tipped the Londoners to triumph in the FA Cup final later this afternoon.

Speaking to the BBC, Savage - who recently argued that the current Liverpool side 'is the worst he's ever seen' - conceded that the Reds have been very strong in cup competitions:

"Liverpool in the league this season have been woeful. Home defeats against teams you wouldn't expect, but this is the cup, and they've been very strong in both competitions, and they are a cup team.

Liverpool have indeed been excellent in cup competitions this season, and they also have the edge over Chelsea after winning the last four meetings between the two clubs. None of this cuts any ice with Savage though, who gave two reasons why he believes Chelsea will beat Liverpool today:

"I'm going for Chelsea to win though; they've got more belief, and they have better players"

I'm not sure how he measures belief but I'm sure Liverpool's players have just as much belief as Chelsea's players. He's probably right about the Blues having better players overall, but in a cup final situation, that is not always the deciding factor.

  5. Because Savage's predictions about Swansea, Norwich and Newcastle have proven sooo reliable this season haven't they Robbie?  :P

Honestly I think it's too close to call, both teams have had a lot of problems this season, league in particular, but saved themselves somewhat with other competitions.  It really is just going to depend on which players bring their best on the day.

  6. 3 or 4 of whom wont even be available or get on the pitch today.
Chelsea are in for a shock if we come out the blocks and attack as we used to in CL games.  And yes we have the players available today to do that.

  15. It doesnt seem like a cup final day to me,my overriding emotion is just disappointment, despair and wasted chance. The first thing i did when i got up admittedly 3pm after a long night was to look at the odds for next LFC manager and the joy i felt when i saw Rafa had been cut to clear favourite by all the bookmakers was unbelievable.

Yep, you guessed it Reina did........

Oh and anyone notice Suarez up front NOT linking up with anyone....????

And then there's ENRIQUE.....what a wonderful performance from him...., stifling our attack......losing the ball....giving away posession.....

Nice bit of SABOTAGE in the first half....looks like some of our lads are intent in throwing this one as well.....

    Nice...

Well It's 2-0 To Chelsea, we have played poorly no tactical awareness from Dalglish.
We all knew he's going with Henderson Downing and no doubt we'll see Caroll and I bet if Adam was fit he'd be playing.

FSG MUST ACT....DALGLISH MUST GO !

Well done lads....pulled off a right humdinger there..way to go to throw a game.......but what makes me laugh is that the british players i.e. Spearing and Downing etc were not really at the races either....until Carroll came on it looked like we couldn't score to save our lives.....

Speaks volumes about how poor we were overall.....

Oh well, Kenny you have just finished digging your own grave, the trust we put in Suarez was misguided...the trust you put in Reina was also misguided......the lack of trust you put in Carroll came back to haunt you......you fcuked it up, all by yourself....YOU were the manager....YOU should have highlighted these areas of weakness in the side be it sbabotage or not YOU have failed LFC time and time again this sesason....

Enough is enough, a change is gonna come.........

Kenny Dalgish has shown his credentials this season.  FSG....it is time to show yours.

Right now is the perfect window of opportunity for FSG to show strength.....I believe WE will in turn back them 100%.

Opinion has swung, FSG need to take this opportunity to act before Kenny's hypnotic powers again begin to resurface.  A true legend of the game he is BUT If Kenny doesn't go now we will be lost at sea for years to come.

Ps Well done Carroll.  Looked like like a man amongst boys out there today.

  36. With Downing, Spearing and Henderson all starting and Carroll on the bench, it came as no surprise LFC lost.

  37. Wilson Michaelpaul8:56 pm, May 05, 2012

Carroll took the game by the scruff of the neck and was unstoppable when he came on  - proud of him today and ive often slated him this season but today he believed  - that first half and the first ten or fifteen minutes of the 2nd half were woeful and not worthy of an LFC cup final side .

thought kenny was very classy in defeat as well - the players let him down AGAIN !

    ReplyDelete
  38. He called this pretty much spot on though - we saw the Liverpool 'cup' team during the last 30 mins. Sums up the season - the team usually couldn't be arsed to play but give them a Chelsea team on the backfoot with 30 mins of a cup final remaining and tehy're all great players then - just don't ask them to have to put it together when playing Wigan or Fulham or ... etc.

    ReplyDelete
  39. In a weird way that's a good result for LFC -  a win would mean Dalglish would definitely stay in place for another season, same as Istanbul menat that Benitez was untouchable for so long. Now Henry can make meaningful changes: get Martinez in as manager, get rid of Suarez, Kuyt, Gerrard, Carragher, Spearing, Downing, Adams - bring in Moses, Ba (depends if the Toon get into CL), Ben Arfa (as for Ba). No more Stevie Me type players that think they're bigger than the club. (Gerrard learnt it from Ince, check Gerrard's book. Ferguson dumped Ince about 5 minutes after he started that crap but LFC have kept Gerrard on for about 5 years after his sell-by-date). Still, you'll always have that glorious victory over mighty Cardiff to look back on when you're remembering 'King' Kenny's second coming.

However, as a Man Utd fan, it would be brilliant if LFC brought Rafa back - it would keep the laughs going another season or two while he works his way through umpteen players trying to figure out which players could make up a team - he might even get one together for 3 months again like he did in March/April/May 2009.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Was he playing today?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Its not about football - its about pretending your a welsh choir roaring out a song from a 1950s musical - that's what's important.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Exactly. LFC fans need to face reality - Dalglish is not the messiah (damn good manager in his time though, and highly respected throughout the game, and the world for that matter, for the way he handled Hillsborough and after). But while LFC fans were telling Chelsea "you've no history", Chelsea fans were able to reply "you've no future". Not true in either case but there's an element of truth there if LFC don't get their act together.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Looks like those predictions from the fans of LFC doing the cup double were once again proven how deluded they are. I said we would not win it, so poor cant describe it. No flair, no pace lack of ideas. Yes we were better after spearing was replaced (I said at the start of game we wont do nothing with him in the side and I was proven once again right) Dalgish has no tactical brain and he wont do sweet FA. I wonder what the board will decide now that they have lost out in the final. Is Foolgish going to be shown the door like Comolli?

LFC are going backwards not forwards. Very wasteful and poorly run club.

  44. Go back to your club. What is a right laugh is that your still talking about Benitez to this day. The man had a title challenging team with a shoe string budget in 5 years. He was putting together a puzzle for Liverpool, bringing a good player a year. Look at the stats and the fees for his signings before you start talking.

Your just like your manager which is why I can see you supporting Man United. Squabbling and making no sense on a touchline, while your rivals City and Manicini are going for a title in under 3 seasons in charge.

Look at the stats and the fees for his signings before using a keyboard.

  48. I don't believe Dalglish was playing was he? and hell yes it matter's to me as well!,I have supported this great team for over forty years, but it's no use bitching about Dalglish all the time, there are a lot of player's both new and established who just are not performing and playing with the passion that playing for LFC should mean!,there are a number of player's who need replaced in the upcoming season's end starting with Reina his performance's this season, NO PASSION!!.Ultimately it is the player's who are at fault for our poor season, getting rid of Dalglish will not make thing's better!

    ReplyDelete
  49. How many goals has reina let in at his near post? a bit like Kenny a great servant but times up Pepe.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Henderson is awful, downing isn't much better, we seriously need pace on the wings with the inclination and ability to go past players, We also need a proven goalscorer

    ReplyDelete
  51. Rafa or Dalglish - it's win-win for United and Everton fans.

    ReplyDelete
  52. f*cking reina, near post AGAIN!!!!!!! how many times???? the midfield was as weak as pi*s. why didn't kaut get longer???? kd, you are too fu*king stubborn. open your eyes to the fact, your signings have been crud and you must dispense with. i would keep carroll, give him the service and he will thrive.

    ReplyDelete
  53. United are in transition, after having £500m taken out of the club by 'robber baron' owners (something LFC fans know about after they went through something similar with Gillett/Hicks) so I'm reasonably satisfied with the season (i.e. joint top with two games to go - I won't be complaining if Abu Dhabi's £1billion franchise win it now but the fat lady hasn't turned on her microphone just yet). I've seen far worse seasons (e.g. 1974 or 1981).

Ferguson has done a few more things in football than squabbling on a touchline - you may have heard  he's won a few trophies along the way.

As for Benitez: many of the comments here have brought Benitez' name up as a reponse to LFC's season under Dalglish. The point I'm making is that he may not be quite as good as many of you think he is - many United fans were hoping he'd be kept on in 2010. His record, apart from those 3 months at end of 2008-2009, is basically organising a team to make it hard to beat (which is what he did at Valencia also). He has a high player churn rate when it comes to transfers which suggest he's a bad judge of a player prior to working with them.

    ReplyDelete
  54. You're anti Dalglish, and you call yourself a Liverpool fan?
    Get a grip of yourself!

    ReplyDelete
  55. That was Carroll's best game for us. It was Henderson's worst. Downing wasn't at the races and not enough went through Bellamy. Suarez was isolated feeding on less than scraps.

I hope Carroll can play like this every game from now on - he'll be a world beater.

Good to see all the retracted statements of getting rid of AC, patience is a wonderful thing!

    ReplyDelete
  56. Wow, there are some real supporters on this board aren't there? Anyway, instead of blasting KD, try looking at the positives. Carroll played well when he came on, Suarez played better when Carrol came on, in fact the whole team did. The problem existed in the centre of midfield. We had the game Jay Spearing, who, bless his little cottons, is really no more than a Championship player and it showed. The centre of the park is where we failed to get a foothold on the game until Spearing left the field. Everyone who supports the club should look to the future because things can change in football very quickly. Who would have said at the end of the 2009/10 season we would fall from being one of the most feared teams in Europe to struggling to make it to the Europa League? Well, I knew we'd struggle if we lost Alonso and we did..... Ah well, roll on next year and with a few canny additions to the squad, especially in the centre of the park, we can make much more of a fist of it in the league.

    ReplyDelete
  57. How can you say it was Henderson's worst? Every game is his worst. The man is total rubbish. KD deserves to be booted out for the disgusting favouritism he has shown this season with his team selections. Spearing and Henderson! They are Sunday League players and if they were playing in that league they would be nothing special.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Reina is vastly overrated. Barcelona supporters were delighted when he left.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Kenny was certainly a great servant. Reina has never been anything but mediocre.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I think not winning the FA Cup is ultimately a good thing for LFC. With this result, it is easier for FSG to remove KD. I really cannot bear to see KD spending another fortune on unproven mediocre players. I do pity players like SD, AC and JH at times. They may be good professionals with limited abilities but because some jokers broke the bank for them, they became instant target boards when results were not going the right way. Did Downing requested to be moved for 20 mil pounds? It is ultimately the responsibility of the people who deemed those players as suitable and decided or agreed to their price tags. I seriously disagree that these professionals would deliberately play badly the whole season. They must have played their hearts out most of the time despite their limited abilities. So much said, in this case, KD and Comolli must hold hands and accept responsibility of failure to get suitable players for LFC and overpaid for mediocre players. If KD still loves LFC, he should resign as soon as the 2011-2012 season is over, just in case FSG is still clueless about who's the right person as manager for LFC.

    ReplyDelete
  61. The most useful contribution Henderson could make to LFC is to pick up an injury. That is the only way he will not make it into the team because for certain if Liverpool had another big match coming up next week Henderson is the first name KD would pencil in.

    ReplyDelete
  62. The biggest question now is can we trust kenny with a transfer fund. Personally i dont think he should be sacked just yet but will kenny have learnt from the mistakes he has made with poor signs and allowing muppets like spearing get near to our 1st team. Big Big Big summer for liverpool. All those deluded fans who kept on saying support the team and we'll progress. Downing, henderson spearing will come good...ha. All gone quiet and hiding under their blankets!!! FACT - We going to finish worse off in the league and have NO MIDFIELD, BARRING GERRARD!!! TOTAL RESPECT TO CARROLL....WHAT CHARACTER HE SHOWED TODAY AFTER A TOUGH SEASON...NOW HE IS A TRUE LIVERPOOL PLAYER, WORE HIS HEART ON HIS SLEEVE.

Better start swotting up on media law, specifically copyright infringement. Fair use? Hmm, I sincerely hope you don't make a penny from this site, otherwise you're going to be taken to the cleaners. Good luck trying to prove this is just a hobby. We'll be watching and keeping a record of all the stories you rip off to drive your traffic and fund your ad revenue... and don't think simply quoting the source will make up for the obviously commercial nature of your plundering. 69. I am a liverpool fan and i want the best for my club hence the reason why dalglish needs to go..... Dalglish's decisions, excuses and favoritism have been just pitiful and detrimental to our development and u know what in God's name did henderson and downing do that gaurantees them the amount of game time they get??? a lot of you fans need to wake up and take of your rose tinted glasses and see whats going on were worse off were eighth place (did u see the fullham match??) and carling cup win that we scraped up with penalties come on really were horrible.

  70. i understand where your coming from yes it is true the passion is gone but who makes the choice to bring on and play these guys above players like raheem and maxi ya'll keep forgetting real football is not like fifa where you forget to change your team and u have to deal with whose on the pitch the manager is responsible for who gets the call, team morale, tactics, strategy, substitutions (which for dalglish exist in the dying 60/ early 70m mins of the game) u can say i am bitching atm i don't care something needs to be done.

  75. Why didn't KUYT knock the ball and Ivanovic into the net?

    ReplyDelete
  76. I'm with you on that one, Eddie and Anthony. Spearing will never be able to stamp his authority on the game, but I believe was picked ahead of Shelvey purely due to 'big game' experience. God, how we missed Lucas today, because he's the glue that binds it together, he's the water carrier who will do the shitty jobs or pick up a yellow card when needed.
The abuse and criticism of Henderson is pretty disgraceful - discount the pricetag, he's a kid and he's in his first full season with us. I'm not sure why people call it favouritism to continue to believe in someone's ability, but there you go.

    Down, but definitely not out.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Yeah Henderson's useless ass has only been playing one season with us,if you recall Lucas was a useless ass when he first joined us too,but hell we sure miss him since he has been out don't we? Cut the kid some slack he will come good, and on the subject of useless ass what about Reina? Useless!,

    ReplyDelete
  78. Dalglish has the worst Liverpool record in the league since 1954. He may be a fantastic feller, but his record this year certainly doesn't make him bigger than the club.

    ReplyDelete
  79. So kenny could bring Ruddy because he's British & we can competing with west brom, stoke, wigan etc next season.

  80. it's weird how everybody attacks reina even though at least 3 mistakes were made by other players b4 ramirez scored, with reina's small error overshadowed everything for you

    ReplyDelete
  81. why do you slate other supporters huh?? we all want the best for LFC, you are willing to wait and give dalglish god knows how much time so he can drag us down more, you are not concerned about his cr@p tactics and buys, you think what he did is the way forward, fine. Other people just like me burt, mali, septimus think KD is the problem his bad decisions show that he shouldn't be a liverpool manager anymore. How does that make us worse supporters, think about that, b4 you start slating people for no good reason

    ReplyDelete
  82. So, what you're saying is the team OWES you just because you give up stuff to follow them? Get a grip. And you really think Dalglish "made" us lose? Honestly, I despair with some of our new generation of "supporters".
The first Cup Final I saw Liverpool play was in '77. I don't remember feeling anger towards the players or animosity toward the manager. Just a huge feeling of disappointment at the result and also an immense feeling of pride when the team did their consolation lap of honour. That was what sealed the lifelong love  for my team. Nowadays the team HAS to win to seal the bond between fan and team, which is depressing and quite pathetic.
I, too, should have studied for my O levels, but instead went to Belgium for the European Cup Final. That was personal choice. I never for one minute blamed the Club for my poor grades. I was just happy to be able to watch my team.
It annoys me how quickly our end emptied yesterday. Stay, show some pride, and at least give [some] of the boys some appreciation.

Hopefully, in the cold light of day, you'll realise you were angry and needed to spout off. But deep down you know that in a Cup Final sometimes all you CAN do is cross your fingers and hope it's going to be your day.

    Sermon over.

    ReplyDelete
  83. We are competing with them, they are all in PL but we need someone who look's as though they actually give a rat's-ass about performing and not let in soft stupid goal's and if we can keep clean sheet's against these team's we might be in with a shout against the rest!!!!

  92. poor gary, obviously doesn't like to hear the truth. how can you defend a manager who has broken the records for the worst run in the history of a club like liverpool. i am a a utd supporter but i'd be the first to stand up and say liverpool are one of the best clubs in the country  with outstanding supporters...not since kenny took the helm though :-(

  93. Lighten up - no need for name calling. This is the internet :)

  94. Well argued and I agree with most of it. But while making a team hard to beat is a requisite of a good manger its not the only one (e.g. Allardyce has achieved this a couple of times and surely he's not on the same level as Benitez). And the high turnover, no matter that the players were valued under £6m, is destabilising for the squad. Also that description you give of how Benitez' Liverpool played only applied to that 'legendary' last 3 months of the 08-09 season. Earlier that season he was playing too defensively at home to teams like Stoke and that's where the league was lost (dropped points against teams they should have beaten easily like city did this season).

However what Benitez was/is also very good at is setting up a team for a match (what I'd call 'match management') and generally adjusting the team tactically throughout the match - heard he did ok in some european games back in 2005. His problem is getting a squad together and then keeping it together (let's call it 'man management'). Even when he's been successful it's when he's been managing teams put together by the previous manager (Houllier at Liverpool, Cuper at Valencia). His subsequent teams, those consisting of players he's brought together himself, seem to fall short. So I stand by what I originally said about Benitez working his way through a high number of players hoping that he will get a sufficient number of them to 'gel' for long enough to win the league - it didn't work in 2009 and had completely fallen apart by the end of that year. It definitely won't work now that Abu Dhabi have potentially available something like 500 billion (not sure if its dollars/euros/pounds, does it matter? You'd think Abramowich would go back to his yachts now - even he's just like the rest of us when up against this kind of money.)

So while I think Benitez could do better than Dalglish I don't think he's going to lead you to the "promised land". Start over - LFC is financially stable, get someone in like Rodgers or Martinez and maybe they can do what Shankly did in the 1950s, a promising young manager taking a sleeping giant back to the top. At least its an option at LFC. For United, once Ferguson finishes, then things don't look too promising because of the Glazers (imagine 7 years of Gillett and Hicks, and no end in sight either).

  95. No, I don't miss him. I'm used to watching midfielders like Milne, Stevenson, Souness, Case, Kennedy, McDermott, Callaghan, Barnes and, of course, Gerrard. So I don't rate Lucas at all. He can't score goals, can't make goals, can't dribble and can't head the ball. Mind you, he's three times the player Henderson is. Come good? You are living in a fantasy world if you think the useless little jerk will ever come good.
However, you are at least right about Reina. I've never liked him. I live in Barcelona and their supporters were delighted when he left.

  96. I agree mistakes were made. It's just that Reina always seems immune to criticism while so many others get slated. He should have left ages ago - he clearly doesn't give  a toss about the club any more.
Let's not call it a 'small error' - it was absolutely crap goalkeeping!

  97. Perhaps because he hasn't got any ability? God knows what KD sees in the useless little runt - it's certainly not his looks.

  98. Is Stevie G passed it or is it just hes come back after a year and played catch up in terms of fitness throughout the 2nd half of the season, so far i have seen a player a shadow of his former self bar the everton game. I for one am worried because the 2 so called world class players as in Gerrard and Suarez might actually only be one now!!

On a different note Andy Carroll finally turned up after 18 months. I hope this performance is a sign of things to come

He has been poor for three years.  Looks like he has lost a yard of explosive pace.  It is probably time he adjusted his game accordingly because he will no doubt be staying.

  101. Remind me if I am right here but Robbie Savage was the worst footballer in the history of the game & How can he judge anyone - When is own career was a failure - I agree with him up to a certain extent.
