LFC legend tells FSG: Sign this £10m star with 35 goals/assists. Agree...?

Liverpool legend John Aldridge has joined Steve Nicol and Reds Chairman Tom Werner in expressing his admiration for Fulham striker Clint Dempsey, and he's called on Kenny Dalglish to sign the striker this summer.

In his column for the Liverpool Echo a few days ago, Aldo - who scored 63 goals in 104 games during his time at Anfield - argued that the Reds need to bring in 'at least three or four players' this summer, and urged the club to dump players who aren’t good enough 'regardless of what they cost'. On the subject of who Liverpool should bring in this season, Aldo added:

"In terms of players coming in, we certainly need another striker and Clint Dempsey for the price would be a good signing".

During a Q&A session at Craven Cottage a few weeks ago, Jol made it clear that Dempsey will be shipped out if he refuses to sign a new contract, and given his form this season, it seems likely that some bigger clubs will be trying to sign the American.

Liverpool legend Steve Nicol managed 10m-rated Dempsey at New England Revolution, and he recently talked up the possibility of a move to one of the Premier League's big clubs:

"If you look at Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal, the way they play would suit him [Dempsey] down to the ground, and for me, there's no reason why any one of those teams shouldn't be looking at him.

With 28 goals and 7 assists in all competitions for (for Fulham and the USA), Dempsey's record this season is very impressive, and given his experience in the Premier League, I'm sure he could replicate that form at Liverpool.

  1. His stats are amazing but my only concern with him is that he doesn't turn out to be another Stewart Downing.

  2. rather have luuk de jong

  3. I think for the right price he would be a good start to the rebuilding

  4. Downing is totally useless

  5. 20 MILLION KENNY

    ReplyDelete
  6. Dempsey gives you goals every season, so yes why not!!!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Dempsey at 10M  ( 28 goals and 7 assists) and Demba Ba at 7M ( 16 EPL goals) and sell Downing for 12 M.
That would be 41 goals compared to our whole team who scored 47 goals in EPL .

Even if they scored half of that next season, that is 20 goals for 20 million compared to our zero goals and zero assists for  our 20M Downing .

  8. who'd pay 12mil for downing after the season he has had?

    ReplyDelete
  9. de jong, sissokho , ramirez , hoillwt/moses are the reasonable signings i'd make ......oh yeah valencia's manager/martinez to kick out the king who i still think shud be involved in coaching. PROBLEM SOLVED LADS. AGREE?

  10. We will accept Post dated cheques ):

  11. I'd rather we went for his team-mate Moussa Dembele.
He's one of the reasons Dempsey plays so well.
Put Moussa behind our strikers and no doubt we'd improve.

  12. Yes, great! Lets start by signing a 29 year old. Just what we want for the 'future'.

    ReplyDelete
  13. 28+16 = 44 goals.

I suppose it is a good sign that they scored so many that you lost count! :)

    ReplyDelete
  14. We've waited too long to buy him. Could have been a good signing when we were first linked with him a few years back. It just isn't worth paying £10mil for a 29 year old. As usual, we've waited until a player is at his most hyped, most expensive and just moving past the best years of his career (Robbie Keane anyone?).

I'd also prefer Dembele, but he'd have to improve his end product. Quality footballer though.

  15. Touché mate . I indeed lost count after 11 goals - Suarez's tally )):

  16. we wont have a future unless we start turning out wins. we need a instant goalscorer as well as youth for the future, i'd also grab yakubu.

    ReplyDelete
  17. i would take yakubu, not dempsey. I never thought of him as a top goalscorer, whereas yaakubu has been a menace at every single game i have seen him play.
also, your argument is invalid since we allegedly have 2 instant goalscorers which we have paid over 50m for.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Yakubu.....are you havin a laugh....next you'll be saying u would be happy seeing Berbatov join....

    ReplyDelete
  19. Who would buy Downing for 5m never mind 12....GET REAL....

    ReplyDelete
  20. Unai Emery gone to Spartak Moscow....

    ReplyDelete
  21. hes not bad, but dont know he looked average over the years, now he shined this season doesnt mean he became class, but 10m. isnt too much for him i mean we paid a lot for many useless players we got but im afraid we have enough of average players in our squad, if he plays at lfc like he did at fulham then hell yes get him, but players always fail when they come to liverpool, dont know why, the majority of them do.

Dempsey at 10 mil is a steal.i admire him.a very awesome player.please sign him,he will be great with either suarez or carrol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  23. side ways move, should only go to a team playing champions league, Liverpool are proven to spend poorly and coach badly. Like tottenham 5 years ago.

    ReplyDelete
  24. No matter if it is a yes or no - I do not like to vote with a H... in front of it.

    ReplyDelete
  25. AGREE WITH YOU! This is a knee-jerk re-action.

    ReplyDelete
  26. This is who we need...IMO......

Left Back (can also play left wing) - Jeremy Matthieu - would provide Enrique with some welcome competition and IMO is better....

Def CM / Anchor - Lassana Diarra (RM) or Javi Garcia (Benfica)

Winger - Gaitian (Benfica) or Adam Johnson.....or both!

Striker -  Lavezzi....can see a great partnership with Suarez being formed.

    ReplyDelete
  27. One thing i think we would get from signing Dempsey is a player who would be totally committed to the cause...prem proven and in form....

His age is a concern but i think we would get our moneys worth, how we would incorporate him in the side though is another matter altogether.......

    ReplyDelete
  28. Or Lewandowski (Striker - Dortmund)....

    ReplyDelete
  29. Lavezzi is not a goal scorer. The most he scored in a league season is 9 goals . He would cost over 23M .

    ReplyDelete
  30. That is a very news to hear. FSG needs to act fast before all other good available managers being snapped up. What about Jurgen Klopp?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Although I would love to see the quick fix such as adding another striker and shoring up the midfield, these kink of changes would only suffice for the short-term.  I don't think it is about getting one player here or there to give the team the fix that it really needs for sustained improvement.  Rather you need competition at all positions in order to drive the level of play up, and keep players motivated to give their best each week.  I am hopeful that this is the message from FSG, get LFC back to the year in year out contender that it was.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Exactly ! Our "It worked for them it will work for us attitude" is not getting us nowhere.

Liverpool is getting players when they are on form and paying inflated prices, Downing not worth more than 12, Carroll, 25 if you are being generous.

Liverpool needs some vision, his form doesn't make him great, look at Jelavic for example, in Everton he is great but if he signed for LFC it I imagine it would be another Jovanovic.

Club neeeds to make use of the quality in the team which is better then 8 place finish, and only spend on young players in the CL-less seasons .

    ReplyDelete
  33. Screw dempsey, hes small time, another flavour of the month just because hes had one good season. Boo!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Why not bring djibril cisse back, another quality player poorly managed by benitez.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I agree. We may end up over paying for him only to find him needing 1 season to adapt and back to square one. We need a manager with an eye for players who can perform at a  high level once here.

We can bring in the best strikers in the world but if the player gets no support from the midfielders or wide players like Downing, then he ain't gonna score. Even if you bring in Papisse, he will not do well.

Now is the time for the manager to re-look at the team and system of play and decide what kind of players to dispose or hire to get back into Champs league next season. Don't need to bring in players just basing on stats.

    ReplyDelete
  36. People here seem to be waking up and realising that we just can't go for the likes of Cavani, Aguero, Benzema, Higuain, Lavezzi etc. We need to consolidate, maybe sign a couple of young guns, but sign a few cheaper, older players for the short term. Players like Dempsey, Yakubu, Dembele etc who have been consistently good in the EPL, who will, if nothing more, give players like Hendo, Downing, Adam, Carroll and Suarez some competition for a spot and give them more drive to impress. Even Keita (provided he comes cheap) would be awesome, he's a beast at Barca, but we would need to accept that he is an old player and would be a 2 year MAX signing

    ReplyDelete
  37. You are kidding, right? He is almost as much of a disgrace as Barton!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Keep in mind, Dempsey is a midfielder for Fulham.  When you consider his goal scoring record in light of that fact, it becomes more impressive.

    ReplyDelete
  39. To all the liverpool supporters saying that Dempsey would not be a good signing... He will not sign with you. He will only leave for champions league football, he's said thats what he wants. His ambitions are a bit higher than liverpool. And cmon. Another stewart downing.  When did he bang in that many goals in a season? They are different players, awful comparison. And comparing him to yakubu is stupid as well. He's a left midfielder and has only played striker 5 or 6 times this season. He'll play for tottenham or arsenal next year. A cool stat i read today: Only RVP has had a hand (by either scoring or setting up) a higher percentage of his teams goals this season.

  40. Ba has been crap since Cisse came, I have heard on the grapevine that Dempsey may go to Everton as close friend of Tim Howard and Landon Donovan

    ReplyDelete
  41. I hate to say it but I dont think he will, he will join Everton due to the Americans in the team persuading him as Cahill's replacement.
Yakubu will score goals if your happy for someone to stand there like a lump of lard for 90 minutes. Mind you the 'legend' Aldridge only ever touched the ball to score.

    ReplyDelete
  42. No!!! We will not sign a 29 year old striker. Suarez and Carroll will be the pairing next season we need a young striker like De Jong to come in and challenge them, Dempsey is not going to sign for LFC, simple.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Like it or not these r the players will b able to attract. No world class player would want to come to Lfc. No CHL and KD as mngr. just goes to show how far we have fallen. Few years ago we'd b linked with players like Alves, Silva, Villa now Dempsey, D Bent and whoever else.

    ReplyDelete
  44. So we need a striker and a wide player for the first XI. Two positions we have bought for in the last 18 months....

    ReplyDelete
  45. Signed a contract in January (yes, yes, contracts don't mean anything and all that). Can see why he would stay there, with Bundesliga on the up, Dortmund's exciting team starting to mature, etc. Kagawa is on his way out but they are bringing back the talented Reus.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Ba has been on the left wing a lot since Cisse has come in, in a 4-3-3/4-2-3-1. Even public comments by Ba himself and Pardew will attest to the fact that he has been playing on the left wing. He has done a ok job for the team out on the wing.

    ReplyDelete
  47. He is English, some English club will be at least as almost as stupid as us.

    ReplyDelete
  48. One of the most frustrating parts of Liverpools game for the past couple of seasons has been the fact that Suarez, Kuyt, Gerrard, Carroll, Johnson, Shelvey, Spearing etc are all capable of getting great balls into the box... but there's never anyone there to take advantage of them. We simply dont have a classic goal-hanging striker to finish these great moves we seem capable of creating. Dempsey has shown time and time again that he is EXACTLY that type of player.  He reads the game incredibly well and knows instinctively where to get to as a move starts to build. So many of his goals have been knocked in from under 10 yards as he ghosts into the right position, totally unmarked.  I think he would be the perfect solution to a lot of our problems and with the American connection, there must be some strings that can be pulled.  As for this 'building for the future' mentality... success is self-perpetuating. Start winning games, trophies, getting back into the top four where we know we belong and THEN great players will be queueing up to join us, but as things stand, we'd be lucky to attract someone as good as Dempsey and can only hope we get lucky with a few good signings this summer.

    ReplyDelete
  49. dempsy is a squad player for a top six team at best.

    ReplyDelete
  50. That is the right thinking, mate! Why are perfectly good goall scorers suddenly unable to score for LFC, because we lack creative midfielders like Dembele. Get Dembele, Elm and sign the Wigan DM on free and bring Luuk de Jong and we have a team that can compete!

    ReplyDelete
  51. I read 35goals/assists .... somebody please tell the blogger that this is NOT how you present offensive stats. I can only deduce that the blogger has either never played sports before or is perhaps an armchair quarterback.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I like Dempsey, but wonder how long he has left to justify any kind of price tag. One thing is for sure, unlike most other industries, if he was not American, he would have gone to a big club already.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Totally agree with you. It is down to the right deployment of players and tactics.

    ReplyDelete
  54. he wont go to everton for the same reason. he wants champions league. why would he leave london where his family is happy to go up to liverpool for either side to continue not being able to play in the CL. He feels, as do I, that it would be a shame for him to never have had the chance to play on europes biggest stage.  He would stay at Fulham if not offered that chance.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Dempsey is not a striker lol. Only deployed there due to injury. He scored almost all of his goals this year from midfield. You're right though, he would never go to liverpool. He wants to play in the Champions League. If not offered that he will stay at Fulham.

    ReplyDelete
  56. great point. success breeds more success. if he came to liverpool he might only be around 4 years but if him and other can help improve the results then the young stars of the future will see LFC as a great place to start or continue a world class career

    ReplyDelete
  57. I agree with you that Moussa is incredible. I love watching him play, he's so good on the ball. However after watching every Fulham match this season its clear that Clint has created almost every opportunity for Fulham and has more assists than anyone else on the team including dembele.(which is incredible considering they have a 20+ goal scorer to pass to and he cannot assist himself lol) He's either assisted or scored a higher percentage of his teams goals than every last player in the prem save RVP. What i'm trying to get at is this. If you can have two players who can provide that final ball and play creatively through the midfield, wouldn't you rather take the man who has created a bit more and also score prolifically. He's done all this with danny murphy pulling the strings and opposing defenses all focusing on stopping him. Imagine what he could do with a variety of attacking weapons.

    ReplyDelete
  58. lol. downing has been probably the biggest dissapointment i've seen in a long long time.

    ReplyDelete
  59. really? There is doubt in his ability to come in and play needing a full season to adapt? or that he wont produce for liverpool? or that he had players feed him the ball and that is why he scored so much? or that he cant make his own shot?

Not only does he lead his team in goals for a mid table team (really take a look at that, a MID TABLE TEAM)  that does not have the talent of a top 4 club to the point that more than 40% of goals on the team are his, he also has 7 assists... Think about that for a second, if in a game fulham scores, there is an almost 43% chance that it will be clint dempsey and when he doesnt score, there is a 25% chance that he will assist the goal scorer. If he leaves the club, 68% of the team goal scoring production is gone. They probably relegate if they dont find another clint or increase production some way. That is more production for a team than rvp was for arsenal. And that is for the premier league season alone, I haven't even acounted for all competitions fulham played. But of course, he isnt good enough for a team like liverpool. lulz

Id argue he is good enough for any team in the premier league and get significant playing time and i'd win. Oh and Internationally? well for the first time in the history of usa beat italy by a, thats right, a clint dempsey goal...

    ReplyDelete
  60. oh and one last thing,  dempsey has had this kind of production, for a long time now, except difference is that he has IMPROVED every season and he has not hit a ceiling. And because the way he plays (he does not use speed or high amounts athleticism) he won't stop improving and peak at prob his mid 30s

    ReplyDelete
  61. Anyone remember McAllister? he was old and brilliant :)
