The end is nigh: John W. Henry in Kenny Dalglish handshake snub...

In a moment of supreme irony, Liverpool principal owner John W. Henry neglected to shake Kenny Dalglish's hand during the post-match medal presentation at Wembley on Saturday.

As is customary in the FA Cup Final, the losers receive their consolation medals prior to the presentation of the cup.

On Saturday, Liverpool's players trudged up to the Royal Box to receive their losers medals, and as you can see below, Henry shook Steven Gerrard's hand as he went by:

Moments later, Dalglish walked by, and stone-faced Henry seemed to ignore the Liverpool manager, and failed to offer his hand:

The Liverpool Daily Post carried the same picture and made direct reference to the incident in their caption, which stated: "John Henry and Kenny Dalglish pass each other".

It's pretty poor form for Liverpool's owner to refuse to shake the manager's hand, even though I can understand his disappointment with the final defeat, and the overall poor season.

Earlier in the week, Henry revealed his frustration with Liverpool's profligacy in the transfer market, and after yesterday's handshake snub, things are not looking good for Dalglish.

  1. We would if we saw hope -- but KD is clearly not the right man... nor his back team staff (1 of whom was defensive coach for West Ham when they went down)!!! I was willing to be patient with Rafa as those of us that could see the bigger picture could see what he had done and what was going on behind the scenes. But are we really going to have a 5 year plan with a 61 year old in charge at the start???  He keeps playing his signings over better players hoping they have a decent game and that will validate them!! no ideas of tactics...

  2. Erm, 27 year old Downing who anyone who had ever seen him play before hand would have said he's not good enough, same with Adam. You don't spend £35m on potential - you spend that kind of money on a finished article. Look at players like Mata, Jelavic, Silva -- they hit the ground running AS DID RONALDO AT UNITED!! They came from different leagues/countries so that is not a good excuse...

  3. It's clear to me Dede knows sweet FA about football and is just another excuse making yes-man type of fan. End of the day we are below teams that spent much less than us - Fulham/Everton/Newcastle - and the buck stops with KD. There has been no progression and the league is the true test of where a team is.

  4. Effin hate this comparison with Lucas. Lucas cost £6m and had already been succesful. Brazil U20 captain, took Gremio to the final of the Copa L. and youngest ever winner of the 'Golden Ball'. He came to a new league/language/country/position but it was clear he had talent -- most who watched him and reserve games were patient and knew he would come good -- even if he didn't it would have been a £6m flop that we prob could have recouped our money on -- Henderson will never be worth £16m, neither Carroll at £35m but think they will come good -- However Downing has ALWAYS been 1 dimensional -- same as Adam - and they are not young -- 27, 25.
With Lucas, we were fighting with other top teams for his signature as people could see this lad's talent -- no one was fighting with us over Carroll, Henderson, Downing yet we still paid over the top

  5. for the people that think were gonna bring rafa back yous are idiots :L not a chance will we bring him back, it will be villas boas or somebody young as they stated thats the kind of manager they wanted but they went with the fans choice in kenny!

  6. Here goes no nothing Dave insulting others. I don't think Rafa will come back but he would be better than KD YOU MUG!!! Move heaven and earth for Jurgen Klopp - that's my view!!

  7. If you take into account the sale of Rafa players you'll see his nett spend is close to £0. He was not allowed to sign first choices but who are these mediocre players... oh right the ones signed at mediocre prices.... Reina, Agger, Skrtel, Lucas - £6m or Torres at £20m or Masch at £18m or maybe Alonso at £10m.... Aquilani flopped but probably would have been picked by Rafa - he was our best player pre season. Robbie Keane is the only one he really lost money on and even that was 5m-8m!! If a player wasn't good enough Rafa got rid and we made close to their purchase price. and he spent £200m gross in 6 years... Kenny had £120m in one summer!!!

  8. Jesus christ no. Lambert, Brendan Rodgers are good at their clubs but need more time -- Owen Coyle was being linked by the Media to Arsenal last year and some fans started believing that -- now in his 2nd year at Bolton and he'll probably go down. Same with Mcleish at Brum -- first year the media said he should replace Rafa - 2nd year down he went. Wish people would stop listening to the media and judge a team over time and playing style and what kind of players the manager could attract. Jurgen Klopp would be a good manager for us. But Rafa's success at Valencia was built despite being outspent by Barca and Real - and that could be pivotol for us coming up against Chelsea and Man City.

  9. Sacked from Newcastle in 1998 -- that was his loast job... The league and landscape of football has changed so much since KD was last successful (at Blackburn)

  12. Ferguson did it in the 1980s, this is a whole new different era, so different circumstances, etc.

People keep bringing him up as some sort of example but that was over 20 years ago! surely there must be much more recent examples, non?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Wouldn't mind if ti was someone like Jurgen Klopp. Rafa could still be a good manager for us and I would love to see him back but can't see FSG doing that.

  14. didn't we come second without Pako? Not sure but would be great if someone could clarify that for me. Rafa just needed a better board than he worked for. Purslow handed Hodgson a sheet with players who should be sold and one of them was Lucas!!! At Inter he was promised money but it didn't arrive as the Chairman said they had won everything last year so no improvement was needed. The players weren't motivated and it was still acknowledged that they played a better brand of football than most rivals that year.

  15. still better than 9th and the Carling Cup

  16. Jamie, I have one question for you, When will you ever be positive about our club? Rafa Benitez, Spirit Of Shankly, Kenny Dalglish, players we should have signed all you've done is have a go and let's not forget you stood up for Hicks and Gillett.

    ReplyDelete
  17. So we've been unlucky and should get rid of the crap -- i.e - his signings? Have you ever heard 'fortune favours the brave'? Unlucky is just a very very poor excuse losers make!!

    ReplyDelete
  18. You must be on crack.
You seem to forget to mention that it motivated Alonso into his best season for us - we made £20m profit on a player that yes, Rafa bought!! I would have loved him at the club but Rafa was told he had to sell before he could buy and thought not that Barry was better but that he could sell Alonso for 30, buy Barry for 12 and have more money left over for other positions!!

Rafa played the worst football ever seen?? hmm let me think, beating Real 4-0 or losing to wigan, WBA, Fulham.... KD plays kick and rush football... we are so predictable and have been outscored by a relegated BLACKBURN...

  19. You're an idiot

    ReplyDelete
  20. I would say that is indicative of a modern fan, and yet again you have missed the blindingly obvious point I was making. I am an 'old school' fan, who, since the 70's has supported players in a red shirt on the field of play. It doesn't mean I can't reflect on his performance after the game. As it is difficult for you, I will explain. 'The Liverpool Way' is a term coined years ago in respect to learning how the team is constructed and plays on the field, not as you wrongly deduced, how fans treat their players. If you need any more teaching about a club youu purport to understand, just ask.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Kick and rush is not good football... we play long ball to the wings and hit in hopeful crosses. The only time we play clever football is when Maxi, Suarez and Kuyt link up. Next year two of them probably won't be here. You are deluded if you think 40-odd goals is great football.
What do I expect after one season and £120m spent? not our worst season in living memory!!
Your last paragraph is spoken like a true loser who would be happy with mid-table finishes forever... pathetic!
We support Liverpool not Kenny FC. Huge respect for the man but he's out of his depth. He should be moved in the summer into an Ambassador role because if he doesn't and the first half of next season is poor than they will have no option but to sack him -- and no one wants to see that...

    ReplyDelete
  22. Also when people add fact to the end of a sentence it doesn't make it a fact - it's still an opinion and reinforces my opinion of you as an idiot.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Adam is too slow and is no more than a poor man's Gerrard. He has been atrocious for most of the season.

    ReplyDelete
  24. 9th after £120m spent... who cares really about the Carling Cup... Yes it was nice to win but Birmingham won it last year and went down... Is that a good season? KD is out of touch and so are you.

  25. I have been positive about LFC many many times, and the article archive proves that. You just don't understand the point of this site. The goal of this site is to be critical of LFC and football in general; that has always been the stated goal, and if you come here, you should expect critiques of the club. If you don't like that approach, don't come here.

I support LFC, not any individual, and everything I write comes from the viewpoint of 'How does this affect the club? Is this behaviour in line with the 'Liverpool Way' of doing things (as I perceive it); does this individual's conduct place LFC in a negative light etc.

All the criticism I've offered of Benitez. Dalglish, SOS etc has been totally valid; fans just can't handle the fact that there are people out there with a different view of what supporting a football club is all about.

I vociferously criticised Hicks and Gillett on many occasions too, but I also defended them against ignorant, tribalist bile vomited out by so-called fans, just as I defend any LFC player/manager who's subjected to what I perceive to be unfair abuse. It's called being fair, and if you can't handle that, then that's not really my problem.

  28. So this has turned into a Rafa v KD forum.
Ok can we all say if we are to move forward, if KD is removed and Rafa does NOT come back - who would everyone want in charge?I like the mentions of Klopp, Unai Emery or AVB - possibly Bielsa?

  29. The transfer market was a wee bit different when rafa brought all these players compared to now don't you think? Pretty silly comparison don't you think?

  32. Eh? The entry to those two cups in question were down to the wonderful hard work of the previous manager. All Rafa had to do was win 1 tie against a dodgy Roma side with his CL-winning Inter for the cup that is basically the Italian version of the Community Shield (a.k.a pre-season warm up cup) and two games against two obscure sides for the Club World Cup.

In terms of winning those two cups (i.e. not taking into account how the entry in those two cups came about, ergo, so just talking about the games in those two cups Rafa was in charge of), it was no harder than winning the Carling Cup.

Inter's league position was hardly anything to boast about either, by the time Rafa left, considering he was taking over the top team in Italy at the time as well as CL champions.  Certainly in a far better state than this club has ever been in the last two decades.
Its one thing wanting Rafa back but its another thing sensationalizing everything he has done in such a rose-tinted manner.

    Puh-leez.

  34. Never talk about Kenny Dalglish like that after everything he has done for this club.

    You are an absolute disgrace.

    ReplyDelete
  35. All I hope time is up for KD. He is a must-go! Jurgen Klopp is a great manager. He over-achieved in managing Dortmund, Bundesliga Champion for two consecutive seasons. Unai Emery is another excellent manager. Valencia highly over-achieved practically every season during his stint as the manager. I don't know how he does it season after season. Valencia still managed to qualify for Champions League regularly despite the club's financial woes and being a selling club.

  36. JK, I am all for people having an open forum to voice their opinions, even if they are, in my opinion, delluded. However, if this is still an LFC forum, run by supporters of LFC, then I think it is a disgrace that those so-called supporters feel free to be so dissrespectfull to one of our greatest servants. Regardless of how you feel about this season, some of us know what this man has done for us and will never never forget. And your wrong Mali341, he will be missed. I actually enjoyed wining a trophy and being in anotehr cup final for a change. Amazing what passes for a football suporter nowadays!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Not photoshopped. Mr. Henry is in the front row of the Royal box with everyone else being in the rows behind him. Thats why he would seem "out of proportion". This photo couldn't be more true and gives the fans assurance that it just isn't us who are fed up. I agree with your comment about Dalglish's contribution to Liverpool but his success's ended as soon as he hung his boots up (minus what he has done with the academy).

    ReplyDelete
  38. @ Marc - you're so in denial that you actually believe the photo is doctored?! Are you saying that the Liverpool Echo photoshopped the image, because that's where it came from.

    The LFC conspiracy continues...

    ReplyDelete
  39. MCM - Dalglish deserves criticism, irrespective of what he's achieved for the club. That criticism should not be personal, and as regular readers know, I am against personal attacks on players/management. If people want to have the opinion that Dalglish will not be missed when he leaves then so be it; you may not agree, but others do. The criticism KD is receiving has nothing to do with what he did 25 years ago; his legacy will always remain intact, but that was then, and this is now, and there's no room for sentiment, and I'm sure Dalglish would agree with that himself.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I wish people on here would stup using "deluded" as a response to someone voicing an opinion. That is one of the beauties of football, it divides opinion...

My opinion is that Roberto Martinez should be lined up as Kenny's replacement for the end of NEXT SEASON...but only IF THINGS DON'T IMPROVE...my idea of improvement will be getting "close" to CL qualification...as let's face it, every seaon that goes by without action on the new stadium / Anfield Redevelopment sees us continuing to fall further and further behind the teams that SHOULD be chasing us...had Moores & Parry then H&G not F**KED THINGS UP...

We all need to take a reality check, read & heed Purslow's words (1 day away from administration) and understand just how bad things COULD HAVE BEEN....

Kenny & FSG are laying foundations, to rip that up and start again would be ludicrous....

We're a goalscorer short, THATS ALL.....every stat pointed to on here & other threads WOULD HAVE improved had we been able to finish moves off....so hope and pray for a decent acquisition and get behind Kenny & the team...!!!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Everyone here seems to be missing the point of the actual article@Dan  John W Henry probably didn't shake Kenny's hand (and looked so thoroughly hacked off) because at about that very same moment the Boston Red Sox, who remain his first priority, had just given up eight runs in the second inning against a very poor Oakland A's team.  And if you doubt, follow him on Twitter.

Having followed Henry and his team of owners since they purchased the Red Sox in 2003/4, they are highly unlikely to get rid of Kenny anytime soon.  They are extremely loyal to their employees, and will only move if they feel that he has lost the support of the dressing room, or is not moving the club forwards.  The departure of Comolli was far more significant, as that indicates they are unhappy with the front-office; the first guy out of the door at Boston after a very disappointing 2011 season was Comolli's equivalent Theo Epstein, who they practically offered to pay for his plane ticket to Chicago (where he's now General Manager of the Cubs); as for the Manager, Terry Francona, it was only when senior players came out and said they had lost faith in him that he was let go.

Kenny will be given some transfer money this Summer, if by the January transfer window he's shown no marked signs of getting us into CL football they will then reconsider, but, unless he decides to walk, he won't go before then.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Agree about the end of next season but you have to be careful appointing untried managers from small clubs, the step up is huge. Surely we need a CV full of trophies at least?

Totally agree that we are in desperate need of a goalscorer and not much else, maybe a right-winger. The set-up is there and the finance too from FSG, KENNY IS IN HIS FIRST FULL SEASON, did people expect him to get top 4 straight away????, If they did on what basis???

    ReplyDelete
  43. Sacking managers costs lots of money, Hodgson 8.4m just one example. How much do we want to be spending sacking KK and the backroom staff?, bringing in another manager and backroom staff. Rather than give KK the time he needs, just sack him and turn the club upside-down again?.

On what basis should we be in the Champions League, were we last season?, did we win a trophy last season?, now at least we are in European football again. These players needed a season together to gel, they didn't gel well enough but that happens.

Look at Lucas!, how many slated him on here?, now he is fantastic but many wanted him out of the club. Football clubs take time to build a squad and winning mentality, you can't buy that, at any price. You need bad days to make the players harder mentally, this will happen.

If you start sacking managers you end up with no stability or direction, going from one crisis to another. One plan ripped-up for another 3 year plan, then another and another, at what cost to the club????. Stability is everything and without it we are doomed, Is that what people want???

    ReplyDelete
  44. Right, I'll take your last post as a 'heat of passion' rant as you are, like the rest of us, gutted about Saturday's game. I'd also like to point out that there are 28 other readers/posters on this site who agree with what I said as opposed to the 3 who agree with the above drivel.

Please, Benitez HAD to sell Alonso because due to the changing euro/pound relationship, and to changes in GB taxation, coupled with a huge Real Madrid offer, Alonso would make a heck of a lot more money in Madrid, after all the smoke cleared (taxes, exchange rates, etc).
Alonso submitted a transfer form !! Benitez brought Alonso to Liverpool and made him into a much better player - the same achievement with Mascherano and Torres, for example
    Bring Benitez back !!!

  51. I think he has been, for the most part, tactically sound but, as I have stated on numerous occasions on here, we've lacked a natural goal scorer.
I did want Kenny back, I was and still am sure that he can pull us up the league.

I don't like what's been printed about him, I have too much respect for what he has done for the club and it's fans  to sit by idly and read what is written.

he's only there cause he's a fellow scot and kenny had some warped romantic notion that he could be the next jan molby. he's certainly fat enough, but the comparisons end there. id like to see AT LEAST he and downing be used to boost this summers kitty. surely 15m there total..only a 13m loss, but still, better one decent player than him and downing adding f all. adam would be bad enough in the europa, let alone the CL if we ever got there. he's a liability, giving away possession and fouling far too often.
if kenny doesn't get the sack now, adam will see to that mid way through next season.
id rather have henderson in cm along side lucas than adam, and thats saying something.

    ReplyDelete
  73. first of all we lost our soul purpose as Shankly and paisley said the league is our bread and butter. Is should more important than any european competion and domestic cups. It's time to get our priority right we need  a manager who has the same ambition and don't think there is anybody as good as King kenny at this time who will bring us this give kenny time you will see.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Its the start its better the players feel the win of a trophy not like being second all the time.

    ReplyDelete
  75. My goodness, there are more than two managers in the world, Rafa or Kenny, Kenny or Rafa. Don't see a load of clubs in the world lining up to appoint either, to be honest, so why should we not choose someone else?

As for the old chestnut, 'we won the Champions League with Houlliers team', so what, then Houllier should have won it, shouldn't he? And, not to mention, Rafa got to another final. Either way, his football at the end was rubbish and he should not come back. No more backward steps.

    ReplyDelete
  76. What, so if we come 8th next season you suggest we keep Kenny?

For fear of calling anyone deluded and knowing that football divides opinion, I'd like to know what you consider constitutes improvement so that, when we trail Everton again, people don't come out with their own definition of improvement and then the debate about whether we should move on or not goes on all over again.

Carling Cup should be out of the equation next year, as should all the other cups. League position, no lower than 5th and no more than 25 points behind the champions should be expected next season.

We are more than a striker short. We are also a playmaker short. Does LFC not believe in the Mata, Modric, Silva type of players? And what happens when Gerrard really starts creaking? You don't seem to have taken into account that while some things improve in our squad, other things go backwards. And why shouldn't Fulham, Swansea, Norwich, WBA, Sunderland and Everton all improve next year also. Anyone who says that we are 'laying foundations' seems to forget that so is everyone else. What happens when Swansea improvement, which is already faster than ours, gains momentum?

Agree about Martinez, by the way, think he could do a good job. Still think that a proven manager like O'Neill would do the job. Never fails to meet expectation, wherever he goes, proved at Celtic that he was a far superior manager to Kenny.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Does anyone still need reminding that by the time it was Rafas last season the borrowers had stripped most of the team which forced him to fill the squad with average players who couldn't play as well?

Also, dows anyone need reminding that he was in a constant battle to save what was left of the team with the snake purslow who fed lies to the media to tarnish Rafa so he could sack him?

I defy you or anyone to do their job well under those circumstances.

    Think before you criticise!
