Will FSG *sack* Kenny Dalglish? Alan Hansen gives his view...

After the Anfield cull yesterday, which saw Damien Comolli and Peter Bruckner sacked by FSG, Liverpool Chairman Tom Werner insisted that Kenny Dalglish's job was safe. In the past, the 'dreaded vote of confidence' has been a precursor to many a managerial change, but club legend Alan Hansen is adamant that Dalglish's job is, in fact, safe for the foreseeable future.

Speaking to the BBC ahead of tomorrow's FA Cup semi-final with Everton, Hansen - who reiterated that he is a 'great admirer' of Dalglish - argued:

"I do not buy into the suggestion that Kenny Dalglish's position is under scrutiny. He is not going to walk away and the owners are not going to sack him".

Hansen is often accused of giving his former colleague an easy ride, and that's certainly been true this season. However, he admitted that it was 'stupid' to ignore the reality of Liverpool's under-performance in the league:

"To suggest the league form has been anything other than very disappointing since the turn of the year is stupid. Liverpool should always be aiming for the title or to be in the Champions League and Dalglish will be as disappointed as anyone at the way the Premier League season has gone".

Liverpool's stated goal at the start of the season was to finish in the top four; that isn't going to happen but Dalglish has constantly rubbed salt in that wound by over-emphasising the importance of the Carling Cup, a meaningless trophy that in no way makes up for Premier League failure.

The FA Cup, on the other hand, *is* an important trophy, and it would be fantastic if Liverpool could go on and win the competition. Hansen believes an FA Cup win would buy Dalglish time, but he warns that failure to progress against Everton tomorrow would inevitably lead to mass criticism:

"If Dalglish claims a second trophy, the critics will have nowhere to go. If Liverpool don't win, the critics will have everywhere to go, of course"

Even if we somehow manage to win the FA Cup, I don't see how this season's failings can be justified. The league - not five-match trophy runs - is where teams are assessed on class and quality.

He's only been in charge for one full season. If he wins another cup no one with a brain could deny he deserves another year to get the league form sorted out.

I'd prefer cups this season than 'celebrating' 3rd or 4th like Arsenal.

Liverpool entered 3 competions this season and if they do lift the FA cup would have won 2 from 3. Arsenal, Man City both entered FOUR competions and will end the season with nothing. Add Chelsea and Spurs to that if Liverpool do win.

Now say that is a bad season.

HawkEye said...

At no time at the start, or shortly thereafter, of this season has Liverpool Management mentioned that winning either the Carling cup of FA cup were objectives to meet for the year. That's how relevant they were, until of course they knew they couldn't meet the primary objective; fourth palce PL. LMAO. MAn U wins PL and we're gonna flash Carling Cup and MAYBE an FA cup. Give me a break.

BARON MARSDEN said...

NEXT YEAR IS OUR YEAR.

So if we win the FA Cup everything is well and good then. Critics have nowhere to go. Oh really. I would have liked to c if his comments would have been different if somebody else was a mngr. I would also like to know why he's so sure that KD job is safe. By the time the season is finished we could b bottom half of the table. If thats the case would his job still b safe.

HawkEye said...

I guess then if KK came out at the start of the season and said "You know what, we don't care where we finish in PL because we're aiming for Carling and FA Cups" You would have been overjoyed. Right? Yeah right!

Allenvanwyk said...

Hansen is right in that Dalglish is unlikely to be sacked.Nothing to say he won't be bunted upstairs tho

BARON MARSDEN said...

YES THATS TRUE, FA CUP AND CARLING CUP ARE GOOD ENOUGH.  . CARLING CUP IS GOOD ENOUGH ON ITS OWN FOR THIS SEASON. 27 TIMES WEVE HIT THE POST/BAR THIS YEAR. WEVE MISSED A LOT OF PENALTIES, WEVE HAD MANY PENALTIES TURNED DOWN THAT HAVE BEEN STONE WALL PENALTIES, WEVE HAD LUCAS OUT ALL SEASON, WE LOST SUAREZ FOR 8 GAMES AFTER BEING WRONGLY ACCUSED OF RACISM, I THINK WEVE BEEN A LITTLE UNLUCKY TO BE HONEST. WE NEED A LITTLE MORE CLASS IN THE SUMMER. BUT I DONT THING WE ARE FAR FROM BEING A GOOD SIDE AGAIN. DALGLISH 1 YEAR 1 CUP. NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT. DALGLISH 1 YEAR 2 CUPS. . . EXCELLENT. .

Spaniard said...

we will NOT win the FA cup tho, so no worries there

This year we get the double of FA and Carling. Next week we try to win the BPL cup and Europa Cup and the year after that we aim the Treble of BPL , UCL and FA.

j75j said...

Yes, lets forget about winning trophies like we have for the last 6 years! We need to be competing in both but winning trophies are what make clubs great not just finishing in the top 4.

Adrian said...

Who said he was happy with the league form but winning trophys is what its all about

Tornike Khomeriki said...

Tom Werner, on 12 August 2011: "I know
John has said we're going to be top four and Kenny [Dalglish] says well
why can't we win. But we just want to move forward – we want to be
better this year than last year and just keep going on the right track." (http://bit.ly/Il93Bl) This is perfect illustration on Dalglish's delusional attitude to the work he needs to be doing at the club.

Adrian said...

Why don,t you support man u then

Spaniard said...

"27 times we've hit the post/bar this year" - this actually means that 27 attempts at goal have been OFF TARGET, i repeat OFF TARGET - you do realise that, don't you? A sad indictment of the utter dross brought by the hapless KD (he admitted yesterday that it was he, not Commolli that had final say)

"We've missed a lot of penalties" - again, poor finsihing/off target/crap players in team - take your pick

We've had stonewall penalties turned down - we'd probably miss them anyway if you extrapolate our current form with penalties.

Suarez WAS racist - end of, Kenny made a tool of himself over that episode and frankly I feel well emabarassed about the whole affair - KD blackened the LFC name and reputation over that one! On that alone he shoudl be sacked IMO.

"I don't think we are far from being a good team" - not that far, I'd say 5 years or so when the likes of Henderson, Adam, Carroll, Downing et al can be moved off our wage bill. They are not going to move for any less money so we are lumbered with them for 5 years.

I think you should accept the fact that supporters of KD have settled for mediocrity. Would you haev given Hodgson the same amount of time KD has had? I doubt it, with thos rose tinted KD branded specs you're wearing!

Adrian said...

Because the owners said so bet your hoping we finish in the bottom

Dave Thomas said...

Why do some people think its either one extreme or the other, If we win the FA cup its a massively successfull season....NO, we want to be in the champions league, BUT it will be a great achievement, of course our league form isnt good enough, But if we finish 7th and win 2 cups that IS progress as the last 2 seasons we finished 7th and 6th and won zilch.

Adrian said...

Yes and if so many defenders had not been injured sinc the start of this year we would still be in with a shout for top four

Chris said...

That's only relevant if all competitions are equal.  Do you really think that the Carling Cup (or even the FA Cup) is of the same value as the Champions League?

The problem is that, yeah, Liverpool may well end the season with two trophies, but they'll still be in a weaker position than Arsenal and City (financially and in their ability to attract players, fans and sponsors) simply because they're in the Champions League.  They don't HAVE to win the CL, just being in the group stages is worth more than the Carling Cup and FA Cup combined.

I know that from a fans perspective winning the cups is great but taking a long term view they really aren't that important when compared to the league and Champions League.

Ray said...

kd will be at lp next season. he has to buy better players like quality cm, natural wide left midfield that can cross very well as well as the right hand side. needs another quality striker in the bracket of 25 million - 35 million. he can sell ac for whatevr he can get as i dont think he fits into lp style of play. need also quality cm in the structure as sg thats if we can find one like sg. i think so we make top 4 we will attrack top players.

Chris said...

Critics have no-where to go if they win the FA Cup? Okay, I know Hansen is biased towards Liverpool and Dalglish, even said as much on MOTD, but even with two cups there is no way that this season can be put down as anything other than a failure.

From the stated goals at the start and the money spent over the last year and a half, not to mention even the finishing positions of the previous two seasons, this just cannot be brushed off as a good campaign even with two cups won.  Fair enough I can support the school of thought to give Dalglish more time but mistakes have been made and must be both realised and rectified.

Baron Marsden said...

27 times we have been within an inch or two of scoring. yes off target but by the skin of your teeth. penaties, gerrard, suarez, kuyt, adam. all good penalty takers. . but been unlucky. stonewall penalties. they didnt miss them all so what makes you say we wouldnt have scored 4 in our last 3 games. Suarez was NOT racist and im sick of people saying he was. who witnessed it? EVRA. so hes racist because Evra said he was, but then Evra says he doent think he is racist. . 1 x Robbie Fowler in that team this year would have changed a lot . IN KENNY WE TRUST. . Im just saying we have been UNLUCKY this year. hitting the post/bar is unlucky. missing a penalty is unlucky, having offside goals given against us is unlucky, having goals disallowed that havent been offside is unlucky, havint the ball cross the line and not given a goal is unlucky, having your best players out for the season is unlucky, i could go on and on Henderson & Carroll are young, give them time. Everyone said Lucas Leiva was the worst player to pull on a Liverpool shirt. Ask them what they think of him now. . .

Baron Marsden said...

I hope and think fsg will sack kenny. Werner said yesterday they wont but come on he would of never said yes ahead of a game like this vs everton he said no to try to back kenny and give him and the team confidence they need to beat everton, thats my view. Regardless we win the cup kenny has to go we all know why, wont speak about the reasons we obviously have a thousand ones, the important thing is kenny to leave soon as the season is over and start everything again, new manager new CLASS players etc, and why do we need a football director when the manager asks for players to be signed? cant see why we need one, just get a good manager he will do the job for us on and off the pitch.

What about the removal of Brukner? I raised the question a few months ago that our players are fit and can run all day but lack sprinting power. Our players struggle to break away in attacks and have done so ever since Brukner arrived in 2010.

Spaniard said...

that is one darn long period of unluckiness - you could go further and say that we are actually a cursed club this year!!

Also, are you saying the match officials are making adverse decisons against us (e.g penalty appeakls turned down, offside goals against us, etc)??? or alluding like KD did, that there is a conspiracy? You make your own luck, and I guess the likes of Downing, Carroll, Henderson and Adam are making there own unluck!!

The Suarez thing - I'm not saying he is racist, but calling him "negrito" repeatedly (which Suarez admits to saying) does have racist connotations adn you just can't say that these days. The aftermath for me was/is the problem - KD shoudl have dealt with it a lot better instead of excacerbating the situation with the T-Shirt thing adn his blow up at Shreevesy wehn interviewed about the handshake

In regards to Lucas, yes he has improved vastly - about time really! But that is an indictment of how poor he was initially, so he's bbound to look far superior to what he was. Also, if he is now considered our best player, God help us! He is a good player but I don't thhink he is anything special - do you think he is better than mascherano?

Both are important if you want to hold onto players. If Rafa had won the Europa in his last season that could have saved his job. The FA Cup final is watched in 96 countries and can be used to attract new fans. Problem is you are thinking money where players want trophies and big games and any domestic cup final is a big day to a player and can be used to attract players as well as Champions League qualification.

This is the
first important decision by our Principal Owner John W. Henry and Chairman
Thomas Werner.  I am smelling are more
such important decisions to follow!  This
shows their pure determination to get things finally right and transform the
fortunes of our beloved club!

Their second
important decision is to promote Kenny Dalglish as Football Director with
specific duties of introducing the Liverpool way to the current and new players
as well as to the new manager (his job description should not be including
transfer policy duties).

Their third
important decision is to appoint a world class manager with the following 3
main characteristics:

1. To have a
proven winning record (including main titles)

2. A real
winner manager

3. With a
deep knowledge and understanding of modernized football

Winning the oldest footballing trophy in the world should not be ridiculed. Two cup wins would not be a bad return in a league season which has been abysmal, and humiliating in the extreme. The league is our bread and butter. Get that right and the european challenge automatically falls into place. Thank Heaven we weren't involved involved in Europe this season ! Incidentally Jaimie, I think that following the admission from Dalglish that he was the person responsible for the signing of our lacklustre 'stars', you are owed unqualified apologises from several contributors who argued that you were wrong in blaming him for the signings !

Simon said...

There will always be critics

Liverpool FC are a big target, everyone loves to gloat at a "fallen giant", and it sells newspapers, generates website hits

Kenny deserves to be given a chance and i believe he will be

These owners have proved that they are ruthless, and Comolli was let go because he overspent. Yes the owners signed off on it, but they thought they had hired a shrewd football expert...... I hoped Comolli would be good but 35 million on an injured player that we could have signed for 15 million in the summer!!!

Maybe why the doc has gone too, for signing off on medical.

Even if Liverpool were winning everything, people would still be having a moan

We all want "The Liverpool Way" to thrive, well Kenny worked with Paisley and Fagan, who worked with the author - Shankly

So shut up looking for instant success, be patient, or go support a petro dollar club

why is it that everyone is talking as if we have already won the FA cup, and hypothesising if that would constitute a good season???

We will not win the FA cup - Everton will turn us over IMO tomorrow. I woul dlike to see what the fans will say by 3pm tomorrow afternoon when we are knocked out.

No doubt the apologists will find some other way of glossing over our season. Of course if we won two cups it woudln't be a total failure of a season, but stop talking like it is in the bag!!!

Can we agree at least then, that if we don't win the FA cup , this whole season has been a pile of cr@p!!

Neb said...

Kenny has proven to be a winning manager. Not all managers win in their 1st full season you know. Last season Kenny wasnt half bad, has everyone forgotten? Even bad players play better under Dalglish. Pool has beaten Manc City, United and Chelsea too. Come on, give credit when credit is due also!

Boyspen53 said...

You can't even get the word right. Suarez admitted to using the word 'negro' which literally translated means 'black'. I have lost count of the number of people who still think that Suarez called Evra 'ni**er'. That is the word that Evra actually claimed had been used when he went to the referee with SAF. I do wish that people like you would keep their counsel or,better still, read the report in full before making inaccurate comments.

Jaimie, I do not know how old you are but you are in urgent need of a history lesson.Sir Alex Ferguson took over United in Nov. 1986 and took them to the dizzy heights of 12th in his first season. It was another three years before he won his first trophy (after a replay), the 'meaningless' FA Cup. It then took him another two years to collect his first title. Clearly the United board had far more patience than you.
As for the 'meaningless' Carling Cup, there are fans of at least 16 Premier League clubs who would gag for any trophy right now. Fourth place does not a warrant a plaque on your honours board.
You may have many qualities (your site is a credit to you) but patience is clearly not one of them. As my user name suggests, I endured EIGHT long years watching LFC in the old second division. Have more faith, LFC, is on the way back, win or lose on Saturday.

I do think you're half-way right. It's just peoples' opinions get so polarised one way due to the raw feelings at a terrible run of results. There is truth on both sides: KD has achieved some impressive results and I think some more attractive football with some of the old spark there; but at the same time has found himself in a terrible run of results which he has seemed quite powerless to alter, relying on bad luck excuses along the way (coupled as has been highlighted with some pretty rude/sulky post-match interviews).

This is the hard end of an extremely testing profession. My gut says give him more time, but be extremely wary not to kid yourself; and he should definitely address his attitude towards media.

Spaniard said...

regardless if he said it once or twice (you're splitting hairs now pal, once is enough anyway) he made reference to Evra's colour, in a heated match against bitter rivals - are you telling me the word "negro" or "negrito" wasn't used in a derogatory manner when he said it? You think he was trying to be friendly using that word? Wake up and smell the coffee mate - he used it as an inult FFS and deserved his ban - there is no need to refernce someone's colour EVER in ANY situation. So sorry if i hadn't read the transcript but the fact is he called him that at least once - we can agree on that at least!

Philip Dean said...

well done top man, ever paid for a ticket!!!

Spaniard said...

as my username implies I am half Spanish and totally fluent in the language. The only difference between "negro" and "negrito" is nothing. if you put "ito" on the end of any word it means they are a diminutive version of that word so negrito means "little black ", where as calling someone negro means just "black" -  you are just splitting hairs on this really!

Yes, the word ni**er is a vastly offensive term, I agree, but calling someone a negro instead is just a way of gettin away with it - is calling someone a black b@st@rd as bad calling someone a ni**ger b@s@tard? I don't think there is anything different in that at all in my humble opinion. So I will not hold my counsel as it is my opinion which i am entitled to.
tard
Besides, I have no beef with Suarez over this now, it is with KD and his reaction tot he whole situation which has disappointed me - very un Liverpool Way like, in fact i would go as far as to say KD has been a complete disgrace, and sullied the good name of Liverpool FC

With the greatest respect bringing swearing into the the discussion is moving way off the point. The one thing that Suarez did not do was to swear at Evra. The perceived 'victim' was the only one to swear on the pitch. He shouted "He called me f***ing black". Please note that he used 'black' on the pitch but used 'n***er' in his claim to the referee....and the panel ruled that Suarez was inconsistent and unreliable. You really could not make it up. While I am venting my spleen, I will point out that the 'victim' also threatened to kick Suarez and then added a threat to punch him.
Well, I do not know about you, but I would much rather be called a 'Scouse git' than be punched or kicked. Apparently, the panel and the FA saw nothing wrong in Evra's behaviour but when you consider the recent decisions regarding Balotelli, Young and Derry should we really be surprised? A player gets away with a potential leg breaker but another player gets an 8 match ban for using a word that only one person heard and is only offensive in a certain context.

Please, please send me the recipe for making your own luck because I am entering the Lottery at the weekend and I desperately need some good fortune. 'Making your own luck' is one of those cliches that a pundit came out with and people have latched onto ever since. It is as meaningless as 'things even themselves out over the season'. Since when? It is an assumption without basis in fact. I have followed LFC for 60 years and cannot remember anything remotely as 'bad' as hitting the post so many times; not only that, but hitting the inside of the post and coming out. The Suarez header v Aston Villa was a case in point. As for goalkeepers having blinders, don't get me started on that. It's been like watching a dozen Gordon Banks.

Kenny was a great player in the 80s, maybe even a good manager in the 80s and 90s. But it is 2012. I'd like us to have a manager that other good clubs would appoint if he was available. Currently, we don't have that. No, before the loyalists rush to say that anyone wanted KD sacked, I don't want him to be fired but hope he will choose to stand down. The FA Cup would make it a tough choice but, otherwise, enough is enough. We simply are not good enough and too many mistakes have been made that suggest that the manager, like some of the 'love thy neighbour' apologists on here, is stuck in a horrid 80s time warp.

Do you think Arsenal fans would swap their stadium (long term furture) for a carling cup (maybe an FA cup if we win it).

I saw this post on the dailymail forum on an article about Liverpool and thought I would share with you all. I as a Liverpool fan totally agree.
"It saddens me that the position of a team in the League is more prestigeous than winning a Cup. Because practically, as far as the League standings go, what is really the difference between finishing 6th and 17th? They were never going to get into the Top 4 this season, but they didn't expect a Cup Double (which is very possible) did they? Overly high expecations fueled by big spending has been Liverpool's failure more than anything. If they win the FA Cup, history will see it as they season they won their first trophies in 5 years. Now just dust yourself and try again next season."

Well, if Kenny can somehow get this team to win the FA Cup then i think FSG will have to consider offering him another season, if he doesn't then i think he's a gonna.

OriginalChan said...

Carling Cup isn't that all great to look back upon.

OriginalChan said...

I think Liverpool fans have been brainwashed into thinking 4th spot or better gets you CL football....(!)

Madness said...

4th is more important to us than say a club like Arsenal who out perform us in terms of matchday revenues.

Our owners want a return on their investment, CL provides that ... the best players want to play in the best club competition ... without us participating in it then we will never be a big club again.

what would you rather have as a player... 5 carling cups, or 5 oppurtunities to prove yourself amongst the best of the best?

Madness said...

wouldnt you say it depends on the trophy?

Imagine you are a Liverpool player at the peak of his career and you get this question... for the next five years you can win a domestic cup competition ... or for the next five years you can play amongst the best players and teams in the world to prove how good you are.... its this desire that is missing at the moment from fans, pundits and even the players which is why we are now being branded a small club / fallen giant

Madness said...

Rafa won two trophies in 6 months at Inter... he got sacked right?

Madness said...

oh dear .... ok Man City and Arsenal may end trophyless... but when Eden Hazard, or Cavani are looking for potential new clubs to step up to... they are more likeley to look in that direction because of one thing... yes the champions league... unless Hazard was watching the carling cup final and dreaming of wearing the red jersey to play in a dull 120 minute final against inferior opposition and win on penalties... something tells me some of the best players dont want to join us anymore... it is a bad season in more ways than you are thinking... we are stuck with this cycle of average players without CL football

Madness said...

what are we talking about now? the Charity Shield?

Madness said...

EXACTLY! AND IF WE WIN THE FA CUP WE CAN WIN THE CHARITY SHIELD! 3 TROPHIES IN ONE YEAR! YAAAAAAAAAAAY!

Madness said...

This woodwork argument is getting tiresome, we should just write to FIFA and ask them to increase the goals by a few inches

j75j said...

Arsenal! How many players have left searching for trophies?
Arsenal first won domestic cup trophies so did Man U and Chelsea before coming successful in the league.
You have to start some where players want something to show for their careers.
We all love CL football but its because of CL football we find ourselves in this mess 2 or 3 players sold to fund one player which weakened the PL squad then as soon as CL football was lost no other trophies won they jumped ship and the squad was ruined.
We are not a small club or fallen giant we have been in a slump which we can rise from  and domestic trophies are a great start to rebuilding a squad to challenge for CL football for next season.

j75j said...

Haven't we been saying it for 22 years?

Davekernow said...

Absolutely spot on!!

Geh54 said...

so just being in the top four is what its all about? it may be true that champ league is worth more money and their may be some truth that SOME players would prefer to play in the champs league, but players want medals! cup and league, they also want top wages and any club that offers fist team football, top money and winning trophies will sign top players, its not about money alone, you're nieve if you think their are players not in it for the money, offer Messi a million a game and see what he says, any club!!

Andrew said...

To be fair it was the lack of money being ploughed into the club by Hicks and Gillett not the CL that ked to Benitez selling players to bring in a star and fill the squad with basement signings. Benitez admitted he'd have done things differently and not spent as much on dross but gone for quality not quantity but an injury crisis would have crippled us. So in essence we are where we are because our last owers were shocking.

Spc said...

By qualifying in the CL it's a guaranteed return of prize money. Rafa helped the club to make over 20 mil every season by entering the last 16 of CL and that was the main source of fund he could spend to buy players. No investor will be interested if a club is not making profit.

Spc said...

Chelsea might not win anything but by entering the semi-final of CL they are guaranteed 25 mil prize money. If i were the Liverpool investor that is what I am looking for. Further, whole world will be watching the semi-final clash between Chelsea and Barca rather than the carling cup final with Cardiff.

Spc said...

Supporter like you causing the club to sink further!!!!

Spc said...

You seem very happy to see Liverpool sitting at bottom 10 in the table with a carling cup as an achievement.

Spc said...

Yes let's support KD who spent 120 mil to by crabs and won us a carling cup. Let's also support KD who select and manage a team that can't beat Norwich, Swansea, Wigan, Blackburn at Anfield.

Spc said...

To be frank I enjoy more watching a CL semi-final between Liverpool and Barca or Real Madrid than a FA cup semi-final with Everton...but I don't think KD can ever bring the club to a CL semi-final in his remaining life time.

Nrajyv said...

may be Spc should start supporting chelsea just because of theur revenues!!!!

Every article you write seems to have a very negative tone. You do occasionally raise some good points but you're such a freaking pessimist, I usually just dismiss them straight away.

Everybody knows that supporters have the right to criticise their team first, but that doesn't mean that that is all you should. Lighten. The. Hell. Up!

Andy G Morris said...

Oh, I did forget to say something. You say that the carling cup is a "meaningless" trophy. So, am I right to assume that you didn't celebrate the win then? Afterall, there's no point in celebrating if it's meaningless

Mark LFC said...

Give me cup wins anytime FOR THE FIRST SEASON. I pity the rest of so-called fans who expects their children to be gold medalist in Olympics at all times!

Blackwog said...

Where have you been? did you know that the whole Suarez thing is old now let it go. By the way did you know that Lucas was and is playing out of his more comfortable role as an attacking midfielder, LFC saw to that when he arrived so i say good on him.

Kenny is in his 60's now, plays tactics from the 80's and is as stubborn as a donkey. Don't get me wrong, i love Kenny and don't want him to ruin his reputation with failure. FSG have already shown they won't accept what's happening and booted ot comolli and a couple of others, i'm sure Kenny also has been left in no doubt about what they expect, i bet they're already looking for his replacement. So, do they really trust him with another £100 mill? very much doubt it.

Steven Dee said...

Not with fans like u we wont

Madness said...

Arsenal is a great example actually - Wenger has lost so many players yet managed to keep that club in the CL for how many years?

I disagree with you that players want something to show for their careers, it depends on what that is....... and a penalty shoot out agianst cardiff is not something for a player to gloat about come the end of their career?

You need to understand how important the CL is for a number of reasons to realise why 4th spot is vital to us... it brings in players and revenue... we are on a downward spiral untill we are back in that competition and I dont care if we win the carling cup next year or 5 years in a row

if we win the fa. cup, this season on the whole hasn't been too bad. Ok, we haven't achieved our primary target but we would have won the domestic cups- 2 out of 3 comps.
We can build on this for next season, but only if our scouting team, director of football or whoever is in charge of player recruitment spends the money more wisely this time.
Look at newcastle.. Ba and Cisse for the price of Downing! We have well over paid on Carroll, Henderson and Downing -we all know that. They could all come good next season and beyond, but we need players who are going to take the burden off them.
Carroll played like 11 premier league games before moving to Liverpool. That's a huge step up and a lot of pressure comes with that. Same for Henderson - was a big move for him. So, this summer, we really need to get it right. I feel that there are still good players who want to join us. Would be almost impossible to get players like Hazard or Cavani now, but we have to try to make a statement through our signings this time around.
The flip side of how the season may turn out is that we will not be receiving the revenue from champions league and therefore that impacts many things like player recruitment, income, sponsorship, brand image etc. which is pivotal to how a club operates these days.
We haven't played bad this season. We create many many chances - we just can't score enough - what 32 in 37? Thats not good enough. Thankfully the defence has been pretty solid, or would be in a much worse position!
We have hit the woodwork so many times! Sometimes you need luck in football. It has evaded us in quite a few matches this season. Anyhow, I for one am looking forward optimistically to the summer recruitment campaign, now that Commoli has departed.
His transfers were a risk, cos of the price tags. Only Suarez was a success. His agility  and trickery when running at opposition players is awesome. We need to build the team around him. He needs a pacey, skilful strike partner alongside him, who will score the goals that he would create with his creativity, whilst carroll adjusts to our team style. It will be less pressure on him this way.
Lucas has been a huge miss.  Hopefully he comes back strong next season.
All in all, we haven't played bad football this season. We haven't scored enough.Thats been the problem for me. We create plenty of chances in the games we play.

Can any remember where we finished in the league in 2005 under Rafa when we won CL. Correct me if I'm wrong but was a rule made to allow the the current champions to compete in the CL even if they did not qualify?
Serious question I could be wrong

I am sorry but you still cannot get it right. He did not call Evra 'a negro' as you put it. Again that is where a lot of people are still getting it wrong. He did not use Negro the noun but negro the Spanish adjective meaning black; there is a fundamental difference. In any event Negro and negro were once perfectly legitimate descriptive words until the PC brigade came along. One of the best articles I read on the subject was by a Jamaican who wrote an article entitled 'banned for calling a black man black'. Basically, he was disbelieving that the issue had caused such controversy. What happened a few weeks later? Alan Hansen was heavily criticised for using 'coloured' to describe black players. One of his critics actually said "I am f***ing black for Christ's sake". How delightful; foul language and blasphemy in the same sentence. Unlike Suarez's comments his statement was very public. I do not for one moment excuse the use of racial abuse directed at an opponent; my main complaint has always been that Evra's behaviour was just as despicable as that of Suarez but he walked away 'smelling of roses' because that best suited the FA's main political objective.

Where did I ever say that there were players who are or aren't in it just for the money?  I was talking about the allure of the Champions League.   I have no idea what you're trying to rebut here.

gabweb said...

You should catch yourself, because a lot of what you say would be better off in 'love thy neighbour', outdated nonsense.

OriginalChan said...

That rule doesn't apply anymore but yes, because we won it, we were allowed to enter the following season's CL despite finishing outside CL places (5th I think and behind Everton who messed up against Villareal I think).

How about some of you moaners submitting your name or that or jaimie kanwar's for managerial? Bet you two could really get the job done....not!

Fact: Kenny is younger than Kanwar's current paymaster fergie from old toilet. And he did not actually left the football scene as some of you had never been to Anfield to check. He was behind the scene at all time except the brief hiatus to Ewood Park (and winning another championship there, mind you) , even supporting the likes of Rafa and Hodgson when things started to rot! That he indeed took over was a relief and with already two finals to prove his mettle, I don't know what more you want for his first full season. Blame it on fatigue, bad luck or in fact the unsettled new players all you want, but making kenny the scapegoat just doesnt cut it! I have yet to see a manager more determined and a winner than Kenny, all due respect to the other previous managers.

If like me you have just watched the cup final, maybe now you will rethink your words on KD,Simple fact is he picked the wrong team once again,Andy Carroll should have started,Jay spearing is not good enough. If you take satisfaction from winning the carling cup then you do not support Liverpool at all.I watch for results in the league, wigan, wba, fulham, blackburn, aston villa, swansea,do i need to go on all came to anfield and left with something. The fact is under KD we are going nowere.
