Molby: 'Shockingly poor' LFC need someone like this 'priceless' €35m striker...

When a team with a 60m strikeforce is being outscored by the likes of West Brom, Sunderland, Norwich and Blackburn, it's clear there's a serious problem that needs to be solved (!) Like a growing number of ex-Reds, Jan Molby has lost his patience with Liverpool's misfiring attacking players, and he's called on FSG to sanction the signing of at least one top class striker this summer.

Liverpool have the lowest conversion rate in the Premier League, which Molby concedes is a 'real worry', and he's clearly unhappy with the way things have gone in the league this season. He told the Liverpool Echo:

"Liverpool don't score enough. Forty goals in 34 games is a shockingly poor return, given the players available.

"Watching the Champions League semi-finals this week, it was striking to see Mario Gomez leading the line for Bayern Munich.

"Liverpool were strongly linked with a move for him a couple of years ago, and look at where his goals have got Bayern. Not a phenomenal footballer, but a priceless goalscorer".

In 2010, Roy Hodgson tried to sign Gomez on loan, but his wage demands allegedly scuppered the deal. At the time, the striker's Agent, Uli Ferber, confirmed:

"When a club like Liverpool enquires, their interest cannot be pushed off the table"

Bayern then turned down a Liverpool bid for Gomez in the 2011 January transfer window. Just imagine what might have been if Liverpool had Gomez playing alongside Luis Suarez all this time.

The club ended up with Andy Carroll instead, and the rest, as they say, is history.

  2. This has always been the case with liverpool we were offered aguero before he went to atheltico for 14 mil but we were only prepared to pay 12 the same thing with simao and gomez yet when we do splash the cash we end up with CHAD yet with the amount we spent we could have had aguero, gomez, robinho, adam johnson, higuain, di maria, hazard the list goes on but we Bought British and the rest as they is HISTORY

  3. Jaimie, I agree. If our main striker, Carroll, had played like a £35mil player and converted 20 of those chances, we would be up there fighting for 4th spot. My question to you is this, who do you think was responsible for buying Carroll, Dalglish or Comolli? I think it was Comolli, if so don't you think we should give Dalglish a little less criticism.

  4. Fernando Llorente would be my choice..

Dalglish is the manager he has a say in who is bought or not it wasn't just down to Comolli. But it's not about them buying Carroll because he looked a good player at NUFC but the price we paid for him which was the major problem which is down to Comolli.

  6. This 'buy British' nonsense has cost us. Clearly there ain't much talent that suits the label.

  7. So, you think Dalglish was lying when he said that the signings were all his choice?

  10. British talent????....when did England last win the European Championship or the World Cup????How many foreign players are there in the EPL now???LFC have got to drop this buy British policy at all costs,or this club will never ever get back into Champions League football, let alone, win the EPL title.

  11. i wouldn't put  buying british players  that far up the list. england, ireland, scotland and wales are sh*te for a reason.

  12. 'apparantly', according to gary gillespie, the owners want young british talent. i would think, being as close to kd as he allegedly is, this is maybe  the train of thought in kd mind. after all,he did say after dc was fired, the signings were his decision and nobody else's. if FSG back kd with money on more british 'talent' (i use that term very, very loosely) then more fool them and don't moan about a lack of league success/missing out on a top 4 place.

  13. I actually think Dalglish had an input.. He even backed the signings. So, NO! I think he should take a certain amount of critisism as he holds the position of manager. He also needs to adapt to a more suitable manner when dealing with the press as I don't believe he has handled some matters very well. (IMO).

  14.  Carroll is an average player and always will be. Suarez needs more quality up front to aid him. Gerrard is playing too many different roles due to the lack of quality so we don't see the best of him. The British players we bought were absolute crap. I have better players in my local club.

  15. Jaimie, i am not sure you will not be on Gomez's back when things don't turn out the way you imagine then. I see Gomez as another slow player. He had a miserable time for the first two seasons with Bayern too!

Yes, I must however conclude at this stage he looks better than Carroll. But for another 35m?

Not since Toshak have we had a decent big man up front.  We've had Riedle, Dundee, Heskey and Carroll and they have all flopped badly.  Forget heading ability, we need a lightning striker who plays on the shoulders of defenders partnered with a player of the ilk of Jari Litmanen.  If we sign another target man when it is clear Liverpool have always achieved more with a mobile, quick n0.9 in Owen, Fowler, Rush and Torres then our management is thicker than I originally thought.

NO MORE ONE DIMENSIONAL BIG MEN!!!

  17. Gomez got 25-30 league goals in his second season at Bayern and averaged a goal per game in Europe in that season.

  18. you cant keep saying we paid £35 million for this guy and he's crap!  andy didnt set his transfer fee did he? everyone is slating him for his input but you cant blame the big man for not scoring enough, he tries his best but when the players who are supposed to supply him with the ammo cant cross, pass or get the ball anywhere near him for him to score then the question begs who's fault is it really, yes he has had his chances but at 21 he is still a baby in footballing terms and therefore deserves a lot longer to get it right, look what happens when he gets the right supply his stats are 1 in 3,yes we need an experiencd striker but who? for me downing + adam are the worst we have bought this season with a pathetic return for the money we paid for 2 so-called experienced players.

  19. in 2010 Hodgson tried to sign Gomez !!!!!! please reference that JK imo thats just not true

  20. It is already referenced (via a link).  LFC tried to sign Gomez on loan before the end of the summer transfer window in 2010.  Roy Hodgson was the manager then, and that was prior to Comolli arriving; as the manager, Hodgson was in charge of player transfers then, ergo Hodgson wanted to sign him.

  22. its clearly not just buy british as we bought Suarez, Enrique and Coates..... so i think we will go foreign this summer, and if we dont then we are in serious trouble

  23. I think the british players that we have bought can develop into better players, but they need quality around them in order to make them better. I love KD, but I think he may be the wrong manager at this time, but even the manager can get better. I think Caroll, henderson, downing, etc would benefit from a manager that sends out the players with a clear plan and then has 3 or 4 backup plans in case something changes or goes wrong. Downing looks really unhappy on the RW, but we still play him there. Henderson could do very well in a Lucas role imo. We have hit the post more times than any other team, but there was never anyone there to pick up the pieces and put it in the back of the net like Rush, MO, etc - Higuain might do well in that role. Pep Guardiola might be an interesting prospect if KD leaves - I realize that we probably couldn't afford him, but I think he might be intersted in this job.

  24. I second this. Pretty common knowledge.

Don't let Hodge-hate get in the way of the facts.

  25. I think Mario Gomez should be a lesson in patience for some of our supporters. Two years ago he was being ridiculed in Germany and now look at him. It seems incredibly shortsighted to use this player as a stick to beat Andy Carroll with. Everyone agrees that our league results need to be better, and they will be. I have no doubt that AC will prove a big success for Liverpool.

It's a shame we didn't get him as he would surely have been better than Carroll up to this point. However, it's pointless blaming Hodgson or anybody else for not getting him as we don't know exactly what the issues were. It could have been wages or it could simply have been Gomez himself not interested. I hope MadAsFuck is correct about Carroll but I am still a bit sceptical. Get him out on loan for a season to a club who will play him every week.

  27. Then you know nothing about football or i bet you only watch liverpool game. How can you comparing them. Even Bayern 4th striker Nils Petersen is better than carroll.

  28. andy carroll will come good
