LFC Legend blasts: *Rude* Dalglish is becoming a 'problem'...

Way back in September 2011, I started highlighting the rude and defensive nature of Kenny Dalglish's press conferences. As usual, I was slammed by fans for daring to criticise 'The King', even though it was patently obvious his belligerence was damaging the reputation of the club. Then, lo and behold, after a particularly rude interview in February, Dalglish was forced by the club to apologise for not conducting himself 'in a way befitting of a Liverpool Manager'. Since that time, Dalglish has learned nothing, and last night after the Blackburn game, he was his usual contumelious self.

Speaking to Andy Burton after last night's victory, Dalglish:

* Was instantly on the defensive, refusing to talk about refereeing decisions, even though he hadn't even been asked any questions about them.

* Complained about having to answer legitimate questions.

* Tried to walk out of the interview half-way through, despite no provocation whatsoever.

I have watched every single press conference/interview since Dalgish returned to Liverpool, and his attitude to the media is a disgrace; he is regularly rude, sarcastic, evasive and defensive, and there is no excuse for it.

And it's not only 'London' journalists who get it in the neck; much of Dalglish's ire is directed at Liverpool-based journos (i.e. from the Liverpool Echo/Daily Post), and even at reporters for the club's own TV channel (!)

Additionally, through his 'interviews', Dalglish has cultivated a tiresome and damaging victim complex, and this has impacted negatively on the club. Whether he's complaining about refereeing 'conspiracies' or pig-headedly defending the indefensible (i.e his handling of the Suarez-Evra incident), it's always someone else's fault, and everyone is out to get Liverpool.

Even staunch-ally Mark Lawrenson is growing tired of Dalglish's treatment of the press. In his column for The Mirror, he said:

"I sometimes watch Kenny Dalglish giving press conferences and don't even recognise the person in front of the cameras. Kenny goes in there with a suit of armour on, and you can see him looking at the people asking the questions and thinking, 'What the hell are you going on about?' It's a problem because, in this day and age, the PR perception is an important part of the job".

Dalglish represents Liverpool FC, but he seems incapable of putting his personal issues aside in order to present the club in the best possible light. Watching his press conferences/interviews is torturous, and it reflects badly on the how the club is perceived, which - as Lawro says - is very important.

Additionally, Dalglish doesn't seem to appreciate that when he talks to the press, he is directly addressing the *fans*, who are obviously interested in hearing about what's going on at the club. Treating the press with contempt = indirectly treating the fans with contempt.

Having said that, as is always the case, the fans are the great enablers, endlessly making excuses for Dalglish's derisory manner, and refusing to accept that the way he conducts himself is not in the best interests of the club.

People accuse Dalglish of being 'out of touch' with modern football, and his treatment of the Press is proof of this. 24/7 media is a fact of life, and any football manager who can't handle it is, IMO, out of touch.

Dalglish is paid big-bucks for the privilege of managing Liverpool FC; it is part of his JOB to deal with the media, and if he can't handle it with grace and dignity, then he should step aside and let someone else take over.

  1. Didn't Ferguson refuse to talk to the BBC for years?

  3. Gosh, it's like clockwork.  What does that have to do with Dalglish and Liverpool?  As I said in the article, fans refuse to look at Dalglish's behaviour and try and find excuses (like this one) instead.
Refusing to talk to the BBC is not being rude in public, is it? I have no problem with that.  Indeed, Liverpool banned The Mirror from press conferences at Anfield earlier this season, and that's perfectly fine.

I'll take Kenny over your endlessly negative dross every day of the week.

  6. boring! he can act the way he wants, does it actually harm you, take years off you life, maim you or make you actually sick, if it is all no, then who bloody cares!

  7. Good for you.  It's hardly a contrary approach - I highlighted this before anyone else right at the start of the season, so I've been consistent.

And you seem to ignore the fact that Dalglish had to apologise for his rudeness; does that not suggest there is a problem?

No, it must be me with the problem!

  8. The part of this that really confuses me is that he's acted that way not only to the general media but also towards the LFCtv reporters, people whose job it is to be biased towards Liverpool and make Dalglish and his team look as good as possible.

  9. Chill out he'll be sacked in May.

  10. Dalglish as a Manager, does not need to comment about Referee decisions or sending offs, or persistent lines of questioning.

    ReplyDelete
  11. He was also openly rude to an interviewer who earlier in the season implied, by the tone and phrasing of his question, that Jamie Carragher should retire, and somehow linked Sian Massey's ability as a 'lino' and her looks, as if they were relevant.

I honestly don't think that Dalglish has behaved perfectly as a manager, but I understand how and why he has behaved the way he does.

  12. Jaime, if this was one of the few negative articles you wrote that was critical of the club/manager/players/fans that didn't take a completely contrary attitude to the majority of fans, you'd have a point.

Virtually EVERY SINGLE THING you write runs against the grain and is tiresomely negative.

Good for web hits I suppose.

  14. With respect, Philip, you are part of the 'enabling fans' I reference in the article.  Dalglish can 'do whatever he wants'?!  No wonder the club is on a downward spiral.  That's precisely what happened during the Suarez-Evra situation, and I suppose you're happy with the way that was handled, right?

If he can do whatever he wants, why was he made to apologise for 'conduct not befitting a Liverpool manager'?  He admitted it himself, yet you think it's okay?

Do you not care how the club is perceived by the outside world?  or do you think the club should just continue it's narrow-minded, insular approach, which will ultimately lead to Liverpool becoming universally despised.

Tell me, what *positive* impact has Dalglish's rudeness had on the club?

    ReplyDelete
  15. I don't care if he's rude to the press as long as he delivers the result.Unfortunately, he doesn't.So he must go!

    ReplyDelete
  16. The blokes a tool! I put that on the clubs website last night and got slaughtered for it from all the "KK Could dump on Shanks grave and we would still back him" brigade!!! His interviews are arrogant, pathetic, childish and totally out of touch! The fact he tried to walk off last night AGAIN even after we had won says it all! Fingers crossed he is sacked in the summer!

    ReplyDelete
  17. I'm not saying Dalglish has the best interview technique, we know he doesn't but is he worse than many other managers. He wears his heart on his sleeve and is LFC through and through, what more do you want from him? Don't let the journalist in you cloud your judgment of his style.
I can just as easily pull your statements apart as you do his interview technique.

How do you refuse to answer a question you have NOT been asked?

I didn't see him Complain about answering any questions, he may have evaded some, but complain no, no, no.

Walking out, I think he thought the interview had finished, and moved to go, realised it wasn't finished an stayed to answer the final questions, and yes you did see correctly...He was SMILING.

  18. At the beginning I loved it but as the time passes by and hearing it all the time is just becoming ridiculous. I for one dont want him to b like Mc Taggart. I don't care what he does at his club and the way he talks to the media. However I do care what happens at Lfc and by all means if the question is provocative than snap at the person asking the question. But to do it after every game when there is no provocation at all is just to much. The thing with Suarez affair is mostly clubs fault cos they should've taken the case to the court and never exept the 8 game ban if they felt he was not guilty.

No, your last post fell foul of the word filter.  Look, Jeremy, if you can't hack a different view to yours then please go elsewhere; if you can't debate without resorting to insults then, quite frankly, you're not welcome here.  If you want to debate about football in a civil manner, then that's fine.

  21. Jaimie , I kinda agree with you , Dalglish's interviews sometimes make me cringe and he seems to have a problem answering simple questions , However , not once has he apologised for being rude , He apologised for the argument he had with an interviewer regarding the Suarez /Evra handshake and NOT for being rude.

Slightly off topic , the guy interviewing Brad Jones last night was disgraceful , Asking him was he pointing to the sky to his son who had recently died . He knew well that's what Brad was doing but I think he wanted Brad to break down so Sky news would get another exclusive

  24. Carl - please view the video objectively:

    * The journo's first question was positive: "Do your players deserve great credit" - Dalglish responded 'We're not going to talk about decisions that happened during the game.o  He wasn't even asked about them at that stage.

    * 1'04: KD was asked about his team scoring a winning goal, and he said 'I don't know what I have to explain it'.

    * re walking out: the interview had only been going on for about 90 seconds (!).

Jeez, any excuse to look the other way, eh ;-)

And this interview is *tame* compared to many others

  26. I'm still to see a proper explanation as to what difference it makes to results how Kenny Dalglish performs in interviews.

He gets a lot of grief for how he talks to the press/tv, but, they (particularly Sky) ask the most inane, pointless questions.

One of Andy Burton’s questions last night was  ‘Were you happy that Brad Jones first touch was when he saved the penalty?’ What sort of question is that?  What’s Kenny going to say ‘No, I wish he’d let it in and his first touch was picking it out of the net’? What is the correct, 'Sky-friendly' repsonse to a pointless question like that?

Most of these press conferences/interviews don't tell us anything that we don't already know due to the banal line of questioning.  Why should Dalglish (or indeed any manager) play along?

  33. I agree with you on this one Jaimie - KD is a representative of LFC now OFFICIALLY - he is not just KD on his own and he "can say whatever he wants" as a lot of people keep saying.
He is PAYED big $$$ to do a JOB !! PERIOD !!!
Part of that JOB he is employed to do involves representing the club professionally and with manners at ANY and ALL media engagements - Im sure this goes without saying ..
If i were his BOSS and he was acting like this to the media - which lets face it are CRITICALLY important to modern day football and to LFC - I would certainly be keeping notes - and when judgement comes at the end of the season this would be a big fat X on his report card....
AND i would hasten to add, it would certainly make a decision to replace him that much easier as he has FAILED at this part of his job/contract - remember folks KD is now a PAID employee of LFC nothing more..
He is not acting in his OWN capacity as KD the legend ..
I think many of you think that he is and he can get away with anything..
We'll see at the end of the season what the owners think about that - as they are the only ones who;s opinion matters when it counts..

  34. Total nonsense.  Look around: there are over 100,000 comments on this site and 95% of them disagree with me.  How do they stay live?

People can disagree vociferously as much as they like as long as it's civil; people who snipe, hurl insults etc are banned.  They can go and get into slanging matches on TIA or RAWK.

I'm  not wasting any more time on this pointless argument.  If you want to debate football then go ahead; if you're going to continue to bitch and moan then just go elsewhere.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Validation? I'm not the one suggesting people go elsewhere if they disagree with me.

I like to read a whole assortment of views and I'll comment if appropriate.

The problem, Jaimie, is that your site is too lop-sidedly critical and negative to be credible.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Who said anything about results?  The club's image is important, that's the main reason why Dalglish's incessant rudeness is a problem.  Plus, it creates bad feeling in the media, and if the media hate you, they will go out of their way to attack, which is exactly what's happened this season.

And what was wrong with Andy Burton's question?!  it was positive: 'Were you happy that Brad Jones' first touch was to save a penalty'?  That question can only elicit a positive response.

  40. Fuck the press. your blog included. Most managers hate press conferences anyway, and I love it when Dalglish, Fergie, Mourinho tells them to go and fuck themselves. Press are full of their own importance, but they're really just gossip-spreading-gutter-snipes.

  44. I do believe KK is unnecessarily  snappy to reporters and is not doing his image any justice. However part of me can see why he is this way since these journos are not his friend and will prey on any mistake he makes.

Plus Andy Burton is one of the biggest Bell ends I have ever witnessed.

  45. Where did my video of Ferguson walking out on a press conference go?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Have you watched the video, he agrees with the interviewer, stating its all true and much more then continues quite nicely with a statement around how he is concentrating on the good commitment etc and not talk about decisions on the pitch, what you suggest is complete nonsense, propaganda you might say, He said he didnt know what he had to explain about WHY he knew they could go on to win it, as he was stating he knew LFC had it in them to win, so not really a rude response.
Maybe you should watch again, and see whether your point on this interview is valid, albeit he is defensive of the team, something most managers are these days due to the inevitable mis-quote from jounalists/blogs/etc.
Maybe we should be asking for referees to be interviewed rather than complain that KD is rude!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Jamie,I have viewed it objectively, I've watched it several times. You can tell me to watch it as many times as you like and I still will not agree with all your points, not because it's Dalglish, but because I view his style different to what you want it to be. I've already said he lacks a finesse/technique when it comes to the media, however I have the decency to be diplomatic when it comes to airing my view. You are no less blinkered by your own views than the very same LFC fans you accuse of being blinkered by LFC.

I notice you have evaded this question - So, how do you refuse to answer a question that has NOT been asked?

I have seen plenty of interviews that lasted less than 90secs.

You imply by your headline that Lawrenson calls Dalglish rude and even quote a statement, YET I do not see anywhere in that statement where Lawro says Dalglish is *Rude*.
Now can you look at your Headline "Objectively"  and explain it please..

  49. Excellent article, Jamie its like your speaking my mind, i have to applaud the way you put your points across, there should be no excuse for the way Kenny is representing the Club, it is not befitting and, as has been said, he's already had to apologise....but its like he doesn't care???

Either someone is ill advising him or worse encouraging him....OR he has issue's which he needs to deal with....

I cannot believe that our owners will be happy with the way he has conducted himself this season, so its not exactly co operative.......kinda rebellious James Dean style if anything...

And, as Jamie says in his article, he's indirectly showing the fans how to behave....he's actively encouraging us to be like him....our fanbase is reflecting the same negative qualities he is expressing to the press....

So.....in that respect it is almost divisive in terms of the relationship between the Owners and the fans......because the fans are rallying around him.....and calling for patience etc..its like your either with Kenny or against him...esp re the Suarez/Evra affair...those fans who are not getting sucked into it, like myself are being alienated from the Club because we are not happy with how he is conducting himself...

People keep saying that no one is bigger than the Club, but Kenny is atm, he is defying our Owners wishes IMO, he is letting fans like myself down and he is damaging the profile of the Club and therefore the stock......

    This is a big problem.

A very big problem IMO whether we like it or not, i agree that he should step down, he needs to be told by the owners that he should not do anymore interviews if he can't show a certain amount of respect and humility etc..

I can see a showdown on the cards tbh in the summer between Kenny and FSG....i think he might even be pushing for one....the sad part is that he could end up winning the FA Cup and winning the hearts and minds of the fans and in doing so make it virtually impossible for FSG to get rid of him.....

As a LFC fan i'd like to look forward to us winning the Cup, but not if it means that the Club itself could become unsettled....regardless of the result in that competition he should step down come the summer IMO, i don't like the victim mentality he is embodying, i don't agree with the Club being portrayed in this way, we are going backwards in time not onwards and definitely not upwards.....

    ReplyDelete
  50. The headline is accurate; this is an opinion site mainly, and it's clear that Lawro's quote is in quotation marks. The 'rude' part is my interpretation.

Re refusing to answer a question that has not been asked: Dalglish jumped the gun and became defensive and stated he wasn't going to answer any questions about refereeing decision, and this was in response to a *positive* question from the interviewer. Why get defensive; why not just answer the questions as they're asked and put a positive spin on the performance.

    ReplyDelete
  51. You're a bit hypocritical in your statement about Dalglish. First you say he has to realise that he is adressing the fans and therefore has to be respectful, but then slay those same fans for still supporting him. Thus, if the supporters are happy with Dalglish, they're obviously not affected by how he deals with the media. Also, even though you won't compare it. Alex Ferguson has been doing the same thing for years, nobody's complaining. You have to realise that these people are criticising liverpool so much; so why should Kenny turn around and be mr. nice to them?

    ReplyDelete
  52. Yes, there will be isolated incidents with Ferguson, but Dalglish has created more hassle in one season than Ferguson has in his entire career. Plus, has Ferguson ever been forced by his club to apologise for conduct not befitting a Man United manager?

    ReplyDelete
  53. To what end is the club's image important?  So what if the media attack the club?  Results have been disappointing this season & we're a big, newsworthy club.  We'd be attacked regardless of how the manager acts in press conferences.

Ferguson is hardly the journo's friend and would appear to be far 'ruder' than Dalglish, here are a couple of examples:

"I f*****g told yese not to ask that John. You know the rules here" - introducing John Motson to the hairdryer after Motty had the cheek to ask why Roy Keane had slugged Jan Fjortoft in 1995.

"I'm no' f*****g talking to you. Veron's a great f***ing player. Youse are all f***ing idiots" - buttering up the press after criticism of Juan Veron in 2002.

But (regrettably) Utd have been the most succesful team on the pitch & have performed very well commercially over the last 20 years. The way Ferguson has conducted himself in interviews has (as far as I can tell) had no negative impact on the performance of the team or on his club's image in so far as attracting sponsorship.I was using Burton's question about Jones as an example of the pointless, inane questions which managers are asked on a weekly basis.  Nobody learns anything form the answe to that question, its a waste of everybody's time asking it.  The whole thing is like a pantomime.

    ReplyDelete
  54. And aren't you a part of that very same media Jamie, could explain a lot.....

    ReplyDelete
  55. And this is relevant, how...? I'm just a fan with an opinion, just like anyone else; I'm not in the public spotlight representing LFC in a rude and defensive manner.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Jamie, your just not getting it are you, your doing the very thing your accusing him of, just answer the question lol

How do you answer a question that has not been asked? There is no way Dalglish knew the question before it was asked.

    ReplyDelete
  57. jesus  christ jamie cant you just enjoy the result rather than finding negativity, that was a very enjoyable match and the reason im a red

    ReplyDelete
  58. It's a strange one.  Most of us thought we'd like to see someone stick it to the Sky interviewers with their platitudinous and predictable questions.  Nothing new is ever heard in the utterly pointless questions and drearily predictable answers.  And yet, Dalglish, manages to make one feel sympathy for the interviewer.  He comes over as such a smartarse, sarcastic and short even when answering perfectly reasonable (though admittedly mostly moronic) questions.

The writer of this article is spot on.  It's part of his job to deal with the press and if he can't do it, he needs to be trained so that he can.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Not all supporters are behind Dalglish. Plus, who said anything about being 'Mr Nice'? Dalglish should be aware that he represents LFC and act accordingly, i.e. in a professional, dignified manner.

Who cares what Ferguson does? United are despised for a reason, and Ferguson is one of those reasons. Does that mean Liverpool should follow the same template? Not in my view; the club has always been better than that, and that should remain the case.

And again: Dalglish admitted that his press behaviour was 'not befitting' a Liverpool manager, which suggests that the club has higher standards. That should be enough to put an end to this ridiculousness rudeness to the press, but Dalglish has learned nothing, and it will be part of his eventual downfall.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Lawro doesn't say Dalglish is the problem either, he says the "problem" is having to talk to the media because it's important to PR.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I revere both KK and LFC, but we have to remember that, to the owners, Liverpool is merely a brand: the fact that it is a football club is incidental. Anything or anybody that tarnishes the global appeal of the brand is not consistent with FSG's ambitions. Therefore, I think that neither KK nor Suarez will be in post next season. I would be sad about both losses (particularly the former), but the americans are about more than the parochial loyalties of locals with the red of Anfield running through their veins. I think that failure this weekend will hasten events.

before anyones starts im a scouser an a red and im a big fan of the old Kenny player and manger but his style of interviews is embarrassing to watch hes becoming a right tit in front of the camera i cringe when he comes on, why he has to be this way i do not know wer is the old funny Dalglish gone? saying it like it is good and bad he seriously needs to get off his high horse and do the job at all levels

    ReplyDelete
  63. Jaime you know as well as anyone that Andy Burton would have asked the questiong sooner or later! He would have tried to dig in on referee decisions so he could get a headline. Everyone knows that. Dalglish was right when he said he wasn't going to talk about the decisions, so Burton wouldn't have to ask about it... He obviously didn't get the memo. And you have to understand that there's a little bit of history with those two since the United game.

    ReplyDelete
  64. The clubs image is important because that's what attracts fans, sponsors and investors which allows the club to grow and thus can also help lead to success.  Not to mention Liverpool has always been a club with a very positive image, community centric and family friendly as well as conducting themselves in a certain way, its made the club a favourite of neutrals over the years, that tradition has been not so much lost but somewhat obscured this season.

Also, why pull up quotes from Ferguson?  That's two incidents you've pulled out, Dalglish does this almost every game now, and since when did Liverpool fans find it acceptable for the manager to go down to Ferguson's level, someone whom the Kop have derided over the years for his behaviour, has the club fallen so far that this behaviour is now acceptable?

I find it sad that so many are prepared to accept this simply on the ground that 'this other person does it too', that really is NOT the Liverpool way in my opinion, people should hold themselves to higher standards.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Whilst I agree with you on the matter of Dalglishs' attitude to reporters. His attitude does indeed stink, and I know Red nose is just as bad if not worse.
However, reporters in general have it in for Liverpool most of the time. When Rafa was at the helm the crucified him on numerous occasions. The point is that Kenny does not want the press criticising his team, so maybe he is happy for them to criticise him. It diverts the critcisim away from his players. Just my opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I'm not sure how you come to the conclusion that I'm doing what Dalglish does (!) That doesn't make sense:

    * Am I an official rep of LFC? No

    * Do I work for LFC in any capacity? No

    * Do I have to deal with the press on behalf of LFC? No.

    * Do I give televised press conferences about LFC? No

    * Am I rude to interviewers? No

I give my opinion about LFC and I do so in a non-personal manner.

And re the 'question before it's asked thing' - you're just being pedantic now. It's obvious what the point is here: Dalglish was on the defensive about something before a question had even been asked about it.

    ReplyDelete
  67.  Why does he have to answer the same stupid question repeatedly many times. You watch any of these interviews and most journalists play the same game. They ask a stupid question that know the manager will not answer and then they continue asking the same thing over and over again.
All questions related to football are always answered by
Dalglish, its the irrelevant tabloid style crap questions that he refuses to answer and so should every manager in the League. We had enough of loosers/failures turned journalists so called pandits pretending that are experts both in football and morality.

The same applies to you. If you were a true supporter you would celebrate our great win and not re-cycle this rubbish that others already written in their tabloids this morning trying to justify their existense.

  72. "I sometimes watch Kenny Dalglish giving press conferences and don't even recognise the person in front of the cameras. Kenny goes in there with a suit of armour on, and you can see him looking at the people asking the questions and thinking, 'What the hell are you going on about?'"

The above is Lawro outlining the problem, i.e Dalglish's attitude to the press. He specifically refers to Dalglish, not just the general idea of talking to the media. Then:

It's a problem because, in this day and age, the PR perception is an important part of the job

'IT' is a problem. What is 'IT'? Clearly, 'IT' is Dalglish's attitude to the press. Thus, Lawro is clearly saying that Dalglish's attitude to the press is a problem.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Is Dalglish any 'ruder' now than when he was manager before?
Did he harm the club's image in his previous stint as manager?
Did we stuggle for sponsors then?
Did his behaviour harm Blackburn's image or commercial income when he was manager there?
How does Dalglish's behaviour in interviews have any impact on the club's community centric/family friendly image?

    ReplyDelete
  74. I'm not recycling anything; this is the 8th time I've highlighted this issue since the start of the season. And please get off your high horse with this 'true supporter' nonsense; you are not the arbiter of who is and is not a 'true' supporter.

  75. You would be caring when players soon start saying 'F going to work with that horrible ba%*~ard!!

    ReplyDelete
  76. In his previous stint, there was no 24/7 media; no one would see his press conferences (except Journos), and only those who watched match of the day would see edited snippets of his interviews.

You're referring to a byegone era; this is the 21st century! The media is totally different, and managers need to adapt or die.

Dalglish is proving that he is stuck in the past; he hasn't move on. His attitude is indicative of LFC's approach in the 1990s: insular and behind the times, and it's that approach that allowed United to get ahead of us.

    ReplyDelete
  77. That is only your opinion and interpretation Jamie, and as you have already said, this is a site for opinions, that means other peoples opinions and interpretations too. Your articles are Speculative. May I ask where you got your quote for Lawro's statement, I mean you must have seen a live unedited interview for example.

    ReplyDelete
  78. So basically, if our manager behaved in interviews the same, progressive, modern way that the Utd manager does (the one who banned the BBC, walks out of press conferences, calls journalists f**cking idiots etc, etc), we'd go some way to catching up to Utd?

    ReplyDelete
  79. The source for Lawro's quote is in the article, and it's linked.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Kenny reminds me of my da, he doesn't mean anything bad, it's just his personality. Some managers are just more slick.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Of course you should expect people to bring up other managers. Simple fact is many managers are abrupt with the press and far more so than Dalglish. Does it excuse Kenny for not rising above? No, it doesn't. He has something to learn about the modern PR part of the game but he is clearly no worse than Fergie and others. I can't see why we shouldn't mention them too..

Otherwise I agreed with most of the it except the part where you suggest the manager speaks "directly" to the fans when he answers press questions. I think the press have a much larger role to play than that. Almost half of their questions are leading questions and its their job to get more newsworthy material from any unwary managers.

Hopefully Dalglish will improve this side of things but charisma in front of camera is a difficult one to learn.

As an aside: I haven't seen much in the way of our players being interviewed recently. Are they still facing the media or am I looking in the wrong places for those interviews?

    ReplyDelete
  82. The media coverage of the game has changed, the money coming in from TV has changed (gone up a lot), its a part and parcel of the interaction between the club and the wider world now.  Whether he's ruder now than he was then is irrelevant, that was then and this is now, the situation is totally different.

If the relationship between the media and clubs then were identical to what they are now, yes, he would have harmed the respective clubs images.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Boys Boys Boys, I am far from Mr. Kanwar's biggest fan but NONE on here can say they are happy with Kenny's press conferences. If you do it is plainly an attack on Jaime or you still have those Rose tinted glasses on.

I would say let the assistant manager do them but dont know if that would be any better with Clakrki in reserve!

    ReplyDelete
  84. After lots of issues this season, their interviews are pretty much restricted to LFC TV these days.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Seriously, are you for real? You have to be the most anti Liverpool person I have ever come across, how can you seriously expect anyone to believe you are a fan?
Kenny has been slaughtered by the press, especially the ill treatment received over Suarez, then it's Carroll, then it's the results, I am sure most of us would be the same way, Kenny knows how to treat the press, you cannot be civil to them as they will take anything you say and stab you in the back with it, something you are very adept at yourself Mr Kanwar.
And if 95% disagree with you, then that means one thing...you are so wrong about everything you write, so please stop wasting Liverpool fans time and starting writing blogs for your true love down the road in Manchester.
Really, go and do something useful instead of trolling and looking to annoy Liverpool fans for a bit of sensationalism.

  86. I am no Kenny idolizer but I am just saying it took Man U 26 years to regain the League championship. It took Fergie 6 years + loads of cries for his sacking to finally win the league. Fergie like his hometown boy Kenny is no media sweetheart either. Unlike Fergie when he took the helm, Kenny is no stranger to success, so I believe given time we would regain the league title and we too can proudly declare like Fergie once famously did, "We'll knock them off their perch!". Fergie was lucky, he was just hounded by the press and the banner carrying fans in the stadium. Not by blog junkies.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Jamie, I am being pedantic, but only because it is an important point to make.you are avoiding answering my question, the question forms a part of your argument to reinforce your view Dalglish is rude.

The similarities - It is the same as you accusing Dalglish of not simply answering questions from the media in a manner that suits YOU..
Are you rude - Yes you can be, telling people to go elsewhere because you do not agree with their opinion/view.
Arrogant - Yes because you hold your beliefs and views above those of all others and very quick to dismiss those said views of others.
Stubborn - you would rather try and sweep a valid argument aside with some quip, rather than offer an apology or admit you got something wrong
The issue I have is your choice and use of language/wording, Why didn't you just say he was "Evasive" then. You made a point of accusing Dalglish of doing something that he could not have, well not unless he is psychic of course. I read a lot of your articles and a lot are informative, please don't drag yourself to the depths the tabloids venture to, you can be better than them.
    I now await my Ban.

  91. The Pro Benitez Cult5:28 pm, April 11, 2012

Someone made a great point (don't know if it was on here, another forum or on the radio/TV) that said one possible reason for Dalglish appearing so rude and moody to the press and media was because it was this same press and media that spread the lies of Hillsborough. Don't forget, Sky (like the Sun) is owned by Rupert Murdoch. He's seen the twisting and the viciousness that these people can undertake in trying to sell there newspapers and Sky subscriptions.

    ReplyDelete
  92. In what way is the club's image harmed by the way Dalglish conducts himself in interviews and how does that have any impact on the pitch or commercially (given that Ferguson is also 'rude' but this seems to have been no impediment to Utd's on pitch or commercial success) ?

    ReplyDelete
  95. You just dont like Dalglish and so you will find anything to criticize him... since we won, it has to be his interview skills... if he is rude its because they deserve it.. they ask stupid questions over and over again hoping for a different answer, I think they should cancel this whole press conference right after matches... but then how will they sell papers...
would you like Mourinho to be manager? if yes... will you accept it when he starts to act with arrogance toward the press? I suppose you will be ok with it then as it is Mourinho... every manager has his style and sky did us no favor in there coverage with the suarez/evra situation... so i would not blame him for talking to him this way... anyway the only rude incident was the part where he walked away... I am not sure why it happened...

    ReplyDelete
  96. Jaimie was making the point that, as a club, our failiure to modernise (including the way the manager conducts himself in interviews) was a factor in why Utd had moved ahead of us on the pitch (and on some issues, I think there's some merit in that, just not this one).  I was trying to make the point that the manager of this 'modern' club behaves no differently to our manager in press conferences, so to that end, I disagree that Dalglish's conduct in interviews is a sign of him 'being stuck in the past'.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Like? I don't know the guy so how can I 'dislike' him. Why is it people always insist on ascribing a personal element to criticism? I've commented on one aspect of his management ability, it's has nothing to do with him personally. Dalglish deserves criticism for his rudeness; even his own former team-mate agrees 'its a problem' - I guess that means Lawro doesn't like Dalgish too?

    ReplyDelete
  98. Ferguson had to make an unprecedented apology to referee Alan Wiley for calling him "Unfit". Now I don't know if the club told him to or not, only Fergie and the club know the answer to that.

    ReplyDelete
  99. As has been pointed out, a managers job is to sign decent players, get them to play for him and hopefully to win trophies...a negative attitude towards the press really does not matter a jot.  In fact, current feelings towards journalists are so negative that many would see Kenny's attitude as wholly justified and certainly many of my friends whether LFC fans or not agree with his disdainful treatment of cretinous journalists.  Consequently this can only be seen as a be a positive for the manager and for the image of the club.  JK, you have too much faith in the power of marketing and image and not enough faith in the old fashion values of the beautiful game.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Who made Lawrenson a legend.!!!

  102. The Daily Mirror!!!!!! It must be exactly how Lawro said it an mean't it then lol, If you would have said a live tv interview that we could see in it's entirety then I would have accepted it as credible...
Jamie you of all people (since you run a media site) really should know better than to believe everything you read, how many hands would Lawro's article go through before being published, how many edits, how much sensationalising, altering  etc etc.

    ReplyDelete
  103. It has commercial impact because sponsors and advertisers are interested in avoiding any negative publicity, its why Dalglish was forced into a climbdown and had to issue an apology after the whole Suarez incident, sponsors weren't happy being associated with it and complained to the owners who then had to step in.

United can get away with it to a degree because they are by far and away the most successful club with the largest fan base not only in the country but one of the largest worldwide as well.  But even then these incidents from Ferguson are (the stupidity with the BBC aside) few and far between, with Dalglish it's become almost every game.  United became successful before the constant traditional media and new media coverage, Liverpool are trying to become successful during it and have to conduct themselves differently than Utd did in the early 90's.

    ReplyDelete
  104. usually disagree with everything jk writes but hes right on this on.Kenny is embarassing himself and the club and its pissing of alot of liverpool fans. Its his job these days to come out and answer questions from the press and if he was abit less awkward and abit more intelligent he could get his point across without alienating fans

    ReplyDelete
  105. And you deleted opinions contrary to yours..  LOL

    ReplyDelete
  106. Yes Kenny's obtuse passive aggressive style is probably not helping much, and is a little bit boring now,  but equally I dont think its doing any real damage either. But I tell you one thing, I dislike Kenny's press conferences a whole lot less than Roy Hodgesons. Roy played the interview game exactly how the media (and I imagine you) wanted him to, but I think that did a lot more damage to the club than anything Kenny says.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Carl - Lawro wrote it himself; it's his column; it wasn't an interview, so there's nothing to be twisted/altered etc. Lawro has also confirmed on Today FM several times that he writes his columns himself.

I don't believe everything I read, but Lawro is not going to falsify his own column, is he? Idf you believe that, then you should go and join Dalglish's conspiracy crusade at Anfield; you'd fit right in.

I never report anything on this site that isn't quote or fact based.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Why is asking about the sending off suddenly a 'stupid question'? It really beggars belief (!) Now it's 'stupid' to ask questions about major incidents in games?

  109. ... and another thing, if he's going to embrace the 21st century, could he get a new jumper and ditch the one that looks like one he last wore at school?

    ReplyDelete
  110. Jamie, you publish in a public forum on the World Wide Web, the nature of your site puts you in the public spotlight You invite people to give their views and opinions. You are an LFC  fan right, well then your actions DO represent the club. If you love something enough it is only natural to defend it, if that means upsetting a few folks along the way, well so be it, that's their problem (media). I ain't seen ANY examples where Dalglish's treatment of the press has been detrimental when it comes to revenue generation.

    ReplyDelete
  111. On the contrary, I am totally focused on the old fashioned values of the game, and everything I write comes from looking at football through that lens. Dalglish is betraying LFC values with his constant rudeness. He should show some humility, which is a true principal of the Liverpool way.

Dalglish should look at Bob Paisley and the way he conducted himself; you'd never see him being rude, defensive and sarcastic. He just did what you outlined in your opening sentence: signed decent players, got them to play for him and won trophies.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Jamie, lets get something clear, he said his press behaviour was not befitting a Liverpool manager in reference to one specific incident, not as you imply which would be he was referring to all his press interviews. Sorry but being pedantic can be important where a distinction of the facts is required.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Yes, I think you're right there, but his behaviour in front of the press has been equally contentious all season.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Interesting points, but what damage did Hodgson do to the club via his interviews?

    ReplyDelete
  115. I agree with JK on this one. I cringe when I listen to KK press conferences/interviews. Amongst his piers KK is a very charismatic character. I guess we just want the real KK to stand up.  Also just because you criticise someone within your club does not make you any less of a fan. Fans are never meant to be yes men/women? To give a metaphor, if you have children you support them regardless of their weaknesses, however, you will criticise them if need be so they can learn and improve themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Maybe Kenny should handle the press differently, but we cannot always be aware of his history with certain members of the press. He gives an interview because he is obligated to do so, whether he is nice or not is another thing.

The past few months have really forced me to re-evaluate what being a Liverpool fan is all about and what Liverpool FC means to the rest of the world, because when instances and events that have befallen other clubs  happen to Lfc, its massive news, but a sidenote for the other clubs. Following on from that, when other managers are 'short' or rude to the press it is often ignored. When Kenny is rude, it seems to generate an untold number of articles. Ferguson habitually treats members of the press with contempt and sarcasm, yet I don't hear many going on about it. Maybe because he's a Sir, maybe because he's been doing it for far too long, so people just accept it.

It was mentioned in the article that KD refused to answer questions about refereeing decisions even though he hadn't been asked about them. That should read: 'hadn't YET been asked about them'. Kenny knew full well that he was going to be asked about them, yet despite stating his position in his opening statement, the interviewer STILL asked about refereeing decisions. No wonder Kenny treated the question with short shrift.

Jamie I think that you are as deluded as the rest of the Alex Ferguson worshipping mob.  Alex Ferguson is rude to the media.  The only difference between he and Dalglish is that because of his power base in the FA nobody says anything.  I trust these clips will convince you.

    ReplyDelete
  118. All the valid points, Jaimie. Indeed, Dalglish should raise above his personal allergic dislike of the media, and understand a few things, i.e. that he:

    a) represents the big club with the worldwide fan base;
    b) reporters only do their job, so why get personal with them;
    c) media coverage is the information that everyone gets: fans, haters and neutrals. You can make press work against you, or you can make them work FOR you.
    d) We won't be villified as much byt the press if he didn't turn the press against us by his defensive and childish behaviour week in week out.

People say: so what, SAF doesn't treat the media well either. Excuse me, fellow fans. But why SAF's name comes up every time when you have to excuse Dalglish's shortcomings?  Like if Fergie does something wrong, then it should automatically be ok for Dalglish to do so? This I don't understand.

Someone criticised me for being a bit sceptical about the last night's performance when I said I was happy for the team and certain players, and for the spirit and hard work they've put in, but overall this is a poor level of performance for a club of LFC stature.... people started to bombard me: why are you so negative, how is that a poor performance, look at ManUtd, they lost to Blackburn 3-2, etc....

Tell you what! F*** ManUTD! They are not an example I want Liverpool to follow, and neither their ugly and unpleasant manager is someone who Dalglish should be copy-catting! We are Liverpool, not ManUtd!

    ReplyDelete
  119. Sorry, anyone who doesn't find those interviews odd, bearing in mind the man was forced to apologise for another bad interview only a couple of months ago, must have a really strange way of dealing with people.

I've heard plenty on here saying 'enjoy the win, ffs' since last night, but hardly anyone finds it strange the confrontational manner after winning a game of football? Or the attempt to start talking to someone else who was walking by? Or the attempt to walk off mid interview? Does he not know how to communicate at all? The way he tried to walk off, mid interview, was unnecessary, rude and embarrassing. No need for it at all. Talking about 'if you are invited to Thursday's press conference'.

And who cares what Ferguson does? It is of no consequence at all. Fo some of you justify anything you do wrong by pointing at someone who does worse? How does that work for you in real life?

    ReplyDelete
  120. Kenny needs to show more professionalism in interviews, its part of the job, TV revenue is big business theses days, so come out of the 80's and live in 2012 kenny. In addition what kind of impression is that setting on young kids!!! I just cannot believe how we have let our standards drop!! Its damaging the image of the club with our on/off the field performances!! Saddens me as LFC was always seen as one of the most well respected clubs.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Corr what a surprise Jamie has written another negative article about Liverpool. Good job were not successful ATM you would have nothing to do...

    ReplyDelete
  122. This season (in fact, the last few seasons!) the journos have gone out of their way to criticise Liverpool at every turn. Suarez was branded a racist on all the red top back pages despite none of them seeming to have read the actual reports; any journo who did may have instead called for an inquest into how Suarez was hung out to dry by the FA. I'm not defending Suarez's comments here by the way, but was it fair for him to be dragged through the British press in the way he was; probably not! He said somethng stupid and ignorant in the heat of the moment but probably not much worse than what Evra said. Evra then lied about the incident and changed his story at least three times before the inquest; none of this seems to have been covered within the British media???
I personally think the press have hounded Carroll into the shell of the player he is now over the last 14 months; the constant early references to his drinking etc were ridiculous. The number of times Kenny had to answer the same question over and over again was more than inane, it seemed to be designed to provoke a backlash from kenny. They certainly didn't endear themselves to him so why should he be respectful in response.
You make reference to the 24/7 media circus that Kenny has to respond to and I think if I was forced to answer the same inane questions time after time I would lose my patience with it too. And anyone should realise that off screen questions made by journos can lead to on screen irritations. I wouldn't be surprised if Andy Burton had said beforehand that he was going to ask about the refereeing decisions as it has been a hot topic recently; Kenny was probably making it clear that he was not going to answer any such questions before they were even asked.
I do agree that I would prefer to see the funny Kenny that we all know to the angry Kenny that seems to be rearing it's head more and more but it doesn't upset me enough to call for his sacking.
As others here have said, why not enjoy the fact we won a brilliant game. There are way too many pessimistic stories on this website going back to the Benitez era. The only manager you seem to have defended over the last few years is Hodgson, the one manager whose rhetoric was to knock the club and try to reduce the expectations of fans. It almost seems you fly in the face of the majority of fans for the sole purpose of creating controversial stories and it's becoming tiring and predictable.

    ReplyDelete

  126.  that bit of history was dalglish's fault and the interviewer for sky that day was geoff shreeves.

    ReplyDelete
  127. I think you're conflating two separate issues.  The whole Suarez affair (regardless of the rights & wrongs) was a huge issue which could have been handled far better.  I agree, this kind of incident is the type which could possibly affect commercial interests.  IMO, the apology which Dalglish gave the day following the 'non-handshake' was (along with Suarez's apology) a way of cleaning house & attempting to 'lance the boil' which the whole issue had become.  Really, all sponsors care about is success, as long as the entity they sponsor is succesful, they couldn't care less about relatively minor issues such as Dalglish or Ferguson's perceived 'rudeness' in interviews.

Look at Tiger Woods, He was (I think) the sportsman with the most lucrative endorsements in the world, despite having a reputation for being surly, rude & obnoxious.  These character traits didn't deter sponsors one iota.  It took a scandal of huge proportions for a few of them to drop him, and even then, Nike (his biggest sponsor) stuck with him.  If he goes a few more years without winning a major, that's when his attractiveness to sponsors will recede.

To conclude (an admittedly long winded repsonse!), imo, sponsors couldn't care less if the manager is 'rude' in interviews, they want to back winning (& I hate using this word) 'brands'.

    ReplyDelete
  128. You should go and support another team mate, I bet ur not even a true red, you rarely have anything good to say and it's always IMO lol, be a supporter and not a critic

    ReplyDelete
  129. Earlier you were talking about the "modern" game and how we should fit in with it, how does that fit in then with your old fashioned values?
Also you make earlier points of *were not talking about other managers because it's not relevent* yet here you are using Paisley to add to your argument, less double standards please.
You didn't see Paisley doing the amount of interviews that modern managers have to deal with though did you. The expectations and various roles a manager now has to deal with is very different. I wish KK didn't do interviews, but unfortunately when Sky et al got coverage rights football lost its soul and football that I grew up with was gone forever, media are now the masters and football teams are the dogs wagging their tails to the masters tune.

  132. I think you're grossly misrepresenting my views here.

    * There's no dichotomy between talking about the 'modern game' and retaining old-fashioned values. Long-time readers will be able to tell you that I stubbornly subscribe to the Shankly philosophy of LFC, and everything I write is underpinned by that set of principles. Many fans seem to think old school values are out of date, but I don't accept that. Football has moved on but people in at the club in modern times can still show humility when needed; can still be gracious in defeat; can still keep club business behind closed doors, and can still ensure that no individual is allowed to become bigger than the club.

    * Re Paisley - you've ascribed meaning to my example that doesn't exist. I stated that what Ferguson does is irrelevant to how Dalgish behaves, and it is. The Paisley comparison is for a completely separate point.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter who asks the questions, anyone on the receiving end of a question has control over their own response, and can choose not to be a miserable curmudgeon.

  133. how many times has a manager been hauled before the fa after comments made in a interview after a match? every season id say and it is the interviewers setting them up with the questions, its plain obvious that is what the do. so i am sorry but i couldn't give a shit what the media make of it just because they aren't getting the answer they want. people from the media asking questions and at the end of it saying "they fans want to know"... if the club has something to say then we will hear it from them at least dalglish installed that back into the club dont ye think? oh wait does this rant make me enabler too... who gives a shit

    ReplyDelete
  134. Totally agree with this article. As a Liverpool fan I'm finding these interactions with the media a complete embarrassment.
No question in the Dalglish interview yesterday was inappropriate or off subject. Yet Dalglish answered them all with complete disdain.
The siege mentality taken on in recent months is totally counter productive. I know for a fact Dalglish is a great believer in 'the Liverpool way'. Last nights interview was not the Liverpool way, & in my opinion unbecoming of a proffessional football clubs manager, let alone a Liverpool FC manager.

I can see clearly now why Kenny initially resigned from Liverpool and then from Blackburn.  The pressure of having a long term management role doesn't suit him regardless of his longing to to do the job.

I don't think Kenny was walking out on the interview, he was greeting someone he knew which is rude.  His whole body language made it clear that the person he was shaking hands with had more importance than the the interviewer and his 'stupid little questions.'

Well done to Lawro for writing what he did.  The only former LFC player with any balls.

  136. KD interviews arnt done to defend the club or anything do to with the club they are simply his ways of dealing with the media every manager has their own. However when jose mourinho used to defensive or when fergie does it they back it up with facts ot a valid argument. They do it with style which is entertaining to watch. When KD does he just looks a fool and that is the brutal honest truth his interviews have been done in this manner since his reign started last season. He just cant pull it off it suits some and doesnt suit others

    ReplyDelete
  137. furthermore there are times when getting defensive is the right approach getting defensive over a red card which was blatant isnt that time atleast answer the question. we as fans watch interviews for the managers opinion on something do we not?

    ReplyDelete
  138. A good Leader is someone who knows how to take responsibility for thier teams performance, and never points the finger at anyone but themselves when there is a failure to perform. Dalglish has a very hard time accepting this as part of his role and doing so, he is effectively chipping away at the clubs reputation. Dalglish needs to take a back seat position at the club and the owners need to bring in a manager who knows how to manage a modern age football club and isn't going to attack the media for asking the questions the fans are entitled to have answered. YNWA!!!!!

  139. On this occassion i can see KDs utter contempt for the press. When interviewing AF they are all nice to him with easy questions all set out so not to annoy him.No questions about Ashley Young being the biggest diver and cheat in the history of the premiership,no questions on Evras integrity.Yet the press systematically with the help of AF and his uk counterpart managers destroyed Rafa at LFC and they are doing the same with the players at LFC,they have villified Suarez the world over without a shred of proof and they crushed the confidence of KDs signings and also questions KDs motives for backing his players, they also question KDs ability to lead LFC.Like refereeing and the FAs decisions and the press,KD probably wants everything to be equal, quite clearly it isnt equal on any of these issues and the bias towards man utd actually is really embarressing its so obvious.

    ReplyDelete
  143. It would cost KD & LFC nothing to just go on media black out @ best it will serve us a whole lot better, perhaps we can salvage our reputation and integrity.

Everytime I see KD about to go in the 'media box' I cringe....

  145. if you listen closely you idiot steve keane comes through and kenny says hello and moves to his right to shake his hand. as for being evasive he is asked directly what his view on the red card which he had stated earlier he had no intention of dicussing.interviewers get managers in hot water knowingly by asking questions about officials and their actions, he would have not dared asked sir alex that question after being asked not to. i rest my case.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Reading through all these posts I can't help wondering why there are so many people willing to condemn KD & express such a strong desire to see him go. Is there something he is doing that they are afraid of??

    ReplyDelete
  147. I've got a friend we call 'Devils Advocate',. Your contrived articles with tabloid style headlines remind me so much of him. When you had friends were you called this also?

    ReplyDelete
  148. What positives? We scraped a victory over relegation fodder. Andy Carroll scored only his second league goal in six months. We let a 2 goal lead slip again etc.

Why do they players deserve extra credit for doing what they're supposed to do? Why does only the third league victory of 2012 have to mean everything? Liverpool *should* be beating the likes of Blackburn, even with 10 men; it should be a requirement; it should be expected.

I haven't said anything negative about the game; in the post match thread, I said positive things. Just because we win a game doesn't mean there is moratorium on discussion of other issues; I've merely highlighted a serious ongoing issue. If Dalglish hadn't been his usual rude self in a post match interview, I wouldn't have posted anything.

Sorry, I prefer to always take an overview, rather than getting carried away with one result. If we string a few good results together, then perhaps I'll share your optimism.

  150.  I was lucky enough to see Liverpool win many major trophies in the seventies and eighties, FA cup , 3 Euro cups, 2 EUFA cups, and a host of League Championships. During these years travelling all over UK and Europe , I learned many, many things from Genuine Scouse Liverpool fans, I saw how devoted to Shankly, Paisley, Fagan , and Kenny Dalglish they were, how even in the worst of times, they feared nothing. It was the passion and belief of real LFC fans that inspired Bill Shankly to join LFC when they were in the second division, the fans were his reason for being , and it is the same with Dalglish. The fans went to every game every week, saw all the game in person , not on tv , computer, phone, or edited highlights,   they  were all more informed about matters on the pitch , as opposed to most people on the web , who may know zillions of things, like transfer targets, stats, etc etc. The most important thing was that , they stuck together, one voice and supported the club till the bitter end. Now with modern media everyone's got an opinion, and most have delusions of grandeur.  Now we have so called LFC fans criticising our manager because he was 'rude to the press', God almighty you are pathetic beyond belief!  Alex Ferguson took around 5 years  turn united around, in that time there were calls for him to resign. He has been consistently rude to the press from the year dot, refused to talk to the BBC for years, he's moaned about refs for years, knocked on refs door for years,...no one says a thing,  especially  utd supporters.
Kenny has history with the press, the most significant foundation being the day after Hillsborough when the s*n accused Liverpool supporters of robbing dead bodies. I missed that match but my family went, I remember frantically trying to contact them to find out if they had survived. Whilst King Kenny went to scores of visits to support bereaved families and later their funerals, he had to endure loads of articles that were pure lies and evil, no wonder he had to leave. Look we need solutions, one thing that came out of the Suarez affair was the need to have a coordinated PR department, Mike Phelan regularly talks to the media when fergie doesn't fancy it. so that is not as big a problem as getting the new stadium sorted all these things take time and patience, we were almost bankrupted by hicks and gillett . All of you who want Kenny Dalglish out, want instant turnaround, it will not happen regardless of what happens in the summer.

  153. It was cringe worthy seeing the Kenny interview last night but I rather see a Liverpool manager fighting for the club than the interviews with the previous Liverpool manager where there was no fight and no passion. Kenny has been on the media hit list since the race row and they now with the bad results they are now sharping their knifes. We got to  remember he human and this week of all weeks must be a very emotional time for him for many reasons. He is not perfect but who is.The main thing is that he is Liverpool through and through and I thought way the team fought to win that game last night was a testament of that.He has got most of the fans backing until the end of the season then after that will see what state the clubs in. His situation reminds me a lot of the 89/90 season when Ferguson needed to win the F.A cup to stay in the job. Ironically it was a back up keeper that saved him from the axe....hopefully history will repeat its self on Saturday.

  161. Wow, what about some of Rafas press outings?  he was'nt much better, FACT.

    ReplyDelete
  162. Sorry, but I make no apology for 'belittling' RAWK. Idiots on that site have been attacking me and this site for years (totally unprovoked), and it got to the stage where I took legal action to force them to remove false defamatory statements about me from their site.

RAWK is a superfan stronghold, and if they don't like your view, they will hound and harass you, especially if you run another LFC site. one particular member of RAWK has been harassing me and my family on and offline for the last two years; making threats of violence; anonymous phonecalls; spreading lies etc.

The Police are involved as a result of the regular threats this idiot makes but te problem is he does everything anonymously, so he's hard to track down.

IMO, people who run football websites have a responsibility to ensure they do not promote mob-mentality/abuse etc because it can easily escalate into something serious. Sites like RAWK just stand by and allow abuse/defamation etc to happen without lifting a finger.

So, to cut a long story short: f**k RAWK.

i think you should maybe try high light reasons why kenny is apparently all those things towards journos.
the press are far from angels eh, there mainly a certain kind and ruin peoples lives and sh#t stir. half these idiots who do interviews are just smart arses who can pass an exam and know jack about the game.
funny enough ive watched interviews for the past 30 odd years let alone plenty by kenny and the press are just after a big headline tryin to dig, its so obvious and a known fact.
even you know the type of headline you put on top your pages will attract more attention eh !!! come on jk state the facts

  165. it seems any time a fan posts a relative point putting down what you say it is removed within minutes.i stated that what you said about kenny attempting to walk out on the interiewer was nonsense, he moves to his right to shake steve keanes hand.i also said he asked the reporter not to ask questions about the sending off but the reporter insisted and kenny put him down,as is his right. but within minutes of this post it was removed.WHY, a bit to factual for your little soap box.

    ReplyDelete
  167. but it was a senseless question dont you think

    ReplyDelete
  168. I understand where your coming from, its just how the media works in England. "Do the players DESERVE the credit...." That was a snipe at the players. His second question was even more disrespectful, implying that Liverpool didn't deserve to be the only team to score the winning goal. And then he asked about the decision of a yellow carded Jones, when he clearly said he would not comment on refereeing decisions. You come to North America, and listen to post match interviews for hockey, or basketball and you will see how professional and respectful it is. You would only hear these kind of snipes on opinionated radio stations.

    ReplyDelete
  169. You must know some top notch people. And, during the day, do you have to interact with any bell ends and is that ok if you are rude and dismissive?

    ReplyDelete
  170. What is he defending by telling someone he doesn't feel the need to explain why he thought only one team would win when the score was 2-2? And why is that unreasonable for the interviewer to ask him why he felt only one team could win it at that point?

    ReplyDelete
  171. You are obviously right. I remember your first article about it, and remember agreeing at the time. It's impossible to disagree for anyone without a delusional bias. It's confusing that anyone could disagree or debate this point. What is debateable is why on earth Kenny is quite so automatically hostile, even for the more mundane questions and interviews. We can speculate, but I think the most accurate appraisal would come from a psychiatrist.

    ReplyDelete
  172. Jamie - your articles are so annoying -my eye catches your headlines on News Now, so i cant help being drawn to this site but just to read you picking holes in everything .... go and support another team!

    ReplyDelete
  173. Jaimie you go on like this is some sort of revelation.. lilke you've highlighted something new that has gone unseen by fans..

Fact is Kenny was ALWAYS like this. In his first spell at LFC, his time at Blacburn and Newcastle.. Anyone around long enough and who is suprised by his defensive approach towards the media is being a little naive or disingenuous.. I certainly knew from Day one just what KK would be like..

Of course when your winning its easy to treat the media like muck a la Fergie.. just doesn't go down to well when your in the middle of a siht storm..

    ReplyDelete

  176. jaimie, if it said your name at top of article i wouldnt carry on reading, always negative and same old boot us down attitude. whatever KK says in his interveiws is gunna get twisted and hes gunna get made to look bad, every time i read these articles from a so called LFC fan site, i always think which p"ick has wrote this and always see your name, must be looking for a job on sky, scum

    ReplyDelete
  177. I think that Kenny has every right to be prickly with any SKY Sports interviewer. SSN has been at the forefront of the quite vicious anti-Suarez, anti-Dalglish and anti-LFC campaign. I am sure that the last thing he has wanted to do is stand in front of a camera answering the same inane questions about £35M Andy Carroll, big spending LFC and refereeing decisions. He gets hammered in the media if he criticises referees and you then hammer him for putting a block on asking questions about referees at the start of the interview. He simply cannot win in your eyes.
I appreciate that you are trying to be objective with your analysis but sometimes you fill me with despair and I wonder if you are Martin Samuel in disguise.
You may be a Liverpool fan but at times you are most certainly not a Liverpool Supporter.

    ReplyDelete
  178. Since when did Ferguson set the standards for LFC? KD had always been very poor in handeling the media and is clearly very uncomfortable in the modern 24/7 environment. So why do it? Other mangers get their number 2 to do press work all the time. Maybe some time away from the media would allow him time to concentrate on his core responsibility, produce a winning team. Mourinho has missed 43 press conferences this season because he is uncomfortable with the Spainish media and it's not doing Real any harm.

    ReplyDelete
  179. You make some valid points, but for crying out loud, must you always be negative?

    ReplyDelete
  180. would you slate him if he decided to let steve clarke do the interviews? what would you say about kd then?

    ReplyDelete
  181. I feel like I am in a Manchester United fan site here. So much hatred for the man that has given a lot to LFC over the years. Please stop going after Dalglish. He is a great manager and a great man. True Liverpool fans will not buy this. We all know how the reporters are. We have seen how presidents or prime ministers have answered stupid questions from the media. I think Dalglish is patient enough considering the crap he has to deal with every time he has to go for a press conference. Please stop trying to degrade the greatest man there is for LFC. Nobody is worthy to question his manners.

    ReplyDelete
  182. Yes, he is God, and we should all bow down at his feet.

    ReplyDelete
  183. Negativity is a state of mind. Realism is always the best policy IMO, and people who can't hack realism label it 'negativity' so they can distance themselves from it and remain safe in their comfortable, warm bubble.

    ReplyDelete
  184. Yes, it's all a massive conspiracy to destroy LFC, run by Darth Ferguson and his evil minions at Sky Sports.

    *shoots self*

    ReplyDelete
  185. I don't go on like it's some kind of 'revelation' at all - I go on about it because despite the obviousness of Dalglish's rudeness, fans still insist on ignoring/justifying/condoning it.

    ReplyDelete
  186. don't be such a prat. the reporters don't take it personally, if they do they need to get a life. has he got a mental illness?? after the experiences he has had to endure during his life, it's a surprise that he is still a sane man. many lesser mortals would have buckled. god bless kd, if he wants to interview in that manner, let him carry on and stuff you pricks who are easily offended. it's like people who are offended by tv programmes that include items they find abhorrent.........simple...switch over and don't moan, are you adults or children?

    ReplyDelete
  187. Simple solution for you:

    * Go to NN
    * Find an article from this site
    * Underneath the headline, click the source name (i.e. Liverpool-Kop)
    * Select 'hide source'

Now, articles from this site won't show up. Now, you never have to be 'drawn to this site' again :-)

    ReplyDelete
  188. and  then create another item accusing him of bottling it or not caring because he could not be bothered. the list could go on, as long as there is a chance to find fault, i'm sure you will.

    ReplyDelete
  189. Excellent points, RedChica - totally agree, especially about your scepticism over last night's performance. One victory doesn't define a season, but if you try and advance that view you'll be shot down, as you discovered (!)

    ReplyDelete
  190. No, I only find fault when it's so glaringly evident (and damaging) that it needs to be highlighted. I challenge you to find one criticism I've made of any player/manager of LFC that wasn't valid. And by valid, I mean objectively valid.

    ReplyDelete
  191. I agree on this. Kenny has not covered himself in glory recently. It's a far cry from the Kenny Dalglish when he was winning. As the manager of Liverpool he has to be more dignified, learn to deal with the press & other situations he finds himself in. Somehow I think he may not get many more chances.
