LFC Legend blasts: *Rude* Dalglish is becoming a 'problem'...

Way back in September 2011, I started highlighting the rude and defensive nature of Kenny Dalglish's press conferences. As usual, I was slammed by fans for daring to criticise 'The King', even though it was patently obvious his belligerence was damaging the reputation of the club. Then, lo and behold, after a particularly rude interview in February, Dalglish was forced by the club to apologise for not conducting himself 'in a way befitting of a Liverpool Manager'. Since that time, Dalglish has learned nothing, and last night after the Blackburn game, he was his usual contumelious self.

Speaking to Andy Burton after last night's victory, Dalglish:

* Was instantly on the defensive, refusing to talk about refereeing decisions, even though he hadn't even been asked any questions about them.

* Complained about having to answer legitimate questions.

* Tried to walk out of the interview half-way through, despite no provocation whatsoever.

I have watched every single press conference/interview since Dalgish returned to Liverpool, and his attitude to the media is a disgrace; he is regularly rude, sarcastic, evasive and defensive, and there is no excuse for it.

And it's not only 'London' journalists who get it in the neck; much of Dalglish's ire is directed at Liverpool-based journos (i.e. from the Liverpool Echo/Daily Post), and even at reporters for the club's own TV channel (!)

Additionally, through his 'interviews', Dalglish has cultivated a tiresome and damaging victim complex, and this has impacted negatively on the club. Whether he's complaining about refereeing 'conspiracies' or pig-headedly defending the indefensible (i.e his handling of the Suarez-Evra incident), it's always someone else's fault, and everyone is out to get Liverpool.

Even staunch-ally Mark Lawrenson is growing tired of Dalglish's treatment of the press. In his column for The Mirror, he said:

"I sometimes watch Kenny Dalglish giving press conferences and don't even recognise the person in front of the cameras. Kenny goes in there with a suit of armour on, and you can see him looking at the people asking the questions and thinking, 'What the hell are you going on about?' It's a problem because, in this day and age, the PR perception is an important part of the job".

Dalglish represents Liverpool FC, but he seems incapable of putting his personal issues aside in order to present the club in the best possible light. Watching his press conferences/interviews is torturous, and it reflects badly on the how the club is perceived, which - as Lawro says - is very important.

Additionally, Dalglish doesn't seem to appreciate that when he talks to the press, he is directly addressing the *fans*, who are obviously interested in hearing about what's going on at the club. Treating the press with contempt = indirectly treating the fans with contempt.

Having said that, as is always the case, the fans are the great enablers, endlessly making excuses for Dalglish's derisory manner, and refusing to accept that the way he conducts himself is not in the best interests of the club.

People accuse Dalglish of being 'out of touch' with modern football, and his treatment of the Press is proof of this. 24/7 media is a fact of life, and any football manager who can't handle it is, IMO, out of touch.

Dalglish is paid big-bucks for the privilege of managing Liverpool FC; it is part of his JOB to deal with the media, and if he can't handle it with grace and dignity, then he should step aside and let someone else take over.

  1. What a load of crap, Dalglish can respond to these journalists in whatever manner he pleases, most of the time the questions being asked are as dumb as hell anyway. Why are you so negative about Dalglish?, believe me there is no one better and come this time next year you will be a believer too!!!!!

  2. yes there is, you can carry on writing your opinion, Kenny does not trust the press and media and who can blame him, they try to sensationalize every chance they get,it sells papers etc. no wonder SAF refused to have any part of the media circus, at least Kenny turns up! you should be glad he doesn't say what he really wants to, then you would have a story, so blame yourself and your fellow media chums for his change of attitude.

You can say that "you say what you think", KD did the same only he is saying what is right and not what the press want to hear.

That is not a very nice thing to say. Some bad results and you are bringing this petty thing what journalists want to hear and to please them, too bad, you are out of the line mate.

KD is a true and true Lfc blood; he has no intention to harm LFC whatsoever, I do find his selection of players puzzling and he refusing to field some reserve players (young talents) annoying but he is our manager he knows what is best for LFC.

  8. Jamie, at the risk of being labeled an enabler (which seems to be your goto stance if someone disagrees) can I suggest you look at all interviews objectively too, this time concentrate on the interviewer, like all post match press conferences in todays 24/7 media, they are less interested in what happens on the pitch than asking leading questions with the hopes of a controversial and sensational answer or ask inane and stupid ones, seriously you're gonna say the Brad saving a penalty with his first touch was class A journalism that warranted an thoughtful and measured answer and no it wasn't a positive question it was stupid, what did he, you and all of us think the answer was gonna be, did we learn anything from that line of questioning, managers get into trouble for answering questions about decisions in these interviews, I for one find it refreshing when a manager refuses to play their games, if they want answers on such issues the media should insist on referees giving interviews. Now bearing this in mind, KD states stating he will not be answering any questions about refereeing decisions and yet is still pushed, where is the respect or integrity from the interviewer here, or is it ok for reporters to show the qualities you are complaining about. Yes he may be abrupt but he's seen to many LFC managers air their dirty laundry in public and get misquoted, he clearly wants to try and return to the old ways, that's not to say failing to move with the times as you rightly say we are living in a time of 24 hr news but we let them dictate what's printed. Sponsors are only interested in global appeal and a managers behavior in interviews will not impact this or are you trying to say that fans will turn away from the club ans as for fans around the world, I don't want to burst your bubble here but travelling around the world, I have met a lot of people who support various EPL clubs and not one of they said they were swayed by the manager, usually it who they see the most of or who is most successful, this team is then passed down to the next generation, South East Asia has fans of Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea. man City and Man Utd, are you swing the pattern. Do I reiterate just because everyone else allows themselves to be bullied by the media it doesn't mean we should.

  9. the media handling exposed by Dalglish is a disgrace, hes reluctant to answer questions, he sulks, he is almost about to headbutt the interviewer everytime he gets a question, I agree with John Adrigde, the performances on the pitch, the signals Kenny gives thats everything is under controll, bad luck, hitting 28 posts, referees not giving penalties, its the players fault we dont score more goals than the opposition, if we had strikers like van persie, rooney maybe 20 of posts would have got in instead. Its skills, flair or lack of it, people must understand that the players brought in isnt good enough, comparing Caroll with Rushie fowler or Owen from above is totally wrong. We lack class and skills like we had under rafa, alonso mascherano etc, I've watched several post match interviews with Kenny and everytime it is the same negative signals, why do you have that question? must I answer that? you saw that was a penalty, I dont have to answer on that? its defending defending, I hope Kenny and his staff can sort these things out soon with some good results for the rest of the season, there is only one King and thats King Kenny, but nobody is bigger than the club, pride passion and heart , LFC!

  10. I have no respect for Mark Lawrensen as a pundit or a commentator on managerial issues, he played the game yes, but he's never had the guts to managed at the top level (if ever) so has never had to deal with this sort of stuff, he is entitled to his opinion like anyone but I would never use him to win an argument and before there is a reply saying they are friends, that has nothing to do with how people behave at work, also when KD managed/played with him they didn't have to put up with this bull.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Jamie you're just becoming an unnecessary shit stirrer, a prophet of perpetual doom & gloom.  It's time to disassociate yourself from Liverpool my friend.

  12. Looking at the comments section - it seems that a majority of Liverpool fans feel that Ferguson being rude with the press gives Dalglish the right to be rude with the press. Some even condoning the act. My question is - Why do you hate the guy so much ?? You are citing his examples, posting his videos, making him legendary on a Liverpool website. You actually love him, don't you ?? Dontcha wish your manager was rude like sir Alex .. Dontcha !!!

  13. I think you are spot on I'm a Liverpool van but am getting really tired of daglish,s tv interviews his attitude towards journalists is a disgrace and he is turning any neutral supporter against Liverpool wit the way he conducts himself in his interviews would love to see him doing well wit Liverpool but he needs to cop on when it comes to dealing wit media all the best managers can cope wit the media

  15. When he first came back, it seemed like a plus, as you could see they wouldn't make a mug of him like they did with Hodgson (which was as much a two-way thing as anything) but now he is far too cranky. I'm not saying he has to be 'Arry but look at the ridiculously favourable press he gets and you can see the advantage.

FSG should make clear that if he wants to keep his job he needs to brush up on this kind of thing.

  17. Good reply. So many fanatics use this 'true supporter' nonsense. Who the hell are they to say who is a true supporter? I've supported the club since November 1966 and feel entitled to criticise them without some idiot telling me I'm not a  true supporter. But why do you write 24/7? I imagine most people who read things like this are not Americans and have no wish to have their expressions foisted on them. I know I don't!

  21. Do you think Kenny is like that with the players? If so you really dont know anything about Kenny or read anything any of the players say about him. Silly view.

    ReplyDelete
  22.  Jamie is there anything you do like about LFC? Be intresting for you to write a piece on why you support LFC and the things you love about the club. Maybe that would help many of us understand your view points more, as it just seems all so negative even when we should be focusing on ending our streak without a win and a FA cup semi vs the bitters on sat !

  23. people need to get off jamie's back, he has a very very strong point.

just look at the comments on the youtube video from our fans AND neutral fans! my friends think our manager is a twat lol, only us liverpool fans think so highly of the man, he's a club legend but lets not be little idiots, we're big men, Kenny is blatantly a paranoid old fashioned man who needs to adapt or get out. he makes me CRINGE

    ReplyDelete
  24. Its just amazing that Kenny pointed out right in the beginning of the interview that he was not going to discuss refereeing decisions and he does not want to be asked about any. What does the idiot journo do, he asks him about the red card incidents a few questions later.

Now you tell me, who is being a complete piece of turd on this matter? He explicitly said he does not want to talk about decisions, and what happens, he get asked about decisions. If you ask me, he has every right to have contempt for the press and treat them like idiots.

Fergie has done it for years and nothing has been said or done about him. Double standards? I think so.

  25. I have actually found my eyes opened the last few games.

When you hold someone in such high regard it is hard to see the truth sometimes. That is not to say that he is not provoked, but he should be able to rise above that with ease considering what he is fighting for; the smooth running and best interests of the club. It is plainly obvious how much this chance means to KD - if I were in his position I would bite my tongue and deal with things professionally.

The whole approach does remind me of Ferguson I'm afraid. Only he has persisted with the stubborn, arrogant approach for so long I would say journalists are probably loathed to even bother. Actually can recall him storming out of a press conference for someone insinuating they were struggling in the CL this season - think the guy probably had a point!

Anyway, I hope we don't end up there.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I think you also need to take into account the fact that Dalglish remembers how the press have treated the club and supporters in the past. Apparently his interview for MOTD was fine in comparison to the Sky interview. Personally I quite enjoy the way Dalglish manages to piss off the majority of journalists with his guarded answers, ask more reasonable and incisive questions, if that fails then criticism is due. Maybe.

    ReplyDelete
  27. No he can't respond as he pleases.  He is affecting the Club and annoying the fans.  He should show that he's the bigger person and deal with the media with some respect.  In turn he will gain more respect.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Sorry to hear that - sounds horrendous.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I have no problem with Kenny Dalglish being our manager but the reporters on TV are only trying to do their job. He didn't like it when Alex Ferguson was rude to his daughter so he should be more respectful. He is not doing LFC any good by acting in this manner!

    ReplyDelete
  30. The problem is he has no respect for journo's. He looks at someone like Martin Samuel and sees a bloke who's about 5 stone overweight with no discernible football ability and thinks why the hell are you telling me what I should do, do I tell you how to write? In that respect he's right but that doesn't excuse him being as rude and ignorant as he is.

His attitude this year has been appalling, combined with his abysmal handling of the Suarez incident he has done massive damage to Liverpools reputation here and abroad.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Ok, we will give KK 26 years.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Two wrongs don't make a right. Just because Ferguson acts in this way and it appears not to hamper them, does that mean all principles are superceded? That's just like admiring Roy Keane because he was a good player, while conveniently forgetting the fact he breaks people's legs; but its OK because he was a good player, of course.

    ReplyDelete
  33. So what! he's just not trying to get suckered into saying the wrong thing, when you are talking about liverpool - it matters - people listen to what you say and can misconstrue your words. I would be like that if I was manager and some arse hole reporter was asking me double meaning questions after my side had lost three times on the bounce.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Exactly, and it is not just about acting appropriately to ward off problems and negativity to achieve success - that is too indicative of society now; what happened to acting appropriately simply because it is the right thing to do?

  37. Kenny the Ogre! man oh man you would really want to be a bit fragile to consider this to be Kenny at his vicious worst. Guarded maybe, but considering you're nit picking who could blame a manager for being guarded, you read into every sentence the poor guy utters, and twist it to suit yourselves. He wasn't going to comment on referee decisions, because he didn't have hindsight of tv replays...how unfair can Kenny get, sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo unreasonable, he's a disgrace to the club, our tradition, and inventor of video replays....I say more interogation rooms in football! should take him into a room to make him watch the video back, then he'll have to give us soon rope so we can hang him out to dry. And you wonder why he might be defensive....whose got the real problem here. Why don't you write about your own team and stop the pretence. Good managers have the right to be pissed off sometimes...just look at this old Alan Pardew interview done with Gary Newbon, clearly unreasonable http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6oRuC_iUjQ&feature=related

  40. Personally, the only part I really find objectionable is he trying to walk away when still being addressed. To try to highlight all the more prickly content dilutes, what I think is, the truly tasteless behaviour.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I usually agree with you Jamie but you are well off the mark here,Ferguson is much more confrontational in his interviews, its part of the managers job to defend players and the team, what is up with you?

    ReplyDelete
  42. Don't think you could say that about the Suarez saga. By refusing to acknowledge shortcomings it surely has intensified things. I bet Luis doesn't feel too much diversion - be it a large part self-inflicted.

    ReplyDelete
  43. i think the guy who wrote this article should let us all know of his vast experience, playing, managing and dealing with media interviews before we actually entertain his "opinion" as he doesnt have a clue. fergie, jose mournio always defend their players and crate an "us against the world" mentality. As a fan from abroad i cant stand british media and people like the guy who wrote this article, all they do is stir sh*t in order to create a headline

    ReplyDelete
  44. Sorry it was just in my personality to steal from you or assault you!...? Poor excuse. Besides, are you really telling me he's not aware that walking away from somebody talking to you - or even worse interviewing you on national television - is not rude? What is he a neanderthal? (Actually KK still has my backing [be it wilting] so don't answer that!)

    ReplyDelete
  45. I don't think he tried to walk out mid-way through the interview. It looks as if he was greeting somebody that's all, not that he should have done that, but that's all it looks like!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Missing the point. Just because one person has behaved badly but some how garnered success, despite this shortcoming; does not necessarily mean that all fans would tolerate this approach, simply to acquire success. Selling out your principles for success? Keep it.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I think its because LFC as a club IMO has usually commanded the respect of other clubs; I would say not just from success but also the way the club is run. Perhaps this seems like an over-reaction to one press conference; but in actuality its more for many and probably particularly the Suarez affair.

Ask fans of other clubs what they think of the club's conduct and I'm sure it is rarely positive. That's I think why this is article has elicited this response.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Agreed the journalists/interviewers will always try to prise this kind of response.

Personally, I don't think it is even enough for a manager simply to have the skills to side-step the questions though; I think they should be giving it their full attention and respect (regardless of how mundane). It is their job, but also you'd like to think human responsibility, to treat their fellow man with respect. Maybe I'm taking it too far but I don't think so. Manners cost nothing, as they say, and I don't think it is too much to ask to get through the obligatory commitments.

  49. I noticed quite a few of my comments being flagged for review too, when you run a site it is very easy to be selective with which comments are aired and which are not.

    ReplyDelete
  50. So what would you like us all to do about it, Call for his sacking just because you and a minority don't like his interviews...using your logic when you tell people to use another website when they disagree with you,,why don't you just not watch the interviews if you find them so painful, turn the tv over an watch another channel.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I can't believe i just wasted a good half an hour reading all these posts before watching the interview. I was expecting something good.
What is wrong with this interview?
I hate to hear the moaning from some of you people when you have a real issue in your life.
How about supporting the club like real supporters and stop the moaning.
All i'm hearing about from the English in Australia is about the whinging scousers. I'm starting to believe them

    ReplyDelete
  52. I think Dalglish is trying his best to cultivate a "siege mentality" within the club (a la Ferguson in years gone by). The problem is that he doesn't command the respect of people like fergie does. He may be the King in the eyes of most scousers but to the rest of the football world he is everything Jaimie says. He's done the damage now. One "dropped ball" from him and the press will crucify him!! Ask yourself whether Kenny would be wanted by any other Premier club if he came on the market and the answer would be a resounding no!! careful what you wish for!!!

    ReplyDelete
  53. totally agree with the author here - I've been bagning on about KD's rudeness all season. At the end fo the day the questions asked are the ones I as a fan want answered myself, and as such I feel he is insulting me with his condcut - utter disgrace.

At least Fergusonseems to be polite and answers his questions quite honestly to be honest. Like yesterday - he was gracious in his defeat against Wigan and recognied the teams shortcomings in the game without getting the hump.

He is an emabarassment to LFc and shoudl leave immediately. I feel nothign but resentment towards him now

    ReplyDelete
  54. It does amaze me how blinkered some people are in regards to KD - if it was hodgson treating the media the same way as KD does you or with the same PL formwoudl be up in arms about it, saying Woy out and all sorts.
.. but cos it's Kenny, he can do no wrong!??? It's fans like you that will ruin this once great Club ... pathetic IMO, it's fans like you who aren't the "real" supporters!

  57. Jamie a few points
    1. How should a Liverpool manager act?Like Shanks? Shanks, great man and nobody comes higher in my hero list, was a sarcastic bastard to journos. Do you think after 35 years in England  King Kenny hasn't figured out the press's views of Liverpool FC? Could you honestly do a better job? I know I couldn't. Let's not forget the current WBA manager was very forthcoming with his views and made us a laughing stock, I wonder does he still think Northampton are a formidable team?
    2. Why should our manager be held to a different standard than Fergie when addressing the press, he (Fergie) has created an us against the world mentality, Mourinho done it as well and Kenny is trying to do that.
    3. Despite all I've said in favour of Kenny I think today's news on Comolli is highly significant. I honestly believe that whilst Kenny was the right man to drag the club out of the shit left by Hicks, Gillett and the current WBA manager, Kenny isn't the long term manager for us if we're looking to get back to where we were just 4 years ago. However I believe our owners aren't stupid and know Kenny has a Godlike status amongst the fans so to sack him completely would piss off the fans so why not move him upstairs allowing them to get their man whilst not pissing 99.9% of the fans.

    ReplyDelete
  58. it's the so called LFC fans on sites like this that are making the club a laughing stock.
Jamie throws the bait, and away you all go. Works for Jamie's ratings i guess

  59. Lets get one thing straight. When Hodgson was about to be sacked, every LFC waited in anticipation of the new manager, and when Daglish was touted to take over a feeling of relief engulfed every supporter as the beloved king has arrived. To be honest it was a gamble, if he did well he would continue his cult status, if not he would step aside slowly. I can see the latter happening.

Attacking the manager, fans and players is not something I'd associate with a real supporter. Superb article in my opinion, highly articulate and truthful. I cringe watching KD's interviews, I think it reflects terribly upon the club, in his interviews he refers to the fans knowing what the club are trying to do and they will go about their business as usual? I would like to know how and which fans know what is going on, as his interviews are painful to watch and hard to decipher, especially as a fan when you wait all week to hear him speak and try and take something positive away.

Dalglish was exactly the same 25 years ago. He protects the club and does not wash the club's dirty linen in public.
If you want rude, just attend one of whisky noses press conferences in the flesh. I have and I was shocked.

His tactics are out dated, he doesn't have a clue where he is going...don't get me wrong i was really happy for him to get the job, but its been one let down after another in every way and if John Henry had any balls he would have sacked kenny along with commoli.

  76. The don with his theories? On the contrary, I see the a new reign replacing fergie's on the cards provided the owners are patient enough. Remember, dalglish has done it with two different english tteams and is something old whisker nose could not boast about

  77. I can see what you're trying to say here.  I think Dalglish has come in and tryied to bully the media to achieve a level playing field with Ferguson.  It's probably, just like Rafa, going to end up costing him.  Until Ferguson retires as manager of United there wont be a level playing field and unfortunately there is nothing that can be done about it.
