Football Cheats: No 26 - Ashley Young (Man United vs. Aston Villa - Apr 2012)

Today, the Premier League launched its '20 Seasons Awards', a celebration of the greatest players, managers and moments in Premier League history. Categories include best player, best manager, best goal and best team, but one era-defining category is conspicuous by its undeserved absence, and that is the award for best DIVER. Man United would win this award hands down, and as Ashley Young showed against Aston Villa at the weekend, United's players continue to be the league's most prolific cheats.

Wayne Rooney is the undisputed King of diving in the Premier League, and during this series, I've highlighted over nine Rooney specials, two of which led to yellow cards for simulation.

Ashley Young was a diver at Villa, but since moving to Man United and playing alongside Rooney, he's refined his technique tenfold, and as you can see below, he can now cheat with Rooney-esque precision:

Man United Ashley Young Dive

Like Rooney, Young is a disgrace to football, and the sooner retrospective punishment for diving is introduced, the better.

I can't see that happening though, and it's not as if football fans will push for it. Perish the thought! The sad truth is, 'fans' don't care about cheating, and they will condone *anything* - no matter how heinous, especially if:

* They like the player in question, or:
* It gives their team an advantage.

To see why football is in the moral and ethical gutter, you just have to look at the disturbing views of alleged 'fans' in response to Luis Suarez's recent admission that he would happily cheat for Liverpool.

According to some Liverpool fans, it's okay to publicly declare an intention to cheat; in fact, it's 'honourable', 'admirable', and 'refreshing' to do so! Truly sickening really, but that's the way it is.

Football fans just want to win; they don't care if a win is achieved dishonestly, and this is why cheats like Young, Rooney and Suarez will always prosper. When your own fanbase is *encouraging* you to cheat, and then *deifying* you for it afterwards, what other choice is there than to keep doing it?

Footballers are only as ethical as the enabling fans who cheer them on, and with that in mind, it's no surprise at all that modern football is a seething cesspool of cheating and corruption.

Coming soon to a cinema near you:

  1. the one time I thought you were going to write something not negative about lfc you didn't you had to just go on about Luis Suarez even though the article has absolutely nothing to do with him

  2. Should Ferguson now be sacked for condoning Young's cheating!?  :P

  3. Only man ure can get away with diving. the rest will be punished. Ask Webb. he will vouch for it.

  4. Mask, flippers and snorkel job. The FA should introduce a post-match punishment for such blatant cheating. That would quickly stamp out this malarkey. After Ronaldo left Man Utd Rooney filled his shoes with aplomb and I suppose he looks upon Young with the same master/apprentice manner that Ronaldo did with him, kind of like the Emperor and Darth Vader in Star Wars.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Sacked by whom? He didn't condone it' he admitted that Young went down too easily; that's more than Dalglish has ever admitted about his players when they cheat (Andy Carroll, anyone?)

If Young did an interview and stated that he would dive to win a penalty in the future then he would deserve to be sacked (IMO). He hasn't done that though; that level of stupidity is seemingly reserved for the most ignorant footballers, like Suarez.

    ReplyDelete
  6. And what if it was Suarez who did that dive; would you be condemning him in a similar fashion? In your last comment (on the 'sack Suarez' thread), you stated that Liverpool were lucky to have Suarez, irrespective of his cheating. Surely, then, you must believe that Man United are lucky to have Young, right? ;-)

  7. Stop bitching about it and make a related point. If you can't do that, go elsewhere.

Suarez is totally relevant to this post, and I've explained why in the article.

  8. don't start protecting fergie you hypocrite he says its hard for the referees because Suarez is diving about all the time.  look at that compared to what he said about young even though he knew young dived he still said it should have been a penalty why doesn't he say that when things go against him and also don't compare the king to him either you don't see dalglish saying young shouldn't play for man utd again

    ReplyDelete
  9. of course lfc fans wont  angry at Suarez cheating if it helps us that's rival fans job and that is why we criticize others because others criticize Suarez even though they're players do it as well that's just how football fans are(all of them) so do not only complain when lfc fans do it because every one does it

    ReplyDelete
  10. hes not relevant to young diving yet hes getting stick for it even though it was young who had dived this article has nothing to do with suarez your just mentioning him over something young had done because your a hypocrite

....And Only the most powerful countries can get away profiting from drugs, war and death.  The rest are terrorists, communists etc etc

Whoever generates the wealth in these strange and back to front times essentially have the power to spin things in their favour.  Today's business world is corrupt from top to bot....at the top!.

Man utd and Barcelona generate the most cash, pockets gets lined, everyone's happy.  Allegedly.

I didn't realise I hated diving so much until I saw Suarez go through his repertoire this season.  Have we ever had such a blatant persistent diver at the club (Gerrard excluded?)

    What am I saying!! I'm not a fan if I appose......MUST s-s-support..

Football has lost it's soul which essentially means it's dead.  Unfortunately football will need to collapse and reboot itself for change to take place as we are too far down the 'money road' to EVER reform from within.

Don't top footballers now say "If you can't pay me £100,000 per week I'm not signing for you"?  Doesn't that essentially hike the price of season tickets and Merchandise that fans will consistently buy in their desire to support the club.

Surely the least a modern day fan should be entitled to after all the various forms of supporting we do, is to voice concern once in a while without being judged.

The problem with today's society is parents are no raising their children the way some Liverpool fans support their kids...with zero balance.

  26. Im not defending Suarez, but he dives after feeling contact. Young dived with NO contact. I could say that is a worse dive ive seen from Young than all of Suarez's

    ReplyDelete
  27. Handling the ball on the line right in full view and getting sent off can not be compared to kidding the ref to gain a penalty. Its shameful for any player to dive and they all should be punished no matter who they play for.

    ReplyDelete
  28. The fact he did it vs his own club shows the lack of respect he has for Villa. Atleast Suarez goes over with contact. I don't see any contact with Young on this play. But hes British, in England people will cover there shame with praises and continue to boo the foreign imports.

    ReplyDelete
  29. im sorry I thought I was entitled to my own opinion obviously not and who said I don't like this site when did I say that?unless you are a website

    ReplyDelete
  30. i think its part and parcel of the game today.. pretty much every team has a diver or divers. I dont think Rooney is any worst than Gerrard or anyone else. However i think Ashley Young is the biggest offender of the lot and i reckon the ref's will take note moving forward and theres a saying...."when the boy cried wolf".

    ReplyDelete
  31. Yes, I did say we are lucky to have him but I never said irrespective of his cheating nor was it implied. He is guilty of diving as kindly pointed out by Ferguson but since then refs have ignored his pleas and on one occasion Suarez has been wrongly carded him for simulation. I don't cheer or shout, "Go on, lad" when Suarez has dived, indeed, I just wish he or any player wouldn't do it. Whatever merits or skill any player has as a footballer the very act of simulation to gain an advantage over the opposition only diminishes that player. The sooner the whole thing is stamped out the better.

Too many people on here are obsessed with Suarez! Why?! Because he's the best player in an average team that's why thus most of you are clutching at a straw with a poor character! He's nowhere near Torres was/is and never will be! Suarez wouldn't have got a place in the starting eleven in 2008/09 season and that's a fact. Can't wait for him to leave and we buy a player that's not so selfish, is much better footballer and, more importantly, a person that befits this club!

Very nice way of highlighting what was so wrong about the peanut gallery condoning what Suarez was saying regards cheating - when its a Utd player blatantly doing it and getting away with it then the pitch forks and flaming torches come out and rightly so -

But when its one of our own then the RAWK ray ban glasses are on and its suddenly 'admirable, commited to the cause, a noble sacrifice etc '

Cheating is wrong  - end of , no matter if its a Utd player, an LFC hero or some hungover bloke playing for a pub team on a sunday morning  - its wrong, not in the spirit of the game and should have no place on the football pitch.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Wilson Michaelpaul9:01 pm, April 17, 2012

great comment and sadly so very true  - so many have nailed their colours firmly to Suarez' mast  - he's very clever on his tweets and knows how to preach to the converted yet I predict a major meltdown of 'torres to chelsea proportions' when/if he leaves in the summer.

On some LFC forums it'll be like a kool aid party at Jonestown such is the heights that he's been falsley elevated to .

    ReplyDelete
  42. Whilst I agree with you Jaimie, Ashley Young and Man utd are not the only culprits.

Suarez already has a bad reputation for diving, we have seen Bellamy and Carroll dive in recent weeks, over this season even Adam and in previous years Gerrard has also shown this ugly trait many a time - unfortunatley there are very few players who prefer to stay on there feet when they feel contact - this is why I will always hold Lionel Messi in high regard

What irks me on the subject is the lack of emphasis that is placed when it is British players who are simulating- Bale, Adam Johnson, Rooney, Young, Gerrard, Cole etc have never been "villanised" to the same degree as Ronaldo, Drogba, or even Suarez -

On the subject of Suarez - I have read many posts in support of anything he decides to say or do which I do not understand - I agree with you that he does not show principles or morals and overall IMO has been bad news for the club - undoubtedly the majority would disagree but I think they will be in for a shock when he leaves , maybe not this year but possibly the year after and all of that unconditional support for the player will turn into anger just like the Torres situation ...

  43. society has bred this cheating mentality, everyone has a price and everyone will do what is required to get ahead. this is the modern world of money, titles and winning. it is now ingrained throughout society. i have said previously that the only reason its highlighted so much in football is because it is on every day of the week.
if you have never cheated on an exam, cheated a store out of goods when they have short changed you or said to amazon you did not recive something when you did, cheated a company out of profits by downloading illegally, cheated benefits, cheated by doing something you knew was wrong to win something in your life then feel free to put people down.
As i have said everyone has their price, hypothetically if there was a way to cheat and win the lottery, sit an exam, win a competition, get something free and there was a guarantee you will not get caught would you do it? of course you would.
people in glass houses should not throw bowling balls, never mind stones. i suspect the people who are saying that cheating is horrible and repulsive will be saddling up on their throne next to jesus and god. As the man once said 'he who is without sin cast the first stone'!!!

I wa salways shocked and afronted to hear other teams fans call Gerrard a diver - then I was emailed some youtube highlights of him and looking at them without my LFC head on , yep he's been pretty prolific down the years  -

but its not endemic of the mans character though  - unlike ronaldo 2 and most of the barca team who it seems has cheating genetically engineered into their DNA , Young fits this criteria and sadly so does Suarez.

You mention the twenty season awards...would be worth doing a series of articles based on different awards for the premier league exclusively on Liverpool FC? Just an idea :)

    ReplyDelete
  46. Agree with that, but they have never had the stigma of Diving attached to them from the media to the same extent Drogba or Ronaldo have - its a debate that is generally avoided when British players are the culprits but emphasised when foreign players do it as a trait in their game.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Downing v evra in the anfield league match this season.....

    ReplyDelete
  48. So true. nobody likes to see it. Perhaps rational fans such as yourself could explain this to people like comebackrafa. & mention suarez, gerrard & downing yo this crusader for justice.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I agree with that. Though maybe things have changed as Ashley Young is getting a much more public reputation for diving (I suppose some of that is to do with the rate of his diving), unlike Rooney and Gerrard. Young has been in the spotlight for diving since he played for Villa (I think he got booked for diving against Arsenal and O'Neill was quite vocal in his defence I recall).

    ReplyDelete
  50. 'laughing stock of the world'.....it really isn't.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I think Ashley Young's case is probably the most public out of the lot now but still lags somewhat behind Ronaldo, Drogba and Suarez in terms of public recognition of diving.

I see Suarez in the same light as Masch, Torres and Tevez. In that it is naive to expect those guys to have unmovable/unerring loyalty to clubs. As its all about personal glory, rather than sticking with their club through thick and thin, as they will have no problem in upping sticks in a very swift manner. Got our fingers burnt with Torres and yet, despite Suarez' questionable behaviour and dodgy form, we have put Suarez on quite a high pedestal already, as such as is our insatiable need for two or three heroes. Agger is more of a LFC hero, than Suarez, for me anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Forget ashley young? Wot happened about winning the prem & playing champions league football next season? Keep dreaming lads? Ha ha ha!!!

    ReplyDelete
  53. diving is a big part of football now and as much as i hate players doing it, it's doesn't bother me anymore when one of our player do it just because if our players weren't to do it then one of the opposition players certainly would. I know you don't like him for many reason which is fair as its your opinion but on the diving issue every player is as guilty as the other obviously more some than others but they all do it these days.

    ReplyDelete
  54. You might want to live up to your own comment policy. There is no need to attack other posters here. You refer to them as "sickening" and say that they are "alleged fans". You then directly infer that most football fans are of appalling moral standards and somehow directly responsible for this "seething cesspool", that their own behaviour must be a reflection of what you claim is happening in football. That's completely unjustified, simply because a small number of people commented on this site to express their honest views that happened to disagree with you. You are very much "attacking the person" in this instance and it's not right. Stick to the point: cheating. There is no need to go beyond that and insult people or make inferences about entire legions of football fans and football players. Most of us don't deserve your appallingly unfair and unjustified assessment but your article directs it to us anyway. Of course you'll squirm and try to wriggle your way out of this, claiming that you didn't mean it that way and that I've misinterpreted your comments. Yeah, like everyone constantly "misinterprets" you every time you write something that is so clearly hateful and derogatory. Maybe instead of always claiming that we're in the wrong you might recognise the vast waves of people who object to what you say and reflect on the possibility that we're not all talking rubbish. What you're written above is unfairly critical, presumptuous and over-generalised. It's genuinely insulting and SHOULD be taken that way by anyone who reads it.

  57. Thats a fairly wishy washy argument for tolerating cheats and diving in football mate ..

The man also said ' thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour '.. one of the 10 commandments.. which in football terms are the rules of the game.

Now this commandment translated into footballing terms means you don't dive or drop to the ground when you 've not been struck or fouled by your opponent in order to falsely claim an opponent has broke the laws of the game.. You don't falsely claim a ball has struck an opponent to win a throw, corner or penalty when you know it hasn't.. etc etc.. bearing false witness against your neighbour.. i.e cheating !

Does cheating go on in sport and in life, of course it does, did and always will. Thats no reason why it should be accepted or tolerated.. or that we can't try to erradicate it or at the very least control it.. otherwise chaos ensues !!

I don't care if it's Ashley Young or Luis Suarez I don't like to see diving or cheating.. who does ?? But more and more people are begining to accept it.. why ?? now thats the real question to be answered !!

As the man also said 'as you sow,so shall you reap'

I for one don't want to see what the next crop are like if this lot are anything to go by..

    ReplyDelete
  58. Your post contains a massive bitch about LFC fans. Hypocrite anyone?

    ReplyDelete
  59. You might want to have a look at yourself in that mirror. There are contradictions and holes galore in your tirade yet no retractions or corrections when they are exposed.

The truth is that cheating is the bane of football. The truth is that it is silly to make absurd statements like Suarez should be sacked or we should pressure our own club to discipline our players for cheating. That will change nothing and disadvantage our club. It obviously requires a whole-of-league approach.

If you feel so passionately about this issue show some moral fortitude and boycott LFC until they act according to your principles. And you should probably campaign for LFC to return the trophies we cheated to win (2001 FA Cup - Henchoz; 2005 Champs League - Dudek).

    What say you?

  62. People in media comparing Ashley Young with Suarez should remember the biggest difference here.
Suarez dives and gets a yellow card. Young dives and gets a penalty (sometimes also a red card for a opposition player). But Young won't get a label of "Diver". Suarez will.
    A country of hypocrites.

    ReplyDelete
  63.  With respect, it sounds like you are starting to lose it. I normally agree with your anti-cheat view but lately it seems to be more about personal issues you have with fans rather than the matter at hand.

Retrospective bans for divers would be a nice touch. 1 game per dive or even just a warning from FA would probably shame some players into cutting it down.

I think the FA should be your target if you are sincere about wanting to change things. Attacking fans is pointless, they won't change their opinions just because you moan about them.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Making generalised comments about large groups of people isn't less insulting or derogatory, it's just bigoted instead of directly personal. Your hypocrisy is lessened not in the slightest by the specific phrasing of your site rules that would seem to make it OK for you to say whatever you like while holding others to some different standard. You're not holding up a mirror, you're quite obviously holding up your own distorted view of who you think people are. That we would react to it is not indicative of your mystical ability to touch a nerve or get to the root of our emotional conflicts. It's quite simply that you're being incredibly disrespectful and people generally don't seem to like that. Nothing complicated about it JK: you're being an ass and people respond to you in similar fashion, at which point you just censor, delete and ban as you see fit like some petulant child. You don't like it when people direct some of your disgraceful vitriol back at you so you "take your ball and go home".

    ReplyDelete
  65. How many times has Suarez received a yellow card for diving in PL? I remember Ashley Young getting at least 1 yellow card for diving when playing for Villa (think it was against Arsenal) (as well as getting booked for diving in a England game but that was not PL of course).

    ReplyDelete

You seem to tell people frequently to take their opinions elsewhere (to RAWK, for instance).

And you still haven't responded to my challenge about past LFC glory attained through cheating. Did you refuse to celebrate on ethical grounds?

  69. to eradicate all kinds of cheating people need to become ultimate grasses and have the morale courage to stand up and say it was me 'I grassed you up because i thought it was wrong'. please feel free to go into your local pub find the benefit cheats, drug dealers, robbers and any other person who cheats the system.  blow them up to the coppers for cheating the system and then have the morale courage to say it was me. to be fair if you did do that I would deffo come to your funeral and hang a picture of you on my wall as you would be my hero!!! lol
In truth you will probably be like the majority including me who dont like it but will do nothing to stop it, so thus become apart of the problem!!!

    ReplyDelete
  70. We'll speaking out against something is the first step to stopping it mate.. You then get a general concensus and you act on in..

Nobody can argue that they haven't been angered and embarrassed by the rising tide of 'wussyism' in our game..

And this apathy from supporters is only making it worse..

If every supporter screamed at there own players for diving or play acting instead of the oppisition players this would be cleared up in no time.

    Think about it...

    ReplyDelete
  71. Cheating, to my mind, is breaking the laws of the game and not being punished, like using simulation to win unwarranted free kicks. What Suarez did was dealt with and penalised within the laws of the game; he got his ban, Ghana got a penalty which would have sent them through most of the time

    ReplyDelete
  72. sorry, you are defending Suarez, he doesn't feel any more or less contact than Young and both are cheats.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Why is one form of cheating having to be better than another?

    ReplyDelete
  74. Fact is, though, some people feel justified in cheating the system for various reasons. Let's face it, few people, apart from the extremely rich, are able to cheat the system more than the system cheats them. Football is slightly different, not life and death and should be a haven from the cheating in every day life, not an extension of it.

The idea that people need to be perfect to condemn unethical behaviour simply encourages more unethical behaviour.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Cheating is the act, not the consequence. What does whether you are punished or not have to do with it? If Suarez handballs on the line, or bites someone, or calls someone a name that they don't like, is he only cheating if he doesn't get caught? So if the ref had not seen the handball, and thought the keeper saved it, or if he sent off the wrong guy, is Suarez cheating, even though it is for the same act?

    ReplyDelete
  76. The usual unsupported, with facts, statements coming out. Funny, they often do when Suarez comes into the conversation.

  77. I commend Jamie for highlighting the cheats in football, including liverpool players..i think he went over the top with suarez, as i dont think deliberate handball is cheating, neither admiting you would take one for the team.
However both Suarez and Downing have dived, along with Gerrad in the past, maybe one or two others, Young is a disgrace, at least Fergie highlighted it. so is Rooney, Malouda, most of spain and italy players.

Diving though to get another player sent off or a penalty is a complete disgrace, i back Jamie for bringing this up LFC or no LFC player..a dive is a dive.

Didier Drogba is by FAR the worst diver in the modern game..him and sergio busquets and real madrids pepe are disgusting cheats..to watch drogba 6ft2 or what ever fein injury, roll all around on the floor is a disgrace.

I had to laugh the other day when pepe went down with the most theatrical dive imaginable, pretending to be seriously hurt, when Arbeloa just walked over to him and dragged him up off the floor!! ha ha totally humiliated the cheat by his own team mate..;)

Too be fair Sky commentary has made a real effort to high light the cheating on spanish coverage..i just wish they would follow that up on premiership coverage..they could have' cheat of the week' and really put the spotlight on them and embarrass them.

Video evidence should be brought in for proven diving by judges...for those who say its 'subjective' and ' you cant always tell exactly' BS...having a ref full stop call fouls is subjective anyway...having a video evidence then FA give out 5 match bans would soon stop this nonsense in 1 season flat.

  80. None deluded United fan8:31 pm, April 20, 2012

Just like to say the author and the people replying are all seriously special. I take it none of you ever saw football of old, where cheating involved kicking the living shit out of other players, taking bungs ( Liverpool will know all about this one considering your history ) and much much more. Now the only reason it wasnt well known back then is because there wasnt 50 Sky cameras at every game recording every single incident. Football today is the best its ever been, its now a professional sport played by athletes and at a pace none of us would ever be able to handle. Try running as fast as possible and then have someone just knock you ever so slightly. See if you stay on your feet.

Anyone with sense knows full well that the fast you go, the easier it is to be knocked off course.

Who allowed this retard on the internet?

  81. A great post, &many good points and ideas.
Cheat of the week would be fantastic.
The only problem here is that much more focus is given to the bigger teams, im sure that teams near the bottom have equally embarrassing occasions.

  82. It was a tongue in cheek comment! And yes Ferguson did admit to that but he also said-
"But he definitely brought him down. There was contact. He has bought the fact that Ashley jinked inside him", that was the basis for my remark!
As or Suarez, sacking him would be harsh, but I do agree with your general views.
