Confirmed: Pep Guardiola quits Barcelona. Next stop Anfield? Yes please!

According to news on Barcelona's official website, Pep Guardiola has confirmed he will leave the Nou Camp at the end of the season.

In a three hour meeting last night, Guardiola informed club president Sandro Rosell he would not be renewing his contract, and he spoke with his players this morning.

At a press conference earlier today, Rosell expressed his 'eternal gratitude' to the coach for the 'happiness' he has given the club, and labelled Guardiola 'the best manager in the history of the club'.

Here is a video of the Press Conference:

Obviously, every top club in the world will be interested in Guardioa, and hopefully Liverpool will pull out all the stops to make him the Reds next manager. Many people may scoff at that suggestion but Guardiola has already won everything possible in the modern game, so going to another moneybags club that can easily win trophies doesn't seem like much of a challenge.

At Liverpool, he could truly build something from the ground up and create a lasting dynasty, something that may be appealing to the Spaniard.

FSG need to drop everything now and make signing Guardiola the club's number one priority. Would you like to see the Spaniard at Anfield?

  1. Him over Kenny any day of the week. Doubt he will come though!

  2. Please NO. He is a good manager but has no experience outside La Liga, he will turn out to be another AVB. The brains behind Pep is Tito Vilanova, who is now the coach of Barca.

  3. Fully agree... I also think that Guardiola, while being great with attacking play may not have the balance quite right when it comes to defence (see Chelsea game)... this would prove a huge problem in the EPL

    ReplyDelete
  4. no chance - why would he come to Anfield???? talk about a step down for him. We are no longer a top european team, and not likely to be for years. Chelsea and Citeh would be far far more appealing to him unfortunately

    ReplyDelete
  5. such an uneducated comment. Do you know Barcelona's training regime, everyday lives, etc.?
Ugh, I hate when people make stupid comments like this that makes no sense.

  6. The last La Liga manager that came our way was Benitez, and he wasn't half as successful as Pep, and is one of the most admired managers by many. I think Pep should be our best bet to get Liverpool to play attractive football and win trophies.
I doubt he'll want to come, but if he does, it can really kickstart a new LFC reign of dominance on european football.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Right. Liverpool should reject one of the greatest club managers in the history of the modern game because he allegedly doesn't get the 'balance right' defensively?

    *shoots self*

  8. the perfect choice!

    ReplyDelete
  9. Why would he come to Anfield, because of the fact that it would be a challenge. It is all well and good going to a club that are already established and in top flight european football, but I sincerely believe that Guardiola would relish the opportunity to revive the fortunes of a once great team and return the club to its former glory. The bloke obviously needs some time out to recharge his batteries so why not leave Dalglish in charge for three or four months and then let Pep take over the helm then? This is a great opportunity for LFC and FSG to put the wheels back on the wagon !

  10. get him and go for Jo Cruyff as DOF!

  11. i cant believe i am about to say this, but i think im agreeing with you for the first time ever...

  12. all the reports suggest he wants one year out of the game, refresh and see more of his family.

But would love to see Kenny get one more year and pass it on to him.

Hopefully the fact we've got Rosell managing our reserves may mean he visits us to see his friend. If he likes the set up you never know.

United, Chelsea and possibly City, Spurs and Arsenal will also be thinking similar though. Will depend if he prefers to be in London for starters.

    ReplyDelete
  13. So he'd continue to be one of the greatest managers in the english league with the current Liverpool squad too then seen as he is at the best team, full of the best players in the world in the spanish league... but of course!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Would be nice the longer we leave it the greater the task , me thinks

    ReplyDelete
  15. Pep took over some of the best players in the world in a league that's suited for playing attacking football and built the worst defence in Europe. If Liverpool had just Messi alone this year with his scoring record Liverpool would've been title contenders. I doubt Pep could win like he did at Barcelona with Liverpool.

  16. Tough decision Kenny or Pep, I think the majority of reds supporters me included would like Kenny to stay on at least for nxt season, lets see how he builds the team, see who comes in and goes out, if there is a vast improvement and I mean a major push for 4th because lets admit it to win the Prem or be in with a shout is a few years away and the teams above will av strengthened again, as long as we improve each season then there is a chance we might be successful in the EPL. If 2 cups are won this season then that's a  massive step forward - nxt season we'll av 4 trophy's on the go so we'll need a bigger and better squad to what we av at the moment. We know the League position is crap and its depressing but I honestly think Kenny will make the EPL his main target and bring in the players needed to push us there, anyway lets see eh, oh and any comments on this TV doc thing for FOX???

    ReplyDelete
  17.  Firstly he is leaving to have a year out of which you fail to mention. Secondary he  is leaving the best team in spain will not be short of offers. Chelsea are after him and can match his ambition with huge transfer funds and pay him a huge yearly salary. Utd may want him to. We havn`t got a chance and if im honest he would struggle the first few years to win the league unless he brings  messi with him. A very  good manager but  never had a perfect team. Predicted chelsea would beat them along with Liverpool and Munich last  year. People thought I was mad. They  lack the ability to have an ariel threat in atttack and that to me was their down fall. The inability to turn to plan b when chasing a game. Daglish will be  here next season whether u like it or not so  lets get use to it. If he messess up hell be sacked.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Every team in the world will be a step down. All it would take to get us back in the champions league would a top class goalscorer. Look at Newcastle, no real world beaters but they have threat in the striking positions and teams that play them know that if Ba or Cisse get chances then they'll most likely score. Something that can't be said about us, because lets face it, in front of goal this season has been embarrassing. Dominating games and not getting results has effected the teams confidence. If Guardiola came in and signed two proven goalscorers we would be able to compete again, add a year under the belt of our recent signings and hopefully they should be better (couldn't be any worse).

  19. Please come Pep, and you can turn Suso into Messi-lite.....the potential for greatness is there with your nurturing skills.

    ReplyDelete
  20. No guarantee he would continue his success but he has recent success, huge recent success. So of course, he is worth the risk

    ReplyDelete
  21. No side is perfect. The best team since Saachi's Milan at least. Fantastic achievement.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Imagine the pulling power he would bring in terms of players.

    ReplyDelete
  23. 'worse defence in Europe'

Yes, the way they play flatters their defence and defence has holes in it because of the way they play but to say their defence is the worse in Europe is pushing it, imo.

Yep, Messi has a great record but I doubt he would have a similar record at Liverpool, we have a attacking threat that is nowhere near Barca's level.

    ReplyDelete
  24. i would love him to come to LFC! Kenny needs to step down and help the club by stepping down, his football is olden time football guardiolas is modern this is what we need!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Borrell, you mean?

    ReplyDelete
  26. The owners apparently want to continue the 'young British' recruitment policy, I doubt Pep's style of football would work all that well with British players.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Oh yes Guardiola is really going to make an impact in the Premier League because Liverpool FC has XAVI, INIESTA, MESSI, ALVES, PUYOL, VILLA, SANCHEZ type players for him to manage.

I very much doubt he has the experience and would be able to work with players like ADAM, DOWNING, HENDERSON, CARROLL, SPEARING and there are definitely a few more I can mention.

The club does not have the players in the squad to be able to play anywhere near Barca's style of football and bare in mind this was the only club where he's had success - i'm sure most managers in the world would be able to successfully manage Barcelona.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Don't forget Liverpool are after Txiki Bergiristain his old, Director of Football at Barca, we also have 2 of his friends at our academy, Rodofo Borrell and Pep Segura.................It is not impossible at all, FSG have the deep pockets if the right person is available!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  29. well yeah, if he came over and brought over Messi and David Villa with him then "job done"!! ... is this likely though!?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Yes... Im sure he will make more sense in his signing should he become the manager..

    ReplyDelete
  31. Yep, we don't have the players for his style of football.

Yep, had a lot of quality at his disposal at Barca but very few managers could get a team playing in that fashion and yet be so successful, regardless of the quality of players.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I would take him over kenny any day of course but we dont have the players pep had at barca, so its difficult to do the same what hes done with barca, unless he brings in half of barca's squad here, but yes never mind that i would take him as long as kenny leaves, right now any manager is better than kenny in my eyes

    ReplyDelete
  33. He may "possibly" come to Liverpool becasue of his EGO! Take a club with an exceptional past at a low point and turn it around to be a major competitor. Question is how much money would he want to spend on players to do it and can the club afford that "risk".

    ReplyDelete
  34. For once, Jaimie, you are 100% spot on!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yes, it be would be great if Pep could come but don't expect instant success. He will need to be given time to re-build and of course, will need adequate financial backing. It will have to be at least a 2-4 yrs project.

At Barca, he was with them for a long time, so, its easier for him to take over and score instant success. They were already playing the passing game and the required players were  already there.

Not sure if he would succeed if he came, but its a good bet with his proven track record.

    ReplyDelete
  36. No. He's part of a well established system in Barcelona. He might fail at any other team. We dont know how good he is as a manager until leaves Barcelona.

    ReplyDelete
  37. do you really believe that?
i'd say your brains are behind you in your arse.

    ReplyDelete
  38. gurdiola has a great record of bringing through players from the youth set up aswell.something that we should be doing since we have borrell and are investing in the under ager players.

    ReplyDelete
  39. where was rafa's experience when he joined us?
mourinho won the league with chelsea after coming from porto.
i love uneductaed football fans like you.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I was talking about realistic signings my friend. The De Jongs, Soldado's and Martinez's of this world.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Would Love Guardiola but he will be taking a year out of the game. So Sorry,Anti-Dalglish so called LFC fans, you are stuck with him for another season and the way we have played this season and winning Carling and FA cup he fully deserves another year. End Of.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Why not LFC has a pass and move system but may not have the players to play that system to effect regularly so if he is willing to come and the owners are interested then it will be good for Liverpool . I can't see why he wont succeed anywhere else but we'll never know if he would like the challenge i only wish he would

    ReplyDelete
  43. I know, I was being facetious.
In my view, the problem that any new manager will face is getting rid of the poor signins already at the club - if they cant be shifted then the new manager will struggle to bring his own players in, and I think Pep would recognise that and think it too much of a ball ache. Unfortunatley, we are actually a mid table team now, miles and miles from challenging the top teams and the "project" to regain top0 statu will take too long and people aren't given any time theses days

    ReplyDelete
  44. He is more likely to be going to replace AF in retirement!

    ReplyDelete
  45. He is only as successful as the squad he controls, in his current case Barcelona questionably the best team in the world. Are you genuinely suggesting his playful passing game will succeed in the EPL with the talents of Spearing, Shelvey and Henderson? On top of that He'll probably play Lucas in the defence.

I'm amazed that people laud these top managers! What would they be like managing a medioca club? Most managers would do well with the likes of the players he has at his disposal! I'd like to see these so called top managers in charge of the likes of Tranmere or Wigan, whose manager has done a great job !

Barcelona's president IS our reserve team manager, I thought that was common knowledge lol

Come to think about it Carra still plays, Downing, Henderson and Kuyt get regular playing time, Carroll is signed for £XXmillion (can't bring myself to type it) and Kenny is still manager.  Rosell running the reserve team doesn't actually look that out of place in the wonderful magical world that is Liverpool Land.

Tough decision Kenny or Pep? Really?  I expected the rest of the post to be sarcastic but nope..... straight as an Arrow.

I take my hat of to you

    ReplyDelete
  49. I really hope FSG gets Pep. I mean Anfield would be a perfect project for him...hope he can turn our sunday league stuff into Champions League brilliance!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Not gonna happen. All the top managers are waiting for SAF to either retire or pop his clogs.
Besides, it's one thing inheriting a world class squad. It's another thing completely trying to build one, as Kenny has proved... twice.
I'd rather see what he can do when he has to do some work somewhere else.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I think Liverpool have an excellent chance of capturing Guardiola. He is always complimenting Liverpool FC even though our Man Utd and London Clubs obessed press NEVER mention this. Liverpool FC just need to say to Pep then when he considers he is ready to come back into the game, to consider LFC and open talks. I bet Liverpool have a better chance than ANY other English side of getting him for their next manager!!

    ReplyDelete
  52. True but some are more complete than others. The Liverpool team of the old was more effective all round but barca may be better to watch.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Quite a few teams that are 'all-rounders' but very very few in the history football push the attacking limits the way Barca have done, which is what makes them so special. Thus, why they are held by the majority as the best side in last decade or two by a mile.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I'm not convinced by him yet.
Against Chelsea, he instructed his team to stick to the same tactic despite it was clear that it was not working. Liverpool tend to drop points against teams who park the metaphoric bus in front of their goal, so I doubt that it would be a beneficial move for LFC.

Barca also have a pretty low conversion rate and squander a lot of chances like LFC, but they have better players which make it less serious because they create other chances to score. A transition overnight is not going to happen at LFC which will allow us to play like Barca. The fact that Guardiola only commits yearly makes me sceptical whether he would be willing to take on a long-term project at LFC. At LFC, that is exactly what is needed. Short term managers like Muourinho and Guardiola are better left at their respective clubs.

The quality of a manger is best shown when a he manages to do a tactical masterstroke when the team is struggling. Guardiola failed misrebably to do so against Chelsea and against Real Madrid.

If I had to chose another manager, it would be Benitez again. Having said that, I want Dalglish to be given another year in charge. In doing so, he can rectify the errors committed and put us on track again. I trust him.

  57. where do you get this shite from its just made up

    ReplyDelete
  58. Is Tito Vilanova the brain behind Barcelona? Why do you say that?

    ReplyDelete
  59. liverpool was pushing for the 4th spot this season and they why we r going to finish around 7th or 8th place..may be if we were pushing for the  title this year probably we could have finished around 4th..its obvious we need a change in our mentality..we shouldnt target for the second best..we need to target for the best and see where it takes us..we need a coach who can make the players believe that we can push for 1st spot and we are good enough to do so

    ReplyDelete
  60. Wonder what you will say if he plays Spearing in defence?!

    ReplyDelete
  61. I live in Barcelona and it is said Pep wants a challenge. Making a success of Liverpool would certainly be a challenge, all right. Sadly, I can't see it happening. But I couldn't see Cheslea beating Barcelona either.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I said 'apparently'. I never said it was the truth, hence the use of 'apparently'. This was based on what Gillespie said as highlighted by JK's article.

I would say 'nice try' but I don't want to lie.'Used by speakers or writers to avoid committing themselves to the truth of what they are saying' = apparentlyNo need to say 'thanks', just show it in your future understanding of 'apparently'.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Shame KK let things go in the twilight years of his last reign at the club but luckily for him, Souness took all of the flak.

    ReplyDelete
  64. '.... is a world class manager my friend. any manager is who can take a team to two european cup finals in 3 years and make a club  rank or seeded number one in europe for a good period of time.title or no title...'
This could easily be said about Guardiola but of course, you said it about Rafa ;)

Just a little cheeky and maybe somewhat irrelevant take on your comment

    ReplyDelete
  65. A mediocre manager going to a great club like that may lead to some domestic trophies but it takes a great manager to lead the club to 2 Champions League victories in 3 years.

    ReplyDelete
  66. You are spot on here. I can't think of a viable reason why Guardiola wouldn't be the capture of the decade. Doesn't he also speak some English already?

    ReplyDelete
  67. 2 Champions League Titles and 3 league titles in 4 years. He made Barca who they are today. I'd take him over 50 Kenny's. He is young and has won big trophies recently.

    ReplyDelete
  68. 2 major fails in 4 years, and you think that is bad? Kenny does that in one week.

    It's a no brainer.

    ReplyDelete
  71. This is a NO-BRAINER! Not only would he vastly improve Liverpool's offensive tactics, he would also be able to attract top draw players to the club! Another bonus is his close attention to academy players- he loves Liverpool's academy and would almost certainly utlilise it more than Dalglish ever has

    ReplyDelete
  72. exactly right- aim for the sky and you will hit the ceiling. aim for the ceiling and you won't even leave the ground.

    ReplyDelete
  73. pie in the sky,hes been bombed off because he lost the league , and champions league hes shit, keep kenny.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Yes Yes Yes Pep Guardiola for Liverpool!

    ReplyDelete
  75.  I like him and the brand of football he plays, but he did  not have a plan B when Chelsea had all their players behind the ball. That shows how limited his tactical strength is. And if most of the EPL team decides to do the same as Chelsea, then we will get frustrated with the results.

Remember, he is benefiting from the Youth program that Barcelona has. If he were to succeed he needs to sort out that part as well as needing money immediately for next season.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I honestly think that Liverpool have a genuine chance of capturing Pep, if they pull out all the stops. If anyone can do it, I think FSG can. Whether they will...

Kenny said he put himself forward originally due to lack of quality candidates. If that is true, then surely he will step aside for Guardiola.

I actually think that one of the biggest obstacles is the fact that he would probably rather live in London.

    ReplyDelete
  77. But look at the players at barcelona and look at the players at liverpool

    ReplyDelete
  78. Whilst chealsea are still in the hunt for a mananger and they can offer london living and lots of cash, then i think they will be top of the list, but if they win the CL then Matteo will get his chance!!

  79. Spaniard, we're not miles form being a top team,  we have been one key player short all season and that, as Zulu has pointed out, is a top class finisher. Simple as.
We have been making BUCKETS of chances all season but failing to convert them, THAT is why we are in 8th place.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Maybe not but those 30 smacks on the frame of the goal might have gone in and then where would we be?

Stop being so negative. You picked up on what Patrick said but he, too contradicted himself with a wayward comment.

I might be the only one left on this site but I have actually enjoyed, for the most part, the way we have played this season and I enjoy watching the team play. I just wish we had converted more of the tons of chance we've made.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Rafa did this with us, he also won 2 La Liga titles with cash strapped Valencia. If he had gone to either Barca or Real with the finances available, he would have been on Spanish postage stamps and money. Guardiola is good but he has had the luxury of some of the best players in the history of the game and a decent transfer kitty to boot. It pains me to say this but Ferguson won a European trophy with Aberdeen, a small Scottish club with virtually no money and an entire team of Scots, beating, among others, Bayern Munich & Real Madrid along the way.
As much as I don't like him, you have to respect his achievements. I must go and beat myself now.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Pep Segura & Rodolfo Borrell ARE at Liverpool, Tom Werner said in his interview earlier in the month that we "can compete financially with ANYONE in world football".
I cannot confirm or deny the first statement but, as Meat Loaf once said "Two out of three ain't bad".
Now, rather than you sit there and mouth off at a perfectly reasonable (and mostly proven statement) why don't you just leave the thinking to the big boys.

    ReplyDelete

  88. How was our game with Chelsea? Apparently we won and brought the FA cup back to Liverpool!

    ReplyDelete
  89. A little harsh isn't it? There are faults but hardly "Sunday league stuff" I would say.

    ReplyDelete
  90. the director of football thing is made up to suit silly little people like you who like to fantasize that people like guardiola would come to liverpool. i will let the big boys think because mostly the thoughtpatterns you have are complete and utter nonsense.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Such a naive and ignorant football fan what do you call olden time. Sometimes i read some of the comments and feel sorry for some of the fan. Football is not like going to the market and but groceries. It takes time to build a winning and sustaining your status. What all of you KK haters think success is bought wrong its build. KK is surely building something which many of you don't see coz you're so engrossed in buying success. Which manager buys 6players and all start in the team and the team performs. We need another season for our players to settle in then we can move forward. Apart from Carrol and Downing all KK's signings will come good but please not in one season coz the best EPL players all came good in their second and third season but certainly the first season.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Borell left Barca a very unhappy man coz he wanted the Barca job after Rijkaad left but Pep took the job what makes you think he'll be happy when Pep is ahead of him again.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  96. You are the idiot. pep guardiola should be the number one signing we make. At least he wont buy lots of british shits for overinflated price like dalglish.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Maybe you never heard of Newcastle then. They bought as much players as liverpool, maybe more and guess what? Their players unlike ours did not need time to adapt to the league even though they are not british...Newcastle is right now above us and fighting with the likes of chelsea and tottenham for 4th spot while we on the other hand are fighting against the likes of fulham, west brom and sunderland for to stay in the top ten.  Stop defending dalglish this is getting ridiculous now. The guy has no excuse. he was given a huge cheques to buy players that would make us qualify for champions league but he failed miserably. he should go period! Alan pardrew had not even half of our transfer kitty but managed somehow to build a team that is already one foot in champions league.

    ReplyDelete
  100. I said 'apparently', so that doesn't necessarily mean I believe it. A pity you still haven't grasped the concept of 'apparently', even though I gave you the definition above. Speech marks or no speech marks, the point was obvious, just like your lack of understanding what 'apparently' means.

    ReplyDelete
  101. just pointing out your mistakes, as 'apparently', you are so correct all of the time........'apparently' not, dear boy.

    ReplyDelete
  102. haha, overrated as usual, most half decent managers could do well at barca. this man could not beat the 5-6 best team in our league, possibly the poorest chelsea team in 10 years. id rather raffa back

    ReplyDelete
  103. I wish some of you lfc would get real and stop defending kenny at every opportunity, yes the man is a legend and we will always remember what he has done for the club, but now is the time for him to move upstairs, possibly in the role of damien comolli? Bring in Pep, no he hasnt got messi, iniesta and co to work with, but his brand of football will work, and think of the pulling power for top class players he would have, Some of kennys signings have been ridiculous, 35mil for carroll???? what is that all about, newcastle saw us coming over the tyne LOL, anyway please FSG get pep here asap

    ReplyDelete

  105. If Kenny was in charge of Barca, he too would win 2 CL trophies in 3 years and he had shown that in the past when Liverpool was a dominant force in europe.
I would love to see Pepe at Liverpool but dont expect him to make us title contenders in one season.
I would like to see Kenny given one more chance next season.

  106. If he does take over Liverpool and doesn't manage to win anything, I would love to see what you have to say?
Mourinho is anytime better than Pepe. He has proven his credentials in different leagues.

  109. Bayern Munich is more likely to get him, although I would like to see him as manager of Liverpool!
