Benitez vs. Guardiola: Who would you prefer as the next LFC manager...?

As a recent survey on this site illustrated, there are many fans out there would happily see Kenny Dalglish sacked *before* the end of the season if it meant an immediate return for revered former manager Rafa Benitez. Clearly, Benitez still retains massive support amongst the fanbase, but if it was a straight choice between Rafa and fellow Spaniard Pep Guardiola, who would get the nod from fans?

The following question was posed in the aforementioned survey:

If there was an option to sack Dalglish with immediate effect and replace him with Benitez, would you support that change?

* Almost 4000 fans voted.

* 70% voted in favour of Dalglish being sacked before the end of the season to make way for Benitez.

Benitez is obviously popular amongst fans, but could he do a better job than Guardiola? The double-Champions league winner has enjoyed phenomenal success with Barcelona but he announced on Friday that he plans to leave the Catalans at the end of the season.

If it came down to a straight choice between Guardiola and Benitez for the Liverpool job, who would get your vote?

Why is Dalglish not an option?

I was a massive fan of Rafa and he never should have been given the chop when he did. But, he did and you can never go back. Give Dalglish another season to show he knows what he's about. If it doesn't work, then by all means i think he knows himself that he should step down.

You clearly know nothing about conducting surveys. Tell me: when the Government conducts a survey, do they interview every single person in a country?! No. Does that make the results less relevant? No.

Is the survey about Dalglish? No, so why would he be an option.

Also, this is your final warning: if you continue to snipe and hurl insults (as you have in several comments I've deleted over the weekend), you will be permanently banned.

To be fair I reckon Rafa is the best choice but apparently I reckon FSG will not consider him to be the best option as his total control of transfers etc. I would love Rafa to be given 50 million and come back to restore our hope of getting into the champions league the minimum. I dont think pep will be the right choice as he needs a break from football for a few months or up to a year.

Lets be honest guys it doesnt matter who has the most medals, success or etc the main thing rafa knew with the wrong management is that he can guide teams into champions league year in and out. Ok people will judge his last season but he was having war from day one with boardroom and no help at all and I reckon it took its toll in the last season. I understand its a pressure environment but sometimes you need that tap on the back from the top and I think he never got anything.

Image rafa with the money kenny got. I am sure he would have atleast invested in maybe 2 bad players but the rest might have all been atleast better technically and a wow player atleast. Rafa may have bought downing but atleast with rafa he would have got the boy scoring more and assisting more. Just check out rafa's analysis on his website. rafabenetiz.com

If the only option was not rafa or pep then we can try Jurgen Klopp or Marcelo Bielsa who currently manage borussia dortmund and athletico bilbao. Unproven but worth a shot

This is a veeeery interesting question. I can honestly say that if dalgish was replaced by benitez today it would be a sort of bittersweet moment, but i would like to see rafa return to Liverpool as manager more than any other available. But if guardiola is thrown into the mix it becomes a very tough decision.

First of all i would love Guardiola to come in as lfc boss, his record is amazing, he can handle pressure, the media, he knows howto win and most importantly he is a motivator as well as a good tactician which is a trademark of a great manager. i don't believe in all the talk people come up with claiming he couldn't replicate his success elsewhere.

Where the appointment would worry me is that i feel our next manager needs to be long term, to provide the stability that Wenger and Ferguson offer to their respective clubs and i see Guardiola as man who wants to take on challenges and conquer the top leagues before returning home to Barcelona.

Kenny will step down when he knows that he can't help. He is that type of person. That type of person is hard to find these day's. I believe in the King. He will do better and if we do win the FA cup then this has been and outstanding first year for the one and only KING in football.

Tornike Khomeriki said...

On the one hand, it's a very difficult question. Guardiola achieved some fantastic success, but with significant budget support and with an entirely different league, while Benitez had less trophies at Liverpool, but was budget-constrained compared to the former, and has the ability to beat significantly better teams while having to field inferior players.

On the other hand, Guardiola has stated he's going to take a break, so our next manager will probably be appointed before he's back. And if the only option is bringing back Benitez, I'd definitely support it. Benitez+Clarke+Kean should be a very good combination of tactical minds.

Zulu said...

Between the two it's got to be Guardiola. Produced the best club side I've ever seen.

Yxll said...

As much as I respect and admire Guardiola as a manager, Benitez knows Liverpool's way and proven himself that he is capable to attain success outside Spain. Everyone deserves a second chance, Kenny got his chance. Worst run of league results for 59 years, worst point tally in 10 years, worst goal scoring record in 10 years. Benitez should get his chance too. I still believe he has unfinished business in Liverpool.

Tapmeupalex said...

what about giving kenny time? lets be honest he inherited a team with average players, yes he overspent on british talent and aside from our finishing this season our performances have not been as woeful as the media have put out. Work in progress give him time. Ps Guardiola spent how much to assemble barcelona? Take Messi out of that team how much would they have won. If Kenny fails this year then yes Benitez would be my choice. Proven winner with very little funds.

Difficult to understand why after such a superb display at the weekend such a negative article appears re:KD (Indirectly) How many managers have guided their team to two domestic cup finals in their first full season!
Admittedly mistakes have been made this season, however some superb footballing displays have been produced and the footballing ethic has been restored! This is a team in progress and KD whilst making some occassional strange decisions has a right to another season at the least! It would be suprising but welcome to see some positive articles about KD!!!!

Well im starting to think that chelsea are right to sack managers if they are not performing it shows that they have standards I for one do not want us to take a HUGE risk by giving a manager that has guided us to our worst finish in 50 years we are loyal enough to let him finish the season it would be plain stupid to let him go on

Even Benitez would have success with the Barcelona squad.
The choice is a manager who had his chance and failed or a manager who won't stay more than three years and bails after a difficult (by Barcelona standards) season?
You can keep 'em both.

i believe that too (unfinished business), benitez is a world class manager but not only that, he actually loves and respects liverpool football club. i hope that he gets a second chance with our new ambitious owners and i can see happy days ahead

it doesnt matter really cause guardiola wont be coming. the debate is interesting though. i wonder how  Peps brand of football would fair in the prem league. i think it would fail its too pretty pretty and might not stand up to our tougher style. Wengers pass pass and pass again is great to watch but hasnt won much in recent times. IF and its a big if Dalglish does go i would like to see Rafa come back with Pako and Carra made assistant managers with a view to Carra becoming the next manager.

Simple_man67 said...

You didn't see the press conference then? He jacked it in BECAUSE of the pressure and he doesn't want to be anywhere for more than three years.
He didn't 'build' the squad, by the way, he inherited it. If anything, our reserve team coach had a bigger influence on assembling their squad.

for me someone not qualified to be manager in the whole if;-
1) sub player at the most 70min game played
2) not have spirit to decide match.. if player not perform dalglish & benitez never change that player before 70min game played
3) never give a youth player change. only give youth player change when 1st team player get injured

look at maurinho or guardiola;-
1) change even a star player in 1st half if player below par
2) can develop a youth player into a 1st team player.. look at pedro, basquet, callejon & antonio adan...have a change to play

It is true that it is the result that makes this guy disagree with the polling, but that every fan isn't interviewed does make the results less relevant.

What I am talking about is second chance. For the first 6 months of Kenny's reign, he shown us the signs of revival. But then, this season can be described as far from a progress. In fact, it is a retrogression. It is a major disappointment. I don't expect immediate success but certainly retrogression is utterly unacceptable especially considering the fact that we had spent so much money on getting players. Most importantly, his signings, his team selections, his tactics are always baffling and I think we all can agree that none of them work as planned. I appreciate his efforts and courage to come back Liverpool, his past success is remarkable indeed. But I'm not really sure whether he is the right man to guide us forward anymore.

Stevie was out and took time to get back into it. Kenny's tactics are far superior to rafa's if you ask me as a Liverpool fan I want to see attacking football in the "Liverpool" tradition and not rafa's counter attack anti-football that disillusioned Torres in the first place!!!!

The only problem with Guardiola is IMO that he took over a excellent team and carried on where Rijkard left. A bit like with KD first time round. It would b interesting to c him prove himself in another club. RAFA has proved himself with Valencia breaking up
RM and Barca that since he left for Liverpool nobody has even came close to wining La Liga again. Winning La Liga twice with Valencia and CHL with Liverpool it's good enough for me. So 4me RAFA BENITEZ. POR SIEMPRE.

Shut the fu*k up! Kenny Dalglish is the worst manager that Liverpool had in the last decade- facts. Nobody had spent more than 100 mil on players and finished on 8-this says all! He made Liverpool a midtable team, we have the mentality of a small team : score if you can and then stay in defence. THIS IS NOT LIVERPOOL!!! Also we won that poor cup against a championship team at penaltyes after Cardiff players missed most of it. We wont win the FA cause Chelsea is at the moment more better than us. Who the fu*k cares that we have beat them a long time ago? Nobody...Maybe the will have the last laugh, you never know. Even if we”ll won FA or not Kenny has to go, cause I see Liverpool on 7 next year. JUST BRING RAFA BACK. Guardiola is one of the best managers in the world, but he hasnt contact with english footbal. Now we need proven managers and that is Benitez. Bring him back and give him 30 mil funds for transfer. MAybe he”ll buy a good atacking midfielder and a tehnique right wing.

Definitely Pep over Rafa any day of the week....Makes me laugh how many posters veer off track during these debates and start chatting whatever they like without even addressing the topic...LOL.

Anyway, back on track :) I just wouldn't want to see Rafa's defensive and quite negative football again, people seem to forget how damn right boring we used to be under Rafa.....at least Kenny has tried to take off the shackles and let the players go forward.....

Pep would be ideal as a follow on from Kenny in theory.... both managers like to attack, bot managers are adovates of the pass and move football yet Pep has for sure taken it to a different level altogether at Barcelona, some of the football played their has been simply mesmerising......

How much of that is due to his timing and arrival at the Club and choce of players such as Messi etc is debateable.....

I must admit that he certainly appeals as an ideal candidate should we replace Kenny BUT im not so convinced that his accomplishment at Barca was mainly of his own doing......

Its a little bit like Mateo at Chelsea.......walks into the job good timing being a key factor IMO, strong squad of players with a few world class one's.....gets off to a positive start and things just seem to click for them.....i think the same could be said of Rafa also.....walked in at a good time.....things started to click....went on a nice run in the CL....and bobs your uncle...we win a major trophy....lucky??? Or genius???

I think a lot is down to luck tbh, timing is everything in life as it is in football.....

How good these managers REALLY are....only time will tell i guess, personally Rafa had plenty of time after his nice run of luck.....he nearly fucked it up in Istanbul IMO and he nearly did the same in the FA cup final......i was never THAT convinced about his "genius" tbh, i thought luck played a BIG part in why he managed to stay at the Club without winning a trophy for 4 years.....esp when we are considering sacking one who has won one......

Theoretically Pep would be my choice over Rafa for the reasons stated earlier, at least we wouldn't be going backwards in time re our style of play.....but if Kenny wins the Fa Cup then i'd say that should secure another season for him as manager, im sure FSG would not want to rock the boat and try to implement someone when the timing wasn't right....

Guardiola would have his work cut out at Liverpool,, his freeflowing mentality would mean something of a new look midfield with a bit different looking forwards(dont see Carroll fitting in there).  And since we spent over 100 mills last season with knowing results, it would probably take a manager of Guardiola's stature to have Fenway group even thinking of putting up a similar amount of money to invest in players.  And btw,, my personal believe is that Guardiola is going to take a break from managing at least for one season.
