Aldo and Barnes tell Kenny: Sign this £30m Madrid striker ASAP. Pipe dream?

During the January transfer window, Liverpool legend John Barnes urged the club to sign 'classic centre-forward' Gonzalo Higuain, a player who has been regularly linked to Anfield over the last year. It seems great minds think alike because another Reds legend, John Aldridge, shares that view, and has called on the club to snap up the Argentinean striker.

In an interview with TalkSport in January, Barnes said:

"Liverpool have to get a classic centre-forward, a number nine, who’s going to be a six-yard box player and they need to get one of really proven quality, someone like Gonzalo Higuain. He’s not playing at Real Madrid, if you get the ball in the box he can score, he can play outside the box and he’s the kind of player that Liverpool should be going for".

This week, Aldridge - who scored an 63 goals in 104 appearances for Liverpool - joined Barnes in recommending £30m-rated Higuain:

"Liverpool need a goalscorer. I don’t know who the club may have in mind but I like the look of Gonzalo Higuain at Real Madrid. He doesn’t play an awful lot at the Bernabeu but he would be brilliant for us. But would he come? Would Real release him? And how much would be cost?"

Jorge Higuain, the 24-year-old's father and agent, hinted in January that his son could leave if he was no longer needed at Madrid:

"When someone tells us we are not welcome at the club then I'm sure we will receive very good proposals. Regarding the rumours that other teams are interested in my son - nobody has gotten in touch with me."

In March, Jorge Higuain confirmed again that there was no contact from anyone, including Kenny Dalglish:

"No one has called us. Until we win the Champions League, we will not move. If they [Madrid] bring Aguero in then we will start to listen to offers".

Clearly, competing for the Champions League is vitally important to Higuain, and since Liverpool are not in the competition next season, the club's chances of signing the Argentinean seem slim.

  1. More than a spoonful of reality is needed when comments like this arise I think. If it is to be believed the "kitty" from Fenway will be £20M and the alleged sales some £8M at best. Here we have a call to spend £30M on one player......

  2. If the summer 'kitty' is indeed that paltry then we're f**ked. We have to keep up with the Citeh and Utds of this world otherwise we'll be left behind for good. What i'd like to see is the 25m from Warrior and the 20m from Standard Chartered be plowed straight into the first team with additonal funds from sales. So min 50m this summer. Probably won't happen but I believe IMHO that we still can attract good players without CL - we just need to pay them more again like when City were on the rise. One winger, a striker and a central defender is a minimum...

  5. No chance! If you were him, would you want to play with Charlie Adam and Jordan Henderson? The man's a proven winner who will have clubs queuing up for him. And is it true that there'll only be £20m to spend in the summer? If so, I don't have much hope for next season

  6. until we get back to the top table, we don't stand a prayer in signing players like him. unless we throw stupid money at the situation (which we are quite good at) then never.

  7. That is a very high amount for a player who is not even performing well. A great player valued at a much lesser amount is Jackson Martines who currently plays with Jaguares in Mexico. Anyone interested to see this guy should youtube him. He is incredible. He will be a perfect fit for LFC.

  8. Ur mad that's alot of money 4 a player who's not performing well he's 20times the player Carroll will ever be an he cost 35mill ha ha ha

  9. Where did you hear the name Jackson Martinez....? NewsNow is FULL of speculative journalism. He's gash....end of!

A video on youtube capturing a few minutes of "his best moments" does NOT form the basis for LFC to sign him, nor does it make him "incredible"

Last year we were linked with Bryan Ruiz....he's set the world alight at Fulham hasn't he...oops, forgot about that chip he scored...which makes him incredible doesn't it?

All last summer we were "linked" with Van Der Vaart....

Agents regularly ply journalists with snippets in order to generate activity & increased transfer fees....WAKE UP FELLER!!!!!

Soldado would be IDEAL for us and he may just sign for us given the chance....Higuian will not become a Liverpool player....trust me!

  13. FSG is water tight there is no way the media know how much LFC has to spend. The biggest factor with Higuian is not his £28m transfer cost but his wages, however Kuyt is one of the highest earners at the club so if we got him off the payroll and also Cole, Aqualani, Aurelio and Maxi we could afford Higuian. We would also need a winger or attacking mid but if you buy youngish player (Susaeta/Ramirez) they would only be on perhaps 60k a week max.

Fundamentlay Higuian will move to club where he play every game as he is sick of beinng on the bench whether that is PSG, Inter Milan or Liverpool...

  14.  unless we get rid of the deadwood IE cole and co...we wont be signing anyone for big wages...fsg have had there fingers burned once ...cant see them doing it again that's why there was no money in January..at most we may get a right winger....the problem we have is our squad players are on big coin that no one will match

  15. If Henry and FSG were true to form about implementing their Moneyball approach - supposedly the reason why they fired Commolli - there's no way Liverpool would buy Higuain.  Jackson Martinez however...

  16. Higuain is a terrific striker - can't see us landing him. But what a difference it would make if we did!

  17. Cannot see this deal happening. I expect Kuyt and Maxi to leave and be replaced by Gaston Ramirez and another young winger. Rasmus Elm to come in after Cole and Aquilani are off the books and a young striker to come in. Aurelio will also leave in the summer.

  18. could happen if we reduce the wage bill - i.e compensate higuain's wages by offloading cole, aqua man, kuyt, maxi etc. that would then leave space in the first team for our promising reserve players like sterling to get more minutes - which is what they need to improve. However, this is a long shot as offloading players on high wages like cole is a big challenge and then trying to get a player like higuain with no champs league is also near on impossible unless we can sell our plans to him. Prob best targeting players from teams that are not in champs league, but who are also promising like moussa sissoko from toulouse as lucas may take a while to bed back into the team. Who knows... fingers crossed for the summer and beyond. Can we sign a good finishing coach also lease FSG!!!
