Alan Hansen in scathing *hypocritical* attack on £23m striker. Fair?

Liverpool legend Alan Hansen is on the warpath again. Earlier this season, his repeatedly harsh criticism of Chelsea sparked an ongoing war of words with Andre Villas Boas, and along with former team-mates Graeme Souness and Mark Lawrenson, he's gleefully stuck the knife into Manchester City at every opportunity. The three-time European Cup winner was at it again today with a scathing critique of City striker Mario Balotelli.

In a particularly mordacious column earlier in the season, Hansen called Chelsea's Jose Bosingwa a 'terrible' and 'embarrassing' defender, who made David Luiz look like a 'world beater'. He also claimed that Luiz 'wouldn't know what a good position is if it was staring him in the face'.

Hansen, Souness and Lawro have also regularly attacked Balotelli and Carlos Tevez; indeed, only a couple of days ago, Lawro argued that Mancini should 'use and abuse' Tevez and then kick him out of the club at the end of the season.

It's funny how we never hear Kenny Dalglish's buddies publicly eviscerate Luis Suarez, a player who, throughout his career, has caused more damage than Tevez and Balotelli combined.

In his column for the Daily Telegraph today, Hansen was on Balotelli's back again, and some of his statements are so breathtakingly hypocritical, it's hard not to be amused. For example:

"He [Balotelli] has become a damaging distraction and Roberto Mancini must shoulder the blame for allowing the situation to develop to the point where the player is beginning to affect [the club]".

I didn't hear Hansen saying this kind of thing when Suarez was banned for making an abusive gesture at Fulham fans, or for his stupidity during the Patrice Evra fiasco. Hansen continued:

"Mancini has handled it badly because most top managers would identify a problem and get rid of the cause"

Never in a million years would Hansen say the same about Dalglish, even though the same applies: Dalglish handled the Suarez-Evra situation badly, and the club's reputation suffered as a result. Hansen added:

"You don’t need ‘characters’ like Balotelli who seem to want only to seek out confrontation with referees and opponents"

Suarez spends 89% of his time on the field arguing with referees, yet does Hansen argue that he should be kicked out of the club as a result?

Hansen went on to make the ridiculous argument that Balotelli would be 'culpable' if Mancini loses his job (!) How, exactly? As we are repeatedly reminded - especially by Hansen on 'Match of the Day' - football is a TEAM game, yet we're expected to believe that Man City's problems on the field are all down to one player?

Hansen can attack Balotelli till the cows come home, but it won't change one simple fact: Balotelli does what he's paid to do, i.e. SCORE GOALS, and in that regard, he has succeeded where Liverpool's expensive flops have spectacularly failed:

* Balotelli has 20 goals in 26 starts for Man City
* That's more than Carroll, Suarez, Kuyt, Henderson, Adam and Downing combined.
* Hansen laid into Balotelli despite the fact he score two more goals on Saturday.
* Balotelli is younger than Carroll, with less experience of English football, yet he still outscores him.

I'm not denying that Balotelli has problems, but it's just shameful hypocrisy from Hansen, Souness and Lawro to continually attack him and stay silent about Luis Suarez.

Like most LFC fans, I have great respect for Hansen, and I totally understand his allegiance to the club, but when is he going to stop ignoring Liverpool's slide into abject mediocrity?

I'm not suggesting that Hansen should suddenly come out and publicly eviscerate Liverpool, or that he should stop criticising other teams, but surely this kind of naked hypocrisy is unwarranted?

hansen will not upset dalglish, he is his friend and golf buddy. I am sure he knows that the alarm bells are well and truly going off at liverpool but he will sit on the fence and use mancity or others to detract from liverpools woes.

Is your 90% Suarez comment a bit exaggerated mate? Was it intended to be? Why?

Very good post mate. Hansen is a hypocrite of the highest order. A dinosaur who should be put out to grass before he embarrasses himself any further.

Allenvanwyk said...

Ah another attack on Suarez ...as if we don't understand the agenda by now....dear old Kanwar decides to hammer it home even if loosely disguised as a defence of Balotelli.. As if any LFC fan gives a flying bollock about Balotelli

Paul Walsh said...

Slow news day for you eh? God you must be bored to dredge this up. Can't help yourself having a go at Suarez can you...

Jaimie K said...

Out of the entire article, you focus on that?  Obviously, it's a figure of speech; I wasn't literally saying that Suarez spends 90% of his time on the pitch arguing with referees.

J Taute said...

Jamie As usual a crap article.

Jaimie K said...

Is Suarez not relevant here to Hansen's hypocrisy?  Why does Balotelli deserve public evisceration like this despite the facts he's scored 20 goals this season?

h8utd said...

if he wants to have a pop at balotelli,so what? does he play for us? no, so who cares?

Jaimie K said...

I've used Suarez to highlight Hansen's hypocrisy. It's called using an example to back up an argument.  Who else should I have used instead?

Jaimie K said...

I aim to please.

Jaimie K said...

You've missed the point. Why does Balotelli deserve *repeated* public attacks from the likes of Hansen and Souness?  Suarez's transgressions are far worse, yet they say nothing about him.

It's out of order (IMO)

Pete said...

Suarez performances if not finishing have been the highlight of a dreadful season. Along with many others I believe he was grossly mistreated by the FA enquiry (it was an unproven allegation and a political decision). Sure he goes down too easily ( but not in the same disgraceful Perch style) and I for one am pleased he's still passionate enough to care about arguing with referees given some of the players apparent nonchalance this season. I've not heard he's disruptive - in fact the other players seemed happy to wear shirts in support of him, (irrespective of whether you think that's a good decision at club level.

h8utd said...

it was mentioned earlier that hansen won't slate kenny or his work because of their history together, same for souness, they were the 'scottish mafia'. i am sure he has strong opinions on suarez, but you don't slate your 'family' in public. like it or not, they still consider themselves part of the lfc family. i totally agree with that sentiment. he is a paid pundit and is paid to give his views on subjects such as balotelli, this occurs because he causes more incidents week in week out than most players, so he gets more coverage.

Gary352 said...

Its one of those things in football. Some players get ridiculed in the media time and time again. Suarez and Balotelli are both victims. But the media like to pick on the foreign guys, because most foreign players don't read what is said in the newspaper or on the internet. Maybe thats why the media have such good things to say about British players, because they follow what goes on in the press, and it may effect their performances. Funny how not a word is said on the Terry and Ferdinand case. But the Suarez debate was fueled on and on until Suarez lost his marbles.

h8utd said...

i will also repeat, who cares,he isn't one of ours,it doesn't matter.

Patouz27 said...

good point. agree with u on this on. makes a change lol

Narh said...

What you surely mean is that the media pick up more on Balotelli as he's an easy target and it seems a bit dim. Add to this he plays for Utd's nearest rivals making sure a Utd band wagon media put the boot in when ever they can, the guy doesn't really do anything to get upset about. Most of what is printed is simply made up if you watch his recent interview. Welbeck is apparently the best thing since slice bread scoring 10 goals form 33 games. Yet Balotelli's apparently crap and no good, but 20 goals in 26 says it all really both are the same age, one of them gets to be called young with time to develop and a great prospect while the other well you know. I don't think Welbeck has scored more than once this year!

On Suarez he has caused the club big problems this year not only because of his form but financially with his actions, he needs to sort it out and fast.

h8utd said...

i think balotelli is harmless and is a bit of a character, but all in all i don't care if pundits want a pop at him. manure will always have the media fawning over them, just to keep in with taggart. suarez? whats done is done and good, bad or indifferent, he is what he is and the club will have the final say on him. unless he did something abhorrent in any of the last few games, i don't know what he needs to sort out? as i said whats done is done, move on!

That's the kind of insular thinking that has led Liverpool to become one of the most despised clubs in Europe this season. It's thinking like this that led to the shockingly bad handling of the Suarez-Evra situation.

h8utd said...

what kind of thinking? that i don't care what is written about opposition players? or that i and most other people accepted that suarez got punished and moved on from a bad situation?

PeterLFC said...

Why what did suarez do or say this week to make them talk about him. I think Hansen said things at the time about him, and on the lines of other flack he took. He is a pundit, this week balotelli was the player making the headlines, so he got it. Get over it I am a Liverpool supporter, that includes the club the manager and the players u Kanwar well I don't know where you sit.

Jaysus can't believe the abuse you're taking here. Excellent article been throwing stuff at the tv all season because of his comments. I'm a blue and balotelli does my nut in then makes everything okay again with a goal. Suarez is a sensational player and I don't think your having a go pointing out the obvious and most of his antics are out of frustration (playing with that Adam fat ****) The point is one wears blue one wears red and Hansen is such an ignorant twat he doesn't notice his bias.

RedSilver said...

How did Suarez act stupidly during the fiasco? All who researched the incident know that Suarez was persecuted to help FA's stance against racism(and to make a point against the Blatter man). Evra was believed due to being of a better character(such a brilliant guy that he ruined France's chances in the world cup). Oh yeh in this lovely and fair FA hearing, one of the judges held a season ticket for Manchester United, very fair isn't it? We the fans know that Suarez's only crime was daring to talk like a Uruguayan? How dare he? He should forget where he came from isnt't it and he should assimiliate with our good old English customs. Now who sounds racist?

Generally Dalgleish; with his smart-arsed TV interviews; his failure to see where the Suarez incident was leading (to the ridiculing of a much-respected club);  his poor buys and you have to admit, his ineffective management is in grave danger of sullying his previously unimpeachable reputation.  Great shame, I say.

OriginalChan said...

Yep, Balotelli has been a embarassing liability at times for them and has been a waste of time in quite a few games such as the Swansea. They put up with it because he is Mancini's special project.

A pity that Lawro and Hansen aren't as damning (should be more damning about AC, all things considered (such as price) as Balotelli has had some very good moments of brilliance as well as better productivity) about Carroll but I guess they don't want to upset their pal KK eh.

Hansen has constantly had a go at Balotelli throughout this season and seems to have it in for him. Rather distasteful to say the least, especially when he is rather tame and reluctant to do the same on Suarez and Carroll.

spud said...

Hansen encouraged the FA to give Vincent Kompany a lengthy ban for frightening Nani in the derby, knowing full well he would miss two games against Liverpool. It must be the first time in his career as a pundit that he's sided with an attacker. That's dangerous stuff, in my view. And indefensible.

To be fair, most 21 year old footballers don't act like Balotelli, even I get the principle of your point in terms of maturity.

Simon said...

Balotelli is totally immature. He makes a spectacle of  himself in most games

He is obviously talented BUT

Ridiculous red cards, throwing tantrums because he believes he's better than his team mates at taking free kicks, inviting controversy at every opportunity

Mancini says he doesn't trust him - Even his manager doesn't know what he will do next

Why don't you do a chance per goal, that excludes penalties on Balotelli? He misses bucket loads of chances, helps when you have real service from Silva, Johnson etc

Mourinho didn't get on with him. Mourinho gets the best out of everyone......

So Hansen is supposed to burn a decades long friendship with Dalglish? For what? To create a tabloid frenzy?

Yes, it's hypocritical. It all is. Football is

These former pros are all too close to the game, Neville won't criticise United but has been better than I expected him to be, Alan Smith said that Koscielny was "clever" when he man handled Carroll in 86th minute against Liverpool - could well have been a penalty - how is that clever???? DAFT

The best pundit is John Giles, podcast him on Off the Ball, Newstalk 106 every thursday. He says it like it is

He slates Balotelli also.......

Thank goodness Balotelli doesn't play for us

Simon said...

Dangerous??? PLEASE

What's laughable is that Hansen earns £40k per appearance on BBC and he rarely says ANYTHING of substance

Ricky Martinez said...

Why would you not expect them to be pro Liverpool and pro Kenny? As far as Balotelli goes, despite his 20 goals I would not want him playing for Liverpool. I also think Suarez should be sold. At the end of the day though, it's only my opinion.

Mitzsu said...

I actually think that Suarez has got off very very lightly this season and Jamie is right to point out the hypocrisy, funnily enough i was reading another LFC forum earlier and they were ranting about each others hypocrisy........

Really glad that Jamie is taking this stance becuase i found the Evra Suarez affair the most depressing worrying and hugely embarrasing episode in all my time as a LFC supporter....which is 30 odd years......

I still cannot put into words how i feel without feeling immense anger and betrayal that it was allowed to just roll on like a steamroller....even got banned for not following the party line taken by that particular forum....which was to back Suarez....and to back Kenny....regardless of whether it was right or not........................

Hugely disruptive to our season and set the Club and manager back in more ways than one.....our profile as the Club that many football fans have a certain affection for was simply smashed to pieces....and to cap it all off the fans got the bit between their teeth and decided to run with it like it was some major conspiracy to fcuk us up or something......

Utter madness, and for Hansen & Co to attack Balotelli for some of his antics etc i agree with Jamie it just typifies what is wrong with this Club.........

Oh to have eyes to see ourselves as others see us......

Well in Jamie, this site is probably the only place where Liverpool "refugees from the storm" can re assemble and put our views across without being intimidated and alienated... by UBER FANS.....with AGENDA'S......

LFC means a lot of different things to a lot of different people but it doesn't mean shit if we can't hold our hands up when we are clearly in the wrong and show some humility and respect for each other whilst keeping open hearts and minds and welcoming different views which are discussed in a democratic and civilised manner.

Suarez IMO for his crimes this season has eclipsed Ballotelli and his.....we should keep our own house in order before arrogantly criticising others....

Vinnie O'Brien said...

"Suarez spends 90% of his time on the field arguing with referees"
Exaggerate much Jamie?

Jaimie K said...

Hey Mitzsu - Totally agree with your points re Suarez. I feel the same anger as you over the handling of the Evra situation, and one of the most depressing things about it was the deluded - but typical - fan reaction, i.e. Evra is the devil; Suarez is the wrongly accused innocent; it's all a big conspiracy against the club perpetrated by Darth Ferguson, and blah blah blah.

It's hardly surprising though considering LFC's stance on the issue; the fans took their cue from the belligerent, misguided reaction of Dalglish and the club, who most definitely did not lead by example.

I also know exactly what you mean about the censorship that is rife on other LFC forums; it makes me sick, and it's one of the reasons I started this site in the first place.

I was banned from TIA in 2004 for criticising Steven Gerrard (in a fair, non-personal manner). It's just ridiculous.

As you suggest, I want this site to be a place where fans (LFC and non-LFC) can express any view they want without being attacked, ridiculed and/or censored.

Back to Suarez - totally agree with your last sentence; that's the point I was trying to get across. It's embarrassing for LFC legends to repeatedly slam Balotelli for when Suarez has done much worse.

Jaimie K said...

Yes, you're right. My bad. I've just edited the article and changed the figure to more accurately reflect the amount of time Suarez spends arguing with referees.

Vinnie O'Brien said...

I seem to have been misled. But unfortunately its more like a Chelsea supporters forum. Some of the things posted about our manager and players on here is disgusting sometimes.
Its a real shame JK, because your articles are well written and well presented but it sometimes seems that yourself, and a lot of people that post here love putting the boot in when it comes to LFC.

Jaimie K said...

Simon - if I did a chance per goal comparison between Suarez and Balotelli, do you really think that Suarez - with his 8% conversion rate - would come out on top? Balotelli's might be low, but I sincerely doubt that it will be lower than Suarez.

To be honest, I would take red cards, tantrums and eccentric behaviour and 20+ goals a season over a player who did the most damage to LFC's reputation in 120 years of history.

I think the main thrust of the article was to criticise AH, but the more interesting debate is around Suarez.  I defended him for his "negrito" comment which was not an intention to be racist, and a lot less offensive than weasel Evra's comments that provoked the incident.   But on the pitch Suarez is not a team-player.  Our midfielders are obsessed with him and it annoys me to watch SG pass up on the chance to go thru the middle rather than look wide to find Suarez.  The effect of Suarez on team spirit is now a negative.  Against Wigan he selfishly tried to foul the ball into the net rather than let nature take its course.  That incident had a 50-50 chance of being a goal without his cheating interference.  He plays for himself not the team.

Then we come to Carroll...he disgusted me on Sunday. After amazing me with skill and pace I did not believe he possessed he got himself into a great position to score....and he then CHOSE to take the cowards way out.
I think the Suarez effect is spreading and now it seems our players play fo rfouls and pens rather than actually trying to score a goal. They need a harsh lesson in the basics of football.

Why are you Liverpool fans so deluded about Dalglish. Brilliant player without a doubt but his behaviour this season, particularly over Suarez has been an absolute disgrace and the slavish support of them both by many Liverpool fans really has tarnished the image of a great club.

The main argument here though is as Jaimie explains is the hypocrisy in attacking Balotelli and Mancini while at the same time doing absolutely nothing to look at the many shortcomings of Dalglish and his team.

Hansen has a very public platform to do this both in his BBC work and this paper.

He must take the patience of a saint to manage effectively, but that is no crime, and it certainly doesn't deserve the non stop sneering arrogance of Hansen and Sourness in particular.

20 goals in 26 starts!
13 goals in the PL already this season when he's only appeared in 21 games, starting in 16 of them.
The best penalty taker I've seen and a scorer of great goals.

Would Hansen, Lawro and Sourness all say with a straight face that they wouldn't swap Carroll for Balotelli and £12million, really? Because that's the comparison!

Unfortunately Hansen is living proof that just because you were a great player doesn't mean you neccesarily understand the game. Hansen's comments (for which I believe he's paid £1m a year by the BBC) are routinely banal. Stan Collymore has been saying this for years - Hansen, Lawrenson and Lineker aren't so much football pundits, more like a cosy little clique of golfing buddies. I doubt if they even watch the games they're commenting on and they certainly don't add anything to our understanding of the game. Hansen's attempts at reading a game are laughable  (especially when compared with Lee Dixon) and generally consist of something like 'he's got the ball, gone past the defender, bang, back of the net'. he's been getting away with this bollocks for years and he's the main reason why most have us have long since abandoned MOTD. It's the one issue in the whole world that I would ever agree with  Ferguson about  - Hansen's a clown and I wouldn't take anything he says seriously.

Jamie you take your conversion rate and shove them the only reason Ballasookie has scored more times and his conversion rate is better is because he has services from some of the best midfielders in the league. Suarez has done most of the work himself why don't you research how many times Baalasookie has had all the hard work done for him. Your shocking every chance you get you have to have a dig at Suarez. What the hell has Ballsookie done for his country you want comparisons then why don't you research that, if you put Suarez in City i bet he would score 35 goals a season. If the clowns of old want to talk about other players than thats their business, who cares we all know that there buddies of KK but the way you all ways refer back to Suarez, it just makes people sick. Any chance to stick it to Suarez we know you don't like him but the truth of the matter is he has been our best signing for the year or are you going to argue that as well.

Hey Jamie i read an article that Alan Shearer called Ballasookie a spoilt brat and i really think that you saying that Suarez has done worse is shit.

The words 'liverpool-kop' and 'Jaimie Kanwar' (apologies if I've got the K and the W mixed up) are fast becoming warnings from reading articles. You are not a Liverpool fan and this is not a Liverpool site. It pains me to say this but Gary Neville talks more sense than you, and I'm pretty sure there are less than 5 1st team players at LFC who you haven't attacked at some stage. This is not SUPPORT, and your use of sensationalist headlines to attract attention to dire articles is disgusting. I for one will never click in a Liverpool-kop link again, and would advise other real Liverpool fans to do the same.

His own manager has publicly attacked him and he has ha countless bust ups with his own teammates and fans here and in Milan.
Suarez on the other hand is loved by teammates, managers and players at every club he has played for.
That's why.

Just like your blog Jaimie, Hansen has to discuss contentious issues, it gets him and his paper publicity the same as your typical mordacious blogs get you internet hits.
It's all good fun until it turns into a witch hunt or has a sinister hidden agenda, then it becomes monotonous.

Jaimie are you really a Liverpool fan. Everday i read your articles on newsnow and its always the same trash talking you doing. No lfc would ever slag the club off as badly as whet u do. you never have anything good to say about our beloved club....

Mordacious? Haha. Touche :-)

There's an option on newsnow to hide sites you don't like. Why don't you use it? It's simple:

* Click on the name of site next to the headline
* select 'hide publication'

Done. No need to read any more 'trash'. Problem solved!

Witch hunt and hidden agendas....thats Hansen for you

Chi Bai lu. Hansen is correct. Kenny keeps protecting his players with no benefits coming from it. My Puki Mak says you have to call a spade a spade. Me, Ashfah loves Liverpool.

Don't believe everything you read in the media. Mancini gives his statements, not only as part of a honest assessment of Balotelli, but also part of his 'tough love' approach towards him..Do you see Balotelli slating Mancini for his statements? Any other hot-tempered player would have done so. Instead, he's apologized to Mancini and vowed to change his ways - in order to impress Mancini once again..hopefully this approach works out in the long run..
