Suarez to PSG? Let's hope so. His 'importance' to LFC is exaggerated...

It's panic stations for many Liverpool fans at the moment after star striker Luis Suarez recently admitted that he would consider a move to Paris Saint Germain. Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish has rushed to dismiss the speculation, but in my view, losing Suarez would not cause major problems for Liverpool, and might actually be good for the team in the long run.

On the 8th December 2010, I posted an article vehemently arguing that Liverpool should not sign Suarez. I stated:

"Suarez is the complete opposite of everything LFC stands for, and I have no doubt that he will cause problems for the club somewhere down the line, and those problems won't necessarily be cheating-related"

Predictably, I was slagged off by other fans for having this view, but when you consider the problems Suarez has caused in the fourteen months since he's been at the club, it's clear (IMO) that Liverpool would've been better off if the Uruguayan had never been signed in the first place.

Kenny Dalglish foolishly staked his reputation on defending Suarez, (and his standing in the game has been tarnished as a result) yet Suarez still went ahead disrespected Liverpool's blanket support by publicly whoring himself out to PSG.

Was there any need for Suarez to publicly state that he'd like to play for PSG? In response to any question, surely he could've just stated 'I'm happy at Liverpool and I don't want to play for anyone else'?

Suarez specifically *chose* to put himself in the shop window; what makes it worse is he made his comments in the midst of Liverpool's worst run of the season, when unity and togetherness are of the utmost importance.

For me, Liverpool should sell Suarez to highest bidder in the summer. Fans have this romantic, idealised view of 'King Luis', but what exactly has he done for Liverpool since arriving? Let's look at the facts:

* Overall: 14 goals in 40 games = 1 goal every 2.8 games
* This season: 10 goals in 27 games = 1 goal every 2.7 games
* Only 2 goals in the last 16 league games
* 7.7% conversion rate
* 1 goal every 293 minutes
* 76% passing accuracy (The only player worse is Carroll)
* 23% crossing accuracy

* 8 game ban for 'using insulting words' towards Patrice Evra
* 1 game ban for making an offensive gesture at Fulham fans
* Forced to apologise after refusing to shake Evra's hand
* Forced the club into an unprecedented double-apology
* Caused significant damage to LFC's worldwide reputation.

Where exactly is the argument to *keep* Suarez?

* He doesn't score goals regularly.
* He doesn't assist regularly.
* His finishing is staggeringly poor
* Despite his much vaunted 'genius' LFC are 7th in the league.

Why exactly is Suarez so essential to Liverpool, and what has done to justify such adulation amongst the fanbase? Ultimately, it's very simple: Suarez's job is to SCORE GOALS, and he has not done that consistently enough.

Fans complain about Fernando Torres but he is a prime example of what a striker is supposed to do at Liverpool, and Suarez is not in the same league as Nando when it comes to scoring goals.

Let him go, then spend the money on someone who *will* regularly score goals, and *won't* damage the club's worldwide reputation.

Suarez has 10 goals (6 league), and Bellamy - who cost nothing - has 9. We should be expecting more goals from Suarez, not just be happy with the bare minimum. He's not a prolific goalscorer in England, and with a pathetically meagre goals tally in the league, Liverpool need regular goalscorers. And no, I am not mad. Suarez is not irreplaceable.

Suarez is by far our best player and most creative player don't know who we'd get to replace him if he left so completely disagree we should keep hold of our best players!

KD will oversee the destruction of this club, wasted cash, unhappy youth players and best players leaving. i agree that luis has not set our world alight, and can never be mentioned in the same breath as torres BUT he's still a great player, better than the rest of the rubbish the 'king' bought+we need him.
our lame midfield is going to be over run tonight.

I can't believe what people write about Suarez. Of course, Suarez has behaviour problem but no one should write him off as far as football is concerned. He is absolutely class player. We are talking about the player who scored 49 goals in a season for Ajax.

If there was another striker playing with him in Liverpool who was half as talented as Suarez, he would have scored a lot more goals than he has. My heart cries when  I see so many times Suarez's good movement and dribbles go in vein because there is no one in red shirt around him to support.
He takes a run and passes the ball to other player with intend of doing 1-2 and guess what? players like Downing, Carroll and Adam take off with the ball in other direction. He is playing with some morons in Liverpool team who have no sense of anticipation.

It will be sad to see him go but seems it is going to happen. People like Jamie will be jumping with joy and will advocate Fulham's Dempsey is better than Suarez. Probably that's what you deserve!

You 'don't know who we'd get to replace him'? Are you suggesting that he's irreplaceable? Come on, you can't really think that. There is always someone else out there who will come in and do the business, and history has proved that time and time again.

If Dempsey comes in and scores goals regularly then yes, I will say he is better than Suarez (in terms of goalscoring). Why does one individual have to be the be all and end all? Impact on the team is more important than one individual's skills, and Suarez's actual impact on the team is not that great.

Who cares about his movement and dribbles if he's not putting the ball in the back of the net? That's his job, isn't it?

LFCFatBoy90 said...

I think he said that he may join PSG to "scare" owners, and Kenny to buy some quality players in summer. He doesn't have finishers and playmakers (passers) around him right now, and i think he wants more capable players to play with him... LFC is world class club and we need world class players around suarez and stevie g. If he goes to PSG, we'll manage without him, just like with "Torres" case. The only missed player is Alosno.

Jaimie K said...

Individual brilliance is not what matters when it comes to replacing Suarez; the ability to score 20 league goals a season should be the most important criterion, and if that player is less skilled than Suarez, then so be it.

SamK said...

I agree with you 100% but im not sure who they could in. lets face it at the moment Liverpool is not the most attractive place to come because of league position and thanks to Suarez!! and hand on heart Kenny hasnt bought very good players into our club. If anyone can tell me that Adam is a Liverpool standard thats ridiculous!! im not faulting the effort but not a LFC standard a good Blackpool, Fulham, Everton type player not top 4 same as downing same as henderson!! I feel this summer will be make or break for LFC and Kenny he needs to buy a fox in the box thats hangs around the 6 yard box!! Suarez is a frustrating player yes he can be fantastic 1 minute but his moaning at the ref and fellow teammates is getting a bit boring now!! wake up put the shift in and show that you want to be a LFC player!!!! or go to France with your buddies and pick up your £150,000 a week!

Suarez is the only outfield player we have at Liverpool that would get anywhere near the first 11 of any of the other top 4 possibly 6 in the league and you want to sell him. All genius's have their problems Suarez is no different. His accuracy is an issue but i feel many of his problems come from trying to do too much similar to Messi when he plays for argentina. if we signed some players who complimented Suarez we would not see the benefits two fold! He doesn't go from being prolific at Ajax to a terrible 1 goal in 3 game striker overnight!

Tornike Khomeriki said...

I don't believe he said he'd play for PSG one day to 'put himself in shop window' - he's just a person who doesn't look after his own words and actions.
Hope he's sold this Summer though.

Thanks in no small part to the comments past by the FA regarding any future 'indiscretions', Saurez has become a marked man in this country. It would only need a complaint to be made during a match by somebody, say like Evra, and have it confirmed by somebody, say like Ferdinand, and his career would be finished. I would hate to see him go, but I would fully understand why

LFCFatBoy90 said...

I'm not arguing with you about the fact we need a goal scorer (I agree and I think 99.9 percent of Liverpool fans will as well) but a new striker (world class I think we need if we want to compete for top 4! In my opinion) should be playing along side Suarez not instead of him.

Stefan Kajcevski said...

Well i agree with Jamie cause when you see i would rather see liverpool sell suarez for 35 milions buy De Jong for 20 get adam from the academy and spend the 15 milion on a good winger so we can fire up Carroll upfront. Watched every game of this season.....Carroll has 13 Crosbars downing 5.....maybe next year they are going to be goals....but i have seen suarez being in a position to link up with carroll kuyt or bellamy and he just wasted the oportunity. So i say again he is not irreplaceable and to name a few........Soldado, De Jong, even Toivonen from PSV.

Mikearms said...

Suarez has made it clear he wants to play for PSG? When did he make it clear? As far as I know he did an interview with a French newspaper and was trying to sing the praises of a national team mate by saying he would love to play along side him. I think maybe it was more of a hint to the LFC board to sign him for Liverpool so he wasn't so isolated on his own upfront or had to play with the slow Kuyt or the inept Carrol. Every striker needs an intelligent feeder or a quality partner to play alongside, Suarez has neither. Gerrard has been poor since his return, so who else other than Bellamy when he gets a game in the right position can Suarez hope to build an understanding with?
If Liverpool sold Suarez who would Kenny sign to replace him? Bent, Crouch or Heskey?
I understand your criticism of the way he may have inadvertently damaged the LFC brand but to castigate him for not being a prolific goal scorer is over the top. With a dynamic midfield and a quality strike partner Suarez will excel, unfortunately he is surrounded by mediocre players like Spearing, Downing, Adam and Carrol. I'm sure even RVP would struggle to score a goal with that bunch alongside him.

Wow this article shows almost all the hallmarks of what is wrong with sports reporting in this country. 1. Have a pre concived agenda and stick to it no matter what. 2. If facts.or common sense do not fit the agenda then make them.

The writer of that Suarez to PSG article has stated that suarez was being polite and showing respect for his mate Lugano. Of course that was not reported in the press because that does not get sell papers. So Suarez has not disrespected Liverpool at all in fact he has shown respect to PSG. Is that so wrong?

The rest of his troubles have been caused by a person who couldnt even be respectful to his own country.

Suarez is not in form at the moment of that there is no doubt there are many reasons for that but to say he should be sold on the back of a article with no context is madness

Adam Griffin said...

Why would we keep him? Because he's a good footballer. Perhaps if it's genuinely an issue of needing to raise money in order to spend then we could sell him at a profit but otherwise I don't see the point. You don't sell good players because they're not perfect. If we could somehow find 3 or 4 top quality attacking players guaranteed to improve on what Suarez offers then sure, he probably wouldn't hold his place, but otherwise the idea of selling someone of such clear quality is just dumb. Keeping him in the team doesn't stop us from getting more quality around him. He creates chances for himself and for others, he's obviously an exceptionally skilled young man and he works solidly for 90 minutes. He is genuinely a team player and even considering his flaws he's very highly regarded by his team, his captain, his manager, his country and his fans. But you'd sell him because doesn't convert enough of the goal chances he creates out of nothing. Get real. If he converted his chances he'd be Lionel Messi.

As for the club's reputation, well, by all means go ahead and wax lyrical about how damaging Suarez has been but it's hopelessly intangible and for many people quite meaningless. So our reputation has been "damaged". Really? And that leads us to ... what? A damaged reputation? So certain people think less of us? And who are they? Maybe United fans hate us a little bit more. I'm sure you're happy to make wild speculations and by all means, go ahead, it's what you like to do, but any inference that the player's behaviour effects the club on the pitch, on the league ladder or financially is far too subjective. These handful of incidents have been interesting to talk about but beyond that really quite unimportant.

If Suarez was asked 'would you like to play for Man United at some point', would you expect him to say 'Yes, I could come to Manchester' ?!

Luis Suarez is world class and a very valuable player. I wouldn't want to see him leave. However, no one player is bigger than a football club. Liverpool have had great players over the years and most of them - if not all - were winners. If Luis Suarez leaves this great club for a smaller one, he will regret such a move in the years to follow. The one big asset that Liverpool have is we are backed by The Fenway Group. Kenny Dalglish has made a lot of very average to poor signings. This is enough to frustrate any world class player. Sign players on Suarez's level and you will see a transformation of the player.

Jaimie K said...

Jaimie K said...

You state that Suarez is a 'good footballer' - I don't dispute that, but that's not a reason to keep him. Torres was a good footballer; countless others have also been in the past; the question is, what has Suarez done at Liverpool to IMPROVE the club? Have we improved in the league? Have his goals led to progress on the field? No.

The main problem is the manager, all these players are not so bad but they only need a better manager. Why don't you read between the line what the LP players are saying, they have all come to realise that Kenny is devoid of ability to manager a top team. If you watch, in all the games, there is no game plan, no tacktics, he does not read the game , rarely substitute at half time becoz to him to win or to lose is a game of lucky. We scored the least scores because players are instructed to pass the ball to Suarez and never to venture upfront. Look at the teams that are winning, even their defenders are always threatening in the 18 area box while LP midfielders are instructed wait by the centre arc. tHE GOOD NEWS IS THAT IN THE LONG RUN WE ALL PROVE WHO WE ARE AND KENNY WILL PROVE THAT HE IS THE WORST OF THE KIND

He'd still be expensive. Our signings have really frustrated, but only because they are capable of more. I understand pursuing home grown talent with the change of rules and it will benefit the England team (not that I'm that bothered about them). I also think the introduction of the fair play rules is why we didn't sign anyone in Jaunary (or anyone else for that matter).

I'd like to give Kenny another season and see how the team develops. I think we have played some good football this season but lacked clinicism in front of goal. Maybe we have set ourselves up for when all the new rules are in place and everyone else will suffer as we take advantage - or am I giving people to much credit to think long term?!

Suarez has made his mistakes and rightly so has been criticised at every angle including LFC Hierarchy who rightly disciplined him. You can uestion his morals or his attitude but IMO by trying to use stats to question his worth to our team is pathetic.

His worth to LFC is in fact based on his performances, he has had about 4 bad games since joining LFC, performance wise he is electric every game and if u asked any premier league defender who they least like to play against I bet Suarez would be easily in the top 3

My assessment based on me watching him play and not the amount of times he has hit the woodwork or actually scored. Oh and he is only 23 yrs old, I made many a mistake at that age and has years to progress in premier league!!!

I'm pretty sure the last place Suarez would actually like to go is Patrice Evra's France. Imagine the abuse he'll get there. Nothing in that story - just a polite answer to a simple question. Who'd blame Suarez for wanting to leave such a xenophobic league though? Every commentator practically refers to him as a greasy, cheating foreigner (Rooney, Gerrard and Gareth Bale are okay though - they're not dark-skinned). As soon as John Terry is charged, Ledley King and Adebayor are interviewed to say what a brave guy John Terry is (after the Spurs/Chelsea game - interviews carried in all the national papers). The agendas are so transparent. This wasn't conspiracy against Liverpool - just the usual pro-English international bias. There is such a collective blind-spot to this stuff in the UK. Even the vilification of Suarez for the handball against Ghana (for which he was correctly sanctioned) showed a disgracefully patronising attitude towards Ghana... real first world looking down on the poor plucky underdog.

He's still our only creative player and arguably our best player.Compared to the criminally overpriced cloven-hoofed British players brought in by Kenny and Comolli, Suarez represents a rare skillful game-changing player.
He doesn't score enough goals, true - but that is also due to the ponderous nature of our build-up play. Our whole midfield takes so much out of the ball that Suarez is always facing a fully composed defence. He ends up having to make his own chances. Having Downing, Adam and Henderson in the same team (I won't even include Carroll), is like playing against fourteen men. We're so obvious and predictable with them in the side that every team is sitting waiting.

Suarez was brought in to play off of Torres, a true CF. Then, when the wholse Chelsea debacle went down, Liverpool panicked and bought Andy Carroll. LFC must buy a CF to make use of Suarez. If they have no intentions of buying a real CF, then they should sell Suarez because he is being wasted.

Spaniard said...

If Suarez had better players around him then I think he would score a lot more. As it is he has to contend with scraps from our other new recruits and not getting much service - so feels he has to do most of it on his own then he invariably wildly lashes at a shot and it goes wide or over.

He realises that his team mates aren't all that, and he thinks that a club like PSG will give him more chance to win some decent silverware so puttin ghimself out there - I can't really blame him fior this because to have to play with the likes of Adam, Downing and Carroll must be a head****.

In regards to the Evra fiasco, the blame for me rests solely with Dalglish and the "advice" he gave to Suarez to deal with it. KD put himself ojn the line and got run over. It was teribly embarasing the way KD dealt with the whole thing (especailly the t-shirt debacle) and shoudl hang his head in shame. He shoudl have kept quiet about the whole thing till after the hearing and told Suarez to do exaclty the same. He shoudl have made sure that Suarez shook hands as it was only ever going to back fire on him, or insisted the FA scrap the whole handshake thing (a la QPR V Chelsea game) in the first place. I do not blame Suarez for this at all (although I do agree any reference to someone' colour is out of order)

I've said it before, but Liverpool have regressed 5 years under Dalglish and Suarez is smelling the coffee and wants out. He's villified in the press as a diver, cheat and generally nasty person and is thinking, "sod this, I'll do one and double my money thank you very much". Why not?

I do not think anybody can discount his ability on the ball or that he scored a lot of goals for Ajax. What I find so abismal is his conversion rate. Luis Suarez is the only player in the current squad worth paying to see - the rest (with the occasional exception of Skrtel and Bellamy) have been pretty much awful all season, he needs attacking support, not getting rid of ... and I didn't see United dumping Cantona when he attracted controversy.
Why not pick on the real failures this season - Stewart Downing - not a single Premier League goal or assist, Andy Carroll - terrible goal return for "England's New No.9", Jordan Henderson, Charlie Adam,   ... I'd play Maxi Rodriguez ahead of all of them ...

Your original article was very perceptive. I assume that it was written before he bit that poor guy Bakkal. He now has the longest ban in the history of both Ajax, and Liverpool. I also don't understand how hysterical so  many liverpool fans have become over him as a player. He's a good player, and you can see that he's got a lot of talent, and has a lot of energy, but there are huge flaws in his game, and in his character.

I also don't get this world class thing either. I just look and see a forward who scores 1 in 13 shots. (that's what 7.7% roughly translates as) It's difficult to figure out what kind of player he is, or how you'd build a team around him. And then there's always the fear that everytime he goes out onto the pitch, he's going to do something else that is going to embarrass the club.

It's just weird to call him world class. Liverpool have had a number of genuinely world class players over the years (not that many in the last 20 years mind you) and to confer World class ranking on him is kind of embarrassing. Recently xabi alonso, javier mascherano and Fernando torres and before his recent dip Pepe reina were world class, and stephen gerrard had some worldclass elements to his game. I really don't see luis suarez as being in the same class.

I do however sense the undercurrent of terror in the comments of a lot of liverpool fans, that though suarez mightn't be amazing, he's by far the best attacking player at the club, and if they sell him, they might just spend the money on a player as bad as carroll or downing, or henderson.

When the time comes to write the history of Liverpool Football club, I'm not sure that it is going to remember the Luis suarez period very fondly.

Listen I'm not saying he can't score goals for Liverpool. I actually disagree with Jamie as I believe his action man performances take away from his composure in front of goal. If you've just dribbled 3 people to create an opportunity you're more likely to miss when finally in front of goal. If for instance, Downing or Henderson were talented enough to hand it to him on the plate maybe he'll be putting away a few more chances. Maybe if there was less pressure on him to put it in the back of the net and more pressure on the likes of Carroll, Downing and Henderson, he'll have less 'life or death' chances to convert. However Jamie was talking about his measurable contribution to Liverpool and whoever we are blaming it isn't good enough.

On the otherhand, maybe I'm an anomaly to most LFC fans but I fully believe that he knowingly racially abused Evra. Also when assessing his past footballing career I don't think that he is of sound character and will put himself above anything else. He has brought the club's reputation to its knees while fans and management backed him against a considerable amount of reasonable evidence, yet at the first opportunity he was pimping himself out to the latest rich kids of Europe. The ironic thing is that he's not even being booed that much anymore. Ronaldo and Beckham got way worse for a whole season. Yet his personal muppet Gus Poyet is already using it as a convenient excuse to grant him a pay rise and move to the new glory hunters. Lest we forget he was talking about Barcelona a couple of months into his Liverpool career. Don't want this guy at the club any longer.

Suarez is a jem of a player. He needs to be played and managed correctly, then he will pay off with loads of goals, assists and excitement.

If, for example, you replace now Suarez with Messi at Liverpool, the result will be about the same, I am totally convinced of that.

And I am sure, if Suarez moves elsewhere, he will prosper and will show what a player he is. We on the other hand, will stay with our CHAD (with all cosequences).

CORRECT Jamie, for once!.

Sterling is the future for Liverpool and a player who could be world class for 10-15 years for the club. Suarez was always going to leave at the first spot of bother. He did it to Gronigen, he did it to Ajax, he'll do it to us. No bother, we'll make £10-15M off him. But Sterling, we could potentially make £20-30M off him, even more if factoring in inflation. If we want a long term plan we have to keep our best young players. Suarez is marquee. Sterling is the future. If you can't see further than a few months then you may as well be a Chelsea fan.

Red said...

Jaimie.....Your question should have been, what has Carroll, Adam, Downing and Henderson do at LFC to IMPROVE the club?. Have we improved in the league?, have their goals led to progress on the field?.
Than, and ONLY than, you should have answered with a big NO!!!

Red said...

Jaimie........read RED above, and there's your answer.

jaime , i believe luis is a fantastic player and will only improve if quality players are bought to play along side him. surely there are at least 5 players you would get rid of before luis. i  wonder what gerrard would say if he was asked "do you think we should sell suarez" hopefully he would see suarez as a great player who he would love to continue to play with and not have to admire him playing for someone else.

Red said...

I honestly have no idea what you're talking about. However I reiterate that the selling of our best young players is a more dangerous precedent than selling a troublesome marquee player. Imagine if Barca sold Messi, or Iniesta, or Pedro. Yet they sold Ronaldo, they sold Figo, they sold Ronaldinho, they sold Eto'o. I'm sorry, selling Suarez could be a problem but it would be a tragedy to sell off potentially world class English players before they've even had a chance to play for us.

OriginalChan said...

Hear, hear. Suarez has been lauded as our new 'hero', thus he can do no wrong. But his finishing has been awful. Beyond his dribbling in and around the box, he has done very little else. Only so much fans can put the blame at the feet of other players. It has been a disastrous season in the league for him both on and off the pitch, yet he can do no wrong.

OriginalChan said...

Please, never mention Suarez and Messi in the same sentence ever again.

Morals and principles don't matter in football. Its about money and success. Most of my fellow Liverpool fans back Suarez, regardless of what he does and doesn't do....because he wears the red shirt, any other club they would be on his back. So PSG will go for Suarez because they think he is quality in terms of football ability, regardless of his character.

Rick said...

Most players will do whats best for them selves when it comes down to it. As with most jobs, if you can get more money somewhere else you will go. Torres did not go to chealski to win things, he went for cash, probably an extra £50,000 a week. Of cause Suarez would not mind going to PSG, an extra £50,000 or more a week, plus champions league football, plus no one booing him every game, its a no brainer. All we can hope for is we get a big load of cash for him.

what you are not taking into consideration JK is, if he was not a good goal scorer why would you want to buy him? so he is having a bad season in front of goal, it happens to the best of players.

thats the problem with football today, you have one good season, next thing your the greatest player to kick a ball, have one bad season and your career is over and you should hang up your boots. Is that not being fickle?

ROSSO67 said...

I agree Jamie Suarez has got to it is possible they could almost double their initial outlay the players they could get with the money for him and Carroll IF spent wisely could go a long way.

Why not talk about 'Big-Time Charlie Adam ( Set Piece Specialist? he could't set a table! and if Peter Crouch was said to be slow- he'd look like Osain Bolt next to Big-Time Charlie ) , or Stewart Downing ( could have been, should have been and would have been..... but never will be ), i'll reserve judgement on J.Henderson for the time being., and Andy Carroll untill he starts getting some service. With the quality round him he's unplayable, creating spae and chances for others as well as chances out of nothing for himself. Commenting on our psiton and blamiong him directly don't make me laugh. Managers summer buys and poor tactics are our problem. Adam for example is not or has never been a def mid, he plays better behind the front two and not as a 442 man, Daglish must no this yet repeatedly plays him where his weaknesses are exposed. Suarez playing up top on his own alot leaves him isolated and frustrated, TONIGHT with Carroll and Gerrard along side different class 2 ASSISTS could have easily scored. Get a grip. He can be the foil to our "new" Rush as Daglish was, skillfull creative and has talent way aboe 90% of the Prem league.

I don't know why you are writing articles on this web page.

Pchatterley said...

Well said declan!!! Fair weather plastic supporters! So annoying reading this tripe from people who obviously know nothing or watch matches with their eyes closed!
And to jk.....it's fine posting stats but they don't always paint an accurate picture. Suarez may not have scored bags of goals but as you've clearly stated yourself, he's missed 9 games through suspension! He's also hit the woodwork 20 odd times!! Any other time they be the right side of the bar/post and go in. Coupled to the fact that we've had 8 or 9 man of the matches to opposition keepers! How often do u see motm awarded to keepers fullstop?? Let alone 8/9!?! Anyone with eyes can see Suarez is class....his previous record shows that! And finally.....Paul Mersin considers him in the top 5 in the world and a 'rolls royce' player......that's good enough for me! Amen

Pchatterley said...

Commenting on whether Suarez has IMPROVED Liverpool is ridiculous! You keep banging on with 'isn't the striker supposed to score goals?' (yawn)......here's my argument.....isn't a striker supposed to RECEIVE the ball to strike?? When he (top class footballer) is playing with mostly ordinary players, and not receiving too many of those through balls, what can he do? He comes back to try winning the ball for himself which he shouldn't need to do or SUPPOSED to do! So to say he hasn't improved Liverpool as a team is blinkered and nonsense. It's the players around him that are holding him up and NOT improving Liverpool. Torres was ordinary most years at athletico....he came and his partnership with gerrard MADE him (score goals as you say)......gerrard has been injured, otherwise this may have been the casewith these two also (last nights 3rd goal shows that! Dispel that! (if the article makes it but we both know it's correct)

Seriously, if you cannot see that Suarez stands heads and shoulders above the rest of the team (when Gerrard is out), then you know nothing of football. So many times this year the only time we have even looked like getting into the box was when Suarez got the ball, let alone looking like scoring. You keep harking on about the Dutch league being no measure of a player. Well, what about the Copa America? Some decent players in that comp. And the World Cup? Please. Put some better players around him and see his assists and goals rocket. Charlie Adam is hardly going to feed him goals, is he?

Pchatterley said...

Jamie conveniently forgot Suarez was bought to play alongside Torres!suddenly he's the worlds worst finisher (this is where he predictably types 'where did I ever say that'? Lol

Pchatterley said...

On the nail kopology! I hate it when ppl bang on bout Dutch league this, that n the other! A strikers role is to put the ball in the back of the net.....do people think that Dutch keepers aren't any more able to save a strike than any other nationality keeper? Or the defenders don't have a clue how to defend?!?
Suarez....with equal quality around him (gerrard excluded) would score in any team in any country!

Martin Badger said...

It would be fine to offload Suarez if they buy someone better, but will they? All too often at Liverpool - in fact, nearly always - the players that come in are no better than the ones that left. Sometimes, as with Adam and Henderson for Mireiles, they are much worse. Anyway, good win over Everton but will they manage to score against Stoke? Very doubtful about that. God help us if Stoke score first! One thing is certain - it will not be pretty!

If any of u morons yes that's right morons know anything Luis said he would like to play with his team mate or in other woods kk get this player he would be good for us it's called tactics like what Rooney did at united It makes me sick to read stuff like this let's get behind our team not bag a team after 1seaso. Couldn't agree more with you. I have never thought that highly of Suarez. He had the exact same liabilities at Ajax and for Uruguay. But in his defense I will say that in the US someone like Evra would never get away with that stunt: he calls Suarez a highly insulting name in return Suarez calls Evra a MILDLY insulting name and gets run off to exile while Evra plays the victim. That would never fly in the US. That's called a double standard over here.

All took a couple of seasons to settle and find there game and then they were unplayable in there pomp, Luis young, hungry and lacking talent around him when Gerrards out. When we sign a winger and talented playmaker in the summer lets reassess this time next year when I predict he'll have 15 goals+

Adam Griffin said...

Improve compared to what? To where we were when he joined? I think that's an emphatic yes. We lost one of the very best strikers in the world, replaced him with a injured and unproven young striker and yet got significantly better in the second half of the year. Improve compared to last season? It hardly makes sense considering there are a host of other player changes who would have a massive impact. Would you put the responsibility for league position on the shoulders of only one player when we spend so much time complaining about the ineffectiveness of his main attacking partners?

I'd ask instead: are you suggesting that the team would be no worse off with Suarez gone? Simply remove him from the team and we'd be in the same league position? As poor as his finishing has been that's 6 goals and 5 assists from a team total that is already embarrassingly low, not to mention the 4 penalties he's won that have been mostly wasted. There would be other contributions to consider beyond the simple goals/assist count where he has helped make something with an earlier pass or simply a good run at the right time.

For it to be worth our while letting Suarez go (and be happy about it) there would have to be a number of inbound players found that exceed what he provides. Not just one. One inbound striker could play alongside Suarez and we'd still have all the things that he contributes. One inbound striker and a pair of creative wingers could also still accommodate him in the formation. Like I said, you'd need to find at least 4 top-drawer attacking players to fill the front line before Suarez becomes surplus. And they'd all have to be better than him to justify moving him to the bench. I just can't see it.

His performance against Everton is precisely why, despite his shortcomings (which could well be a case of poor form, and excuse Torres is holding on to rather desperately for quite a long time) he's a very useful player who can contribute in countless ways. I'm not saying there are not players out there who are better, but why can't we get those players and still have Suarez in the team? I'd say that with better players around him and less need to work so hard for the chances he gets he would find himself in better positions to score, better balanced and with more time to take his shots and a much better conversion rate to show for it. His assist count would be massive as more skillfull and direct attacking players take positions to benifit from his creation, just as SG did last night.

Suarze is the most dangeruous forward in the PL, well marked and difficult tp play against.  Pure quality and this will only improve next year and way beyond expectations once other quality players are signed and the youth teams members like Sterling are intergrated into the first team. This happened last year and the team went on a run scoring goals freely.  So what has happened this year.  ASK THE MANAGER and GET MOURINHO ONJ BOARD.  WE would win the title within 2 years rather than waiting until I a 50 more years older

why not get rid of Carroll instead then, he is the useless one remember. I did insult in the remarks, you were offended as I am by you. Following a great night for the Club and team you follow it up with article undermining so much, it saddened me and irritated me. Why are you so bitter??

Most of your articles are insulting Jaimie to the club and players with patchy manipulated "stats" to back up your bizarre opinions. Naming the site Liverpool Kop and tarnishing the club day after day with negativity to the world online is frankly embarrassing.
I like a good debate though. I think you do look to stir things up. But why not a positive post for once? Without lacing it with an underlying general disapproval?

flapjackcarl said...

Jamie, you make the argument that Suarez is meant to be a goal scorer, and as such, he is failing in his purpose. However, you neglect that we bought suarez so that he could play with Torres. We didn't buy him hoping he would carry the load for Liverpool, but rather so that he could chip in with some goals and create bags of them for Torres. Unfortunately, he didn't get that  chance. But as far as trying to only judge him on goals, that's a terrible argument, since he was purchased as a supporting player.

Jaimie K said...

And you know this...how? That is pure supposition. Show me evidence where anyone fromLFC states Suarez was bought as a 'support' player.

flapjackcarl said...

If you'd like to make that case, show me anywhere where Liverpool stated they bought Suarez as the primary goalscorer for LFC. We both make the assumption that Suarez was bought to fill a role. I say look at the personnel on the squad when we bought him. I can't imagine we bought him to be a primary goal scorer with torres on the team sheet? Could I be wrong? Yes. But it's my opinion he was meant to play in behind torres (like he does with Carrol often), to score some goals and create more. He WOULD create more on a team with a goal scorer, wouldn't he? I like Carrol, and feel that he'll come good, but he hasn/t been racking up goals, and as such, we're forced to rely in Suarez, which I don't think is what we purchased him for. At the end of the day, it all depends on what you think Suarez was purchased for. I hold that the personnel around him should give you an indication of that: we bought him when we had torres (an out and out goalscorer), and when we lost him we brought in Carrol (who we thought would be a true goal scorer). Hence, we bought Suarez to create.

Jaimie K said...

Are you listening to yourself? I don't need to provide proof that Suarez was bought as a primary goalscorer. The very notion is ridiculous. Suarez is a striker, is he not? He has been played as a striker in *every* game he's had for Liverpool. He has never been played as a support striker.
The proof is in the pudding, and to suggest otherwise is tiresome pedantry of the highest order.
Based on the actual reality, there is no other assumption to make other than Suarez being our primary striker. He is, just deal with it.

The mob, 'if you are not with us you are against us', speaks again.

flapjackcarl said...

"striker" is an arbitrary term that ends up on the team sheet, but doesn't necessarily reflect where he plays. How often have you seen Suarez dropping in deep and picking up balls and trying to link up with Carrol? He haven't only used him there, but he's definitely been played as a central forward before. Not to mention that NEITHER of us can say where he would have played with Torres. I admit, Suarez has played as the out and out striker at times, but that doesn't mean it's his best role. Look at Kuyt: he is a striker by many definitions, but more often ends up as a winger.

gabweb said...

There are a couple of things here. Suarez played better last night, was more of a provider, almost as if he was showing Gerrard the respect that he doesn't show other players in the squad when Gerrard is not playing. Normally, it is head down and don't pass to anyone. Last night it was different.

Longest ban in the history of, both, Ajax and Liverpool and, yet, people still cannot see that he is a liability if you want to keep the club out of trouble. And still tell blatant lies about Evra. Ask Paris to stump up 50 million and they have a deal, I think.

Dream_of_Vegas said...

as Dalglish was to Rush, so Suarez would have been to Torres I totally agree good post sir!

Dream_of_Vegas said...

Sigh. You bad mouth Liverpool and it's players most articles, bar the "news" articles. That sir is insulting. Not debating logically with your readers, that sir is insulting.

Jaimie K said...

I agree with you out and out striker is perhaps not Suarez's best role, but that's where he plays most often, ergo he is Liverpool's primary striker. I also think if we bought someone else, he would still be the club's main striker. If he's not up to the job then we need to get someone who is.

flapjackcarl said...

I would contend that we need to find someone to play with suarez, not replace him. Cavani would be ideal given that he and Suarez already have a partnership. I know that's farfetched, but one can hope.

OriginalChan said...

In most games, it is Forlan that plays close to Suarez. Cavani plays on the right, Suarez as the main striker with Forlan behind him. So in terms of direct partnership with each other, they have hardly any games together in that sort of dynamic.

He plays most games for Uruguay as the lead striker and the same with Ajax, although sometimes interchanging with others during games for both. Cavani plays on the wing but comes inside and Forlan plays as the second striker.

He is only good at creativity and link up play when we are counter attacking as there is space and opposition are not always balanced/ready as they would be in a build-up phase. That is when his pace and troublesome dribbling works properly in relation to being penetrative. During a build-up phase (i.e. possession spell), he really isn't that effective in relation to penetrative link up play.

So I still think he is a main striker or likes to right up alongside someone, not behind them, just like he has been for Ajax and Uruguay.

OriginalChan said...

Just because he drops deep and TRIES to link up play (it really isn't that natural to him to try and link things up together anyway and isn't that effective at it, as Forlan does the bulk of it for Uruguay, Suarez stays right up top), doesn't mean he is not a main striker. There are different types of main strikers. Not all main strikers have to or do stay right up all the time a la Hernandez or Owen. There are main strikers like Ibra, Berbatov, RVP, Raul (in terms of positions they pick up on the pitch, Suarez is similar to Raul, although they are different technically such as with their dribbling), etc, who drop deep and wide to help midfield and than getting back up top. Far too simplistic to suggest that one is not a main striker, because he dares to drop deep and tries to link up play.

Suarez was bought to work in tandem with Torres. As a foil for Torres. It was a last gambit to try and make Torres stay, but it didn't work. He even said how much he was looking forward to playing with him.Everyone, it seems, apart from you, recognises this.

Kuyt is Liverpool's "primary" striker, surely because of his experience?  Or Bellamy. Suarez can only be regarded as the primary striker on the grounds that he is an ever-present (8-game ban notwithstanding), and our most skilful player.

You (and Gabweb) will never give Suarez credit, because of your prejudices against him. After all, he just set the TWO up on a plate.

Flapjackcarl is spot on.

Jim G said...

Why would he want to play in Paris? Especially if there are more like Evra....

Sorry, there I go again.

OriginalChan said...

We'll never really know about the Torres-Suarez thing, as it never happened. To say otherwise is merely speculation/'guesstimation', a la tabloid.

Stevie G did most of the work for that last goal, though credit to Suarez for being unselfish and/or maybe his lacking confidence in front of goal.

im really disapionted by some liverpool fans and reporters these days, they seem to want the team to do bad, get rid of saurez ! did fergie get rid of beckham when he get sent off for england, or cantana, or rooney when he had a bad PR spell with a old granny.

the only thing that keeps me from getting down over the negative fans is that the real people who know about football ie KK have more patience more understanding and arent so emotional.

if you guys tan the club then we would be in trouble

Dad said...

You're right. There are a lot of black people in Paris. He'll hate it.

Elysiumfields said...

make me laugh, short termism is rife you say then say we lost three games lol

tottenham better get rid of harry thenm they lost a few on the bounce, wait so did wenger,

KK is about a year in with one trophy so far, this isnt about tactics this is just a hate compaign from the pro benitez group.

if we end up 5th with the carling cup thats good, if we win FA you have alot of back pedderling to do.

plus saurez and had a pretty shit time due to off field issues , he was on fire before, he will get it back looked very good again vs everton, bet you wished we had lost to prove your piont

Read the report. What Evra said is a common expletive similar to 'f**king hell' and not to be translated literally. Al Sharpton would have had him pleading for forgiveness in the US.

gabweb said...

Prejudice against him? That's fine, if watching someone and deciding that they are trouble is prejudice, then so be it. I thought that prejudice was disliking someone for no apparent reason other than what they are, not what they do. That's simply dislike. I take it, then, that you like everyone?

gabweb said...

Yes, like to see him go there and call everyone negrito!!

But, saying that, after the World Cup, Evra probably is not that popular in Paris, either, so if he can stop pinching the negritos skin, he might be ok.

gabweb said...

Never, was he bought to play with Torres. The owners weren't putting their hands in their pocket until Torres left and the club have already admitted they paid so much for Carroll because of what they got for Torres. We were offering 12 million for Suarez before Torres decided to ask for a transfer. That deal never looked like happening until Chelsea stepped in.

gabweb said...

or maybe he might just bite someone to make sure?

LOL! I agree! Good call that Clowning, Carroll and Adam are morons. They do have their abilities which we all can see, but their movement and game intelligence are horrible. It is unfortunate Henderson lacks a sense of adventure, otherwise he's speedy, tricky and intelligent. Adam is actually great to have distributing the ball from the middle of the park, but the moment he bombs forward, you know he's so going to waste the ball. Clowning does get to the byline and put in the crosses, but you have to wonder, who is he crossing to? What's he crossing for? He never picks out anyone - but that said, our forwards should be anticipating him and move smarter. You can't really fault Carroll for his improving industry nor for his accuracy or first touch, but his reading of the game and timing are absolutely shocking - his decision making and appreciation of space are even worse, but if it's any consolation, these things do improve with experience.

Pastor of Muppets said...

Suarez was bought as Kuyt's long term replacement - top scorer in the Eredivisie, doesn't give up, likes to play between the lines, doesn't score much in England, does better cutting in from out wide.

Pastor of Muppets said...

We need Aquilani back! He will transform our attack overnight and we will see Suarez, Carroll, Gerrard and Bellars score for fun!

Pastor of Muppets said...

Kenny and Rafa have always kept an eye on such things, however, I am surprised we did not buy Bent in January. Comolli is a big fan of Bent and both Henderson and Downing serviced him well last season for their respective clubs.

I disagree with the count of good football. Liverpool played good football under Kenny in the 80s and when he took over from Hodgson, but we've been sloppy, tentative and player anticipation had been poor until the last 4-5 games, where Oldham and Cardiff were turning points and Sunderland was a minor blip. The football was great against Arsenal and Everton though.

Jamie you are a fuking knob - every time i open this shite website you are criticising or trying to stoke controversy. Are you really a Liverpool fan? Have you ever been to a game ? Or are you just sat in your bedroom watching some highlights show and listening to some muppet pundit who also doesn't have a clue. Your a bellend of the highest order. God only knows why i keep opening your articles because they are always bollocks. I notice you say you also dislike Benitez, so i guess when he won us the European Cup and you watched the highlights you didnt cheer? Or when he beat Real Madrid, yes Real Madrid 4-0 and Manchester United 1-4 you also didnt cheer because it was Rafa's team? Rafa had his faults all the top managers do but not even the greatest managers could have worked in his surroundings and circumstances, yes he spent money and signed a lot of players, but his track  record was oustanding, his win ratios were brilliant for some of the rubbish he had to put up with with the previous owners shenanigans. The club was in a mess, we were on the brink of going under, he had to balance the books. Rafa gave me some fantastic memories that i will cherish for the rest of my life, Chelsea 1-0 and the ghost goal, Milan, West Ham, beating United 4-1 at Old Trafford, Alonso, gerrard scoring 20 goals in a season, Pepe Reina, Torres, 100+ goals in a season. I could go on but your a bell. Suarez is class and a menace to defenders, a top quality striker with him and we'd a lot closer to 4th than we currently are.

OriginalChan said...

So in other words, Suarez can do no wrong in your eyes and everyone else is just plain evil and corrupt(!)

OriginalChan said...

I take it you left out 'bad' before the 'form'. If not, yikes, I shudder to think how worse Suarez is when he is bad form. His finishing is absolute trash at the moment, yet he is in good form....amazing...

OriginalChan said...

He has found himself in plenty of good goalscoring positions to score but his finishing has been dud.

OriginalChan said...

Pet hate: People throwing around the 'world class' tag around like confetti, especially when because they play for Liverpool

OriginalChan said...

'The best player in the 'epl''. One of the most funniest comments I have read on this thread, if not the funniest. Jeez, how blinkered do fans get over their own players.

OriginalChan said...

That second paragraph was a refreshing change from the usual tribal nonsense spouted by my fellow Liverpool fans.

OriginalChan said...

Doesn't make you feel weird calling some random person 'dad'? ;)

OriginalChan said...

Part of his job is to finish off chances and he has been trash in that regard. 'electric', my backside

Jaimie K said...

Agreed. Being the best must surely be about end product too. How can a player with a 7.7% strike be the best in the league? Robin Van Persie is streets ahead of Suarez, and main reason is that he gets the job done.

Al said...

Yea well I will be a good thing for Suarez not to stick with a team that is going nowhere surrounded by low quality players and poor tactics.

OriginalChan said...

Nah, Rush, Keegan, Toshack, Beardo, etc, they were 100% quality. He isn't on their level. He may well be in the future but until than, no way 100%

Can you show us the transcripts of the interview you have?

Jim G said...

For the sake of balance, Dad, I refer you to the excellent Newsframes article on 'churnalism' January 6, 2012.

This incident started during a football match, after Patrice Evra (Manchester Utd) made the offensive remark,“your sister’s pussy”*, to Luis Suarez. It’s alleged (by Evra) that Suarez used racial insults in the dialogue that followed. (*Evra made the remark in Spanish: “Concha de tu hermana” - para 87)..............
Was Patrice Evra correct when he claimed that the Spanish for “your sister’s pussy” translates to “fucking hell” in English? (para 87).............

So one minute Evra is an expert in spanish tranlation, the next minute 'negro' means 'n!gger'.

jaimie, you are so damn stupid! Suarez and Nando do not even play the same position. Suarez is all over the field working hard, he busts his arse every game, thats why we idolize him, he's a hardworking player. Yes, he can't finish, but he creates lots of chances all LFC needs is someone at the end of them. Geez, is not like there are 11 suarez' on the pitch to do everything he can do.
