Confirmed: ‘Major’ UK team 'negotiating’ deal for £15m Uruguay star. LFC?

After the failure of Stewart Downing, many fans would argue that Liverpool's biggest transfer priority this season should be the purchase of a top-class winger. Uruguay international Gaston Ramirez has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield over the last year, and his Agent has today revealed some tantalising details about his future.

Ramirez's Agent, Pablo Betancourt, revealed in January that there was definite 'interest in England', but that 'no meetings with any clubs' had taken place yet.

Things seem to have moved forward since then, with Betancourt confirming this week that negotiations were going on behind the scenes to secure the Bologna winger's signature. He told calciomercato.com:

"I can tell you with certainty that there are negotiations ongoing in Buenos Aires with a major English side which is ready to buy both the 70 per cent owned by Bologna and the 30% of Penarol.

"There are other clubs interested, like Juventus, but the only concrete offer comes from England and I will soon bring it to Bologna. Will Ramirez leave next summer? Given the amount of clubs interested, I would say yes"

Perhaps Liverpool are the 'major English club' to which Betancourt refers. With Uruguayan stars Luis Suarez and Sebastian Coates already at Anfield, Liverpool would seem to have a small advantage over the likes of Man United and Arsenal.

i can see your a bit of a pessimist but regardless of recent results, we are still a major club in england given the fact that were the most successful. And besides he wasnt going to say a non-major club in england was he..

stop being so negative

i think he be a great signing but im not to sure on his position, i thought he played more as a second striker? not complaining if he plays on the wing however

We are having meetings for transfers for next season in March?
Rafa will be choking on his facts! We are always to slow at transfers!

Martinmarx said...

As was said above, "Major team" rules us out unfortunately.

Madness said...

All depends on the context in which you use "major" club - If based on recent success then I guess it is United or Chelsea, in terms of wealth / revenue it is probably City or Arsenal, if you are reffering to a major club in terms of past success then yes we are still a major club - something we have in common with Leeds, Torino, Deportivo, and River Plate - history doesnt last forever.

wouldnt really blend in with the current team would he

I know its great isnt it, we did our business early last summer as well and that worked wonders

He looks more like a midfielder than a winger and isn't really quick either but looks a good player. Hopefully a Charlie Adam replacement.

GM said...

agree.. we are far from a major team... Dalglish has relegated us to mid level crap status... we've become more of a joke than a destination top players want to go...

Jobsy said...

No not at all, though i suppose it would help suarez and gerrard, be good for them to know they can actually pass it to someone else instead of just between themselves

give it a few weeks and that will change

Liverpool isn't a major club anymore.

River Plate is the most succesful team in Argentina - they now play in the second division. History means nothing when you have no pedigree in the present time.

major club on or off the field????? maybe not on but certainly are off it.

Rajpdxusa said...

Er yeah we're not in the second division. We're 7th in the Premier league - and that's low for us.

The op was talking about us not being able to attract top players. Getting the finances of the club sorted out long term and letting the manager get on with rebuilding will allow us to get the players we need when we need them, but even right now to suggest that Liverpool can't attract top players is a bit absurd.

Rajpdxusa said...

No we're not.

What's your evidence to back that up?

Mark Whitelaw said...

Not a major team, Liverpool? Do you ever go outside of your house?
I'm working in Malaysia, they're crazy for LFC down here, Chelsea & Man Utd have both played summer tour matches in the national stadium in KL, the only sell out crowd? Liverpool!
Don't let the lack of PL wins detract from the fact that there are generations of people worldwide who have grown up supporting Liverpool and have passed that down to their kids, we're still a major global institution - only one of 3 clubs entitled to wear the blue badge on our sleeves during Champions League matches.

Simon said...

Is he any good?

Anybody seen him play, not just YouTube clips?

We should snap up Kevin Doyle, Beausejour, Nathan Dyer or Scott Sinclair, Marc Albrighton swap for Downing

History DOES last forever, they even have TV channels dedicated to it, it's where legacies are built from.

Torres about to re-ignite

He's getting full 90 minutes to do it recently

Man of the match in 3 of last 4 games

Has to be our greatest regret, letting him go

Hicks and Gillet to blame again!!!!

Madness said...

Yes whilst everyone is competing in the present we continue to watch the best of moments on LFC TV - we havent moved with the times and sooner or later living on past success will wear thin if not already.

Jobsy said...

dont forget the player they call henderson, he plays for liverpool pretty much every game though you could be forgiven for not realising that he playing

Madness said...

yes pom poms out for the 8th place finish

Simon said...

Or Steven fletcher

Madness said...

And yet when the club target players like Phil Jones or Ashley Young (who are overated anyway) they cant sign them  - a large fanbase has nothing to do with being competitive - and certainly not attracting players - just ask the man city squad

Jobsy said...

so i will assume your very happy we have spent millions on very average players? and can you justify ANY of the players been in the 1st team? other then suarez and enrique (who funnily enough arent british) can you name 1 other signing that has done even ok for the club? maybe you will point to downing as your example, but before you do remember the teams he has played well against first, and remember the general quality the players they possess and he is up against..
Just because we voice concern doesnt mean we dont back our club!

Madness said...

"to suggest Liverpool cant attract top players is absurd" - do you really believe this ? or is your measurement of a top player misguided?

Hazard is a top talent - chances of him coming to Liverpool - Zilch

Untill we can get in the CL then afraid the best players will not want to play here.... we have lost world class players over the past few years and replaced them with rubbish.

Rajpdxusa said...

I don't accept your argument. It's a bit like saying George Clooney's not all that attractive because there is someone out there who will reject him. It's tough at the top.

a) The Club under H&G attracted good players - but couldn't hold on to them.

b) We're not the only big club out there. So yeah Eden Hazard may not come to Liverpool - assuming we make an offer for him - but even in the 1980's when we were way way ahead of everyone else, there were top players who went to other clubs in preference to us - even Man U.

We're in the ballpark. I don't doubt for one minute Champions league football helps - but consider the players that went to Man City before they qualified for the Champions league. Yes I know about the money - but it's also about the project.

We'll be fine. As a club we're actually doing a lot of the right things to get stable with revenues and move going forward - but it will take time.

You can however substitute money for time - I'd say about £150 million NET per year judging by Chelsea and Man City - but this would assume no financial rules coming in to force.

Rajpdxusa said...

Point taken.

the fact that we voice concern means we care about our club lol

If we get Rafa back in the summer, our chances of getting Torres back definately increase

PLEASE KICK-OUT THIS KIT MODEL HENDERSON..THE MOST LOUSY & GARBAGE PLAYER OF LFC HISTORY

rubyrm said...

It's Commoli's goons out there feeding crappy players to KK. Why is the blame solely on KK? We always read Commoli is tracking all kinds of potential players. Has there been anything said about KK  tracking any players? NO. So there, the culprit is Commoli and he should be blamed for the shambolic signings so far.

Madness said...

sigh - again you are missing the point - How many fans do Man City have globally?  Or Chelsea

Now work out how many world class players they have and are willing to join their team.

Then work out how many fans we have and how many world class players joined our team and think of the players that reject us (Phil Jones / Ashley Young)

Eden Hazard is up for grabs, if he moves to the premiership do you think he cares about the size of the fanbase? Based on your argument he will be joining us but something tells me he will not be.

JayOne said...

Biggest regret is selling a waning striker for £50m!? You're having a laugh mate!

Madness said...

Oh dear, I am talking facts about football and you bring up George Clooney - gives me an idea of what I am dealing with.

a) we attracted good players under H&G because RAFA spotted them - was Alonso world class when we signed him? Or Mascherano? or Torres? We were competitive in the CL so they joined us.

Do you consider Phil Jones or Ashley Young to be world class? I dont but they rejected us in favour of Utd so if we cannot attract them it shows we are not able to compete in the transfer market and have to settle for rejects of other clubs.

Point is if we were to bid for Cavani - and Chelsea , Utd, Arsenal, City were to do the same - I doubt he and his agent would be googling the size of the fanbase and how many trophies we won in the 1980s as the basis of their decision.

Use my River Plate point as an example - top players in Argentina would at this current time want to play for Boca instead of River so history dont mean shit when trying to sign talent - being competitive means everything and this season we are very far off the mark.

Rajpdxusa said...

Why don't we use Preston North End as an example then instead? They used to be really great but you're right Cavani doesn't want to sign for them.
Good thing you're not an agent then by the way. Do you have any idea how much money a player (and his agent) can make from his image rights - long term? You think the fan base doesn't matter? As I said, some we'll win, some we'll lose. We're only just getting to the point financially where we can start investing in the club year on year. Rafa said his hands were tied at the end.If we have the money, plenty of players will want to play for us. Not everybody, but enough.

Gilstrap said...

its not commolli who drops carroll after he scores....its not commolli who plays  players out of postion...its not commoli who brings off a winger then brings on a target man...

I like that - nice easy way to ommit Kenny from blame and pass it on to comolli -

Last time Dalglish worked in Football when he had power to purchase players? 1998 - he was sacked at Newcastle - 14 years out of the game is probably going to have some effect on your scouting abilities is it not?

Kevin Keegans 1997 team was superb, and when he quit Kenny took over but what happend the following summer? Kenny brought a number of flops that took a title challenging team to a 14th place finish with his OWN stamp on the squad. The same has happend this year at Liverpool ... once Kenny has had his own players in the club has regressed (considering the cost of those players)

James Lopez said...

yup i can.. Craig Bellamy...just saying

rubyrm said...

Right. But the point is "Who scouted and bought these overpriced jerks?? It is simple English. Commolli should be made accountable too. What choice does a manager have when you need to replace a bumbling monkey with another. There is no depth in this current "Squad"
And Hey. Look at Newchuckles. They have spent wisely on new players with our money. African and South American players are a bargain at this time of inflated prices for British players. I don't see England winning a major competition any time soon. The FA is a Joke. Going into a major competition without a manager.
I still am compelled to say Commoli is incompetent. KK does not have the final say in new players signings.

Madness said...

your final comment is not fact - it is an opinion with no evidence ... but is also a desperate plea to provide Kenny with excuses for his failure this year

Kamster said...

Dalglish also feels he has earned the right to play....  Worst signing made last year....  Commoli its about time you were shown the door

I think if you look at our current league position he is about right. After today's performance it looks that way. Sad but true...

I think they should find out who the final decision on the signings and whoever it was should face the consequence and also the exit door but not before apologising to the owners who trusted them with their millions
