Arsenal legend claims: Two cups is 'not good enough' for Liverpool. Agree?

I think it's safe to predict that Liverpool will not finish in the top four this season. As John Henry suggested at the start of the season, that will be a 'major disappointment', but the club could still finish the season with two trophies, which - according to some fans and ex-players - would mean a good season overall for the club. Former Arsenal legend Lee Dixon disagrees, and blames Kenny Dalglish's signings for Liverpool's league failure this season.

Summarising the Wigan defeat for Match of the Day, Dixon - who won four league titles and three FA cups with Arsenal - argued:

"I think the expectation levels at Liverpool are so high that two cups for the fans is just not good enough. Five wins out of 15 is the lowest return since 1953 for Liverpool, so Kenny has to look at those signings.

"Suarez has done alright but sould score more goals; Enrique's done okay, but the rest of them haven't done the manager justice. They haven't played well enough for long enough. Something needs to change; Dalglish has to try and reinvigorate that squad".

Dixon is 100% right in my view, but I'm not sure the majority of fans would agree that two cups is 'not good enough', which is a sign that the campaign to systematically lower expectations has worked.

I've made my feelings clear on the meaningless Carling Cup many times, but it's always great to win the FA Cup, and I hope Liverpool can do it. Even if that happens though, it still wouldn't be enough to mask the atrocious form in the league.

only 3 clubs before have managed to win both carling and fa cup in the  history so a double cup win for us looks a bit too much for our standards anyway we still hope but what about the league form, winning the fa cup wont send us in the CL, I think FSG should sack kenny after the end of season its the better choice for all we will remain the same if kenny stays here for the next season again he should go and take his flops with him and we need a new manager new players new strategy everything new so we could challenge for the top 4 next season, dont know If real madrid loses the title this season to barca im sure they will sack murinho so why not going for him might be difficult to get him but not impossible he also said he will return to epl, im sure murinho can take us to cl again

I don't get this 'reinvigorating the squad' thing at all. In all 13 years I've been supporting the club I can't recall any instances of a manager reinvigorating a poor Liverpool team which then went on to perform consistently well. This is a flawed team, and the longer this 'reinvigorating' stuff goes on, the longer real solutions are delayed.

Steve81 said...

I would actually agree with Dixon in the sense that 2 cups would not be good enough if this was masking over how poor the league form is (which this season it will do).  If Liverpool were doing acceptably better in the league (ie making a proper push for top4) then 2 cups would be enough.  Should LFC add the FA Cup to the League Cup then fans can rightly cheer this success however the bigger picture is in the league we have been shocking for the last couple of seasons and that rightly is not enough for a club with our standards.

sorry as a LFC fan it is still not good enough, our performance in the league has been a disgrace, daglish has brung in mid table team players and put that together with poor tactical play that is not a good combination and then he blows smoke up everyone arse buy saying what a brilliant season we are having
get rid of kenny now folowed by downing, henderson, adam, kuyt, carra

Winning two cups would be a good season for Liverpool if we can finish atleast 5th in the PL. Kenny admits that a change in tactics is required because of our recent slump. I'd like to give him a chance and see what he can do. If we do win the double this season, I'd probably give Kenny another season to see what he can do. Would definitely expect a change in the squad in the summer though. The current team isn't champions league material, that's for sure.

People are funny. EPL is the ONLY 1 competition out of 3 competitions we did not do well this season. This season we have BEATEN Man U, Man City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Newcastle & drew with Spurs in our rematch, all teams above us in the league table. That shows Kenny has not lost it. It's only the "lesser" teams that we lost points, this is due to inconsistency and perhaps lack of respect for these "lesser" teams. We are in Europe next season, albeit a less prestigious one. Top 4 is not as easy and "done deal" as some fans may like to think. Even Chelsea may not make it. Let's cool the talk on sacking KD. Give the man a break and a chance to prove himself. It's only KD FIRST SEASON after returning!!!

gabweb said...

The league form is just too poor for the cups to make enough of a difference in my opinion. If we are 5th and winning two cups, then ok, even a close 6th. But lying in 7th, nearer to 10th or 11th than 4th, simply is not good enough. Teams who are 15th can get to cup finals, particularly the Carling Cup, and we are not in the FA Cup final yet. Our recent performances suggest that it is not going to be plain sailing getting there.

But we are 7th. Have one of the poorest records at home this season. Broken records of negativity. Spent over £100M on average players and his interviews are embarrassing. On top of that the Suarez-Evra fiasco was manhandled and KD had a part to play and he failed.

Should we let him spend another £100 M next season on players that he chose?

I don't think we have progressed this season. We have played well sometimes but if we don't win then it counts for nothing.

Winning the league Cup was nice, but when United won it a few years back most our fans on forums were calling it a mickey mouse cup. Which it is although it shouldn't be.

But I fear KD may have won himself more time purely of him winning the prestigious league cup and potential winning the FA Cup.

His legend status are clouding the facts of this poor season.

Didn't do much during his first stint? Apart from assembling one of the finest Liverpool teams ever. The one containing Barnes, Beardsley, Aldridge and Houghton, the one that won the league in 88. Kenny is one of the finest managers we've ever had but the players he's bought have let him down massively. Bringing Rafa back would be a massive step backwards.

Septimus_severus said...

I don't think Kenny will get another season.
The reason he's saying we have made progress is because he's fighting for his job.
Let be clear here it's not only Dalglish that should be under pressure.
Steve Clarke Kevin Keene have to bare responsibility as well.
Kenny has ADVOCATES on the board as well which needs to be examined watch this space.

Theycallmemrburt said...

Teams Like Birmingham start the season in the hope of a good cup run and a top ten finish.  When Birmingham won the league cup last season they would have been hoping to finish 8th or 9th which is roughly where we are going to finish. Instead they got relegated highlighting McCleish's inability to motivate his side as cup games on the whole are self motivating.  No coach needs to tell a player that a cup final is important.  Players have a natural drive and desire to lift a cup.

The slog of a 38 game league season is different as managers need a special combination of tactical nouse, stick and carrot to be succesful in todays game.  Kenny only has a Carrot.  Not good enough.

Septimus_severus said...

Zulu this is not 1988 it's 2012.
You then follow that up by saying the players let him down.
Kenny bought these players and they are in my view playing to the best of there limited ability so the Manager made a HUGE error in buying them.

The Domestic cups for a club our size are only as good as our league position.  The domestic clubs for a club the size of Fulham or Birmingham is all that is reasonably expected.

Our top priority this season was forth.  Our next priority was a cup but the difference between the two priorities was the equivalent of dating Jessica Alba and dumping her for Susan Boyle and then saying the most important thing is companionship.

Bekim said...

I don't like ex players from other sticking their noses in our clubs business even though he's right at what he said.his club haven't won anything for donkeys years. They qualify for CHL that's cool but they never actually won it. Have they. They have lots of catching up to do in terms of wining trophys when they compare with us. Having said all that as a Liverpool fan I'm not happy with the league position. Don't care about CC but if can win the FA cup than it would b fantastic.

We have been beating big teams for years now, so I don't know why your beating your chest in relation to us winning against the likes of City, United, Arsenal, etc, this season. Every man and their dog knows we usually turn up against the big sides in recent seasons. We have been losing points to 'lesser' teams for ages.

j75j said...

They have thrown away their invincibility over the last 7 years, by not spending.

Edram11 said...

Too right. Two cups is not enough. However, we need to stop living in the past and start focusing in the present and immediate future.
The problem I have is that I'm certain the signings we've made this year are not that bad. In my opinion, we should be fighting for that third or fourth position and establish a sustained performance there and then attempt to take that extra step forward.
Is Daglish the right man for the job? Unfortunately I don't think so. He is good to stabilise the ship but not to take us forward to where we need to be aiming for.

Zulu said...

I know it's 2012 my friend, I just reacted to someone belittling Kennys first spell in charge when he said "he didn't do much during his first stint". All the players are letting Kenny down not just the ones he bought. But saying they are playing to the best of there abilities is just not true. They are playing poorly and not even coming close to playing to playing well. Maybe Kenny is to blame for this, but once they cross the touch line onto the pitch what more can Kenny do. Something is just not clicking for us in the league but when it comes to playing in the cups we look a different team. Maybe because we have dominated so many league games and come away with only a draw or sometimes nothing the confidence is draining away. Massive changes have got to be made but I'm just not sure if it's the playing staff or the manager.

Theycallmemrburt said...

We have a lot of catching up to do in terms of stadium, wage structure, youth development, signing players who can play football and never being outside the top 4.  I bet they generate more money than us this season which ill again strengthen their already terrific foundations.  In a few years when we are looking back championing our league cup success Arsenal will be top of the league looking down on us screaming "look at me now....bitches!!"........

Michael said...

Dan said...

Pretty much every player in the world has said winning things is the most important part. That's why Arsenal loose their best players, it's why we lost some in the past (Owen, and then we won the champs league, Torres, and then we won the carling.) not being in top 4 sucks, but we've won a cup and are 2 games from winning the FA cup too, that to me is a great return from where we were 18 months ago. Have some patience, even City took 3 years to get to Champs league, 2 years for a trophy.

Allenvanwyk said...

j75j said...

Did that happen over night?
Or has it took Wenger and Arsenal 16 years to get to where they are to be in a new stadium and nearly debt free.
One of the reasons they can debt free is the fact they can sell apartments in Highbury Square for £200,000- £600,000 !

gabweb said...

Here's what Kenny can do, not insult our intelligence by saying that anyone who is disappointed needs an intelligence check. That is offensive nonsense and Hodgson would be lynched for saying that. He can also not tell the players that it would take 'one hell of a player' to replace any of the players that he has, when our current form put us in the bottom three in the league. He can give players other than Henderson multiple starts between now and the end of the season.

Playing staff or manager? Well, if it is the playing staff, then it is the manager's fault. Reckon a decent, modern manager would have had these players in the top 5 at least and would not have had some of those players at all.

gabweb said...

We've got a few Susan Boyle admirers on here, I reckon!

Sorry to disagree with you, well not really as your a gooner. You have a stadium you cannot fill as the fans are unhappy with among things; some of the best players attracted; Benayoun, Park, Chamakh, Almunia, Koscielny, Squillaci, Diaby, Walcott. I could go on but no doubt you already find yourself agreeing with me. Instead I will make mention of, without naming, the players that have chosen to leave your club for pastures new because your brilliant manager cannot deliver success. Not even the Carling cup by luck, in how many years? Lucky us eh and as these same players have all stated they wish to finish their careers having won things. Not having been able to finish in the top four!
This is our first season of real transition, while for you it's perennial.

Yes kenny did superb back in 1988 but we were movers and shakers then. The financial clout to buy WHO we wanted and assured THEY would come here. The game has changed beyond recognition. Compared to Abramovitch and The Arabs, Fenway are paupers...we can't compete. I feel desperate for Dalglish he loves the club but he is NOT the man for Liverpool. If love for the club was the only criteria for the job a lot of us would be throwing our hat in to the ring

Nobody has been more frustrated with our league form than me pal. But surely you can see that when Kenny says stuff like the one hell of a player thing it's to try and give the players confidence and massage their ego's. I would be very surprised if he actually thought these things privately. The players he's bought have been disappointing but sometimes it takes a while for players to settle in, look at Lucas as the perfect example and how much we miss him now. We should judge Kenny and the team at the end of the season and if things haven't improved then Kenny and some of the players will have to be moved on.

I disagree. Dixon did say that expectations were high and honestly with the amount of money that was spent maybe some would feel it should be high, but as a club in a rebuiling phase we should have been more realistic. I follow Juventus as well and this is the same problem they ran into after Calciopoli. Every fan expected that they would immediately challenge for the title...then ended up going through four coaches and are now on their 5th and now seem to have stability. I fully expect next season for us to be a challenger for the CL places as the other teams are not that much better than us. A few signings specifically to address our scoring problems and we SHOULD have a much better campaign

Furthermore, it's not 1988 it's 2012 and Kenny Dalglish has not adjusted to the Modern Premier League.
You can keep banging on all day but the Statistics and the Premier League table do not lie.
There is no improvement in the table or the squad  based on these facts please explain what logic you use to support Kenny Dalglish other than nostalgia ?

YOU ARE PUTTING  LOYALTY TO KENNY DALGLISH   BEFORE LOYALTY TO LIVERPOOL FOOTBALL CLUB.

Plenty of positives to put Kenny with the other Anfield greats.

The way people talk at the current time it's as if we've won the Fa cup already. Honestly I was hoping he would be a success seeing he was the first English manager since Fagan! It went wrong! I feel more sorry for him in the wrong place at the wrong time and chosen by Purslow and Gillett and Hicks. Thought Gerrard missed the penalty against Blackburn on purpose!
I didn't want Dalglish has manager for the reasons you have put! He did well when he first took over and it was no fluke so deserved his contract but the transfer dealings and the treatment of certain players like Meireles,Maxi,Shelvey and Spearing with bringing so many players into a team that had done well for him did worry me! Players that were brought should have been made to work for their places.I can never understand why LFC has never had a Dutch manager seeing we treasure pass and move football I wouldn't have gone French or Spanish in 98/04 but for Louis Van Gaal and I suppose now Rijkaard and Van Basten would have been an interesting appointment for us if you want a younger coach.I will defend King Kenny's record from his first spell but I wouldn't call him KK now that has to be earnt again!

The Carling Cup is pretty much irrelevant - the equivalent doesn't even exist in other major nations.

Winning the FA Cup would be great, but it wouldn't mask the failings of this league campaign. Only success in the Champions League could've masked what an inadequate leage campaign this has been. And we weren't in the Champions League, so tough break for Dalglish there (although his excuses about the League Cup suggest that we'd be in the midst of a relegation fight if we had been in the CL, so maybe that was a lucky break after all!)

DanieRed said...

The owners are but business men who treasure success in the field as it shows that they are getting a return for their money, but KD had to have conditions when he decided not to guide the ship but run it aground.
1-He was set the same requirements as any manager who was likely to takeover, CL, one or two cups [tbh I do not think we will even win the FA]
2-He got the finances to facilitate the objectives laid out by the owners, and went on shopping spree for dross
3-His excuses about our loses have become even more bizzare as each game passes-by, kits, tiredness, injuries, the ex-players who were quick to nail Hodgie and Rafa, are suddenly quite timid, cannot criticise KD
4-His lack of game flow-awareness is bizzare for a player who was well above most for the Reds, team selection is another headache,
5-Sending some of our accomplished players to the bench or out on loan is amazingly stupid after buying squad & future players and completely rejecting our youth reserves
6-His brutal defence of his failure sends shivers down all true Reds, jornos and the owners, they will make a decision to let him go soon, with all our blessings.
As one of us pointed out we really need a replacement, we all experienced the murmuring after the game, with supporters walking off, after KD insulted some of us supporters for being brain-dead.
Enough is enough, he should go just like any other manager who has failed to attain basic managerial targets, we should be looking for another  manager, the process has already started if the owners mean business.
LETS STOP KIDDING OURSELVES - NO MAN IS BIGGER THAN LFC - EVEN KENNY.

I agree, there is no sense in making any changes now, the end of the season is the time to look at how things have gone. If all we have to show for this season is 8th or 9th plus the Carling Cup, changes need to be made. Benayoun - on loan at Arsenal, does a job from the bench. Chamakh - came on a free, if they sell him, they will turn a profit. Almunia - cost peanuts and now Arsenal have a quality keeper who also cost peanuts. Koscielny -has improved this season and with the rest of their centre backs being made of glass has probably been the one who stopped them getting more 8-2 results as the season has progressed. Squillaci - Rubbish, but it is not as if our signings have all been great. Diaby - another player who didn't cost a lot, although another one who is made of glass. Walcott - Has 9 goals this season and is currently playing better than most of our players. Not so bad, really! Do you think Fabregas left because Arsenal did not win the Carling Cup last season? I'd just be happy if we could develop a young player that Barcelona might be interested in. And losing a Carling Cup Final to Birmingham is not much worse than Cardiff missing a great chance to win it with 3 minutes left and then us needing penalties to beat them.

And if Arsenal are in perennial transition, they certainly cope with it better than us, because they are 16 points ahead of us and looking certs for the Champions League again, while we are floundering and looking like we may lose three on the spin again when we go to Newcastle. Wish we had Arsenal's problems.

John Henry will never trust Kenny anymore....and with good reason too.Who won't? Kenny for the first time in the history of Liverpool was given 130 mil a season to rebuild a squad and he blew it big time.I'm really afraid LFC will never get that kind of opportunity anymore. It is criminal.

John Henry's remit for the club this season after a major investment in players was minimum fourth spot. Not the league cup. Or FA cup. But fourth spot and a place in the CL. KD clearly failed, and just like Benitez failed with his "guarantee", should be shown the door.

Whether they are on loan, can be sold for profit, have improved or scored 9 goals is not the point. My point that you seem to have missed is they are not SOME OF THE BEST. Losing finalist and winning finalist, big difference. I do not have to think about why any Arsenal player has left that club as they have told the world. Ever heard the saying be careful what you wish for, as we are developing a few good talents right now. If after seven years all we have to show is qualifying for the champions league I doubt KK will be around to sing about it. I did say this is our first year of REAL transition and while we are not performing in the league we have won silver and it is our first full season under KK. Does the world end if we lose three in a row? If we come back next season stronger for the trials of this one we will be better for it. I'm a Liverpool fan, Arsenal can keep their problems.

Did I say we are better than Arsenal? That would be a miracle in footballing terms to be able to achieve in one full season. Chelsea have spent how much and changed manager how many times? Only to sit below Arsenal at present. I myself am trying to get across one simple point, I do not believe any manager should be untouchable but at the least they should be judged after two/three seasons if there are signs and evidence of success (style, direction, club harmony, silverware). I have seen evidence of all. I am using this forum to voice my opinion and see if there are like minded fans on here. I am not trying to force people to convert to my way of thinking. Although I would like to have someone give me another option (manager), say how they would turn it around and make us into what you class as a successful team in one season, with the resources available. Up for the challenge anyone?

Yes, improve the players that we bring in during the summer, can't trust the current management to do that. Train certain players, like Johnson, to be able to move into another position that we need pace in, like right midfield, doesn't seem too hard for other clubs, select the team so that the players who play compliment each other. E.g. Downing, the supposed super crosser plays more with our main aerial threat. Give players a run in the team when certain players clearly are not at their best, e.g. Reina, Enrique, Henderson. Look at players like Aurelio, if he isn't injured again, Sterling and Shelvey. Give Doni a chance, just to give Reina a bit of a jolt!

Seeing as we probably cannot afford to buy top bracket players, we should be searching for future top bracket players. Hoillet will be available for around a million in the summer, has to be worth a go, we should be doing everything to get him in. Can play off either flank, or off the front man, is fast, has a decent shot on him and can create chances. As i said on one of the other threads, Rhodes from Huddersfield will soon be a Scotland international, meaning he will be playing in bigger games against bigger teams. If he does well there, his price will skyrocket. He is good in the air, scores for fun and is young and will be in our price range. If we are creating chances, why not give him a go? Having another striker who is good in the air might also help our 35 million man, who played a similar system with Newcastle. It could be a plan b for us next year when Suarez next gets suspended. Promote Sterling this season and get him ready for next year. Take a look at Coady and see if he can provide back up for Lucas.

Other managers? Martin O'Neill, when is the last time a team of his ended the season below expectations? He took Sunderland from having form like ours to being right behind us. Sure, they lost the other night, but the improvement in the team has been too long to simply be players reacting to a new manager. He doesn't make excuses, no one is sure of their place and his players are always motivated. That would be a start for our team.

So, add Rhodes, Hoilett, Put Glen on the right, promote Sterling, Coady and Shelvey into the first team drop Reina and make O'Neill manager. Not too much I can say about that other than, it's an opinion.
